ollege enrollment declined by close to half a million (463,000) between 2012 and 2013, marking the second year in a row that a drop of this magnitude has occurred. The cumulative two-year drop of 930,000 was larger than any college enrollment drop before the recent recession, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics from the Current Population Survey released in September. The Census Bureau began collecting data on college enrollment in this survey in 1966.

Census Bureau has published “School Enrollment in the United States: 2013,” detailing national-level statistics on the characteristics of students, from nursery school to graduate school.

The data were collected in the October School Enrollment Supplement to the 2013 Current Population Survey.

“The drop-off in total

college enrollment the last two years follows a period of expansion: between 2006 and 2011, college enrollment grew by 3.2 million,” said Kurt Bauman, chief of the Census Bureau’s Education and Social Stratification Branch. “This level of growth exceeded the total enrollment increase of the previous 10 years combined (2.0 million from 1996 to 2006).”

According to the new statistics, the drop in enrollment was equally divided between older and younger students. Enrollment of students 21 and younger fell by 261,000; the enrollment of students older than 25 fell by 247,000, not statistically different from the change in enrollment of students 21 and younger. Overall, 40 percent of those 18 to 24 were enrolled in college in fall 2013, after having reached 42 percent in 2011.

A large part of the decline took place in two-year colleges (known often as community or junior colleges). Such schools experienced a 10 percent decline in enrollment from 2012 to 2013, while enrollment at fouryear colleges grew slightly (1 percent).

Hispanic college enrollment stopped its growth in 2013 after seeming to defy the overall downward trend in 2012. A larger share of Hispanic college students attend two-year schools than Asians, blacks or non-Hispanic whites, and these schools saw a sharper decline than four-year schools.

n years gone by, many SUNY Oswego students spent the last Friday of classes doing the Bridge Street Run. The annual ritual started in the 1960s and revolved around the idea of a person having one drink at every establishment they visited. Throughout the years, this pub-crawl grew into a display of public intoxication that left broken laws and property damage in its wake.

In 2014, after s series of violent incidents, the Oswego City Common Council banned the event for 2015.

SUNY Oswego has never endorsed, promoted or supported the Bridge Street Run. In fact, the college discouraged the event. Leaders of the Student Association are now taking the initiative to plan an alternative event that will offer new entertainment options for students as a way to wrap up the academic year.

The running name for the event is Ozfest and, according to Student Association President Tucker Sholtes, there will be an on-campus festival that students won’t want to miss. It’s scheduled for May 8.

“This is a great opportunity for Oswego to own its own end-of-year celebration,” said Sholtes.

A lot about Ozfest is tentative and still in the planning stages, but Sholtes gave an early glimpse into what students can expect from the festival, which will run from approximately 2 p.m. until midnight.

It will be a series of on-campus events that will start with the long-standing senior picnic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a free, campus-wide barbecue.

If Students Association plans come to fruition, the popular CaseA-Palooza event will be part of day filled with parties, shows, a concert with a big name artist and other fun activities. will sponsor Case-A-Palooza.

This portion of the event will feature carnival games and free food from noon until 5 p.m. Case-A-Palooza is an annual, outdoor event that is already popular on campus.

In past years, this tail-gatingstyle event featured games, music, food and even bull riding. That event will potentially be followed by a free dinner.

The Student Association is also looking into the idea of having a lot of different local acts perform on campus during the day. As this event is still in the planning stages, Sholtes said there was a possibility of having a main stage with one lineup, or there could be multiple stages placed around the campus. The plan is to have music and possibly even comedy acts perform throughout the day.

Nothing about Ozfest is carved in stone, said Sholtes, who adds that the biggest news about the festival is still in the works. He said,

however, that the Student Association is looking to bring in a big-name music act for Friday evening, possibly in the ice arena.

“We are hoping it will put us on the map as one of the universities that puts on a bigger show,” said Sholtes.

As of now, the plan is to have advance-sale tickets for SUNY Oswego students.

That way, students will get first dibs on going to a big-name show. The tickets would also likely be sold at a discounted price.

Sholtes is hoping May 2015 will be the first time Oswego holds a sold-out or near-capacity concert. The Student Association has bids out to more than one bigname artist, he said.

After the big show, Ozfest will likely culminate in a midnight breakfast, with different staff members from the campus community serving the meal. It would be a chance for students to see their favorite professors and staff members up past their bed times and slinging latenight college cuisine.

The events will all be coordinated by the Student Association, and Sholtes sees a tide of change sweeping over SUNY Oswego’s end-ofyear rituals.

“It’s exciting for the Student Association to have something to stand behind and be so proud of,” said Sholtes. “I think it will be a chance for the Student Association to shine bright.”

UNY Oswego has been named to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine’s list of 100 best values in public colleges for 2015.

The ranking cites four-year schools that combine outstanding academics with affordable cost.

“Choosing the right college is a daunting task for many students and can be stressful for the whole family. Affordability and value are near the top of most students’ lists of what’s important to them,” said Dan Griffin, admissions director at SUNY Oswego. “Naturally we feel our tuition, quality of programs, amazing facilities and experiential learning opportunities make us a great choice. That such a reputable source as Kiplinger’s agrees by naming us a ‘Best Value’ is a gratifying vote of confidence.”

Kiplinger’s assesses quality according to metrics that include the admission rate, the percentage of students who return for sophomore year, the student-faculty ratio and the four-year graduation rate. Cost criteria include sticker prices, financial aid and average debt at graduation.

T

here are a lot of words you could use to describe college, but in my opinion, there is one that describes it better than any other. That word is opportunity.

College is an opportunity to expand the horizons of your life. It’s an opportunity to learn academics. It’s an opportunity to gain life experiences. It’s an opportunity to meet great friends.

For many, it’s an opportunity to start over. One of the most important opportunities in college is the chance to network. Networking may seem like something boring people do in scratchy business suits, but it doesn’t have to be so stuffy.

