Notes from the Supervisor’s Office

W

ell, it has been a year now since Our Towne Guilderland publisher Lowell Knapp asked me to start providing some monthly notes on happenings here in the Town of Guilderland. I hope that in the course of the past year, there have been a few things in this monthly column that you have found interesting or useful. Our main reason in introducing and continuing this feature in Our Towne was to provide residents with a little bit of information about current events in the Town. If you have comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact either Lowell Knapp at Our Towne, or to contact me at Town Hall (356-1980, ext. 1040) or by e-mail at runionk@townofguilderland.org. With the difficult economic climate we have all experienced on a national, state, and regional level, it is important that we work to provide Guilderland’s residents with inexpensive summer recreation opportunities close to home. Our Parks and Recreation Department works hard to keep our Town’s parks in good shape for the use of our residents. Our facilities range from smaller, neighborhood-scale parks like Fort Hunter, Abele, and Volunteer Firefighters’ Park, with ball fields and playgrounds, up to Tawasentha Park, Guilderland’s largest facility, which offers swimming, ball fields, extensive hiking trails, tennis, basketball, a playground, picnic areas, the Guilderland Performing Arts Center, and the awardwinning Ruth Lawlor Garden. If you have questions about the hours or facilities at any of our Town parks, please visit the Guilderland website, www.townofguilderland.org, or call the

Parks and Recreation Department at 456-3150. Guilderland offers a full range of summer sports and activity camps for our youth. If you are still looking for organized activities for your children, a number of these camps still have openings, so please visit the Town website or call the Parks and Recreation office to check out what still may be available. Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course is in great shape, offering a challenging and interesting recreational experience for local golfers at all skill levels. We are pleased to be able to offer this experience at a reasonable rate, with a significant discount offered to Guilderland residents presenting their resident identification cards, which can be obtained at the Western Turnpike Pro Shop. For more information about course conditions, tee times, or green fees, please call the Pro Shop at 456-0786. Please remember that free concerts are available every Thursday evening through late August at the Guilderland Performing Arts Center facility at Tawasentha Park. Performances begin at 7:30, and feature a broad range of musical genres. Our most popular shows feature our very own Guilderland Town Band. We appreciate the support of this program that has been provided over the course of the last 31 seasons by a variety of local businesses and individuals.

The Town of Guilderland is a member community in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, an area of unique ecological significance. The Preserve offers the opportunity for hiking and mountain-bike riding on an extensive trail network, much of which is in the Town of Guilderland. Recreational opportunities in the Pine Bush Preserve are managed by the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission, which also operates The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Discovery Center, an environmental education facility that offers children (and adults) hands-on opportunities to learn about the environmental features of the Preserve, and about the plant and animal species that inhabit it. You can obtain information about the Discovery Center and about other recreational opportunities in the Preserve at www.albanypinebush.org, or by calling 456-0655. I would like to wish all Guilderland’s residents a safe and enjoyable summer.

Perhaps the greatest part of being a Guilderland resident is the invaluable feeling of community and unity. Interested in helping out a local cause for budding Guilderland athletes? On Tuesday July 20 at 4pm, Guilderland High will host a Family and Fun Night barbecue that will benefit Guilderland Athletics. There will be various games and contests, including dunk tanks, a soccer shoot out, tug of war, face painting, and a 5k road race/2 mile fun walk. Proceeds will benefit reinstating freshman sports. A few more exciting events worth noting—on July 8, there will be a Twelve-Chamber Cruise mixer on the Captain JP. For only $36, you can mingle, boat, and network with various business owners. Come August, the GCC will be hosting a Tri-Chamber mixer at Pinehaven Country Club. Putting contests, raffles, and more. The event is only $10 and proceeds to go to the American Cancer Society.

