honoring Dick Connolly
April 21, 2025
Welcome to our Annual Banquet! We are honored to have you here tonight to support Ouimet Scholars, celebrate Dick Connolly, and kick off the golf season.
Since our founding in 1949 with just 13 Scholars, our mission has remained the same: to provide impactful, need-based college scholarships. This fall, we will award more than 500 Ouimet Scholarships, continuing our proud legacy.
Dick Connolly
Ouimet Fund Trustee
Dick Connolly is one of nearly 7,000 Scholars who have benefited from this program. From a humble beginning as a young caddie to becoming one of the nation’s most successful financial advisors, his journey is remarkable. A standout golfer at Malden Catholic and Holy Cross, Dick has also been the greatest benefactor of this organization. No one is more deserving of the Ouimet Award, and we are proud to add his name to our distinguished list of honorees. He and his wife, Ann Marie, created this event and have made the scholarships it funds possible.
As the cost of college continues to rise, we are committed to making an even greater impact as we embark on the next 75 years of Ouimet Scholarships. Currently, our awards cover about 60% of our Scholars’ financial need. Our goal is to increase that support to at least 75% by the time today’s first-year students graduate.
Our success has been built on strong programs like the Bag Tag. However, with growing financial challenges for our Scholars, it’s time to reach even higher. If you believe in the power of education, the value of working in golf, and the future of our Scholars, I invite you to explore deeper engagement through our Named Endowed Scholarship Program and Sustaining Lifetime Memberships.
A special thank you to our student speaker, Jaelyn DeBoise, who represents all Ouimet Scholars and Alumni tonight. Your story of resilience, your bond with your father, and your gratitude for those who have shaped you are inspiring.
We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Michael Zmetrovich, recipient of the Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Award, for his generous and passionate service to the Ouimet mission. This recognition reflects the profound impact a dedicated volunteer can have on our organization.
On behalf of the entire Ouimet Fund family, thank you all for your generosity, belief in our mission, and dedication to changing lives. And once again, thank you Dick Connolly for the extraordinary example you’ve set for us all.
Please enjoy your evening!
Sincerely,
Duncan Gratton

In the 75-year history of the
Ouimet
Fund, nobody has meant more to our mission
As a Scholarship Alumnus, Director, Trustee, and President, Connolly has proudly served the Ouimet Fund for over 40 years. He is The Fund’s single greatest donor, including establishing an endowed scholarship in his family’s name which continues to significantly impact Ouimet Scholars every year.
Connolly was a driving force in transforming the Annual Banquet from a small affair into the largest golf dinner in the nation, serving as the event’s lead sponsor. In 1997, he invited his financial services client and dear friend Arnold Palmer to receive the inaugural Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf.
As we celebrate the 25th Banquet since Palmer’s recognition tonight, the annual event has raised nearly $17 million to benefit Ouimet Scholars. The Ouimet Fund was fortunate to benefit from the initial collaboration between Connolly and
Palmer, which laid the foundation for honoring other legends of the game — from Jack and Barbara Nicklaus to Jim Nantz, Juli Inkster, and many more noted on page 7.
Dick started as a caddie as an 8-year-old at Woburn Country Club, then joined the course superintendent crew. Growing up in a large extended family with a long history of caddying and competitive golf was certainly a catalyst for Dick to start his own golf journey. He worked 15 years at the course and earned a Ouimet Scholarship to attend the College of the Holy Cross. He has never forgotten where he came from and the help he received at a young age, making a lifelong commitment to educational and philanthropic institutions with his wife Ann Marie.
Following last year’s Banquet, Connolly retired as the Managing Partner of The Connolly Group at Morgan Stanley. He enjoyed an acclaimed career as a financial professional, managing investment portfolios for more than 50 years as one of the top brokers in the country. During that success, he was front and center for many important initiatives for the Ouimet Fund, including, among others, Presenting Sponsor of the Annual Banquet, chairing the Ouimet Memorial Tournament, Board Governance initiatives and serving as President, the efforts for the Ouimet Fund’s home within William F. Connell Golf House, strategic plans and capital campaigns, our Endowed Scholarship program launch, and many important anniversary celebrations.
In recognition of his legacy, advocacy, and philanthropy in the world of caddying, Connolly was inducted into the Caddie Hall of Fame by the Western Golf Association in 2023. Also inducted that night was fellow Ouimet Alumnus, Peter Lynch, who is making Dick’s formal introduction tonight. Both men, despite all their professional success, routinely reference that their time caddying was the best job they’ve ever held.
Today, Connolly remains deeply committed to the Ouimet mission and serves on the Executive Committee of The Fund. In retirement, he is also enjoying new activities and spending time with Ann Marie and the families of their three sons — Richard, Ryan, and Kevin — which now include five grandchildren.
There is nobody who has done more for the Ouimet Scholars and the Ouimet Fund, since Francis Ouimet himself, than Richard F. Connolly, Jr. It is with great pleasure that the Ouimet Fund is honoring Dick Connolly tonight with the Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf.

