Introduction

Welcome to Oxford! Starting university is exciting and can feel overwhelming, but you're definitely not doing it alone

The Oxford LGBTQ+ Society is the largest LGBTQ+ society in UK higher education, with over 3,000 members and one of the most active communities at the university We're a welfare society focused on supporting all our members, whatever your needs might be

OULGBTQ+ runs events throughout the week focused on creating community across colleges Whether it be Trans Tea or Tuesgays, there’s definitely an event for you to come and enjoy

There are also multiple events each month throughout the University and the city as a whole that we share on our mailing list and Instagram, such as the Proud Voices Choir, LOVE Womens’s night at the JF, and Oxford Pride itself. Do make sure to sign up to the mailing list so you don’t miss out on anything! (details can be found below )

We’re always looking for new members for our committee and would love for you to get involved with shaping the Queer scene at Oxford! Please do see our committee list for any particular vacancies… but we also welcome getting in touch with any suggestions or improvements that you might have

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any worries or concerns about anything related to LGBTQ+ life at Oxford, we will try our absolute best to help

Congratulations again for the MAJOR achievement of being at Oxford - how exciting!! I hope that you all get to make the absolute most of your time here (and go to as many Tuesgays as physically possible). If I could give my first year self any bit of advice - other than to go to my economics lectures! - it would be to turn up to every event that looks fun, put yourself out there, and say hello to as many new people as possible. Some of my best friendships at Uni started with random chats at Tuesgays, friends that I would’ve never met otherwise Best of luck for your first term, it’ll go so quickly.

Big love, Darcey xx (she/her) - OULGBTQ+ President

Committee Spotlight

Why did you join committee?

A previous Social Sec asked me very nicely in fresher’s week whilst I was a little drunk at the pub... lesson learnt... Just kidding, the committee has been an amazing group to be a part of and I’m very proud of all of the amazing work that they do.

Favourite song?

Hmm a hard one, according to last.fm my most played song since starting Oxford has been ‘i think about it all the time featuring bon iver’ by charli xcx - so make of that what you will.

Best Oxford Advice: OBVIOUSLY join the committee and apply to be President in Hilary duh!!

Also, to make the most out of every single week that you’re here in Oxford You only get 72 of them in your 3 years - which really isn’t that many when you think about it

Why did you join committee?

To find the lesbians!! But more seriously to give back to the queer community in Oxford, now more than ever <3

Favourite Album: Fetch The Bolt Cutters - Fiona Apple

Fun Fact: I never have and never will stick to a consistent hobby - painting, embroidery, sewing, chainmail weaving, baking, gaming, ballet, cold water swimming - I've done them all (somewhat badly).

Best Oxford Advice: Apply to committee via ousecre@gmail.com

The secretary takes care of organising and minuting meetings and elections. She also runs the Rainbow Parenting Scheme and the committee role applications throughout term. If you ever have a question she can put you in the right direction; email ousecre@gmail.com

Committee S

Why did you join the committee?

I regularly attended Tuesgays and loved the events and meeting new people, so I thought it would be fun to help organise them

Favourite song? A pearl by Mitski

Fun fact: I've owned a total of 12 cats my lifetime thus far

The Jr social secretary works alongside the other Jr Social secretary to help organise and run our biggest event Tuesgays, a weekly event held at different colleges. Responsibilities include helping book venues, setting up and packing away, ensuring events run smoothly, and occasionally working alongside the bar team to help run the bar.

Role on the committee - My role involves running and advertising LGBTQ+ related academic events at Oxford, letting you know all about the cool research currently being done at our university (and beyond!), and helping foster an academically-focussed queer community Feel free to email me at ouacademicofficer@gmail com to get in touch!

Why I chose this role - I'm from Ynys Môn in North Wales, and growing up queer in a rural area meant I had to search around a lot for community, especially in online spaces History, theory, and literature are a massive part of my queer identity and experience - it's something I'm very passionate about and want to continue to study in the future

I'm always up for a chat, especially if it's about Horrible Histories, the Satanic Panic, and 80s heavy metal!

Hi! I'm a 2nd year Computer Science student at St Anne's and I'm one of your trans reps this year! I hope I can bring lots of fun events and support to the community this year, and look forward to meeting everyone, new or old, again in term time! The trans reps represent the interests of trans folks to the rest of the committee, act as a point of contact for any welfare concerns pertaining to being trans, and run events such as our weekly Trans & Non-Binary Tea, which is every Friday (see the newsletter for details!) We are also in charge of putting on the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) memorial service, and manage a trans & non-binary WhatsApp group and Discord server where people can chat and share resources - if you'd like to join, you can message Lucas at outrans01@gmail com and Alice at outrans02@gmail.com
