Continuing a Legacy Many years ago, I made the decision to immigrate to the United States with nothing but $250, one suitcase and a deep admiration for the work and education taking place at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, where I was coming to complete a graduate prosthodontics program. The time that has passed and experiences I have had since then have only reinforced that coming to Oklahoma was the right choice.

Having served in many roles at the college through the years, I am truly honored to have been selected as the new dean of the OU College of Dentistry. I am grateful for the chance to continue the legacy of excellence established by previous leadership and look forward to a future of ongoing innovation and progress.

Through the many challenges we have faced since COVID-19 arrived in Oklahoma in March 2020, our students continue to demonstrate a passion for dentistry and great dedication to their education. We want to continue to recruit excellent students to our programs and this is only achieved by staying focused on the future of dentistry.

Dean’s Message

We will continue to improve our student experience in multiple areas of focus, including expanding access to care, utilizing advanced digital technology in our treatment processes, improving the patient experience and increasing research efforts at the college.

We intend to become a premier resource for practicing dentists and dental hygienists. This process includes development initiatives within the college as well as providing comprehensive continuing education opportunities that enhance the practice of dentistry statewide.

Cultivating and maintaining these resources allows us to build a strong network of providers – both current and future – not only dedicated to excellence within their practices but also aware of new horizons made possible through diversity and learning from one another.

One thing I admire about this college is that we focus not only on providing excellent education and resources but also on how to best care for the oral health needs of our community.

A dream of mine finally came true in the spring of 2021 when we were able to host our very first dental clinic exclusively for veterans. As a reservist in the U.S. Army for nine years, I developed a deep respect for the veterans’ community and became keenly aware of gaps in care veterans face when they complete their service. This one-day clinic, made possible by support from our own faculty, staff and students, as well as community partners, allowed us to provide muchneeded dental care, at no cost, to 60 Oklahoma veterans, with a total value in excess of $100,000.

This is just one example of meeting the needs of our community, but I know many within the college also serve in other local clinics and events designed to meet the needs of the underserved.

All these things allow us to continue the legacy of the OU College of Dentistry as a leader in dental care and education. I am honored to serve as dean of this college and look forward to the great things we will accomplish together.

At The College

It’s 2022! Recently, it seems like every year has produced new challenges, but the OU College of Dentistry continues to thrive! For those of you who don’t know me, I am Nathan Brown. I was in the graduating class of 2007. Although my career as a dentist began then, I have always been around the field. My dad, Dr. S. Kelly Brown, was in the very first class in 1976, and, in turn, dentistry became my passion as well. Since graduation, I have served in multiple roles with the Oklahoma Dental Association, the J. Dean Robertson Society Board of Trustees, and currently serve as president of the college’s Alumni Association.

This past year was extremely eventful at the school. As most of you already know, Dr. Raymond Cohlmia stepped down as dean and took the role of executive director for the American Dental Association. Though his presence will be dearly missed, we are confident that he will improve the field of dentistry for the better.

Dr. Paul Mullasseril was named the college’s fifth dean, and we are thrilled to work with him as he leads us into the future. I know it took a lot of hard work, dedication, late nights and weekends to keep the school running smoothly and efficiently during this transition. I commend everyone involved!

That dedication is an excellent reminder of why I enjoy being involved in the alumni association. Not only are our faculty dedicated, but so are our students. I recently had the opportunity to speak with several students currently in the program. They all expressed extreme gratitude for continuing their education this year, and many were very grateful to have received financial support. Those conversations made me realize just how much the donations to the J. Dean Robertson Society impact our school and future colleagues.

Letter from the Alumni President

As you know, your gifts each year to the J. Dean Robertson Society support student scholarships. In addition, gifts to the JDR Society fund indigent care, student externships, research projects, tutoring, and help with continued renovations that allow for an excellent clinical learning environment. The student externships provide our students with additional opportunities to receive hands-on clinical care in underserved communities. These also help uninsured or underinsured patients receive affordable dental care and provide patients access to dental care in rural areas.

Recently, the school dedicated practices within the Miranda Clinic in honor of the Harroz Family (Drs. Edward Harroz, Jr. and Edward Harroz, III) and the Brown and Hookom Families (Drs. S. Kelly Brown, Nathan Brown, and Mathew Hookom) in recognition of recent philanthropic contributions. Recognizing the exceptional opportunities that the J. Dean Robertson Society provides, our families felt compelled to make additional investments in the growth and improvement of our students and the future of dentistry. We are sincerely grateful for everything that the college has provided to us throughout the years and are humbled that we could give back and invest in strengthening our program and students so they can continue to serve our communities for many years to come.

This year marks the college’s 50th anniversary of admitting its inaugural dental class, and we have some phenomenal news! The College of Dentistry is opening a second location in Tulsa! The new dental clinic will be located in the OU Health Schusterman Center, and Dr. Rieger Wood was appointed director of clinical operations. This clinic will help fulfill one of the school’s primary responsibilities of improving the oral health of Oklahomans.

We are excited to expand access to affordable dental care to the northeast corner of Oklahoma. Now that’s something to look forward to!

Additionally, in celebration of the college’s 50th anniversary, plans are underway for a big celebration this fall (COVID permitting). Be on the lookout for more details coming soon. I cannot wait to see old friends, classmates, and faculty. Until then, I hope you will reflect on this year and remember all things you are blessed with, one of which is the ability to serve others through your education as an OU College of Dentistry graduate. Please join me in continuing to show financial support to the college so that we continue to produce some of America’s most outstanding dentists. I wish you all health and happiness in this new year.

Meet the New Dean Paul Mullasseril, D.D.S., M.S., became dean of the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in September 2021, but his relationship with the college spans two decades. With the departure of the previous dean, Raymond Cohlmia, D.D.S., Dr. Mullasseril was very interested in applying for the position. Still, the process began with much soul-searching and self-reflection, and his personal interrogatory explored a full range of personal and professional aspirations, motivations and capabilities.

Originally from Mumbai, India, Dr. Mullasseril arrived in the United States in 1992, armed with little more than the dental degree earned at the University of Bombay. His target destination and immediate goals were the OU College of Dentistry 4

and post-doctoral training in maxillofacial prosthetics, which he completed in 1994.

His interest in the OU College of Dentistry largely focused on the presence of noted scholars, teachers with national and international reputations, some of whom became his mentors.

He cites individuals including Dean Johnson, D.D.S., chief of the graduate prosthodontic program; Herbert Shillingburg, D.D.S., worldrenowned for his textbook publications; Frank Wiebelt, D.D.S.; and Ram Nanda, D.D.S. “I cannot claim to be self-made,” said Dr. Mullasseril. “The guidance I received from experienced educators with proven expertise is invaluable.”

After completing his post-doctoral training at OU, Dr. Mullasseril continued to broaden his skills and experience through fellowship training at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Dr. Mullasseril joined the College of Dentistry faculty in the Department of Removable Prosthetics in 1998. He directed the department until 2008, when he accepted a position at Eastern Washington University, Spokane. While there, he successfully established a new master’s program in dental hygiene.

In 2011, he returned to Oklahoma, a place that felt more like home, where his leadership roles and responsibilities with the College of Dentistry began to multiply.

• He was named chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry in 2012.

• In 2012, he was also appointed director of the faculty practice dental clinic.

• In 2015, he was named assistant dean for clinical and preclinical education under Dr. Cohlmia’s leadership.

• He currently holds the Connie and Herbert T. Shillingburg, D.D.S., Professorship of Fixed Prosthodontics.

Dr. Mullasseril has extensive leadership experience in numerous professional organizations, and his list of awards and accolades is impressive. He is valued as a consultant and key opinion leader in fields associated with the dental profession and is a noted expert in the areas of removable prosthetics and implant dentistry. This depth of expertise keeps him in demand as a national and international presenter of continuing education topics.

Dr. Mullasseril was chosen to speak at an Army swearing-in ceremony, sharing his compelling story as an immigrant and Army reservist. His military service further fueled his passion for underserved patient populations, specifically U.S. veterans. The recent launch of the college’s Veterans Day clinics, two to date, were driven

by Dr. Mullasseril’s commitment to see veterans’ benefits expanded and enhanced.

Dr. Mullasseril became a permanent resident as he worked in the United States, and joined the U.S. Army following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The path to full citizenship was a five-year journey he pursued with determination. Dr. Mullasseril has outlined ambitious goals for the college under his term as dean. His comprehensive plan, Vision 2026, identifies nine specific targets for improved dental health in Oklahoma. Under this plan, the college will: • Become the leader in dental health care in the state • Lead the nation in the use of advanced technology • Make customer service top priority • Become the regional leader in dental continuing education • Recruit the most capable students across the country • Create a model for effective faculty development and retention • Leverage philanthropic opportunities for renovation and expansion • Promote diversity, equity and inclusion • Accelerate clinical research

Dr. Mullasseril is not only a leader for the college, but also a family man. His wife, Dr. Anaita Mullasseril, D.D.S., is an orthodontist and sole practitioner in a successful practice she established 10 years ago in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Their daughter is a medical student at the OU College of Medicine, and their son is pursuing a degree in computer science at Rice University in Houston.

With a passion for travel, one of the family’s beloved traditions is to visit one national park each year. A bit closer to home, you’ll often find Dr. Mullasseril on a tennis court in his free time.

The OU College of Dentistry has earned a reputation for excellence in dental education that fully prepares exceptional graduates for successful clinical practice.

