Common risks your tire business could face... continued Life Safety

Ensuring you and your employees are safe is a top priority for any business owner. At a minimum, companies should be following the NFPA 101: Life Safety Code, building code standards, and provincial regulations. For example, some building codes may require that buildings where tires are stored have a separate corridor so that all personnel and tenants of the building can easily exit.

In abusiness that dealswith tires, it’salso important to teach proper handling techniques to employees and enforce them. If tires are not handled correctly, employees’ could sustain injuries to their arms, shoulders, or backs. This is especially important with oversized tires, such as commercial truck tires, farm equipment tires, and off-road tires.

18

LIFE SAFETY

Commercial truck tires weigh between 105 to 110 pounds, and farm equipment and offespeciallyif lifting equipment is used, they can also cause serious harm andleave aworker incapacitated to a point where they cannot call for help. In turn, procedures should be createdandimplementedby the company to reduce the risk of injuries. Some safety measures couldinclude the use of equipment to helpwith the work, apolicy that no person works alone, and regular check-ins to monitor the employees’ safety.

• Ensure regular communication between the supervisor and worker. This is critical. Have the worker check in at predetermined times set by the employer. Cell phones are a must, and if a cell phone won't work at the lone worker's location, provide some other means of communication, such as a satellite phone or radio.

Where to start:

• Determine if the worker is suitable for the job. Working alone can be very challenging, and the worker should also be medically fit to work alone.

CORNER

Your hazard assessment will determine whether risks are too high or can be controlled, and what changes or preventive measures to put in place.

24

These workers face all sorts of hazards, some of them high risk. As the employer, it's your legal duty to protect them just as you do other employees, but how do you manage it all from a distance.

Many shops and repair facilities offer roadside and remote service.

Essential control measures:

• Emergencies. Equip lone workers with emergency contact numbers and locations, as well as first aid kits. Include a paper copy of the numbers in case cell phone service is interrupted and the worker needs to use a landline or even a pay phone

• Identify and assess the hazards a lone worker may face with help from the worker, others who have done the job, and your joint health and safety committee. In addition to hazards related to equipment and processes, assess factors that could put the lone worker at higher risk, such as accidents, illness, fire or other emergencies, driving and weather conditions, sudden illness, and risk of violence.

• Training. To minimize hazards, lone workers need the proper knowledge, skills and equipment, beginning with training in safe work practices, communication and emergency procedures. Depending on the risks, training might also focus on violence and harassment, defensive driving and vehicle inspection, and managing risks. If the hazard assessment calls for personal protective equipment, provide it, along with training in its proper use, fit and care.

• Understand the laws and standards that apply to the work your employee will be doing. Is working alone prohibited in some circumstances?

SAFETY

• Consider whether new, young or female employees face a higher risk.

It all starts with a hazard assessment.

How to Prepare Your Business to Weather a Recession - Part 1

• Tap into emerging trends.

With so much economic uncertainty right now and talk of recession, many business owners are understandably worried about what the future holds. This 2-part series highlights steps to future-proof your business. For starters, you'll want a good plan covering the next 12 to 24 months, a relentless sales push, a razor-sharp focus on cash flow, and a willingness to make some changes. Preparing a financial cushion and having a recession strategy is step one to surviving an economic downturn. Reduce your cash going out and increase your cash coming in. To improve cash coming in now is a great time to review your selling strategy:

• Review your customers. Revisit your "ideal customer" profile and research to make sure these buyers are still able to buy, how much they are buying and when they are buying– an economic downturn may be affecting them too. You may need to reconsider who is your target customer.