Many younger children have poor bladder control at night. After the age of 4 or 5, however, the inability to stay dry at night may be a sign of an underlying problem. July Reading from Your Library: Guilderland’s Gathering Place By Barbara Nichols Randall, Director Guilderland Public Library

It may be trite, but I always start to feel extra patriotic in July. So with thoughts of our shared history and having just spent a week in our nation’s capital, here is some suggested reading for July. Say David McCullogh’s name and immediately his blockbusters 1776 and John Adams come to mind. The Library also has some of his lesser celebrated books in addition to the PBS series The American Experience he hosted. Our country also depended on our Founding Mothers and the Ladies of Liberty who are profiled by ABC News political commentator and NPR news analyst, Cokie Roberts. Remember most of our books are also available as audiobooks. If you like thrillers and an outsider hero, Greg Rucka’s books featuring exͲMarine and bodyguard Atticus Kodiak may be the new series you are looking to read. Patriot Acts (3rd in the series) tells his story that begins with Finder and continues with his newest title Walking Dead. Read the book or listen on audiobook while you enjoy your July 4th fireworks! Your teens might recognize Rucka’s name—yes, he also has done work for DC, Dark Horse and Marvel comics! Feeling lazy at that family picnic? Just want to swing in the hammock? How about enjoying a little patriotic poetry? Henry Wadsworth Longfellow gained fame far and wide for Paul Revere’s instruction of “One if by land, and two if by sea” as well as many other poems reliving our country’s early history. Another great poem is written about my great aunt (14 generations removed), Pricilla Mullins, who tells John Alden to “speak for yourself”. Get the kids to read the poems aloud and I’m sure some of the grandparents will recite along with them “Under the spreading chestͲnut tree…”. For family enjoyment and a preview of Washington, DC buildings you might like the Capital mysteries series by Ron Roy. KC and her friend Marshall solve lots of fun mysteries like Mystery at the Washington Monument and Fireworks at the FBI.

The answer to June’s ques on is: The Foundtainhead by Ayn Rand. Rochelle S. was the winner. This month’s ques on will be a snap for boomers—

Keep Some Consistency in Your Child’s Schedule by Bob Esposito Capital Northeast Mar al Arts

We’re coming upon the summer months and the end of school. This o en can mean a change in rou ne and the adop on of other ac vi es and programs in your child’s daily schedule. While summer is a wonderful me of year to relax and try new things, it’s important for your child to maintain a balance of structured and unstructured me. It’s advisable to keep some consistency in your child’s ac vity schedule so that the transi on back at the end of the summer is not jarring or diďŹƒcult. I have been asked about whether a child should or shouldn’t “take a breakâ€? from their lessons or classes during the summer. Obviously, there’s no one answer since no child is the same. However, in my experience, maintaining at least 1-2 classes per week during the summer helps a child to feel a sense of accomplishment and stability. At the same me, they’re able to strengthen their character and keep their commitment to learning alive. This helps them to be classroom-ready when school resumes. Children get very uneasy if they feel that they’re missing something or that someone is advancing ahead when they are “on a break.â€? This can nega vely impact children’s confidence levels and make them feel reluctant to rejoin once the break is over.

COMMUNITY MOVIE NIGHTS FRIDAY NIGHT Of course, if a week long vaca on is planned, a prepared parent can side step any nega ve ramifica ons by having their children take an extra class before leaving or an extra class when they return. Front loading classes (without overwhelming) can ease the feeling that they are “falling behind or someone else is “ge ng ahead. In addi on, ge ng a tutor, such as a more advanced student or a willing instructor, can help a child to stay on the path to success when a vaca on is planned.

Held at the GPAC amphitheatre in Tawasentha Park in cooperation with the Guilderland Parks and Recreation department and Stewart’s Shops.

Some mes children become intrigued by what their other friends are doing, playing, or saying while your children are par cipa ng in their class. This can be diďŹƒcult for children because again, they don’t want to miss anything. It’s important to prepare your children for these feelings by talking openly about priori es, eort, commitment, and me. Helping your children make good well-thought-out choices that strengthen character will be much be er in the long run than if they make poor decisions based on shortlived tempta ons and whims. Remind your children that they only have the opportunity to enjoy their class a few mes per week for just a few hours (or less). They have the opportunity to spend me with friends during the many other hours available in the week. Bob Esposito is the owner of Capital Northeast MarĆ&#x;al Arts. His school is located at 1811 Western Ave. in Guilderland. He currently holds the rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and 3rd Degree Black Belt in Hapkido.