Dr. Mullasseril is deeply concerned that a significant percentage of Oklahoma residents, both children and adults, have high incidents of dental decay, tooth loss and gum disease, which is strongly linked to the absence of regular preventive oral health care. A range of initiatives, including the expansion of clinical sites and externships, aim to boost annual patient visits to the college up to 60,000. As the college expands its clinical presence to the Schusterman Center in Tulsa, more patients will have access to affordable dental care and educational programs that promote good oral health.

Dr. Mullasseril has played a key role in developing strategic partnerships to increase access to dental care. The presence of infectious diseases and the risk of potential infection are universal concerns that make it critically important for certain patients to seek dental treatment. Mitigation efforts include

coordination of care with the college for HIVpositive patients through the infectious disease program at OU Health. Poor oral health also may compromise heart patients who need heart valve procedures, effectively limiting care options for patients who can’t afford dental care. The college has worked to arrange for funding through the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation to help these patients. Similarly, oral health deficits must be addressed in patients with head and neck cancers before treatment can begin. The college has partnered with the Head and Neck Cancer Foundation to provide care for 50,000 cancer patients.

Technology is inextricably woven into every international culture. In dentistry, the use of technology crossed the boundaries of radiology and imaging long ago. “Digital technology is an essential element of care,” said Dr. Mullasseril.

“In the clinical practice, we should see 60 to 80% of patients receiving care that incorporates digital technologies and processes in the next five years. The education we provide must prepare our students for that level of real-word, modern practice.” Dr. Mullasseril also notes that technology that integrates mobile apps and electronic health records will play an important role to draw the next generation of dental professionals to the college.

Already, there’s forward motion to support increased clinical research within the college.

The faculty practice will be relocated to an environment more conducive to state-of-the-art dental practice. In addition, four chairs for clinical research have been established as a means to encourage faculty members toward increased research activity. “As a clinically oriented school providing exceptional care, it makes sense to translate those strengths into intensified clinical research.”

The college will celebrate a milestone this year – its 50th anniversary. Dr. Mullasseril acknowledged the impressive successes, advances and accomplishments, but understands the imperative for achievement in the next half century. “We’re systematically reviewing our metrics to inform our strategies in education, patient care, outreach and research. We use this information not just for external promotion, but to drive the vision we hold for the future.”

Dr. Mullasseril brings a sense of focused enthusiasm to the office of the dean. “There is vast potential here. We are compelled by mission and vision to seize every opportunity to excel.”

While dental care is a necessary investment to support good health in the long term, Dr. Mullasseril is sensitive to the fact that care may be complex and costly. Every interaction reinforces a patient’s expectations positively or negatively.

“It’s not unreasonable for a patient to want a flawless product and timely treatment. When these are delivered with the utmost kindness and compassion, it’s a win for everybody, and training focused on the patient experience is the foundation to achieve these outcomes.”

Raymond A. Cohlmia, D.D.S., Appointed Executive Director of ADA The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry extends a heartfelt congratulations to Raymond A. Cohlmia, D.D.S., on his appointment as the new executive director of the American Dental Association, the nation’s leading advocate for oral health.

“My experience at the OU College of Dentistry has been instrumental in preparing me for this new role with the American Dental Association,” said Dr. Cohlmia.

“This is an incredible honor and an opportunity that will allow me to serve the entire dental profession. It is, however, bittersweet. I am proud to be a part of the OU College of Dentistry and am confident the college will maintain its tradition of clinical excellence moving forward. I will forever be indebted to this college, this university, and the people of Oklahoma.”

Dr. Cohlmia is a 1988 graduate of the OU College of Dentistry.

Along with 26 years of private practice experience, he served the college as assistant dean for patient care and director of comprehensive care before he was appointed dean in 2015.

Dr. Cohlmia served an integral role in the college’s Legacy Project, a $20 million capital campaign. He also led the college through a change in curriculum, converting to a comprehensive care clinical education model. Additionally, under his leadership, the college has seen a record number of applications for the dental program and a record number of patients served each year.

“Dean Cohlmia is a transformative leader for the OU College of Dentistry, achieving recognition as one of the top dental programs in the country,” said Jason R. Sanders, M.D., MBA, former senior vice president and provost of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. “Dr. Cohlmia likewise is a leader for our OU Health Sciences Center and a trusted ambassador for dental professionals across Oklahoma. We are tremendously proud for his once-in-alifetime opportunity at the American Dental Association to advance dentistry and oral health across the nation and globe.”

New Faculty

College Extends Affordable and Accessible Dental Care in Eastern Oklahoma Last summer, the college announced plans to expand its pre-doctoral program to the OU-Tulsa campus and build a new clinic within the OU Health Physicians Schusterman Center building. Construction of the 5,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art dental clinic began in fall 2021.

“The Tulsa expansion helps our college fulfill one of its primary roles in improving the oral health of Oklahomans by bringing dental services, at substantially reduced fees, into an area of our state with underserved oral health needs,” explained Paul M. Mullasseril, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the college.

Aggressive interventions are needed to elevate Oklahoma from the 49th slot currently held in national rankings for affordable dental care. Expected to open in June 2022, the clinic will provide comprehensive oral health services to patients of all ages. The Tulsa clinic, also referred to as the “tenth practice,” will be student-led under the supervision of college faculty in Tulsa.

In the past five years, the college has provided dental and emergency care to more than 285,000 patients. Nearly onequarter of those patients travel from the northeastern part of the state, often as far as 200 miles, to receive care at the college, located on the OU Health Sciences Center campus in Oklahoma City. The time and expense of travel are significant burdens when seeking affordable dental care.

With this ambitious initiative, the college has deepened its commitment to accomplish two primary goals: to bring affordable, high-quality health care more readily available in eastern Oklahoma; and to advance its educational mission to provide an exceptional dental education that prepares its graduates for successful clinical practice.

“The resources of the OU-Tulsa campus, in conjunction with a premier clinical environment, make the campus an ideal location for this clinical extension. Once completed, this project will allow patients to obtain dental care, along with other physician-provided health care services ranging from internal medicine to women’s health, to specialties like pediatric cardiology, at one convenient location.”

Expanding Our Educational Mission The dental clinic in Tulsa creates greater opportunities for students pursuing professions in dentistry through the highly regarded programs of the OU College of Dentistry.

Students will complete first- and second-year curriculum at the college’s Health Sciences Center location. Beginning in June 2022, students can apply to complete their third and fourth years in Tulsa.

As part of a strategic and comprehensive operations plan, the college is currently soliciting interest among matriculating students, assigning them to the Tulsa clinic at the end of the first year of their dental education. However, with the incoming class of 2027, prospective students will indicate their interest in assignment to the Tulsa clinic during the application process and be notified of selection by the college upon admission to the pre-doctoral program.

These are exciting opportunities that offer significant advantages to students as well as patients, in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa clinics. Together, these clinics help the college fulfill one of its primary roles: to improve the health of the community and surrounding area by bringing dental services, at substantially reduced fees, to underserved populations who might not otherwise have access to high-quality oral health care.

In Gratitude to Delta Dental of Oklahoma

By Anne Harp University of Oklahoma Foundation During a media event on Jan. 20, 2022, the University of Oklahoma announced a $2 million gift from Delta Dental of Oklahoma and Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation to the College of Dentistry to fund a dental clinic on the OU-Tulsa campus. The gift will help to underwrite the cost of construction of the clinic. In recognition of this transformational gift, the clinic will be named the OU College of Dentistry Delta Dental of Oklahoma Comprehensive Care Clinic.

“The OU College of Dentistry is incredibly grateful to Delta Dental of Oklahoma and its Foundation,” said Paul M. Mullasseril, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the college. “This transformational gift will not only help to build a state-of-theart dental clinic on the OU-Tulsa campus, it will also help our college fulfill its primary role of improving the oral health of Oklahomans and expanding access to high-quality dental care at a more affordable cost.”

For more than two decades, Delta Dental of Oklahoma and its foundation (DDOK) have been incredible partners to the college, working hand-in-hand with the College of Dentistry to support its mission of improving the oral health of Oklahomans and educating the dental professionals of tomorrow.

The OU College of Dentistry is the state of Oklahoma’s only doctor of dental surgery program, and has trained more than 73% of Oklahoma’s currently practicing dentists. As part of their education, OU dental students and residents provide necessary oral health care to Oklahomans – an

effort that has long been supported by Delta Dental of Oklahoma and its Foundation.

“The Delta Dental of Oklahoma Comprehensive Care Clinic will not only improve access to care for patients, but will also be a valuable training ground for future dental professionals for generations to come,” said Terrisa Singleton, Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation director.

With this gift, DDOK has generously given a cumulative amount of more than $8.1 million to the College of Dentistry over the past 20 years.

In 2013, DDOK pledged a $3.2 million gift – the largest single gift ever received by the College of Dentistry. This gift was part of the Legacy Project, a $20 million capital campaign – the largest private fundraising effort in the college’s history.

Additionally, this year marks not only the 20th year DDOK has funded dental scholarships at the college, but also marks the milestone of awarding $1 million in scholarships to dental students.

Further, DDOK provides significant support for the college’s Community-Based Dentistry Externship program, which offers students the opportunity to provide additional handson dental care to underserved communities throughout the state. DDOK also has funded more than $230,000 in student research and underwrites the cost of the college’s annual Scientific Day event.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, DDOK has provided more than $100,000 in emergency-care grant funding to bridge the gap between closed dental clinics and patients in need. The foundation also supplied the college with $100,000 in grants for PPE. “Delta Dental of Oklahoma and its foundation have a wideranging influence on what the OU College of Dentistry is able to do, both in terms of patient care and education,” Dr. Mullasseril asserted. “We are very grateful for their partnership and continued support.”

