Osun: Hubris Trumps Hubris

By Olakunle Abimbola In Osun, hubris just trumped hubris — alleged arrogance of performance, trumping bumbling hedonism, venality and vanity.

It was an ultra-close call — and it wasn’t pretty!

Up till the last second, the wide and merry way to Ekiti, Ayo Fayose’s Ekiti, was beckoning — satanic allure, charm, magic, force and all.

But as in Ekiti, Osun’s escape came from the Biblical rejected stone; which became the crucial pillar, in Gboyega Oyetola’s win.

Dayo Adeyeye, a run-away progressive, in Ekiti, nicked the Kayode Fayemi encore.

Imagine what could have happened, had Adeyeye not broken ranks with Fayose, thus exiting with the bulk of his Ise-Orun votes?

In Osun, it was the much vilified Iyiola Omisore that made the difference. Whatever his controversial political biography, history would record his critical support, which tilted the scale, when it mattered most.

Otherwise? Like Fayose’s Ekiti, Ademola Adeleke would have vaulted Osun right back into the Stone Age. Or how would you fancy a 58-year old, that flunked his school certificate examination in 1981, but is linked to an alleged examination forgery in 2017, for the same O’ Level certificate, even as a sitting senator of the Federal Republic, gunning for a South West governorship in 2018?

What people vote such a persona, and hope all would be well? That is the depth of Osun’s narrow escape, with less than 500 votes — the closest in Nigerian gubernatorial election history!

Still, like Ekiti, which plumbed the Fayose debacle, the Omisore intervention may yet prove very costly — except both sides strictly stick to the terms of their deal. But more on that presently.

The Osun see-saw is clearly a grim metaphor of acute retardation in Yoruba political thinking. In a South West that prides itself unrepentantly progressive, basking in the infallibility of the Obafemi Awolowo vision, a reactionary incubus is setting in — and its long shadow seems getting longer by the day.

— at least, in the Yoruba South West.

Yet, all that seemed not to matter.

The Afenifere, in Omisore’s Social Democratic Party (SDP), seemed ready to cut a deal with Adeleke, ideological warts, barrenness and all. At that fatal moment, their ancestral feud with Bola Tinubu triumphantly trumped their fealty to Awo’s developmental ideology!

It took an Omisore, pariah in good times, comrade in grudge times, to puncture their delusory ballon; and show a far keener sense, of both history and posterity.

It is eerie, indeed, that Osun’s September 22 election nearly repeated history, ironically at the dawn of an earlier epochal developmental push, in the old Western Region.

But some elite back then, as some Osun elite now, thumbed down the project, in a blitz of fearsome propaganda, led by the opposition National Council of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC).

Osun Governorship election held on September 22 and rerun held on September 27 2018 respectively have come and gone, but the lessons and reminiscence of the occasion will linger on for years to come.

The entire people of Osun, the leaders and people in position of authority and the teeming youth should learn one or two lessons from the election.

The Osun election has shown that Yoruba nation is gradually joining the bandwagon of segment of this country where ‘Money’ is everything. People no longer care how you got your money. People no longer care about your background, moral values and your educational background. This has never been our belief as Yoruba until now. Yorubas are always proud of their values, integrity and holds their head high when it comes to academic excellence. But it is so disgracing to see even some so called elites/ educated citizen of Osun supporting mediocrity. Where are we going

The youth should learn from this election that whatever you have to do should be done diligently, perfectly and excellently, irrespective of your background. from this? This trend, if not quickly nipped in the bud will automatically erode the values and integrity of our nation. Yoruba leaders, it is time to act.

To our political stalwarts, this election shows that as a leader, you should have a listening hear to criticism, comments, suggestions and advice given by your subordinates. Do not be an alpha and omega in decision making. Learn to manage success, always remember and never neglect those who are with you when you are nothing. Any leader who flaunts this rule is heading for outright destruction. So, leaders let the voice of your

subordinates count.

The youth should learn from this election that whatever you have to do should be done diligently, perfectly and excellently, irrespective of your background.

Whether you are from an affluent/ rich family or poverty-stricken background make sure that whatever you lay your hands on is conclusive and certificated. This is because you might need that certification one day and it will be too late to get it if you don’t have it and this will work against you. This issue of education and certificate played a vital role in this election and this even partially decided who

Time To Compensate A Core Loyalist

By Goke Awoyemi That Babajide Christopher Omoworare, the Senator representing Osun East Senatorial District is a loyalist to the core is stating the obvious.

