46th Annual Hope Gala

On August 22, the American Cancer Society hosted their 46th annual Hope Gala to raise money to fund groundbreaking cancer research, support education and prevention efforts and provide information and critical services to people with cancer through the Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge. The sold-out, black-tie event was chaired by Lauren and Jordan DeMoss and kicked off with a rollicking cocktail hour followed by dinner and a live auction. This year’s program honored cancer survivors Jay Ezelle, Heidi Hallman, Patti Callahan Henry and Doug McCrary and the memory of John Reidinger and his wife Whitney. The night concluded with an after-party featuring a DJ and dancing. OTMJ

Vestavia Hills Resident Kelley Brown to Headline Legacy League’s September 24 Luncheon

S

amford University Legacy League will kick off its second century of service and new program year at its annual Fall Luncheon with Kelley Brown, a Beeson Divinity School graduate and writer for Proverbs 31’s First 5 app. A founding member and current board member of Storytellers Live, Kelley has been a writer, speaker and Bible teacher for over 25 years. She and her husband, Scott, live in Vestavia Hills and have four children. Two of their daughters joined their family through international adoption—a story that continues to shape their lives with gratitude and perspective.

Founded in 1925, the Legacy League has awarded over $2.5 million in scholarships to assist students who have faced obstacles including homelessness, inner city violence, death or disability of a parent, abandonment, parental addiction and incarceration and the sacrifices of full-time ministry. In addition to providing generous scholarships, the organization provides extra measures of

support and practical assistance for the students in its cohort.

CENTENNIAL WEEKEND KICKS OFF WITH GALA BENEFITTING MISS SIM’S GARDEN

O

n October 15 at City Hall Plaza and Rosewood Hall, community leaders, residents and businesses will celebrate 100 years of Homewood in turn-of-thecentury glam at the Homewood Centennial Gala. A pre-party on the SoHo Plaza will feature a red-carpet welcome, DJ Chris Sarris and a celebrity guest will be emceeing, Homewood High School photography students will act as paparazzi, and the Homewood Pops will serenade guests into Rosewood Hall for a fun-filled soireé with dinner served by Real and Rosemary. The ballroom will be filled with Homewood memorabilia; a Live and Silent Auction will feature one-of-a-kind items featuring Homewood businesses, artists, restaurants, services and more. Guests can keep the party going at the SoHo Social afterparty.

Proceeds from this inaugural gala will help fund capital improvements to reimagine Miss Sims Garden Botanical Park as a “Demonstration Garden for Residential Landscape Design” and fully realize Miss Sims’ vision of a teaching garden. Miss Sims Garden Botanical Park was the bequest of Catherine Anville Sims, aka “The Plant Lady,” to the City of Homewood on her death at 91 in 2006. The garden encompasses five lots between 908 Highland Road and 913 Irving Road and features antique roses; hydrangeas; fig, blueberry, persimmon and apple trees and dedicated pollinator and ozone-monitoring areas.

Boy Scout Troop 320, based at Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church, held an Eagle Court of Honor on August 31, 2026, to recognize its three newest Eagle Scouts. Since its beginning, Troop 320 has awarded over 300 young men the rank of Eagle Scout. The new Eagle Scouts and their Eagle Service Projects: JT Graves, the son of Mary Frances and the late Colonel David Lee Graves, built a Gaga ball pit at Mountain Brook Community Church. His Scouting career included induction into the Order of Arrow, 59 camping nights, 120 backpacking miles, 80 hiking miles and 71 paddling miles.

JT also completed three high adventure trips to Philmont Scout Ranch, Northern Tier and Summit-Bechtel Marksmanship.

Jacob Plyler, the son of Kristine and Matt Plyler, renovated the pathway to the Outdoor Chapel at Brookwood Baptist Church. His scouting career included 39 camping nights, 100 hiking/backpacking miles and 98 paddling miles. He completed two high adventure trips to Northern Tier and Philmont Scout Ranch.

Suttyn Koretzky, the son of Brynee and Marc Koretzky, designed and built a wooden, multi-bicycle rack for the parking lot at Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church, which is the chartered organization for Troop 320. His Scouting career includes 55 camping nights, 48 hiking/backpacking/cycling miles and 109 paddling miles. OTMJ

Tim Tebow to Headline Alabama Gala Supporting Families Affected by Parkinson’s

T

he Parkinson Association of Alabama is preparing for an evening that will blend philanthropy, personal testimony and public awareness as it hosts its second annual Tulip Gala this September.

On September 24, the black-tie event will bring together supporters from across Alabama to raise money for individuals and families living with Parkinson’s disease. The evening will include a cocktail reception, seated dinner, live and silent auctions, a wine pull and a raffle, with all proceeds benefiting the Parkinson Association of Alabama’s programs and services.

