As of July 1st, the environmental deposit charged on the purchase of each new tire will increase from $3.00 to $4.50.

The Quebec Minister of Finance, Eric Girard, made the announcement during the presentation of his budget.

The government announcement, which is expected to raise $64.6 million over the next five.

OPP Const. Conrad Vitalis said in a video that the commercial truck lost control after making contact with the flying wheel and crashed into the centre median ditch of the highway.

No one was injured during the collision, Vitalis said.

Police continue to stop drivers in Ontario for using studded tires, a type of winter tire that is only legal in part of the province.

The only exception is for drivers visiting from an out-of-town province or is a resident of northern Ontario. They can be used for no more than 30 days.

The maximum fine for using studded tires in southern Ontario is $1,000.

Ontario Provincial Police in Brant County are searching for witnesses of a flying tire on Highway 403 after the tire reportedly caused a truck to crash.

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of Highway 403 between Maple Ave. and Bishopsgate Rd., west of Brantford.

Wheel Nut Torquing

Improper or unchecked torquing of wheel nuts are the most common causes for these types of claims. When wheel nuts are over-torqued, studs can become stretched and eventually break. Rims can also crack as a result of over-torquing. In both cases, excess force is placed on the remaining wheel nuts and studs, which weakens them and causes them to break, resulting in a detached wheel.

Under-torquing can be just as serious, as it can lead to the wheel nuts being loosened easily under much less force. Again, the result can be a detached wheel.

There are some products on the market that can provide assistance by either alerting when a wheel nut has lost torque, or preventing the wheel nuts from backing off. However, proper torquing by a quali昀ed technician can be the best preventative measure. When the wheel nuts have been removed for tire repair or replacement, it’s essential that the wheel nuts be torqued to the manufacturer’s speci昀cations.

But your obligation should not end there. Wheel nut tightness should be checked after a certain period of use, usually 80 kilometres. The customer should be made aware of this requirement and be advised to return for a follow-up appointment. Should a lawsuit arise, keeping the documentation indicating that you advised the customer accordingly could help. Many businesses record this information directly on the customer’s invoice.

Sample customer invoice wording:

“Your wheel nuts have been torqued to manufacturer’s speci昀cations. Wheel nut tightness should be checked at 80 kilometres of driving.”

To help prevent claims and ensuing lawsuits, be sure to torque the wheel nuts to the manufacturer’s speci昀cations and advise the customer to return for a follow-up appointment.

SAFETY CORNER

Naloxone in the Workplace

Actions to raise addictions awareness, reduce stigma and save lives.

Effective June 1, 2023, workplaces at risk of a worker opioid overdose will be required to have at least one naloxone kit available onsite and have staff trained in its use, as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act amendment introduced in April 2022 (Sec. 25.2).

An associated regulation, Naloxone Kits (O. Reg. 559/22) also comes into effect, which prescribes the contents of a naloxone kit, and sets out additional requirements related to the provision and maintenance of naloxone kits.

22

Naloxone (pronounced na-LOX-own) is a drug that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Opioids are drugs that are prescribed by a medical practitioner to treat pain. However, opioids are also used recreationally. Some commonly used opioids include:

• morphine

• heroin

• oxycodone

• fentanyl

• codeine

• hydromorphone

While opioids can be an effective part of pain management for medically supervised patients, opioid addiction and overdose is a significant challenge in Ontario.

Naloxone only reverses overdoses from opioids. It will not reverse overdoses from other kinds of drugs, such as benzodiazepines or stimulants like cocaine and amphetamines.

Once the legislative requirement is in effect, Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development’s inspectors will take an education-first approach to enforcement.

A new Naloxone in the Workplace Program has been established to support initial compliance. Under this program eligible employers can:

• access free naloxone training for up to two workers per workplace; and/or

• receive one free nasal spray naloxone kit per workplace.

The MLITSD will be partnering with two (2) program providers to help deliver the Workplace Naloxone Program:

1. The Canadian Red Cross (COURSE: First Aid for Opioid Poisoning Emergencies)

2. St. John Ambulance Canada (COURSE: Opioid Poisoning Response Training)

Detailed information on the legislative requirements can be found athttps://www.ontario.ca/page/naloxone-workplace
