UNY Oswego music faculty member Paul Leary has been working hard during winter break to finish a composition that meshes music and science, computer programming and artistic skills — all set to visual and audio offerings from NASA’s vast public archives.

Titled “Larger Than Us,” the multimedia piece will premiere Sunday, Jan. 20, in a Society of New Music concert at the Museum of Science and Technology in Syracuse. The society and museum are dedicating the evening to a mission in outer space a half-century ago.

Thanks to sophisticated software and hundreds of NASA photos he’s animated, Leary makes the galaxies spiral and the planets rotate and the stars sparkle — all set to original music provided by electronic instruments that Leary has built and a seven-piece chamber ensemble that will perform live on

stage.

The video of Leary’s other-worldly electronic composition — though not a full-dome presentation at this time — will premiere at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, in the IMAX Theatre at the MOST, 500 S. Franklin St. His “Larger Than Us” will tandem with Charles Fussell’s “The Astronaut’s Tale,” a staged chamber opera modeled after Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale.”

The concert celebrates the 50th anniversary of America’s Apollo 8 manned mission to lunar orbit, which served as a precursor to the mission that gave the world the first man on the moon.

The Society of New Music commissions, at most, one composition a year, and Leary said he was proud to earn the commission in 2018.

“I’ve always been interested in science and space, in general,” said Leary, who specializes in electronic

music and has a doctorate in composition from Duke University. “One of the biggest reasons I agreed to do this is that everything NASA publishes is in the public domain.”

Adobe’s After Effects software enables Leary to animate sequential NASA photos — taken during the Hubble space telescope mission, among others — causing celestial objects to move in the video at a visible rate of rotation. A set of puppet tools allows Leary to bend images according to the positions of pins that he places and moves, simulating motion for three-second intervals, after which the images would begin to deform.

A great deal of computer programming — and some carpentry — has gone into the production, Leary said.

The device uses an accelerometer and a magnetometer to send data back to a computer, electronically changing the pitches and tempos of traditionally produced music.

Another of Leary’s homegrown musical instruments is a set of bicycle wheels with Hall effect sensors installed, which uses magnets and an accelerometer to produce haunting electronic effects from, for example, a flute that Leary plays.

“It’s so satisfying to make things,” Leary said.

“People just love those bike wheels.”

Leary — a recital of his original music — will take place Feb. 10 as part of the SUNY Oswego music department’s Focus on Faculty series.

The composer, who also has master’s degrees from Duke and the Cleveland Institute of Music, teaches both introductory and advanced electronic music, as well as songwriting, a music theory course and a “music and business” course. 10 Tips for a Strong Academic Finish

erhaps you started the fall semester with a bit more enthusiasm than the spring semester. Everything felt fresh and new and you could start a line-up of classes with a fresh slate.

Now that you’re halfway through the year, you may feel a little study weary.

Try these tips for finishing the year strong.

Get enough rest. No one 1. can function sensibly without a good night’s sleep.

Plan your work and fun so that you can get enough sleep most nights of the week.

Eat right. Just as with rest, 2. you need a proper diet to study well and stay healthy.

Keep wholesome snacks in your room, such as cheese and whole grain crackers,

hummus, fresh produce, green tea and popcorn.

Reduce consumption of processed foods, sweets and soda.

Exercise regularly. You’ll 3. have a clearer head and healthier body. While time is

precious to college students, you can sneak in a few workouts every week. Instead of hanging out with friends sedentarily, go for a run or lift weights together. Perform body weight exercises or walk in place in your room while reviewing class notes.

Manage stress. Since 4. eliminating all stress isn’t possible, manage the stress that comes your way by taking a short time each day to do something pleasurable.

Studying 24/7 won’t help you improve your grades.

5.

Drop unhealthy friendships.

Some “friends” use others by dumping all their emotional baggage on them without offering anything in return. That’s one example of a toxic relationship. Others can include people who create drama to draw attention to themselves; those who repeatedly prove they’re unreliable or untrustworthy; and people who ride on the popularity of others. All of these behaviors waste your time and energy. No one’s perfect; however, people who consistently drag you down don’t deserve your friendship.

Ask for help as needed.

Your professor really wants you to succeed, so

ask for help if you struggle to understand the material, how to write a paper or how you should tackle a project.

The teacher may suggest a tutor from the class. Or, you can seek one yourself. Students who frequently raise their hands or make good comments likely earn good grades.

Ask for extra credit projects.

8.

If your grade slips a bit (or a lot!) ask the teacher for

an extra credit project or extra reading to help bring up your grade. Again, professors want you to do well.

Focus on your schoolwork.

9.

While that may seem really obvious, it’s easy to

let extra-curricular activities sidetrack you from your academic objectives. Let a few of the former go so you can buckle down and improve your grades.

Look to your future. The 10. struggles you encounter now make you stronger, smarter and better for your life after graduation.

Join a study group. You 6. may find that others’ insights on the class ma-

terials help you learn and remember more than only

raduation is a scary time for senior students. Some may be graduating a semester late, a semester early or right on time.

Cassidy Chainyk, a senior graduating in May, is sad that she is graduating, but is also nervous and scared of the future.

“Oswego has broadened my horizons and showed me how much different life is and can be,” Chainyk said.

“It showed me how much else is outside of my town I grew up in.”

Chainyk is spending the spring semester student teaching, preparing herself for the real world. She said she is excited to graduate.

registrar. For the upcoming spring graduation, she said they don’t have an exact number yet, but usually around 1,000-1,100 undergraduate students are eligible to graduate.

Julie Loney and Alex Masterson, both seniors at SUNY Oswego, graduated a semester early — last December.

Loney is a journalism and Spanish major, and is planning to take the GRE exam to open up her options of maybe going to graduate school for Spanish education.

Loney’s family lives in Long Island, so she is planning to apply to schools in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.

School at Oswego has helped Loney realize what she wants to do for her career.

“I took one major, then added another one very quickly because I wasn’t going to have enough credit,” Loney said. “Then I had an internship in the summer, came back and ended up studying abroad and fell in love with that.”

Loney spent a semester studying in Costa Rica, perfecting her Spanish speaking skills.

“If I didn’t have Oswego, I wouldn’t be able to do all these things to make me realize what I want to do with my future,” Loney said.

