Remembering A Legacy An In-Depth Look at the Life of Joseph Dean Robertson, D.D.S.

If I were to ask you about this date in history, June 21, 1917, most of you would not have any recollection of any importance in history. However, this date happens to be very important in the history of the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.

This date is the day that Joseph Dean Robertson, D.D.S., was born. He later became the state of Oklahoma’s first pediatric dentist, holding license No. 1. Dr. Robertson practiced pediatric dentistry in Oklahoma City for 63 years. He was one of our college’s namesake founders, and an individual who taught many of our students the most important value of our profession: the patients we serve. Dr. Robertson completed his task on this earth and recently passed away at 101 years old. His mark on dentistry is insurmountable.

Back in the late-eighties, Dean Russell Stratton established a vision to better increase relationships between the college and dentists practicing in the private sector. He stated that there are values we can learn from one other: private practitioners learning from the educational side of dentistry, and the educational institution learning from practitioners outside the college. He believed this would strengthen our graduates’ desire for lifelong learning and provide a better understanding of our professional responsibility to those we serve.

Furthermore, with input from the faculty, Dean Stratton noted the college was in need of private support to fund research, student scholarships and other “fill in the gap” needs for the college. Ultimately, the goal was to ensure we, as a profession, are constantly reminded the values of caring and compassion.

The Influence of One…

Hence, in 1988 an annual giving society for the college was formed: the J. Dean Robertson Society. To date, the foundation has raised more than $6.5 million and provided much support in the areas of scholarships for dental and dental hygiene students, student externship support, student research projects, clinical support and academic support. It also supported equipment, technology and building upgrades, and launched the Legacy Project. As you recall, the Legacy Project was an all-encompassing project that made changes to our curriculum, physical building operations and patient care format.

As I sat at Dr. Robertson’s funeral service and listened to Reverend Spindle’s meditation, “How Sweet It Is,” I was reminded of Dr. Robertson’s incredible character and his teachings, and how the J. Dean Robertson Society is reflective of those values today. The areas the J. Dean Robertson Society supports through your generosity are a reflection of the values he promoted throughout his life. All from the teachings and behavior of this incredible man whose legacy taught us to live and give from our hearts.

The college just celebrated the 30th anniversary of the J. Dean Robertson Society and is dedicated to ensuring Dr. Robertson’s legacy for years to come.

I hope we can continue to count on your support of the J. Dean Robertson Society; in truth, we can’t make do without your support.

Not too long ago, I had lunch with Dr. Robertson and recall when he said, “Raymond, it is our profession’s responsibility to take care of those in need, from our students to the people we take care of. I hope that the [JDR] society continues to render great service to all.”

Actually, as I think back now, in all honesty, we couldn’t be who we are without the blessing of you, Dr. Robertson.

Dr. Robertson, your legacy will live on.

Another great year has come and gone at the OU College of Dentistry!

The class of 2018 and 2019 have graduated and the new class of dental and dental hygiene students are ending their first year. It is amazing how fast the time flies. I almost miss all those lectures in room 108, almost.

Let me introduce myself, I am Nathan Brown. I was in the OU College of Dentistry graduating class of 2007. Although my career as a dentist began then, I have always been around the field. My dad, S. Kelly Brown, was in the very first class in 1976 and, in turn, dentistry has become my passion as well. Since graduation, I have been on multiple Oklahoma Dental Association boards, the J. Dean Robertson Society Board of Trustees, and a member of the Alumni Association since 2011. I have served as vice president of the Alumni Association Board for the past few years and was just recently named as president. I look forward to this new chapter to serve and support the association and the OU College of Dentistry.

Last year’s Alumni Weekend was a great time to see old friends, classmates and faculty.

On Friday, the Shillingburg clinic, honoring Herbert T. Shillingburg, D.D.S., was dedicated.

A true legend in dentistry, his name will be displayed on the wall for generations to come.

That night at the Dean’s Circle Dinner, the Alumni Awards were presented and new Dean’s Circle members were honored. The following morning, alumni, students, faculty and family continued a Saturday tradition by tailgating prior to kickoff of the OU v. UCLA game. Be sure to look for stories about each of these events in the following pages.

Last year, more than $220,000 in scholarships was awarded to dental and dental hygiene students. Of those scholarships, $80,000 was awarded by the J. Dean Robertson Society.

As you know, your gifts each year to the J. Dean Robertson Society support student scholarships. In addition, gifts to the J.D.R. Society also fund indigent care, student externships, research projects and tutoring, and helped fund the renovation of classrooms 104 and 108.

There is still time to make a gift for this fiscal year. Please contact Megan Louk, Director of Development, before June 30 to make your contribution. Every gift makes a significant impact.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the J. Dean Robertson Society. There have already been several new and exciting changes, and there is even more to come! Be on the lookout for more communication this summer about our revamped Alumni Reunion Weekend. But please go ahead and save the date: Sept. 27 and 28.

ALUMNI // CLINIC DEDICATION

College Dedicates Dr. Herbert T. Shillingburg, Jr. Clinic Alumni Weekend 2018 began on Sept. 7 with the dedication of the formerly known “Blue Clinic” to become what is now known as the “Dr. Herbert T. Shillingburg, Jr. Clinic” The college had the pleasure of welcoming friends, family, former students and colleagues of Dr. Shillingburg to reminisce on his many accomplishments and their memories of him.

“What an honor it was to have Dr. Shillingburg as a teacher, a mentor and a friend,” said Dr. Raymond A. Cohlmia, dean of the OU College of Dentistry, addressing the audience. “Each of you are here today to celebrate Dr. Shillingburg because in some way, he made an impact on your life. As I look out on this crowd, I see a piece of him in each and every one of you. This is not only a testimony to him, but proves to me that his legacy will continue to live on here at the college.”

During the dedication, guests were asked to come up and share their favorite stories about Dr. Shillingburg or speak to his character. Dr. Shillingburg was described by many as “no ordinary faculty member”.

Susan E. Brackett, D.D.S., Class of 1978, was one of Dr. Shillingburg’s former students and colleagues. She recalled how Dr. Shillingburg was quick-witted and notorious for both his dry sense of humor and work ethic. He was also known for his demand of perfection, both of himself and his students.

“My one hope is that naming this clinic after Dr. Shillingburg will encourage our current and future students to learn something about the man and emulate his character,” Dr. Brackett said. “Herb appreciated those individuals with incredible natural talent and ability, but he identified with those students who are not naturally gifted. He respected those students who cared enough about their

patients to work hard, be meticulous and ethical in the treatment they render — What you might call the Shillingburg gold standard of patient care.”

In 1972, after the college was founded, Dr. Shillingburg was recruited as the chair of the Department of Fixed Prosthodontics, a position he held until his retirement in 2003.

Dr. Shillingburg was the author of five textbooks, including the well-known Fundamentals of Fixed Prosthodontics. First published in 1976, this textbook was required curriculum for 70% of the dental schools in North America. Fundamentals of Fixed Prosthodontics sold more than 80,000 copies and was translated in to seven different languages for international distribution. Known around the world, Dr. Shillingburg presented more than 280 lectures across the United States and abroad.