This year’s gala will feature former NFL quarterback, Heisman Trophy winner and philanthropist Tim Tebow as keynote speaker.

Tebow’s appearance carries a deeply personal connection to the cause. His father, Robert Tebow, lived with Parkinson’s disease for years before his death earlier this year. Tebow is expected to speak about the toll Parkinson’s takes not only on those diagnosed, but also on the families and care partners who walk through the disease alongside them.

That family-centered perspective reflects the reality of Parkinson’s, a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement and can also impact speech, sleep, mood, cognition and daily independence. While the condition is often associated with tremors, its effects are much broader and can place emotional, physical and financial strain on entire households. Organizations such as the Parkinson Association of Alabama aim to fill critical gaps by offering support, education and community resources for patients and caregivers.

The gala will also honor Jane Stephens Comer, an Alabama philanthropist and entrepreneur whose advocacy has had a lasting impact on Parkinson’s research and care in the state. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2011, Comer has become an important voice in efforts to improve treatment and expand scientific understanding of the disease. Her early support of UAB’s Parkinson’s initiatives helped strengthen one of Alabama’s leading centers for research and patient care.

In honoring Comer while also welcoming Tebow to the stage, the Tulip Gala is designed to do more than raise money. erry Leachman is a coach, author and mentor who’s spent over 40 years working with men. A former football player under Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant at the University of Alabama, he went on to coach at Briarwood Christian School before dedicating his life to ministry. He and his wife Holly have been married 55 years and now live on a ranch in Colorado. His book, Brave Hearts, Strong Arms: Locker Room Talks for the Only Game that Matters, distills decades of talks into a guide for men seeking purpose beyond success. Below, he shares what he’s learned about forgiveness, legacy and what it really means to “be a man.”

OTMJ: Tell us about your background.

JERRY LEACHMAN: I grew up in Montgomery after being an Air Force brat. My mother was a wonderful person, and my brother, Brad, was my best friend. My parents divorced when I was young, and I was very angry at my father for many years. Dad fought with the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II, and he was both a hero and scarred by the War. I was a football player at Sidney Lanier High School and later signed with Coach Bryant to play at Alabama. Coach Bryant and my teammates had a great impact on my life. I met my beautiful wife, Holly, at a Young Life Retreat, and we married when we were both very young. She is my best friend and my Christian inspiration.

I’m not a theologian or a preacher, I’m a coach, and most of my adult life has been spent ministering to, teaching and counseling men in Washington, D.C. I have two incredible sons and a lovely daughter, as well as grandchildren, all of whom I love and adore.

What is the goal of Brave Hearts, Strong Arms?

After 40 years of ministering to men, I’ve literally heard it all. Most men cannot give you a definition of what it means to “be a man,” and I have gained many insights into what men struggle with and how they can truly come to know who they are and what is ultimately important in life. My goal with this book is to coach men to examine their lives seriously and compare their lives to the teachings of Jesus about how to live.

Jerry and Holly Leachman have been married 54 years.

What caused you to write this book now?

I’ve given hundreds of talks over the years but never wrote any of them down. In fact, to be honest, I probably have ADD and couldn’t organize a two-person picnic. Over the years, many men have encouraged me to write a book, but I really don’t have that skill set. Then a man from Birmingham I didn’t know at the time, Norman Jetmundsen, came to me and said my talks needed to be preserved in a book, and more importantly, that he would help me do it. Norman was like a bulldog and wouldn’t give up, and finally, with the added encouragement of Richard Simmons, I decided to let Norman see what he could do, and Richard agreed to publish the book.

How did you get into mentoring other men?

It was sort of natural from being a football player and coach. I felt a special calling to go into Christian ministry focusing on men.

I seem to have a gift for helping men with problems of all sorts as well as being an encourager to place their ultimate faith in God and to get on the field in the game of life and make a difference. In short, I coach men to be part of the solution, instead of part of the problem.

You talk about forgiveness in the book.

Why is it important?

Forgiveness is one of the essential keys to living a full and blessed life. Too many people carry around the crushing baggage of regrets, failures, grievances and disappointment and never understand that forgiveness makes them free.

You mention the secret to significance.

What is that?

In a nutshell, success is what you do for yourself, and significance is what you do for others. Time and time again I meet men who have made success their god, and they end up miserable because either they never reach their definition of success, or they reach it and still find themselves unfulfilled, lonely and fearful. Jesus said there are three ways to live your life: waste it, sell it or give it away.

I believe that the only way to live a truly meaningful life is to give it away. OTMJ

Lulu Gribbin wants us to live our lives to the fullest.

