A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Welcome to another fantastic year of the Ouachita Arts Series! Ouachita is in its fifth season of presenting world-class artists that entertain and amaze our audiences with remarkable artistic endeavors by Ouachita students, faculty and guest artists. This year’s Arts Series will bring outstanding performers, musicians, art exhibitions and productions. The season will open with the winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artists Competition and the National Association of Teachers of Singing Young Artist Competition, baritone Andrew Chiang. We are also excited to host the insturmental talents of Bob Boyd Sounds; the Highlands Duo – Dr. Ben Shute, violin, and Ms. Anastasia Abu Bakar, harpsichord; soprano Hooryoung Hwang; and Dr. Kim Tung Poon, piano. Two guest art exhibitions will be on campus this year, Informed by Shadows by Lin Holland, senior professional tutor at Liverpool Hope University in England, and the photographic work of Beverly Buys, professor of photography in the Ellis College of Arts and Sciences at Henderson State University. Ouachita’s School of Fine Arts will complement the Art Series with a wide array of music concerts, recitals and an opera production; theatrical plays, musicals and dramas; and both faculty and senior art exhibits. You can find more information on these events at obu. edu/finearts or by following us on Facebook. Whether you are visiting us as a season ticket holder, a member of the Friends of Fine Arts or just for a single event, your presence and partnership are invaluable. I hope you will join us for an exciting year of artistic excellence. Dr. Gary Gerber Dean of Ouachita’s School of Fine Arts

MUSIC

Allen Asbury

André Chiang

A contemporary Christian recording artist with Doxology Record Company, Allen Asbury has had four No. 1 hits and seven Top Ten songs. His recording “Somebody’s Praying Me Through” became The Presidential Prayer Team’s theme song and National Day of Prayer theme in 2003. Other hits include “The Light of That City,” “All About Grace” and “This Is My Father’s World.” Asbury also portrayed the part of Simon Peter in the award-winning musical “The Promise” over 3,000 times. Those productions began in Glen Rose, Texas, continued for six years in Branson, Mo., and also toured internationally, including performances at the Kremlin State Palace in Russia, at the Olympic stadium in Korea and in New York City – as well as in churches and arenas across the U.S. Asbury earned his B.A. in Christian ministries from West Coast Christian College in Fresno, Calif. He currently lives with his family in Branson, Mo., where he serves as minister of music at Grace Community Assembly.

The winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs 2017 Biennial Young Artist Competition in Men’s Voice, André Chiang has been touted as “vocally commanding,” bringinig his lyrical voice to repertoire spanning from George F. Handel to Phillip Glass. Chiang’s recent opera engagements include Schaunard in La bohème with Mobile Opera and Charlie in Three Decembers with Painted Sky Opera. Recent recital and concert credits include “A Romantic Evening” with La Grange Symphony Orchestra and baritone soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Richmond Symphony. Chiang was a Regional Finalist for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and has earned numerous other awards and honors for his work. Chiang earned his B.M. degree at the University of South Alabama and his M.M. degree at the Manhattan School of Music. He currently is pursuing a D.M.A. degree in vocal performance at LSU.

Bob Boyd Sounds The Bob Boyd Sounds – David Higginbotham, Randy McDonald and Sim Flora – are having the time of their lives playing and singing songs from the ’30s through the ’90s. These four guys will knock you out when they play music of the big bands. All four of them sing – solo and in harmony – music from Sinatra and the Modernaires to Stevie Wonder!

Highlands Duo The Highlands Duo includes American violinist Dr. Benjamin Shute and Malaysian harpsichordist Anastasia Abu Bakar, who first performed together in 2009 while studying at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. During their studies in Freiburg, and

subsequently in Frankfurt, they were mentored by leading members of the Freiburger Barockorchester, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Musica Antiqua Köln, Berliner Barock Solisten and La Stagione Frankfurt. They have performed together at European venues including the Schlosskonzerte Bad Krozingen and Schlossfestspiele Marburg and have appeared at American institutions such as the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, Dickinson College, Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma Baptist University and Southeast Oklahoma State University.

As an advocate of new music, she has been privileged to work with today’s foremost American composers, including George Tsontakis and Dan Welcher, and has premièred with such artists as the Penderecki Quartet. Her recent interest in Chinese-Western syncretism in music and contemporary Chinese composers also has resulted in numerous lecturerecitals and performances in the U.S., Asia and Europe. Lin Holland is Fine Art Course Leader and Senior Professional Tutor with specialisms in sculpture and sitespecific installation. Previous lecturing posts include: Visiting Lecturer, University of Liverpool School of Architecture, Visiting Lecturer, Liverpool John Moores University M.A. Artist/ Teacher Programme and Visiting Artist/Lecturer at The Western Australian School of Art & Design. Research has received multiple awards from: Arts Council England, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, The Gulbenkian Foundation, The British Council, The Higher Education Innovation Fund, Foundation for Sport & The Arts, Liverpool Cathedral, Liverpool Hope Research and REF funds, amongst others.

In 2011 Beverly began the series Delta in Blue, a study of the Arkansas Delta Region. She wanted to make distinctive photographs that would hold their own on a wall with other works of art. Beverly prints in cyanotype, a chemical process that varies in shades of blue and brown affording variety in color. She chooses to show her hand in the making of the print, to let drips, stains, fogs and rough edges be an element of the design and meaning of the image. Her work in photography can be considered painterly as a result. Beverly Buys is a native of Hot Springs, Arkansas where she continues to live. She received a B.S.E in Art Education from Henderson State University in 1977 and received an M.A. in Photography from the University of Little Rock at Arkansas in 1994 and an M.F.A in Photography from the University of Memphis in 1996. This exhibit will be located at the Rosemary Gossett Adams Gallery, first floor, Moses-Provine Hall.

A Visual Compromise • Greta James A studio artist’s foray into the world of graphic design and illustration. I’ve found as a designer and illustrator that each field informs my approach to the other. I believe the process of combining illustration and design has strengthened my work’s effectiveness. Keeping in mind that my artwork will ultimately become an element in a larger design provides insight and inspiration as I complete it. Likewise, I enjoy designing in a way that suits my illustrations. I strive for subtlety in my designs so that imagery and layout harmonize rather than fight for the reader’s attention. Incorporating unique artwork always encourages me to treat each design as a unique expression as well. This collection is a record of my attempts to create a visual compromise between my graphic and illustrative efforts. Greta James is an Ouachita alum (‘11) and graduated with an MFA in Illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design. She is currently an illustrator and designer at Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. This exhibit will be located at the Rosemary Gossett Adams Gallery, first floor, Moses-Provine Hall.

Both creative inside and outside the classroom, Ouachita’s visual arts faculty will present an exhibition representing the scope of professional creative work by faculty who teach in the Rosemary Gossett Adams Department of Visual Arts. Faculty members will exhibit a variety work including graphic design, photography, illustration, sculpture and painting. The exhibit will be held March 1-26, 2019 and will be on display in the Rosemary Gossett Adams Galleries, Moses-Provine Hall. René Zimny is assistant professor of visual arts and teaches graphic design courses and typography. He has a BA from Ouachita in graphic design and an MFA in graphic design from Savannah College of Art and Design. Ferris Williams is assistant professor of visual arts and teaches graphic design courses, illustration, and art and design history courses. He has a BA from Ouachita in graphic design and an MFA in Illustration from Marywood University. Kara Gunter is adjunct instructor and teaches ceramics at Ouachita. She has a BFA in sculpture from Winthrop University and a MFA in sculpture from the University of South Carolina.
