ou may feel like your plate is already full with classes, projects, papers, work and a social life — when you can find the time — but you should also consider volunteering, whether during the semester or for the summer.

Here are five reasons why:

es, volunteering helps you better understand how the world works, why problems aren’t so easily solved and what might improve issues.

Employers want applicants with both book learning and soft skills.

“Employers consistently identify the following skills as most desirable: ability to work in a team, problem-solving skills, communication skills (written and verbal), strong work ethic and leadership,” said Christy Huynh, SUNY Oswego’s associate director of career services.

She added that volunteering represents one way to do that.

You network “Volunteering allows

students to connect with professionals and organizations in a field of interest and may lead to a long-term position or a future professional reference,” Huynh said.

3. You test the waters

Huynh added that if students volunteer in the same organization, industry or role in which they’d like to work, they can “see if it is an industry or position that they

can envision working in.”

You demonstrate your initiative

“It’s always good to volunteer because it shows you want to go above and beyond,” said Catherine Farrell, coordinator of community services at SUNY Oswego.

“Oftentimes, you get a job description, but in volunteering, there’s the expectation that you’ll be flexible, work later, and work to fix problems. As a previous hiring manager, I think that says a lot about a person.”

Of course, sticking with a volunteer position long term, not just a day or two, looks better on your resume.

“It shows a degree of selflessness,” said Dan Sanderson, director of strategic planning at CPS Recruitment in Liverpool. “If it’s a first job out of college, anything to show an individual is well rounded is a positive.”

You grow emotionally

Volunteering can place you in circumstances and with people you could never imagine. You will better understand people and develop more sympathy from observing their struggles firsthand.

How to So how do you volunteer?

Catherine Farrell, coordinator of community services at SUNY Osweg, recommends asking at the school’s service learning or volunteer services department. Any nonprofit religious or civic organization will likely welcome your help; just ask.

Don’t worry if you cannot find a volunteer opportunity that aligns perfectly with your future career.

“It’s nice if it’s directly related, but volunteering always looks good on a student’s resume,” said Karen Knapik-Scalzo, associate economist with the New York Department of Labor Central New York field office. “Communication skills, taking imitative, being able to work well with others: that’s what volunteering helps develop those skills.

“It shows they’re involved in their community and going above and beyond. A lot of colleges push this and want students to volunteer, so it’s something they value to help students be well rounded.”

Battling the plague of over-engagement

ollege — it’s a time for so, so many things. It feels like there are not enough hours in the day for everything.

Classes, studying, commuting, jobs, clubs, internships, athletics, time with friends, networking, volunteering, exercising, going out and group projects.

After a while, college feels like a cyclone whose only reprieve is the five hours of sleep you can sneak in at night.

In an age where we are constantly connected via social networking, email, texting and obligations, it seems to-do lists are infinite while energy is ever so finite.

With so much to do in anage when you are supposed to be all things to all people and organizations, when is involvement more than enough? When does involvement and engagement become insanity?

Employers want a lot on recent college graduates’ resumes. They want great grades. They want work experience. They want leadership experience derived from memberships in clubs and organizations. They want internships. They want volunteer work. They want people who have passions and hobbies. They want to know prospective employees will give the proverbial 110 percent when they come to work. They want everything and then some — or so students are led to believe.

In turn, many college students give too much of themselves. They have late nights and try to get by on little sleep. They say yes to everything. They search out contributing roles in the classroom, on the court and field, and in the workforce.

They try to be everything at once and often become exhausted and overspent. And, then, they find themselves failing at their commitments

are going to dedicate your valuable time to something, try your best to make it pay off down the road.

I know this, because I have been there.

I tried to do it all in high school. I tried to do it all in college. I am still trying to do it all with two young kids, a full-time job, a freelance gig and a husband who works a lot.

Over-engagement is like a disease. It works its way into your system in elementary school, takes root in high school and sets down lifelong roots in college.

When you reach the end of another seemingly never-ending day, ask yourself if the monster of over-engagement is overtaking your life.

If it is, you may feel like there is no way to break the cycle. Don’t give up, you can do it.

There is no better time like the present to start laying down new habits. There is still time to redirect and put yourself on the path to sanity and moderation.

The balance of the rest of your life may very well depend on it.

Here are some of my personal tips to help regain control of your time and

energy. Let them be a way of leashing the engagement monster.

1 Just say no

Perhaps this popular anti-drug slogan should follow you through life and be applied to a great many things.

We are often taught that we should say no to inherently bad things. However, we aren’t taught to be assertive

Take a role, but not a starring role in everything

Most of us want to be contributors. Many of us want to be leaders. But don’t bite off more than you can chew. Take a look at everything in your schedule and decide if you can reasonably commit to a task. If you can’t, bring yourself to say no, see if you can play a smaller role in the commitment at hand. Sometimes, it’s all right to give a little.

You don’t always have to give everything.

Choose engagements that truly build your resume

Not all commitments are created equal. Some are better resume fodder than others. Be discerning and honest with yourself. If you

Make sure you find commitments that feed your goals and give you a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. This will make them seem less like commitments and more like activities.

Be honest with yourself and then be honest with others

The first step in being honest with others is being honest with yourself. Most of us want to meet other people’s expectations. When we say we will do something, we want to get that thing done. If you think you can’t get it done, be honest with continued on page 19

Dublin, Here I Come Junior to spend spring break traveling abroad

W

hen I came to SUNY Oswego as a freshman in 2015, studying abroad wasn’t on my mind.

When I started working in the international education department that same year, I still didn’t think about it, but I was learning a lot about what places were offered for travel and what the process would be to get there.

Friends, family, and coworkers eventually started to ask me if I was planning on going anywhere. I worked in that department, so shouldn’t I participate in the traveling?

The answer from me was still no. Of course, I would love to but I had a lot of worries. These involved but were

not limited to the cost of the trip, what class I would take while traveling, and flying on a plane.

I’ve only flown once before, but it was in the United States and I don’t remember it because I was too young.

Junior year came around and by then I had seen a lot of people experience traveling to other parts of the world. Finally, I couldn’t get the idea out of my head, and I decided that I wanted to be one of those people.

The fact that I never thought I’d be able to study abroad made the final decision that much more exciting. I’m not sure I would’ve come to this conclusion if I hadn’t worked in the de-

partment, so I’m extremely thankful for that opportunity.

Now came the fun part.