Dr. Rieger Wood to Serve as Director for New Tulsa Clinic

underinsured or those who may not be able to access dental care. Dr. Wood is past president of the Oklahoma Dental Association and Tulsa County Dental Society, and currently serves American’s Dentists Care Foundation as president of its board of directors His numerous honors and awards include the Pierre Fauchard Academy Distinguished Dentist Citation, the Oklahoma Dental Association President’s Leadership Award and Thomas Jefferson Citizenship Award.

In addition, the college has named Chalmers Rieger Wood III, D.D.S., to direct its new clinical operation in Tulsa.

A faculty member of the college since 2006, Dr. Wood was named clinical assistant professor in 2014, and currently serves as a group practice director in the Division of Comprehensive Care. He also served on the college’s COVID-19 Task Force, COVID-19 Re-engagement Committee, and strategic workgroups engaged in the planning and implementation of the forthcoming dental program expansion in Tulsa.

Dr. Wood earned his doctor of dental surgery degree at the College of Dentistry in 1981. The same year, he established a private dental practice in Tulsa, which he continues to own and operate. Dr. Wood also completed an advanced education in general education residency program at the College of Dentistry in 2015.

Service to the community and to the dental profession is important to Dr. Wood. He served as chair of the first Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OkMOM), a free dental clinic offering treatment to underserved patients - the uninsured,

Student Perspective Raised in Oologah, Oklahoma, Jack Koszykowski, Class of 2024, said the OU College of Dentistry was his first choice for a dental degree. Not only was he drawn by its reputation for superior dental education, but studying at OU would allow him to stay in his home state, where he intends to establish his own dental practice.

According to Koszykowski, dentistry is among the most noble of professions. He said he chose to pursue a career in dentistry because it represents the perfect combination of science, health and art. “I love to work with my hands - to create. Dentistry allows me to use my passions to restore health, function and aesthetics. Now at the halfway point to becoming a full-fledged dentist, that belief has only grown stronger.”

At The College

Koszykowski looks forward to working in the new state-ofthe-art clinic in Tulsa, which will replicate an actual dental practice and look less like an academic setting. It is a move he describes as bittersweet. “The dental class of 2024 has become my family and it’s a difficult step to take without most of my classmates. I fully expect working in Tulsa will be a great opportunity to advance my dental education.”

The ability to meet the oral health needs of an underserved population will benefit the community as well as the students, and Koszykowski is excited to be among the first students helping to launch this new initiative. “We will pave the way for future classes. I’m sure there will be challenges, but I’m confident of Dr. Wood’s leadership and the university’s support, to prepare me for a practice of my own and shape me into the best dentist I can be.”

Brady Culbertson, Class of 2023, followed a tradition in his family of business professionals, earning an undergraduate degree in entrepreneurship at Oklahoma State University.

It was during an internship that Culbertson realized sitting at a desk answering phones was not his idea of career fulfillment.

Contemplating the direction of his life, he recalled his experience as a high school student in braces, and his fascination with dentistry, its concepts and processes.

“Being from a family of business professionals, I never thought of health care as a career option. However, through research I discovered that, three years into my

entrepreneurship degree, I could complete that degree while also completing dental school prerequisites.”

A year later, during the application and interview process, it became clear that his lack of dental background and experience placed him at a disadvantage. “I began to apply for dental positions that would increase my chances during the next cycle to better position myself for acceptance in the OU dental program.” He successfully pursued a number of such opportunities that broadened his knowledge of the clinical and business practices of dentistry.

Originally from Frisco, Texas, Culbertson became engaged to a fellow student at OSU, making a long-term stay in Oklahoma significantly more appealing. As it happened, Culbertson’s future brother-in-law is a graduate of the OU College of Dentistry. “I knew that OU was the dental school for me.”

He said the OU College of Dentistry expansion is timely, aligning with population growth in the Tulsa area, and the advantages for dental education are substantial.

“As students, we’ll interact with a larger patient pool, hone our skills and graduate as confident and capable dental professionals. While growing our skills and knowledge, we are also able to offer our patients more affordable dental treatments of excellent quality.”

The college’s presence in Tulsa offers multiple benefits – the opportunity to improve dental health in an underserved population; gaining real-world experience in patient practice; refining and learning new skills; and the experience of pioneering a new venture.

“We will acquire a unique set of skills that we wouldn’t necessarily obtain at the well-established Oklahoma City campus. We also have a rare opportunity to learn from Dr. Wood, who has not only proven his outstanding dental skills and techniques, but who is also a successful entrepreneur,” Culbertson said. “My fiancé and I plan to start our life together in the Tulsa area, where I plan to establish my private practice. Completing my education in Tulsa allows us to begin this dream a year earlier than planned.

It’s an honor to be part of this new and exhilarating initiative, with Dr. Wood to help guide me through this next year in Tulsa.”

At The College

New Faculty Practice Opening in 2023 in the Heart of the OU Health Campus Tentatively opening in early 2023, the college’s facutly practice, called OU Health Dentistry, will be moving to a new location. With a long history of operating out of the college, the new facility will move a few blocks to provide increased convenience and access to patients.

The clinic will be located in the heart of the downtown Oklahoma City OU Health campus in the building that previously housed the Oklahoma City Clinic. This fully remodeled facility will feature a 12,600-square-foot comprehensive dental practice, with 1,940 square feet solely dedicated to our progressive research programs.

With 20 operatories, the college plans to extend care through all phases of dentistry, in one location, for all dental needs. The clinic will offer innovative technology through digital dentistry, including 3D imagery.

This new clinical facility provides faculty the opportunity to expand their practice and be a continued resource for collaborative care management.

Dental Community Comes Together to Host Free Veteran’s Clinic

procedures, ranging from routine cleanings and fillings to more complex procedures like crowns and extractions. At the March 2021 event, 60 Oklahoma veterans received free dental care; at the November 2021 event, 56 Oklahoma veterans received free dental care.

Last year, the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry and Oklahoma Dental Association joined forces with Henry Schein, Oklahoma Dental Foundation, Dale K. Graham Veteran’s Foundation, Dentists for the Disabled and Elderly in Need of Treatment, Eastern Oklahoma Donated Dental Services, and other organizations from across the state on to provide essential dental care to Oklahoma veterans. The first clinic, which was postponed from November 2021 due to COVID, was held on March 27, 2021. The second clinic was held on Nov. 6, 2021 in observance of Veteran’s Day.

To help facilitate care during both events, Henry Schein donated an array of products, including restoratives, personal protective equipment and consumables.

With limited dental benefits provided to veterans, getting the necessary oral health care can be difficult, and often, veterans delay urgent needs. Regular dental appointments are essential in evaluating, diagnosing, preventing, or treating oral diseases, which can affect systemic health.

“Veteran’s Day Clinic is a fantastic event at the OU College of Dentistry because it provides an opportunity for people who are a part of underserved communities to receive care.

Being a part of the previous event and this year’s event gave me the opportunity to see patients who returned to receive more care,” said Ali Agee, DS4, Student Council president. “One patient in particular was able to receive the remaining care she needed before being able to receive dentures. This event is a great way for dental students, faculty, staff and outside dentists/volunteers to make a significant difference in the oral health of the veterans who have served our country.”

“As the dean, it is my goal to support the mission of our college and provide the people of Oklahoma high-quality dental care at an affordable cost,” said Paul Mullasseril, D.D.S., dean of the college. “Further, as a former Army Reserve member, I understand the challenges that veterans face when trying to obtain accessible and affordable dental care. Therefore, I made it my mission during my ODA presidency to plan a free dental care day for Oklahoma veterans. My hope is to continue this clinic into the future and treat even more veterans who desperately need dental treatment.”

One veteran in particular had her upper teeth extracted at the clinic in March and the students were able to complete the job in November to get her ready to be fitted for dentures.

College Dedicates Practices in Recognition of Generous Alumni Gifts Ten years ago, the College of Dentistry set into motion a plan to invest in its future. The building, which had been primarily untouched since its completion in 1976, was in need of major renovations. Thus, the college launched the Legacy Project, a $20 million capital campaign.

Through the generosity of alumni and friends, the college raised more than $12 million during Phase I of the campaign.

As a result, the college was able to remodel 40% of the building, providing students with state-of-the-art classrooms and three brand new comprehensive care clinics that focus on patient-centered treatment.

“The generous support we receive from our alumni is critical to the continued success of our college,” said Paul M. Mullasseril, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the college. “Gifts such as these allow us to continue to attract and retain the brightest students and top faculty, all the while contributing to our goal to become one of the top clinical education program in the nation.”

On Oct. 29, 2021 the college dedicated the Brown and Hookom Family Practice in recognition of Dr. S. Kelly Brown (Class of 1976), Dr. Nathan K. Brown (Class of 2007) and Dr. Matthew Hookom (Class of 2009).

“The difference between success and significance is legacy,” said Dr. S. Kelly Brown. “What better way to invest in legacy than by giving back to the institution that trained me and my family how to serve others while making a wonderful life.”

Both practices are located within the Dr. Frank J. Miranda Comprehensive Care Clinic. Dr. Miranda and his wife, Joan, were in attendance at both dedication ceremonies.

