Notes from the Supervisor’s Office

T

his month marks the second anniversary of the introduction of the “Supervisor’s Notes column in Our Towne Guilderland. I hope that over the course of that time, readers have found the column to be useful and informative, as this was our intention in creating this feature. We are always open to suggestions for additions or improvements. Please feel free to direct your suggestions to me at Town Hall (356-1980, ext. 1040), or to Lowell Knapp, the Publisher of Our Towne.

One of the good things about the wet weather that we experienced this spring was that it has helped to keep our Town parks green and fresh-looking, and our Parks Department has been busy keeping them in good shape for the use of our residents. Our extensive system of parks ranges from neighborhood locations such as Abele, Fort Hunter, and Volunteer Firefighters’ Park, which are relatively small and feature amenities such as playgrounds and ball fields, to sports-oriented facilities such as Di Caprio, Keenholts, and Nott Road Parks, to our “crown jewel, Tawasentha Park, home to the Town Pool, the Guilderland Performing Arts Center, the Ruth Lawlor Memorial Gardens, a large playground, basketball, tennis, several picnic areas, and a 5-mile network of hiking trails. If you have questions about any of Guilderland’s park facilities, please visit the Parks Department page on the Town website, www. townofguilderland.org, or call the Parks Office at 456-3150. Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course is in excellent shape and continues to offer a pleasant and challenging golf experience at a reasonable price, particularly for Town residents who present resident identification cards, which can be obtained at the course with proof of residency. You can call the Western Turnpike Pro Shop at 456-0786 for information about course conditions and greens fees, or to arrange a tee time for your group. The Guilderland Performing Arts Center continues the longstanding tradition of offering free concerts from a range of musical genres at 7:30 each Thursday evening at the GPAC facility

in Tawasentha Park. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy some music in the serene setting of “The Hill by the Vale. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the financial support provided by many local businesses and individuals that allows us to continue with this series. Our summer recreation program is in full swing, providing day camp and sports/activity camps for hundreds of our Town’s children. There a few openings still left in a limited number of our programs. Please call the Parks Office at 456-3150 for more information. Summer recreational opportunities are also available in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, a significant portion of which lies within the Town of Guilderland. The Preserve contains 18 miles of trails for hikers and mountain bikers, as well as a variety of programs in and around the Discovery Center, the Preserve’s environmental education facility on New Karner Road. Information about the Preserve, and about hours and programs at the Discovery Center, can be found at www.albanypinebush.org. I hope that all of our residents are enjoying the warmer weather, and that you will travel safely around Guilderland as you enjoy the summer season. Kenneth Runion, Town Supervisor

SUMMER IS HERE! Summer is upon us. It is time for the kids to celebrate the end of their school year, and time for parents to be ready to spend more time with your family. The days are longer so evenings can be enjoyed outside at grill side. There is more time to play outside. Do not miss this season to be with your children outside, even if only in the evening doing something or just hanging out in the fresh air. At Guilderland Martial Arts we celebrate the end of school by going to Nationals to compete and then beginning our summer camp. One of the great things about Taekwondo summer camp for our students is that by the time the camp is over, there is still plenty of time to play outside. So the campers get the best of both activities. During the early part of the day the campers spend time developing community, great character, martial arts skills, and having fun with peers playing games, creating arts and crafts, creating martial arts skits, and learning weapon skills. Then in the late

Grades 1st - 6th : 9:00am - 4:00pm Taekwondo Class Daily ~ Team Building Skills Fun & Safe Environment ~ Plenty of Exercise Arts & Crafts ~ Games ~ Movies Camp Show every Friday

afternoon there is still time for all of the outdoor activities they want to enjoy with their family and friends. Now that the weather is nice it is also time to follow up on those New Year’s Resolutions; can you believe it has been 6 months already? If you have not gotten out to exercise make that plan happen, and if you can, do it with your children. When you are out with them, lead by example and be selfless to others. When you are doing those projects outside that you have been promising yourself you would get done once the weather turned nice, have the patience and perseverance to succeed in your work. It is not always easy, but you’ll feel great about it in the end. Happy Summer to All from Guilderland Martial Arts

Music & Stories that Celebrate African Heritage Among this summer’s many GPL Summer Reading Club events are several that are open to all! Such is the “Music and Stories from Our African Heritage” program on Tuesday, July 12, at 2 pm. No registration required! Just be there. Kim and Reggie Harris, nationally and internationally known musicians and storytellers, will perform music and stories from the African heritage of America and the World. This is an outstanding opportunity to broaden musical and folklore horizons, and meet this exciting and entertaining musical team.

