Make equal groups – grouping

This book aligns with White Rose Maths Year 2 Multiplication and division Step 7. Make equal groups – grouping

CLASSROOM LEARNING

Children are learning to connect their understanding of equal groups to division. They focus on grouping objects into specif ic amounts rather than sharing them equally. They also encounter the division symbol for the f irst time. In this book, children will see various examples of grouping in the games and rides at the fair.

SUPPORTING CHILDREN

Children may need extra support to understand that grouping is dif ferent from sharing. Grouping involves placing objects into specif ic-sized groups, while sharing means dividing objects into equal groups. You can help children by using everyday items to demonstrate these concepts.

Nini and the children were at the fair. Mrs McKinley and Poly had come along with them.

The children couldn’t wait to get on the rides.

‘Ember is coming to meet us,’ Nadia whispered to Omar. ‘She’s going to love the fair!’

‘I’ll keep a look out for her,’ said Omar.

When they entered the fair, Omar turned to Nadia. ‘Look over there,’ he said. ‘It’s Ember!’ Ember was spinning around on one of the rides.

Dragon?

‘Dragon!’ squawked Poly.

Mrs McKinley stroked Poly’s head. ‘Yes, Poly, we’ll go on the dragon ride later,’ she said.

When the ride came back round, Ember was gone.