L

ulu Strong” has become a phrase tied to resilience, perseverance and a recovery that has inspired people far beyond Mountain Brook.

Lulu Gribbin, however, doesn’t spend much time thinking of herself that way.

To her, she’s just your average teenager. Sure, life looks a little different than it did two years ago, but she still gets up, gets dressed and heads off to school every day just like her peers.

Lulu’s face isn’t just recognizable around Mountain Brook though. Her story has captured the attention, and hearts, of people all over the globe.

Her name made headlines after she survived a shark attack on June 7, 2024, losing part of her left arm and part of her right leg. The then 15-year-old was one of three people injured in shark attacks that day, all taking place along the Florida Panhandle’s 30A corridor, between Panama City Beach and Destin.

“I went unconscious in the water. A random stranger came and punched a shark off of me, and then I woke up on the shore,” Lulu says. “I remember leaning forward and seeing my nail

BY SARAH OWENS polish on my toes. I remember the tourniquet and just having many strangers surrounding me and all the paramedics coming.”

Lulu lost two-thirds of the blood in her body and credits her survival to the quick thinking of those strangers who just happened to be medical professionals on the beach that day.

“The next day, I was extubated, and the first thing I said was, ‘I made it,’” Lulu says. “That just really set the premise of what my recovery would look like.”

After the attack, Lulu spent five days at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola before being transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she spent 77 days. “We transferred to Charlotte because of a special surgery called targeted muscle reintegration, or TMR for short, and it’s where they get the nerves that were cut off and they tie them into the muscles,” Lulu says. “That way, it causes less phantom limb pain. And then a lot of the surgeries were flushing out bacteria in my residual limbs.”

Lulu underwent a total of nine surgeries and received intensive treatment and therapy that have allowed her to adapt remarkably

well to life as an amputee. “I think my story is an anomaly because of how awesome my care was,” Lulu says. “I literally was walking in two months, which is really unheard of. It takes like nine months to get a normal prosthetic, and so that was such a blessing that I was able to have my arm and leg before I left Charlotte.”

Lulu finally returned home to Mountain Brook on August 24, 2024, where she was welcomed with a parade in her honor. Since then, it’s been life back to normal, sort of.

Now 17 and a senior at Mountain Brook High School, Lulu still goes to class, does homework and shares in everyday life of a teenager. But she’s also been busy speaking to crowds, establishing her own nonprofit foundation and helping create a federal law.

Lulu has spoken before the Alabama State Legislature, at TEDx Youth and in front of crowds of up to 19,000 people. She has also been featured on ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s Nightly News “Great Americans,” and CBS Mornings.

She founded the Lulu Strong Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to make emerging technologies, including AI-powered prosthetics

and virtual reality therapy, more accessible to amputees. “I was the first patient to use the virtual reality headset for the upper limb from start to finish of my recovery,” Lulu says. “We wanted to make it more available, and so we decided to create the foundation. The goal is to fundraise money to give grants to other organizations, other companies who are diving into all this cool and amazing research, and to help expand the amputee space.”

So far, the foundation has given two grants.

The first, announced in March, gave $100,000 to Axolo Health, the Charlotte-based company behind the virtual reality Targeted Brain Rehabilitation therapy that played a pivotal role in Lulu’s recovery.

Because of the therapy, Lulu has almost no phantom limb pain in her arm and believes she would have experienced similar results with her leg had the technology been available for lower limb loss.

“We are honored to be the recipients of the first-ever grant from the Lulu Strong Foundation,” says orthopedic surgeon Glenn Gaston, co-founder of Axolo Health. “Having treated Lulu, we’ve seen firsthand the results that the right care can achieve. This support will keep our research moving forward to expand access to life-changing treatment to any and all amputee patients.”

In July, the foundation awarded $50,000 to the RIVL Foundation, founded by four-time Paralympian and amputee Jarryd Wallace, to support development of an app for the amputee community. The app will use AI and an expert-built information library to create personalized guides, track milestones and connect amputees with resources based on their individual needs.

“After my amputation, I had to piece together my own network of doctors, other amputees and resources through trial and error,” says

“This grant lets us expand on what we’ve already built and share it with amputees everywhere, so the next person doesn’t have to start from scratch.”

Beyond the foundation, Lulu helped establish Lulu’s Law, aimed at improving emergency communications surrounding wildlife dangers at the beach in hopes of preventing future attacks like her own. “Something that I’m super proud of is having a federal law in my name and getting to make the beaches safer,” Lulu says. “Not only does it make the beaches safer, but it allows the lifeguards to be notified quicker, and to help them be hands-on faster.”