In the fall of 2021, the college was pleased to recognize the generosity of two very special families, and hosted dedication ceremonies to name practices in honor of their generous gifts.

On Aug. 26, 2021, the college dedicated the Harroz Family Practice in recognition of the generous support of Dr. Edward Harroz, Jr. (Class of 1981) and Dr. Edward Harroz, III (Class of 2007).

“Having a clinic named in my honor was most definitely the highlight of my career in education,” said Dr. Miranda, who retired from in 2016 after a 42-year career with the College of Dentistry. “To have three families that include five of my former students request that their dedicated practices be placed in the Miranda Clinic is icing on that cake. I could not be more humbled and honored.”

J. Dean Robertson Society Established in 1988, the J. Dean Robertson Society is the College of Dentistry’s private annual giving fund and is composed of alumni and friends who are dedicated to the advancement of the college. This annual campaign is among the largest fundraising efforts for the college.

The society is named in honor of Dr. Joseph Dean Robertson, a beloved pediatric dentist and former faculty member. Dr. Robertson was an icon within the Oklahoma dental community. Well-known and respected as a practitioner, Dr. Robertson is remembered as the quintessential professional. At the college, he was adored by faculty, students, administrators and alumni alike.

Gifts made to the J. Dean Robertson Society support student scholarships, student externships, student research projects, indigent care for patients and capital improvements, among others.

Throughout its history, donors to the society have given collectively more than $7.3 million.

Leaving a Legacy: Dr. Krista Jones Includes College in Estate Planning For Krista Jones, D.D.S., the relationships she made at OU—as a member of the cheer squad, in her sorority, and particularly with the OU College of Dentistry class of 1972— form some of her fondest memories. “We all became very close,” said Dr. Jones of her peers. “It was fun to laugh with each other and also be available to help each other and mentor each other. Those relationships made it memorable and wonderful for me.”

Recently retired, Dr. Jones’ distinguished career garnered numerous professional accolades, including the Oklahoma Dental Association’s Dentist of the Year in 2012 and the James A. Saddoris Lifetime of Leadership Award in 2021.

Active in numerous civic organizations as well, the energetic practitioner always made giving back a priority.

“I’ve always believed that part of our responsibility as a professional includes giving back to your community as well as your profession, with your time, your talents and your gifts. So, I’ve stayed in touch with the OU College of Dentistry and helped in any way I can,” said Dr. Jones.

Dr. Jones has been active in the J. Dean Robertson Society and gives an annual lecture to OU dental students on mediation review.

“My husband and I have tried to live our lives giving back to others,” said Dr. Jones. “My career and the opportunity to be successful were provided to me by the OU College of Dentistry. It wouldn’t be possible without that. I’m so thankful and appreciative of the amazing education I received.”

As a part of their giving philosophy, Dr. Jones and her husband, Craig, have decided to include the OU College of Dentistry in their estate planning. “We’ve given back along the way, but we wanted to see that legacy continue after we are gone,” she said, “This was a perfect way for us to hopefully impact the lives of future dental students.”

Dr. Jones noted that estate giving has the added benefit of allowing her and Craig to enjoy their retirement fully. “It doesn’t affect our current lifestyle at all,” said Dr. Jones, “but later it will make a difference to the institutions that made a difference in our lives.”

Always leading by example, Dr. Jones has actively encouraged others in her profession to plan a gift to OU. “Even if you have children or other beneficiaries, you can always give a portion of your estate,” said Dr. Jones, who wishes to enable—and inspire—future generations of dental professionals.

“I hope that future students who maybe would not have had an opportunity to go to dental school will be able to do so,” said Dr. Jones, “but also that they would be inspired to give back to their profession and their community.”

College Announces New Leadership and Key Roles Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs

Nanay (Nan) Shadid, D.D.S., was named the new assistant dean of clinical affairs on Sept. 29, 2021.

This announcement came shortly after the appointment of Paul Mullasseril, D.D.S., M.S., was promoted to dean of the college.

“I am honored and feel privileged to be the assistant dean of clinical affairs and take the responsibility seriously,” said Dr. Shadid. “By providing an excellent clinical education, we will in turn provide our patients the best possible treatment. I want to know my grandchildren or your grandchildren will to be able to receive excellent care from any graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.”

Dr. Shadid graduated with a bachelor’s in biology from Oklahoma State University in 1982. She then went on to dental school, where she graduated from the college in 1985. Dr. Shadid and her husband, Dr. Scot Shadid, have worked alongside each other in their private practice and at the college.

She first came to the college as a part-time clinical instructor in Operative Dentistry in 1985 and worked in pre-clinic and clinic. In 2013 she was awarded outstanding part-time faculty and in 2017 outstanding full-time faculty.

“Dr. Shadid has a wealth of clinical knowledge and experience, both from her private practice and while serving as a Group Practice director, division head of Comprehensive Care, and chair of restorative sciences,” said Paul Mullasseril, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the college. “Her dedication and hard work has highlighted the impactful change in the area of comprehensive, patient-centered care. I am excited to continue to work with Dr. Shadid as we move toward the goal to fully integrate digital dentistry into our curriculum and continue to graduate excellent clinicians with a sound scientific knowledge base and a thirst for continuing education.”

Interim Assistant Dean for Student Affairs

On Jan. 3, the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry announced Zachary Dacus, D.D.S., as the new interim assistant dean for student affairs.

“Dr. Dacus has been an excellent mentor and teacher to the students,” said Paul Mullasseril, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the college. “He will continue to be engaged with students as their advisor and advocate to ensure they have the opportunities for a successful experience in their dental education.”

Dr. Dacus attended Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where he obtained his doctor of dental surgery degree in 2004. He joined the faculty at the OU College of Dentistry in 2015.

“Dean Mullasseril asked me to fill a need within the Dean’s office,” said Dr. Dacus. “My current involvement in a variety of courses has given me an appreciation for the expectations placed on our students. I will do my best to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.”

Dr. Dacus will continue to serve as division head of Operative Dentistry at the college and will work closely with Kevin Haney, D.D.S., assistant dean of academic affairs, for a smooth transition.

Division Head of Dental Biomaterials

Fernando Luis Esteban Florez, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., was named the division head of Dental Biomaterials in the Department of Restorative Sciences on Aug. 5, 2021.

The college’s Division of Dental Biomaterials in the Department of Restorative Sciences is a key piece to introduce new dental materials that help oral health care advance. Dr. Esteban Florez came to the college as a postdoctoral fellow and later became an assistant professor. Sharukh Khajotia, B.D.S., M.S., PhD, Associate Dean for Research and Innovation had been serving as interim division head over the last several years.

“We are excited about Dr. Esteban Florez’s achievements and involvement in curriculum, education, teaching, and campus integration and what he will bring to the college in this position,“ said Raymond Cohlmia, D.D.S., former dean of the college. “I know that Drs. Khajotia and Esteban Florez will continue to work diligently to move the division and the college into a progressive and nationally recognized research arena.”

AEGD Interim Director

Mary Hamburg, D.D.S., M.S., is a 2008 graduate of the college, where she also received her periodontal and implant specialty training. She has served the Oklahoma City metro area as a board-certified periodontitis for 10 years.

Dr. Hamburg was an assistant clinical professor in the college’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry program for three years before becoming the interim director in 2021. “I always wanted to be passionate about what I do plus make someone’s day better. Dentistry has given me the opportunity to passionately help people,” said Dr. Hamburg. “I did not realize that teaching would become part of that passion. By becoming the interim director in AEGD, I am so thankful that I am able to teach and guide future dentist into the career that I am passionate about while improving the quality of life for the people in Oklahoma.”

She is a member of the Oklahoma Dental Association Board of Trustees, currently serving as editor for the ODA Journal. She has also served as an executive board member of the Oklahoma Association of Women Dentists and is a member of the American Association of Women Dentists.

She lives in Norman, Oklahoma, with her husband, Dustin, and their boys: Daxton (9) and Caden (6).

Director of Predoctoral Periodontics

Tracey Whitley, D.D.M., M.S., attended Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, for her dental training, earning her doctorate in dental medicine in 2014. She returned to Oklahoma City, completing her periodontal residency and master of science degree in periodontics at the college in 2017. During her time in residency, Dr. Whitley was selected to participate in the national Straumann Resident Symposium and conducted research evaluating gene regulation and the genetic component to periodontal disease.

During this time, she also went into private practice as a periodontist for three years. During which, she also served as a part-time clinical instructor in periodontics for the college. In 2020, Dr. Whitley transitioned to the college full time, pursuing her passion for education and to share her love of periodontics with the dental students. Currently, Dr. Whitley is a clinical assistant professor at the college and serves as the new director of pre-doctoral periodontics and the course director for all pre-doctoral and dental hygiene periodontal courses. She said, “My favorite part about teaching (no matter the role) is getting to help instill in our students a passion for caring for their patients as people, not requirements, establishing a foundation for quality care for the rest of their careers. I know when the students leave here, they will in turn teach their patients, staff and other colleagues carrying our teaching beyond the walls of this building.”

While she loves teaching, she also enjoys getting to continue practicing her craft and treating her own patients in the Faculty Practice.

College Welcomes New Faculty in 2021 Ashley Clark, D.D.S.