Dr. Shillingburg passed away July 15, 2015. Shortly thereafter, the College of Dentistry announced its plans to honor Dr. Shillingburg with the naming of this clinic.

“With Herb’s passing we have witnessed the end of an era. There will never be any more ‘crown and bridge men,’ certainly not to the caliber of Herb Shillingburg. But his legacy will live on in those of us he influenced as ‘the man who wrote THE book.’”

DEAN’S CIRCLE DINNER

On Sept. 7, more than 150 Dean’s Circle members, faculty, alumni and students attended the Dean’s Circle Dinner and Alumni Awards held at the Montellano Event Center in Oklahoma City. Six new Dean’s Circle members were recognized, as well as 11 Dean’s Circle Silver and three Dean’s Circle Gold members.

The night started with a cocktail hour, during which Dean’s Circle members and honorees had the chance to catch up with old classmates and current students while listening to a string quartet. Later, Dean Raymond A. Cohlmia presented the following alumni awards: Young Dental Hygiene Alumna of the Year, Dental Hygiene Alumna of the Year, Young Dental Alumna of the Year, Dental Alumnus of the Year, and the Stephen K. Young Distinguished Service Award.

Upon the arrival of her first child in 2013, she began working as a dental assisting educator at Community Care College.

Later, she returned to clinical work with Drs. Beena and Tej Ladd, before beginning a career in a periodontal specialty practice.

It was at Tulsa Dental Implants and Periodontics that Ms. Walk realized the full potential of a career in dental hygiene. She discovered she was not just a scientist and a clinician, but she was also an educator, a philanthropist and patient advocate of dental care. Ms. Walk was excited and motivated to be all of those things, as she and Dr. Trung Tran created their research-based hygiene program.

She became certified in laser therapy and was one of the first hygienists to use subginigival air polishing technology in Tulsa.

She and her team at Tulsa Dental Implants and Periodontics serve the community as a part of their vision and values at Oklahoma Mission of Mercy, Catholic Charities, James Mission, Day Center for The Homeless, Nightlight of Tulsa and Flights for Life.

In addition, Ms. Walk served as the Tulsa County Dental Hygiene Society President from 2014 to 2015.

She published a testimonial in Dental Products Report Magazine in 2016.

She continues to work as a dental hygienist and professional relationship director at Tulsa Dental Implants and Periodontics.

She organizes the Tulsa Dental Hygiene Symposium and the Canady Spear Study Club.

She has been happily married to Kevin Walk for nearly five years and has been blessed with two boys, Carter and Parker, ages 5 and 2.

From a very young age, Ms. Stacy Walk knew she wanted to pursue a career in dentistry. In the eighth grade, she started shadowing her local family practitioner and hygienist.

In her junior and senior years of high school, she completed a dental assisting program, and started working for Drs. Jeff and Mary Parker while completing prerequisite classes before she applied to dental hygiene school.

In 2011, Ms. Walk graduated with a bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene from the OU College of Dentistry’s Broken Arrow campus. That summer, she began her first job as a dental hygienist at Dentistry by Design in Tulsa.

She would like to give credit to her employer, Dr. Tran, because without him she would not have the opportunity to become the leader she is today.

Ms. Walk would also like to give credit to Drs. Jeff Parker, Mary Parker and James Kessler and hygienists Amy King and Debbie Batson, all of whom had a very positive impact on her journey to becoming a dental hygienist.

In recognition of her dedication to the dental hygiene profession, the Alumni Association honored Ms. Stacy Walk as the 2018 Young Dental Hygiene Alumna of the Year.

Ms. Sherrie Brown graduated with a bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in 1978. She immediately began practicing hygiene, and has had a distinguished resume throughout her tenure.

In 1991, Ms. Brown was one of the three full-time founding faculty members of the dental hygiene program at the Tulsa Junior College, now Tulsa Community College.

It was around this same time that she started her own consulting business, Sherrie Brown Consulting. The original plan was to consult part time in the summers. In 1997, she made the decision to focus her efforts full time as a consultant.

She teaches in-office courses such as Infection Control; Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office; CPR; Ethics; HIPAA; Perio Management and Street Drugs and Their Effect on the Dentition; among others.

She proudly serves the profession as a member of the American Dental Hygiene Association, the Oklahoma Dental Hygiene Association and the Tulsa County Dental Hygiene Association. She also is a member of the Office Sterilization and Asepsis Procedures, and is a St. Jude Partner in Hope.

Furthermore, she regularly donates her time and talents to the Samaritan House Community Clinic Dental Services.

Earlier this year, she received the Dr. James S. Torchia Award in recognition of her dedication to the dental profession.

Ms. Brown says she has been immensely blessed to have so many friends and clients in the dental community. Her love of the dental profession is evident in the way in which she has dedicated her life and career to her clients.

In recognition of this, and her enormous contribution to the dental hygiene profession, the Alumni Association honored Ms. Sherrie L. Brown as the 2018 Dental Hygiene Alumna of the Year.

Dr. Blaire Bowers grew up in Shawnee. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma, and went on to earn her doctor of dental surgery from the OU College of Dentistry in 2010.

Upon graduating dental school, Dr. Bowers completed a general practice residency at the University of Colorado, Denver. She then returned to her “Sooner born and Sooner bred� roots to enroll in the graduate periodontics program at the OU College of Dentistry.

During her time at the OU College of Dentistry, Dr. Bowers was highly involved in both college and campus activities and organizations.

She served as president of the Student Government Association for the 2013-2014 academic year. She also participated in Leadership HSC and was a student adviser from 2012 to 2014.

Most notably, Dr. Bowers was named Outstanding Graduate Student for the entire Health Sciences Center campus in 2014, the year she graduated.

Upon completing her master of science degree in periodontics, she went to work full time for Dr. Jacob Hager at the Periodontal Implant Center.

It was around that same time that she started Shawnee Periodontics and Dental Implants in her hometown.

In August 2015, she opened the Periodontal Implant Center North office in Edmond.

Dr. Bowers has been active in the Oklahoma Dental Association and completed the ODA Leadership Academy in 2017. She has also had several roles on the Oklahoma Dental Society Board, including vice president and president-elect; she currently serves as president.

In addition, Dr. Bowers is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Periodontology and the Southwest Society of Periodontics. She also participates in various study clubs.

Dr. Bowers also regularly volunteers her time and talents to the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy and Dentistry from the Heart.

For her outstanding contributions to the advancement of the dental profession and her commitment to community service, the Alumni Association honored Dr. Blaire Bowers as the 2018 Young Dental Alumna of the Year.

He then entered the advanced education in general dentistry residency at the OU College of Dentistry, and received a certificate of completion in June 1996.

Dr. Bridges is active in many professional dental organizations, including the American Dental Association, the American Academy of General Dentistry, the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the Oklahoma Dental Association, the Southwest District Dental Society and the Comanche County Dental Society.

Dr. Bridges is a past president of the Oklahoma Dental Association, the Southwest District Dental Society and the Comanche County Dental Society.