In the future, Loney would like to become a foreign language department head in an elementary or middle school. Before that,

she would like to teach and create curriculum.

“I want to start in a middle school, find a good school district, go and make curriculum for third, fourth and fifth grades, and eventually become a head of foreign language for a school district or a school.”

Masterson is a business major and he is hoping to get into the sports world and work in the front office of an organization. Masterson is in the process of applying for jobs on Long Island and is looking to potentially go to grad school to get his MBA in the fall.

So far, he has had an internship with Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Oswego, so he is applying for a part-time position there, and is also applying for a co-op position with TJX through SUNY Oswego.

Masterson said Oswego has helped him prepare for graduation over the last four years.

“Oswego has taught me a lot about professionalism, public speaking and organizational skills that will translate into the work environment,” Masterson said.

Loney said she is excited to graduate and is more nervous about finding housing when she’s older than she is about finding a job when she gets out of college.

As for graduating, Masterson said he feels scared but also excited.

“It’s scary and exciting at the same time,” Masterson said. “I’m excited to get life started, but upset that my time at Oswego is coming to an end.”

CNN Commentator to Speak at Jan. 30 MLK Celebration

ymone Sanders, a CNN political commentator who formerly was national press secretary for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, will appear as guest speaker at SUNY Oswego’s 30th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in Waterman Theatre of Tyler Hall. Doors open at 6 for this free, but ticketed, event.

The free tickets are available at tickets.oswego.edu or can be reserved at the Marano Campus Center Box Office, 315-312-3073.

Sanders rose to prominence at age 25 when New Hampshire Democrat Bernie Sanders (no relation) named her his campaign’s national press secretary — the youngest on record. She appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of 16 young Americans shaping the 2016 election.

Presidential politics and Sanders first intersected when she was 16 years old.

She introduced former president Bill Clinton at a luncheon in Omaha, prompting him to say, “Symone spoke so well I really hate to follow her” and later writing about her in his book “Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World.”

The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at SUNY Oswego began in 1989 when Tony Henderson, a former residence hall director, and

Duane Amie Oudenhoven, former housing director, believed that even though the college was on winter break on the national Martin Luther King Day, the college should celebrate the civil rights leader in some way.

Today, the celebration occurs after students return for spring semester.

Henderson also was an advisor to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at Oswego, and he had the service organization host the program each year.

grads can’t afford one. Most people aren’t posting pictures of their rusty, late model, dented college cars right after graduation. So don’t let FOMO bring you out of line with reality.

Eating out all of the time

If your bank account, waistline or energy levels are telling you eating out is a bad idea, listen to them.

Sure, eating out is fun, but it’s not good for your budget or health when you do it all the time. It’s OK to say no to dining out every once in a while.

Working out every day

Overcoming FOMO Suffer from fear of missing out? Just say ‘No’

I

n our hyperconnected world, fear of missing out (FOMO) has become a very real thing. Anyone who spends time on social media or online shopping sites is smacked in the face with FOMO. When we scroll through our phones, we are greeted with a barrage of experiences and things people just like us are doing and buying. If our social media feeds are any indicator, there are at least a dozen amazing things we should be doing or buying this very second.

When we are inundated with this information, it’s easy to feel like our experiences and possessions pale in comparison to, well, everybody else’s.

The thing is, FOMO makes us do or buy things we may not really be interested in, have the time for or have the money for. If we let FOMO get the better of us, we are bound to feel emotionally and financially drained.

In many cases, FOMO has robbed us of the ability to differentiate between what we want to do and buy and what we think we should or buy. FOMO is a well-disguised thief, but we are enabling it.

So, with a new year upon

us, here is my advice on how to get the upper hand on FOMO. The first step is recognition. It’s time people reclaimed their self-preservation and bank accounts from FOMO’s clutches. Here is a list of things and experiences that you aren’t missing out on. Sure, some people are doing these things, but not nearly as much as social media feeds and online influencers are leading us to believe.

Going to every party

Most people aren’t posting pictures of themselves while wearing sweatpants, eating cheesy poofs and plopped in front of the TV. You may fear if you don’t say yes to every party invite, you are missing out. However, if you pay attention, there are people missing parties all the time. They just aren’t raving about missing parties and posting pics of themselves slouched over a book studying.

Joining every club

In a time when resume building is one of the main focuses of your life, it can seem counterintuitive to turn down extra-curricular activities. However, joining too many clubs or taking on

too much in the ones you are in can drain your brain and your body. Be smart about where you spend your time.

Most people aren’t saying yes to every opportunity, and those who are end up regretting it.

Buying name-brand everything

There are those people in our real lives and on social media who are totally hung up on labels. Brands are important to a lot of people, and we all have our favorites, but don’t let FOMO make you buy stuff you can’t afford or don’t really like. Alternatively, don’t let it keep you buying something you want or need, just because it isn’t a big brand.

Studying abroad

For those people with means, studying abroad is a great opportunity. However, you shouldn’t let FOMO make you do something you can’t afford. Taking on massive loans or driving up your debt for a two-week experience abroad isn’t wise. If you miss out on this one, the financial security will go a lot farther than the tiny bump in resume ratings.

Taking non-parentfunded vacations

Lots people post pics from their awesome vacations, but no one tells you who the funding source is for their good time. Chances are, people who take a lot of vacations are having their ways paid by their parents. Others are racking up crazy credit card debt. Don’t let FOMO make you spend money on a vacation you can’t afford.

Buying high-end makeup

Don’t feel bad if you have to buy your makeup from a drugstore. Chances are, most of your peers are doing the very same thing.

People may carry on about how awesome their $40 mascara is, but it was probably a Christmas or birthday present and not something they get to have all of time. Don’t feel like you need to keep up with them.

Buying a new car after graduation

It may seem like a lot of people are treating themselves to a new car after graduation, but they aren’t.

Dealerships offer incentives in early summer hoping to persuade you that you need a new car, but most recent

Sure, some of your friend’s Instagram feeds may make you feel like they are lifting weights and doing hot yoga almost every day, but the reality is, most of them aren’t.

Don’t beat yourself up if you can only exercise three times a week. That’s what many people are actually doing.

