Director of School SPORT

Paul Braddock is the Director of Sport at Ōtūmoetai College. He is enthusiastic about his role, and he encourages all of our students to participate. He doesn’t care whether they are extremely competitive, or extremely social –he just loves to see them involved, says Abbie Johnston.

Paul is always giving of his time, with many weekends and evenings finding Paul on the side- line of any sport our students are taking part in. Thirty five sporting codes were offered and played by our students in 2019 with the number of students participating in organised sport being 39% of the school roll. Made up of 40% boys and 37% girls. We have 16 teachers involved with coaching teams as well as 12

Every year (before college resumes) he will be at the first beach volleyball tournament of the year and away at a national tournament with our junior volleyballers at the end of the year.

Paul has high standards for the delivery of our sports programmes, he is always punctual with timeframes and committed to good communication with students and parents around competitions and tournaments, both locally, nationally and internationally. teams both in school hours and on weekends with Ōtūmoetai College entering teams into New Zealand and Bay of Plenty Sports events. We have had Rugby, Netball and Volleyball teams experience international travel playing Volleyball in America, Australia with He is widely recognised within the Ōtūmoetai community, not only byour student families but also whanau and students from Ōtūmoetai Intermediate where Paul instigated, and continues to run, a weekly sports programme. He has done this over the course of many years. This ensures seamless transition when students enter College, they already have a familiar face and look forward to continuing their sport journey.

All four of Paul’s children have come through Ōtūmoetai College as students, and two of his children now teach here, Mary-Ann and Adam. Our College has had the benefit of many Braddock coaches throughout the years –Paul coached our First XV for at least ten years before he was even employed here, teaming up with the likes of Tony Gadsbey, John Stanley and Mike Ward along the way. Paul’s wife has coached basketball, and their children have coached rugby netball,

volleyball, basketball. Mountain Biking, Netball, Rugby and Netball touring Australia and the Cook Islands.

Ōtūmoetai College sport is proud of our numerous numbers of New Zealand representative players. We have past students who represented NZ in Athletics, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Rugby, Cricket, Cycling, Downhill