Springfield native Jaelyn DeBoise is a junior at Stonehill College. While her mother struggled with health issues including a cancer diagnosis, Jaelyn was raised by her father Cortez. Growing up, Jaelyn and Cortez would search the woods for golf balls and piece together her golf bag with used and donated clubs. Through her determination and her father’s unwavering support, Jaelyn became a first-generation college student and earned a spot on Stonehill’s Division I women’s golf team.
Jaelyn is a marketing major and holds a minor in both Spanish and entrepreneurship. She looks forward to sharing her story, and how her time working at Springfield Country Club paved the way for her to become a first-gen college student. Your support allows young men and women like Jaelyn to conquer challenges and pursue their dreams.

“Receiving the Ouimet Scholarship has been truly life-changing. Without the financial help, I don’t know where I’d be. The Ouimet Fund has lifted that burden, allowing me to fully embrace the college experience and work as hard as possible to reach my goals.”
We are happy to participate in this well-earned tribute, honoring your decades long commitment to the Ouimet Fund.

The Ouimet Fund is thankful for 75 years of consistent support from our partner clubs. Although each club operates differently, all 80 clubs remain committed to helping deserving Ouimet Scholars reach their potential.
These great partnerships would not be possible without our dedicated Ouimet Committees and Club Personnel who passionately promote the scholarship opportunity to young men and women working at their club, and the fundraising programs to their fellow members.
We thank all our ambassadors for their commitment to sharing the benefits of being involved with The Fund!
Liberty Mutual Insurance is proud to support the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund. We applaud your commitment to helping young people further their education.
Congratulations to 2025’s Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf honoree, Dick Connolly
The annual Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award was established in 2000 in honor of tonight’s Banquet Honoree. Mr. Connolly has proudly served the Ouimet Fund for over 40 years and is the embodiment of everything a Ouimet volunteer can be.
We are proud to recognize Michael Zmetrovich with this year’s Connolly Award. As a Ouimet Alumnus, Michael has passionately given back to the Ouimet Fund for 30 years. He has been a leader by participating in the Golf Marathon and Sprint, advocating for caddie programs and young people who work in golf, serving as Ouimet Chair to the Tedesco Country Club members and as an advocate for others across the North Shore.
His Golf Sprint fundraising efforts have eclipsed $700,000 over the years and 70 Scholars from Tedesco Country Club have received more than $1.3 million in aid during his time in that role. His love of the game started at Murphy’s Garrison Golf Center and then caddying as a youngster at Haverhill Country Club before playing college golf.
Much like Dick Connolly, Michael’s modest beginnings are part of his story of a passion for the game and also led him to a career in the golf industry. He prioritizes personal relationships and acknowledges his privilege to pay it forward. We thank Michael for his tireless and longstanding efforts for Ouimet Scholars!

Becoming a Sustaining Lifetime Member of the Ouimet Fund is a lasting commitment to empowering the next generation of Scholars. At this elevated support level, Sustaining Lifetime Members demonstrate extraordinary generosity, directly increasing scholarship awards for deserving students across the state.
Membership in this exclusive group goes beyond the initial pledge — it represents a continued dedication to making a meaningful impact on Scholars’ lives, ensuring that donors leave a lasting legacy throughout their lifetime.
Sustaining Lifetime Members receive:
• A personally engraved bag tag signifying this support level
• The opportunity to increase business contacts and forge lifelong friends at Ouimet golf outings
• Exclusive invitations to annual Ouimet events
The Ouimet Fund’s Named Endowed Scholarship Program is a vital program for growth. Since 1991, the number of endowed scholarships has expanded from just five to nearly 200. This program provides strong financial stability for The Fund, reinforcing our long-term commitment to donors.
Named Endowed Scholarships now support 40% of the total annual Ouimet awards, with funds permanently restricted and carefully invested to ensure the scholarships’ sustainability for future generations.
The Named Endowed Scholarship Program creates a unique link between the donor, honoree, or sponsoring organization and the values of golf, Francis Ouimet, youth development, and education. Donors often share the sense of fulfillment they experience, knowing they’ve contributed significantly to shaping a young student’s future.
The Ouimet Fund hosts an annual event called the Investing in Lifetimes Reception to unite donors and Scholars. This special event was held in June at Wellesley Country Club.
More than 200 Ouimet community members gathered together, shared conversation, and enjoyed a panel discussion on caddie programs featuring Ken Charpentier from Sacconnesset Golf Club, Michael Moore, PGA from The Kittansett Club, and Andrew Sbordone from Charles River Country Club.

Since 1996, the Ouimet Fund has partnered with the City of Boston and its two golf courses, George Wright Golf Course and William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park. The program offers underserved communities and demographic groups the unique opportunity to earn a scholarship through service to golf.
When The Fund first partnered with the Boston Summer Jobs Program, two Scholars received a total of $1,700 in financial aid for college. In 2024, a record 39 Scholars received more than $250,000 in Ouimet Scholarships.
The Fund has committed to investing even further in the program by funding new infrastructure needs for the employees, as well as literacy and life skills programming to supplement the golf components of their summer job.

George Wright was my first job ever and my first true introduction to golf. I’ve grown a lot here and it’s built my character as I’ve gotten older. It’s made it a lot easier going forward knowing that there’s financial help coming from the Ouimet Fund to get me through college and beyond.