In 2002, Dr. Bridges was presented with the Oklahoma Dental Association’s Distinguished Presidents Leadership Award for outstanding service and leadership to the association. He has served two terms for the OU College of Dentistry’s Admissions Committee and is serving this fall in a part-time role as needed for the College.

Dr. Bridges is especially proud of his affiliation with Dentists for the Disabled and Elderly in Need of Treatment.

Furthermore, he is a founding member of the Calvary Free Dental Clinic. This clinic provides free dental care to the indigent population of southwest Oklahoma.

C. Todd Bridges, D.D.S.

In addition, Dr. Bridges was the co-chair of the Lawton 2014, Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OKMOM). He continues to lead the Presenter: Raymond A. Cohlmia, D.D.S., Dean removable prosthodontic department for OKMOM each year.

Dr. Todd Bridges is a Lawton native. He earned his undergraduate degree from Cameron University, where he was a Presidential Leader and University Scholar. He went on to earn his doctor of dental surgery degree from the OU College of Dentistry in 1995.

Dr. Bridges is also very active in the local community. He is a member and deacon of Northwest Church of Christ, and is the coordinator for the Back to the Bible Campaign, a weeklong mission that has been ongoing for 43 years.

He is a current trustee and treasurer of the McMahon Foundation, which provides philanthropic dollars to the Lawton/Fort Sill community and the southwest Oklahoma region.

For his outstanding contributions to the advancement of professional dentistry, and in recognition of his loyal commitment to community service, the Alumni Association honored Dr. Todd Bridges as the 2018 Dental Alumnus of the Year.

DR. STEPHEN K. YOUNG DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWA R D

Kathryn F. Miller, R.D.H., M.Ed. Presenter: Stephen K. Young, D.D.S.

For the past 30 years, Dean Kathyrn Miller has loyally served the OU College of Dentistry, its students and the entire dental profession.

Upon earning her bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene from the OU College of Dentistry in 1983, she spent the next four years working as a dental hygienist in private practice. In 1987, she began her career in education as a professor in the dental hygiene program at her alma mater.

In 2000, she began teaching implantology and pediatric dentistry to both dental and dental hygiene students. In 2009, she was named director of clinics, and in 2015, she was named assistant dean for quality assurance and compliance, a role she holds to this day.

She has been a member of the American Dental Hygiene Association since her graduation and served as a delegate several times. She also served as the ADHA Liaison for the Oral Health Institute.

She has held many roles at both the county and state level, including president of both the Oklahoma County Dental Hygienists’ Society and the Oklahoma Dental Hygienists’ Association.

Furthermore, she served as an ODHA parliamentarian for more than 10 years.

In addition, she has served as secretary for the Beta Delta Chapter of the Sigma Phi Alpha National Dental Hygiene Honor Society for nearly 15 years. She is also a longtime member of the American Dental Education Association.

Throughout her career, Dean Miller has been recognized with various honors and awards, including Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Award in 1992 and 1997, and both the Outstanding Faculty Award and Outstanding Professorial Achievement Award in 2005.

In 2007, she was awarded the ADEA/Zimmerman Dental Implant Education Award. And in 2008, she was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student in Professional Health Occupations Award.

In 2012, the OU College of Dentistry Alumni Association honored her with the Dental Hygiene Alumna of the Year award. And in 2014, she was honored with the Dean’s Service Award.

She was recognized earlier this year by the College of Dentistry with a 30 Year Service award.

Dean Miller is known for giving back to the community. Each year, she eagerly provides dental care at National Guard Service Days and at Oklahoma Mission of Mercy. She participates in Special Olympics Special Smiles, and loves to volunteer at the college’s annual Kids’ Day. In addition, she is very active in her church and participates in various community service projects.

In recognition of her service to the OU College of Dentistry and the profession of dentistry, the Alumni Association honored Dean Kathryn Miller with the 2018 Dr. Stephen K. Young Distinguished Service Award.

On Sept. 8, alumni, faculty and friends of the OU College of Dentistry gathered for a tailgate celebration prior to the University of California, Los Angeles, football game at the Conoco Leadership Courtyard of Oklahoma Memorial Union in Norman.

Early last summer, a group of young alumni gathered at the Renaissance Waterford Hotel in Oklahoma City to celebrate both the dental and dental hygiene classes of 2018. That evening, Dr. Shannon Griffin, Oklahoma Dental Association president, presented a continuing education course about practice management. Following the course, a reception was held in which faculty, students and alumni committee members joined the group as they reflected upon fond memories at the OU College of Dentistry.

Foundation of Success This summer, I had the opportunity to visit with Dr. William E. Brown, founding dean of the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, or as everyone called him, Bill Brown, and ask him what it was like starting a new dental school. Bill lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with his dog, Faye, and turned 96 this past August. During our conversation, he sounded like, and was as sharp as, the dean who hired me 42 years ago. Since he retired in 1987, with less than one-third of OU dental and dental hygiene graduates ever knowing him, I suggested to Dean Cohlmia that we should do a story on Dean Brown and his story about founding the college.

Before the OU College of Dentistry

Dean Brown grew up in Benton Harbor, Michigan, where his father was a practicing dentist. In 1945, Bill earned his doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Briefly after, he joined his father in his dental practice, eventually returning to the University of Michigan School of Dentistry for specialty training in pediatric dentistry. After completing his specialty training, he practiced pediatric dentistry in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for 15 years and served on the faculty in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. He attained the rank of full professor in 1961 and transitioned to a full-time faculty member in 1962. He also served as associate dean for graduate and post-graduate dentistry. Concurrent with his leadership role in dental education, he became very involved in organized dentistry and served as president of the Michigan Dental Association, the American Society of Dentistry for Children and the American Academy of Pedodontics.

The Move to Oklahoma

In 1969, the Oklahoma Legislature approved a bill to establish a dental school in Oklahoma. At the 1968 American Dental Association meeting, Dr. Larson Keso, chair of the search committee (currently a part-time faculty member in the OU Department of Orthodontics), and several committee members met with several dean candidates, including Dr. Bill Brown. Following that meeting, Dr. Brown was one of four candidates invited to tour the campus in Oklahoma City.

Bill said the excitement of starting a new school and the earmarked financial support from the HERO Bond program for a new building were critical in his decision to apply for deanship. After two more trips to Oklahoma, meeting with the search committee members and university leadership, he was named dean in 1969 by then OU president J. Herbert Holloman. At the March 17, 1969, meeting, the regents of the University of Oklahoma announced Brown’s appointment, effective Aug. 1, 1969.

There were many challenges in starting the new school, especially with the unexpected death of his wife a week before they were to

move. With his wife suddenly gone, Bill came to Oklahoma alone with the task of developing a curriculum and designing a new dental facility. In the summer of 1969, Bill moved to Oklahoma City and settled into the first home of the OU College of Dentistry, a house on NE 14th Street. During the next couple of years, plans progressed for establishing a dental hygiene and dental program.