He is not only loyal to the party and leadership but also loyal to his constituency and abhors nomadic politics as he has never been seen dumping one political platform for another in the course of his political career because of inordinate ambition.

Thus, he is resolute, focused and determined to succeed. More instructive is the fact that his personal life is rancor-free and this has culminating effect on his political life which is not only devoid of rancor but also devoid of violence and controversy.

Born to a family with a deep history of nationalism, politics and public service about 49 years ago, his father late Chief Joseph Larewaju Omoworare was a school principal and Councilor in Ile-Ife during his lifetime. His mother late Princess Teniade Areoye Omoworare (Nee Aderemi) was the daughter of Ooni Adesoji Tadenikawo Aderemi, who during his peaceful reign as Ooni of Ife for over 50 years, was the first Black African Governor and facilitated the establishment of University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife). His paternal grandfather Pa Daniel Omoworare was a founding member of Egbe Agba Afenifere in those good old days when patriotism, loyalty, determination and dedication were the yardstick for holding public office and not pecuniary gains.

Senator Omoworare, a legal practitioner and consultant of about 27 years was elected on the platform of Alliance for Democracy (AD) to represent Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency in Lagos State House of Assembly between 1999 and 2007. He chaired various Committees including Committees on Judiciary, Ethics and Privileges, Human Rights and Public Petitions and ultimately Majority Leader during which he influenced so many developmental projects to his constituency. At the formative stage of Action Congress (AC), he escaped death by the whiskers when Alhaji Hassan Olajokun was killed at Gbongan junction. The assailants pointed assault rifles in his head in the presence of his then 4-years-old daughter, kidnapped him, stole his car and threw him off a moving vehicle at Awe, Oyo State. That experience, rather than deter him only served to reinforce his resolve to progressive ideals. In 2011, contesting under the platform of

On immediate expediencies, he must consummate, to the letter, the Omisore deal. Otherwise, he risks an election-time ally turn an implacable foe.

Besides, such unconsummated deals, in Ekiti, gave Ayo Fayose political resurrection, that almost doomed all Ekiti to collective death.

Osun Governorship Election And Clannish Loyalty The Osun 2018 gubernatorial election has come and gone. But its ripple effects will not go away for a long time to come. Ambitions were exhibited at high and low levels, some inordinate, right from the time of the primaries, down to the elections proper. There’s no gain saying that most contestants that came out did not even take proper time to test the waters before jumping into it, and had to beat a three-hundred and sixty degree retreat even before the heat started. Also, there were some who merely came out to be noticed and possibly get some crumbs of appointment when the eventual winner would have emerged. Someone even told me in confidence that some of the candidates or aspirants as the case may be, are into the race for instant economic gains. How this is possible still confounds me. But as in most things that occurred during the election, nothing is impossible or could be ruled out. The rumour mill even had it that a particular candidate was asked to step down after being offered a humongous financial reward by a big-fish and candidate of an opposition party. It is democratic inclusion taken too far to be in a contest for such unserious and selfish reasons. But I often ask myself: what could make one enter into a race not to win and to beat a tactical retreat even before the whistle was blown.

But sadly, the entire west was the worst for it during Obasanjo’s reign.

Lagos, for example, will not forget in good time how it was financially strangulated because of a mere constitutional crisis over local government creation, which could have been resolved over the phone or, at worst, through the court processes which was eventually applied.

All the above make me wonder if we will ever make progress in Osun if we refuse to change from our primordially-engendered voting pattern which we witnessed in the last gubernatorial election. Check the political base of the major candidates and see the bulk vote pattern. Candidates Moshood Adeoti, Ademola Adeleke, Iyiola Omisore, as well as even our own Ilerioluwa had their bulk votes from their respective zones or local governments. Even though the incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola was not a contestant in the race, he was an interested party by association. It is easy to say that the candidates are popular in their respective bases, and to even go further to say all politics is local. But developmental politics has moved beyond that. I would have expected a scenario where a candidate may not be outrightly rejected in his or her areas of origin but massively voted for in certain one or more areas outside.