College is the perfect time to start building the social network that will spring board you into your adult life. Networking may seem like a lot of work. It may seem like the sort of thing that’s available to only a privileged few. It may seem like the sort of thing rich kids or nerds do.

It probably seems like a bore when compared to hanging out with friends or partying. However, networking is available to any student in the campus community and it can be a heck of a lot of fun.

Networking shouldn’t be scary or intimidating. It’s actually very simple. All it takes to get the networking ball rolling is a little personal initiative. You have to get involved. Being involved in extra-curricular activities opens doors. It sets you down roads that are closed to others. It gets your name out there. It’s about filling your inner circle with people who are go-getters.

Look at it this way. If all you do is go to classes, work and hang out, you are creating a network of a few professors and some friends.

If you expand that circle, you are presenting yourself with more opportunities. Join a club or organization that reflects your hobbies, interests and passions. That way, networking won’t be a chore; it will be a good time.

This listserv sends a weekly email that contains one-time volunteer opportunities for students. The Laker Leads database is another way to search for volunteer opportunities. It contains more than 150 volunteer listings and internship possibilities.

It even contains parttime and full-time job listings. You can visit https:// oswego-suny-csm.symplicity. com/students/ to register for a new account and get started on your search.

Getting engaged doesn’t have to monopolize all of your free time. If you don’t have a lot of time due to the demands of class work, an outside job or outside obligations, you can still get involved. Find an organization that you can serve on your terms.

Some organizations feature only one or two big events a year, making it easier to plan when you will be busy with activities. If you aren’t a leader, you can still serve in an organization.

You can set the boundaries on your involvement. A little engagement is a lot better than none.

Hopefully, these avenues can get you started on getting involved. With a new year upon us, it’s a great time to start a new endeavor. Once you start getting engaged, opportunities to network will present themselves.

SUNY Oswego Kicks the Habit Oswego campus goes entirely smoke free

A

fter a year of preparing and educating students on the benefits of a tobacco-free campus, SUNY Oswego will prohibit any tobacco use on campus starting Jan. 1.

By implementing the tobacco-free policy on campus, SUNY Oswego will be joining over 1,400 other colleges and universities across the country, including partnering SUNY schools such as Cortland and the University at Buffalo.

Although SUNY does not require a smoke- and tobacco-free policy on college campuses, it supports and assists colleges in taking the initiative to make their college campus healthier.

“Due to the many health risks that individuals, bystanders and the environment face due to smoking, we feel it is our responsibility as a educational institution to implement a tobacco-free campus,” said Jerald Woolfolk, SUNY Oswego’s vice president for student affairs and enrollment management and chairwoman of the Clean Air Committee.

The committee has been discussing this topic since 2011 and has spent the past few years reviewing research by the Centers for Disease Control, U.S. Surgeon General, NY Quits and American Cancer Society. It has also conducted surveys and focus groups with partnering with smoke-free colleges to make sure they were educating students in the most effective ways.

During its research, the committee found that in New York state, the rate of smoking for those aged 18-24 is 58 percent higher than that of high school students, according to the American Cancer society. In addition, nearly 70 percent of smokers reported that they want to quit.

In April 2014, SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley announced the tobacco-free initiative, saying the goal is to “support the educational mission of the college and to provide a safe, clean and healthy working, living and learning environment.”

Educational process “The policy was initially expected to go into effect in 2014. However, the implementation was delayed until 2015 in order for us to spend the necessary time educating

students on the resources available for them to quit and prepare them for a tobacco-free campus,” Woolfolk said.

The smoke-free policy will prohibit tobacco use including cigarettes, e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco on any college property. The policy will be part of the Oswego Student Code of Conduct.

“We want to focus less on penalization and more on self-regulation and creating a culture that values a smokefree environment,” Woolfolk said. “However, students who violate the policy could face disciplinary charges based on the verdict of the judicial committee just as they would for any other violation at Oswego.”

SUNY Oswego expects people to govern themselves accordingly and treat the Oswego campus like any other public location where smoking is prohibited.

The college will also be offering free smoking cessation, counseling and nicotine replacement products at Mary Walker Health Center for students who are interested in quitting.

OzQuits, a campus-wide campaign launched in April, has made students aware of the new policy and resources available through brochures, signage, tabling and an online forum.

“I don’t know what more we can do than tell students its free, we’re here for you to come see us and it’s not going to cost you a thing to do it,” said Donna Jerrett, a Clean Air Committee member and registered nurse at the college’s Mary Walker Health Center. “We just want to be able to help as many people as possible and give them any information they need about quitting.

“Results are more effective if we help people understand why they smoke, how it affects the body and how to use the products available to them.”

“Personally, I think there’s already less smokers on campus and even more people quitting because they can’t afford to do it anymore and they just don’t want to be owned by something like cigarettes,” Jerrett said. “After all, wanting to quit is the first step.”

Students speak out As January approached, students were talking more about the policy and their overall opinions on Oswego becoming a smoke-free campus.

Paige Francke, a criminal justice major at SUNY Oswego, said the policy is a good idea and will hopefully encourage more people to take a step in the right direction to quit.

“As a non-smoker, I’m happy that I finally won’t have to be exposed to second-hand smoke as I walk through campus,” Francke said. “Hopefully, people will take the initiative to kick the habit now that it will be more of a hassle for them to smoke whenever and wherever they want.”

Lauren Donnelly, a human development major at

SUNY Oswego, is also excited about Oswego becoming tobacco-free.

“I know it can be tough to quit smoking, but students should utilize the free cessation program and nicotine replacements that the school will be offering,” Donnelly said. “I think a lot of the reason people don’t initially quit is because they can’t afford the cost of the necessary resources, but now there should be no excuses for Oswego students not to.”

Morgan Downing, an English major at SUNY Oswego, has been smoking cigarettes for almost three years. She said she thinks implementing the policy is a good idea but doesn’t think it will be enough to make people quit.

“I have mixed feelings about the policy,” Down-

ing said. “I think it will be beneficial to students who don’t want to be around second-hand smoke, but I also feel smoking is a personal choice and it’s wrong for the school to try to control it.”

