Thanks to this, I can now write one of my favourite words “recognition”.

In the month of July they gave us an award in the second edition of the Nautilus Project Awards as Sustainability Influencers. Now, the Office of the Commissioner for Sustainable Development and Future Generations have selected us as candidates for one of their prestigious Gibraltar Sustainability awards, more precisely that of “Commitment to sustainability”. An honour that from this column we want to record our appreciation for. Good luck to all participants, whoever takes the trophy, we are all winners.

Meanwhile, we continue to build friendships, learn about projects, design new strategies to bring to fruition the much desired and necessary Green Week Gibraltar for next 2021.

And since OTWO is a magazine that lives beyond the atom or the bit, we will soon have new sections such as those dedicated to public facilities in this part of the world: visitor centres, information points, nature classrooms or Eco museums; and another dedicated to a selection of new releases, films or series that deal with our favourite topics.

Finally, I am pleased to inform you about the upcoming opening of our OTWO CAVE virtual store.

Now, in addition to promoting fair and sustainable consumption from our pages, we will now offer our readers the possibility of purchasing our ecotourism packages, a selection of the most environmentally friendly products or a very interesting collection of digital publications.

I have the feeling that the world is itching to offer something better, Gibraltar will undoubtedly be its epicentre. Health, Stamina and Splendour.

Todo un honor que desde estas líneas queremos agradecer. Suerte a los participantes, gane quien gane, ganamos todos.

Mientras seguimos tejiendo amistades, conociendo proyectos, diseñando nuevas estrategias para llevar a buen puerto, para cuando la tempestad arrecie, el tan deseado como necesario Green Week Gibraltar para el próximo 2021.

South Africa has one of the most diverse floras out of any country in the world. Indeed, many of the more commonly used garden plants are from South Africa, particularly in regions of the world with warm, Mediterranean-type climates, because the southern Cape region has a climate that is very similar to ours here on the Rock. Thus, many of the plants that we commonly associate with horticulture in Gibraltar are actually South African in origin.

Plants with root bulbs are particularly diverse in South Africa, and these too are popular in gardening. Many are exceptionally attractive. Quite a number of these flower in autumn, to coincide with the first rains. These include attractive and often unusual Haemanthus species. Although many of these have red flowers, the Elephant’s Tongue Haemanthus albiflos is an unusual plant with striking white flowers. The species’ common name, Elephant’s Tongue, is derived from its foliage rather than its flowers, and indeed many species of Haemanthus have unusual and often impressive leaves. “albiflos” refers to its white flowers. This is a very hardy, drought-tolerant species with attractive flowers and foliage that will grow very well alongside succulent plants, including South African species.

Sudáfrica disfruta de una de las floras más diversas del mundo. De hecho, varias de las plantas de jardín más habituales provienen de allí, y, más concretamente en zonas cálidas, de climatología mediterránea, dado que la región del Cabo es muy similar en clima al Peñón. De ahí que muchas de las plantas que habitualmente asociamos a la horticultura local provengan originalmente de Sudáfrica.

Allí existe significativa diversidad en cuanto a los bulbos de raíz y éstos están también muy extendidos en la jardinería. No pocos son excepcionalmente atractivos a la vista. Varios de los mismos florecen en otoño, coincidiendo con las primeras lluvias. Incluidas aquí están las atractivas y poco frecuentes especies Haemanthus.

Aunque muchas tienen flores rojas, la Lengua de elefante Haemanthus albiflos es una planta inusual con llamativas flores blancas. El nombre vulgar de la especie, Lengua de elefante, se debe más a su follaje que a sus flores, y otras varias especies Haemanthus presentan hojas poco habituales a menudo impresionantes. El término ‘albiflos’ se refiere a esas hojas blancas ya citadas. Over the last month, millions of acres across the west coast of the United States have been decimated by wildfires, and with no rain in sight, conditions are expected to worsen over the coming weeks.

California and Oregon are the worst affected states, with thousands of residents forced to abandon their homes and, in some areas, the terrible air quality caused by the fumes is so extreme that it has gone beyond the Air Quality Index scale.

Several lightning strikes are thought to have sparked the fires, but high temperatures, dry air, strong winds and dry conditions have caused them to spread uncontrollably throughout the west coast.

Scientists have warned that these are the worst fires the region has seen in 18 years and that climate change is causing wildfires to become increasingly intense and more prevalent.

It is estimated that over 6.7 million acres of land have burned this year, tens of thousands of people have been left homeless and several small towns have been completely destroyed.

The scale of the smoke produced from the wildfires is so large that they not only crossed the United States but were also carried across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe. Smoke from wildfires is not only extremely hazardous to human health but also pump significant amounts of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

This year has experienced some of the world’s worse wildfires in recorded history, particularly in Australia, the Arctic and Siberia, Indonesia and Brazil. Climate scientists continue to sound the alarm, warning that the severity and frequency of destructive weather events and fires will continue to rise if climate targets are not met.

RECORD-BREAKING WILDFIRES RAVAGE THE US

Incendios sin precedentes causan estragos en los Estados Unidos Millones de acres de terreno han sido devastados por los fuegos en la costa oeste de los Estados Unidos durante el último mes y sin lluvia a la vista, se teme que las condiciones empeoren en las próximas semanas.

Se cree que varios rayos causaron los fuegos, cuyas llamas se extendieron luego sin control por la costa oeste debido a las altas temperaturas y el aire seco.

Los científicos han alertado de que estos son los peores incendios que sufre la zona en 18 años y que el cambio climático está incrementando la prevalencia e intensidad de los fuegos.

Más de 6,7 millones de acres han ardido este año, según las estimaciones, y decenas de miles de personas han perdido su hogar así como varias pequeñas ciudades han sido destruidas en su totalidad.

La cantidad de humo producido por los incendios es tal que no sólo han atravesado los Estados Unidos sino que el viento los llevó por todo el océano Atlántico hasta Europa. El humo procedente de este tipo de fuegos no sólo es enormemente perjudicial para nuestra salud, sino que también emite cantidades ingentes de CO2 a la atmósfera.

Durante el presente año se han registrado algunos de los peores incendios naturales de la historia, particularmente en Australia, el Ártico y Siberia. Los científicos climáticos siguen alertando y avisan de que la severidad y frecuencia de los acontecimientos meteorológicos destructivos así como de los incendios seguirán aumentando si no se cumplen los objetivos climáticos.

‘STRESSED’ ORCAS RAMMING BOATS OFF THE COAST OF SPAIN Scientists are baffled by several recent incidents of killer whales ramming boats off the coast of Northern Spain and in the Strait of Gibraltar.

This unusual behaviour has left several boats severely damaged with some requiring assistance to return to shore and one sailor with minor injuries.

The most recent “attack” took place off the coast of Galicia, when a 36-foot yacht was repeatedly struck by an orca. The vessel had to be towed back to land as a result of damage to its steering.

Two other incidents occurred off the coast near Vigo on the same day, with one of the boats losing part of its rudder.

In late July in the Strait of Gibraltar, a pod of nine killer whales rammed the hull of a 46-foot vessel for more than an hour, disabling the autohelm and engi-

ne and leaving the crew stranded in a shipping lane.

It is normal for intelligent marine mammals like dolphins and whales to interact and follow small boats, but scientists are trying to determine exactly why orcas are suddenly becoming aggressive.

At the moment, the consensus amongst researchers is that this unusual behaviour is likely due to stress caused by busy waterways and depleted food sources.

These highly intelligent creatures may also recognise that people on boats are hauling large amounts of fish, relating the scarcity of food to human activities.

Cetaceans such as killer whales and dolphins are already under threat in the Strait, with Orcas classed as endangered with fewer than 50 left in the area.

A major shipping route, the narrow Strait of Gibraltar is considered one of the worst places in the world for orcas to live, with calves rarely surviving into adulthood. Severe injuries caused by ships are common, pollution is high, food sources are depleting rapidly – particularly overfishing of bluefin tuna, and shipping traffic makes hunting difficult.

De momento existe consenso entre los expertos en que dicho comportamiento se debe probablemente al estrés causado por el elevado tráfico marítimo y al empobrecimiento de los bancos de comida.

Estas criaturas de enorme inteligencia podrían estar reconociendo que desde los barcos se capturan grandes cantidades de pescado, estando por ello relacionada la escasez de comida con la actividad humana.

Especies cetáceas como las ballenas asesinas y los delfines se encuentran ya amenazadas en el estrecho, quedando en la zona menos de 50 orcas.

El estrecho de Gibraltar, una ruta marítima principal, está considerada como una de las peores zonas para la supervivencia de las orcas, cuyas crías rara vez llegan a la adultez. Es habitual que las embarcaciones las hieran de gravedad; la contaminación es elevada y sus fuentes de comida se reducen a gran velocidad. En concreto, la sobrepesca del atún rojo y el tráfico marítimo dificulta que puedan cazar.

AIRBUS SHOWCASES DESIGNS FOR EMISSION-FREE PLANES Airbus has revealed three concept designs for the world’s first hydrogen-fuelled commercial aircraft with plans to have them operational by 2035.

If successful, the three aircraft could be used for short to medium-haul flights which currently account for over 80% of all air travel and also produce more CO2 per kilometre travelled than long haul journeys.

Hydrogen fuel has long been considered one of the best ways to move away from fossil fuels in transportation as its only emissions are water vapour. However, large-scale production of hydrogen has historically relied on fossil fuels and therefore overall, not considered a low carbon option, but production is now turning to renewable energy sources to solve this problem.

The first of the three ZEROe aircraft designs could carry 120-200 passengers more than 2000 nautical miles.

The second could carry up to 100 passengers on shorter flights of 1000 nautical miles, such as a short trip from Madrid to Berlin.

And the third and most striking design has a blended-wing body that can hold as many passengers and travel as far as the first design.

Airbus chief executive Guillaume Faury said that hydrogen-fuelled aircraft had “the potential to significantly reduce aviation’s climate impact” and that the concept designs are “a historic moment for the commercial aviation sector”.

The ambitious development plans for these revolutionary designs will have its preliminary results by the middle of 2021, with the final concept selected by 2025.

No obstante, la producción a gran escala del hidrógeno ha dependido históricamente de los combustibles fósiles, de modo que éste no está clasificado como una opción baja en carbono. Para salvar este problema, la producción está girando ahora a las fuentes de energía renovable.

El primero de los diseños de emisión cero transportaría entre 120 y 200 pasajeros a lo largo de más de 2000 millas náuticas.

El segundo podría llevar hasta 100 pasajeros a distancias más cortas de 1000 millas náuticas, por ejemplo un viaje desde Madrid a Berlín.

Y el tercer aparato, el más ambicioso, tiene una estructura única de cuerpo y alas con un volumen de pasajeros y capacidad de desplazamiento iguales a los del primer prototipo.

