Petroleum engineers fall into three primary specialties:

Accelerated Degrees These programs allow students to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s in five years.

DRILLING ENGINEERING supervises the drilling of the bore hole deep into the earth and is responsible for preparing a well for production.

PRODUCTION ENGINEERING figures out which rock formations contain oil and gas and the best way to recover those products.

RESERVOIR ENGINEERING evaluates rock formations and determines the quantities of oil and gas found below the earth through studies and simulations that help determine the optimal way to obtain those materials.

about petroleum engineering In today’s world, energy plays an integral role in our lives, and oil and natural gas are key figures. With over 70% of the energy consumed within the United States coming from petroleum, to best ensure our future, a balance between sustainability, efficiency and affordability must be maintained. Petroleum engineering aims to address these concerns and offer solutions.

Petroleum engineers have a strong foundation in math, physics, geology and chemistry and are skilled in the use of advanced computer technology. They work with and apply new technologies and techniques for improved oil and gas recovery while minimizing its impact upon the natural world.

Professor spotlight: a fresh look at safety Associate professor and director of the National Oilwell Varco Drilling Simulator, Catalin Teodoriu, equips future engineers at the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering to think about safety and human factors in new ways.

Dr. Teodoriu explained his approach to safety and the creation of a Safety Moment: “As a teacher, I believe that developing an attitude of safety must be a part of students’ educations, so I have initiated a Safety Moment concept in my Drilling and Completion II class. The oil and gas industry has worked hard to implement a state-of-the-art safety culture among all its sectors, but safety starts with the individuals accepting and embracing a positive safety attitude. The concept of a Safety Moment is simple and follows the oil and gas industry. Students are asked to present a near-miss experience they have observed. The whole class is challenged to comment and address solutions in how this could be avoided.”

Dr. Teodoriu’s passion for safety led him to the research area of Human Factors, which evaluates behavior, human interaction with technology, systems and more, and then finds ways to minimize human error.

“Both concepts – safety awareness and Human Factors – help our students by offering them non-technical skills that enhance their ability to better perform in the real world, all while reducing accidents. Students will have the ability to combine their knowledge with learned non-technical skills in order to better perform in the complex oil and gas environment.”

Every year, Dr. Catalin, as his students call him, takes petroleum engineering students on a study abroad trip to his home country of Romania. Along with getting to learn alongside Romanian petroleum engineering students, OU students get to explore the country…and even meet his mom!

Digging Deep The NOV Drilling Simulator, housed at the Rawl Engineering Practice Facility, gives students unique virtual experiences, allowing them to safely apply their academic knowledge to real-life drilling scenarios. When students enter the NOV Drilling Simulator, they enter a space designed to mimic a real offshore drilling rig. The simulator even includes the actual chairs used by engineers on drilling ships and can be programmed to include bells and other distracting noises often found on a ship.

Whether offshore or inland, the simulator provides valuable practice no matter where students eventually work.

The University of Oklahoma was the first university in the world to have access to an industry-grade drilling simulator. It is used by undergraduate students as part of a curriculum that focuses on experiential learning and human factors.

student spotlight: finding home I chose OU after meeting an OU recruiter who came all the way to Abu Dhabi, UAE! I learned that not only did OU have one of the top petroleum engineering programs in the U.S., is a Tier 1 research institution, and provides an emphasis on experiential learning, but it is more broadly a part of this amazing University. Four years ago, I arrived in Norman, sat foot on campus, and knew I had made the right choice. This is home. Every day that I get to walk into this building, I feel blessed. Undergraduate labs unlike any other Our students work in teaching and research labs on equipment like a Scanning Electron Microscope, which is virtually unheard of for petroleum engineering undergraduate students. At most universities, this technology is often reserved for graduate students.

Professor Chandra Rai called OU’s petroleum engineering labs, “the envy of universities across the nation.”

Among our many labs is the Integrated Core Characterization Center, which has unparalleled industrial, commercial, and academic capabilities.

There you will often find faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students all working on different projects and assignments. The lab offers the widest range of measurement and research opportunities in the industry.

Mewbourne School labs have unique capabilities in the area of shale research, providing our students with the knowledge to enter today’s energy industry.

irani center for energy solutions: bridging classroom and career “Being an entrepreneur, in my mind, is not necessarily starting your own company. It’s how you approach a project or a problem.” - Ronnie K. Irani

Mewbourne College alumnus Ronnie Irani had a vision to advance students’ careers by merging entrepreneurial problem solving skills with technical expertise in energy-related fields. This unique program brings real-world, real-time projects from energy companies to the Center’s newly renovated hub, a modern office space in Sarkeys Energy Center.

A Student team will work with a company on a specific project that could involve anything from: dissecting existing oil and gas plays; preparing industry-styled type-curve and reserve reports; evaluating undeveloped zones for drilling/recompletion opportunities; evaluating re-stimulation, artificial lift and compression configurations for optimizing production; and evaluating petrophysical and geological characteristics of resource plays.

You and your team will provide the company with actionable results. Faculty oversight is in place, making the Irani Center the perfect bridge from classroom to career. The skills you gain are multi-disciplinary and practical, and will differentiate you from your peers at OU and at other energy-focused universities.

ou team wins international drilling competition The Drillbotics® competition involves teams of university students designing and building a miniature 500-pound drilling rig that uses sensors and control algorithms to autonomously drill a rock sample. The 2019 OU Drillbotics team was named the international champions after beating out 11 other teams from around the world who qualified for the international competition. Every year teams are required to meet new challenges. The 2019 competition involved students performing precise directional drilling operations. The Drillbotics® competition showcases the OU Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering’s focus on innovation and experiential learning.

student services + student life Pioneer Natural Resources Student Services Center Pioneer Natural Resources Student Services Center provides academic advising and student life support to the students at the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy. The Center is the hub for mentorship, student organizations, inclusion and diversity, tutoring, leadership, scholarships, college events and graduation. As a student at Mewbourne College, you’ll work with an advisor throughout your academic career to reach your academic and professional goals through one-on-one meetings once a semester. Advisors can connect you to resources both within the college and on campus.

International programs As a future geoscientist or petroleum engineer, your work will take you across the globe. The College’s International Programs office provides you with the resources and support to kick start your life has a global citizen.

The International Programs office organizes annual study abroad opportunities with Mewbourne College faculty that can last anywhere from 10 days to several weeks. We also help facilitate individual, semester- or year-long study abroad opportunities with partner universities.

Because of the full course requirements of our degree programs, we know that many traditional study abroad programs do not work for Mewbourne College students. That’s why we work to make sure Mewbourne College’s international programs apply to geosciences and petroleum engineering and fit in your schedule. This means most programs are accelerated, allowed students to still have summer internships. International experiences yield personal growth, leadership skills and will aid you in your professional endeavors.

Studying abroad was one of the most life-changing experiences I have ever been through. AT&T Summer Bridge The AT&T Summer Bridge program has become a model for ensuring engineering students’ academic preparedness and success. The four-week, on-campus program is for freshman students who have been accepted to the University of Oklahoma and who are planning to study in the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy or Gallogly College of Engineering. It is designed to help students prepare for college-level engineering and math course work. Jerry Holmes leadership program for engineers and scientists The Jerry Holmes Leadership Program for Engineers and Scientists provides leadership education for students in the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy or Gallogly College of Engineering.