Ashley Clark, D.D.S., was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Oklahoma State University and then worked as a dental assistant for three years. Dr. Clark decided to pursue a career as a dental hygienist and graduated from the college’s dental hygiene program in 2015 from the Bartlesville site. Upon graduation, she married the love of her life and they moved to Edmond, Oklahoma, where they currently reside. They have two kids, Gavin and Laureline, who keep them on their toes and bring them joy daily. Dr. Clark loves music, theatre, college football, and all things Disney. Although Dr. Clark was sad to leave her dental family that she has worked with the past six years, she is excited to give back to the college and help shape the future of the dental hygiene profession.

Brad Cummings, D.D.S.

Brad Cummings, D.D.S., graduated from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, class of 2016. He grew up in Southern California and moved to Oklahoma in 2016 to start a family. Now, he and his wife have two children. Dr. Cummings has founded the nonprofit Smile For Good Foundation and Grill Guard mouthguards. Grill Guard connects dentists with their community through sports safety. At the college, he will primarily be working with comprehensive care and the growth of digital dentistry. He takes pride in the continuing education of technological advances of dentistry today in order to better serve the community.

Robin W. Graham, D.H.

Robin W. Graham, D.H., earned her bachelor’s degree in allied health education and a master’s degree in education from the University of Central Oklahoma, and she completed the Dental Hygiene program from Rose State College. After graduating, she started her career as a dental hygienist in private practice for over 10 years. Graham began adjunct clinical teaching at Rose State College in 1990 and in 1998 moved into a full-time professor position in both the Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs.

In 2015, she became the director of dental hygiene and served in that position for three and a half years. Prior to beginning at the college, she worked for a corporate dental practice, where she developed and licensed the curriculum for a 12-week dental assisting program. Graham held the position of director and placed trained dental assistants into employment throughout the corporate dental practices. She is excited to be a part of the faculty at the college’s dental hygiene program and looks forward to finishing out her career in dental education here at the college.

Kathleen Higgins, D.D.S.

Kathleen Higgins, D.D.S., serves as a clinical assistant professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. She is originally from the East Coast and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry in 2017, where her interest in oral and maxillofacial pathology began. Dr. Higgins completed residency training in oral and maxillofacial pathology at New York Presbyterian-Queens and went on to pursue fellowship training in head and neck pathology at the University of Chicago. During both residency and fellowship, she gained tremendous knowledge, enjoyed teaching, and was able to participate in numerous research projects. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to relocate to the Oklahoma City area with her husband and their English Bulldog, Scully.

Jaewon Kim, D.D.S.

Jaewon Kim, D.D.S, graduated Kyungpook National University, School of Dentistry in 2006. He immediately joined the Oral and Maxillofacial surgery program at Daegu Fatima Hospital until 2010 as an intern and resident. He then served in the army as a public official and head of dental department at Gapyung Health Center, until 2013. During his service, he also did his Ph.D. in oral anatomy at Yonsei University, School of Dentistry. From 2016-2018, he worked as a general dentist in Vancouver, Canada, after obtaining his Canadian dental licensure. Dr. Kim’s interest in surgery led him to Periodontics residency program in Buffalo, New York, and he did research under Dr. Praveen Arany’s mentorship during 2018-2021. He is now a faculty member at the college as a clinical assistant professor in periodontics and his focus of research is on clinical applications of 3D printing and scaffold for bone regeneration.

Daryn Lu, D.D.S.

Daryn Lu, D.D.S., was born on the West Coast and raised on the East Coast. Dr. Lu has called Oklahoma his home since 1999. A 2015 graduate of the college, Dr. Lu’s passion for his profession shows through his journey as a general dentist. He serves the boards of the American Dental Association New Dentist Committee (District 12 Representative), Oklahoma County Dental Society, Academy of General Dentistry Oklahoma chapter, J. Dean Robertson Society, Leadership OKC’s Youth Leadership Exchange, and is a guest writer for the American Dental Association New Dentist Now and igniteDDS. He volunteers his time overseas leading mission trips with the Christian Dental Society and locally as the past-president of the National Association of Asian American Professionals OKC chapter (NAAAP OKC). He is married to his best friend and clear better half, Dr. Edith Quinonez Lu.

Lauren Lunday, D.D.S.

Lauren Lunday, D.D.S., is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. She earned her undergraduate degree in zoology Bio-Medical Sciences from the University of Oklahoma, and her doctor of dental surgery degree from the college. She then attended the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University, where she completed her oral and maxillofacial surgery internship and residency. Having a passion for academics, Dr. Lunday struck a balance between academics and private practice. She serves the OU Health team as a clinical assistant professor in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery pre-doctorate and post-doctorate departments and as a co-course director for the predoctorate department. She holds hospital appointments with multiple local hospitals.

Dr. Lunday is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a physician member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.

Nick Mechas, D.D.S.

Nick Mechas, D.D.S., is beyond excited to be in Oklahoma for his cleft and craniofacial training, having moved here from Philadelphia, where he completed an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Temple Hospital. Prior to that, the University of Louisville had been his home for both hi undergraduate and dental school. Dr. Mechas has also lived in Chicago for an internship, Barcelona for study abroad, grew up in Kentucky, and was born in Montreal. He is fluent in French and Spanish and enjoys golfing, skiing and hiking. The pandemic was not all bad as he got engaged last year.

Mike Willbanks, D.D.S.

J. Michael Willbanks, D.D.S., is a 1979 graduate of Oklahoma Christian College. After receiving his undergraduate degree, he came to the college and he graduated in 1984 with his doctor of dental surgery degree. After graduating from the college, he attended a post-graduate surgical and prosthetics training in implantology and went to the Misch Implant Institute in 1997. He is a member of several professional associations, including the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and the American College of Oral Implantology. Dr. Willbanks was in private practice for more than 20 years and then spent the last few in a corporate setting. He retired from practice after 37 years and is excited to be a full-time faculty member at the college.

2021 Faculty Retirements David Clement, D.D.S.

David Clement, D.D.S., was born in Hettinger, North Dakota. Dr. Clement went to Jamestown College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in biology. He then went to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, where he received his doctorate of dental surgery degree in 1981 and a certificate in endodontics in 1992 from the University of Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Clement began his career at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as an assistant professor in endodontics, eventually becoming a clinical assistant professor in 1995 and professor at UTHSC College of Graduate Health Sciences in 2012.

He came to the college in 2001 as an assistant professor and became chair of the department of endodontics in 2006. In 2012, he left the college for a few years to be the director of graduate endodontics at the University of Tennessee before coming back to the college in 2015. Dr. Clement served the college for 15 years.

Laurie Cunningham, R.D.H.

Laurie Cunningham served as an associate professor at the college. She instructed dental hygiene and dental students in their predoctoral treatment. She also taught geriatric dentistry and applied dental materials. Cunningham was involved in many professional societies and organizations throughout her career. She served as president of the Oklahoma Dental Hygienists’ Association and the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry Dental Hygiene Advisory Committee, among many others. She actively volunteered at the Ministries of Jesus Dental Clinic and enjoyed volunteering at the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy dental event each year.

John Dmytryk, D.D.S., Ph.D.

John Dmytryk, D.D.S., Ph.D., was born in Westfield, New Jersey, and grew up in Illinois and Delaware. During his junior year of high school, he became a janitor for an office complex owned by a dentist, which sparked his interest in dentistry. Dr. Dmytryk attended the University of Delaware and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1977. He met his wife and soul-mate, Jane, while attending college. He went to the University of Florida to attend dental school and graduated in 1981 and pursued specialty training and a doctorate in cell biology from the University of North Carolina in 1990.

Dr. Dmytryk joined the college on Aug. 1, 1990, as an assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics. During his time at the college, he was also a tenured professor in periodontics, director of graduate periodontics, associate dean for research and associate dean for academic affairs. He was active in research which allowed him to travel to many different countries. In 2003, he was awarded a $9.8 million COBRE grant.

He was also awarded the Presidential Professorship in 2000. Dr. Dmytryk is looking forward to retirement with his beloved wife doing meaningful service activities, visiting their daughter and spending time riding bikes and hiking. Dr. Dmytryk served the college for 31 years.

Dr. Haney Receives Regent’s Professorship

“I was very honored and humbled to receive the Regents’ Professorship,” said Haney.“I have to give credit to the college, its faculty, staff, and students. They are what has allowed me to receive this recognition. I have always viewed ‘obligations’ as the single most important word on my diploma. I feel that giving back, whether it be teaching or service, is a what makes our profession so special. Giving back, or giving ‘forward,’ is our legacy. Receiving the Regents’ Professorship inspires me that much more.”

Dr. Haney is a 1989 graduate of the college and has been a faculty member at the college since 1996, after spending many years serving as a commissioned officer with the United States Public Health Service where he was assigned to the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, and stationed at the Gallup Indian Medical Center.

Kevin Haney, D.D.S., M.S. Kevin Haney, D.D.S., M.S., assistant dean for academic affairs and professor in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry, was awarded the Regents’ Professorship from the OU Health Sciences Center as part of the 2020-2021 Distinguished Faculty Awards and Honors ceremony in April 2021.

To qualify for a Regents’ Professorship, a faculty member must have rendered outstanding service to the university, to the academic community, or to an academic or professional discipline through extraordinary achievement in academic administration or professional service. The appointment is for life.

He is an active member in many societies and organizations across the country, including the American Dental Association, the Oklahoma Dental Association, and the Southwest Society of Pediatric Dentists. Additionally, he is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Dr. Haney has also received several other awards prior to the Regents’ Professorship, including the Oklahoma Dental Association’s President’s Leadership award in 2003 and 2008.