MAJOR PRIVATE INVESTMENT FIRM DITCHES ITS SHARES IN OIL AND MINING COMPANIES Norway’s largest hedge fund worth more than $90 billion has divested in companies that lobby against climate change action, a move which is thought to be the first of its kind by a major investor.

As part of its new set of climate policies, Storebrand has dumped shares in some of the world’s largest oil and mining giants such as ExxonMobil, Chevron and Rio Tinto, as well as German chemicals company BASF and US electricity supplier Southern Company.

Jan Erik Saugestad, the chief executive of Storebrand said, “Climate change is one the greatest risks facing humanity and lobbying activities which undermine action to solve this crisis are simply unacceptable. The Exxon’s and Chevron’s of the world are holding us back.”

As part of its wider climate policies, the fund will also divest from companies that make more than 5% of their revenues from coal or oil, increase investments in low-carbon companies and connect with energy companies to encourage them to transitions towards renewable energy sources.

According to a report by the independent think tank, InfluenceMap, in the three years following the Paris Climate Agreement, ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron, BP and Total invested over $1 billion on anti-climate change lobbying and advertising.

GIBRALTAR SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS PREMIOS DE SOSTENIBILIDAD DE GIBRALTAR

Communities have been challenged by the UN to solve the world’s toughest sustainability challenges by 2030. Recognising that we all have a role to play in making a difference, the Office of the Commissioner for Sustainable Development and Future Generations launched the Gibraltar Sustainability Awards.

The awards recognise the efforts that seek to address sustainability in our community and beyond.

Although often mistaken to be solely about environmental concerns, sustainability is centred upon quality of life issues that affect both people and our planet. An event night and an ‘active’ webpage (www.futuregenerations.gi ) provide platforms for achieving these goals.

The award categories recognise different thematic or sector entry points. These are informed by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which include themes related to: • Health and wellbeing.

• Biodiversity, climate, environment and nature protection.

• Socio-economic issues incl: alleviating poverty and hunger.

• Addressing gender and social inequalities.

• Circular economy, sustainable consumption.

• Just and inclusive institutions.

• Education, learning and partnerships.

Prof Daniella Tilbury: Commissioner for Sustainable Development and Future Generations highlighted the significance of the Awards: “It is important to celebrate achievement but also to scale-up the adoption of sustainability. By entering the Awards, groups, organizations and individuals are showcasing their efforts but also encouraging others to engage with this important commitment”.

Las Naciones Unidas han requerido a las comunidades del mundo que resuelvan los desafíos medioambientales más exigentes para el año 2030. Admitiendo nuestra parte de responsabilidad, como comunidad, en el objetivo de marcar las diferencias, la Oficina del Comisionado para el Desarrollo Sostenible y las Generaciones Futuras lanzaron los Premios de Sostenibilidad de Gibraltar.

Los premios acreditan aquellos esfuerzos destinados a promover la sostenibilidad en nuestra comunidad y más allá. A menudo percibida de forma errónea como algo concerniente en exclusiva al medioambiente, la sostenibilidad se centra en realidad en cuestiones relativas a la calidad de vida que afectan tanto a las personas como a nuestro planeta. Una velada especial y una página web activa (www.futuregenerations. gi) constituyen las plataformas creadas para alcanzar los objetivos señalados.

Las categorías en las que se dividen estos premios rinden reconocimiento a diferentes ejes temáticos o sectoriales y se ajustan a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible de la ONU como son: • Salud y bienestar.

• Biodiversidad, clima, medioambiente y protección de la naturaleza.

• Cuestiones socio-económicas, incluyendo reducir la pobreza y el hambre.

• Abordar desigualdades de género y sociales.

The Kusuma Trust Gibraltar has shown its support for this amazing initiative as the events main sponsor. The Trust’s long-standing commitment to sustainable development is a value that is shared by the awards and its organisers, and an important standard for the main sponsor of this event.

Over 45 submissions were entered throughout the 12 categories. The finalists were announced on the 8th September and were asked to produce a brief videoclip to assist the judges in their final decisions.

The variety and diversity of activities taking place to address sustainability issues in our local and regional community is incredible. The broad range of initiatives tackle issues such as income and housing poverty, gender equality, sustainable consumption, health and wellbeing, circular economy, conservation and biodiversity loss, climate change, fair wages and sustainable transport, amongst many others.

A panel of experts and professionals with experience in each of the categories will judge the entries. The judges have been invited to review and score each submission. Due diligence will be undertaken to ensure that there are no conflicts of interest and that fairness and consistent evaluation is observed throughout the entire selection process.

The Commissioner will chair the panel which includes experts from outside Gibraltar.

Las organizaciones y quienes a título particular concurren a esta competición muestran con ello el esfuerzo realizado y animan a otros a que se unan a este compromiso tan importante”.

Kusuma Trust Gibraltar ha manifestado su apoyo a esta sobresaliente iniciativa convirtiéndose en principal patrocinadora de la misma.

El compromiso a largo plazo de esta fundación con respecto al desarrollo sostenible es un valor compartido por los premios y sus organizadores y establece un listón importante para el patrocinio del evento.

Resulta asombrosa la variedad y diversidad de las actividades que se están llevando a cabo para abordar cuestiones de sostenibilidad en nuestra comunidad y nuestra zona. Este amplio y diverso conjunto de iniciativas da cabida a temáticas como la renta y la vivienda pobre, la igualdad de género, el consumo sostenible, el cambio climático, el salario justo y el transporte sostenible entre muchas otras.

Un panel de expertos y profesionales con experiencia en cada una de las categorías se encargará de valorar las candidaturas. Los jueves tendrán que evaluar y calificar cada una de las mismas.

Habrá especial diligencia en comprobar que no se dan conflictos de intereses y que el proceso de selección se desarrolla de forma ecuánime, justa y coherente. La comisaria presidirá un panel que incluye a jueces de fuera de Gibraltar.

Los trofeos encargados para conmemorar los premios están siendo realizados por dos artistas locales, Sarah Devincenzi y Manuel Oliva Leon. Se trata obras de enorme belleza, originales y hechas a mano con materiales reciclados.

Having originally trained in the traditional guild craft of signwriting, Sarah now works as an illustrator and artist. Using recycled and repurposed materials, she creates vibrantly coloured collages, mixed media art, papier-mâché vessels and original jewellery. Her work can be viewed at the Gibraltar Arts and Crafts Association in Casemates Square.

Manuel Oliva León has carved his creations for people all over the world, always adopting the practice of minimum material wastage which makes sense not only from a sustainability perspective, but also from a financial one. For this particular commission he has used repurposed wood to carve out each individual trophy. He is happy to be working with a local designer to produce these awards and would like to congratulate all the nominees for their efforts in shaping a more sustainable world.

The Wildlife Park is about to get wilder Jessica Leaper Every October since 2009, the Alameda Wildlife Conservation park (AWCP) has opened its gates to welcome the local community in for a Halloween fundraiser, in aid of various conservation projects or campaigns supported by the park. Sadly, during the pandemic, such events are just not possible. Not to be held back, throughout the pandemic, the AWCP has turned to social media to get their ‘big message’ across to the local community and beyond. This Halloween, the Park will be open to the public as usual and although large events are not possible, there will be Halloween-based activities and more surprises on offer, so keep an eye out for updates on social media!

As part of their Habits for Habitats campaign, launched last year, the AWCP enlisted the support of most of Gibraltar’s schools for the JUST ONE Tree, Green Uniform Day, or ‘Green Day’ (as it became known locally). JUST ONE Tree are a UK-based entity encouraging individuals, schools and businesses to spend just £1 to plant a tree, to restore habitats and ecosystems around the world. The last event in Gibraltar was organised by the AWCP, liaising with local schools to get them involved. The event on Valentine’s Day this year was a great success, raising over £3000 and planting over 3000 trees in Madagascar. This October 16th, Green Uniform Day will take place again in the UK and here in Gibraltar, as many schools have signed up to take part again.

The global pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for us to take care of the planet and to reconnect with nature on a global scale. Habitat and ecosystem restoration is about to become the focus of the United Nation’s next ten year plan. 2021-2030

has been named the UN’s ‘Decade of Ecosystem Restoration,’ highlighting the need for global cooperation to restore degraded and destroyed ecosystems, contributing to efforts to combat climate change, safeguard biodiversity, food security and water supplies.

Rewilding is a form of ecosystem restoration that allows habitats to return to their natural state.

It is already becoming a big deal in the UK & Europe, with entities such as Rewilding Britain and Rewilding Europe, leading the restoration of native habitats and reintroducing native species. So why is this so important and what problems will this solve?

Rewilding promises to reverse centuries of ecological damage. It also aims to reconnect people to nature, providing jobs, opportunities and a new way of living alongside nature, rather than against it.

The AWCP, along with its charity, Wild Animal Conservation Trust (WildACT), have recently been helping to develop an ecosystem restoration project in the Algarve, Portugal. Although still in the early stages of development, the team at the Wildlife Park are working on the strategic planning for the site and species conservation plans for native Iberian species. The project will be looking for interested parties, partners and funders for this exciting project.

In the coming few months, WildACT will be looking to launch its ‘Wild Guardians Campaign,’ offering individuals and companies the chance to offset their carbon whilst safeguarding a ‘Patch of Wild’. El Parque Natural Alameda está a punto de volverse salvaje Jessica Leaper

Cada octubre, desde el año 2009, el Parque Natural Alameda (AWCP) viene abriendo sus puertas a la comunidad local para recaudar fondos en Halloween de cara a contribuir a varios proyectos conservacionistas y a diferentes campañas. Lamentablemente, durante la pandemia no se pueden llevar a cabo este tipo de eventos. Para no perder comba, el AWPC se ha dirigido a las redes sociales para conseguir hacer llegar su “gran mensaje” a la comunidad local y también de puertas hacia fuera. Para este Halloween, el parque abrirá sus puertas al público como de costumbre y aunque no se pueden celebrar eventos de cierta magnitud, sí se realizarán actividades inspiradas en esta festividad y, además, hay preparadas algunas sorpresas. De modo que conviene estar atentos a las redes sociales.

Durante la campaña Hábitos para los habitantes, lanzada el año pasado, la AWCP acumuló el apoyo de la mayor parte de las escuelas de Gibraltar para sumarse a JUST ONE Tree, el Día del Uniforme Verde (o ‘Día Verde’ según se ha llegado a conocer a nivel local). JUST ONE Tree es una entidad británica que anima a los ciudadanos, las escuelas y las empresas a que dediquen una libra a plantar un árbol y restaurar hábitats y ecosistemas del mundo. El último evento celebrado en Gibraltar fue organizado por la AWCP, que consiguió además la colaboración de colegios locales. El evento llevado a cabo este año por el Día de San Valentín constituyó un enorme éxito, recaudando más de 3.000 libras y propiciando la plantación de más de 3000 árboles en Madagascar.

