TANYA ROSIE grew up in Milton Keynes in a household filled with Iranian traditions (from her Mum), and a few Scottish ones too (from Her Dad). She currently works as a commissioning editor at Walker Books in London, and loves to write poems and picture books of her own. In all her writing, she likes to capture something of the way it was being a child. She now lives in St Albans, UK.

CLAUDIA RAVALLI was born in New York City. She now lives in Switzerland with her husband and two children. Early on in childhood, she was already exploring her creativity by drawing, and painting whenever she had the chance. Her passion for children’s books is primarily inspired by the magical world she imagined as a child.

Ren and Riko brought a popsicle-stick bed. Hazel brought cotton wool cushions. This is a solar flare a burst of energy from the Sun’s surface! ‘I like the Sun better when it’s FAR AWAY , ’ I say. ‘Let’s go somewhere else.’ ‘Dancing Dinosaurs!’ I say. ‘The Sun sounds scary! I do NOT want to go there!’ Dr Dino says that she doesn’t either, but that the Sun is still very important. On Earth, plants and animals need energy from the Sun to live. When your side of the world is facing away from the Sun, then it’s night-time there. Dr Dino says this wouldn’t be a good idea. The sun is a giant ball of scorching gas and it is MUCH TOO HOT to jump on. Seatbelts on! ‘THREE, TWO, ONE . . . LIFT OFF!’ To get to space we need to fly in a rocket Luckily, Dr Dino knows all about them. Rockets are made of strong metal. Astronauts like us sit in a cabin where all the controls are. Rockets travel at around 40,000 km an hour to escape Earth’s gravity. That’s 32 times faster than the fastest car!

All I wanted to do was find a quiet place to start on my school project. My teacher, Mrs Shell-Clacker, wanted us all to write about something new we had learned over the summer holidays to share with the rest of the class. It was almost time for school to start again and I hadn’t got around to writing anything!

Mola and I grinned at each other. The day had turned out to be so much fun after all. Just being ourselves seemed to have turned everything magic!

‘I really hope you’ll visit again,’ I said. Mola nodded. ‘And you should come and visit us in the Kingdom of Aquilla too!’

‘I’d love to,’ I replied. ‘Let’s make sure we always stay in touch!’

‘Always!’ agreed Mola.

Try building a new word by starting with a word you know, or a word you have found in the thesaurus, and adding one of these suffixes (endings) to it: You can also build compound words by joining two whole words together. Here are a few suggestions for words to use, but you can also try out your own: -feeling rough-feeling skin -looking scary-looking teeth -smelling a musty-smelling room -sounding an eerie-sounding wail For example, if you are describing a dragon, you could give it: lidless eyes, bat-like wings, sour-smelling breath and fire-emitting nostrils. a lemony pudding -y a herby flavour a magic-proof castle -proof a sword-proof shield a ghost-like shadow a swan-like neck -like -free a chocolatefree chin -less a flowerless garden a hairyish creature -ish a purplish bruise a shortish route 488

Another sound effect that you can create yourself is alliteration which means using two or more words which start with the same sound. This is especially useful in poetry, but can also be effective in story writing. They went to sea in a Sieve, they did, In a