Dr. Haney is only the second faculty member of the college to receive this prestigious honor. The first dean of the college, Dr. William E. Brown, received the professorship in 1987.

“The college is extremely proud of Dr. Haney and his unwavering dedication to our college, our students, and to the dental profession,” said Raymond A. Professor Beatty is also the chair of the Oklahoma Oral Health Coalition, an organization aimed at advancing the oral health of Oklahomans through collaboration, coordination and education.

Many Oklahomans lack access to adequate dental care.

As thousands become eligible to receive dental benefits through Medicaid expansion, Professor Beatty is providing leadership for coalition partners and stakeholders to create the state’s first strategic oral health plan since 2009.

Marsha Wilkes Beatty, B.S., M.P.H. The college congratulated Professor Marsha Wilkes Beatty, B.S., MPH., on being named a 2021 Health Equity Hero: Champions of the Pandemic July 13, 2021 by DentaQuest for her efforts in preserving access to better equitable oral health care on.

Professor Beatty has long been a champion for oral health in Oklahoma and across the United States. In her role at the college, she serves as assistant professor of research in the Community Dentistry Division and director of the Senior Externship Program, which provides students with handson clinical education experience in rural and underserved communities throughout Oklahoma, where access to dental care remains a particular challenge.

DentaQuest, a purpose-driven oral health care company dedicated to improving the oral health of all, announced its 2021 Health Equity Heroes: Champions of the Pandemic.

Now in its seventh year, the DentaQuest Health Equity Hero program celebrates individuals who preserve access to equitable oral care and health care for all. This year, DentaQuest chose heroes who assisted those most at-risk during the pandemic and who continue to expand that access today.

In addition to celebrating and promoting the contributions of the 2021 Health Equity Heroes, DentaQuest is providing a $5,000 charitable contribution in the name of each hero to a nonprofit of their choice.

Professor Beatty is dividing her award funds among multiple nonprofits, including Neighborhood Services Organization, Good Shepherd Ministries, Catholic Charities of Eastern Oklahoma, Oklahoma Dental Foundation, Inc., and the OOHC.

Kim Takes First Place at International Conference The college is pleased to announce that Jaewon Kim, D.D.S., MSD, Ph.D., was awarded first place for ‘Clinical Applications of 3D Printing Technique in Advanced Dental Surgery with Fused Filament Fabrication and Stereolithography’ in an E-Poster competition in the case report category, at the Saudi International Periodontics Conference 2021.

“I am very honored to win this award again, and I will keep pursuing my career in research and education in the Division of Periodontics, and overall development at the OU College of Dentistry,” said Dr. Kim. “I have a very strong interest in the field of 3D printing, and I am blessed to work in an environment that is very supportive.”

Dr. Kim began his career with an interest in oral surgery in 2006. He completed four years of residency and later attended Yonsei University School of Dentistry in Seoul, South Korea, to obtain a Ph.D. in dental science. He later went to Canada, where he passed their licensure to practice in general dentistry. After working in general dentistry for a couple of years, Dr. Kim moved to New York to join the University at Buffalo School of Dentistry’s Advanced Education in Periodontics program.

In 2021, Dr. Kim completed the periodontics program and an oral biology master’s program in Buffalo. He then joined the faculty in the Department of Periodontics at the OU College of Dentistry in September 2021.

Lamb Wins Humanitarian of the Year On Sept. 20, 2021, Robert Lamb, D.D.S., M.S., received the 2021 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Humanitarian of the Year Award.

“The dental team, for the most part, are very giving people. We all have opportunities to serve people with our talents. You don’t need to travel internationally; you can serve in your community or church. When you start giving, you will realize quickly how much you get back,” said Dr. Lamb.

The award was presented to Dr. Lamb during the 103rd annual meeting. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is the largest gathering of oral and maxillofacial surgeons. At the annual meeting, more than 30 members received an award for their accomplishments in education, research, advocacy and humanitarianism.

“Dr. Robert Lamb, clinical assistant professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, was rightfully recognized at the AAOMS annual meeting held in Nashville, Tennessee,” said Paul Mullasseril, dean of the OU College of Dentistry. “The award recognized members who have sacrificed substantial time and effort within the local and global communities, resulting in improved quality of life for the public.”

This is the second time Dr. Kim has won this award. He was awarded first place in the same category in 2020.

College Collaborates with University of Sao Paulo, Brazil Fernando Luis Esteban Florez, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., came to the OU College of Dentistry from the Sao Paulo State University, Brazil, in 2012, recruited for post-doctoral research specific to dentistry. Working closely with Sharukh Khajotia, B.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., associate dean for research and innovation, Dr. Esteban Florez’s area of research leverages his expertise in nanoparticle synthesis and novel dental bio-materials.

His connections within Brazil’s scientific community held the keys to establishing long-term collaborative relationships with multiple groups.

In the years since his arrival at the college, Dr. Esteban Florez, who heads the Division of Dental Biomaterials, has been instrumental in the acceleration of international collaboration. Previously, Khajotia was the only faculty member with any international ties, and collaborative efforts were not ongoing in nature.

Dr. Esteban Florez was able to build upon

existing relationships to establish focused, sustained collaboration with universities highly regarded for their research activities with applications in the field of dentistry.

Dr. Esteban Florez has also established significant collaborations across the United States.

The college is now hosting its third Brazilian Ph.D. student and expects to host a faculty member who will spend a month in onsite labs. In what represents a true exchange of talent and personnel, Dr. Esteban Florez recently spent six weeks in Brazil, working on various projects. He leads a research team whose innovations in new antibacterial nanoparticles promise to generate significant intellectual property.

“Historically, we’ve worked most closely with UNESP and State University of Campinas School of Dentistry at Piracicaba, Brazil,” explained Dr. Esteban Florez.

“Over the years, we have developed a collaborative relationship with two others. Significantly, our collaboration with University Positivo, in the Brazilian state of Parana, has been most productive to date, in terms of published papers.

In addition, students from Positivo have worked in our labs, conducting meaningful

research in material development and characterizations.”

Dr. Khajotia said, “The broader picture is that we have this amazing two-way collaboration, producing not only published articles, but building support for NIH grant applications forthcoming from Dr. Esteban Florez. Further, nanoparticle technology will translate to myriad products and different types of products in dentistry, as well as applications in an array of engineering specialties.”

One Brazilian university is working with nanoparticles and novel materials for wound dressings, an area of innovation with potentially sweeping impact. “For example, dressings used in the treatment of burn victims become contaminated quickly.

Wound dressings infused with antibacterial nanoparticles promise to dramatically reduce the problem of contamination and infection associated with this type of injury.”

Early in this initiative, the nanoparticle subject couldn’t be pursued comprehensively in the facilities at the college. “As dentists, we lacked the necessary expertise and equipment to actually do the work in our labs. Therefore, we had to establish collaborations with

As a result, the line of research that began in 2013 is now being aggressively pursued through another strategic collaborative relationship with a senior scientist at the Center for Nanophasing Material Sciences, housed at Oak Ridge. “Oak Ridge transferred the technologies related to synthesis and manipulation of nanoparticles so that they can be incorporated and functionalized into dental materials and, most important, to make nanoparticles functional within the dental bio-materials,” said Dr. Esteban Florez.

Dr. Kury described the experience as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and found the College of Dentistry a remarkable place to advance his career goals.

A Brazilian dentist, Matheus Kury Rodrigues, D.D.S., M.S., has conducted a Fulbright research fellowship at the college. His investigations is focused on the characterization of novel nanofilled tooth-bleaching agents, with biomimetic properties developed by Dr. Esteban Florez at the Division of Dental Biomaterials.

Dr. Kury made his first visit to the college in 2019. Delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Kury began a nine-month intensive program as a Visiting Scholar Researcher in the Division of Biomaterials in March 2021. He continues his research on the characterization of nanobleaching agents to whiten teeth. Working with Florez and others in the division, he has

Drs. Esteban Florez and Khajotia at the college competed at the OU Growth Fund and have successfully secured a $75,000 grant from the OU Office of Technology Development to further the translation of experimental materials into the marketplace. Those funds were partially used to purchase equipment that now allows dental researchers to synthesize nanoparticles and other materials in the labs of the Division of Dental Biomaterials.

“Now we are capable of fabricating different types of nanoparticles and dental polymers. Experimental materials produced are then tested using numerous ISO and ADA/ANSI standards to determine the properties of materials developed. The functionalization strategies used by Dr. Esteban Florez allows the incorporation of nanoparticles into several dental polymers used in restorative and prosthodontic applications, including dental adhesive resins, resin composites, denture materials, dental cements and bleaching agents, to name a few,” said Dr. Khajotia.

Dr. Esteban Florez is excited about ongoing research focused on dentistry and seeing the many branches of research that extend into other fields. “Dentistry is a fascinating subject, and materials commonly used – polymers, ceramics and metals – have important engineer applications that allow use to developed relevant secondary applications, including antimicrobial nanostructured coatings to control cross-contamination in any number of settings.

There’s an incredible scope of potential engineering uses and applications.”

While dentistry is an ideal platform for development and launch, Drs. Esteban Florez and Khajotia envision a wide range of valuable engineering applications related to health care. Dr. Florez explained, “We believe even more impressive applications will be vital in efforts to control bacterial contamination in areas including, but not limited to, public transportation – bus and train stations, airports, and even ambulances.”

