“We went into the massive construction of roads including federal roads because of our firm belief that no meaningful development can take place if there is no infrastructure, especially good roads on ground”, the governor restated.

What this means is that they can now have a home of their own.

The Housing scheme, the first in the Southwest will have a minimum of 50 houses per location with a community centre, shopping mall, an elementary and middle school, private health centre among other things that would make life comfortable for the teachers. Essentially it will be an economic zone of prosperity.

Though, there are many factors responsible for unemployment and firstly, there is low standard of education in Nigeria, hence, youth of nowadays can’t compete with their counterparts from other parts of the world before ending up in the labour market.

Another factor is favoritism, as people get employed based on where they come from and the persons you are connected to.

However, these should not be allowed by youth to way them down, as there are many platforms for them to improve their

skills. Many graduates do not think it is essential to empower themselves with skills that would further enhance their chances of getting jobs such as Information Communication

Technology (ICT) among others. Those who eventually acquire such skills get a higher chance of getting employed.

Agriculture is a big boost to the economy but many see it as a dirty job with little or no return, hence based on ignorance, they abandon agriculture. This is the same situation in several

other sector where youth can leverage on.

These categories of youths do not search on ways of getting themselves selfemployed, they prefer to

sit at home and wait for someone to employ them.

Even some of them who have ideas and not financially buoyant enough to bring their ideas to reality prefer to remain silent, which is very unfortunate.

All these have led many youths to drug abuse, thuggery, suicide,

prostitution and many other vices. Sometimes, it results to emotional and mental stress, and low economic growth.

To address this situation, it must be the responsibility of all stakeholders. One, the government must ensure that efforts are made to improve on the standard of education. Employers should be more concerned about employing people who would bring development to their companies, rather than being emotional.

Also, youths should acquire more skills relevant to their field that would increase their chances of employment, so that if white-collar job is not available, they would be able to stand on their own.

There is no doubt in the fact that Governor Aregbesola has more than delivered on his electoral promises as enshrined in his Six-Point Integral Action Plan, entitled ‘My pact with the people of Osun’, also known as the “Green Book” . If there’s anyone still, this has settled the scores.

Other five schools in the last category; Anglican Middle/High School Ife Odan; Oba Laoye and Ansaru-Islam Middle School, Ede; Oluorogbo Middle School, Ile-Ife; Shekinah Schools, Inisa and Osun North Anglican Diocesan Comprehensive High School, Agbeye got the consolation prizes of N200,000 each.

This 2018 Edition of the school competition will be concluded with the Grand Finale to be held on November 21, 2018 as part of the programmes of the inauguration of the Governor Elect, Alhaji Oyetola. The champion will go home with a giant trophy and N2 million, the runner up with N1m and the 3rd placed team will go away with N750,000.

This type of coincidence does not just happen. It simply means that it is God that is ordering your steps. God is always proving His presence and touch in your life. I join millions of your admirers and students to celebrate you today. Mr Governor! For 8 years, you served as the head of State Government and the indisputable leader of the executive branch, you were saddled with the execution of state laws, alongside the responsibility of appointing state executive, diplomatic, regulatory, and judicial officers subject to the approval of the State House of Assembly members. You had the powers to proclaim the State Assembly at the beginning of their legislative assignments and the sublime powers to dissolve them when their tenure expired.

You had the power of veto which could only be overridden by a two-thirds vote of the State Assembly.

You had the powers to appoint all commissioners and advisers subject to the approval of the State House of Assembly. You had the power to make executive orders that were grounded in Law. You had the power to nominate the Chief judge of the Stateand all other Judges of the State High Courts, President of the State Customary Court of Appeal and all other Judges, Magistrates and Presidents and members of the Customary Courts, all in consultation with the House of Assembly and in some cases approved by the National Judicial Commission. You have the powers to appoint the Attorney General, the Chief Law Officer of the State and the only such officer that has the power of nolleprosecui. As Governor of this State, you had the power to grant pardons and reprieves to those having infractions with the law. Equally, you had the power to approve death sentence passed on any condemned felon by courts of competent jurisdiction. Yet, you were calm with power with the least appeal to the worst in us, including your detractors.

Ogbeni RaufAdesoji Aregbesola, the Constitution of Nigeria contains an ineligibility clause that forbids the Governor of a State (and all other executive officers) from simultaneously being a member of the State House of Assembly. But you are the 27th member of the Osun State House of Assembly as you were gratuitously awarded the honour by all the members of the House at a special session. By that honour, you are free to bear the title ‘HonourableAregbe’, except that you are not title-crazy. You taught all of us that nations are built by exemplary men and women and sustained by institutions that promote good governance and socio-economic development.