Woolfolk and Jerrett said they have received positive feedback from most of the campus community and believe this policy will help tobacco users move in the right direction.

“We’re excited to join thousands of other colleges across the nation who have benefited from implementing the policy of a tobacco-free campus,” Woolfolk said.

“Our long-term goal is to provide a healthier generation of students and staff, environment and an overall healthier campus community.”

Q.: What is your advice for a student who is about to graduate from a journalism program?

A.: Just try to find anything and work your way into what you want to do. I didn’t plan on being on TV; I just stumbled into it and I’d say it turned out OK. For the longest time, my plan was that I was going to be an NBC page and I was really disappointed when I never got to be an NBC page.

I still have a little disappointment that I didn’t get to be an NBC page because it’s an amazing fraternity of people that have gone through that program and have gone on to do great things. I always feel that my resume would have been that much better if I had that opportunity. With that said, just try to get something and then move on from there. Students should enjoy this time here; it’s a wonderful time.

There is so much you can get out of this. The more you put into this, the more you are going to get out of it.

Q.: How early in the morning do you have to wake up to be successful?

A.: I think it depends on the individual. Some people get up at 3, some people get up at 6 and some people don’t get up until after the “Today Show” is over. I get up at 3 o’clock. It’s just what I have to do to get the job done.”

Q.: What is the best part of your job being on the “Today Show?”

A.: “Every day is different. You couldn’t possibly plan for it. It is kind of like the Dr. Seuss Book “Oh The Places You’ll Go.” You have no idea what you’re going to do each day but it never ceases to amaze me.”

Q.: When all is said and done, what kind of legacy do you want to leave on the world of meteorology?

A.: Just that I did my best and that people were informed and they felt a little better after they watched than they did before.

Q.: What do you think you gained from being a student at SUNY Oswego?

A.: I think you have a closer relationship with your teachers and professors and a more personal relationship with the school. I have friends that went to Syracuse the same time I was going to Oswego and I definitely felt I got a more hands-on experience.

Q.: I know that you are big into volunteering. What is the message you want to get across about giving back?

A.: “Nobody is an island.

Everyone has received some help somewhere, whether it was from your parents, family, friends or church members. You’re a more well-rounded individual if you know what it’s like to give and how important it is to give back.”

Q.: What worries you about the digital revolution?

A.: You’re competing against a lot of other sources and you try to pick your places where you can do longer journalism and harder journalism but you have to find that balance and it’s a constant dance to find that balance. We try not to look too much at numbers. The thing that worries me about the dark side of the Internet is that just because something is on the Web doesn’t mean it’s true. There is a thinning process that doesn’t seem to happen in newer media because if it’s repeated enough it becomes fact, which would not necessarily happen in print journalism.

Q.: Do you think that TV networks are going to be losing viewers to accessible social media outlets such as YouTube?

A.: I think that people are viewing the YouTube videos and online media in chunks but just like the cliché, I believe that if you build it, they will come. If you put on good TV, people are watching and now they just look at it as they have more choices. It used to be just three networks and now there are a lot different places to consume shows. But if you make it a good show whether it’s on a network or screening surface, people are going to watch it.

Dorm sweet dorm: How to cozy up your new digs

ow that you’ve unpacked your stuff in your dorm room, you may feel like you’re settled, but it’s not quite homey enough. Try these tips to cozy up your room.

Cloth means comfy — and less noise. Get a few accent pillows and a soft throw to form a cushy place to lounge and study on your bed. A fluffy bedside rug offers a soft welcome to the day. Consider a slouchy bean bag chair for relaxing. While posters are go-to decor, flags, quilts or banners add pops of color, too. (Check with your dorm’s rules before putting anything on the walls. Most don’t allow nails or thumbtacks.) Get an area rug if your floor is bare, as it will keep your feet warm and absorb sound, too.

Window treatments such as a swag, topper or sheer panels instantly make stark blinds seem more pleasant without blocking sunlight.

Display personal photos in a fun collage to brighten your walls. Hang a few mirrors in a grouping to make your space seem larger.

Matching mirror shapes or frames helps the grouping seem well put together.

Make your space personal with knickknacks reflecting your hobbies and interests. In addition to their visual appeal, they help break the ice with new roommates and friends of friends visiting your room.

Get any small appliances you lack, as long as

Consider a fan, not only to keep you cool but for the white noise it can offer at night.

Clear the air and create a homey scent with a spray or plug-in air freshener or electric candle warmer, which requires no flame.

Most dorms don’t allow lit candles.

Go green — with plants, that is. Plants add oxygen to the air and make a room feel more like home.

Bring a finned friend to add a peaceful ambiance to your room. Some dorms permit small fish bowls or tanks, but check the rules first.

Brighten up your space with additional lighting. Harsh, overhead fluorescent lights aren’t suitable for reading and certainly don’t evoke a cozy vibe. If you can, remove the stock light cover and use one that is more decorative and sheds softer light into the room. Get a small desk lamp with a softer light or, if you like reading in bed, a clip-on lamp. Accent lights draw attention to different areas of your room.

Try battery-operated candles or stringing white rope lights around a mirror or among your favorite photos. Hang a pendant lamp over your part of the room.

Dorm Living on Campus: Pros and Cons

I

t can be a huge decision when choosing whether to live on campus or off.

While you may be tempted to decide one way or another, it’s imperative that you weight the pros and cons of living on campus before making your final decision.

PROS: • Easier to become involved on campus • Access to all the resources the campus offers (computer labs, library, etc.)

• No parent-enforced curfew • Living close to friends • Easier to be a student worker while living on campus • Less of a commute to class • Avoiding the cost of commuting to and from class every day • Ability to meet with professors more often or, even, at their houses

• Easier to meet with adviser, career planning office, etc.

CONS: • Homesickness • Having to stick to a meal plan • Limited privacy • Not being able to “get away” from campus environment • Having to deal with roommates • Limited access to appliances like stoves, ovens, washers and dryers Inability to enjoy short holiday breaks • Student housing restrictions on parties, drinking, etc.