Where should I go? I wanted to take a half semester class so I could travel during spring break. I didn’t think I was quite ready for a full semester abroad.

I decided on Dublin, Ireland. It has always been at the top of my list of places I want to explore one day.

I’ve seen numerous pictures of the beautiful scenery in Ireland, such as the Cliffs of Moher. I’m also part Irish so I think I’d be interested to learn a little more about the history of the area. I’ve also seen how amazing the St. Patrick’s Day Parade looks there. How often do you get to say that you were in Ireland while celebrating St. Patrick’s Day? I’m attending the spring 2018 GLS 100 Dublin course, and I expect that it will be my favorite class. I’m excited to meet new people in the class who I’ll be with while abroad, as well as some close friends that I can’t wait to share the experience with.

There’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll all create memories that will last a very long time.

First Impressions New faculty member adjusts to new way of life

ave you ever wondered what it’s like for a new professor to experience SUNY Oswego for the first time?

Well, here you go!

This is one professor’s point of view on teaching in a new place and some experiences she’s had along the way.

Meet Latoya Lee. She’s from downstate New York.

Lee was born and grew up in Queens and eventually lived and worked on Long Island.

She completed her undergraduate degree at St. John’s University and finished graduate work at Binghamton University.

Before starting and while finishing her degree, she worked at Adelphi, a private university, for about seven years before coming to SUNY Oswego.

She teaches sociology. In the fall semester of 2017, she taught three sociology classes which included introductory sociology, social movements, and race/ethnicity/class/ gender. This spring semester, she is teaching introductory sociology, criminology and qualitative methodology.

Lee is bringing back the Sociology Club. There’s a mixture of freshmen and veteran students as officers in this group. The importance of the club is that students who are sociology majors or minors can meet and reflect with others on what’s happening currently. There aren’t a lot of spaces where students can talk about the world using a sociological analysis.

For freshmen and sophomores, this club provides mentoring from older students. Juniors and seniors can benefit from this group because of the activities involved, such as attending conferences and working on résumés. This club provides real-life experiences to prepare for graduation.

‘What’s happening?’

Something Lee likes to ask her class is, “What’s happening in the world?”

She wants students to discuss and think through what’s happening each day,

apply a sociological lens, and focus on political and controversial topics. This is something that is widely talked

about in the Sociology Club.

If you’re a person who is interested in what’s happening locally and globally and wants to shape how you can impact the world, this may be the club for you. Everyone is welcome.

“I really love it here,” said Lee, noting she enjoys the diversity of the student body and thinks that the faculty and staff “are great.

“The amount of resources provided for faculty and faculty development are much

appreciated. It seems to be a very nice, welcoming, and loving environment, and I do enjoy that. You don’t get that everywhere you go.”

Is she ready for winter?

“I’m not necessarily worried about it, but I’ve been talking to people about the winters here,” she said.

The only thing she will have to get used to is the parking situation when the snow comes, and she has been warned by numerous people.

A

rriving on my university campus as a freshman, I carried a secret no one but my junior-level brother knew: I was only 16.

I had skipped a grade in high school, but I told no one. I already lived in the shadow of my very smart big brother. I didn’t want the whole campus to treat me like a little sister, either.

I learned a lot that year, lessons that apply to freshmen of any age, including:

I attended a university hundreds of miles from home, meaning that I would not see my parents for three and a half months (this was in the days before cheap airfare and free long distance). My brother attended the same school, but as a junior, he shared no classes or social association with me. This meant that not being lonely was all up to me. Holing

up in my room wouldn’t bring me lots of friends, so I worked part-time and joined a play and volunteer groups.

It’s easy to make friends when you try.

2.

Respect is earned.

I observed other freshmen engaging in high school drama and emotional games, which caused others to lose respect for them. Treating others with honesty, kindness and respect caused others to reciprocate, for the most part.

3.

Be tactful, not dishonest.

I didn’t waltz into my dorm room the first day and declare, “Hey, I’m only 16!” but never lied when asked.

By then, most people who knew me realized that a twoyear age difference didn’t matter much. My experience of graduating early helped me mature in various ways.

4.

Maturity is relative.

I still had a lot of growing up to do, but so did the 18-year-old freshmen. Maturity is a continuum. People mature at different rates in different ways.

5.

Don’t let others put you down.

Regardless of the reason, no one has the ability to make you feel less about yourself.

Through the school’s food service, my loving mom sent me a birthday cake that stated in frosting, “Happy 17th birthday!” The campus food workers left student cakes on a table in the dining common for anyone and everyone to read. Naturally, I received quite a bit of ribbing once my big secret was out; however, I didn’t let any mean spirited teasing get to me. After all, I had worked hard to graduate early. What had they done that was so special?

• “I like to say that all areas look good to our graduates, which probably sounds obnoxious. We’ve seen the job market on fire and at a standstill.

But we don’t let the job market slow us down, good or bad.

You have to sprinkle reality in, but we don’t put a lot of stock in how the job market is. If you find something you love to do, you’ll find a way to do it.

• “It’s interesting. There are some growth areas.

Healthcare is still up there. It wasn’t quite as hot in 2017 as people thought it would be in 2016, but it’s still near the top of the list.

• “Education is up there as well. Retirement-age teachers moving on influence this. Over the past two to three years, we’ve seen huge growth for schools hiring, a 200 percent increase over three years ago. It will take a while for the educational programs at colleges to keep up with demand. It was a tough job market around here in education for a few years, so people stopped entering the teaching field. Now the job market is roaring back and we have a deficit of teachers to fill those slots. I have a flyer from a school district in Virginia. They said to come on down, even to practice interviewing.

• “Energy and environmental systems is near the top of list. If you are interested in trades work, like HVAC, masonry, there are many, many jobs out there that pay well.

• “Banking and finance shows greater than expected growth from the year before.

A scholarship is born The scholarship was the result of a bequest of $7.5 million to SUNY Oswego from Nunzio “Nick” C. and Lorraine E. Marano, for whom the campus center facility is named. The Maranos, both now deceased, lived in the Oswego County town of Scriba. Part of Lorraine Marano’s estate plan stipulated a portion of her estate be used to establish a scholarship program for first-generation college students. Thus, a scholarship was born.