The international collaboration encompasses ties made at OU’s Norman campus in drone engineering, aerospace engineering and bioengineering. “Additionally, we are strengthening existing ties with researchers at Oregon Health and Sciences University, and other academic institutions whose research aligns with polymer and materials sciences,” Dr. Khajotia said.

“Our college is quickly becoming recognized as a leader in innovative research. We are excited to be an institution that is shaping the future of dentistry, and we thank Dr. Khajotia for his leadership and further creating this opportunity for the college.”

The Brazilian Federal Foundation for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education is currently sponsoring Mayara Zaghi Dal Picolo, D.D.S., M.S., in a collaborative research project at the college. Dr. Zaghi was introduced to Drs. Esteban Florez and Khajotia at a conference she attended as a presenter, and became aware of possible opportunities for collaboration. In particular, she learned about a research project to develop and characterize novel nanofilled dental glazes with long-term, non-leaching antibacterial properties. With a visa to enter the United States, she arrived at the college in September 2021.

“The possibility of a collaborative research project was very exciting to me,” said Dr. Zaghi. “During my visit, I witnessed cuttingedge nanofabrication strategies and advanced characterization techniques that are routinely conducted in the Division of Dental Biomaterials, which would help me prepare to launch an independent and well-funded research program.”

“Dr. Zaghi’s work is anticipated to provide fundamental information regarding the loading, dispersion and functionalization of antibacterial metaloxide nanoparticles in dental ceramics,” Dr. Esteban Florez said. “This will translate into novel materials with long-term and sustainable properties. Further, it will allow our group to develop secondary applications such as ceramic nanocoatings, used to control cross contamination in multiple settings. The benefits we realize will help to decrease health care costs across the state and nation.”

Dr. Esteban Florez credits the insight and vision of former dean Raymond Cohlmia, D.D.S., and Dr. Khajotia, in supporting and expanding the research mission of the college. “Our goal is to increase and ensure the level of expertise that allows us to progress in multiple directions, with products that translate into the larger marketplace. The mission is to make sure that dentistry is integrated not only across the Health Sciences Center campus, but across the entire OU academic community.”

Brazilian Dentist Conducting Fulbright Fellowship at the College Delayed but not stopped by the pandemic, a dentist from Brazil is conducting a Fulbright research fellowship at the college, where he’s investigating novel nanofilled tooth-bleaching agents – one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in dental offices – with the aim of developing and characterizing novel materials that do not compromise the tooth structure.

Dr. Matheus Kury Rodrigues, D.D.S., M.S., was one of only 26 Brazilian Ph.D. candidates from that country granted a Fulbright Award to study in the United States in 2020.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored through the U.S. government. Designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries, the program provides participants (chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential) the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. Currently, the Fulbright Program operates in more than 160 countries worldwide. Since its inception in 1946, over 400,000 “Fulbrighters” have participated in the program.

“The Division of Dental Biomaterials is very proud to have such a strong collaboration with the Department of Dental Materials from the State University of Campinas School of Dentistry at Piracicaba, Brazil,” said Division Head of Dental Biomaterials Fernando Esteban Florez, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D. “During his visit, Dr. Kury will be working on the synthesis, characterization and testing of experimental dental bleaching agents containing bioactive metaloxide nanoparticles developed by Dr. Sharukh Khajotia [associate dean for research and innovation at the college] and myself. A native of Porto Alegre, the southernmost state capital city of Brazil, Dr. Kury earned his doctorate

in dental surgery from the Rio Grande do Sul Federal University in 2016. He earned his master’s degree in dental clinics, with an emphasis in operative dentistry, from the State University of Campinas Piracicaba Dental School (known as UNICAMP) in Brazil during 2019. While pursuing his doctorate, Dr. Kury was awarded a Science Without Borders scholarship from the Brazilian government to study at the University of Sydney, Australia, for a year and a half. He practiced for almost a year as a dentist before deciding to pursue his doctoral degree at UNICAMP in 2019. In 2019, Dr. Kury made his first visit to the college.

Since Fulbrighters are expected to engage with public healthrelated issues that require innovation, creativity and knowledge, there is no doubt that this is going to be a once-ina-lifetime opportunity and that I found at OU, which is a remarkable place to fulfill my goals.”

College Hosts Collaborative Research Fellow Born and raised in the small town of Piracicaba in São Paulo State, Mayara Zaghi Dal Picolo, D.D.S., M.S., did not let the pandemic stop her from a dream of pursuing a collaborative research project with the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.

Before Dr. Zaghi began her journey in research, she earned her doctor of dental surgery degree in 2015 at Piracicaba School of Dentistry (FOP-UNICAMP), where she discovered her passion for research. Upon graduation, she went on to complete a master’s program in restorative dentistry. It was during that time she opened up her private practice while still finishing up her master’s.

In 2017, Dr. Zaghi began a Ph.D. program under Dr. Vanessa Cavalli (mentor) and Dr. Marcelo Giannini (co-mentor) and was introduced to several techniques in materials science, oral microbiology and cell culture. Studying these new techniques gave Dr. Zaghi an interest in novel ceramic materials and their interaction with oral microorganisms and human cells. She presented her research results at national and international conferences such as International

Academy for Adhesive Dentistry and the International Association for Dental Research.

At one of her presentations, Dr. Zaghi was introduced to the OU College of Dentistry through Fernando Luis Esteban Florez, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., division head of dental biomaterials, and Sharukh Khajotia, B.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., associate dean for research and innovation. In 2019, her research group came to Oklahoma to visit the college.

During this time, she learned about the possibility of a collaborative research project to develop and characterize novel nanofilled dental glazes with long-term and nonleaching antibacterial properties.

Upon her return to Brazil, Dr. Zaghi and her mentor, Dr. Cavalli began working on a research project to determine the effects of the incorporation of titanium dioxide nanotubes on the biological, mechanical and esthetic properties of commercially available ceramic glazes. They worked diligently to reduce the viability of oral microorganisms. Still, they ultimately felt that a collaboration with the college would help the research group to develop experimental glazes with fully functional metaloxide nanoparticles.

To collaborate, Dr. Zaghi had to participate in a six-month research-intensive doctorate sandwich scholarship (PRINT program) from the Brazilian Federal Foundation for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education, to sponsor her collaborative research project with Dr. Esteban Florez.

Almost a year after her acceptance into the program in November 2020, Dr. Zaghi was granted a visa to enter the United States and came to the college in September 2021 to start her research.

“We are very happy that Dr. Zaghi has selected our laboratory to expand her training on the development and advanced characterization of novel biomaterials,” said Dr. Florez, division head of dental biomaterials. “Dr. Zaghi comes from a scientific powerhouse in Brazil and she has a strong background on dental ceramics, microbiology and cell biology. Her work is anticipated to provide fundamental

Scientific Day 2021 The 40th annual Scientific Day was held virtually on April 13, 2021. Scientific Day is an event where dental students, dental hygiene students, residents and graduate students present findings from their research projects or describe new and innovative clinical techniques.

More than 30 posters were presented and over $11,000 was awarded in prize money to students who participated in the poster presentations and the Ishmael Essay Contest. Winners can be seen below.

Dental Hygiene White Coat Ceremony On Aug. 20, 2021, the college hosted its annual White Coat Ceremony for members of the dental hygiene classes of 2022 and 2023. The ceremony was held at Nicholson Tower, located on the OU Health Sciences Center campus in Oklahoma City.

Student Organizations American Student Dental Association Even with the impact of COVID-19, the college’s American Student Dental Association remained active with many virtual events. They hosted a bingo night for ASDA members to log on, hang out and win some prizes! Treyon Grant also led the organization in a virtual paint night. The organization had students sign up, pick up their individually portioned paint supplies, then log on to paint together and interact from home.

Once restrictions began to lift, ASDA partnered with student council for an end-of-the-year bash. They invited various vendors, and had food provided at Scissortail Park. They were able to donate $800 to Good Shepherd Ministries from their fundraising events.

ASDA have already been active in recruiting new members from the first-year dental class and have held their annual Leadership Summit, which was very successful. At the Leadership Summit, participants heard from seven leading professionals about the importance of leadership in dentistry and how to better prepare themselves as leaders in the future.

The ASDA Miles for Smiles 5K event went virtual and is an annual fundraiser to raise money and awareness for Good Shepherd Ministries. Good Shepherd Ministries serves the Oklahoma City community by providing medical and dental care for those in need. For this virtual event, participants signed up, laced up, and ran a 5K on their favorite track or trail.

The ASDA National Leadership Conference was virtual and ASDA members could sign up for the three-day conference for educational offerings and networking opportunities. Throughout the conference there were three general sessions, six sponsored symposium sessions, and 20 breakout sessions.

The student organization was able to have their annual Loupes Fair in person for dental students and dental hygiene. This in an event that allows students an opportunity to try different loupes and lights from the different vendors, and purchase those products they like for clinic. The event was held in one of the clinics for students to experience loupes in a clinical setting.

The Pre-Dental Prep Day was held virtually. Students were able to log in and talk with current ASDA members about what dental school is like as well as getting tips and insights about the application process. It is a great opportunity for those pre-dental students who are wanting to get more information and make sure they are on the right career path.