The College of Dentistry Begins to Take Shape

The Oklahoma dental program was a great challenge starting from scratch but had great potential. Because there was no history to follow, there were no traditions to contend with or expectations to meet; it was essentially a blank canvas. This allowed for a good deal of creative freedom. The mission of the college established under Dean Brown’s tenure was to educate and train dentists to provide for the clinical needs of Oklahomans, and that mission has not changed since the school was founded.

Bill had some serious work to do before the first class could convene, including designing a curriculum, articulating the architectural specifications for new buildings and finding a temporary facility for the clinical program until permanent facilities could be completed.

But one of his biggest trials was hiring quality faculty who would educate students to provide high-quality clinical care in a wide range of disciplines. At that time in Oklahoma, the number of dental specialists was few, and this was especially true in rural areas. Also, many prospective faculty candidates knew nothing about Oklahoma, except for the tornados (he tried not to recruit in the spring).

Although it posed as a challenge, Bill was very successful in hiring a high-quality faculty. The first faculty member hired was Albert F. Staples, a former associate professor of oral surgery at Baylor University College of Dentistry. Other prominent dental faculty included Drs. Herbert Shillingburg, Earl Collard, Don Welk, Dick Mathewson, Ram Nanda, Dean Johnson, Richard Reynolds, Tom Glass, Frank Miranda, Stewart Shaprio, Manville Duncanson and Don L. Whisett. Many of them were young and had Michigan ties because of Dr. Brown’s Michigan affiliation. In fact, OU at times was referred to as Michigan South. This group of founding faculty had a profound impact on dental education and published textbooks on fixed prosthodontics, removable prosthodontics and pediatric dentistry that were used throughout the world. But one thing they all had in common was taking on the challenge of creating a new clinical model, in which they succeeded.

Brown quickly spelled out his vision for an OU dental education, which included two nontraditional approaches. One, students would be exposed to patients in their first year of school to effectively marry scientific education with the real world instead of the traditional third year. Secondly, he wanted a clinical curriculum to put OU on the map, a model other schools later followed.

The first program to be initiated was the two-year Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program. The dental hygiene program took its first class in 1972 and was composed of 16 students. The

construction of the new dental facility was only in its infancy, so the dental hygiene program was located in a house next to the OU College of Dentistry offices on NE 14th Street. That house served as the program’s classroom and clinical facility from 1971-1975.

The dental hygiene program graduated its first class in 1974 under the leadership of Sharon Barton, chair of the Dental Hygiene Department.

The first dental class, composed of 24 students, was admitted in 1972. Classes and laboratories were held on the third floor of the Basic Sciences Education Building, adjacent to the current building.

An interim clinical building was constructed where the current parking structure sits on Stonewall Avenue. The facility was used until the current building was completed in 1976, which was also the year the first dental class graduated.

Dental education programs are always one of the most expensive educational programs at any university, so budgets are always a concern. Bill said that the funding in the 1970s was very good for education, and in the 1980s, it was the opposite. With the oil burst, state funding was reduced, and has continued to this day.

The cost of the new dental building was $11 million, which is one-tenth of the cost of what a new dental school would cost today, and took three years to complete. One question Bill was frequently asked during his time as dean, and a question that is still asked today, was if the school was intentionally designed to resemble a molar tooth. To my surprise, Bill said no, it was the internal design based on the location of the clinical modules, which accidentally resulted in the molar-like, outside appearance of the building.

One change in dental education noted by Dr. Brown since his time as dean has been the increase in female applicants and students.

There were no female students in the first OU dental class and only one in the second dental graduating class. Today, 50 percent of dental students are women.

One disappointment during his tenure of dean was his inability to build a stronger research program. Like today, research funding was very tight and funding was focused on a few dental schools, so his focus was on clinical education.

Closure of the School

One of the most significant events impacting the OU College of Dentistry occurred in January 1987 when Gov. Henry Bellmon announced during his State of the State address that he wanted to close the OU College of Dentistry. Shock is the only word to describe the reaction of faculty, students, staff and university officials. There had been no warning, and to this day, no verified explanation as to what prompted Gov. Bellmon to make that decision. One explanation put forth was the concern of the dental community that the college was educating too many dentists, which was having a negative impact on the financial condition of their practices. Also, during this period of time, seven dental schools across the United States had closed for a variety of reasons, but all had some financial component associated with them. As a result of the hard work of Dean Brown, the college faculty, staff, students, university administration, key legislators and dental leaders, the college was victorious. Bill said many lessons were learned from that experience, but a critical one is the need to continually get the message out about the positive impact the college has on Oklahomans through patient care and education, and the need to maintain a strong relationship with the practicing dental community.

The End of an Era

At the end of 1987, Bill decided to retire as founding dean after serving 18 years in that position. In retirement, Bill volunteered with the Oklahoma City Red Cross and played a significant role with the organization during the Murrah Bombing in 1995. After the passing of his second wife, he moved back to Ann Arbor, where one of his children, Wendy Kerschbaum, was director of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry dental hygiene program. The legacy of excellence and innovation in dental education that Bill established at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry lives on. Faculty, staff, students and patients have all benefited from Dean Brown’s efforts and continue to build upon this foundation of high-quality education.

Remembering a Legacy What words do you use to describe a legend?

In the case of Joseph Dean Robertson, D.D.S., the words follow a theme that reveals how deeply meaningful he was to all who knew him.

A true gentleman. An incredible role model. A genuine professional. A mentor extraordinaire. A consummate learner. Everyone’s favorite grandfather. A person who made you feel like he had been waiting his whole life just to talk to you.

Dr. Robertson, Oklahoma’s first licensed pediatric dentist, died on Feb. 5, at the age of 101. His influence on the field of dentistry, the OU College of Dentistry and the people he encountered in a century’s worth of living cannot be overstated.

the best for children. But he didn’t hammer us as students. He had a way of getting us to do our very best. When we worked with him, we wanted to do our best for him.”

Dr. Robertson taught the knowledge and skills of dentistry, but he also imparted something even more important: making patients feel at ease and appreciated. Few people could do that as well as Dr. Robertson did.

A Professional for Life

In 1947, Dr. Robertson began his pediatric dentistry private practice in Oklahoma City after graduate training and four years with the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1964, he was joined in practice by his longtime colleague, Don Haskins, D.D.S. Dr. Robertson was a beloved dentist to children and families across central Oklahoma, but he also had a passion for education. In 1976, he joined the faculty of the OU College of Dentistry, where he inspired many students with his values and dedication to the field.

Several of those students are now College of Dentistry faculty members and administrators: Tim Fagan, D.D.S., chair of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry; Nanay Shadid, D.D.S., chair of the Division of Comprehensive Care; and Kevin Haney, D.D.S., assistant dean for academic and student affairs. All have worked extensively in pediatric dentistry and have drawn upon Dr. Robertson’s wisdom and guidance throughout their careers.

“He wanted to make sure dentistry always lived up to its best in terms of professionalism and care,” Dr. Haney said. “He had high expectations for our performance as students because he wanted

The clinic is where dental and dental hygiene students treat patients, learning how to perform services that range from cleanings and fillings to crowns and bridges. Dr. Shadid, who previously worked in private practice, primarily treating children, said she has never forgotten what Dr. Robertson taught her about patient care.