The fact that Ogbeni couldn’t impressively win his area of origin points to two salient points which elude some observers. One, it means that the Ijeshas are probably politically advanced beyond sectional interests. Two, it could point out the person of Ogbeni, like many Ijeshas of his ilk, who does not discriminate between an indigene and a non-indigene in giving largesse. In this case, they might be expecting to be given preferential treatment far and above others.

Osun: APC’s Victory And Continuity Project

The Osun governorship election may have come and gone though, the tension it generated for critical stakeholders in Osun democratic project especially for members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as its keenly contested nature, cannot be easily forgotten. Of course, it will continue to linger in human memory just as it will also for a long time serve as a reference point for political analysts whenever issues of electoral contest become a subject of national discourse.

The election, which has been adjudged free, fair and credible by both local and international observers, remains the most keenly contested and most tense in the annals of electoral contest in Osun, nay, Nigeria. This remains an indisputable fact. Given the nature of the election; the very marginal figure with which the APC emerged as the winner; more of a narrow escape, it was quite obvious that something went wrong within the progressives’ camp. But this is not the subject of analysis for this piece. What is important is that the progressives were able to laugh last despite the much tension and apprehension the election brought on them. Also, the nature of the election gave them the opportunity to look back and see where mistakes have been committed and the need to make necessary corrections so as to be able to avert such an experience in future elections.

The role money played in the election is important to mention as it exposed the nature of our politics to be getting increasingly monetised by the day. As living witnesses, we all saw how the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that came second in the election almost hijacked victory through inducement of voters with money. And on the part of the electorate, we could see also the premium many placed on immediate gain rather than enduring ideals. How people

But it also tells us the extent money can go in influencing the minds of the people in a massively impoverished society like ours and this tells us that there’s a big challenge before our leaders at all levels to urgently address the issue of massive poverty ravaging the land. Otherwise, our democracy is in danger.

For God’s sake who could ever believe that the ruling party would be so punched to that level in spite of Ogbeni Aregbesola’s stellar performance in the state? However, any society that places emphasis on material wealth - rather than positive and enduring values - will always face such

experience. But of utmost concern to me here is the issue of Osun continuity project; the good governance that defined the outgoing Aregbsola era.

As the results of the election were trickling in and it seemed the opposition PDP would carry the day, I was overwhelmed by a feeling of sadness and I felt sorry for my dear state as I could imagine the setback that good governance, education, economic prosperity and peaceful democratic atmosphere as experienced under Governor Aregbesola would suffer should the PDP succeed in manipulating its way into power again as it set out to achieve.

The eventual victory of the APC made possible by the rerun election in

a few local governments where the PDP’s anti-democratic practices became obvious, was more of divine than human factor. And this is why the Osun people must continue to give glory to God for the outcome of the election which indicates continuity of the good and pro-people programmes of the Aregbesola administration. But more importantly, they should be more grateful to God that the peaceful democratic atmosphere that has berthed in the state since Ogbeni mounted the horse of political leadership, will continue; as against the preAregbesola era reign of terror that would have found abode again in the state had the PDP had its way. This is what makes me happy personally. I say this much because the PDP elements, in their characteristic nature, in the hope of winning the election when the victory was initially going their way, had started terrorising the town by unleashing attacks on APC members and their supporters. They even reportedly killed an APC party agent in a place called Esa-odo in Obokun local government.

For the aforementioned reasons, this writer is happy that the political status-quo will remain in the state for years to come, but what makes me happier is the calibre of the person that will step into Aregbesola’s shoes. Being a technocrat, an accomplished administrator and financial guru, there is no doubt that Gboyega Oyetola is competent enough to take Osun to a higher level. With his track record both in the private and public sector Osun needs a leader of Oyetola’s ilk at this stage to move it forward. Having being lucky to have a leader like Ogbeni who elevated the state from developmental nadir to an enviable position amongst the comity of states in the federation, Osun cannot afford to slip back into that inglorious PDP era when infrastructural development and peaceful democratic atmosphere were sent on exile.

Conclusively, I will like to congratulate the good people of Osun for another great opportunity God has given them to continue to enjoy their peace under the APC government. It’s only in an atmosphere of peace that our democracy can flourish and economic prosperity can be guaranteed. Leadership of course comes with lots of challenges and it’s not going to be different for Oyetola who, by God’s grace, will become Osun’s chief helmsman come next month, one cannot but wish him a peaceful, prosperous and successful tenure ahead while also wishing the outgoing Governor a happy landing.