El próximo 16 de octubre se volverá a celebrar el Día del Uniforme Verde en el Reino Unido y en Gibraltar varios colegios se han sumado ya a la iniciativa.

La pandemia global ha puesto de relieve la urgente necesidad de que cuidemos el planeta y nos reconectemos con la naturaleza a escala planetaria.

a punto de convertirse en el eje del plan de las Naciones Unidas para el próximo decenio, 2021-2030, y es por ello que dicho proyecto recibe la denominación de ‘Década de la Restauración de Ecosistemas’, destacando la necesidad de que se produzca una cooperación global para recuperar los ecosistemas que han resultado destruidos y desmejorados, aportando para ello un esfuerzo dirigido a combatir el cambio climático, salvaguardar la biodiversidad, la seguridad alimenticia y el suministro de agua.

El retorno a la vida silvestre constituye una forma de recuperar ecosistemas que permite que los hábitats vuelvan a su estado original. Se ha convertido ya en un concepto relevante en el Reino Unido y Europa, habiendo organizaciones como Rewilding Britain y Rewilding Europe que encabezan la restauración de hábitats autóctonos y la reintroducción de especies endémicas. ¿Y por qué tiene esto tanta importancia y a qué problemas dará solución? El retorno a la vida silvestre promete revertir siglos de daño medioambiental. También se propone reconectar a los ciudadanos con la naturaleza, abriendo oportunidades de trabajo y un nuevo enfoque que anteponga que vivamos junto a la naturaleza en lugar de contra ella.

Junto a su franquicia benéfica Wild Animal Conservation Trust (WildACT), la AWCP ha contribuido recientemente a ayudar a desarrollar un proyecto de restauración del ecosistema en la región portuguesa del Algarve. Transitando aún sus primeras fases de desarrollo, el equipo establecido en el Parque Natural trabaja en la planificación estratégica de la zona así como en la realización de planes de conservación para las especies ibéricas autóctonas. Para consolidar este muy emocionante proyecto se buscará la colaboración de partes interesadas y se intenta conseguir ayuda financiera. En los meses venideros, WildACT contempla lanzar su campaña “Guardianes de la Naturaleza”, ayudando a ciudadanos y empresas en la compensación de de carbono y salvaguardando a la vez el medio ambiente. Every year, thousands of volunteers around the world take part in Clean Up the World Day, a global community-based effort that brings people together to take action to combat waste and plastic pollution in their local areas.

Despite the ongoing restrictions due to the pandemic, this year was no exception. Millions of people from over 100 countries took part, including right here in Gibraltar and in Spain.

Organised locally by the Environment Safety Group (ESG), local organisations together with teams of volunteers came together for the 16th consecutive year to help clean up 14 sites around the Rock, including green spaces, streets, beaches and abandoned areas. Coordinated teams of volunteer divers also tackled vulnerable underwater areas at Rosia Bay. Across the border, regular OTWO collaborators Verdemar Ecologist in Action, together with the Gran Sur Commercial Centre organised a group of 60 volunteers to clean up the Poniente beach in La Linea.

In Algeciras, another group of 50 volunteers cleaned up several different areas in and around the town.

By now, most of us are very much aware of the impact the amount of waste we produce has on the environment, yet the billions of tonnes of rubbish thrown away globally each year continues to grow, most of which can’t be or just isn’t recycled. And although awareness is spreading, littering and fly-tipping is still a huge problem.

Street litter and even landfill refuse travels, usually blown by the wind and ending up in natural areas affecting birds and other wildlife. The most affected area is our oceans, where at least 10% of all our waste ends up, either via rivers, through drains, or directly from the shore.

So, on 19th September and for the second year in a row, OTWO joined the efforts and were charged with the task of cleaning up the small beach at Seven Sisters together with five other volunteers. Accessible only by boat, the nearly 200m long rocky strip of beach is located under Engineer Battery and Alexandra Battery, just a few minutes boat ride from Rosia Bay. Seven Sisters is a popular dive spot, named after the rocky pinnacles protruding from the water around the small bay. Divers often come here to see an abundance of marine life and remnants of Gibraltar’s shipping history.

Cada año, miles de voluntarios de todo el mundo participan en el día Limpiar el Mundo, un esfuerzo conjunto entre comunidades que reúne a la ciudadanía para luchar contra la existencia de residuos y la basura plástica en sus zonas locales.

Pese a las restricciones decretadas a causa de la pandemia, el presente año no ha constituido una excepción. Participaron millones de personas en más de cien países, incluyendo Gibraltar y España.

Organizado a nivel local por el Environment Safety Group (ESG), una serie de asociaciones locales y equipos de voluntarios se reunieron por decimosexto año consecutivo para limpiar 14 zonas diferentes del Peñón, incluyendo zonas verdes, calles, playas y áreas abandonadas. Una serie de grupos coordinados de submarinistas se encargó de llevar a cabo labores de limpieza en zonas marinas vulnerables en Rosia Bay. Al otro lado de la frontera, Verdemar Ecologistas en Acción, entidad que colabora habituañmente con OTWO, organizó junto al centro comercial linense Gran Sur un grupo de 60 voluntarios para limpiar la playa local de Poniente. En Algeciras otro grupo de 50 voluntarios se dedicó a diferentes zonas de la ciudad.

A estas alturas, la mayoría somos conscientes del impacto que la cantidad de residuos que producimos tiene sobre el medioambiente. Aun así, las miles de millones de toneladas de basura que tiramos cada año y a nivel global siguen aumentando, y la mayor parte de ese volumen no se recicla. Y aunque la concienciación medioambiental sigue creciendo, los vertidos, escombros y la basura en las calles siguen constituyendo un enorme problema.

A la basura callejera se añade el transporte de residuos a los vertederos, parte de los cuales son arrastrados por el viento a zonas naturales, perjudicando a los pájaros y otros animales. La parte más afectada corresponde a los océanos, a donde van a parar al menos un diez por ciento de nuestros residuos, bien a través de los ríos, los colectores o directamente de la orilla.

De modo que el 19 de septiembre, y por segundo año consecutivo, OTWO se sumó a la iniciativa y recibió el encargo de limpiar la playita de Seve Sisters con la ayuda de otros cinco voluntarios. Accesible sólo por barco, esta franja de playa rocosa de casi

Although generally untouched by the general public due to its inaccessibility by land, a lot of waste and debris is washed up here from the sea, giving just a small indication of how much litter really ends up in our oceans.

With the help of volunteers from the MOD who kindly agreed to ferry us there, we set off from Rosia Bay in a small RHIB boat, turning right outside of the bay and arriving at the quiet rocky coastline in just a few short minutes.

At first sight, several large items were marring the beautiful bay such as a large plastic container filled with a mystery liquid, wooden pallets, plastic barrels and large chunks of polystyrene but the real damage was evident on closer inspection. Amongst the pebbles, rocks and foliage, were bottles and wrappers of every kind, as well as an unsurmountable number of small pieces of plastic, some no more than a few millimetres in size.

90% of the waste found in the ocean is plastic, a lot of which break down over time into smaller and smaller pieces until they become microplastics. These tiny pieces are ingested by fish and even plankton, working its way up the food chain.

The most common plastic items found in the sea and on shorelines are fishing nets, bottles, plastic bags and food wrappers as well as bottle tops, straws, polystyrene (which disintegrates into ever smaller bits making it near impossible to collect) and cigarette butts. At Seven Sisters, all the usual suspects were there, some easily identifiable lying just on the surface, but much more lodged between rocks or intertwined in the undergrowth and buried in the sand. Just as you thought you had picked it all up, more and more would appear almost out of nowhere, years, perhaps even decades worth litter, both from nearby, or possibly even from thousands of miles away, travelling around our oceans, impervious to decay.

By the end of the day, all of the volunteer’s hard work totalled a massive 12 truckloads of rubbish across all the Gibraltar clean-up sites. In La Linea, volunteers collected an astounding 10,500 cigarette butts and one tonne of rubbish from the Poniente beach, and a total of one hundred bags of waste gathered during the cleanup efforts in Algeciras.

The ESG is compiling a full report on how to improve maintenance of Gibraltar’s natural spaces and better manage litter and waste. The good news is that since

Los submarinistas suelen acudir para contemplar la abundante vida marina o los restos de la historia marítima de Gibraltar.

Aunque habitualmente poco visitada por la gente debido a lo difícil de acceder a ella por tierra firme, el mar trae a esta playa una cantidad significativa de basura y de escombros, lo cual nos da una pequeña idea de toda la basura que ensucia nuestros mares.

Con la ayuda de voluntarios del Ministerio de Defensa que accedieron amablemente a trasladarnos, partimos de Rosia Bay en una pequeña embarcación y giramos a la derecha a la sañida de la bahía para arribar a la tranquila costa rocosa en apenas unos minutos.

A primera vista, varios objetos de gran tamaño ensuciaban la bella bahía: un contenedor de plástico relleno de un líquido misterioso, palets de madera, barriles de plástico y pegotes de poliestereno. Pero fue necesaria una inspección más aproximada para observar el daño real. Entre los chinos, las piedras y el follaje habían botellas y envoltorios de todo tipo así como una cantidad inmesurable de trocitos de plástico, alguno no mayor que unos cuantos milímetros.

El 90% de los residuos que aparecen en el mar son plásticos, muchos de los cuales se van despedazando hasta llegar a ser microplásticos. Estas piezas minúsculas son ingeridas por los peces y hasta por el plancton haciéndose así presentes en la cadena alimenticia.

Los elementos plásticos más comunes que encontramos en el mar y las orillas son redes de pesca, bolsas de plástico y envases de comida así como tapones, pajitas, poliestereno (que se desintegra hasta tamaños que hacen prácticamente imposible recogerlos) y colillas. En Seven Sisters encontramos todos los sospechosos habituales, algunos fáciles de divisar por estar en la superficie en tanto que otros estaban bien ocultos entre las rocas, semihundidos y enterrados en la arena. The issue of waste and the impact it has on the environment is an enormous problem. The vast majority of items we buy are either made of plastic, packaged in plastic, or are single-use. Even though some manufacturers and companies are making great strides towards eradicating plastic and single-use items from their products, unfortunately, many more will continue to use plastic either because it is cheap, or because there are currently few alternatives.

As consumers, we have some control over what we buy. Opting for reusable items, making informed product choices or choosing more sustainable alternatives can help reduce waste. For other products such as clothes or electrical goods (most of which contain plastic), we need to move away from the mass consumer model of simply disposing of and replacing items when we no longer need them. Moving towards a circular model of reusing, repurposing and repairing before rushing out to buy more will greatly reduce our impact on the environment. Failing that, recycling everything we can and disposing of waste properly, is a good start.

Al finalizar la jornada, el esfuerzo de los voluntarios acumuló doce camiones de basura en todo el Peñón. En La Línea, los voluntarios recogieron 10.500 colillas más una tonelada de basura en la playa de Poniente, en tanto que cien bolsas de basura fueron recogidas en los trabajos de limpieza llevados a cabo en Algeciras.