Signed into federal law on June 26, Lulu’s Law requires that the Federal Communications Commission allow geofenced wireless emergency alerts on mobile phones in the

event of a shark attack or dangerous water conditions.

Lulu has shared those milestones, and much of her recovery, with more than 287,000 Instagram followers. She remembers sitting in a Pensacola hospital room with her twin sister, Ellie, and her dad, Joe, discussing the account they had created to document her recovery. They considered making it private, but it had already gained 10,000 followers.

They left it public, and the audience grew from there.

With that audience came an adjustment to being in the public eye. Lulu has grown accustomed to being recognized, but she’s also had to navigate the stares and attention that can come with being an amputee. “I try not to like let it bother me and continue to just live an everyday life,” she says.

But behind the milestones and moments she’s shared publicly, Lulu’s recovery hasn’t been without difficult days. “I think that pain was one of the hardest parts, because you can’t recover if you’re in pain,” she says.

Even as the physical pain subsided, Lulu had to relearn things she once did without thinking.

Walking proved particularly challenging. “I think the most difficult thing was relearning how to walk. It seemed easy, I feel like, to people who are watching because when I got my leg, I got up and started walking with a walker,” she says. “But it actually took a lot more trust than I thought it would because I was learning how to walk with something that was metal, that was full of technology, and not something that I was used to.”

The experience also challenged Lulu’s faith early on. During one particularly difficult day in the hospital, Lulu remembers feeling angry, frustrated and sad as she struggled to understand why the attack had happened to her. She questioned why God had chosen her to endure the pain and uncertainty of recovery.

That night, her mom reminded her that her appearance did not define her and placed a Bible verse, Mark 10:27, beside her hospital

With graduation approaching, Lulu plans to attend college, though she hasn’t decided where just yet. Wherever she ends up, she says the attack has changed the way she thinks about the life ahead of her. “Obviously, life’s not a given, and that’s taught me to live every day like it’s the last day on earth,” she says. “Literally, live your life to the fullest, and don’t waste a minute of your time ever.”

Style Meets Comfort

bed: “With God, all things are possible.” From then on, Lulu turned to the verse during some of her most painful moments, reading it over and over as doctors gave her shots or performed treatments. “Really what keeps me going every day is my friends, my family and the Lord, so I wake up every day with a smile on my face and conquer the day,” she says.

When she’s not in school or speaking to a crowd, Lulu spends time journaling, praying or enjoying a car ride jamming to music. She also loves to play golf and has joined the United States Disabled Golf Association, where she

Two Mountain Brook friends turned Napa Valley wine into a mission to give back to The University of Alabama.

S

ome business ventures begin with a spreadsheet. This one began with a question between friends.

Why, Butch Burkett and Bill Rodrigues wondered, couldn’t The University of Alabama family have a premium wine collection worthy of its dynasty?

“Can’t we bottle up that rich tradition into a celebratory drink that generations can share and enjoy with family and friends while rekindling cherished memories?”

The question sounded simple enough.

Answering it would carry the two Mountain Brook businessmen more than 2,000 miles from home, into California wine country and the highly specialized worlds of vineyards, winemaking, licensing, fulfillment and direct-to-consumer sales.

What began as an ambitious idea between friends has become Crimson Dynasty Wines, a collection of three California wines created for Alabama alumni, fans and wine enthusiasts— crafted in Napa Valley. A royalty from every bottle sold benefits The University of Alabama and its student-athletes.

Crimson Dynasty was developed by Collegiate Wines, LLC, the company Burkett and Rodrigues formed with their partners to create premium wine brands connected to university communities.

BY CARL HOLDEN Both men understood the strength of Alabama’s traditions and the lifelong relationships that grow from them, and they recognized something nearly every Alabama household already knows: alumni and supporters gather around food and wine for game days, holidays, weddings, business dinners and every milestone in between.

But the idea was never simply to place university colors on an existing bottle. Burkett and Rodrigues set out to build an authentic wine company, with a respected winemaker, carefully selected wines, professional packaging and

a long-term commitment to quality. The collection needed to appeal to devoted Alabama supporters while satisfying experienced wine drinkers who would judge it entirely on what was in the glass.

That distinction became central to the company’s mission. The Alabama identity might introduce someone to Crimson Dynasty, but the quality of the wine had to bring that customer back. below: Friends at Lake Martin sipping the Crimson Dynasty Wines.

Getting there meant learning an industry famous for its complexity. Alcohol licensing, regulatory compliance, interstate shipping, inventory management, e-commerce, fulfillment, customer service and University approvals all had to work together before the first bottle could reach a customer. Rather than shortcut the process, the founders assembled experienced partners at every step.