“He told me, ‘It’s all about voice control. The quieter and calmer you are, the better your patients will accept you.’ He was exactly right,” she said.

Because of an age requirement at the time, Dr. Robertson had to retire from academic dentistry when he reached age 70. But he didn’t stay in retirement long. In 1988, he rejoined his former private practice, where he continued to see patients and perform surgeries until he was just shy of his 93rd birthday.

Dr. Robertson believed that his patients were his for life, not just during their childhoods or when they lived in the area. As he told all who sought his advice, dentistry is less about technical skills and more about being a part of people’s lives.

“We learned from Dr. Robertson that the dentistry procedure is the easy part. Getting to that point is the hard part,” Dr. Cohlmia said. “I can tell you a hundred patient stories that have nothing to do with dentistry. We treat loneliness and fear and distress. Dr. Robertson taught us how to approach the patient – he taught us that compassion and kindness would get us to the point where we could perform the necessary procedure.”

Values That Changed a Profession

Perhaps the most visible evidence of Dr. Robertson’s influence on his profession was at his funeral. At 101 years old, he had outlived most, if not all, of his peers. Yet the church was packed with family, friends, former students and dentists from across Oklahoma and beyond.

“He did more for children’s dental health than anyone in the state has done or probably ever will do again,” Dr. Haney said. “Everyone respected Dr. Robertson, not just pediatric dentists. General dentists, dentists from other specialties … everyone knew him and what he did for the field.”

In 1948, just after he had established his own practice in Oklahoma, Dr. Robertson was one of eight dentists who formed what is now called the Southwestern Society of Pediatric Dentistry. He also served as president of the group, which was composed of members from seven southwestern states. Together they helped to advance the field.

Dr. Robertson was elected president of the Oklahoma Dental Association in 1968 and was honored as its Dentist of the Year in 1979. He also never quit learning himself. In 1978, he earned his master’s degree in education, graduating summa cum laude from the University of Central Oklahoma (then called Central State University).

“If one were looking for the model of an ideal dentist, one could stop with Dean Robertson,” Frank Miranda, D.D.S., a founding faculty member of the College of Dentistry, wrote in one of its magazines. “I found many reasons to add him to my small list of heroes: his consummate love of dentistry, his unwavering devotion to family, his consistently gentle nature, his skills as an educator, and his lifelong commitment to the service of others.”

Dr. Cohlmia said Dr. Robertson taught him there are three aspects of being a professional, and he has turned to them again and again during his career as a dentist and a college dean. The first is to be educated at a higher level than the general public. The second is to possess the ability to self-govern. The third is to advance the arts and sciences to people everywhere.

“I use those three values as a defining factor of who we are,” Dr. Cohlmia said. “When I’ve faced tough issues, I would often talk to Dr. Robertson, and he would say, ‘Let’s look at those three values again, Raymond. What do we need to do to continue with those values?’ Dr. Robertson always had the ability to bring me back to the foundation of the profession.”

A Legacy That Lives On

Even though he is gone, Dr. Robertson’s values will continue indefinitely.

Society, the college’s fundraising arm that was formed in 1988. The late ’80s were a difficult time for the College of Dentistry. Both the college and the state were experiencing financial woes, and there was serious talk about shutting down the college. Leaders knew they had to create a mechanism for attracting private donations.

Dr. J. Dean Robertson practiced dentistry for a total of 63 years in Oklahoma, a feat of longevity in itself.

He also contributed greatly to the field that he loved and was honored with many awards in return. Some of his civic contributions and achievements include:

• Honored by the College of Dentistry when it re named its comprehensive care clinic to the Dr. J. Dean Robertson Clinic

• Received the Regents’ Alumni Award from the University of Oklahoma

• Received the James A. Saddoris Lifetime

Achievement Award from the Oklahoma Dental Association

• Named Dentist of the Year by the Oklahoma Dental Association

• Received two Outstanding Clinical Teacher awards from the College of Dentistry

• Served as president of the Rotary Club of Oklahoma City

• Received the Lifetime Achievement Award and the “Heavy Lifting Award” from the Rotary Club

“Everyone agreed that the name for this new venture would be critical to its success,” Russ Stratton, D.D.S., the college’s dean at the time, wrote in a previous magazine. “To bring the school and the community closer together, and at the same time have the credibility to attract a broad base of support, we needed a name that would be highly regarded not only at the school, but by alumni and non-alumni dentists throughout the state. I don’t recall exactly who suggested Dean Robertson, but whoever it was couldn’t have come up with a more ideal name; no one in Oklahoma was more respected and loved than Dean.”

Gifts to the J. Dean Robertson Society have been used for a variety of college initiatives, including student scholarships, capital improvements, care for the underserved population, student research projects and externships, which allow students to provide dental care in rural communities around Oklahoma. Each project funded by the group is tied to a value that Dr. Robertson held, perhaps especially the dental care provided to Oklahomans of all ages who otherwise couldn’t afford treatment.

“Dr. Robertson always said that the secret to wealth was that you had to give it all away,” Dr. Cohlmia said. “His belief in taking care of your fellow man was fundamental.”

Dr. Robertson’s presence continues to be felt in the College of Dentistry’s admissions process. Dentistry is a top career right now – this year, the college had more than 1,700 applications for about 60 positions, Dr. Cohlmia said. Many potential students have high grade-point averages and admirable resumes, but that doesn’t guarantee admission. Rather, the college is looking for students who also understand the mission as lived by Dr. Robertson.

“We’re looking for students who understand they are taking care of their fellow man,” Dr. Cohlmia said. “Our students understand what it means to be a professional and not a dental student.” That bodes well for a college whose aim is to put patients first, and in the process improve their oral health.

Dr. Robertson was married to his wife, Juanita “Skippy” Lucille Anderson, for 70 years and they had four children.

Dr. Robertson was an avid swimmer, and among the many activities he and his wife enjoyed together was dancing. They were honored with a bench outside the dental school that is dedicated to their partnership and contributions.

“One of the keys to any successful dental practice is to be able to communicate with people,” said Stephen Young, D.D.S., former dean of the college. “Dr. Robertson was a communicator. He would put people at ease and make them feel good about themselves. We all want that. We love it when someone makes us feel good, and he made people feel good. It was never about him – it was always about you.”

J. Dean Robertson Society Established in 1988, the J. Dean Robertson Society is the OU College of Dentistry’s private annual giving fund, and is composed of alumni and friends who are dedicated to the advancement of excellence throughout the college. This annual campaign is among the largest fundraising efforts for the college.

The society is named in honor of Dr. Joseph Dean Robertson, a beloved pediatric dentist and former faculty member. Dr. Robertson was an icon within the Oklahoma dental community. Well-known and respected as a practitioner, Dr. Robertson was remembered as the quintessential professional. At the college, he was adored by faculty, students, administrators and alumni alike.