Marano Scholarship recipients gathered in October for a breakfast in their honor. The scholarship awards qualifying first-generation college students $5,000 toward college expenses. Sixty two students are benefiting from the program.

irst-generation college students face obstacles that many other college students don’t. Navigating applications and financial aid, registering for courses and finding a way to finance an education can be especially challenging for students whose parents and adult acquaintances aren’t familiar

with navigating a college education. Having a guiding voice throughout the college admissions and enrollment processes is a luxury many first-generation college students don’t have.

As of the fall 2017 semester, the financial aspect of all that navigating got a little easier for first-generation

college students at SUNY Oswego. All first-generation college students who meet financial-need requirements now qualify for the Marano Scholarship. The scholarship awards students $5,000 toward college expenses. There were 62 recipients of the scholarship in the inaugural class.

Meet a Marano Scholar: Zakary Haines

Z

Haines said his parents didn’t have the experience of dealing with college. When he started his application process, he relied on SUNY Oswego officials, his parents and other adults in his life.

However, the costs associated with college were always hovering in the background.

He worried about things like covering the costs of books and other supplies. So, receiving the Marano Scholarship had a big impact on his financial security.

According to Mary Canale, vice president for development and alumni relations at SUNY Oswego, a first-generation college student is one whose parents did not complete post-high school education. The information can be found on a student’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The college uses this information to identify potential recipients.

$5K Scholarship According to Canale, recipients of the scholarship receive $5,000 for up to four years for undergraduate coursework, as long as they maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0. After the first year (fall 2017), which included students from all class years, students will be reviewed for scholarship eligibility when they are selected for admission. The college notifies the students if they are recipients of the scholarship. Students do not need to apply for it directly.

“It came out of the blue,” he says of the scholarship. “I was baffled for the first half hour. It felt a little surreal.”

“They really pushed for me to go to college because they didn’t have the opportunity to go,” said Haines, who went to high school in Baldwinsville and transferred from Cayuga Community College to SUNY Oswego.

What is a firstgeneration college student?

“It eases the financial burden so I can feel a little bit more secure when making financial decisions,” he said.

“The scholarship took some weight off of my shoulders.”

Like many Marano scholars, Haines wasn’t expecting the scholarship. He received an email from the college and things took off from there.

Now that Haines has a few years of college under his belt, he feels more comfortable with the process.

This scholarship is funded by an endowment, according to Canale. This means the returns on the investment pay for the scholarship. The principal investment amount does not change. Hence, the scholarship is funded in perpetuity or perpetually.

Some of the Maranos’ close friends attended and spoke about their deceased friends. 2017 had a very large number of scholars because students from all class years were considered, regardless of their college admission date.

The importance of this scholarship Even after scholarships and student aid, many students find themselves having to take student loans or additional jobs to cover the remaining costs of college.

Currently, the cost of a year (spring and fall semesters) of full-time undergraduate classes is around $21,000.

This scholarship offsets some of the costs that are often obstacles or barriers to first-generation college students accessing higher education.

“These students often face unique challenges, and we hope these scholarships will ease their financial burden so they can focus more of their energy on school work and campus activities,” said Canale.

“I really appreciate what they [the Maranos] have done. I find it really cool. I would love, one day, to give back to the scholarship and donate to the college.”

That donation will be for another day and another path, but thanks to the generosity of the Maranos, Haines’ journey is a lot easier.

“I’m trying to make my own way through college and make my own path,” he said. “This scholarship helps pave that path.”

Keys to Great Relationships Employ strategies to ensure a solid relationship while at school

Respect each other’s space Being in a relationship doesn’t mean that you have to be with your partner all the time. In fact, sometimes space apart can be a great solution to many problems.

This isn’t to say that quality alone time with your partner isn’t also important, but make sure to create time for yourself and hang out with your friends. Having a group or a friend to go to when you want to get away is ideal.

If you want to go somewhere or do something without your partner, just tell them. They should be able to respect that, as long as you make time for them when you can. Saying, “Have fun, be safe, text me if you need anything,” goes a long way.

Talk it out If you’re in a relationship, you have to realize that there will always be ups and downs. Have you had an argument with your partner yet? If the answer is no, don’t worry because you will. At one point or another, you

will yell and so will they and you might think that everything is coming to a horrible end.

But the perfect couple doesn’t exist. That’s right, even young celebrities like Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins have their flaws.

Communication is key (you didn’t have to take COM 100 to know this). If you have something to say, then say it. If something bothers you, tell them. If you keep everything locked up in your head, nothing will change.

I’ll save you some time by saying your partner is probably not picking up on your nonverbal gestures, facial expressions or eye rolls.

Speak about what’s on your mind, talk about it together, listen and compromise to make things work.

Appreciate them There are so many little things you can do to show your partner that you care.

Send them a quick text, buy them a pack of gum or their favorite candy bar, or write them a little note or card.

Sometimes just telling them you love them at random times can mean the world.

The SUNY Oswego college community has many options when it comes to breakfast venues in the city of Oswego.

There is the iconic Wade’s Diner on the city’s east side and legendary Jocko’s Famous Ritz Diner on the west side, but the city also offers an array of eateries with their own special niches.

There is down-home family cooking at Maria’s Family Restaurant, a healthy approach at The Cutting Board, and a café atmosphere at Port City Café & Bakery and Oswego Tea Company Café.

Without a doubt, these eateries cater to virtually every taste of college students and their families, faculty and administrators.

Wade’s Diner

W

hat Rudy’s Lakeside Drive-In is to fish dinners and Texas hots, Wade’s Diner is to breakfast.

The iconic restaurant has served customers in Oswego for more than 80 years. The original owner, Neal Wade, started the business in a Pullman car, or a railroad sleeping car. Anthony Zappala and Joseph Clark have owned and operated the diner since 1983.

Wade’s is located at 176 E. Ninth St., Oswego, at the intersection of East Ninth and Bridge streets.

For the last several years, Wade’s Diner has been enjoying a steady flow of college students.

However, in 2017, that traffic slowed.

“I don’t know why it seems they don’t know that we are here,” said Tracy Fox, manager and head waitress at Wade’s. She and her husband Teddy Straight, the head cook, met at Wade’s Diner.

She noted perhaps many past graduates did not spread the word down to the younger students.

“The don’t have to be done by 1. They just have to be in the door or in line by closing time and they will get fed,” she said.

Fox advised patrons to car pool because of the lack of

parking. She also noted that only cash is accepted.

Fox said Wade’s is famous for its omelets as well as its homemade raisin bread and French toast.