Eating healthy every day

There are always those handful of social media friends who would make you think they eat kale salads and protein smoothies for every meal. Most of them don’t, but people often want to project a certain image. In the case of your health food connections, it’s an image of self-control and constant discipline. Those people aren’t posting the wrappers of the 20 mini snickers bars they ate at midnight when their stomach was rumbling.

Getting the season’s hottest new phone

Most people aren’t telling you to check out their three-year-old phone or a hand-me-down phone from their parents. People aren’t calling attention to their phone with a cracked screen.

The only people showing off their phones are those with hot, new phones. So, it’s easy to feel like everyone has one.

Saying yes to every request

It may seem like saying no to an opportunity is a bad choice, but saying yes to everything is exhausting. Don’t spread yourself too thin just because you are afraid to say no. Focus on a few things and do them well. Saying yes to everything and doing them poorly or with mediocrity won’t put you ahead of your peers. It will leave you tired and behind. Tell FOMO you deserve better.

Keeping up with Jacob Alexander Earlier in the series: SUNY Oswego student commuter moves from Stertling to Oswego

rapping up his junior year at SUNY Oswego, Jacob Alexander said last fall that time management sometimes challenged him. It’s little wonder, as he was pretty busy.

He rented a house off-campus with three other technology major students, meaning more responsibility for household chores and cooking.

“They’re all tech heads, too,” Alexander said. “We have most of the same classes. It’s a lot of fun.”

He also served as president for Team Mini, which clears the ice and promotes school spirit during Oswego hockey games. Team Mini tosses T-shirts to members of the audience using a robot.

Alexander also leads the Oswego Technology Student Association, which is in charge of planning the annual trip to the Technology and Engineering Education Collegiate Association’s technology competition and job fair in Virginia Beach, Va. But practice is apparently making perfect for the Sterling native.

“It’s a lot easier,” Alexander said. “I got used to going to clubs, making the meetings and organizing the whole thing. It’s always easier the second time around.”

Instead of commuting from the home of his parents, Ron and Patti Alexander, living in the same city as his school spared Alexander 40 minutes’ commuting time a day, which helped him better keep up with studies and

activities.

“The semester was good,” Alexander said. “I had full classes and we went to Rehoboth Beach, Del., for multiple tech competitions and went to a job fair.”

Though he enjoyed the networking experience, he wasn’t concerned about making connections in the industry, as he hopes to settle and teach within about an hour’s drive of Sterling, perhaps in Syracuse or a smaller town.

“Classes went well and I passed everything, which is good,” Alexander said. “I’ll try to do the same for spring.

I might join another club.”

He said he really enjoyed classes led by Judith Belt, Richard Bush and Daniel Tryon.

He advises other students to get involved on campus. “Go to clubs,” he said. “There’s an involvement fair at the beginning of any semester. Join a few and if you don’t like it, you don’t have to stay.”

He has found that it also helps to “make friends within your class if you need help studying or you need someone to work with.”

While getting a job can help with tuition, it’s also important to figure out the whole school routine.

“First semester, just get used to your class semester and then next semester get a job,” Alexander said.

Once you feel like you’re getting the swing of things, he thinks it’s a good idea to find work, both for the income and also to meet new people.

17 Non-Boozy Fun Things to Do in College

or some college students, drinking is just part of everyday life.

But it doesn’t have to be. Before you label me as uncool, preachy or out of touch, let me set the record straight.

I’m not here to take stake with drinking. I’m not here to tell people not to drink.

I’m not here to make a case for or against state liquor laws.

None of my opinions on those topics really matter.

To me, what matters is facts.

The fact is, there are other ways to have fun in college besides getting silly, aggressively or incapacitatingly drunk.

So, if you aren’t really into drinking or want to take a break from the drinking scene, here are some things to do that don’t involve drinking. Some of these things could even be fun, informative or memorable.

The thing is, you have to be in the right state of mind first. You have to be open to alternatives.

Eat at the local businesses — Don’t just patronize places at 2 a.m. Oswego and Fulton have a lot of great local eateries. Make yourself a bucket list and check them off one bite at a time.

Oswego Cinema — Oswego has a movie theater.

It shows 3-D movies. It has those fancy reclining seats.

It’s located right off the bus line. It has everyone’s favorite neon-yellow popcorn.

Indulge.

Music Hall — There is a music hall in Oswego that hosts indie talent. Did you know that? I sure as heck didn’t when I was in college. Tickets are economically priced and available to the public. Check it out at www.oswegomusichall.org/.

Go Ice Skating — There is no shortage of ice rinks in and around Oswego. Get a group of friends together and try out your skills at open skating. Sometimes, you should try (and maybe) fail at something outside of

Join a club or organization — There are so many clubs and organizations at SUNY Oswego and Cayuga County Community College, there is sure to be at least one that suits your preferences.

Waterman Theatre — This theater is right on the SUNY Oswego campus. It features student talent and national acts. See events and dates at www.oswego.edu/ theatre/theatre-0.

Downtown Oswego features a variety of great places to eat. Try a seared duck breast at the Bistro 197, for example.

Make a sign — There is a make-your-own sign shop in Oswego. Out of fear of appearing preferential, I won’t share its name, but you can go there and buy stencil, woodwork or paint for a very reasonable price.

It’s cathartic.

Hiking — There are a lot of great places to hike in the Oswego area, but two stand out. Rice Creek Field Station (which is near the Fallbrook Recreation Center) and Sterling Nature Center.

You can also sled, ski or snowshoe at these locations.

Sterling Nature Center is also home to a heron rookery. In the spring, you can watch baby herons hang out. How cool is that?

Antiquing — Oswego County has a multitude of antique shops. Grab some friends or fly solo and check out what local shops have to offer. You might just pick up the best conversation-starter ever for your dorm room.

Game night — Humans like to play games. We are living in the golden age of games. No longer do we have to restrain ourselves to proper or predictable games.

If you have offbeat taste, there is a game to suit your palate. Find it, buy it and play it with friends.

Salmon River Falls — If you have a car or access to one, there is a spectacular waterfall located just north of Oswego. The Salmon River Unique Area is maintained by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and it’s home to the Salmon River Falls. This 110-foot waterfall and the trails surrounding it are sure to put a little awe in your day.

