USING THE TESTS

The Numeration, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division and Fraction subtests are designed to be given independently, according to need. However, since an understanding of numeration is critical to computation, it is advisable that the numeration test be given with any assessment program to determine the underlying understanding of the numbers that students will be working with. Each test requires around 20 minutes to give to the whole class, but this amount of time may be reduced if only a portion of the questions are used. This approach is useful if the class has not met all of the aspects covered in the test. There may also be individuals who require more time to provide an opportunity to display all of their knowledge, without feeling pressure to complete the test as quickly as possible.

Each test comes in two forms to provide a means of assessing student knowledge about a topic, and also progress made after a teaching program has been implemented to overcome any difficulties, misconceptions or gaps identified in the initial testing. The questions on each form parallel one another, so that either Test A or Test B can be given to determine initial understandings. A number of tests could be given in the same sitting with short breaks between each test.

Each student requires a copy of the chosen test and a pencil or pen. For question 1 of the tests for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, ten basic facts need to be read out loud to those being given the test. Three seconds should elapse between each question, and only the answer should be written in the spaces provided on the test paper. All other questions are written on the test and can be completed mentally or by recording on the space allowed with each question. All answers need to be written on the test paper in the place indicated.

The tests may be given to a whole class, a small group, or individuals within the class. In all cases, take measures to minimise interruptions during the testing period.

■ For the whole class, a test is best administered in the students’ normal classroom, preferably early in the school day. Arrange seating to minimise the possibility of any student seeing or copying another student’s work.

■ For a small group or an individual, arrange a suitable testing place away from the class activity conducted with the remaining students.

■ Have a supply of pencils on hand.

■ When a question has several parts, full understanding is indicated only when all parts are answered correctly. If only one item is correct, it may indicate that the child has guessed. When some but not all parts are answered correctly, take note of what does appear to be known when planning for intervention.

■ Ask students to put a line through working they have changed or do not want to use rather than erase it, as there may be information in that working that will assist with planning for intervention on that aspect.

■ Remind students to check their work before finishing a question.

■ Remember that for the Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division tests, the first ten questions are to be read aloud and answers are to be written on the test paper.

■ Each test will take about 20 minutes.

■ Prepare an activity for those who finish the test early so that they do not disrupt those who need more time.