The most important relationship began with Jean Hoefliger, the Swiss-born winemaker whose career spans Bordeaux, South Africa, Italy, Spain and California, and whose wines have earned multiple 100-point ratings.

Known for wines that combine structure and complexity with balance and approachability, Hoefliger gave Crimson Dynasty immediate credibility in California wine circles. But the founders say the partnership worked because Hoefliger understood what they were trying to build: not a novelty product, but a serious collection reflecting the same pursuit of excellence Alabama supporters associate with the University itself.

Working with Hoefliger, the company developed a three-wine portfolio built for different occasions and preferences. The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, from Napa Valley, is the collection’s boldest wine, with dark fruit, earthy complexity, a structured character and a mineral-driven finish. The 2024 Pinot Noir offers red berry fruit, baking spice and refined tannins; and the 2024 Chardonnay, produced from Alexander Valley fruit in Sonoma County, brings tropical and stone-fruit flavors together with freshness and subtle richness.

In June, Decanter—an influential wine publication—awarded 94 points to the Crimson Dynasty 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon and 93 points each to the 2024 Pinot Noir and 2024 Chardonnay.

All three received the publication’s Highly Recommended designation.

Although the wine is produced in California and sold online to customers across the country, much of Crimson Dynasty’s growth has happened the old-fashioned way: face to face, in Alabama.

Burkett and Rodrigues have introduced the wines at alumni gatherings, charitable events, business functions, wine festivals, Universityrelated celebrations, supper clubs and countless occasions where family and friends come together. Their wives, Bebe Burkett and Marcie Rodrigues, together with Val Miller, Director of Marketing, and Sara Smith, Director of Finance, have helped tell the Crimson Dynasty story and connect with alumni, supporters and wine enthusiasts.

by Collegiate Wines, but Burkett and Rodrigues see the business as a scalable model for connecting other university communities through premium wines.

Legacy in Motion

The Southbound Food Festival celebrates female chefs and their heritage.

egan Pinckney Rutherford, founder of the popular lifestyle blog Shades of Pinck, grew up eating Gullah red rice on Sundays. The flavorful rice dish originated with the Gullah Geechee people, African Americans descended from enslaved West and Central Africans. But she had not heard of jollof rice, a West African dish, until researching for her new book.

Pinckney Rutherford tried jollof rice for the first time on a trip to Ghana. Though she was thousands of miles from home, the dish was practically identical to the Gullah red rice she had eaten growing up. “I was just amazed at how that recipe had traveled across the Atlantic,” she says. “We’re nearly 500 years past the first ship coming to the Americas, and that recipe is still a part of my everyday life.”

On September 19, Pinckney Rutherford will demonstrate how to cook Gullah red rice at the Southbound Food Festival. She is one of nine participants in the festival’s ROOTED: Women in Food event, presented by Baptist Health Women’s Medical Center. The event’s theme is Legacy in Motion, a celebration of Southern women chefs and the traditions that influence them.

Cheryl Slocum, a James Beard-winning food journalist, editor and recipe developer, came up with the Legacy in Motion concept after

moderating a panel with several high-profile Black woman chefs.

The panel discussed the legacy of Edna Lewis, an acclaimed African-American chef who shaped how Americans viewed southern cooking. Slocum wanted the festival to highlight the importance of such legacies. “The point of legacy to me is that we’re carrying these memories and these traditions forward,” says Slocum. “We’re sharing who’s done what and recognizing who’s done what to influence us.”

After she received an invite from the festival earlier this year, Pinckney Rutherford’s publishers suggested she participate in the Women in Food event. By then, she had already embarked on a yearslong journey to understand her Gullah Geechee heritage for her upcoming book, Grits and Grace. A sixth-generation native of Charleston, South Carolina, Pinckney Rutherford grew up in a close-knit community Cheryl that valued Gullah Geechee culture. “It’s really Slocum cool because I grew up on property that my grandfather’s great-great-grandfather purchased during Reconstruction,” she says.

But when Pinckney Rutherford moved to Columbia, South Carolina—where her husband grew up—she realized that her son would not have the same Charleston upbringing. “If there were things that I wanted him to take away from that culture, it was my responsibility to

provide those to him,” she says. “It just started making me realize the role of women when it comes to cultural stewardship and what it means to pass things on.”

Through her book, she hopes to teach her son about their shared heritage. But Pinckney Rutherford also has another view of legacy: it does not just mean passing down centuries of history, it means creating a sense of home.

A sense of home “isn’t just a physical structure,” she says. “It’s what it smells like, what it tastes like, what it feels like.”

Pickney Rutherford’s grandmother created that sense of home for her. “She’s the one that just always made family a feeling, not just a word,” says Pinckney Rutherford. “She was the arbiter of our family recipes, and she made meals and dishes the way that her grandmother and her mother taught her.”