All omelets come with home fries and toast. In 2017, Wade’s started serving a steak omelet, which is especially good with mushrooms and onions.

“We make all our own bread here — white, wheat, cinnamon raisin and rye,” said Fox, noting Wade’s has its own bakery downstairs and makes its own bread four times a week.

Patrons can also purchase breads to take out.

Maria’s Family Restaurant

n Italy, breakfast is known as colazione.

Maria Conzone, owner and general manager of Maria’s Family Restaurant, 111 W. Second St., Oswego, brings a taste of Italy to the Port City with her daily food specialties and all-day breakfast.

Conzone will be celebrating her sixth year in business in February. She noted more college students are patronizing her business every year.

“I feel that we are an inbetween restaurant. We’re not expensive, and we are not a diner per se, not that they are bad or anything,” she said.

“We’re in the middle where I can serve you a nice, homecooked meal.”

Of course, Conzone adheres to the “Italian way,” which is to ensure patrons’ bellies are full and appetites satisfied when they leave.

The restaurant features its signature cinnamon roll pancakes. Conzone also makes her own raisin bread, and other homemade delicacies include scalloped potatoes,

sauces and desserts.

“My parents were in the restaurant business and I was practically born in a restaurant. It’s in my blood,” she noted.

Conzone said she gets her gratification from seeing people enjoy her food as well as patrons who socialize from table to table.

“As far as the college kids, if ever they are downtown and anything happens, we have a safe place and they can come here. We’ll take care of them,” she said.

In terms of her senior and local customers, “they are my friends and family here at Maria’s,” she said.

or those looking for an alternative when it comes to breakfast fare, The Cutting Board, 35 W. Bridge St., Oswego, is quite a feasible option.

The business features a deli, sandwich shop and restaurant.

Owner Chelsea Wahrendorf has done an admirable job in transforming the business into an upbeat sandwich, salad and soup shop that features unique tastes and a great presentation within a hip atmosphere.

The business opened on April 19, 2012.

The Cutting Board itself was inspired by Wahrendorf’s desire to bring healthier and fresher options to Oswego’s breakfast and lunch crowd.

“I feel a lot of young people these days are trying to move toward a more health conscious way of eating,” Wahrendorf said.

She noted there is also a large number of vegetarians and vegans among the college population, and many patronize her business because

of its healthy offerings.

Wahrendorf noted the business offers an eclectic array of foods to choose from.

Popular among the college crowd are breakfast burritos, as well as smashed avocado toast with hard-boiled eggs and a breakfast bowl of hummus, poached eggs, avocado and mushrooms.

Wahrendorf said her business is not a diner.

“If you’re looking for that diner atmosphere, there are a lot of great options in Oswego. But if you’re looking for something different, there really isn’t [any of those type of venues]. I feel that sets me apart. I’m not a diner but more focused on a composed dish as opposed to typical diner fare,” she noted.

The diner, located at 359 W. First St., has been an Oswego dining staple for more than 35 years.

Phil Reitz, son of founder Jocko Reitz, said college students are looking for a hardy, homemade, tasty and filling meal in a social atmosphere.

“Dining is a formal affair, except in a diner. A diner is a place for socialization and connecting with community,” he said. “I wish we were closer to the college so they could visit us more often throughout the week. College students really embrace the camaraderie associated with diner dining.”

The diner features plenty of parking lot parking and serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and coffee.

Leading selections for college students include breakfast burritos, breakfast boats and bowls, frittatas, Denver omelets, The Ritz breakfast sandwich and “fiery” home fries.

Reitz said the diner has served many different items that have circulated throughout the seasonally varied menu that they have popularized to the point of permanently becoming fixtures on the menu.

usyness, access to convenience foods and lack of healthful options all add up to a dietary disaster for many college students.

But with a little planning, you can eat healthfully while in college, according to local experts, who share some tips with College Life.

Tips from Kathy Dischner, nutrition and community food security issue leader and registered dietitian for Cornell Cooperative Extension Onondaga County: • “Don’t let yourself get over-hungry, thinking ‘I’ll eat hours from now’ because you’ll make poor food choices.

• “Stoke the fire all day with smaller, mini meals of 300-400 calories instead of

starving and overloading at one meal.

• “Buy food that is fast and convenient and still healthful, like low-sugar, Greek yogurt, cheese with wholegrain crackers, fruit, trail mix and hummus. Meals and snacks with complex carbohydrates, high protein and good fats provide nutrients, give you energy and help you feel full longer, like eggs scrambled with diced vegetables and a small amount of cheese wrapped in a wholegrain tortilla.

• “If you’re facing a vending machine and starving, pretzels are better than a high sugar candy bar. Peanut M&Ms at least has smaller amounts of sugar comparatively.

• “Have water be your go-to beverage, even when you’re out partying. Drink water between other drinks.

Imprudent beverage choices is one of the biggest reasons why students gain weight.

They pack mindless calories in part because when we

drink calories, we don’t compensate by eating less whole food.”

Tips from Laurel Sterling natural health educator and a registered dietitian practicing in Canastota” • “Scout out the environment to check out all options and develop a plan. More healthful and lower to moderate calorie options include foods that are baked, broiled, grilled, steamed or roasted.

Avoid foods swimming in butter or sauces. Salad bars can offer great choices. Go easy on bacon bits, cheese, croutons and other high calorie add-ons. Squeeze lemon and pepper over salads first for added flavor, then drizzle dressing or olive oil. Grab fruit for dessert or take along

They need to plan to eat. There are lots of choices like wraps, salads, rice bowls and things that students can select items to go in it. Try to

get a good source of lean protein like chicken, bean burrito or tuna.

Add in veggies and think about side items. Go for fruit, trail mix, cut-up veggies and hummus, not just a bag of chips.

• “Try nutrition bars that have whole foods like Kind Bars versus chewy granola bars that are mostly sugar.

You can make your own trail mix with dried fruit and nuts. They won’t go bad.

• “If you’re caffeinating to stay up late, you have a hard time falling asleep and wake up groggy. Then, you don’t have time to eat, so watch the caffeinated drinks.

Green tea has some caffeine and has anti-oxidants.

Energy drinks are the worst.

They’re full of sugar.”

Catching up with Jacob Alexander

S

ince fall semester 2016, we’ve followed Jacob Alexander, now a sophomore at SUNY Oswego.