El ESG está elaborando un informe completo sobre cómo mejorar el mantenimiento de los rincones naturales de Gibraltar y cómo gestionar mejor la basura y los residuos. La buena noticia proviene de que desde que comenzaran las campañas de limpieza, la situación ha mejorado, aunque aún es preciso abordar loz problemas de la pequeña basura callejera y los escombros.

El impacto que tienen los residuos sobre el medioambiente constituye un enorme problema. La gran mayoría de los artículos que adquirimos están hechos de plástico, envueltos en este material o son de un solo uso. Aunque algunos fabricantes y empresas vienen dando pasos significativos hacia la erradicación del plástico y los productos de un solo uso, otras muchas compañías seguirán empleando dichl material por ser más económico o porque existen pocas alternativas en la actualidad.

Como consumidores, tenemos algo de control sobre lo que compramos. Optar por artículos reutilizables, eligiendo con información o decidiéndonos por alternativas más sostenibles puede contribuir a reducir el volumen de residuos. Para otros productos como la ropa o los aparatos eléctricos (la mayoría de los cuales contienen plástico), es preciso que nos alejemos de las tendencias de consumo masivo o nos dediquemos simplemente a desechar o reemplazar artículos que ya no necesitemos. Avanzar hacia un modelo circular de reutilización y reparación en lugar de apresurarnos a comprar más reducirá con creces nuestro impacto sobre el medioambiente. De no actuar así, el reciclar todo lo posible y desechar los residuos de forma adecuada constituye un buen comienzo.

It’s often hard to think about the long and complex road our food takes from the ground to our dinner plates and the impacts our diet has on the environment.

The COVID-19 pandemic has raised more than ever the importance of safe and secure food supplies. One area that many of us are not aware of is how the choices made when we visit the supermarket are leading to unprecedent loss of tropical forests.

Tropical deforestation has been accelerating in recent years and this is driven by demand for key products. Just a handful of products are driving this deforestation, so by being conscious of these when shopping we can make a difference: Beef Clearing land for pastures is the leading cause of tropical deforestation. Even in an economy which only imports a small amount of beef from tropical regions, it’s surprising how it can find its way into our diets through ready meals and processed meats.

Soy and soy-based products These are widely seen as the second largest driver of tropical deforestation.[1] You might think we must therefore all be drinking lots of soymilk. But in reality, we don’t consume the majority of this soy directly. The majority of soy that comes into the food chain is used in animal feed.[2] This soy is used to feed cows, pigs, chickens and even the farmed fish we ourselves eat. You might have thought that buying locally reared meat couldn’t possibly have an impact on a forest halfway around the world, unfortunately this is not necessarily true.

Palm and its derivatives This is a leading cause of deforestation in Indonesia and Malaysia. Palm oil, a vegetable oil produced from the palm plant, is one of the most productive vegetable oils. Palm oil and its derivatives find their way into 50 per cent of the packaged products on the shelves of our supermarket.[3] It is impossible to avoid and yet our consumption drives forest clearings of some of the most vital forests.

Cacao and Coffee Land clearing for the production of our favourite pick-me-ups is a growing concern as global demand for these products increases.[4][5] Often this is small scale farming in African nations who are growing increasing amounts to meet our demand for caffeine and chocolate.

La deforestación tropical se ha acelerado en los últimos años y se deriva de la demanda de productos esenciales. Apenas un puñado de productos está causando esta deforestación, de modo que ser conscientes de ello cuanto compramos puede marcar la diferencia.

Vacuno Desbrozar pastos constituye la principal causa de la deforestación. Hasta para una economía cuya importación de carne de vacuno tropical es escasa, resulta sorprendente la presencia de ésta en nuestra dieta a través de comidas precocinadas y procesadas.

Productos de soja y derivados de soja Están considerados como la segunda mayor causa de deforestación tropical. [1] Podría usted concluir que estamos consumiendo cantidades ingentes de leche de soja. Pero en realidad no consumimos la mayor parte de esta soja de forma directa. La mayor parte que entra en nuestra cadena alimenticia lo hace a través de la comida para animales. [2] Esta soja se emplea en la alimentación de vacas, cerdos, gallinas e incluso el pescado de piscifactoría que consumimos. Usted podría haber pensado que la compra de carne explotada localmente no podría impactar de ningún modo en los bosques del mundo, pero desgraciadamente esto no es cierto.

La palma y sus derivados Aquí tenemos un factor detonante de la deforestación en Indonesia y Malasia. El aceite de palma, un aceite de palma derivado de la planta de palma, es uno de los aceites más producidos a nivel global.

Está presente en la mitad de los productos envasados que encontramos en nuestro supermercado. [3] Es imposible evitarlo y nuestro consumo del mismo precipita que se desbrocen algunos de nuestros bosques fundamentales.

Of course, there are other drivers too. Timber, mining and other activity cause deforestation worldwide, but our food choices are driving the largest clearing of forests ever seen.

Tropical forests couldn’t be more important than right now. Limiting climate change to 1.5ºC warming will be impossible without them [6], and yet their destruction is already contributing to global CO2 levels. Current deforestation is releasing more CO2 than the whole of the EU.[7] But we need tropical forests for so many more reasons. If we want to avoid future pandemics, we need to stop burning our forests. Deforestation has been linked to several diseases being spread from malaria[8] to Ebola.[9] A lot of research predicts that future deforestation will increase the likelihood of global pandemics ever further.[10] And this is without even mentioning tropical forest’s roles in weather systems, their importance for biodiversity. Did you know that 25 per cent of all medicines, and 70 per cent of all cancer drugs, have been discovered in the rainforest? [11] Well, what’s the solution?

‘An area the size of Wales’ is frequently used to measure the rate of forest destruction. Through Size of Wales, we are turning that negative use of the country’s size on its head.

Size of Wales provides funding and expertise to local and indigenous communities in tropical regions to support them to secure and sustain their precious forests, grow more trees and establish sustainable livelihoods.

Through education, community engagement and advocacy we also raise awareness in Wales of the importance of tropical forests and trees in tackling climate change. We aim to inspire people to see that they can be part of the solution We support businesses to consider their supply chains and are campaigning for changes to law in the UK that would require supplies of goods to address this deforestation. Size of Wales is developing a toolkit to help businesses evaluate their supply chain, as well as a Zero Deforestation Pledge. We also link businesses with experts.

And we are not alone in this, charities like WWF and RSPB are working hard to address these issues, including creating guides and approaches for consu-

La deforestación actual emite más CO2 que la totalidad de la Unión Europea.

[7] Además, necesitamos de las selvas tropicales por muchos otros motivos. Si pretendemos evitar pandemias futuras debemos dejar de quemar nuestros bosques. La deforestación ha sido relacionada con el esparcimiento de numerosas enfermedades, desde la malaria[8] al ébola[9] . Varias investigaciones coinciden en predecir que más deforestación futura precipitaría una mayor probabilidad de sufrir pandemias a nivel global [10].

Y todo esto sin mencionar siquiera el rol que desempeñan las selvas tropicales en los sistemas meteorológicos y lo fundamentales que resultan para la biodiversidad. ¿Sabía el lector que el 25 por ciento de todas las medicinas y el 70 de los tratamientos contra el cáncer provienen de descubrimientos realizados en la selva tropical? [11] ¿Cuál es la solución?

La magnitud de la destrucción forestal suele compararse con la superficie total del País de Gales. A través de dicha analogía estamos dándole uso y significado negativo al tamaño de ese país.

The concept of sustainable development derived from the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development or the ‘Earth Summit’ (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), encompasses three interconnecting elements: economic, social and environmental.

To achieve true sustainable development requires a considerable advancement in these three components, but one of the most significant obstacles to achieve this goal is the lack of a coherent systemic approach that integrates these three areas to pursue a common objective. In this regard, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (United Nations, 2015) recognises this need by establishing that its objectives and goals “are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental”.

Typically, however, each component is addressed separately and often contradict each other.

Although sustainability is conceived as a trade-off or a balance between the cost and the benefit of each of these three elements, in practice there is a clear imbalance between these objectives. While we defend that the main objective of all economic activity is to maximise (economic) profit, we can assume that the best-case scenario to achieve this is by minimising social and environmental costs.

Maximise within economic spheres, minimise within social and environmental spheres.

Without disregarding the importance of minimising and offsetting the environmental and social costs of economic activities, a true integration of these economic, social and environmental areas requires launching, promoting or supporting economic initiatives that in themselves result in environmental and social benefits, as well as economic. That is to say, that they allow for success in all three elements of development and not just the economic one, resulting in a win-win-win strategy that maximises a joint balance between the three components.

The three principles proposed below; circular economy, low carbon economy and intra and intergenerational equity, are necessary principles for the integration of the three areas of sustainable development, of which policy-making and its various stages of planning, as well economic initiatives and businesses must incorporate from their inception.

El concepto del desarrollo sostenible que deriva de la Conferencia de Naciones Unidas sobre Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo o Cumbre de la Tierra (Río de Janeiro, 1992), engloba tres esferas interconectadas: económica, social y ambiental. La consecución de un verdadero desarrollo sostenible pasa por avanzar de forma integral en las tres componentes y un obstáculo significativo para su logro es la falta de un enfoque sistémico coherente que integre esas tres esferas persiguiendo un objetivo general. En este sentido, la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible (Naciones Unidas, 2015) reconoce esa necesidad al establecer que sus “objetivos y metas son de carácter integrado e indivisible y conjugan las tres dimensiones del desarrollo sostenible: económica, social y ambiental”.

Habitualmente, sin embargo, cada componente se aborda por separado y a menudo entran en contradicción. Sin desdeñar la importancia que tiene la minimización y compensación de los costes ambientales y sociales de las actividades económicas, la verdadera integración de las esferas económica, social y ambiental requiere poner en marcha, promover o apoyar iniciativas económicas que por sí mismas supongan un beneficio ambiental y social, además de económico. Es decir, que permitan ganar en las tres esferas del desarrollo y no solo en la económica, siguiendo una estrategia ganar-ganar-ganar, que maximice el balance conjunto en las tres componentes.

Los tres principios que proponemos a continuación, economía circular, economía baja en carbono y equidad intra e intergeneracional, son principios necesarios para la integración de las tres esferas del desarrollo sostenible, que tanto las políticas y la planificación en sus diversas escalas como las iniciativas económicas y empresariales deben incorporar desde su concepción.

Circular economy: from cradle to cradle The traditional and current approach to economics is based on a linear model of production and growth that follows a process of take-make-consume-dispose. In other words, a one-way system from cradle to grave. This approach views waste entirely as pollution and as a problem that must be moved, deposited in remote places, made to disappear, or reintroduced into the production chain in an anecdotal and ineffective way (downcycling). This model is based on a hypothesis of abundance, availability, ease of obtaining resources, and the cheap disposal of waste, a premise that is now being called into question, not just because of its environmental unsustainability but because it also poses a serious threat to economic development. Despite the ever-increasing environmental criteria being introduced into the life cycle of products in an attempt to reduce or avoid the consumption of energy and raw materials, as well as waste generation, most of this waste and these products end up in landfills or incinerators in no time at all.