Slocum’s grandmother played a similar role. As a child, Slocum would visit her grandmother’s apartment in New York City.

Her grandmother would put ice and rock salt in a container to make banana ice cream, cook a delicious oxtail soup or bake peach cobbler.

Slocum’s grandmother found time to cook despite being a working professor. Stacks of gourmet magazines would lie around her apartment.

“She was a professional person at a job at a university that was an important job, but food still was important,” says Slocum.

Food was also an important part of Slocum’s day-to-day life. Her mother would prepare meals or, if Slocum wanted to eat something else, allow her to make her own food. “My mother didn’t have a problem with me having something different than everyone else.

But I just had to make it myself,” says Slocum.

Slocum’s mother provided culinary lessons while cooking.

One time, Slocum’s younger sister took a bite of raw hamburger meat when the family was in the kitchen. “I was like, ‘oh no,’” says Slocum. But her mom had “just had a very matter-of-fact, scientific kind of mentality. And she was like, ‘well, that’s just the beginning of steak tartare.’”

At the Women in Food event, Slocum will moderate a panel with four chefs: Virginia Willis, a James Beard-winning chef, cookbook author, and TV personality; Sandra Gutierrez, an award-winning food journalist, cookbook author and culinary expert; Erika Council, owner of the nationally acclaimed Bomb Biscuit restaurant in Atlanta and cookbook author and Pinckney Rutherford. The panel will feature “all four of the chefs that we invited talking about their legacies, what it’s meant to them, how it influenced them,” says Slocum.

A legacy can look different for everyone. It can look like a red rice dish that traveled thousands of miles, memories of a grandmother making banana ice cream or even a sister eating raw hamburger meat. But the chefs agree on one thing: these legacies are important to share. “Things get carried forward, they evolve sometimes,” says Slocum, “but then you also want to preserve and certainly remember and certainly record.” OTMJ

A SPECTACLE of DESIGN Over the past 20 years, Antiques at the Gardens has become a destination like no other for anyone who appreciates antiques and well-appointed interiors.

The story of Antiques at the Gardens is a story of people and their passions. It’s a story of antiques dealers and interior designers, volunteers and enthusiasts. And it’s a story of pivots and innovation, growth and evolution that all began in 2006 as a fundraiser for the 67.5 acres of wonderland that is Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

The antique show’s now-official ambassador, designer Richard Keith Langham, was one of the first to help put the show on the map nationally. After the Brewton, Alabama, native spoke at Antiques at the Gardens in its third year, the show began to draw bigger and bigger names from the design world to Birmingham in a list that’s become a who’s who in design: Bunny Williams, Charlotte Moss, Martha Stewart, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Bobby McAlpine, Miles Redd, Christopher Spitzmiller, Ken Fulk, Celerie Kemble, Alexa Hampton, to name a few.

Stephanie Lynton, a returning co-chair of the event, points to another turning point in 2021 when the world was still coming out of COVID, and all the events were held outdoors–“out in the gardens, for the gardens,” she says, recalling one of the events where she served left: These design pieces act as an aesthetic preview of this year’s show with wallpaper from design sponsor Gracie wallpaper as well as Samuel & Sons trims, Devote Studios invitations and Claremont fabrics. “All these plates are spinning. It’s exciting, and it’s daunting, but you feel so grateful for the team you have doing their best to make it beautiful.”

–stephanie lynton, co-chair as a co-chair. “You had this giant white tent on this big green flat space, so the bars needed to be more colorful, the decor needed to be bigger because it had to fill the tent. The florals were over-the-top that year. It took on a more designery feel because it was such an empty box, and we had to make it look homey, like a room.”

That design momentum built even more when a design sponsor came on board for the first time, sending all kinds of fabrics, wallpapers, accessories and more, whatever their specialty is, for the decor at the show that year. “That’s added a whole different dimension,” says Emily Bowron, the chairman of the Board of the Friends of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. “It takes the level of the decor up.”

Since then, design sponsors Sister Parish, de Gournay, Cowtan & Tout, Kravet/Lee Jofa and Schumacher’s patterns have all graced the walls and tables of the show. This year’s design sponsor Gracie will bring in more than 180 custom hand-painted wallpaper panels to line the gardens, indoors and out as well as custom fabric. “It’s going to be over-the-top this year,” Lynton says of the overall design.

In this new era with design sponsors, the gardens’ lecture stage feels more like a well-appointed living room. “The designs are very elaborate and absolutely gorgeous, and it gives everybody a little bit of a way to dream about what you can do in your own space,” Bowron says. “It’s added another layer of beauty to the show.”