The first year represents a time of adjustment for most students, as college is more academically rigorous than high school, students spend more time away from their families, and a bevy of new friends enter their lives.

Alexander lives off campus at his home in Sterling, along with parents, Patti and Ron, and younger sisters Meadow and Lilly (his older sister, Kaitlin, attends college, too). Commuting 20 minutes hasn’t stopped him from enjoying a robust academic and social life at SUNY Oswego.

“It’s busy,” Alexander said. “Classes were pretty good. I’ve enjoyed them.

A few were difficult but it wasn’t too bad. I had mostly tech classes so I like that.”

Alexander plants to teach technology education, so his basic electronics and advanced metals classes were especially pleasurable and enlightening.

Alexander said that professors Richard Bush, teaching advanced metals and Edward Zak, teaching technology education deeply impressed him.

“They are really passionate about what they teach and create a really good environment in the classroom,” Alexander said.

“They’re very experienced in the field. They make the class enjoyable.”

Try these tips to save minutes in your day.

• Streamline your morning routine. Use combination products, such as tinted moisturizer if you wear makeup, or shampoo and conditioner. Wear your hair in a simple, wash-andgo style.

• Keep your wardrobe basic. If most of your clothing coordinates, it’s easier to pick something to wear.

• Keep your dorm room

better organized. Listen to your inner Mom voice: If you always put things back, you’ll know where to find them--and not waste time hunting for things every day.

• Work on projects during class. Of course, pay attention to the lecture, but when the professor says something you should include in the project for that class, make a note of it. That will make it so much easier to pull together projects later.

“It was very fun but very busy,” Alexander said. “For both, I run the meetings. I get all the officers together. For OTEA, we addressed redesigning our logo. I helped organize our trip to Virginia Beach for TEECA, a technology competition and job fair.”

Technology and Engineering Education Collegiate Association, held Nov. 8-11, hosted students from throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

Alexander’s club placed in several events.

He has found that serving as president for the clubs has improved his organization and leadership skills. He also feels more confident in his public speaking skills.

In his spare time, Alexander works at the Cooper Dining Hall as a server. He gets to know a few more faces on campus, as well as make some money.

For the spring semester, Alexander hopes to continue improving his organization

and time management skills to keep up with his classes, clubs and work.

Staying on campus all day helps him minimize driving time. A few times when weather was iffy, he has stayed overnight in a friend’s dorm room.

Alexander advises students to make a schedule to keep track of their homework, projects and tests.

“Definitely don’t overload yourself,” he said.

“Being president of two clubs got a little stressed at times, but the other officers helped me through it. I’m just a sophomore. I don’t think I was totally prepared to be president of both at the same time but it’s working out.”

He also advises students to take a break and make time for themselves occasionally to de-stress. In his

Instead of posting on social media, study during those minutes while you wait for class to start.

• Eat on campus. Whether it’s in the dining common or a bag lunch you bring, you’ll likely save time instead of driving off campus for lunch. You’ll likely also save money as well.

• Work on campus.

You’ll save time over commuting off campus for a job.

• Listen to your notes.

With the professor’s permission, record classes so you can listen to the lecture while you work out.

• Join the same groups as your friends. You can socialize while you volunteer, practice for the performance or develop your project.

• Don’t over extend yourself. Joining too many clubs, groups and extracurricular activities will spread yourself too thin. Limit yourself to the one or two that mean the most to you. Ask about the time requirements each week. The play may sound fun, but it likely will require many long nights of practice.

• Plan your work. At the

beginning of the semester, review each class calendar and transfer them on your calendar, both when each project is due and when you should start working on them.

Periodic reminders can also help you stay on track. Each day, list items you need to do that day. Only allow yourself downtime once you complete those responsibilities.

• Unplug. When you’re studying or completing class projects, get off all devices, unless you’re using them directly to finish your work.

Posting pictures of you studying does not help you learn the material.

• Stay healthy. Sick time is down time, so try to eat right, manage stress, sleep enough, vaccinate for flu and avoid sick people.

iranda Traudt started her journey as the director of ARTSwego in August 2017. After a semester with the program, she sat down with College Life to share her vision for arts at SUNY Oswego and the greater Oswego community.

What is ARTSwego?

ARTSwego is a presenting arts series whose goal is to support the presentation of arts and cultural programs for the campus and community by collaborating with students, faculty and the administration.

ARTSwego serves as a catalyst for high-quality arts programs that enhance the cultural environment of the college and augment academic offerings. It seeks to introduce students to art forms and performances different from those offered by the mass market.

ARTSwego also serves as a bridge between the campus and community. It develops collaborative and interdisciplinary programs that foster patterns of life-long learning and promote cross-cultural understanding.

What a day in your professional life looks like?

I spend quite a bit of time responding to emails and phone calls. This time of year [December], I am receiving many proposals from agents representing artists with potential touring programs.

I conduct a lot of research online about artists to see if any would be a good fit for ARTSwego. I usually have a couple of meetings a day to discuss programing logistics or ideas for collaboration.

In January, I will attend the Association of Performing Arts Professional’s annual conference in New York City. This enormous, fiveday event offers more than a thousand performances from touring artists. There are also hundreds of art agencies available to meet to discuss potential programing. This will be the first time I am attending this conference, and I am very excited for the experience. I am hoping to see some performances that would be a good fit for Oswego.

Meet Miranda Traudt She is now in charge of ARTSwego

By Melissa Stefanec acuse University, I was hired at the Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, a non-profit gallery and multi-arts facility, where I began as administrative coordinator and was later promoted to program director. In this role, I created and oversaw programs, including classes, workshops, exhibitions and events. Next, I was hired as managing director of Point of Contact, a contemporary art gallery at Syracuse University. Similar to my role at ARTSwego, at Point of Contact, I focused on using gallery programs to augment student learning.

I have also taught graduate and undergraduate courses in arts management, museum studies and art history at several local colleges and universities. Therefore, I am interested in training students for similar careers in the arts industry.

Why are you interested in this job?

ARTSwego is an incredible and unique organization. I was interested in the position because it would enable me to focus on what I love to do — use the arts to educate and inspire others.

I am responsible for seeking

out artists from all over the world and bringing them back to Oswego to educate and inspire students and our community. Who wouldn’t want to do that?

Why do you want to be part of the SUNY Oswego community?