For this reason, in their 2002 book “Cradle to Cradle: Redesigning the way we do things,” Michael Braungart and William McDonough proposed that this model be replaced with a circular economy or zero waste approach, which maintains products for as long as possible for added value and excludes waste by retaining resource materials in the economy even when a product has reached the end of its life, so that they can continue to be used profitably over and over again and create more value. From this perspective, waste is viewed as a valuable resource that must become a permanent part of the economy, either as biological or technical nutrients. In other words, a circular economy tries to connect the life cycle of products, affording them a circular motion or from cradle-to-cradle. This approach imitates cycles in nature, working under a system of nutrients and metabolism where waste does not exist (garbage = food), and due to this, is not characterised by its efficiency but by its effectiveness. Furthermore, in nature, cycles tend to be local and decentralised, generating fewer losses.

Eliminating the concept of waste requires intervention not only in waste management but also in production processes as a whole. It means designing

A pesar de la creciente incorporación de criterios ambientales a lo largo de todo el ciclo de vida de los productos, que tratan de reducir o evitar el consumo de materias primas y energía y la generación de residuos, la mayor parte de los residuos y de los propios productos acaba en poco tiempo en vertederos o incineradoras.

Por ello, Michael Braungart y William McDonough propusieron en 2002, en su obra “Cradle to Cradle (De la cuna a la cuna): Rediseñando la forma en que hacemos las cosas”, sustituir ese modelo por el enfoque de la economía circular o de cero residuos, que mantiene el valor añadido de los productos el mayor tiempo posible y excluye los residuos, reteniendo los recursos en la economía cuando un producto ha llegado al final de su vida, de modo que puedan continuar utilizándose con provecho una y otra vez para crear más valor. Desde esta perspectiva, los residuos son concebidos como recursos valiosos que deben entrar a formar parte indefinidamente de la economía, ya sea como nutrientes biológicos o nutrientes técnicos. Es decir, la economía circular trata de cerrar el ciclo de vida de los productos, dando a este un sentido circular o de la cuna a la cuna.

Esta perspectiva imita los ciclos de la naturaleza, que actúa según un sistema de nutrientes y metabolismos en el que no existen los desechos (basura = alimento), y que, debido a ello, no se caracteriza por la eficiencia sino por la efectividad. En la naturaleza, además, los ciclos tienden a ser locales y descentralizados, lo que genera escasas pérdidas.

things (products, packaging, systems) from their inception with a concept of no waste and that products must be composed of biodegradable materials that will later be used as nutrients for the biological metabolism cycle, or be made from technical materials that will stay within the technical metabolism cycle, whilst avoiding contaminating one with the other.

Low carbon economy: towards climate neutrality Moving towards sustainability inevitably requires a progressive decarbonisation of the current energy model, as well as that of the economy as a whole towards a low-carbon economy, both because of the current models dependence on n-renewable energy sources (mainly fossil fuels) and the consequent greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) they produce, which are responsible for climate change. The European Union’s long-term strategy aims to be climate neutral by 2050, which means reducing its net GHG emissions to zero. In the short term, the climate & energy framework proposes a 40% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 compared to 1990, which will require a transition towards energy systems based on efficiency and the use of renewable energies, which in 2030 should account for at least 27% of the total reduction.

However, decarbonisation is not just about improving the efficiency of energy consumption and the use of renewable sources, with the transport sector and the electricity sector the main targets of these measures due to the fact that they are the biggest contributors to GHG emissions. Action is also required on the entire system of production and consumption, with interventions needed in the origin of raw materials and consumables, as well as in their production processes and their destinations.

Furthermore, decarbonisation involves not only reducing CO2 emissions but also utilising carbon fixation and storage, with soil being our main long-term and stable solution, either in the form of living biomass or humus (dark, organic material that forms in soil when matter decays).

The objective of achieving climate neutrality has not been conceived, however, at the cost of our rights or the economy. On the contrary, the European Strategy aims to achieve this objective “through a socially-fair transition in a cost-efficient manner”, that is, by incorporating the three elements of sustainable development. The transformation of the

Economía baja en carbono: hacia la neutralidad climática Avanzar hacia la sostenibilidad requiere ineludiblemente una progresiva descarbonización del modelo energético y de la economía en su conjunto hacia una economía baja en carbono, tanto por la dependencia de fuentes energéticas no renovables del actual modelo, principalmente combustibles fósiles, como por sus consecuentes emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI), responsables del cambio climático. En su Estrategia a largo plazo, la Unión Europea se propone ser climáticamente neutra en 2050, es decir, reducir a cero sus emisiones netas de GEI. En el plazo inmediato, el Marco estratégico en materia de clima y energía propone para 2030 una reducción de un 40% de las emisiones de GEI respecto a 1990, lo que requerirá la transición del sistema energético hacia uno basado en la eficiencia energética y el uso de las energías renovables, que en 2030 deben suponer al menos el 27% del total.

Pero la descarbonización no solo requiere mejorar la eficiencia del consumo energético y el uso de fuentes renovables, con el sector transporte y el sector eléctrico como principales destinatarios de esas medidas por ser las de mayor contribución a las emisiones de GEI. Requiere actuar sobre todo el sistema de producción y consumo, interviniendo tanto en el origen de materias primas e insumos, en los procesos de producción y en el destino de esta.

Además, la descarbonización pasa no solo por reducir las emisiones de CO2 sino también por favorecer su fijación y almacenamiento, siendo el suelo el principal sumidero estable a largo plazo, ya sea en forma de biomasa viva o de humus.

El objetivo de alcanzar la neutralidad climática no se concibe, no obstante, como un coste social y eco-

current economic model towards a low-carbon economy is an opportunity for economic modernisation, the creation of employment, the leading and dominating position that renewable energies and technologies will have in the next decade, the development of rural areas, the improvement of peoples health, the environment and of social justice.

Intra and intergenerational equity Intergenerational equity is at its core, the concept of sustainable development in its most widespread and accepted definition. Derived from the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development: Our Common Future (Brundtland Report, 1987): development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This definition for sustainable development enshrines and acknowledges the responsibilities a generation has towards subsequent ones.

Thus, in general terms, sustainable development requires that the welfare of the present generation cannot be at the expense of the following generation, and therefore, cannot follow a downward trend over time. The next generation can only enjoy the same amount of wellbeing as the present one if they have a similar level of capital stock to produce it with. In other words, sustainability implies living off the interest rather than living off capital.

This paradigm implies restricting further growth in consumption of the planets’ resources, that is, to not reach the limits of where it can recover and introduce recycling processes that allow the biosphere to recuperate, to reprocess waste, and redistribute other environmental goods and services.

But pursuing this intergenerational equity is meaningless if intragenerational equity is not pursued, that is, social equality within the same generation.

Taking the definition from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in the context of conservation and sustainable development initiatives, social equity is a set of practices aimed at addressing and overcoming all social, economic, cultural and political forms of exclusion and iniquity, for which mechanisms are proposed for the redistribution of wealth, resources and opportunities, as well as the construction of real intercultural and gender balanced decision-making.

Equidad intra e intergeneracional La equidad intergeneracional constituye el eje del concepto de desarrollo sostenible en su definición más ampliamente extendida y aceptada, procedente del Informe de la Comisión Mundial sobre el Medio Ambiente y el Desarrollo - Nuestro futuro común (Informe Brundtland, 1987): desarrollo que satisface las necesidades del presente sin comprometer la capacidad de las siguientes generaciones para satisfacer las suyas. Esta definición de desarrollo sostenible consagra el reconocimiento de la responsabilidad que una generación tiene para con las siguientes.

El desarrollo sostenible exige así, en términos generales, que el bienestar de la presente generación no aumente a costa del de las siguientes y que, por tanto, no siga una evolución descendente con el paso del tiempo. La siguiente generación sólo podrá disfrutar de tanto bienestar como la presente si dispone de un stock de capital similar para producirlo.

Expresado en otros términos, la sostenibilidad implica vivir de los intereses en lugar de vivir del capital.

Este paradigma implica restringir el desarrollo a la capacidad de carga del Planeta, es decir, a los límites de los procesos de recuperación y reciclaje que permiten a la biosfera proveer de recursos renovables, asimilar deshechos y suministrar otros bienes y servicios ambientales.

Pero perseguir esta equidad intergeneracional carece de sentido si no se persigue la equidad intrageneracional, es decir, la igualdad en el ámbito social dentro de una misma generación. Tomando la definición de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN), en el contexto de las iniciativas de conservación y desarrollo sostenible, la equidad social es un conjunto de prácticas ten-

dentes a abordar y superar todas las formas sociales, económicas, culturales y políticas de exclusión e iniquidad, para lo que se proponen mecanismos de redistribución de la riqueza, los recursos y las oportunidades, así como la construcción de un verdadero equilibrio intercultural y de género en la toma de decisiones.

Estos tres principios, economía circular, economía baja en carbono y equidad intra e intergeneracional, marcan una orientación que toda política, plan o iniciativa económica debería seguir para contribuir a un desarrollo sostenible. Sin duda, no son los únicas condiciones necesarias, pero sin ellas la sostenibilidad no será posible.

These three principles; circular economy, low-carbon economy and intra- and intergenerational equity, establish a clear path that every economic policy, plan or initiative should follow in order to contribute to sustainable development. They are, of course, not the only necessary conditions, but without them, sustainability will not be possible.

The cave complex of “Bacinete” is located in the municipality of Los Barrios, Cádiz, in the heart of the “Los Alcornocales” National Park. It is a group of rock shelters that are of great significance in the Campo de Gibraltar Region, due to the large number of cave drawings depicted on its walls.

It is placed in a strategic location at the foot of the Sierra del Niño, from where you can see across the Strait of Gibraltar and virtually all the surrounding areas. Settlers have inhabited the area for several millennia and in addition to having visual control of the environment from this location, the land also offered plentiful possibilities with its flora, fauna, rivers and streams and most importantly, a stable climate with different and very marked seasons.

Currently, the area of Los Alcornocales Park is rich in both flora and fauna and going back five thousand years it is evident that the riches on offer here were immeasurable, both inland and along the border areas of the coast. The industrial and cultural development was due to the outside connection of both merchant and warrior seafarers from other settlements who throughout those exchanges always left something of themselves behind with the people of the area.

The Bacinete Complex was identified back in the early 20th century, and after having been studied by one of the pioneers of prehistory, Abbot H. Breuil (Figure 1), was recognized as an important site due the pictorial value reflected in its paintings. Even after almost one hundred years of people passing through this enclave, conducting studies, and carrying out work amongst its walls, it continues to surprise us, due in part to technological advances in new digital photography and processes. Dr. Mónica Solís, an expert in this field, continues to work and study the enclave and its symbols, due to the great importance these depictions that our ancestors left printed on its walls have.