With the growth of the event has come growth in the support of the garden too. The show is the largest fundraiser for the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens and covers two-thirds of their operating budget for the gardens themselves—educational programs for all ages and summer camps—and for the more that 330,000 visitors who come to the gardens annually.

Since 2006, the show has netted more than $7.5 million. “The bigger this function has become, the greater the fundraising result is,” Bowron says. “That has helped us tremendously.”

Not to mention, Antiques at the Gardens has become a great PR asset for all of Birmingham, showing off the city at its best. “We have people coming from all over the U.S. to attend this function, and they fall in love in Birmingham and go home and tell their friends and family how wonderful this city is,” Bowron says.

While much of the now four-day show has evolved over two decades, some things have remained the same, like antique dealers who have been at the show all 20 years: Whitehall Antiques from Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Thomas M. Fortner Antiques from Memphis and McDonough Fine Art from Atlanta. “They have stuck with us the entire time, which is kind of remarkable,” says Tricia Noble, who has organized staging and booths for the antique dealers since the show started 20 years ago. above, right: A notable design moment from the 2025 show started with an arched piece of furniture from a Norwegian castle’s dish room.

Others like Edwin C. Skinner and Antique Cupboard have been coming almost that long, and those who return year to year are “good ambassadors for us when they go to other shows [across the country],” Noble says.

Another angle of the story of the Antiques at the Gardens’ 20-year history is all that goes on behind the scenes each year. As soon as one show ends, work on the next year’s begins with the co-chairs meeting weekly to reinvent the show’s look and programming. A full year of planning all coalesces on the ground the week of the event.

The setup begins when trucks and vans full of antiques coming from dealers on the East Coast and as far away as Los Angeles and the United Kingdom start to arrive. Professional movers from McCorquodale Transfer carefully unload each delicate piece and deliver it all to a dealer’s booth. From there, it’s time for dealers to arrange their wares and “fluff” up the style of it all.

Next come stylists and florists arriving on the scene. “It’s organized chaos for a couple of days,” Noble says. The activity is nonstop.

Anticipation builds. All that begets profound beauty, each year distinct of the one before.

By 6 p.m. on Thursday, the work is complete as the honoree celebration before the gala begins, and the end result is nothing short of a dramatic transformation. “Everybody works together…coming up with creative ways to solve problems, and it’s just a great team,” Bowron says. “That’s when you recognize how much talent is in this city.”

Lynton agrees, “All these plates are spinning. It’s exciting, and it’s daunting, but you feel so grateful for the team you have doing their best to make it beautiful.”

Each year it’s that team that makes Antiques at the Gardens the phenomenon that it has become. Time will only tell where the next 20 years will take it. OTMJ

HOMEWOOD ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL CLASS

he people spoke, and Homewood listened.

After a weeks-long nomination process, the inaugural class of the Homewood Athletics Hall of Fame has been made public, and it is, in a word, amazing.

The list of names reads like a Who’s Who of Homewood High School’s rich 54-year history of athletic excellence. The Hall of Fame will annually celebrate coaches, players and administrators who have made an impact on the community, beginning with the inaugural class who will be recognized at an induction ceremony later this fall.

“We are so proud to induct an elite group into our first Hall of Fame class. These individuals represent various sports, and our inductees span decades,” says Rick Baguley, Athletic Director for Homewood City Schools. “The Homewood Athletics Hall of Fame will give us the opportunity to annually celebrate and honor the rich tradition of elite athletes and coaches who have helped make Homewood successful.”

coaches in Alabama history. His accomplishments earned him induction into the Alabama High School Athletics Association (AHSAA) Hall of Fame in 2007, and the field now bears his name— Bob Newton Field at Waldrop Stadium.

Gerald Gann, the longest-tenured head football coach in school history, guided the Patriots to six region titles and three state runner-up finishes, and also spent nine years as head coach of the girls’ basketball program.

Alvin Bressler holds a special place in Homewood history as the program’s first football coach, leading the Patriots to their first state championship in 1974, just two years after the school’s founding.

Dickey Wright built championships in two sports, serving as defensive coordinator for five state football titles while also winning five titles as head wrestling coach, developing 37 individual state champions along the way.

David Jones, part of the program since Homewood’s doors opened in 1971, remains the only staff member to have been part of all six state football championships and still helps coach the team today.

Susan Cook won two volleyball state championships and over 700 matches during her three-decade career. She also founded the area’s volleyball officials association and

started the UAB volleyball program.

Tom Esslinger built a track and cross country dynasty at Homewood, capturing 31 state championships and earning national and regional Coach of the Year honors before moving on to Hewitt-Trussville and Samford University.