The more I get to know Oswego, the more I am discovering a rich and vibrant community that has so much to offer. I truly feel that Oswego is on the brink of renaissance, and there is an exciting momentum. I also think the arts help build a vibrant community, which can attract people to live and work here. I hope ARTSwego can be a part of this movement, by creating opportunities to experience art from all over the world.

Favorite artists: I have never been very good at choosing favorites. My tastes are constantly changing and evolving depending on my mood or what is happening in the world around me.

That’s one of the things I love about art; there is something that will speak to you at any and all moments of your life. Overall, I am

drawn to works that make me stop and think. Whether it’s a song, a play or a work of art, my most meaningful experiences are those that are serious, potent and expose me to a new and different perspective. I also love experiencing art from different cultures and regions that I don’t normally have the opportunity to interact with.

Pets?

I have one cat, Cornelia.

Most unusual/unique item in your office right now: I actually have a painting by a friend/colleague of mine, Chris Baker. The painting is of the Port of Oswego at night. It has a dark, quiet and mysterious quality about it that I was drawn to. I purchased it several years ago, never knowing that I would someday work in Oswego.

What do you hope to accomplish in the short term?

My goals for the short term are to get to know the campus and Oswego community and build relationships with faculty, staff and community partners. In addition, I have been also familiarizing myself with ARTS-

What do you hope to accomplish in the long term?

My long-term focus is to grow the rich legacy ARTSwego has worked hard to establish. I look forward to continuing to bring artists from all over the world, to offer innovative programs and thought-provoking experiences for the campus and Oswego community. Through partnership and collaboration, I hope to strengthen our ties with the campus and community to create experiences that are attractive and available to all.

What are you looking forward to most about working with students?

What I love about working with students is how open they tend to be — open to new ideas and ways of thinking. At this point in their lives, most students are spending time learning about various subjects. I find them to be thoughtful, collaborative and not afraid to push boundaries or question norms. Working with students makes me constantly revaluate my own notions and ideas, and that’s a great thing.

What are some of your favorite aspects of the recently renovated Tyler Hall?

The recent renovations to Tyler Hall have resulted in a beautiful newly upgraded theater, Tyler Art Gallery and lobby area. Now, you can have a whole multi-arts experience in one space. Last month, I attended Oswego Opera’s Mikado in Waterman Theatre and also had the opportunity to view the current exhibition at Tyler Art Gallery during intermission.

That was great.

How do you plan to get more students on campus involved in the arts?

To get students more involved in the arts, I am focused on two areas. One is to develop a sort of student advisory committee who can help inform me on what student’s interests are and also act as ambassadors to spread the word about ARTSwego around campus. I am also working on having more students involved through internships, work experiences and class projects so they can assist with the production of ARTSwego programs and ultimately be more involved in the entire process. The

second way I am working on student involvement is to focus on building programs with faculty and staff on campus. That way, I can look for artists that would easily fit into course curriculum and other campus initiatives.

The more partners and collaborations there are between faculty and staff with ARTSwego programs, the easier it is to reach students and the more powerful the programs will be.

How do you plan to increase student-community interactions?

I think perhaps the most transparent and achievable way to increase student-community interactions is to partner with community organizations and businesses off campus. While Waterman Theatre was under renovation, many ARTSwego programs took place off campus.

This was a great opportunity to experiment with different venues and audiences. I am hoping to take the information we learned from those years and create some intentional programs that take place in the community.

ARTSwego Features “Feathers of Fire” Don’t miss the next performance brought to campus by ARTSwego, “Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic.”

It will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23 at the Waterman Theatre.

“Feathers of Fire” is a visually breathtaking cinematic shadow play for all ages, created by Hamid Rahmanian, a 2014 Guggenheim fellowship-winning filmmaker/visual artist. The play unfolds an action-packed magical tale of star-crossed lovers from the 10th-century Persian epic Shahnameh (‘The Book of Kings’), who triumph at the end against all odds. Rahmanian’s graphics, derived from the visual tradition of the region, will be rendered as puppets, costumes, masks, scenography and digital animation, all of which will come to life in a “live animation” shadow casting technique perfected by shadow master Larry Reed on a cinema-size screen.

The play also features an original score by the acclaimed musical team, Loga Ramin Torkian and Azam Ali. “Feathers of Fire” had its world premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2016.

f you have not selected a minor yet, you should.

Though your major likely reflects what type of employment you want to pursue, your minor can also play an important role in where you end up after graduation.

Rameen Mohammadi, SUNY Oswego’s associate provost for undergraduate and special programs, said that one of Mohammad the reasons to carefully pick a minor is that it can build additional credentials.

“Many of our liberal arts majors require between 30 and 40 credits in their major,” Mohammadi said.

“For most of these students who have other interests and have room in their schedule, it’s an opportunity to follow other interests besides their major.”

Depending upon the course of study, some students can easily add a minor.

For example, those studying computer science must take so much math already that only a few additional courses can mean a math minor.

“We firmly believe that having a minor does add value,” Mohammadi said. “Students who minor in math are distinguishing themselves in having some depth in an area that most other applicants will not have. The students who, for example, major in art but complete a minor in business also distinguish themselves by stepping out beyond their area of interest and expertise, to gain very useful professional skills.”

dents flesh out their resume.

While it doesn’t guarantee landing that dream job, it can represent yet another “plus” for a graduate’s applicant.

“It’s a factor in your favor if it makes you more appealing and marketable,” said Gary Morris, director of career services at SUNY Oswego. “It is a series of incremental steps you take to get you closer to that offer.”

Morris encourages students to think about where they want to be five years down the road. What skills and education will help them get there?

But students should not make the decision solely on Morris how the minor would promote them in the job market.

“I know the job market is important, particularly if you’re geographically bound to an area, but I encourage folks to use the job market as one of many factors about their professional career, but not singularly make that choice,” Morris said. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way, if you’re willing to be flexible and try new things.”

For example, a business minor may not appeal to the thearte major, but it would help in case that career in performing arts doesn’t immediately pan out. The graduate may find work in managing a business related to thearte. While it’s not exactly the target career, it could lead to something closer and in the meantime, it keeps the graduate in the target industry.

debt I’m Paying Off My Student Loan. Finally Find out what I learned the hard way

his spring, I will do something I’ve been dreaming off since I was a much younger woman. I will pay of my student loans.

It’s going to be a special and emotional day.

