Daniel Bender

Dan has spent most of his professional career in the tire sector, working with several regional and national companies. Since 2010, Dan has been with the Tire Discounter Group and is currently their Director of Sales.

Dan's understanding of the tire distribution networks across Canada will prove to be invaluable to the Association, and his knowledge will help guide the Association as we adapt to the ever-changing landscape of the tire industry.

Erik Fielding

With 25 years of experience, Erik Fielding brings a wealth of knowledge, understanding and a genuine love for the tire sector.

Family-owned and operated since 1983 Fielding’s Tire & Automotive will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2024, a milestone that Eric, his family and employees can be proud of.

Erik’s approach to providing his customers with good service, great value, and forming solid customer relationships will help the OTDA as we continue to develop and deliver more opportunities for our members.

Jeremy Hanford

Family-owned and operated since 1986, Jeremy’s hands-on mentality has helped Hanford Tire & Service grow and expand to 2 locations in London, Ont. Jeremy and Hanford Tire are not only dedicated to the industry but also to their local community, where they have been awarded several community and industry-based service awards.

The OTDA believes Jeremy’s philosophy of “to treat other people the way we would want to be treated” will go a long way in aiding the OTDA as we continue to support our members and their needs.

The OTDA Board of Directors and our members would like to congratulate and welcome Dan, Erik and Jeremy!

As a dedicated family man, friend and colleague, Ron loved life and lived every day to its fullest.

Ron’s gentle voice, words of wisdom and upbeat personality will be missed by many, however, Ron will live on in our hearts as we remember the many stories and adventures, he shared with us all.

2024 1st QUARTER TRAINING SCHEDULE AUTOMOTIVE TIRE SERVICE (ATS) TRAINING Certified Automotive Tire Service (ATS) is a 300-level certification program that provides in-depth and comprehensive instruction on the recommended procedures for servicing modern automobile and light truck tires.

Certified ATS is designed for professional passenger and light truck tire technicians, so the subjects range from the relationship between torque and clamping force to the TPMS relearn procedures on domestic and import vehicles.

What is Canada’s diversion rate?

This rate is calculated by dividing the annual tonnes of tires recycled by the tonnes of tires collected.

For 2021, CATRA’s latest data year, the diversion rate was 95% which compares to the 2020 rate of 97%. As a mature program, over time, Canada’s diversion rate balances out at close to 100%: the average rate over the past 10 years stands at 102%.

Does your staff understand the significance of a tire’s load index rating and how it applies to a vehicle's overall handling and safety? If you hesitated to answer that question, it may be time for a brief “refresh” on the topic.

The load index rating refers to the maximum carrying weight a tire can support when properly inflated.

The load index is represented as a two or three-digit code; when the code is compared to a load index chart, technicians can then determine the maximum carrying weight of the tire under specific inflation.

The tire's load index is typically located on the tire's sidewall, beside the speed rating and as part of the tire's service description. The load index for the vehicle is found on the door placard with the rest of the vehicle's recommended tire information.

While most modern tire sizing programs in shops calculate the load index and factor it into the recommended tires, employees should still know how the load index works and how to read the charts.

Another consideration is when customers bring already-owned tires to your shop for mount, balance, and installation. The best practice is to verify the size, load index, and speed rating against the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation on the door placard before the tires are installed.

Winter Safety In this edition of Safety Corner, we are looking at winter safety & what you can do to protect your staff, customers, and business.

Outdoor tech safety tips: 1) Wear layered clothing. Wearing multiple layers of clothing allows the worker to adjust their protection based on current temperature. Take off layers as you get too warm and put them on as it gets colder.

2) Take extra clothes. Bring a change of clothes in case you get wet. Dry clothing always help keep workers warm, especially when working outdoors.

Take a break. During extremely cold or windy weather, take regular breaks to warm up before continuing work.

3) Drink up. Even though it’s cold out, keep hydrated by drinking water or other warm drinks. You will still sweat when working, even in cold temperatures. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

4) Know the signs. Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of frost bite and hypothermia. Get inside if you begin to experience them. If you see a co-worker showing symptoms, take them inside immediately.

5) To avoid slipping on ice, wear winter boots with a strong tread. Spread sand or rock salt on the ice to provide a rough surface for footwear to grip.

Ice and snow are inevitable, but injuries to your workers and customers from slips, trips and falls are not.

This means, don't wait for the snow to fall before raising employee awareness about winter hazards and check in advance if your outside contractor will clear snow and ice in an emergency.

1. Do your homework when hiring outside contractors. Don't hire a contractor based on price alone, check their qualifications and follow up with references. Ask questions such as, do they have general liability insurance and a valid WSIB certificate? Will they come out during emergency situations to ensure everything is still safe for your employees and customers?"

2. Decide how your maintenance staff and outside contractor will work together to ensure the workplace is always free of winter hazards. Responsibility for keeping stairs, floors, entranceways clear of ice and snow typically rests on the employer's own staff, but they may also have to take on the walkways and the parking lot if the contractor is absent and conditions require it. Thoroughly read and understand your contractor agreement and possible building lease agreement.

3. Raise awareness of winter hazards and solutions among all staff in advance.

For example: •!

place posters in high visibility areas, such as washrooms, lunch areas, and wherever else people congregate encourage supervisors to add winter safety to safety talks. Possibilities include watching out for and reporting hazards, and wearing proper footwear (low heels, warm, waterproof, good ice/snow traction, etc.)

4. Identify and assess winter hazards throughout the season. Use every tool at your disposal, including daily inspections, incident reports, complaints, and one-up observations. Are snow and ice promptly cleared from walkways, parking lots and loading docks? Are they deposited in a safe place? Are entrances and exits to buildings unobstructed and overhanging snowdrifts removed? Are parking lot sight lines open? Could melting runoff turn into black ice?

5. Review the ice and snow removal process in the spring. "Identify gaps while it's fresh on everyone's mind. Talk to the joint health and safety committee and workers, then make changes before the new contract goes out for quotes in August or September."

6. Review your prevention plan on an annual basis. Are you legally still compliant? Is your program controlling winter hazards? Ask employees about near misses. Cross-reference your own records with statistics regarding the frequency and type of injuries that are occurring.

The Ontario Tire Dealers Association was proud to present this year's OTDA Fundraiser and Charity Golf Classic recipient, Feed Ontario, with a donation in excess of $7000.00.

Feed Ontario is the province's largest collective of hunger relief organizations.

Together with food banks, industry partners, and local communities, Feed Ontario works to end hunger and poverty by delivering fresh and healthy food, developing innovative programming, and driving change through research and advocacy.

Feed Ontario's food programs work in partnership with Ontario's agricultural, food, and grocery sectors to ensure food banks are stocked with the fresh, healthy food they need to support their communities.

Feed Ontario’s mission is to champion an impactful network of hunger relief organizations and advocate for solutions to end food insecurity and poverty in Ontario.

Washington, Oregon, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut also wrote the EPA, citing the chemical’s “unreasonable threat” to their waters and fisheries. The agency’s decision to grant the petition is the first step to banning the chemical, with tire manufacturers already looking king ng for alternatives to 6PPD

The Tire Industry Association (TIA), established in 1921, is an international non-profit association representing all segments of the tire industry, including companies that manufacture, repair, recycle, sell, service or use new or retreaded tires, and those suppliers or individuals who furnish equipment, material or services to the industry.