Buy a book — Not the $125 type you buy for class. Buy one that you can read because you really and truly want to. Buy one that makes you laugh or opens your mind. People don’t usually regret time spent reading.

Crafting — There are places in and around Oswego to buy crafting supplies. Sure crafting sounds like the stuff middle-aged women are made of, but it doesn’t have to be. Have inappropriately themed craft nights. No one is monitoring what shapes you use as embellishments.

Fishing — People come from around the globe to fish in Oswego County (really). If you are even a little into fishing, give it a shot while you are here.

Pick up a ball or frisbee — Of course, you may need a couple months to do this outside. Find someone to be on the receiving end of that ball or frisbee. If you can’t or don’t want to recruit a friend, try out something like frisbee golf.

Volunteer — Very few things are as universally beneficial as volunteering.

swego has become home to around 8,000 students who attend SUNY Oswego each year.

There are lots of things to do around town when students are not doing schoolwork or are attending events on campus.

Oswego has a movie theater, great restaurants,

bars, coffee shops, specialty stores, several parks to watch the sunset, the H. Lee White Marine museum and a number of events each semester. In the fall, people from other states come to the Oswego River to fish, which is an experience for people to watch.

a SUNY Oswego junior, spends her weekends playing video games and catching up on sleep, but also goes off campus to the Oswego movie theater, located on West 2nd Street.

“I think the point of college normally starts when you turn 21,” Miesner said.

and seeing movies with friends on the weekends, so I’m completing my college experience to the best of my ability.”

Miesner suggest students go to the movie theater because hanging out with friends in a low-key environment is important, she said.

In the fall, Miesner goes apple picking, pumpkin picking and holds long movie marathons with her friends in their rooms.

“I think that socializing is more important than going out and getting drunk,” Miesner said.

Sophomore Ben Grieco said he spent the fall semester getting used to being back on campus and participating in activities in the winter.

He spends his weekends working for the campus newspaper, radio station or television station covering the Oswego Lakers hockey games.

“It gives me a sense of what I want to do and is something for me to look forward to every weekend,” Grieco said.

Grieco said he feels he isn’t missing out on anything.

“I’m getting the college experience that I want and that helps my career,” Grieco said. “I’ll get the other half of my college experience when I do turn 21.”

Grieco said in his free time he would eventually like to visit all the museums in Oswego. Among the museums available in Oswego are the Safe Haven, Richardson-Bates House and Fort Ontario historic site.

Samantha Flavell, a senior, spends her weekends catching up on work. When she has the time she travels around Oswego going on photography adventures, watches movies at the Oswego movie theater, and even visits some of the nearby museums.

“Honestly, the weekends are when I play catchup,” Flavell said. “Between classes and work most of my weekdays are 12-15 hours. So, on the weekend I get ahead on homework, meal prep and do laundry.”

Flavell tries to make time for friends on the weekends.

“Sometimes its grabbing dinner, going to see a movie, or going on a photo adventure to get outside and have some fun,” Flavell said.

Top Job Hunting Tips

eniors, the time to start looking for a job is now — even though graduation may be months away.

You know the routine for searching job boards online; however, other means and strategies for job hunting bring results, too.

Seek a Company. Don’t look necessarily at a job opening but seek a company that aligns with your career goals and offers room for advancement. Companies prefer having resumes on hand in advance of hiring needs to reduce recruiting efforts.

Learn all you can about the company before submitting a thoughtful, targeted cover letter and resume. Avoid sending blanket covers and resumes. Don’t shoot too high; it takes years of experience to land a mid-level job.

Network through social media. Put out the feelers both on personal social media sites, like Facebook, and also professional sites, like LinkedIn. But make your approach appropriate to the tone of each. Especially on

professional sites, post about any academic accomplishments, volunteering news or other updates that would help promote your interest in the field. Also post thoughtful comments about others’ posts. But don’t limit yourself to only virtual networking.

Network in person. Order business cards printed with your contact info, educational background, career interests and link to your website and social media. (Sites such as www.vistaprint.com sell low-cost professional cards.)

Dress appropriately and hand out your cards as you talk with people at conferences, workshops or expos related to your industry, general business events — as a student, you may be able to attend free or at a discount.

Attend city board meetings.

Business leaders often attend these and you may learn more about local companies.

Go to any open house events or mixers held by companies in your industry. It’s also OK to politely spark conversa-

tion with random strangers at a coffee shop, for example, who may know hiring.

hile it may be easiest to simply apply at the local fast food joints, working an offbeat job may pay significantly more and require skills related to your future career. Finding employment in unusual places can also help better ensure that you’ll even get a job, as typical seasonal and entry-level jobs tend to fill up quickly.

“The summer job market isn’t what its used to be,” said Mike Carr, president Carr Recruiting Solutions in Baldwinsville. “As a college student, you’re competing with high school kids who

are already in those positions.”

Carr said that for students who really need to earn money, they can work some “less glamorous jobs” or start their own Carr business, which can demonstrate “ingenuity and effort” — in

addition to skills in branding, marketing, promoting and personal relations.

Todd Consilio, vice president of business operations for Staffworks’ nine Central New York locations, advises students to seek whatever interning positions their school guidance counselors offer. But if those opportunities don’t work out, students should “leverage what they have: their state-of-the-art education.”

For some, that could mean less-obvious work opportunities.

Tutor. You don’t have to channel Mary Poppins, but

Ask your parents and their friends. While some of their generation may not be as astute with social media, they likely know many people well-established in business who know about companies looking for people like you.

feel good about giving back, volunteering gives you excellent real-life experience, additional entries for your resume and opportunities to meet people in the industry.

Go part-time. Work parttime or freelance/consult within your industry and/ or skill set. While it may be overwhelming to work fulltime while attending school, many find part-time work doable and a segue to a fulltime job once they graduate, whether it’s with the same company or another.

Childcare provider. If you love children and your degree is in humanities, you may be a good fit to work as a care provider for young children at home for summer vacation from pre-K and elementary school.

“Services are looking for qualified caregivers,” Consilio said. Stellar references are necessary.

Senior helper.

“About 30,000 people a day are retiring,” Consilio said. “A lot of them will eventually need assisted living. They would like to stay home.”

Though for some, these needs are ongoing, some working people may need help while an elderly parent recovers from surgery or an injury. This could include light housework, meal preparation, driving for errands and companionship.