• Having to listen to your roommate have sex • Fighting for the shower and the bathroom • The chance of being paired with a messy or lazy roommate

Toxic Partners The 10 people you should dump now

t’s a new year and a new semester, and it’s time to spring clean your relationships.

College is a time of experiences. One of the things included in many people’s college experience is the obligatory crappy relationship.

Most of us have at least one boyfriend or girlfriend whose presence in our pasts leaves us scratching our heads and asking, “What was I thinking?”

We all make mistakes, especially when it comes to love. During my college days, my mistake’s name was Joe (name has not been changed because he was far from innocent, and Joe is such a generic name anyway). Joe and I had nothing in common. He wasn’t especially smart, kind, attractive or funny.

I really don’t know what I was thinking. I should’ve dumped Joe (long before he had the chance to dump me).

So in honor of the New Year (and Joe), and the spirit of changing things for the better, I present the list of the 10 types of people you should dump now.

If you are dating one of these types of people, it’s time to turn your love life around. Don’t spend another minute with: 1. The cheater — No one deserves to be cheated on.

It doesn’t matter what your downfalls are; a cheater belongs alone. Save the drama, the stories, the lies and the pain for the cheater and his or her next victim. Send the players packing and start a new game.

2. The fantasy-league devotee — It’s great to have hobbies, but we all know that type of person who is obsessed with something trivial. If your partner’s hobbies rule every second of his or her life, how are you ever going to fit into the picture?

As a significant other, you deserve to be significant. If someone can’t make you such, move on.

3. “The me” monster — Selfishness has to be one of the worst personality traits in a partner. If someone wants you to drop everything and

focus only on him or her, drop that person.

There are two people in a relationship. That means two hearts, two sets of interests and two sets of wants and needs. If your partner is only concerned with his or hers, you will never be happy.

Dump that person and send a message that “the me” monsters need to grow up.

4. The orphan — This person is the one who never wants to let you into his or her inner circle. For all intents and purposes, this person may as well be an orphan. He or she hides you from family and friends, makes excuses and procrastinates letting you in.

Not that someone has to put you in the inner circle in the first few weeks of a relationship, but if time passes and you are still considered an outlier, it’s time to drop the hammer. No one should be an outsider to his or her own relationship.

5. The not-so-innocent keg-stander — This person is the life of the party. Some people revere this individual. It may seem like a lot of fun or glory to date a wellknown party animal, but it’s a recipe for disaster.

Do you really want to spend your college days playing second fiddle to cheap beer in a plastic cup?

Do you want every free moment to be spent on partying and drinking? Leave the keg-stander in the limelight of others and remove him or her from your relationship.

6. The college toddler — Whenever things don’t go his or her way, this person throws tantrums. This person loves fighting, squabbling, and nit picking. This person cries foul at mundane occurrences. This person could also be known as the drama queen or drama king.

There is no reason to infuse your relationships with needless, over-the-top, raging emotions. If your partner has the emotional capacities of a child, don’t try to build an adult relationship with this person. Take your adult feelings and interactions to someone who can handle them and leave the drama for Tyler Hall.

7. The 50 shades of red partner — We all know those people who seem to be perpetually angry. Everything annoys them or makes them upset. This hothead has a temper to be reckoned with and is ready to take it out on you.

Who wants to be paired up with someone like this?

Don’t surround yourself with anger, or it will affect every facet of your life. Leave a trail of red all over this relationship and cut it out.

8. The Pulitzer wannabe — This person has a story for everything. You know something is up, and every time you confront this person, there is an elaborate story or excuse. You know their sordid tales can’t be true, but you want to believe.

Instead of believing in a liar, believe in your ability to make good decisions. Save the fiction for entertainment and don’t put up with it in your relationships.

9. The rolling stone — This person is never content with the way things are. They are always searching for more.

Emily Markstein Peter Hanley Intern at: I Heart Oswego Position: Staff writer Year: Senior Major: Journalism I Heart Oswego is an online newsletter focusing on feature stories in Oswego.

Hanley writes an article every other week whether it is a review, a profile on a local business or an event happening in the city.

The amount of work put into a story varies.

“I covered an event called Scrabblefest for my first story, and the event itself lasted about three hours. It doesn’t include transcribing interviews and writing the actual story as well,” he said.

Hanley has learned to be persistent and adapt. As a journalist, interviews are needed to get the story and if sources don’t respond back, he was able to revise it and find another source that worked.

At I Heart, Hanley has been accustomed to a typical journalist schedule.

“Most of my time is spent preparing for it.”

Intern at: Fort Ontario Position: Researcher Year: Senior Major: History Fort Ontario is a public historic site where visitors can see reenactments, demonstrations and tours of the area. Markstein researches and organizes information about the fort, catalogues items and attends weekly meetings.

Going into the internship she did not realize there was more work that goes into a museum than she thought.

Working eight hours a week she records each and every small item found in the museum making sure that each time she leaves, information is not left unregistered.

A typical workday includes coming into the museum and immediately start on background research of objects to find out if there is anything new to discover in the surrounding area.

“We were given a box from a man in the Civil War. Every object needs a story behind it so I did research on the box and the man who owned it to find out his story,” Markstein explained.

The President’s Office works with the United Way and State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA) where New York state employees may give to any of the charitable organizations that participate within the organization.

Burke researches different organizations for the school to donate toward and also figures out the most effective way to promote various charity events on campus to students and faculty.

“I designed a breakfast contest in November for all the buildings to compete against one another to see who would get the most donors,” she said.

Burke rarely works in the office and depending on the event happening or research involved, the hours vary per week. She attends weekly morning meetings building ideas about the best ways to spread information on donating to a specific organization.

While in the office, she said it has been a great opportunity to collaborate with the staff on ideas and then seeing those ideas come to life.

“My favorite part so far is the hands-on experience with the campaigning

The art department at the university creates programs that train students for careers in many professions such as studio art, graphic design, Web design, illustration and photography.