Just how far can Buzz Lightyear go? This past spring we showed Toy Story. Then we showed Toy Story 2. On Friday, July 15, at 7 pm, we complete the Lightyear Trilogy with Toy … well, we are prevented by our performance license from using the featured movie’s title in any promotional literature, including this press release. But, you get the idea. The Toy franchise is going strong, with better graphics, the same delightfully twisted child-friendly humor, and a plotline built upon the gang being mistakenly delivered to a day care center. Best quote: Barbie introduces herself to Ken, and asks, “Have we ever met?” Ken: “I would have remembered.” This week’s feature is sponsored by Linda “MAZZ”ariello of RealtyUSA. We are grateful for the support. As always at the Library’s Helderberg Theatre, there is free popcorn, mats for the kiddies to lie down on, and a real feeling of community. So come on, enjoy the show. It starts promptly at 7 pm.

Summer Hours Are Here! The Library is closed on Sundays during the months of July and August. The Library’s summer hours are: Monday through Friday, 10 am to 9 pm; Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm. For more information on these programs, please call the Library at 456-2400, or email info@guilpl.org. The Guilderland Public Library is located at 2228 Western Avenue, Guilderland. Visit the Library’s website at www.guilpl.org. Become a Facebook Fan of Guilderland.Library, follow the Library on Twitter (@GuilderlandLib), and get music information and downloads on the Library’s Freegal page. It all starts at guilpl.org.

A. Research has shown that there are five million teeth knocked-out each year in the United States. Most of these teeth can be saved if they are treated correctly. Time is extremely crucial so immediate reimplantation insures the best possible prognosis. Handle the tooth by the crown and immediately place the tooth back in the socket without touching the root or cleaning the tooth. Do not worry about getting it in straight or having it turned backwards, just get it in the socket and immediately call your dentist. If you are uncomfortable or unable to reimplant the tooth, use one of the following solutions (in order of preference): Hank’s Solution (save-a-tooth), milk, saline, saliva, or lastly water (this is the least desirable). If you have any questions, please call my office at 518-356-5635 and ask for Dr. O! &RPPLWWHG WR FRQWLQXRXV WUDLQLQJ DQG XVLQJ VWDWH RI WKH DUW HTXLSPHQW DQG WHFKQLTXHV WR PDLQWDLQ WKH KLJKHVW TXDOLW\ RI GHQWDO FDUH

Guilderland Center Speed Limit to Be Reduced to 35 MPH Starting 7.18.11 The speed limit on New York State Route 146 in the Guilderland Center hamlet will be reduced from the current 40 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour beginning on Monday, July 18. The revised speed limit was the result of an agreement between the Town of Guilderland and the New York State Department of Transportation after several discussions on the subject that came about as the result of recommendations contained in the “Guilderland Center Hamlet Study”, a neighborhood plan prepared by the Town of Guilderland and the Capital District Transportation Committee. Community meetings conducted in the course of preparing the study indicated a strong level of support for the reduced speed limit based on the safety concerns of hamlet residents. Movable electronic signs and new road signs indicating the revised speed limit will be in place prior to the date of the change. Drivers in the hamlet area should be aware that local law enforcement agencies will be enforcing the new speed limit in Guilderland Center.