Like childcare providing, you’ll need some rock-solid references.

Yard work.

“It’s definitely a summer

need,” Consilio said. “We work with several larger cemeteries and they do a lot of maintenance throughout the summer.”

Many home and business owners also need more help this time of years.

Camp worker. Another good job for outdoorsy types, a camp counselor needs skills such as teaching, leadership, and planning, which can segue into numerous career paths.

“We have positions at summer camps that they’re looking for adult counselors to work with children on projects like art or hiking or swimming,” Consilio said.

“It might appeal to people looking into teaching or athletic careers.”

Wait staff. But only if you go for a high-end restaurant.

Tips commensurate with bigger tabs. While hosting may seem a step up from serving, many restaurants let only servers get tips, so serving pays more. If the place lets you perform some planning and leading, hosting may be better for you if money isn’t a huge motivator.

A

s students returned for the new academic year, they noticed some changes in dining halls and cafes on campus.

Plastic straws have been replaced with paper straws, plastic condiment cups were replaced with paper and plastic coffee stirrers have been replaced with wooden ones.

In an academic year, SUNY Oswego goes through 137,000 plastic straws, according to Jamie Adams, the SUNY Oswego sustainability planning coordinator. Those plastic straws have now been pulled from the waste stream. Students are now allowed to bring in reusable coffee cups to the dining hall, in order to cut down the waste of disposable cups. “[Reusable cups] and the straws are a real game changer,” Adams said. “I think it’ll be a point at which students are given more power or control over choices as far as sustainable living goes.”

The students using their voices, and making sure they are being heard, is what pushed the changes, Adams said.

“We don’t know what the students want until they tell us,” Adams said. “We want the students to know they are being heard. We do take

action and make this their community.”

Fighting for the environment is hard to do, because it’s a faceless fight, said Omar van Reenan, the SUNY Oswego Student Association president.

As a student representative, van Reenan has worked with the campus community to help reduce the carbon footprint and bring sustainable options to campus.

“It’s easy to advocate for certain issues humanity faces — from refugee crisis to genocide and equal pay — because those as you can put a face to it,” van Reenan said.

“With the environment, it

takes a little more work.”

Namibia, a country in Africa where van Reenan is from, was the first country in the world to enshrine protection of the environment in its constitution, he said. van Reenan has worked with student organizations and had conversations with students, where the sustainable practices from our campus had been brought up. When Auxiliary Services introduced plastic cups in dining halls, it surpassed the detrimental concerns students had on how the campus puts its best ecofriendly step forward.

Sustainability has been a campus focus since 2007,

when the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) act was signed. Under ACUPCC, SUNY Oswego would develop efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, implementing sustainable practices by 2050.

Adams said the challenge they have been facing is reducing waste in general.

“Our office has been pushing plastic waste reduction,” Adams said. “After last year’s plastic cups, it led to the president’s advisory council taking a look at our plastic waste.”

Adams said some students have not liked the

paper straws because they get soggy. She said Auxiliary Services is looking for other alternatives.

“That’s been the biggest negative response we’ve gotten,” Adams said. “Hopefully Auxiliary Services can find something more accommodating.”

Adams is hoping students will take advantage of the Centro bus system to reduce the number of cars around campus each day.

She hopes to make it more convenient for students.

Adams has found if students are presented with the more sustainable options, they are going to take them.

Also, there has been a lot of talk about turning the campus plastic-free, Adams said.

“I think it’s a lofty goal but it is definitely achievable,” Adams said.

The result of a plastic free campus movement is evident now, more than ever, Student Association President van Reenan said.

“Fighting for the environment starts now, and keeping our campus accountable for its pledged to sustainability is our duty as students,” van Reenan said.

“We, the students, set the standards for sustainability on our campus. We believe that fighting for the environment is always worth it.”

Two new positions were added by van Reenan to the president’s cabinet: director of sustainability and assistant director of sustainability.

These positions will seek to implement sustainability goals the campus has set.

“We would like to become a plastic-free campus, promote sustainable best practices to reduce our carbon footprint, hold our Student Association accountable for implementing environment-centered policies within our clubs and organizations, advocating for food-recovery networks on our campus, celebrating the paramount importance of Earth Week, and urging our local legislators to commit to uplifting our committees forward to a more sustainable future.”

Educational Leadership Grads: Motivated, Engaged — and Employed

M

ost graduates of SUNY Oswego CAS program employed less than two months after graduation — many as school principals, assistant principals SUNY Oswego’s program leading to a certificate of advanced study (CAS) in educational leadership has grown more than 30 percent since 2011. About nine in every 10 CAS participants have started jobs in school administration within two months of graduation.

The CAS program’s leaders and graduates credited, among other things, real-life collaborative projects aimed at actual improvements in school districts around the region; future-oriented and evidence-based deep dives into trends in education; and a loyal and nurturing network of faculty, fellow graduates and established school administrators.

“We believe in authentic learning,” said Angela Perrotto, chairwoman of the educational leadership programs in SUNY Oswego’s School of Education. “Our curriculum is filled with real issues in real schools and real people with real data, working with real administrative teams and teachers on improving student achievement.”

She added, “Although our students are learning about researched best prac-

tices, they are learning about them by applying them inside schools.”

Perrotto’s own data show that the vast majority of Oswego’s CAS students each year take administrative positions by Oct. 1, less than two months after graduation.

This fall, for example, eight became school principals and 10 were hired as assistant principals; at the district level, four are directors, one assistant director, four coordinators and one dean.

‘Real-time experiences’

Tim Filiatrault moved into the principal’s chair at Sandy Creek Elementary School in July 2017, completing the yearlong CAS program, including an internship, this August. He valued the graduate experience highly. “The coursework, the professors, the staff — they’ve been there, they’ve had the experience, they’ve been in those [administrative] positions themselves,” he said.

Perrotto said the program makes its students a promise: “We promise we’re going to have 30 to 35 practicing administrators working with them: new ones and veterans; anywhere from a director, an assistant superintendent, a principal, an assistant principal; representing urban, rural and suburban districts.”

Sandy Creek Elementary School Principal Tim Filiatrault, a graduate of SUNY Oswego’s certificate of advanced studies program (CAS), shares a book with young readers. Some 85 percent of 2018 participants in the CAS educational leadership program had jobs in school administration within the first two months of graduation.