Gifts made to the J. Dean Robertson Society support student scholarships, student externships, student research projects, indigent care for patients and capital improvements, among others. Throughout its history, donors to the Society have given collectively more than $6.5 million.

September 2018 marked the 30th year of the J. Dean Robertson Society. In celebration of 30 years, the College developed a new, fresh logo for the J. Dean Robertson Society and created a commemorative 30-Year pin. The current 30-Year Campaign launched in September and will run through June 30, 2019. AT THE COLLEG E // NE W PROG R AM

Infants and toddlers from 1 to 3 years of age are now being scheduled in the OU College of Dentistry Pediatric Dental Clinic so that dental students gain hands-on experience and skills in examining, diagnosing and treating very young children. Under pediatric dentistry faculty supervision, dental students conduct oral health evaluations, provide preventive treatments, and counsel parents, providing them with infant/toddler oral health prevention strategies and education. Parents are taught how and when to effectively brush and floss their children’s teeth and are provided with a comprehensive caries prevention plan. In the event that the child has caries, the parent is provided with treatment options, such as applying fluoride varnish or silver diamine fluoride to the lesions with frequent re-evaluations to determine the effectiveness of the treatment and/or referring the child for definitive restorative care.

College Begins Infant Oral Health Program In the United States, dental caries is the most common chronic infectious disease of children—more than one in four children have caries before they start kindergarten.

Left untreated, caries in children can progress to toothaches and infections and may compromise a child’s health, development and quality of life. While dental caries is preventable, a recent national survey conducted on behalf of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry revealed that only 26 percent of U.S. parents took their children to the dentist by their first birthday, the age recommended by the AAPD and the American Dental Association. While 96% of parents say oral health is important for their children, many do not think toothaches are a serious ailment, with 31% ranking toothaches as the least serious ailment compared to upset stomachs, earaches, headaches and sore throats. That thinking may be one of the many reasons why early childhood caries is quite common in Oklahoma, particularly in non-fluoridated rural areas of the state.

In order to aid the process of decreasing early childhood caries in Oklahoma, and to provide graduating dentists from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry with the knowledge and experience to assist in this effort, the OUCOD Division of Pediatric Dentistry started an Infant Oral Health Clinic in the summer of 2018.

According to Dr. Tim Fagan, clinical professor and head of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry, the program is considered a win-win situation for both the community-at-large and the College of Dentistry.

“The community benefits because this is a low-cost program that teaches parents preventive measures and care to raise their infants and toddlers to have a healthy mouth and teeth,” Dr. Fagan said.

“The program provides oral health education to prevent dental problems and parents leave more informed on how to do so with their kids. The earlier the dental visit, the better the chance there is in preventing dental problems. It is hoped that ultimately the community will benefit via a reduction in the occurrence of early childhood dental caries and less expenditures on dental restorative costs.”

Students participating in this program benefit by actual hands-on experience with infants and toddlers. “In the past, the students have received lectures about infant oral health care, but this program, for the first time, allows the students an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in lectures with an actual infant or toddler,” Dr. Fagan said. “Plus, it allows for ‘one-stop’ service where a parent can get all the dental treatment their children might need at one convenient location.”

An objective of the program is for every OUCOD graduating dentist to leave with the skills and expertise to effectively provide this service wherever they practice. As more dentists with this skill set spread across the state and help parents prevent dental problems in their infants and toddlers, it is hoped that Oklahoma will experience a reduction in the occurrence of early childhood caries within the state. As this program grows, plans are to incorporate dental hygiene students in the “preventive” portion of the program so that they too will feel comfortable working with infants and toddlers and their parents upon graduation. Eventually, medical students and residents might also rotate through the program to learn dental preventive skills, so as to counsel the parents of the infants and toddlers that they will see in their medical practices.

2018 New Faculty Dr. Ashley Cook, Comprehensive Care Dr. Cook graduated from OU COD in 2014 and went straight to practicing. In her short five years out of school, she discovered her love for educating the patients, which sparked her interest of teaching.

Dr. Jeffrey Pierce, Diagnostic and Preventive Sciences Dr. Pierce joined the college after 24 years in private practice in Alva, Oklahoma. He graduated from the OU COD in 1994.

Dr. Fabio Ritto, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. Ritto completed his D.D.S. and OMS residency from Rio de Janeiro State University Medical School at Gama Filho University in Rio de Janeiro. He later earned his PhD at Campinas State University in SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil.

Dr. Marni Russell, Operative Dentistry Dr. Russell earned her AEGD residency from OU COD after graduating from OU COD in 2017. She spends her time split between teaching at the college and working at a private practice in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Dr. Shachi Shah, Comprehensive Care Dr. Shah grew up in India and graduated from Government Dental College in Ahmedabad, India. After moving the U.S., she completed her dental training form the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, where she graduated in 2015. Dr. Shah now serves as a clinical assistant professor in the comprehensive care department.

Dr. Karen Tiwana, Operative Dentistry Dr. Tiwana earned her D.D.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and soon after, completed her AEGD residency in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, Georgia. After being deployed to South Korea and finishing her tour of duty at Fort Myers in the Walter Reed Dental Command in Washington D.C., she started teaching dentistry part-time at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. She also taught at Texas A&M Health Sciences Center, formerly known as Baylor College of Dentistry. She is now a clinical assistant professor at the college.

College Opens New Digital Lab 3D Solutions @ OU Dentistry, a digital lab on the forefront of innovative technology, opened its doors at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry on the Health Sciences Center campus in early August.

The lab provides enhanced workflows and technology services to the Health Sciences Center campus, including virtual designs and planning, scanning, 3D printing and computer-controlled milling.

Examples include dental crowns, splints and dentures for needs within the dental school and various educational and surgical projects for campus departments.

With the most advanced technology, 3D prints can take as little as 45 to 60 minutes, depending on size. Another added benefit of 3D Solutions @ OU Dentistry is that costs are significantly less than using outside companies because the lab is housed right on campus.

Clients also have the benefit of being able to meet face-to-face with the team of prosthodontists who supervise the lab.

Currently, residents and graduate students in the postdoctoral programs have access to the lab and use it on a daily basis, reducing chair time for their patients. Faculty members also have access to the lab and use the 3D materials for courses, giving students a unique hands-on experience they wouldn’t have at other dental schools.

“The digital lab not only gives us the opportunity to provide our faculty with modern teaching materials for our students but provides our students with the knowledge and resources to treat their patients more efficiently,” said Raymond A. Cohlmia, D.D.S., dean of the college, said.

Eventually, the college would like to incorporate the use of the machines permanently into the curriculum, creating digital dental technology courses where students would be trained extensively to use all types of dental technology. The combination of the digital lab and digital dental technology courses will mark the OU College of Dentistry as one of the first dental schools in the United States to teach technology at this level.

Although it may seem the lab popped up overnight, it took several months of extensive research, meetings and brainstorming sessions for 3D Solutions @ OU Dentistry to become a reality. Months before the digital lab opened, Dr. Cohlmia formulated the Digital Dentistry Task Force to start the conversation of integrating technology into the curriculum. The purpose of the task force is to evaluate, design and aid in the implementation of the digital technologies throughout the college for the benefit of the profession, the college’s curriculum, academia, research and other business opportunities.