Definitely not high-sounding titles. My leader, you are that rare shining example of one such a person in our State of Osun. Until you came, our State was in the woods. I am happy to say that you are leaving a better legacy for posterity, a legacy of prosperity visible enough for all to see. You are such a wonder.

OgbeniAregbe, no doubt, States are an important part of a country. By the coincidence of our history, Osunis just not a State, but the capital city of Yoruba race. As Governor, you witnessed and ruled side by side with two Ooni of Ife as a self-styled Oranmiyan. It was an unusual coincidence. However, I would like to emphasise the fact that you seized the tide of this challenge by the line and you gave it life. To start with, you approved without agitation official recognition of Yoruba traditional religion and you approved a public holiday to mark it officially.

It is against this background that I humbly wish to remind you that statecraft never stops and true nation-builder never rests because we are constantly facing up to new challenges. My leader, I hasten to declare that the challenges have just begun. As our teacher, we will continue to be at your feet, doing the beats you apportion to us to move humanity further to civilization. We are many in your school of leadership. Leadership that is a responsibility.

First on the list of the challenges is the need to building a political entity which understands the past, present and future of this State with the tendencies of the left. History and practice had shown us that the tendencies of the left are more compatible with our history and culture. Our dialectics favours symbiosis. The secondchallenge taunting us as a race the need to building institutions that will strengthen our preferences as a race in terms of education, culture, economy and general re-orientation.

You cannot be weary at all in the propagation of ‘Omoluabi’ ethos. Our State and country need more sturdy handslike you in the helm of affairs. You cannot rest now!

Since the time of Adam Smith, every serious nationalist and politician has come to know that the wealth of a nation is not based on the wealth and opulence of its rulers, but on the productivity and industry of its citizens. You have encouraged us on this path at every given moment. Just yesterday, many of us witnessed with you the graduands of Ijinle Heritage Academy in Lagos. You sponsored some youths for training in traditional Yoruba dresses that are fast going into extinction. Equally, you created quality time to witness their graduation ceremony. By that you opened to them international routes to prosperity. That had been your haul-mark. That was your usual tendency.

If not, how do I explain how you sent the first batch of over forty youths to Germany for six-month training in Agriculture without any of them being your relation? How do I explain how you sent the second batch to the same training in Germany without any of them being your relation? Ogbeni! How do I explain how you sent the third batch to Germany for the same high-tech training in Agriculture without appeal to nominate any member of your family for such rare opportunities? Your breed is scarce. And your generation should be cloned. You voluntarily descended from all plutocratic principles by electing to stay permanently with the masses. If not, you sponsored about two hundred medical students to Ukraine to study Medicine. At least, two of them broke the national record of intellectualism in the field of Medicine in Ukraine.

Alas! None of them was your relation. That was the first time such altruism was demonstrated by our leaders South of Sahara. You created a new anchor for many youths from indigent homes to glue to life more abundant. You continue to teach us that in today’s world, skills, industry, productivity, and competitiveness are the determinant factors of national greatness. That is the summary of your interventions in our youths. The various foreign investments you have attracted to our State continue to factor in your vision on these youths. We are grateful.

You must not surrender to stress. Obstacles are everywhere. You cannot pass under obstacles. You must jump over them. This must be work-in progress.

Permit me sir to note that the operational environment in our country is challenging. We have the challenge of poverty manifesting in various forms. How do we explain a little slip, particularly as our people accept Greek gifts to compromise our hard-earned democracy? The hunger in the land has always received your surgical knives. Sir, we have the challenge of socio-economic inequalities, the challenge of an appropriate constitutional settlement, the challenge of building institutions for democracy and development; andthe challenge of leadership.

My leader, curiously, some people blame our problem on colonialism. We blame our problems on historical legacies of colonial rule. Unknown to many people, there were few countries on the planet that did not have the influence of European colonizers brought upon them.

There are just only ten countries that were never colonized

by Europeans.They are: Saudi Arabia, Iran, Japan, Thailand, China, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Ethiopia.

Out of these countries, only Japan, China and possibly Iran can boast of development. The rest of the countries not colonized are still poor. Britain was once colonized. The United States of America was once colonized. Yet, they are prosperous. It is a hasty generalization to blame our under-development on colonialism.

Some observers blamed our challenge to military intervention or the incompetence of military men. . If the thesis was true, where do we place the contributions of Ramat Muhammed, Colonel Umar, EbituUkiwe, Dan Suleiman and of course NuhuRibadu? It is a fact of history that the present President Buhariis the first and only Nigerian that got elected again into power, not because of his wealth, but on the account of his integrity.