Filiatrault worked with CAS program colleague Dan Hammond and administrators in LaFargeville Central School District on an initiative to place Chromebooks in the hands of every ninththrough 12th-grader. “We did the background work, the legwork, we worked with the technical people,” he said.

In the end, the top administrators and board of education accepted the proposal and scaled it up to seventh- through 12th-graders, said Filiatrault, who noted that his own children were in the district. “LaFargeville is in the second full year of implementation and I hear that it’s going very well.”

Following her August 2016 CAS graduation, Melissa Perkowski began as Honeoye Central School District’s director of curriculum, instruction and assessment.

“I had multiple opportunities in the program for authentic learning — real-life, real-time experiences engaging with leaders in the region who

were already working in administration,” she said.

Perkowski specifically mentioned an action research project in one district to find root causes and options for overcoming difficulties in literacy assessments; another assignment, in one of her final courses, involved preparing a strategic plan and having the data and other research ready to garner support for the plan among her peers.

Pam Michel, dean of SUNY Oswego’s School of Education, said she’s been delighted to hear from school district administrators about the CAS program’s collaborative projects.

“The superintendents tell me our students come into their schools and work with a team to solve a serious challenge in the district,” Michel said. “The superintendents are very respectful of that. The students come up with a plan for addressing the situation, and it seems like in almost every instance it’s utilized. That’s

something that I think sets us apart.”

‘Faculty engagement’

Eva Williams, principal at Van Duyn Elementary School in Syracuse, graduated with her CAS six years ago, but she keeps in contact with the program’s leaders and her cohort of graduates and still takes value from the program that enabled her to move into administration. “We all came with such diverse backgrounds and experiences,” she said. “There was a lot to learn from each other.”

“I am an outgoing person, but at the time I didn’t see myself in a leadership role,” Williams said. “I became more confident (during Oswego’s CAS program) in my ability to lead. That comes from a lot of support and engagement from peers and faculty in the department.” She added, “I’m so grateful to Oswego for my education and having that support and belief in me.”

Team Wins National Competition for Inclusive Web Design

F

ive SUNY Oswego students under the mentorship of graphic design faculty member Rebecca Mushtare recently won the national AIR-U competition for accessibility in web design for the team’s inclusive work on the Vote Oswego site.

Knowbility, an Austin-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the independence in technology of children and adults with disabilities, sponsored the University Accessibility Internet Rally to encourage students to work toward a

more inclusive digital web for all.

Mushtare served, essentially, as creative director of a team that included students Mariana Diaz, Kimberly Grunden, Nicole Lightfoot, Nick Long and Heng-Hao Pu. The team worked with a client, political science faculty member Allison Rank’s “Vote Oswego” class, which promotes electoral and political participation by all, regardless of affiliation.

Mushtare focuses on in a course that combines “Web Media II” for undergraduates and “Graduate Web Design” for master’s degree candidates.

“They thought the aesthetic and visual design [of VoteOswego.com] was great,” she said. “Our team was making live revisions and updates to the site, and that was also noted by the judges.”

While it takes work to make sure web content and design are accessible to people with auditory, cognitive, neurological,

physical, speech and visual disabilities, the students on SUNY Oswego’s team found it an enjoyable, motivating project.

Grunden, a dual major in information science and graphic design, said her biggest takeaway from the competition was in structuring the project as it might go in a professional setting.

“This was my very first client project in web design,” she said. “I got a lot of experience in how the field works in the real world. I do think more people (in web design) need to focus on accessibil-

ity.”

“I really liked doing the [Vote Oswego] project with a small group of advanced students,” Mushtare said.

“It’s nice to see the team gel and work through issues and come to resolutions.”

SUNY Oswego recognizes that digital accessibility is essential to ensuring equity and inclusion, and understands that infrastructure and faculty support are needed to engrain accessibility within the fabric of the college.

Studying in Australia Journalism student shares her experience living abroad

S

ome students at SUNY Oswego come to college knowing they want the experience of studying abroad. Jamie Aranoff, a senior from Long Island, did just that. She spent last spring studying in Australia.

“I have always had a passion for travel and exploring new places, so it was something I just knew would become a part of my college experience,” she said.

Australia was an easy choice for Aranoff because she always wanted to visit that part of the world. It’s far away, so students have to really commit to traveling there, and Aranoff said spending a semester there was a perfect opportunity.

She studied at Bond University, which is an hour south of Brisbane in a region known as the Gold Coast.

Aranoff is a journalism major and wanted to study somewhere she could absorb the media in her native language. She said she was

drawn to the culture and lifestyle on the region.

While being away from family and friends for five months, Aranoff’s biggest challenge was leaving.

“The time change was 15 hours ahead of home, which presented a challenge,” Aranoff said. “When I had to get paperwork and other logistical things ready for school, it made everything more difficult. But I want to go back.”

Aranoff did a lot of traveling while she was studying abroad. She said even though she had five months in Australia, it was not enough.

She traveled to Sydney, Melbourne and Airlie Beach, around the Great Barrier Reef, Whitsunday Islands.

“Australia is a massive country,” Aranoff said. “It’s bigger than a lot of people realize. It’s roughly the size of the U.S.” She also traveled to Bali, Bangkok, Phuket, Thailand, Singapore and New Zealand,

racking up airline miles, she said.

“I loved everything about Australia,” Aranoff said.

As she is planning her life after graduation in May, she is considering going back. She enjoyed the lifestyle that people in Australia have.

“A few of my favorite things are the laid-back, carefree lifestyle and healthier food options,” Aranoff said.

“I also like the weather, the beach and surfing.”

Aranoff said all students should study abroad.

“It definitely helps to get out of your comfort zone and really teaches you more about life skills, the world and yourself than any classroom every could,” Aranoff said.

Aranoff started the program studying abroad alone, not knowing anyone in the program. Now, she has friends from all over the world.

Modernized Criminal Justice Major Debuts

UNY Oswego has begun transitioning its public justice major to criminal justice, a move that modernizes the program, boosts its rigor in alignment with national standards and makes its name more recognizable to graduate schools and employers.