Yacoub Al Sakka, D.D.S., assistant professor in the Division of Prosthodontics, was appointed chair of the task force and Director of Digital Dental Technologies. Part of his role includes overseeing 3D Solutions @ OU Dentistry. From there, subcommittee members created a plan to open a new digital lab within the College of Dentistry.

“Across the HSC campus, several departments have shown interest in our lab and several others have started using 3D Solutions @ OU Dentistry for collaborative research projects and patient treatments,” said Dr. Al Sakka. “Our vision is to become a leader both on campus and across Oklahoma. We want the lab to be utilized by all dental and medical professionals across the state.”

To promote the new lab, the college hosted an open house and reception in last July to both college and campus leaders. At the open house, visitors had opportunities to tour the space and see demonstrations of the different machines in the lab.

The College Upgrades Central Sterilization The OU College of Dentistry is very proud to announce the latest school improvement project, the relocation and renovation of the central sterilization area. Central sterilization was formerly located on the second floor of the dental school, where it had been since the opening of the school in 1976. There had been upgrades to equipment over the years but the overall workflow had not changed and had become obsolete for today’s standards of infection control.

The new CS area is equipped with state-of-the-art ergonomic workstations, a new hospital-size sterilizer, an automated storage carousel for all of the students’ equipment, and pass-through windows to maintain separation between contaminated equipment and sterilized equipment. All of the upgrades will take the College of Dentistry well into the future. Most importantly, the new area meets or exceeds infection control standards for disinfection and sterilization, providing excellent patient care.

Before the renovations, students had cubbies in which to place their instruments, which made it difficult for staff to find and track the equipment. The new Hanel Rotomat storage carousel now makes it more efficient to provide students with their materials. It’s as easy as entering a student’s ID and the carousel brings the required parts to the retrieval area in just a few seconds. It also takes up 60% less space than the previous system.

2018 Scientific Day

The 37th annual Scientific Day was held at the Reed Center - Sheraton Hotel in Midwest City, on April 10, 2018. More than 500 students, residents, faculty and dentists attended the event, which was co-sponsored by Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation and Heartland Dental.

The evolution of Scientific Day, from its humble beginnings in 1981 to its current size and format, is a testament to the dedication of the students and their faculty mentors who complete meaningful research projects. Of the 56 posters presented at Scientific Day, 16 posters described projects that were funded by the 2017-18 Student Research Program.

This was the 25th year of sponsorship of the Student Research Program by the J. Dean Robertson Society and the sixth year of sponsorship by the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation.

In addition, this was the ninth year having vendor tables at Scientific Day. The participation of eight vendors highlighted the importance of the academic/corporate partnership and how research translates into better products and services for our patients. Fifty-two judges volunteered their time

and expertise to evaluate the posters and the Ishmael Essay Contest, and a total of $11,800 was awarded in prizes as well as two travel awards for student presentations at the annual meetings of the American Association for Dental Research and the American Dental Hygienists' Association.

Albert F. Staples Society

The Albert F. Staples Society is the major student-led community service organization within the OU College of Dentistry. Our mission is to provide service to both the community and to the college. Through our different committees, we aim to serve while promoting interaction among students, faculty and staff.

October was a busy month for Staples Society. Earlier in the month, we participated in an annual oral health fair opportunity at Stanley Hupfeld Academy. Student volunteers provided the elementary school community with free oral health supplies, oral hygiene instructions and intraoral/ extraoral screening exams.

American Student Dental Association

Pre-Dental Simulation Course This course was designed for pre-dental students to gain insight and learn hands-on what the clinical portion of dental school entails. More importantly, it is an opportunity to begin developing the hand skills that are necessary to succeed. Attendees got to work hands-on with various dental instruments, restore cavity preparations, use high-speed handpieces and much more. Students who complete the course have a better idea of what it takes to be a dental student and become a more competitive applicant.

In addition, we once again had the honor of hosting an annual Halloween party, where we partnered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma organization. Traditionally, we invite children and their mentors to the college, and this year, 46 children, an outstanding number, attended the event.

OUCOD student volunteers donned costumes and set up different activities, such as cookie decorating, basketball, arts and crafts, and face painting for the kids to enjoy.

Both events provided wonderful opportunities, allowing students to interact and give back to the community by using the skills learned at the college and connecting with children beyond the scope of dentistry.

Dentistry, at its core, is a profession that calls for service, and we’re fortunate to have a platform such as Staples Society that constantly reminds us of our duty to serve others in dentistry and beyond.

Casino Royale The fifth annual Casino Royale took place on Oct. 12, 2018, at the Skirvin Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City.

Casino Royale is a social and interactive event featuring gaming tables, drinks, dancing, food and great prizes.

Students dress up and enjoy a night of fun with classmates, friends, spouses, faculty and staff. It is one of the events students look forward to all year!

Conference The Career Advancement Leadership (CAL) Conference is a leadership conference held for ASDA members. This year, two of ASDA’s title sponsors, Simmons Bank and Patterson Dental, were the morning guest speakers. After, Shelly Short, a practice management consultant, spoke with the executive committee on team-building and leadership skills to prepare them for the upcoming school year. In the afternoon, general ASDA members and pre-dental students join and listen to Drs. James Wanamaker, Tabitha Arias and Loren Israelsen about their experience in dentistry and ASDA.

Miles for Smiles 5K The second-annual Miles for Smiles 5K was held on Nov. 3, 2018, and was powered by 3IG. More than 150 runners attended and around $5,000 was raised for Good Shepherd Ministries. Good Shepherd Ministries has served the Oklahoma City community since 1977, providing medical and dental care for those in need.

Loupes Fair The Loupes Fair is an event that allows dental students and dental hygiene students to try on loupes and light attachments from different vendors and purchase them that day. The event is held in one of the clinics to allow students to get a feel for the loupes in the clinic setting.

DentFest DentFest is a fun event that ASDA coordinates for students to learn more about available options in the dental industry from more than 20 different vendors. Students get the chance to network, try on loupes, get free swag and much more.

Pre-Dental Prep Day Pre-Dental Prep Day was designed for pre-dental students to gain insight on learning about what the application portion of dental school entails. It is an opportunity to discover who pre-dental students are and what makes them unique.

Students who attend the event learn tips on writing personal statements and mock interviews and can ask dental students any questions they may have to the dental student panel.

Student Council

Rural Dentistry Interest Group On Nov. 16, 2018, the Rural Dentistry Interest Group had the pleasure of having former ODA President Juan Lopez, D.D.S., come and speak about the benefits and lifestyle of practicing in a rural setting. Dr. Lopez discussed his personal experience with practicing in a rural office and then answered any questions students had about rural dentistry. The group was also able to hear from Dr. Winfree and Mr. McCain about the Oklahoma Dental Loan Repayment Program.