Geologically speaking, the enclave complex is within the area of the ​​ Baetic Mountains which includes the Sierra del Niño as well as the Sierra Blanquilla, Sierra Momia, etc. Within the geological structures of the Campo de Gibraltar, Flysch formation sedimentary layers are most prevalent, formed by folds that are still present throughout the Moroccan Rif Mountains. Over time, wind erosion has

El conjunto rupestre de “Bacinete”, se sitúa en el término municipal de Los Barrios, Cádiz, en pleno corazón del Parque Natural “los Alcornocales”. Se trata de un conjunto de abrigos rupestres de gran importancia en la Comarca del Campo de Gibraltar, por la gran cantidad de grafias representadas en las paredes de los abrigos que lo componen.

Su ubicación en una zona estratégica, en la falda de la Sierra del Niño, desde donde se divisa el Estrecho de Gibraltar, y prácticamente toda las zonas limítrofes. El establecerse en esta zona desde hace ya varios milenios, además de tener un control visual del entorno, las posibilidades que les aportaba la tierra en la que se encontraban, flora, fauna, ríos, arroyos y lo más importante un clima estable con sus diferentes estaciones muy marcadas cada una de ellas.

Actualmente la zona del Parque Los Alcornocales, es rica tanto en flora como en fauna, extrapolémonos cinco mil años atrás, es evidente que las riquezas que se les ofrecían eran innumerables, tanto en el interior con en las zonas limítrofes de la costa. El desarrollo industrial y cultural, por la conexión exterior de navegantes de otros pueblos, tanto comerciantes como pueblos guerreros, todos en ese intercambio siempre dejaron algo de ellos en las gentes de la zona.

El Conjunto de Bacinete, ya conocido desde primeros del siglo XX, y siendo estudiado por uno de los pioneros de la prehistoria el abate H. Breuil (Figura 1), ya marco desde entonces su importancia por el valor pictórico que reflejaban sus pinturas. Incluso en estos casi cien años de paso continuado de personas por dicho enclave, de estudios y trabajos realizados sobre él, aun en la actualidad nos sigue dando sorpresas, divido al avance tecnológico de las nuevas fotografías digitales y sus tratamientos. La Dra Mónica Solís una experta en el tema, sigue en la actualidad trabajando y estudiando el enclave, sus grafias, por el gran potencial que tiene, las representaciones que nuestros ancestros dejaron impresas en sus paredes.

Geológicamente hablando la zona del enclave está incluido, en el área de las Cordilleras Béticas, donde se incluye la Sierra del Niño, además de Sierra Blanquilla, Sierra Momia, etc. En la configuración geológica del Campo de Gibraltar destaca las sedi-

mentarias del tipo Flysch, formado por plegamientos que se continúan en el Rif Marroquí. Las arenas silíceas que forman las rocas areniscas dan lugar a lo largo del tiempo, por causas de las erosiones eólicas, la gran cantidad de abrigos y cavidades que encontramos por toda la zona. Este tipo de abrigos y cavidades es conocido con el nombre de “taffonis”, definido en geomorfología como un abrigo, cavidad o hueco redondeado, con un tamaño de pocas dimensiones a huecos de grandes medidas.

El intentar poder dar una explicación, de por qué algunos de esos dibujos casi abstractos, sin un significado lógico para nosotros, y que para nuestros antepasados marcarían y darían un sentido a todo su vivir diario. Siempre todo el estudio relacionado con el arte rupestre postpaleolítico esquemático, en alguno de sus motivos nos lleva a diferentes interpretaciones, y no pudiendo garantizar con ellas que sean al cien por cien la exacta, como suelo decir “no existe una piedra de Rosetta para poder traducir la simbología rupestre”, aquí cada uno aporta sus ideas sobre algunos de esos signos que para nosotros no tienen un significado a primera vista lógico.

En la siguiente tabla relacionamos algunos de los grafemas más utilizados en este conjunto rupestre, algunos con un significado claro y otros simplemente hay que dejar volar la imaginación, para poder intentar imaginar que se quiso representar. Las representaciones las podemos catalogar en naturalistas, seminaturalistas, semiesquemáticos, esquemáticas e simples trazos muy esquematizados. Cronológicamente hablando cuanto más perfección tenía el dibujo más antiguo es, el ir esquematizando llevo al hombre a la representación del alfabeto. Uno de los motivos más representado en el arte rupestre es el “zoomorfo” (figura animal), dentro de esta tipología podemos encontrarnos aquellos que a simple vista se reconocen o llamados naturalistas, por ejemplo un ciervo con su cornamenta, o el mismo ciervo esquematizado, donde su cuerpo desaparece y se realiza mediante un trazo horizontal y cuatro trazos transversales o patas, así en cualquier tipo de animal (équidos, cápridos, etc.). Una de las figuras que más se representó también en la prehistoria fue el “antropomorfo” o figura humana. Al igual que el zoomorfo paso por las mismas etapas, cuanto más antiguo, más definido, hasta llegar al final de las re-

shaped the siliceous sands that form the sandstone rocks into the large number of shelters and cavities that can be found throughout the area today. These types of shelter or cavities are known as “tafoni” and are defined in geomorphology as a shelter, cavity, or rounded hole, varying in size from small to large cavities.

Attempting to explain why some of these abstract drawings, that have no logical meaning to us, marked and gave meaning to the everyday life of our ancestors is complex. All studies related to schematic post-Paleolithic rock art, always lead to different interpretations as to what each motif could mean and are unable to guarantee their meaning with one hundred percent accuracy. As I often say “there is no Rosetta stone for the translation of cave symbols,” with each contributor imparting their ideas as to what each of the symbols could signify, which, at first glance, have no logical meaning to us.

In the following table we list some of the most used graphemes in this rock complex, some of which have a clear meaning while others require us to use our imagination in an attempt to try and envision what the artist wanted to represent. The depictions can be classified as naturalistic, semi-naturalistic, semi-schematic, schematic and simple highly schematic strokes. Chronologically speaking, the more precise the drawing the older it is, with these drafts eventually leading man to draw early alphabets.

One of the most common motifs in rock art is “zoomorphic” (animal figures), and within this typology we find artwork that is instantly recognisable to us, which is referred to as naturalist. Examples of this are paintings of deer including antlers, or the same outline of a deer where its body is drawn with a simple horizontal line and four crossed lines for legs, also seen in depictions of other types of animal (Equidae, caprids, etc.). Another of the most represented figures in prehistory were “anthropomorphic” or human figures. Like zoomorphic paintings, they developed through similar stages, the older the drawing the more defined, up until the final period of pictorial cave art where they became simple lines. In addition to these zoomorphic and anthropomorphic symbols found in the Bacinete complex, of which similar art can be seen in cavities and rock shelters around the world, they have also identified simple

and parallel lines, simple finger paintings, zigzags, branch-like and scalariform figures etc. (Table 1).

One of the most representative and striking panels in this cave complex is the one found within the main shelter, which is currently in a great state of preservation with some figures containing a very well-preserved red pigment. As we can see in the photograph (Figure 2), the panel is comprised of a large number of motifs and contains a varied typology, including various types of zoomorphic figures: cervids, caprids, equids, and canids, of which a deer with large antlers stands out, drawing the attention of onlookers when first looking at the panel. Additionally, there are several anthropomorphic figures with varying degrees of detail, some with a weapon in hand such as bows and axes and several figures of male and female pairs possibly in a dance scene. Within these there are also several scenes of hunting and shepherding. Furthermore, there are various single strokes, single or groupings of dot art, pectiniform (comb-shaped figures), quadrangular shapes and some other figures that are difficult to interpret.

Most of the rock shelters face towards the south.

In the rest of the rock shelters that make up this extraordinary enclave you can find different motifs distributed throughout almost all the cavities near the main shelter; zoomorphic, anthropomorphic, pinpoints, lines, etc., in some of the shelters there are varying amounts of simple strokes or groupings of dots. (Figure 4).

presentaciones pictóricas en cuevas y abrigos, convirtiéndose en una simple trazo. Además de estas grafias de zoomorfos y antropomorfos, que se repiten por todas las cavidades y abrigos del mundo, en el enclave de Bacinete, se identifican, trazos simples y paralelos, digitaciones simples o pareadas, signos en zigzag, ramiformes, escaleriformes, etc. (Tabla 1).

Uno de los paneles más representativos y más llamativos en este conjunto rupestre es el panel del abrigo principal, que actualmente se conserva con gran calidad, manteniéndose aun en algunas figuras el pigmento rojo muy bien conservado. En este panel tal como podemos ver en la fotografía (Figura 2), muestra una gran cantidad de motivos, de muy variada tipología, zoomorfos de varios tipos: cérvidos, cápridos, équidos, y canidos, destacando un cérvido con una gran cornamenta, que te atrae nada más mirar el panel, además de varios antropomorfos con más o menos detalles, alguno incluso con un arma en la mano, arcos y hachas, varias figuras en parejas masculinas y femeninas posiblemente en una escena de danza. En todo este conjunto se observan varias escenas de caza y pastoreo. Además de varios trazos sueltos, puntiformes simples o en agrupaciones, pectiniforme (figuras en forma de peine), cuadrangulares y algunas figuras de difícil interpretación.

La orientación prioritaria en la mayoría de los abrigos es hacia el sur. En el resto de abrigos que conforman este gran enclave, se pueden encontrar diferentes motivos repartidos en casi todas las cavidades próximas al abrigo principal, zoomorfos, antropomorfos, puntiformes, trazos, etc., en mayor o menor número, en algunos de los abrigos simples trazos o agrupaciones de puntos. (Figura 4).

Es de suponer por la gran cantidad de motivos representados y los materiales líticos encontrados en superficie por la zona, hace pensar, el potencial del enclave. Un asentamiento continuado durante un gran periodo de tiempo, donde las personas establecidas en la zona visito continuamente de varias etapas de la prehistoria. En las zonas aledañas muy próximas al conjunto rocoso que forma este enclave, encontramos gran cantidad de “tumbas antropomorfas”, (Figura 5). Tumbas excavadas en las placas de rocas areniscas, en alguna de ellas se encuentran restos de sus tapaderas también formadas por la-

A settlement that continued there over a long period of time, where people who had settled in the area would continuously visit throughout various periods of prehistory. In the surrounding areas, close by to the rocky complex that forms this enclave, a large number of “anthropomorphic tombs” can be found (Figure 5). Tombs excavated into the sandstone rock plates, some with remnants of lids also formed from stone slabs in the shape of the tombs themselves.

The likelihood that these types of tombs are related to prehistoric cave enclaves is probable, due to the proximity and location within the vicinity of many of the rock shelters in the province. We can assume that they were contemporaries of the same time some of these paintings were made, likely the later schematic art period of prehistory.