There will likely be cake and wine, because all celebrations deserve those two things. Although this historic event won’t be accompanied by any tearful speeches, it will involve some internal reflections.

It will have been 13-plus years since the fateful day I took my first student loan, and I know I won’t be able to escape reflecting on how I got to the present.

How did I actually pay off all of that money? More importantly, did I really need to borrow all of it? And, perhaps, most important of all, how I can apply what I’ve learned to financial decisions in the future?

I won’t bore you with all the details of my musings, but I will share how I got through the process and what I wish I had done better.

Every student borrower has a story. Maybe you’re the first person in your family to attend college. Maybe you’re the twentieth. Chances are, you chose a state university because money was a concern for you. You wanted a quality education and a bill that you or your family could handle. So, you became one

of the many people in the United States to acquire student loan debt. According to Forbes.com, citing the Federal Reserve Board, Americans owed $41 trillion in student loan debt as of June 2017.

While you are in the throes of contributing to this debt, there are some things you can do and questions to ask yourself to mitigate your borrowing. Before you borrow another dollar, my advice is to do the following things.

Financial knowledge is power — seek it out My story started like many before me and many that will come after me. I came from a blue-collar family. I was paying my own way.

My family wasn’t taking loans or giving me money. I had to find a way to finance my education. So, I sat down and talked to people at the financial aid office. They were very helpful. I armed myself with all the information I could get my hands on.

I dissected my financial aid package. How long were my aid and scholarships good for? Did the amount change each year? Which of my loans were accruing interest while I was in school and which were not? Which of my loans had fixed interest rates and which had variable rates? How long did I have pay these loans back?

It felt like I asked a thousand questions, but once I got the answers, I knew I could

make better decisions.

Learn the difference between subsidized loans, unsubsidized loans, and private loans There are a lot of important differences. There is a great question-and-answer tutorial on the Federal Student Aid website at: https:// studentaid.ed.gov/sa/ types/loans/.

Here is a summary: • Direct subsidized loans are available to people with financial need. The U.S. Department of Education pays the interest on these loans while you are in school at least half time, during your grace period and during periods of deferment. These loans typically have fixed interest rates.

• Direct unsubsidized loans are available to any student. You are responsible for paying all interest on the loan at all points in time.

While you are in school, you can defer the interest, but the interest will accrue and be added to the amount you borrowed. These loans typically have fixed interest rates.

• Private loans come from private lenders and are not secured by the federal government. They can be secured by an individual according to the terms of the borrowing agreement. These loans typically have variable interest rates.

Chart and evaluate your expenses As boring and painful as is, setting a budget is also extraordinarily liberating.

Knowing your cash flow lets you focus on other more important things. Make a simple spreadsheet with all of your expenses (bonus Excel experience). Do the same thing for all of the line items on your financial aid package and any income you are earning. If you are going to use some of your financial aid to cover living expenses, differentiate between what’s nice to have and what you need.

Be cautious of borrowing more than you need It does feel nice to have a little cushion in your bank account and a little fun money, but be reasonable if this money is coming from loans. Try to borrow as little as you can to get by comfortably. If you can find a way to borrow $500 less a semester and you spend eight semesters in college, you will save $4,963 during the course of a 10-year repayment plan and lower your monthly payment by $41. (This is assuming a fixed interest rate of 4.45 percent, which is the current rate for undergraduate, direct unsubsidized loans.)

Be cautious of borrowing for extracurriculars There are a lot of great opportunities for students.

For example, you can travel or study internationally.

These programs offer valuable experiences, but make sure you evaluate the total cost before you commit. Taking a class where you spend a few weeks in another country may seem like a bargain at only $1,500, but using the scenario above, you are actually paying back $1,861 and adding $15 to your monthly payments. It all starts adding up, so be prudent.

Use a loan calculator There are lots of good

online loan calculators. Find one and use it. Bankrate has an easy-to-use calculator that can be found at: www. bankrate.com/calculators/ college-planning/loan-calculator.aspx. However, if you borrow from a private lender, make sure to examine all the possible scenarios associated with variable-interest-rate loans.

Talk to the financial aid office about, well, everything Colleges employ people who dedicate their working hours to everything student loans. Seek those people out and pick their brains. The student loan process is a hard thing to get your head around, and it can be very intimidating. Make an appointment and take the time to dissect your borrowing with someone from the financial aid office. You won’t regret it.

Celebrate the Excelsior Scholarship New York state recently created a program that is the first of its kind in the nation.

When you are looking at how much to borrow in college, think about what matters down the road. Having extra money for lattes, beers, travel and toys is really nice, but if you are purchasing that sort of stuff on borrowed money, you should re-think your strategy. Borrowing more than you have to will negatively impact your future.

College loan debt can be debilitating down the road, so do everything you can to put yourself in the know and make informed choices. Let college debt play the smallest role possible in your bright future.

In his final semester, Kouthoofd was carrying an impressive overall 3.92 grade-point average, which qualifies him for high honors.

The recent grad’s first job was working for Alex Pantaleev, assistant professor of computer science and game design and development at SUNY Oswego.

Pantaleev and his wife Lynna Cekova own Prista Technologies in Syracuse, which does subcontracting work for the federal government.

Kouthoofd, 21, was hired on a part-time basis while still in college.

Prista Technologies specializes in programming for government radar systems, and Kouthoofd mostly tested equipment to make sure it operated properly.

The 125K Man Fresh off graduation, SUNY Oswego computer programmer plugs into big dollars

A

lexander Kouthoofd may be leaving his heart in Oswego, but he is taking his gigabytes to San Francisco.

Based on his entry-level wage, the 2,799-mile trip will be well worth it.

Kouthoofd recently graduated from SUNY Oswego with a Bachelor of Arts degree in computer science. To say he has quickly parlayed that into something positive is an understatement.

The Oswego native has been hired by Salesforce in San Francisco, a cloud computing company, and will be making $125,000 a year right out of the gate.

To put that into perspective, the typical student at a midrange four-year college earns

$40,500 a year one decade after enrolling, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

To the casual observer, $125K is an impressive amount of cash. But Kouthoofd advised that wage level is “standard” at Salesforce.

Nonetheless, it “wicked took me off guard,” he said.

“It was more like going completely stiff because you don’t want to completely freak out on the person who just told you that,” he said. “It’s a very surprising number when it’s just thrown at you.”