Each Summer, Student Council hosts a volleyball tournament among teams formed from the college. The entire college enjoyed free food and refreshments, fun music and friendly competition. There never fails to be an abundance of hilarious team names at this event: Volley Llamas, Setting Ducks and the Flossophers are just a few of the creative names used this year.

Of the 10 teams that registered, only one walked away with the cash prize after playing their final game in near pitch darkness after competing for over three hours! Who knew dental professionals had so much pent-up energy?

The Drilling Diastemas took the gold this year, and this team was composed of four dental students from the class of 2020—Ashley Long, Blake Neece, Brock Shaw and Chris Hunt—who were decked out in matching T-shirts as testament to how serious they were. This exciting event was organized by our STUCO social chairs, Kate Littlefield (DS3) and Lauren Lewis (DS2), who worked extremely hard to put it all together.

We hope this tradition continues for many more years to come!

2019 Kids’ Day The 2019 Kids’ Day was held in late February at the college.

Delta Dental’s Captain Supertooth greeted kids from all over the metro as they arrived for their dental care. Over 130 kids received complimentary cleanings, fillings and crowns provided by dental and dental hygiene students, under the supervision of faculty.

Not only did the kids receive complimentary dental care, but they also got the chance to interact with current students, who taught them about good oral health habits. The student-run program was led by fourth-year students Cooper Pasque, Shelby Steffenhagen and Tara Denton and supervised by Dr. Tim Fagan, Pediatric Dentistry division head. $36,439 worth of complimentary dental services were provided.

Dr. Dennis Gimlin started his fourth chapter in life as an endodontist, serving part time at the Pueblo Community Health Center. His third chapter in life ended in February, when he retired from the army reserve.

Dr. Philip Abshere is treating Medicaid kids in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from the Kirtland Air Force Base. He is still active in organized dentistry and will serve as the NMDA program chairman for the 2019 annual meeting. Dr. Abshere and his wife also enjoy owning and managing three VRBO rental properties in New Mexico.

Dr. Tom Corwin retired from 33 years of practicing dentistry in December 2018. He spent eight years with the Department of Corrections in Oklahoma, with other time spent on active duty with the Navy Dental Crop, in private practice, in contract dentistry at Fort Sill and as a reserve Navy Dental Officer for 21 years.

His new “free” time will be divided between four grandchildren, traveling, camping/fly fishing, flying gliders and woodworking, to name a few.

Dr. Kevin Ray sold his practice and retired at the end of August 2018. The new owner is an OU COD graduate as well, Dr. Amelia Hopper.

Dr. Jeff Baggett was named president of the Southwest Academy of Restorative Dentistry.

Their daughter Taylor blessed the family with their second child. Erika is continuing her pre-dental courses and is working in the practice learning as much as she can in preparation for applying to OU COD. Claire is a student in the OU Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication and and is a Theta (she has made it clear she has NO interest in dentistry). Damon has recently completed his private pilot certificate and is currently working on his instrument and commercial rating for the next chapter.

Dr. Heng Lim started a nonprofit, charitable organization called Hope 4 Cambodia. Dr. Lim and his family return back to the Killing Fields to do mission work.

Dr. Bradley Rowe sold his practice in Las Vegas and moved to Washington state in 2007. He and his wife, Kris, celebrated their 25th anniversary this year. Ms. Desiree Margagliano (DH) won the Ladies Open Single Speed 50-mile race at the 2018 Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

She also won the Single Speed Women’s 152-mile race at the 2018 Gravel Worlds in Lincoln, Nebraska.

IN MEMORIAM ALUMNI

Larry S. Baker, D.D.S. Class of 1982 Dr. Larry S. Baker passed away on Oct. 29, 2018, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born Oct. 11, 1957 to William and Betty Baker. He graduated from the OU College of Dentistry in 1982 and practiced dentistry for more than 30 years, developing many friendships with his patients.

Larry lived life in a fast, fun and adventurous manner. He has an affinity for all things wheels and he had many toys to satisfy his need for speed and off-roading; however, Larry said he was most at peace on the water, when boating or fishing.

Mary Neely Clayton, D.D.S. Class of 1990 Dr. Mary Neely Clayton, age 65, of Odenville, Alabama, passed away on Dec. 8, 2018, after a brave battle with cancer. Mary was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and lived in Moody until 1965 when she moved to Midwest City, Oklahoma. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing in 1976 and, after 10 years of nursing, attended the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, graduating in 1990. Dr. Clayton practiced in the Oklahoma City area, but moved to Alabama upon her retirement in 2012.

Eric Kean, D.D.S. Class of 1995 Dr. Eric Kean passed away on March 2, 2019, in Monett, Missouri.

Following a melanoma diagnosis, Dr. Kean fought valiantly for 10 months until the disease overwhelmed his earthly body. He was born in Aurora, Colorado, Aug. 15, 1959. After graduating from Star Spencer High School, he

earned his business degree at the University of Oklahoma where a certain co-ed caught his eye. In 1986, he and Sherry Cornelison married in Oklahoma City. Eric received his dental degree from the OU College of Dentistry in 1995, completing his AEGD certificate from the USAF residency at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. He retired from the Armed Forces at the rank of lieutenant colonel after 22 years of service. In 2000, Eric settled in Monett, Missouri, with his wife and two children, where he worked in private practice. Eric held a fellowship with the Academy of General Dentistry and was a member of the American Dental Association, Missouri Dental Association, Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

FACULTY Richard Glass, D.D.S. Dr. Richard Glass, 77, of Tulsa, passed away on June 18, 2018. He was one of the original professors recruited to found and open the OU College of Dentistry in the 1970s. He served as chairman of Oral Pathology, teaching dental and medical students for over two decades. In 1995, it was Dr. Glass who directed the teams of dentists, dental students and support personnel in identification of the 167 victims of the Alfred P. Murrah building bombing. He would go on the receive countless awards and accolades throughout his career and was an internationally recognized and sought-after speaker. After retiring from the college in 1996, he was named professor emeritus of oral pathology.

Joe Phillips, D.D.S. Dr. Joe Phillips passed away on Aug. 10, 2018. He was a warm and caring dentist at the OU Dental Hygiene program on the Weatherford site, where he worked for 13 years.

He was a dedicated individual who joined in the celebration of the many accomplishments of the dental hygiene students.

Residents from the inaugural first residency class pose with their certificates of completion, alongside course instructors.

Residency in Implant Dentistry The OU College of Dentistry launched the Residency in Implant Dentistry continuing education course in November 2017. This course consisted of five modules and offered lectures, hands-on laboratory training, cadaver surgical training and live patient care.

The course featured comprehensive didactic instruction on case selection, treatment planning, implant selection, surgical procedures, bone grafting, implant maintenance, managing complications and follow-up care. Each participant focused on live demonstrations, as well as placement and restorations of implants on two pre-selected patients.

With the maximum of eight participants enrolled, there was a 1-to-2 faculty-to-participant ratio during the surgical procedures.

Each doctor received 115 hours of CE credits, and completed the course with the knowledge, understanding and skill sets to immediately incorporate implant dentistry into their practice.

The 2019 course began in January and will conclude in August.