New students this fall had the option to enter SUNY Oswego as criminal justice majors, while existing majors could switch to criminal justice or opt to finish their college years in public justice. Those new to the discipline in the spring semester will declare a criminal justice major.

The SUNY system and the state education department approved the sweeping updates in curriculum. The college also has applied to rename the department as criminal justice.

Professor Roger Guy, chairman of the department, said criminal justice is far from just a name change.

Students have to take an additional nine credit hours’ worth of courses, some of them new and all of them subject to revisions and updates following a lengthy review of the nearly four-

decades-old public justice curriculum.

“The rigor also comes in with the research component,” Guy said. Core courses include “research methods in criminal justice,” “data analysis” and “seminar in criminal justice.” Introductory courses in policing, corrections and criminal justice are followed up with those in “American criminal courts and judicial processes” and “crime theories and victimization.”

Elective courses reflect the broad range of fields that rely on today’s criminal justice graduates: forensic anthropology, criminalistics chemistry, family systems, counseling, ethics and the law, program planning and evaluation, community policing and organized crime law enforcement, to name a few.

“To me, it’s reminiscent of a bachelor of science degree in a discipline,” said Guy. “Criminal justice leads to a bachelor of arts degree, but it’s a more intense program.”

Taqueria in Downtown Oswego Serves Authentic Mexican Food

R

ick Erickson, a local 33year veteran contractor, had long dreamed of changing career paths. After years of backbreaking construction work, Erickson’s body had had enough. His

heart was set on turning a growing fantasy of owning a restaurant into a reality.

Erickson first thought of starting a diner, but the idea never made it off the ground.

It was only after a close-

friend — Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow — suggested that Oswego could benefit from a popup taco stand in the middle of downtown that Erickson knew exactly what

kind of restaurant he wanted to build.

The venturous restaurateur began researching and planning in May 2018 and wasted no time in finding a location at 201 West 1st St. In September, he opened the business — River’s Edge Taqueria.

The business owner invested $140,000, a gamble which Erickson believes will pay off.

“I’ve always loved cooking and once our wonderful mayor gave me this idea, I jumped at the chance,” said Erickson. “I thought about it and put all the right pieces of the puzzle together to bring Oswego truly authentic Mexican food.”

As a native of Oswego himself, Erickson believes that there is no better place to bring his hard work and passion than his hometown.

The restaurant offers the usual Mexican fair of tacos, taco salad bowls, fajitas, burritos, and quesadillas with one simple promise, to deliver Mexican food that is truly authentic. “Authentic Mexican food is the foundation of what River’s Edge Taqueria is,” says Erickson.

Though Erickson is new to the food business, he prides himself in using only the freshest and best ingredients, a factor which he stresses upon and believes

sets his restaurant apart. All of the restaurant’s sauces and salsas; along with the taco shells and tortilla chips, are homemade. You can feel his passion for what he does and it shows in the food that Taqueria has to offer.

River’s Edge Taqueria is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

It’s closed on Sunday.

Erickson says the hours will expand when the weather gets warmer with late night hours on the weekends to catch the bar crowd. The restaurant currently offers takeout or delivery, but Erickson believes by late spring the restaurant will expand to provide a sit-down dining experience and will serve beer and wine.

My Take at the Food After personally trying the steak fajitas, I would recommend any lover of Mexican food to visit this establishment. River’s Edge Taqueria is in a great location in the heart of the town and has a sweet family-owned, local-business charm you won’t be able to find anywhere.

Taco Bell Comes to Fulton, then Oswego Mexican fast food restaurant opens in Fulton as owners plan second location in Oswego

A

new Taco Bell franchise just opened in Fulton.

The a 2,150 sq. ft. store in Fulton is owned Hospitality Syracuse, Inc., a company based in Cicero that operates 50 Taco Bell and other franchises, employing 2,000 people.

Fulton’s Taco Bell is located at 501-505 S. Second St. (state Route 481), south and across the street from Huhtamaki. The location will employ 60 people, 10 to 15 of them fulltime. Hospitality Syracuse, Inc. bought the property from the city of Fulton for $110,000.

The company plans a second store for Oswego County in the spring — in Oswego, at the former building used by Ponderosa Restaurant on the corner of George Street and state Route 104.

Oswego’s Taco Bell will be similar to Fulton’s, according to Jessica Woodburn, marketing director for Hospitality Syracuse, Inc..

Woodburn expects construction to begin in Oswego by spring and to end approximately 90 days later for an opening in the summer. The front of the new restaurant will sit more toward state Route 104 with an entrance and exit on both Route 104 and George Street, according to Woodburn. The entire corner will be leased from real estate developer Rocklyn Development, Inc. of Cicero, rather than purchased, unlike the property in Fulton.

Woodburn does not foresee any other future Taco Bell development in the county, though she didn’t absolutely rule out the possibility.

here’s no fire, and they don’t smell bad. What’s so bad about e-cigarettes?

Plenty, say area experts.

It may seem like e-cigarettes, also called electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), offer safe smoking or aid in quitting tobacco, but that’s not so, according to Deb Mendzef, coordinator at the CNY Regional Center for Tobacco Health Systems at St. Joseph’s Health.

“They continue the cycle of addiction and cause harm to the body,” Mendzef said.

“ENDS are not safer than traditional cigarettes.”

Starting nicotine now can make the addiction much, much harder to break later.

“Ninety-five percent of adult smokers began smoking before they turned 21,” Mendzef said.

ENDS also act as a gateway to smoking traditional cigarettes. Mendzef said that youth using ENDS are up to seven times as likely to use regular cigarettes someday.

What’s worse is that the chemicals ENDS contain are harmful for users.

JUUL, a popular brand, states on its website that their product “contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm,” according to California Proposition 65.

“There is growing evidence that ENDS products contain many harmful chemicals that can have a negative effect on the body when inhaled or ingested,” said Christopher Owens, director of the CNY Regional Center for Tobacco Health Systems at St. Joseph’s Health.

They include formaldehyde, toluene, cadmium, lead, nickel and benzene.

No long-term research is available to show how much damage these can cause.

“We don’t know the long-term effects of e-cigarettes,” said physician Leslie J. Kohman, who serves on the board of directors of the Eastern Division Board of the American Cancer Society and works as a thoracic surgeon specializing in thoracic oncology at Upstate Medical University.

