GALLOW GREEN

Gallow Green is a large town situated in e west central Lowlands of Scotland. Located nor of e Gleniffer Bræs, e town borders e city of Glasgow to e east, and straddles e banks of e White Cart Water, a tributary of e River Clyde.

The Paisley witches, also known as e Bargarran witches or e Renfrewshire witches, were tried in Paisley in 1697. Seven were convicted and five were hanged and en burnt on e Gallow Green. Their remains were buried at Maxwelton Cross in e west end of e town. This was e last mass execution for witchcra in western Europe. A horse shœ was placed on top of e site to lock in e evil. A horse shoe is still visible in e middle of is busy road junction today— ough not e original. The modern shoe is made of bronze and bears e inscription, “Pain Inflicted, Suffering Endured, Injustice Done”.