WRIST PAIN? IT MIGHT BE A NECK PROBLEM

By Dr. Jennifer L. Noonan, Spinal Wellness Center, Western Ave, Guilderland ain in your wrist must mean there’s a problem in your wrist right? Not necessarily. Chiropractors take a larger view and often have more effective results with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) by looking not only at the wrist, but the spine as well. In a review of medially confirmed CTS, it was discovered that the majority of patients examined also had concurrent problems in the cervical spine. Chiropractors have been effectively treating CTS for decades, preventing the risky use of drugs and often preventing unnecessary injections and surgery. We take a fundamentally different approach than traditional care. A chiropractor knows that if your hands have pain and tingling, the first place to look is your neck. That is where the nerve roots which traverse the arm and into the hand originate. Cervical adjustments, which are proven safer than commonly used over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, remove the compression at the nerve root and make a full recovery from CTS more likely. The other critical component of effective treatment is the adjustment to the carpal bones, which become fixated, contributing to irritation within the tunnel. I can tell you from years of personal experience with this common disorder, it is extremely effective. I have even treated cases where the patient has had surgery, which failed, but they went on to recover with the get-to-the-cause approach that I take. Several years ago I also began using cold laser therapy as part of my treatment protocol for CTS. It works on the principal of biostimulation, which facilitates cell repair and regeneration. It works particularly well on nerve-related pain such as CTS. I wish all patients with CTS would try chiropractic first, drugs second, and surgery as an absolute last resort. To get more information or to schedule a complimentary, no obligation consultation, call 869-3415 today.

Go back to basics – order water.

3

Just say no to shakes and other high-calorie extras.

4

My kids count on me to make good choices. And now they count on me to order less at fast food restaurants. Meals under 600 calories keep me energized and feeling great, so I can be there for them. Look at calorie postings before you choose.

Go “small” or skip the sugary drinks like soda, sweetened teas, and juice drinks.

5

Don’t double up – order a single burger.

6

Limit, or even better, pass on the mayo, cheeses and sauces.

7

Bye-bye bacon and sausage – they’re just extra calories and fat.

8

Go for grilled, not fried.

9

Share half with a friend or family member.

10

Stay “small” when ordering fries.

1320

18

Cut the combo meal – that extra 50 cents or dollar for the combo meal can mean hundreds of extra calories that you don’t need.

Q A 

with Laura Spratt

Awake Up With Makeup 3434 Carman Rd, Guilderland

Q. What year did your business start? I started self employment in 1990 part- me, easing out of 12 years in the dental field.

Q. Where are you located and were you always in the same locaƟon? I am now located @ Heritage Massage, 3434 Carman Road in Guilderland on the Fuller Sta on Road side of the Plaza, across from Pinebush Elementary School. Our door is right next to Maria’s Altera ons. I am sooo excited to be in this space with Kim & Donna, they are the best in their fields and to finally grow my business roots near where I live is super awesome. (I was in Latham for 20 years!)

Q. How and why did you get into business? My career began as a dental assistant. It was then that I realized I wanted to help people look their best. I knew I wanted to remain in the field that was medically based, so I returned to school. I encountered a friend of mine who was an electrologist and suggested I would be great in that field so... Needing change, off I went to school. Over some years, I encountered a few situa ons, one friend needed areolas ta ooed a er her reconstruc ve surgery and another friend had much scarring discolora on which she needed camouflage work done to blend the scars.(We didn’t know of anyone that did that) The more I researched I started to consider the field of micropigmenta on! Each field has been quite a journey. I never realized how I have affected so many lives by being able to create something that can complete a person’s self esteem. I love it all! My passion is in my work, the people inspire me beyond.. And thankfully, I have found my place.

Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specific that they are always coming in for? Some of the same customers have been coming to me since i started, for some services, although, there are always new people especially since i have just moved to Guilderland. The best is yet to come!

Q. What hours are you open? I am available 7 days a week by appointment.

Q. Are you known for anything Special? Yes! Awakeup with Makeup; cosme c & medical ta ooing. Also I have been told I am the waxing guru! Lol! Oh yea, and my gentle touch.

20

Q. Do you sponsor any teams? Q I have never sponsored any teams, however I am working on grants to h eestablish funding to provide medical tta ooing to men and women tthat cannot afford to pay for their p procedures or insurance won’t cover it it. The finish process is the light at the end of a difficult situa on and it should be covered.

Q. What do you love most about your business? What I love most about providing these services in my business is, when finished ,my clients always look and feel fantas c. If its as simple as a manicure w/polish or I just created a set of simulated permanent eyebrows that they might have lost (from alopecia or chemo) I have always somehow helped them create more inner peace.

Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge in business? My biggest challenge at this me is spreading the word about my business so that I can educate people who might need my services. I am passionate about helping others and use our website and word-of-mouth to get the word around. I am also exploring facebook as a way to share our services.

Q. What do you want the community to know about you? I am very excited to have re-located and finally se le my business roots in Guilderland where I live. I want to make a real difference at this me of my life thru my passion in the permanent cosme c field.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GUILDERLAND REAL ESTATE

J

ust about every day I get asked the question how is the market? My answer is pretty much the same “It depends on whether you are buying or selling, but in either case the market is generally not as bad as the media portrays it”. Well priced, quality homes that are marketed correctly continue to sell. For example the last two homes we have listed in Guilderland have each sold in under a week for 98% of asking price. One sold in one day for cash for the highest price ever obtained in the development. However, the perception is homes languish for months in this market. Here are some important facts to know when selling a home.

1) Demand is still strong. While prices are down from the peak, demand for quality homes in good school districts such as Guilderland remains fairly strong. We are again seeing multiple offers on homes. However, the marketing system utilized is critical. For a free report on the marketing system we use sell our listings for top dollar call us 24 hours a day at 1-800-448-7016 Ext 500. 2) Home values are likely not going to move up in the near term. Home values are driven by a variety of factors that include job growth, income growth, property tax burdens, population trends, and the lending environment. Upstate NY remains strained in all of these areas. While mortgage rates are favorable, obtaining a mortgage has become more difficult. If you want to wait until “the market improves” or prices return to 2007 levels be prepared for the long haul. For insight into your home’s current value visit us at www.guilderlandmarkettrends.com 3) Look at the big picture. Many of our clients are selling to retire to other states such as Florida. However, many sellers are still focusing on what their Guilderland homes where worth just a few years ago and how much equity they have “lost”. Here is the reality. Your Guilderland home may have dropped in value in the last four years. However, if you move to another market such as Florida, values have fallen at a much higher rate. In many cases, I have clients buying Florida homes at prices 50-60% off their highs. Even though your home may have lost value here, you are coming out ahead by moving to a market that has been harder hit. If you have questions about the local market please do not hesitate to call us anytime at 518-861-7016.

July Reading from Your Library: Guilderland's Gathering Place by Barbara Nichols Randall, Director, Guilderland Public Library I know it is really summer when Summer Reading Club takes over the Library. This year’s them is “One World, Many Stories”. Our children’s and teen’s programs will reflect this theme all summer long. Our Adult Department will also be once again encouraging our summer adult reader’s to join in the fun. We have many books, videos and music that can take you anywhere in the world from the comfort of your own backyard. Some of our most recent additions include: Non –fiction works include classic culture studies such as The Polish way : a thousand-year history of the Poles and their culture by Adam Zamoyski. Or A slightly different way of experiencing Irish culture Finding Ireland : a poet's explorations of Irish literature and culture by Richard Tillinghast..

Deborah Fallows’ Dreaming in Chinese : Mandarin lessons in life, love, and language is another way of experiencing another culture.

Upholstery A CUSTOMER SERVICE BUSINESS

In addition to our quality upholstery and window treatments, we also make custom cushions for patio furniture in fabrics of your choosing, including Sunbrella. Call 765-2169 now to get in our spring & summer calendar. 26

The dead yard : a story of modern Jamaica by Ian Thomson is another fascinating look at a culture we may think we know.

We can also explore the world through fiction, especially through the fiction translated from a countries best writers. Daniyal Mueenuddin’s novel, In other rooms, other wonders , is a collection of linked stories illuminating both a place and a people through an examination of the entwined lives of landowners and their retainers on the Gurmani family farm in the countryside outside of Lahore, Pakistan.

Prominenet Korean author Kyong-suk Sin makes her English language debut with Please look after Mom: a novel, a story that readers will find compelling and page turning. This novel will appear on many lists in the coming year

The Library also has a fine collection of videos which show us as well as tell us about other cultures. One of my favorites is the Anthony Bourdain series of videos from his travel channel television show, No Reservations . Boudain is a genial though occasionally profane traveler, who visits the world through its ordinary and extraordinary foods.