“It feels pretty good” to command that kind of pay, Kouthoofd said.

“You always hear that computer science is high paying and a good occupation to get into, but I still wasn’t expecting that.

He was at Prista Technologies when he met a colleague there who had been hired by Salesforce, and he helped line up Kouthoofd for an interview for a paid internship.

“Once I got into the internship last summer, it all played out from there,” said Kouthoofd, noting he will start his new journey as a software engineer on Feb. 8.

Kouthoofd characterized the interim period leading up to his start date as “nerve wracking” but exciting.

“At Salesforce, I will be working on a program that improves the performance of the main application that the company has,” he said. “It’s all about making things faster. The main application can be pretty slow sometimes, so our job is to make it run faster.”

Kouthoofd said his internship was great.

“I love San Francisco and the city life is exciting. The weather is never cold; it’s not necessarily warm, but it’s always never cold, which is nice,” he said.

San Francisco has 43 hills ranging upward from 200 to 938 feet.

“It’s an interesting system because the city is surrounded by a road that’s nice and flat and you can go around the city and then make your way in and don’t have to go through all those hills,” he said.

“The company is great and has the coolest environment ever. They like to make lots of jokes and have a lot of fun,” he added.

Salesforce is regarded as the world’s No. 1 customer relationship management platform. It features cloud-based applications for sales, service and marketing.

Its revenues in 2017 are an estimated $8.39 billion.

With about 10,000 employees worldwide, it is the largest tech employer in San Francisco.

“It’s largely focused on creating products for other businesses, which is why it’s not a company that most people have heard of,” he said.

It recently constructed Salesforce Tower, a 1,070-foothigh skyscraper that is the tallest and most expensive building in San Francisco.

“Salesforce has this really cool system called the ‘one-onone model’ that has all employees at some point go and do some fun volunteer work,” he said. “It’s required but you can pick what volunteer work you want to do.”

Kouthoofd assisted a volunteer group during his internship when it helped at a soup kitchen and charity soccer game.

The recent grad said he hit many learning curves during the internship.

“You learn how to program from college, but you learn how to do your job on the job,” Kouthoofd said. “Pretty much anything you do at the college preps you to critically think.

Things you learn in college are helpful, but they don’t directly apply to the job.”

Kouthoofd said he has previewed apartments, and has discovered that in San Francisco for a one-bedroom apartment or efficiency studio, the cost is around $3,000 a month.

Some of the apartments he was looking at located next to the commercial district were priced higher.

“Which is ‘ouch’,” he said.

However, once outside the city, rentals drop to around $2,000. “That’s about as low as it gets,” he said.

A co-worker of his resides in Pleasanton, a suburb in the San Francisco Bay area. There, he is paying $2,000 in rent.

Kouthoofd said he intended to either stay at a hostel or with his colleague in Pleasanton for a week or so in mid-January while attempting to find his own space.

Dispelling stereotype Kouthoofd said the typical stereotype of a “computer geek” bears some truth.

“Geeks” have commonly been described as fairly quiet, digitally savvy yet socially awkward types.

“There are also some misconceptions to it. You have people who are great artists who do computer science,” he said.

“I couldn’t draw to save my life, but there are plenty of other ways to express creativity.”

Kouthoofd enjoys the discipline of parkour, which uses movement that developed from military obstacle course training. Participants navigate from one point to another in a complex environment, without assistive equipment and in the fastest and most efficient way possible.

It includes running, climbing, swinging, vaulting and other movements deemed suitable for the situation. It’s not

uncommon to see Kouthoofd doing back flips en route to his destination.

“It’s all about being creative and trying to figure out what is the best way to get from one place to another with maybe some flair added in,” he said.

While the nightlife may seem enticing to a person in his early 20s, Kouthoofd tends to abstain from such activity.

“I had three other people that I lived with during my internship, and two of them were definitely partiers,” he said.

“They were out every night.

They never caused us problems, but you could tell they really liked the night life.”

However, that may have been an anomaly.

“As you might imagine, computer science people don’t often go out,” he said.

“I think the reason we don’t is we’re too busy,” he said.

“Computer science takes up a lot of time. When you are working on an assignment, it’s a huge time sink.”

Exploring his passion Besides excelling in the classroom, Kouthoofd served as vice president and public relations officer for the college’s Computer Science Association.

“Computer programming has always been one of my favorite things to do since high school,” he said.

He said he loves the challenge.

“I just think it is super fun.

It is hard, but every time you get something done, it is really satisfying because you can actually see it work and function,” he said.

He also was affiliated with Team Mini, a club at SUNY Oswego that focuses on learning and working with robotics.

“They have this really cool robot that runs on the ice during the intermissions of hockey games on campus,” he said. “We would actually [remotely] drive the robot out onto the ice, where it would shoot T-shirts out into the crowd.”

Kouthoofd also participated with the SUNY Oswego Outdoor Club, which delves into activities such as hiking and skiing.

One of his favorite outdoor activities is rock climbing, and he has frequented The Ledge at Pacific Health Club in Liverpool that features indoor climbing for training purposes.

“You wouldn’t believe the number of people in San Francisco who go rock climbing,” Kouthoofd said.

He said at 5 p.m. weekdays, the four rock climbing gyms in the city are packed.

“I think it’s a lot of computer science people who don’t get a lot of exercise from sitting in a chair all day,” said Kouthoofd, noting he encountered fellow interns from his company there.’

Listen to your body

If you are having a hard time being honest with yourself, listen to your body.

It knows what’s right for you. If you are having to drag yourself to most of your engagements, feel burned out all the time, find yourself getting sick a lot, or find your outlook consistently being negative, your body may be trying to tell you something about the speed of your life.

It’s OK to slow down. Slowing down is a good thing.

When it comes to the important things, we often put ourselves last. We may find it easy to treat ourselves to a special beverage or favorite service, but treating ourselves to downtime or idle fun can be a lot harder. The reality is, there is will always be more to do. None of us will ever be caught up. Being caught up on life tasks is an illusion. We all need to take time for ourselves. Time to truly relax. Time to unwind with a favorite hobby. Time to read. Time to be with a friend. Time to exercise or meditate. Time to talk with a loved one.

If your schedule is so full you have no time for self-care, engagements aren’t enhancing your life, they are ruling it.

Make sure you get your highest marks in self-care.

If you can accomplish that, all the other tasks on this list will become a whole lot easier. You got this.