Like this wonderful enclave, there are a large number of cave sites in the province of Cádiz, containing a greater or lesser number of pictorial representations. Taking into account the complex of Bacinete, together with the well-known Tajo de las Figuras, Conjunto de Palomas, the spectacular Cueva del Moro with its engravings of Equidae as well as and many more enclaves, makes the list of sites too long to include. The main cave sites in our province include symbols and artwork that are a national and international benchmark. As already mentioned, the magnificent engravings of Equidae in the Cueva del Moro in Tarifa, discovered by Lothar Bergmann; the hand stencils of the Tajo de las Abejeras in Castellar de la Frontera, discovered by S. The great importance of this prehistoric rock art inspires us to promote it, raise awareness and increase peoples knowledge to protect it from heartless individuals, who due to vandalism or simply ignorance, write and paint on top of paintings that, for a very long time, have remained unperturbed to the present day.

Es posible suponer que eran coetáneos de la época de las pinturas, no a todos los periodos, pero si a las ultimas facetas esquemáticas de la prehistoria.

Al igual que este maravilloso enclave, en la provincia de Cádiz, existen una gran de cantidad de yacimientos rupestres con mayor o menos número de representaciones pictóricas. Considerando el enclave de Bacinete, junto al conocido Tajo de las Figuras, Conjunto de Palomas, la espectacular Cueva del Moro por sus grabados de équidos, y muchos más enclaves que sería largo de enumerar. Los principales yacimientos rupestres de nuestra provincia, los cuales aportan un referente a nivel nacional e internacional por las grafias en ellos representadas.

Como he mencionado los magníficos grabados de équidos de la cueva del Moro, Tarifa, descubierta por Lothar Bergmann, las manos aerografiadas del Tajo de las Abejeras, Castellar de la Frontera, descubiertas por S. Algarín, o las ultimas grafias de manos en el conjunto de Palomas, halladas en 2017 por S. Escalona y H.A. Mira. Y las espectaculares escenas de aves en el Tajo de las Figuras, representaciones de las aves en sus migraciones, vista por nuestros a centros y pintadas en las cuevas de la zona.

La gran importancia de este material pictórico nos lleva a difundirlo, darlo a conocer, para que su conocimiento pueda protegerlo, de los desalmados que por vandalismo, o simplemente por desconocimiento, escriben y pintan encima de estas pinturas, que durante tanto tiempo han permanecido imperturbables hasta nuestros días.

The more dangerous the profession, the more superstitious those who practice it become. Gambling with your life every day, flirting with fate, leads to the ancient attempt to defend oneself from the capricious forces of nature or to shield oneself from the Grim Reaper. Although, to do this, rituals, spells, or practices far from scientific fact or the rule of reason are used.

Sailors are a good example of this. The insecurity caused by being at the whim of waves, gales, and storms, losing their way back home, or being driven by the winds towards unknown seas, must cause much unease even in the most experienced sailors. Hence the profusion of superstitions at sea. Even nowadays for example, you should not whistle on deck, as this could enrage Aeolus and unleash the full force of the winds. When building ships, shipowners would sometimes place a coin under the mainmast, reminiscent of a kind of tribute to Charon, the boatman who leads the dead to the kingdom of Hades. We all know that women were not traditionally welcome on ships, however, if they undressed at the bow during a storm, they were able to calm the waters, hence why the female form was often used as figureheads to appease the gods of the sea. If dolphins swim next to the bow, it is a sign of good luck.

Opening an umbrella on board, is quite the opposite. The proper way to sleep on a boat so as not to attract bad luck is head to bow and stepping onto or leaving a boat should be with the right foot first. There are hundreds of ways to ward off bad luck on a boat, listing them all would be an overwhelming task.

Within the methods of self-protection used by sailors it is also the custom, although one that is currently in decline, to paint eyes on the bows of boats. Although this is a typical tradition in the Mediterranean, there are also variants in places as far away as Vietnam, Bali and in some areas of the eastern Pacific. However, most researchers agree that it is a phenomenon that originated in Mare Nostrum, spread by the Phoenicians or Greeks and, later, exported over the centuries through trade to other areas of the globe.

Furthermore, with the blessing of “Good Horus”, it is possible that the origin of this prac-

Cuanto más peligrosa es una profesión humana, más supersticiosos se vuelven quienes la practican. Jugarse la vida a diario, coquetear con el azar, conlleva el ancestral intento de defenderse de las caprichosas fuerzas de la Naturaleza o de blindarse frente a la Parca. Aunque para ello se usen rituales, hechizos o prácticas alejadas del pensamiento científico o del imperio de la razón.

Los marinos son un buen ejemplo de ello. La inseguridad que provoca estar al pairo de olas, galernas y tempestades, de perder la ruta de vuelta a casa, o de ser empujados por los vientos hacia mares desconocidos, debe provocar mucho desasosiego aun en los más experimentados navegantes. De ahí la profusión de supersticiones en la mar. Por ejemplo, en cubierta —aún hoy— no se debe silbar, pues eso podría enfurecer a Eolo y desatar la fuerza de los vientos. A veces los armadores, al construir las naves, colocaban una moneda bajo el palo mayor, algo que recuerda una especie de tributo a Caronte, el barquero que conduce a los muertos al reino de Hades. Todos sabemos que las mujeres no solían ser tradicionalmente bienvenidas en los barcos, sin embargo, si se desnudaban en la proa en una tormenta, eran capaces de calmar las aguas, de ahí que en los mascarones de proa se usen mucho esculturas femeninas para apaciguar a los dioses del mar. Si los delfines nadan junto a la proa, es señal de buena suerte, abrir un paraguas a bordo, todo lo contrario.

La forma adecuada de dormir en un barco para no atraer la mala suerte es con a cabeza a proa y de entrar y salir del barco es con el pie derecho por delante. Son centenares las formas de ahuyentar el mal fario en un barco, enumerarlas todas sería una tarea abrumadora.

Todo indica que, dentro de esas medidas de autoprotección de los marineros se encuentra la costumbre, actualmente en declive, de pintar ojos en la proa de las embarcaciones. Aunque es una tradición muy típica de todo el Mediterráneo, también hay variantes en lugares tan lejanos como Vietnam, Bali o algunas zonas concretas del Pacífico oriental. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los investigadores coinciden en que son un fenómeno puramente originario del Mare Nostrum, extendido por fenicios o griegos y, posteriormente, exportado a través del comercio y los siglos a otras zonas del planeta.

tice has once again, a lot to do with the Strait of Gibraltar and the cultures that inhabited and visited the area. In the Campo-Gibraltarian rock-shelters that have cave paintings, it is not uncommon to find depictions of two large eyes that seem to stare at you, nor is it rare to find cylindrical idols whose only prominent features are two engraved eyes with some decoration around them. Perhaps this practice, together with a fear of crossing the Strait, resulted in the Hellenistic tradition that identified our lands as the abode of the Gorgons, three female monsters, half human, half serpent, who could kill any living being that crossed their path, be it person or monster, with just their gaze.

They are cited by classical authors in the style of Homer’s the Odyssey — Hesiod and Ovid.

And once again, our region was the stage for a mythological battle involving another of Greek mythology’s favourite legendary heroes, Perseus.

Even today, his popularity has made him the star of many Hollywood productions and even some video games. Perseus was a demigod, son of Zeus and the beautiful mortal Danae. He was sent by order of his king to the ends of the known world in the far west to behead Medusa, the only one of the three Gorgon that was mortal. This monster possessed serpentine hair and a gaze so penetrating that it turned anyone who returned it to stone. Even after death she maintained her power, making whoever possessed her head practically invincible.

After killing Medusa with an accurate blow from his great sword, which was guided and aimed by Perseus’s protector – the goddess Athena, the hero began his journey home. Then, on his return to Greece, he found Andromeda in chains, left as a sacrifice to be devoured by a sea monster to calm Poseidon’s rage, the god of the seas. If you will allow me the spoiler, the demigod did not hesitate to confront the Kraken, showing it Medusa’s head and turning it into stone. Perseus and Andromeda were married and had seven children, one of whom was named Gorgophone in honour of the being that saved his beloved’s life.

Those powerful eyes became a kind of ubiquitous protective amulet. They were incorporated into Greek shields and the prows of Hellenic

Aún más, con el permiso del bueno de Horus, es bien posible que el origen de esta práctica tenga mucho que ver, una vez más, con el Estrecho de Gibraltar y las culturas que lo habitaron y visitaron. En los abrigos campogibraltareños con pinturas rupestres, no es infrecuente encontrar dos grandes ojos que parecen observarte fijamente, como tampoco es raro encontrar en la provincia ídolos cilíndricos en los que únicamente destacan dos ojos grabados y cierta ornamentación a su alrededor. Quizá esta práctica, unida al terror que provocaba el paso del Estrecho, provocó que la tradición helenística identificara a nuestra tierra con la morada de las Górgonas, tres engendros femeninos, mitad antropomorfos, mitad serpientes, que podían matar únicamente con su mirada a cualquier ser vivo, persona o monstruo, que se cruzase en su camino. Son citadas por autores clásicos de la talla de Homero —en la Odisea—, de Hesíodo o de Ovidio.

Así que, de nuevo, nuestra región fue el escenario de una batalla mitológica en la que participaría otro de los héroes de leyenda favoritos del mundo griego, Perseo. Hoy sigue siendo tan popular que es protagonista de no pocas producciones de Hollywood e incluso de algunos videojuegos. Perseo fue un semidiós, hijo de Zeus y de la bella mortal Dánae, que fue enviado por orden de su rey, a los confines del mundo conocido, al lejano occidente, para hacerse con la cabeza de Medusa, la única mortal de las tres Górgonas. Este monstruo poseía una cabellera de serpientes y una mirada tan penetrante, que convertía en piedra a quien la alcanzase. Incluso después de muerta mantenía su poder, convirtiendo al poseedor de su cabeza en poco menos que invencible.

Tras matar a Medusa de un certero mandoble guiado, eso sí, por la puntería de la diosa Atenea, protectora de Perseo, el héroe tomó el camino a casa. Y así fue, a su vuelta a Grecia, encontró a Andrómeda encadenada, entregada en sacrificio para que un monstruo marino la devorase y poder calmar la ira de Poseidón, el dios de los mares. Si se me permite el spoiler, el semidiós no dudó en enfrentarse al Kraken, mostrándole la cabeza de Medusa y quedó convertido en piedra para los restos. Perseo y Andrómeda se casaron y tuvieron siete hijos, una de los cuales se llamó Gorgófone en honor de quién salvó la vida de su amada.

It is possible to see them even today, painted on or physically built into the prow of fishing fleets from both sides of the Strait, forever recalling the mythical encounter between Medusa and Perseus, between the people of the inner Mediterranean and those of the distant West, our ancestors.

