Oxford Maths: Mentals and Mastery provides engaging curriculum-aligned content to support students in Years 1 to 6.
Mentals and Mastery is made up of 30 to 35 topics at each year level, sorted into three strands: Number and algebra, Measurement and space, Statistics and probability. The content within each strand meets the focus areas/outcomes of the Australian curriculum (v9), NESA Syllabus for mathematics and Western Australian curriculum for 2026 onwards, dependent on which state edition you’re using.

Student Books
The Student Book features clear and simple layouts, with each topic divided into two sections: mental computation and worded problems. This structure is designed to maximise students’ number fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

Mentals and Mastery helps students make connections with mathematics in the real-world, enhances critical thinking skills, deepens mathematical fluency and consolidates understanding of key mathematical concepts.
MentalsandMasteryintheclassroom
Mentals and Mastery can be used in conjunction with Oxford series Oxford Maths and Maths Plus, or as a standalone independent practice program. A whole-school 1–6 program such as Mentals and Mastery ensures a coherent progression of skills and expectations, reducing gaps and overlaps.
The program offers opportunities for independent practice and homework activities to strengthen student autonomy.
Consolidate fluency
Mental computation activities aid retrieval practice and long-term memory retention; embedding the learning and making recall easier moving forward.
Deepen understanding
Mastery sections (worded problems) offer a real-world mathematical focus and develop problem-solving skills and understanding. These application questions encourage critical thinking.
Usingtheresources
Educators may project student book pages on screen to explicitly talk through a problem, and can use the curriculum planners and term planners to prepare the year’s work.
They can then choose and prepare activities to effectively support student learning at their point of need, with student-friendly glossaries available to support comprehension.

Mental computation practice builds success through consistent practice and improve number sense and proficiency.
StudentBooks
Worded problems support NAPLAN assessment, consolidate mathematical vocabulary and literacy, and help students make real-world connections. They provide meaningful opportunities for multiple perspectives and representations therefore promoting higher order thinking.