She quoted a 2018 report by the National Academies of Science, Engineering and

Medicine (NASEM), which found the effect of e-cigarette use on cigarette smoking initiation to be causal, concluding that “There is substantial evidence that e-cigarette use increases risk of ever using combustible tobacco cigarettes among youth and young adults.”

The NASEM report also concluded, “There is moderate evidence that e-cigarette use increases the frequency of subsequent combustible tobacco cigarette use” among youth and young adults.

Mike Seilback serves as the vice president of Advocacy and Communications for the American Lung Association Northeast. He said that the novelty of the devices, along with the appealing flavors have helped sell the

idea of e-cigarettes to teens and young adults, most of whom have no idea they foster addiction to nicotine.

“The tobacco industry is continually going to look for replacement customers,” Seilback said. “We need to

remain vigilant because we don’t know what the longterm effects will be on this generation of youth that’s starting these products and will face a hard time quitting them.”

hat’s new for fitness in 2019? Local fitness experts offer their top picks for the coming year’s hottest trends.

• “In 2018 we saw a huge boom with interest in HIIT-[high intensity interval training] style training, what I’m reading in my industry magazines now leads me to believe this will continue but we will also see more express style workouts and classes for those short on time. You can get a lot done in 30 minutes if you know what you’re doing.

• “Personal training will continue to be popular as I believe people will always have the need for personal accountability and to ensure they are exercising safely. As we age, our bodies change.

It’s exciting to exercise in a large group but when you have old injuries or specific functional goals you’ll be better off under the direct su-

pervision and instruction of a degreed, certified personal trainer.”

• “They’re not always ‘new’ trends, but moving up or down in popularity.

They can do so many more things. The trackers can work when you’re on indoor equipment. Now it can track when you’re on an elliptical. They can track calories, amount of sleep, sitting time — which is a big deal now.

mental health Report: 1 in 5 College Students So Stressed They Consider Suicide

ollege can be so stressful that many students think about killing themselves, and some even try, a new study suggests.

Among more than 67,000 students surveyed, over 20 percent said they experienced stressful events in the last year that were strongly associated with mental health problems, including harming themselves and suicidal thoughts or attempts, researchers found.

“What’s striking about our findings is that there is a disproportionate number of students who are reporting a large number of exposures to stress they believe is traumatic or difficult to overcome,” said lead researcher Cindy Liu. She directs the developmental risk and cultural disparities program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

“There are some stresses that are exceeding the capacity of students to cope,” she added.

Stressful events defined as traumatic or difficult to handle included: academic pressures; career issues; death of a family member or friend; family problems; intimate and other social relationships; finances; health problems of a family member or partner; personal appearance; personal health problems and sleep difficulties.

Liu’s team found that three out of four students had experienced at least one stressful event in the previous year. And more than 20 percent experienced six or more stressful events in the past year.

Among these students, one in four said they had been diagnosed with or treat-

ed for a mental health problem. Furthermore, 20 percent of all students surveyed thought about suicide, 9 percent had attempted suicide, and nearly 20 percent injured themselves.

These problems were particularly acute among transgender students, with about two-thirds saying that they had hurt themselves and more than one-third saying they had attempted suicide.

In addition, more than half of bisexual students said they had suicidal thoughts and had harmed themselves.

More than a quarter of these students had attempted suicide, the researchers found.

Liu said the rate of students suffering from depression or anxiety is much higher now than it was in 2009, when the last survey was conducted.

Among gay, lesbian and bisexual students, for example, rates for suicidal thoughts were higher than in 2009 — 58 percent vs. 48 percent. They were also higher for attempted suicides — 28 percent vs. 25 percent — and for self-injury, 51 percent vs 45 percent.

Liu also said as students progress through college, the chances of experiencing

stressful situations increases.

That may be due to increased academic and other pressures, she said.

In terms of race, compared with white students, fewer Asian students reported mental health problems.

In addition, black students were less likely than white students to report mental health problems or suicidal thoughts or attempts, she added.

music Love Music? You’re in the Right Place SUNY Oswego has variety of programs for those who sing, play instruments — or those who want to learn

hether you sing, play an instrument, want to get a degree in music or want to perform master works, SUNY Oswego is the place to be.

Department of Music Chairman Robert Auler said there are lots of ways for students to get involved in the music ensembles.

“We are hugely student-centered and a very

warm group of professors who really take a lot of personal investment in their students,” Auler said. “It’s a real family atmosphere here and I feel we really just have the right size.”

For singers, they can join the festival chorus, college choir for women, college choir for men, or StateSingers, all led by Mihoko Tsutsumi, the director of choral

activities.

For people who play wind instruments, they have the opportunity to join Wind Ensemble, the Oswego State Jazz Ensemble, a woodwind quintet, a flute ensemble and a clarinet quintet.

For non-wind instrument musicians, there is also a guitar ensemble, a percussion ensemble, and a college orchestra. There are 11 fulltime faculty members and multiple part-time instructors who assist students.

While there aren’t thousands of students attending and participating in the programs, Auler said there are enough students to create a buzz and excitement in the buildings.

“It’s one of the warmest places you can study,” Auler said. “I sense that our students are really happy and feel like they belong here.”

Students can pursue a major in music, a minor in music, a certificate of specialized study in piano, an arts management minor or an audio design and production minor.

music majors are also welcome to join the program.

Auler said there is a huge group of non-music majors.

“We love music majors and we love music minors and we also love chemistry majors,” Auler said. “[The groups] are open to all students on campus.”

For students who have never learned an instrument, there are beginner classes in piano to take. Some studios have classes for beginners, such as beginner guitar.

Every April, the jazz program plays a concert on Long Island, and visits high schools in the area to inspire students.

“We are actively inviting students to come down and have a lesson and see how it goes,” Auler said. “We are active as performers, we perform throughout New York state. That’s a nice way to actually meet people that might have been at the concerts and are interested in learning more about Oswego.”

“One of the good things about Oswego is that we’re not classical music snobs,” Auler said. “We believe all music is valuable and kids may come from a lot of different entry points. If you want to learn classical piano this is a great place for you, or jazz piano, or electronic production.”

Auler said if students are interested, they should not have any fear about reaching out to a professor to get involved.