Sailors accepted the duality of the Medusa myth, on one side terrifying and on the other as a protector. That is why they painted them, both to scare away sea monsters, and to help them navigate their way through the dangers of the sea and find their way home. Painting eyes on to a ship is like giving them a soul, and in a way giving them life. That is why, the ritual of “opening” the boats eyes is still preserved in some villages, converting them from a lifeless painting to a fundamental navigational aid, as much as, or even more so, than a compass or modern GPS. The pity is, that aside from cultural initiatives trying to rescue this symbol, such as those being undertaken on the Malaga coast; the modernisation of boats and the disappearance of traditional riverside carpentry means that the protective eye is becoming a rarity in areas such as Barbate, Ayamonte and the Moroccan Mediterranean coast. Similarly, this is happening in Italy, Greece, and Turkey. The sole exception is Malta, where they are still a true national symbol. This essential part of our history, our culture and our identity are in danger of becoming extinct, both in the Mediterranean, and in the Campo de Gibraltar and the Strait. We are still in time to save it.

Esos poderosos ojos autóctonos, acabaron convertidos en una especie de ubicuo amuleto protector. Se incorporaron a los escudos griegos y a las proas de los barcos helenos. Aún hoy, es posible verlas, pintadas o corpóreas, en la proa de barcos de flotas de pesca de ambos lados del Estrecho, recordando para siempre el mítico episodio del encuentro entre Medusa y Perseo, entre los pueblos del interior del Mediterráneo y los del lejano occidente, nuestros antepasados.

Los marinos aceptaron la dualidad del mito de Medusa, con una vertiente terrorífica sumada a otra protectora. Por eso los pintaban, tanto para ahuyentar a los monstruos marinos, como para que supieran sortear los peligros del mar y encontrar el camino a casa.

Pintarle ojos a un barco es como dotarlos de alma, en cierto modo, es darles vida. Por eso aún se conservan en algunos pueblos los rituales para «abrir» los ojos de las embarcaciones y trocarlos de una pintura sin vida a una ayuda fundamental para la navegación, tanto o más que la brújula o el moderno GPS. La pena es que, salvo iniciativas culturales de rescate del símbolo como las emprendidas en la costa malagueña; con la modernización de las embarcaciones y la desaparición de las carpinterías de ribera tradicionales, el ojo protector se está convirtiendo en una rareza en zonas como Barbate, Ayamonte o la costa mediterránea marroquí. Algo parecido sucede en Italia, Grecia y Turquía. Con la sola excepción de Malta, donde son una auténtica enseña nacional, está en peligro de extinción una parte esencial de nuestra historia, nuestra cultura y nuestra identidad, tanto la mediterránea, como la campogibraltareña y estrechense.

Aún estamos a tiempo de que no suceda.

COASTEERING IN GIBRALTAR What is Coasteering?

The activity of coasteering involves making you way along the coastline usually along steep cliffs and rocky outcrops. We use a variety of techniques that may include other outdoor activities such as walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, abseiling (rappelling), and swimming.

Where do we meet?

We meet at the IN2ADVENTURES Sandy Bay Activity centre where we can start our activity enjoying our beautiful beach. We like our clients to use public transport if possible, in order to reduce our carbon footprint. Please get in touch if you need some advice.

What kind of equipment do you provide?

We provide all the technical equipment you will need for this activity; this is routinely inspected and is UIAA approved (Union International de Associaciones Alpinistas). You will be given a wet suit, safety helmet and climbing harness. Before we start, we will give all participants a comprehensive safety brief and how to use the equipment correctly.

How fit do I need to be?

An average level of mobility will help you enjoy the day. But this activity is easily tailored to any fitness level.

What is the minimum age that can come coasteering?

We recommend that children should be 9 or over for this activity. Please let us know if any of the participants are weak or non-swimmers.

What should I bring?

Old trainers that will get wet. Change of clothes.

Towel. Sun Cream. Water.

If you have long hair, please tie it up but remember that you will need to put a helmet on.

Avoid loose or dangly bits.

Can I bring my own kit and equipment?

Yes, but it will be inspected by the instructor to make sure it is serviceable and correct.

The standard route is as follows: Start at the activity center, receive equipment induction and safety briefs. Walk a few hundred meters to the north end of the beach and climb the steps to the old cable platform where the group will abseil into the shoreline.

Follow the shoreline north towards Black Strap cove by scrambling over rocks swimming between pools and generally making progress. Continue north past the cove to ‘Frieda’ (the jump) this is an optional jump for those brave enough to do it.

After jumping climb up to the Zip line launch point.

Zoom along our amazing 100m line and arrive at the south end of Black Strap Cove.

At this point we make our way back to the Activity Centre, depending on time left and prevailing conditions either by wild swimming or walking or a combination of both.

What if the weather is bad?

We can usually continue regardless of the weather, only a really wild storm will stop us! Don’t worry we will let you know if we can go ahead or not. Your safety is our primary concern.

Do sessions ever get cancelled?

Whilst every attempt is made to ensure that activities go ahead, we will notify the client of cancellation as soon as practicable where we believe on reasonable grounds that cancellation is necessary due to dangerous and/or unsuitable conditions for the activity. We reserve the right to cancel, reschedule or amend any activity/trip due to safety reasons such as adverse weather or operating conditions. If we cancel your activity you will receive a full refund of any payments made.

Our instructors reserve the right to ask clients to leave if they are compromising the safety or enjoyment of the group.

Can I Cancel?

Of course, but an advance non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your booking.

COASTEERING EN GIBRALTAR ¿Qué es Coastering?

La actividad deportiva de Coastering, conlleva aventurarse en un recorrido costero combinando acantilados escarpados y formaciones rocosas. Utilizamos una variedad de técnicas que pueden incluir diversas actividades al aire libre como travesía, escalada, saltos de altura, rápel, natación y buceo. ¿Dónde nos reunimos?

Nos congregamos en el centro de actividad de IN2ADVENTURES Sandy Bay, donde comenzamos nuestra actividad disfrutando de la hermosa playa.

Nos complace que nuestros clientes - de ser posibles- utilicen el transporte público, con el fin de reducir nuestra huella de carbono. Contacte con nosotros si necesita consejo sobre ello. ¿Qué tipo de equipo proporcionan?

Facilitamos todo el equipo técnico que necesitará para practicar el coastering. Un instrumental que se inspecciona de forma rutinaria y que está aprobado por la UIAA (Unión Internacional de Asociaciones Alpinistas). Se le suministrará un traje de neopreno, casco de seguridad y arnés de escalada. Antes de empezar, daremos a todos los participantes instrucciones completas de seguridad y de cómo utilizar el equipo correctamente. ¿Qué forma física debo tener?

Un nivel medio de movilidad le ayudará a disfrutar del día. Pero esta actividad se adapta fácilmente a cualquier condición física. ¿Cuál es la edad mínima para practicar coastering?

Recomendamos que los niños hayan cumplido los nueve años o más para esta actividad. Si alguno de los participantes es más enclenque o no sabe nadar, rogamos que nos lo hagan saber. ¿Qué debo llevar?

Viejas zapatillas de deporte, porque se mojarán.

Muda de ropa, toalla, protector solar y agua.

Si tiene el pelo largo, por favor recójalo, recordándole que debe llevar casco. No dejar ningún mechón ni prenda que incomode o estorbe. ¿Puedo llevar mi propio equipo?

Sí, pero será inspeccionado por el instructor para asegurarse de que es útil y se encuentra en perfectas condiciones.

ILa ruta estándar es la siguiente: Nos reunimos en el centro de actividades, donde se

imparte la información de seguridad sobre el equipo y se le coloca a cada participante. Se inicia la travesía de unos cientos de metros hacia el extremo norte de la playa y subimos las escaleras hacia la antigua plataforma de cable, donde el grupo realizará rápel hasta la costa.

Avanzamos por la costa hacia el norte, dirigiéndonos a la cala Black Strap, escalando sobre rocas, nadando entre piscinas y progresando por la ruta de aventura. Seguimos hacia el norte pasando la cala hasta ‘Frieda’, donde los más valientes podrán realizar un salto de altura.

Después de saltar, subiremos hasta el punto de lanzamiento de la tirolina. Entonces, enfilaremos los cien metros de tirolina hasta llegar al extremo sur de Black Strap Cove.

En este punto volvemos al Centro de Actividades, dependiendo del tiempo que quede y de las condiciones en las que se encuentre el grupo, bien por la natación salvaje o la caminata o por la combinación de ambas. ¿Y si el tiempo es malo?

Por lo general podemos continuar independientemente del clima, ¡sólo una tormenta realmente salvaje nos detendrá! No se preocupes, le avisaremos si podemos seguir adelante o no. Su seguridad es nuestra principal preocupación. ¿Alguna vez se cancelan las sesiones?

Se hace todo lo posible para garantizar que las actividades salgan adelante, aunque notificaremos al cliente la cancelación tan pronto como sea posible, cuando creamos por motivos razonables la necesidad de suspensión debido a condiciones peligrosas y / o inadecuadas para la actividad. Nos reservamos el derecho de cancelar, reprogramar o modificar cualquier actividad/viaje por razones de seguridad como condiciones climáticas adversas o condiciones de funcionamiento. Olga and Cayetano are the proud owners of the only “Tabanco” in the Campo de Gibraltar. This type of establishment, which originated in Jerez de la Frontera, united the concepts of tavern and winery, allowing people to buy wine by the cask whilst also enjoying wine tastings accompanied by typical tapas or pinchos, all under the same roof.

This is still the experience on offer when you visit the Tabanco Sacristía. Located on Calle Hércules, in the heart of La Línea de la Concepción, the best “fortified wines” (Sherry) are paired with a selection of cold meats, cheeses, salted fish from Barbate and prized oysters from the estuaries of the Bay of Cádiz. To accompany these flavour explosions, they also hold flamenco performances, jazz, and art exhibitions, making Tabanco Sacristía a unique cultural and gastronomic experience in the area.

Olga y Cayetano se enorgullecen de ser los propietarios del único “Tabanco” en el Campo de Gibraltar, este tipo de establecimientos originario de Jerez de la Frontera y que unía los conceptos de taberna y despacho de vinos, por lo que en el mismo lugar se podía comprar vino a granel y al mismo tiempo degustarlos acompañados de las típicas tapitas o pinchos.

Y esto es lo que nos ofrece la experiencia de visitar al Tabanco Sacristía, ubicado en la calle Hércules, en pleno centro de La Línea de la Concepción, maridar los mejores “vinos generosos” (Sherry) junto a una selección de embutidos, quesos, salazones de Barbate y las preciadas ostras de los esteros de la Bahía de Cádiz. Y para acompañar esta explosión de sensaciones también organizan actuaciones de flamenco, jazz, exposiciones de arte convirtiendo a Tabanco Sacristía en una propuesta gastronómica cultural inusual en la zona.