Burroughs is in charge of taking photos of the art exhibits on and off campus and the different art classes to document changes within the department. Her hours fluctuate per week during the photography process including editing, taking the photos, and scheduling times for the location.

“I love this internship.

Other than being able to work on my own time, it’s a lot of fun and I get to see a lot of different peoples art. I’ve learned a lot about photojournalism and how to take pictures that work well with documenting events,” she said.

Although journalism is her major, she hopes to freelance photograph or become a photojournalist at a news station or newspaper.

“My favorite part would be interacting with the artists while I’m photographing an event. It allows me to hear their story in person and through their artwork,” she said.

Spring Break: Drop Myrtle Beach, Use it to Get Ahead

any students take their spring break as a vacation from their studies, but you can make it part of your preparation for your future. With a few days’ free time, you can improve your future employability.

Terrie Osborn, owner of Resumes Etc., a job hunting strategy firm in Syracuse, encourages students approaching graduation in May to use spring break to network get their resume in order. “Find out about companies and people you want to work for,” she said.

Seek a professional resume writer — or Compass, the office at SUNY Oswego that helps students prepare their resumes, among other things — if you lack the skills to build your own resume.

The strategy of posting your resume on job boards and waiting for your phone to ring won’t cut it anymore.

“You have to have a unique qualification in a very specialized field for that to happen,” Osborn said. “In-

xpressing one’s love to another is a celebrated custom on Valentine’s Day. Sweethearts and family members present gifts to one another, such as cards, candy, flowers and other symbols of affection. Opinions differ as to who was the original Valentine, but the most popular theory is that he was a clergyman who was executed for secretly marrying couples in ancient Rome.

In A.D. 496, Pope Gelasius I declared Feb. 14 as Valentine Day. Esther Howland, a native of Massachusetts, is given credit for selling the first mass-produced valentine cards in the 1840s.

The spirit continues today with even young children exchanging valentine’s cards with their fellow classmates.

They may not do exactly what you want to for your dream job, but if it’s somewhat related, they may help

you get into the industry.

Or, they may know someone who’s looking for new talent.

If it seems like people the age of your parents can’t relate, don’t write them off; they may not fully understand cutting edge technology, for example, but their decades of experience in the workforce gives them a mature perspective.

Start calling companies now to see if you can intern, shadow or fill temporary hours at a company similar to where you want to work someday, ideally doing

something near the type of work you hope to do.

“The No. 1 thing is try to get close to where you want to be as soon as possible,” said Leslie Rose McDonald, founder and president of Pathfinders Career Transition Services Inc. in Liverpool.

Look into possible volunteering opportunities ahead of time. Nonprofit organizations may have roles similar to what you want to fill in the future and would welcome your help. Although you won’t be paid for your efforts, volunteer work looks

good on resumes both for the experience and for the goodwill involved.

After you return to school, keep up with companies and people with which you’ve networked through social media. Comment on their sites and request to connect online.

Thank new network contacts for any meet-ups with a handwritten thank-you note.

That gesture should set you apart from the crowd. Don’t forget to include a card listing your name and contact information.

JOHN LAMPHERE Former Law Enforcement Officer at Helm of Fulton Cayuga Community College campus

O

n John Lamphere’s office wall at Cayuga Community College’s Fulton branch is a picture of Union Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.

The officer is shown leading his 20th Maine Regiment down a boulder-strewn hillside in southern Pennsylvania on July 2, 1863 during the epic Battle of Gettysburg.

Front and center of the charge was the colonel himself.

The successful bayonet charge is considered to be the most famous counterattack and turning point of the Civil War. His order to defend Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg and thwart the Confederate assault saved Major General George Gordon Meade’s Army of the Potomac.

It is with this same courage and conviction that

motivates new CCC Associate Vice President Lamphere as he navigates CCC through a major transition stage.

“That’s the way I do it.

When I was fire chief of the Weedsport Fire Department, I wouldn’t order guys into a burning building. I would order the guys to go into the building with me,” he said.

When he was head of the SWAT team as a member of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Department, he would go in with his squad on a mission charge.

Lamphere has a passion for history, and is an avid Civil War enthusiast and serves as a tour guide at Gettysburg. He also does frequent volunteer public speaking engagements on the subject and is writing a tour book on Gettysburg.

“There’s a difference between sending you off to

your demise and saying, ‘This is going to work because I’m going to be right there with you,’” he said.

“Leadership is not just telling people what to do. It’s leading and showing them, ‘This is what we are going to do’,” he said.

“I knew at about the age of 4 that I wanted to be either a middle linebacker for the New York Giants or a police officer. I couldn’t run a 4.4 40 [yard dash], so I got into law enforcement,” he said.

Lamphere spent 30 years of his life as a deputy. He’s had loaded guns pointed at

him. He was once set on fire and has the burn scars to prove it. He’s been bitten.

“If you can survive through 30 years of law enforcement, you can survive through anything,” he said.

Lamphere, 60, characterizes working in law enforcement as “supreme periods of inactivity and that one blip of intensity.”

“This position to me is just as intense in many ways. You can identify needs and see immediate change,” the Weedsport native said.

“I’m a passionate person.

I believe I display the same level of passion watching a Giants’ game, talking about a 12-pound Napoleon Civil War cannon or the fire department, as I do with my kids and friends,” he said.

for the sheriff’s position, he earned his master’s degree in public administration through the state police.

He was a criminal justice instructor at CCC, and started work on a second master’s degree in history.

That would all change with a series of phone conversations with new CCC President Gregory DeCinque.

The CCC leader named Lamphere the new dean of the Fulton campus, and he was then promoted to associate vice president in June of 2014.

DeCinque basically gave Lamphere the mission of determining what needs there are at the Fulton campus and to enact the appropriate changes.

While the new River Glen Plaza location features more space than the former Broadway location, it still has limitations, Lamphere said.

“Some of these limitations have an adverse effect upon student retention and also upon services for students,” Lamphere said.

Lamphere has a shortterm game plan that will solve some of those missing elements.

Plans call for the creation of a student lounge, complete with a dining area and space for club activities.