Tim Shepler spent nearly 30 years building the basketball program into a contender, reaching four Final Four and racking up 591 wins along the way. Colleagues say Shepler was defined by his quiet dedication to his players rather than seeking the spotlight.

The class also includes educator Michael Gross, Homewood High School’s first principal and later superintendent. Gross is credited as a driving force behind the school’s early athletics programs.

Robert Davis remains the only Mr. Football selection in school history, rushing for over 6,500 career yards before playing at LSU and UAB. Evan Mathis starred on the football field and wrestling mat before a standout career at Alabama and an NFL career that included a Super Bowl championship with the Denver Broncos.

Chris Gray excelled at Homewood before moving on to Auburn and then a 15-year NFL career, mostly with Seattle, where he still holds the franchise record for consecutive starts.

Austin Hubbard led Homewood football to its only undefeated season in 2005 while also

anchoring a baseball team that reached the program’s only Final Four appearance.

Aaron Ernest became an 11-time AllAmerican sprinter at LSU after setting Homewood records in the 100m and 200m, later earning World Junior gold.

Katy Frierson, regarded as the best female soccer player to come out of Homewood, went on to All-American honors and a Hermann Trophy finalist nomination at Auburn before launching a professional career in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Ronald Nored helped lead Homewood basketball before starring at Butler, reaching back-to-back NCAA title games and building an NBA coaching career. Nored was hired as Butler’s head coach in March and will begin his first season at the helm of his alma mater this fall.

Kiara Williams put together one of the most decorated track careers in school history, winning state titles in everything from the long jump to the heptathlon before earning multiple All-American honors at Alabama.

VESTAVIA HILLS SERVES UP HISTORY WITH FIRST OUTDOOR VOLLEYBALL EVENT IN ALABAMA

H

istory was made on Saturday, August 29, at Wald Park in Vestavia Hills as the location of the first-ever outdoor high school volleyball showcase.

Officially sanctioned by the Alabama High School Athletic Association and hosted by Vestavia Hills High School, the event brought together some of the top ninth-grade, junior varsity and varsity high school teams in the area for a day of volleyball that began in the sunshine and ended under the lights.

The event brought teams from Mountain Brook, Spain Park and Thompson, and while the final scores didn’t exactly lean in the direction of the over-the-mountain clubs, nothing could dampen the spirits for the local coaches and athletes.

Vestavia Hills head volleyball coach Ashley Hardee says the event was more than just an excuse to soak up a few rays but was a chance to promote the sport to a wider audience in a fun and exciting setting. “Today was a celebration of all our athletes and our sport too. I got a lot of responses from people who just attended their first volleyball match, and they were blown away about how exciting it was,” says Hardee.

In the days prior to the Wald Park matches, Hardee spoke about the idea’s genesis and the opportunity for his players to be part of a

historic first. The idea for outdoor volleyball games began with an event called “Volleyball Day In Nebraska” held at Memorial Stadium at the University of Nebraska. In 2023, more than 90,000 fans came out to watch the Nebraska Cornhuskers—one of the nation’s most successful volleyball programs—defeat the Omaha Mavericks. The event set a record for the highest attendance at a women’s sporting event in the United States and started a similar trend at the college and high school level.

Hardee also cites other special outdoor

athletic events, such as the National Hockey League’s annual outdoor game and the inaugural Carrier Classic, a college basketball game featuring North Carolina and Michigan State on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson in 2011.

Sensing an opportunity to highlight the Vestavia Hills volleyball program and the sport in general, Hardee presented the idea to Director of Athletics Laura Casey, who was enthusiastic about the idea. “It’s a celebration of our sport with our athletes and the talent we have here at Vestavia Hills but throughout

Birmingham too,” says Hardee. “There’s a strong history of good volleyball in Birmingham.

I went to our athletics director, Laura Casey, back in January and said, ‘Here is something that has been happening and is a bit of a trend in our sport,’ and she said, ‘Absolutely. Let’s do this.’”

Hardee says the outdoor volleyball event generated a significant amount of buzz throughout Birmingham’s volleyball community, especially among the players.

It also created a little light-hearted envy among the outgoing senior class. “The players were super excited about it. As you can imagine, last year’s seniors, when they heard about it, they were like, ‘What? You waited to do this now,’” Hardee says.

With a court set up in the outfield of the baseball field at Wald Park, games started at with the Mountain Brook and Spain Park ninth grade teams and continued well into the evening, as fans gathered on the surrounding hillside on blankets and lawn chairs to witness history in the making.

Despite temperatures reaching the mid-90s, some delays affecting game times and losses by Mountain Brook to Spain Park (2-1) and Vestavia Hills to Thompson (2-0), it was a great day for volleyball regardless of the final scores. OTMJ