Diversity Council

The Diversity Council is committed to promoting events and opportunities that will further the academic advancement and success of minority and underrepresented students at the college while weaving and enhancing cultural and diversity acceptance in the student body and breaking down stereotypes including, but not limited to, those those associated with race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion, etc. The main purpose of Diversity Council is to foster social justice and advocate for minority and underrepresented students, all while educating and learning to celebrate and accept each other for our differences. In this past year, the Diversity Council held multiple lunch and learns to celebrate cultural heritage months and holidays, including Native American Heritage Month, Lunar New Year, Dia De Los Muertos, Diwali, Black History Month, and Women's History Month. They

emphasize the importance of being able to communicate with minority patients and have taught our student members ASL (American Sign Language) to celebrate International Persons with Disabilities Day and Spanish for Hispanic Heritage Month. The Diversity Council gathered donation items for hundreds of Afghanistan refugees in Oklahoma and participated in oral health community service events.

National Student Research Group The aim of the National Student Research Group: Oklahoma Chapter is to increase awareness of the opportunities to participate in research at the college. They hold lunch and learns as well as virtual events to discuss research projects, expectations and time commitments of performing research, and possible outcomes of research projects at the college. Specifically, the National Student Research Group encourages student researchers to participate in research events like Scientific Day, which can better educate the dental community on current research areas.

Rural Dentistry Interest Group In July 2021, the Rural Dentistry Interest Group organized and hosted the first Rural Dentistry Resource Fair for dental students. This event involved 10 different clinics and organizations throughout the state with connections to rural communities, along with three private practice rural dentists. The goal of this event was to connect organizations with an opportunity to network with students, possibly being able to connect them with dental offices and clinics searching for associates, or to educate students about loan repayment programs. The hope was that by gathering so many organizations and resources together in one place, any student could receive education about why rural dentistry is important and how they can give back to rural communities with their profession.

Student Council Over the past year, Student Council had to get creative with how to engage students because of COVID-19 restrictions. In the beginning of 2021, they were able to provide Patagonia pullovers to every student at a heavily discounted price. In April 2021, Student Council was able to partner with ASDA to host the first in-person event since March of 2020. They hosted all students at Scissortail Park for a Spring Fair. Their were vendors, food from Fuzzy's Taco Shop and an open bar. The turnout was great and it was exciting to get everyone together again. Summer 2021 Student Council was also able to host the annual volleyball tournament, where the fourth-year dental student team took away the victory.

Staples Society Although there were limitations as to what they could accomplish throughout spring 2021 due to the pandemic, the students of Albert F. Staples Society were still able contribute to local communities throughout the semester.

They kicked off with a full day of volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, building a new home for a family in need. At the end of the semester, they hosted a school supply drive as well as a drive for feminine hygiene products to support a movement called the Period Packs Project. Staples Society hopes to continue hosting in-person service events during this next academic year!

Graduation Year: 2017 Dr. Tim McClain - D.D.S. Graduate Caleb Thomas McClain was welcomed into the world on Sept. 18, 2021 to be greeted by loving parents and siblings Maxwell, Jacob and Anna. Now to get him to love all things ‘Sooner’!

Graduates Several 1991 and 1992 graduates met in Sedona, Arizona, for some informal continuing education, spa time, and hiking in November 2021.

Dr. Steven Fooshee – D.D.S. Graduate After over 44 years of practicing dentistry, Dr. Steven Fooshee retired at the end of August 2021. He has transitioned to a mentoring and teaching position with Heartland Dental. Dr. Fooshee is teaching Laser Dentistry for both diode and all tissue lasers to both dentists and hygienists. The work load requires three to four days participation monthly. This leaves plenty of room in his schedule for outdoor activities and grandkids! He transferred his license to volunteer status and hope to continue to be of service.

Graduation Year: 1986 Dr. Dan Ward – D.D.S. Graduate Dr. Dan Ward had a career milestone, almost 1,500 dental implants placed since December 2015 (Root Form, full size). He has worked 35 years of full-time practice. Dr. Ward has five amazing grandchildren.

“Life Interrupted” How Oral Cancer Took My Brother

By Dr. Parul Dua Makkar In June 2019, my younger and only brother texted me a picture of a lesion on the lateral border of the left side of his tongue. I urged him to get a biopsy. After consultation with his oral surgeon, it was determined that the lesion was lichen planus and he was prescribed a steroid.

My brother, Dr. Manu Dua, was also a dentist. He practiced in his thriving start-up in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He thought, “I am young and healthy with no history of smoking. I don’t have any predisposing conditions for cancer.” At age 33, he was in the prime of his life.

Manu eventually did get a biopsy in July 2019, after his symptoms began to worsen and caused him pain. By that time, the lesion was diagnosed and classified as Stage 2 Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

In August 2019 he had a major 8-hour surgery, where half of his tongue was resected and had lymph nodes removed from the left side of his neck. He didn’t receive any chemo/radiation treatment.

In the following months, Manu had to learn how to talk again, practice swallowing, and learn to use his left hand again. However, he vowed to turn this experience into a positive one, inspiring people with a similar diagnosis, and encouraging others to live their lives to the fullest by sharing his journey in DentalTown. Manu was featured in several articles, blogs and podcasts, and he began writing a book.

Unfortunately, Manu’s cancer reappeared in April 2020 as the world began to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic. He had another surgery, followed by chemo and radiation in June 2020 amidst his 34th birthday. Due to COVID restriction, Manu braved these treatments alone and had limited contact with friends and family.

He sold his practice to focus on his health. He started to check off items on his bucket list. This is when he decided to write reflecting on life as he faced his own mortality. His writings are now a book, Life Interrupted, Dr Dua’s Survival Guide.

By November, the cancer was very aggressive spreading to his lungs and bones and deemed inoperable. I visited him in December 2020, flying from New York to Calgary with special clearance from the Canadian government as borders were closed.

In the next months were very taxing on our family. As he went into hospice, I had to say goodbye via a video call, telling him it’s okay to let go. On March 14, 2021, Dr. Manu Dua passed away with our parents by his side. He was only 34.

Parul Dua Makkar, D.D.S., is an OU College of Dentistry alum. She graduated in 2003. In 2006, she moved to New York to complete a general practice residency at Staten Island University Hospital.

She currently owns and operates a successful private practice in Long Island, where she lives with her husband and two sons. She has devoted her life to sharing her brother’s story and educating dental and medical professionals alike about the warning signs of oral cancer.

“Our lives will come and go, but our ideas will remain immortal, and therefore in essence the soul behind our work remains eternal.

So, seek not to fear your own mortality, but rather embrace the challenge to create something that will outlive your fears and wildest imaginations, such that you may be able to provide service years after you have dearly departed. Live with the strength that not only is not impossible, but quite tangible if we can simply let go of fears that will not serve us any purpose in this life or the next.”

In Memoriam Ms. E. Jane Ammee Ms. E. Jane Amme passed away peacefully on July 9, 2021. Ms. Ammee attended the University of Iowa and graduated from the dental hygiene program in 1957.

Before starting her career at the college in 1976, she worked as a dental hygienist in Jacksonville, Florida. She served the college faithfully and retired as professor emeritus in 2007. She could not stay in retirement for long and quickly came back to the college as a part-time faculty member and officially retired in 2017. Ms. Amme will be remembered as a beloved faculty member who left a mark on all of those that she mentored in her career, including those in periodontics.

Mark Andregg, D.D.S. Mark Andregg, D.D.S., along with his beloved wife and son, passed away on April, 23, 2021 in a plane crash. He was born in Hays, Kansas, on Sept. 7, 1965.

Dr. Andregg was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and later went on to the University of Missouri-Kansas City to earn his dental degree and then Northwestern University in Chicago to receive his orthodontic degree. He was an outstanding orthodontist in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Him and his family are greatly missed by those who knew them.

Dr. Ramiz Cohlmia Sr. Ramiz “Ray” Cohlmia, D.D.S., passed away peacefully on April 28, 2021. He was born July 13, 1929 in Gate, Oklahoma. From 1951 to 1953, Dr. Cohlmia served as a corporal in the U.S. Army. After serving in the Army, he attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University and later graduated from Baylor Dental School in 1959.

Dr. Cohlmia moved to Oklahoma City, where he started his private practice and retired at the age of 87. He was married to the love of his life, Sameera Shadid, for 62 years. Dr. Cohlmia was an active member in the dental community, serving on multiple different societies and associations.

William Croom, D.D.S. On Dec. 25, 2021, we lost a beloved faculty member, William Croom, D.D.S. Dr. Croom, a clinical professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, was a highly respected faculty member of the OU College of Dentistry. He joined the college in 2009 after 37 years in private practice. A kind, compassionate, and gentle soul, he was much loved by the faculty, staff, students and residents who were fortunate to work with him over during his seven years at the school.

Dr. Steve Sullivan, chair of the Department of Surgical Sciences, described Dr. Croom as a “consummate professional and gentleman. He loved his family, his profession… and the students he had the pleasure of teaching. He was a great friend who will be genuinely missed.”

Donald Welk, D.D.S. Donald Welk, D.D.S., passed away on Jan. 7, 2022. Dr. Welk was a founding faculty member of the OU College of Dentistry, joining the faculty on Feb. 1, 1971. During his tenure, he served as chair of Restorative Dentistry. He retired on Feb. 1, 2001, at which time he was granted the honorable title of professor emeritus. For many years after his retirement, Dr. Welk continued to work as a dentist with the Indian Health Service in Talihina, Oklahoma.

Upon hearing of his passing, Dean Emeritus Stephen Young said, “He was instrumental in developing the college’s curriculum and establishing a culture of excellence. He also played a major role in recruiting amazing faculty. Dr. Welk was also known to be a highly talented dentist, a well-respected colleague and faculty member, and a friend to many. He will be missed by all who knew him!”