Lamphere said he is also confident that a Taco Del Mar location will be moving into the facility as well. He is also eyeing the possibility of establishing a new fitness center.

The Faculty-Student Association recently selected Barnes & Noble to provide bookstore services for the college, and Barnes & Noble developed a vacant storefront as the new bookstore for Fulton students. The bookstore features a Starbucks café.

Meanwhile, efforts are being made to introduce a taste of culture to the Fulton CCC campus. Nancy Fox, director of CNY Arts Center, is establishing another location at CCC. “I’m trying to put the word community into community college,” Lamphere said.

Carla DeShaw, dean of community education and workforce development at CCC, along with the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation, is intending to spearhead the creation of an advanced manufacturing center at the Fulton campus.

In addition, it has been learned through meetings with Oswego Health that med techs and occupational therapists are needed in the area. As a result, CCC is looking to create a COTA lab that is expected to be up and running in two years.

Lamphere is also active partnering with various businesses and industries to discover what workforce needs lie ahead in Oswego County.

“We want to try to keep Oswego kids working here,” he said.

‘Management by wandering’ — Lamphere is an advocate of “management by wandering,” which essentially means interacting in person on a daily basis with staff and students.

“I’m not checking on them. I’m checking in on them,” he said.

“I believe in talking to people and being seen,” said Lamphere, who strolls through CCC’s hallways addressing students by their first names.

While Lamphere “wanders,” he is equipped with a portable radio in order to be accessible to everyone at any given time on campus.

“If I am on site, you can call me in a heartbeat,” he said.

“I will stop in at every single corner of this campus and talk to people. I believe in high visibility,” he said.

“You need to have people buy into you and believe what you are doing is the right thing.”

Lamphere credits his law enforcement background with helping him master people skills.

“Law enforcement taught me patience and to not make snap decisions,” he said.

His late father Earl — a conservation officer — taught him the valuable lesson that good things come to those who wait.

“I would say to someone, ‘I can’t arrest you today, but I’m going to find out if you are doing these things or not’,” he said.

Lamphere comes from a long lineage of law enforcers who began serving in the mid-19th century.

Lamphere, a Lakeshore Road, Oswego resident, is a 1976 graduate of SUNY Oswego.

Comeback trail — Lamphere said it is important to let students, faculty and employees know that CCC is willing to change and provide full service to all involved.

“They know it’s coming.

It’s kind of like Christmas,” Lamphere said.

The added services will also be available for the general public’s enjoyment as well, he noted.

Among the challenges facing CCC recently is a depleted fund balance and overestimated student enrollment figures that put the college in the red.

CCC was forced to lay off workers and to sustain itself on an austerity budget as a result of tough financial times. However, Lamphere said, “We have gone 180 degrees.”

President DeCinque and his team are creating a strategy to attract more students and revenue through a project he calls Cayuga 2020.

“Everyone is saying we are done, not just the Fulton campus but Auburn as well.

We’re not,” Lamphere said.

“We’re here to stay.”

“A lot of people saw no horizon,” he said.

“I think they see a horizon. There is a new tomorrow,” he noted.

Lamphere said a major task when he arrived was to get people to understand that financial problems are a thing of the past.

“The problems were not the result of the current college president and employees,” he said. “We are changing this now.”

When Lamphere is not taking care of business at CCC, he is “trying to cut fingers off with power tools,” he said.

One of his hobbies is building birdhouses and bird feeders for anyone who requests them. He takes rough-cut lumber and constructs them and has given hundreds away.

His significant other, Liz McCormick, is a full profes-

sor at CCC. He has two daughters: Jolene, who lives in King of

Prussia, Pa., and is the deputy director of child services in Chester County; and Ryann,

who teaches English as a Second Language in Hong Kong.

Studying abroad enriches college experience

inety-seven percent of study-abroad students reportedly found employment within 12 months of graduation, twice the amount of success that college graduates who didn’t study abroad experienced.

Although only 1 percent of college students actually study abroad, it has proved to be beneficial for a student’s academic performance, personality development and future career, studies show.

Caitlin Pollard, education abroad specialist at SUNY Oswego, studied abroad in Australia while attending SUNY Brockport.

That inspired her to take a career path in the study abroad office.

“Studying abroad is a great way to allow students to see a different type of academic system,” Pollard said. “It lets them experience another culture, academic setting and get a different viewpoint on education as well.”

As for the professional benefits of studying abroad, statistics show a significant success rate professionally for students who traveled during college. Studying abroad is widely regarded as a great portfolio builder, she noted.

If a resume shows a student has studied abroad, “it is more than likely going to jump to the top of the pile when it comes to the job search,” Pollard said.

It makes students stand out because it shows they have the courage to navigate another country’s health, transportation and educational systems, Pollard said.

It shows students took the initiative and are willing to develop resiliency and take on challenges, she noted.

Programs such as internships, research and student teaching overseas are other ways for students who are studying abroad to gain hands-on practical experience.

“Seeing new cultures, experiencing the ways that other cultures live, analyze and understand different events taking place in the world forces a student to grow enormously,” Pollard said. “Whether students do a week-long course or a full year, they are going to experience something that is going to challenge them and make them have to be a grown up.”

Due to time constraints and finances, many students feel studying abroad isn’t a realistic possibility. However, these apparent obstacles are manageable when looking at the big picture, Pollard said.

“You’re never going to have another time in your life after graduation where you can up and go for a semester, summer or a couple weeks at a time and go overseas,” Pollard said.

“College students are at the time in their life where things are much more flexible and traveling to a different country isn’t as life altering as it will be after graduation.”

The student experience Devin Storment, a student worker in the office of International Education and Programs at SUNY Oswego, said she learned more things about herself while studying abroad in London for six months than she learned during her four years at Oswego.

“We live in such a globalized society today and all employers are looking for individuals who have an understanding of the world and different cultures,” Storment said.

Although she did not take part in an internship, she gained a semester’s worth of college credits and a lifetime worth of valuable experiences. Due to studying abroad, she learned her biggest passion was travelling and that eventually she would like to move abroad and pursue a career in tourism.

Although she had traveled internationally before, having the chance to live and engage in a different culture for so long really cemented her love for travel, Storment noted.

Francis Kelly, a senior at SUNY Oswego, also gained positive experiences while studying abroad in France.

He didn’t speak any French when arriving but was able to work with people from all over the world and adapt to a different cultural setting.

While in France, he took advantage of his surroundings and traveled to bordering countries such as Italy, Spain and Ireland.

“My advice for people who are looking to study abroad in the near future is to take advantage of your settings and learn about the way other cultures think, communicate and act,” Kelly said. “It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I got to meet and work with people from all over the world.”

The SUNY Oswego study abroad office offers more than 80 overseas academic programs in over 30 countries. Through partner universities abroad, programs are offered through summer, semester or academic year sessions.

Consider Summer School

hen the weather starts to warm up, most students focus on the end of studies and the commencement of summer jobs and summer fun. But you should consider summer school. Usually offered in block class format, summer school can help you in several ways.

Meg Osborne, interim director of student engagement at Cayuga Community College, said that summer school Osborne “can help students reach their academic objectives more quickly.”

If you can knock off a few classes during the summers of your academic career, you may be able to graduate a semester early, depending upon class availability.

College is about more than academics. Cultural enrichment and forging lifelong friendships and connections happen when students participate in extracurricular activities. But some students find that taking a standard load of 18 credits can be very demanding when they’ve joined college groups or if they work during the school year. By taking summer school classes, they can better handle the lighter load during the fall and spring semesters while still enjoying a well-rounded college experience.

“For the student who is exploring possible areas of interest or for the student who wants to get ahead,

summer school can be a good thing,” said Gwen Kay, director of SUNY Oswego’s honors program. “I took summer classes to figure out a second major, because I didn’t feel that I had the space in my schedule with my first major.”

If your grades are slipping, taking summer school classes can help you pull up your GPA since you’ll have more time to focus on studying with fewer classes and no extracurricular activities. Don’t think of summer school courses as “easy A” classes, however.

“They tend to be shorter,

so students have to work quickly,” Osborne said.

“Sometimes, if a student hasn’t worked in that compressed time frame before, they may not be prepared for doing that much work each day.”

You can’t let a day or two slip by without doing reading or homework since you attend the same class every day. Summer school isn’t the place to slack off.

“Summer school moves quickly, in one half or one quarter of the time of the regular semester,” Kay said. “An online course is best for the very organized student, as it will not only move quickly but require many hours of computer/study time each day in lieu of seat time.”

Summer school provides “an immersive quality, that for some students is beneficial,” Osborne said.

into a topic intensely, summer school could be great for you.

Before signing up for summer school, discuss it with your academic adviser to make sure the courses available fit into your academic plan. If you take summer school courses at a different institutions, make sure the credits transfer.

If you live on campus, make sure student housing is still available or make arrangements for your housing needs for the weeks of summer school.

Powerful influence — The group is comprised of 62 students, two faculty advisers, several business owners and a 20-person business advisory board.

Enactus also partners with Pathfinder Bank in Oswego to feature MoneySmart, a financial literacy project. Enactus members conduct financial seminars for community members. Information on basic financial concepts such as balancing a checkbook, using credit cards, average career salaries, budgeting and applying for loans is presented.

Enactus also facilitates the Clothe Oswego Project.

The objective is to purchase warm clothing for underprivileged or struggling families in the Oswego area as well as clothing that will give first-time job seekers a professional look. Enactus partners with a local business, Zink Shirts, to accomplish this project’s goal.

In exchange for a project business plan designed to build more business among the college community, Zink Shirts donates 10 percent of all profits raised through the project to the Clothe Oswego fund.

The name of the organization changed recently from Students in Free Enterprise.

Due to the name change, Enactus members began recruiting efforts armed with new business cards, pens and new signs for tabling events such as SUNY Oswego’s annual Student Involvement Fair.

“We try to sell people by telling them this program is a great resume builder and a great way to get involved and network,” he said.

DIGITIZE uses outreach to find out who is in need.

Members attend networking events and meet and partner with various marketing companies in the city to see who needs help.

While the program is gaining popularity, DIGITIZE will most likely develop an application process in order to focus on those most in need of its services.

Active Minds Helps Fight Suicide Campus group: speak openly about mental health issues

S

uicide rates among young adults aged 15-24 has tripled since the 1950’s and has become the second leading cause of death among college students, according to www. college.com.

With suicide rates as elevated as they are in the range of college-aged students, colleges and universities are trying to diminish this rapidly increasing trend through mental health programs.

Active Minds is one nonprofit organization with chapters at over 400 colleges dedicated to telling students to speak openly about mental health issues. It strives to encourage healthy thinking in order to curb this growing suicide trend.

At college campuses such as SUNY Oswego, students involved in Active Minds plan activities, events and lectures to promote positive mental health; explore coping mechanisms and experience educational seminars on the symptoms of mental health; and inform

students on what resources are available to them on campus, said Alison Malmon, executive director and founder of Active Minds.

Two of the leading health issues that students report interfere with their ability to thrive on campuses are stress and depression.

Due to this, Active Minds created Stress Less Week during the first week of December as an opportunity for college chapters to plan stress-related activities for students during finals.

These can range from a carnival in the quad, local animal shelters bringing in dogs and informational lectures on suicide warning signs, Malmon noted.

Promoting positive mental health and dialogue about mental issues can prevent suicide, she noted.

Mental illness tied in “At least 90 percent of people who die because of suicide have a diagnosable mental health disorder at the time that they died,” Malm-

on said. “We need to talk about suicide and suicide prevention alongside the illnesses and disorders that cause it. That way, people know how to make the connection between mental illness and suicide.”

Parents can create this dialogue before their children even reach college by letting them know that they are at an age where mental health issues may start to present themselves. It is also important that students are aware of the resources available to them on campus.

Malmon said students must know they are not alone and recovery is real and possible.

“People continue to look at depression as a character flaw and not a real-life curable illness,” said Debra Graham, the Central New York director of The American Foundation For Suicide Prevention.

The AFSP is the largest nonprofit suicide prevention organization in the world.

It uses scientific research to

help find more useful ways to help understand and prevent suicide among college students.

“Our job is to make society more aware of the warning signs so people find the treatment that is available to them,” Graham said.

Watch out for signs Common warning signs to look for are extreme changes in behavior, isolation from family and friends and an increased use of alcohol or drugs.

“Often people who suffer from depression will try to self medicate using drugs and alcohol and as time goes on, they end up having an addiction on top of a mental illness,” Graham said.

The problem is not enough people outside of the behavioral health field are aware of the signs of someone having suicidal thoughts.

The people suffering in silence aren’t recognized and identified as having thoughts of suicide, so they never even make it in to see the behavioral specialists, Graham noted.

One program that AFSP offers to make the college community more aware of suicide is safe talk training. It provides suicide awareness

for anyone who is interested within a designated community. It teaches students how to recognize depression not only in their peers but also within themselves.

“The more people that are educated within the community, the better chance of connecting those people with resources that can help them,” Graham said.

AFSP also recently created the first interactive screening program, which is a web-based interactive screening questionnaire that determines a person’s level of risk for suicide. Anonymity of users is guaranteed.

A counselor then reviews the answers and provides a personal response.

Due to the fact the program reaches people at risk who may not seek help on their own, hundreds of college campuses, workplaces and even the National Football League are using the ISP. “Seeing as suicide is the leading cause of death for college-aged students, we’ve worked really hard to build relationships with colleges in order to bring this program to them and help prevent suicide in any way possible,” Graham said.

Oswego’s Weather Man Bill Gregway has devoted more than half of his life to weather observing

B

ill Gregway found his passion for weather almost half a century ago and he has been on cloud nine ever since.

At the age of 80, Gregway continues to serve the Oswego community through his daily weather observations and recordings.

He is a trained cooperative weather observer for the National Weather Service.

Gregway, who retired from the city of Oswego as a draftsman, has been recording daily readings of temperature, precipitation and snowfall at his coop station Oswego East for 46 years.

The U.S. Army veteran first developed a passion for weather while delivering newspapers as a young boy.

“It didn’t matter how fast I pedaled, I always got wet,”

Gregway said. “But I’ve had an interest in weather for as long as I can remember.”

Gregway’s uncle served as a weather observer with the Army in China during World War II. When he returned home, he provided Gregway with his Army field manuals from World War II, which also fueled his nephew’s passion for the weather.

Gregway’s high school earth science teacher — who worked in the Army Corps — also helped heighten his interest about weather.

“As a native of this town, I think Oswego is a prime location to observe weather because I get to enjoy the perks of every season,” Gregway said.

“Oswego also played a very important role in the history of weather observation.”

weather multiple times a day at certain times,” Gregway said. “The college may have lost the station but it was the greatest gain I’ve ever received.”

Gregway is in charge of the official weather station Oswego East, which is fully equipped with up-to-date weather-recording instruments from the National Weather Service. The station is set up in his back yard, only a mile away from Lake Ontario. His monthly weather observations are distributed to the Buffalo National Weather Service and The Palladium-Times in Oswego.

During his career as weather observer, Gregway has witnessed some of the most memorable storms of all time in Oswego County.

At the top of his list is the famous blizzard of 1966 where over 103 inches of snow had fallen in under five days accompanied by wind speeds of 60 mph.

While most people stayed locked in their house, Gregway trudged through massive snowfall to observe and record the epic event.

Gregway also has continued a hobby that was passed on to him by a fellow meteorologist many years ago. By observing trees and flowers in the months preceding spring, he is able to record whether the spring season will be early or late.

“It’s more of an observation that I keep to myself, but I always look forward to observing and recording certain flowers and trees around my house during spring,” Gregway said.

Over his 46 years of service, the National Weather Service has recognized Gregway on numerous occasions, including with its prestigious Thomas Jefferson Award. This award is presented annually to approximately five of 11,000 observers for unusual and outstanding accomplishments in the field of meteorological observations.

After open-heart surgery in 2013, Gregway was out of the loop in regards to weather observing for a short period of time. Fortunately enough, he has neighbors who understand his passion for weather and have helped record the weather on days that he has not been able to.

The heart surgery did not slow him down at all from pursuing his passion for weather.

“I attend rehab three times a week and always keep myself moving around,” Gregway said. “I’ve already observed weather for 46 years and I’m hoping to make it to 50.”

The distance seems so close, nearly palatable, yet elusive for many graduates working at jobs well below the potential of their education’s preparation.

The longer they earn less than they need to pay off college debt, the dimmer glows their dream of financial freedom, especially if credit card debt gobbles up their paychecks.

Even without debt haunting them, who wants to work a dead-end job after studying so hard to earn a degree?

Leslie Rose McDonald, founder and president of Pathfinders Career Transition Services, Inc. in Liverpool, believes in the power of online networking. She said that the largest growing age segment on LinkedIn is 20-somethings.

“Now they’re catching on that’s where to be seen professionally,” she said.

If you’re not sure how and what to put on a LinkedIn page, “look at the format of others’ LinkedIn pages to have a good idea that’s how to represents yourself,” McDonald said.

It also pays to post carefully on other social media since many employers screen applicants on popular platforms like Facebook.

“If they see too many pictures of you hoisting beers, you don’t get the call [for an interview],” McDonald said. “Manage social media effectively.”

That doesn’t mean you can’t be yourself online, present your best side. Don’t post anything in bad taste or that makes you appear irresponsible.

Most jobs aren’t found on job boards but through word-of-mouth. In-person networking certainly helps let people know you’re looking for work. Talk with anyone you can about your industry, such as people at the local chamber of commerce.

Join local public speaking groups not only to hone your skill but for networking.

Prepare a resume in case someone with whom you connect wants to pass it on to a hiring agent.