You had once told us long time ago that the father and grand father of all crimes is poverty reflecting copiously in our socio-economic inequalities. You did not only identified the problem, you rose up stoutly to arrest it. To smoothen the edge of this challenge, as a Governor, you developed social welfare safety nets to establish a baseline of social and economic rights which all members of the community must enjoy to avoid ‘social exclusion’ as far as basic social and economic rights are concerned. We are happy that you have laid the template here and its tide is moving round Nigeria. Part of the tide is the O Meal initiative which is now a national programme. One of it is O YES initiative which gave birth to N-Power programme.

Another is AgbaOsunProgramme which now ttansforms to Conditional Cash Transfer. Your economic inclusion policy that made you to create a viable micro-credit agency in our State is now taken over by our Bank of Industry.

The impact was so intense to the extent that the parliament of Great Britain, our colonizer, had to invite you to address the parliament as a mark of honour for your ingenuity and value-chain of prosperity that your programmes impacted on the people.

How Lover Abandoned Sickle Cell Patient With Two Kids

By Sola Jacobs Bunmi Oyedele’s condition as a Sickle Cell Anemia patient and her parents’ poor living standard has probably placed a huge burden of battling with two kids whose father have disappeared into thin air.

Her love at first sight led her to Tope Ademakinwa, her run-away husband, to whom she has had two kids.

Born and grew up in Abidjan by Nigerian parents who hailed from Ejigbo in Osun state, Bunmi’s father, Pa Lamidi Oyedele who is a farmer hailed from Adeeye compound, while her mother, Temilade, a trader hailed from Ejigbo’s compound also in Ejigbo.

Things took twist in Abidjan for her parents, which forced the family to relocate back home in Nigeria; few months after, Pa Oyedele died and the responsibility of parenting falls on Madam Temilade Oyedele alone.

To make ends meet, Bunmi took the job of a sales girl with a wine shop at Ogo-Oluwa, Osogbo, where she met one Temitope Ademakinwa who promised to be her lover, come rain, come shine, even when he knew her status as sickle cell patient.

According to Bunmi, ”We met in 2004 and we started dating and she invited me to a residence in Akindoyin street, Eleyele area In Ile-Ife. “Temitope told me he was an orphan, but her mum hailed from Ife, while his father is a native of Ondo.

He told me that he attended Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo where he studied English Education and that he had taught in Meritop Educational Consultancy, as well as Success School in Ondo.

“Later, I got pregnant for him, I called and informed him, but he said I should abort it; because of my health status, I declined and since, but then he changed his phone number. When I traced him back to his one room apartment in Ife, I learned that he had not come home a while and other residents said

they did not know his place of work in Ondo”.

According to Mrs Temilade Oyedele’s, Bunmi’s mother, ”when it happened, we both made concerted efforts to locate Tope and any time I called his number, he will not pick the call, till Bunmi gave birth to a Baby girl on August 14th 2015.

“With help of neighbors and family members, her hospital bill was offset, because she gave birth through Caesarian section. Eventually, my petty trade folded up, and I started doing menial jobs to keep her and the baby”, Temilade explained.

Just early this year, surprisingly, Tope called on Bunmi and asked of her welfare. According to Bunmi, “she asked me that I should meet her at her apartment in Ife, that he travelled and lost contacts, I was happy but he said I should not informed my

mummy yet and that I should bring Darasinmi, my daughter for him to see, which I complied with.

“At our meeting in Ife around February, he apologised and promised that our daughter will soon start schooling. I believed him and again he slept with me, and suddenly afterwards, his phone line was not going through again. Later, I found out that I was pregnant again and this time, I could not tell my mum.

I decided to commit suicide, but my sister who has noticed what was happening confided in my mum.

Again, I had broken her heart.

“I took up menial job to support myself with the pregnancy, and frequently because of my health status, I often experienced health crisis”.

At the state hospital, Asubiaro, Matron Olateju and Makinde of Ante-natal clinic said that, Bunmi often attends clinic but with nothing, only that she lives on charity of others until she gave birth.

The nurses took over her feeding and management of her health, with help of some other women, precisely Mrs Yemi Omisore and Mrs Jacobs, who helped raise part of the money to take care of her delivery through Caesarian Section, as the mother had nothing to take care of her and her first daughter.

Eventually, Bunmi gave birth to a baby boy on 3rd of November 2018, but the search still continues as Tope Ademakinwa who fathered the two kids had absconded, but only to put a call through to Bunmi few days ago, but refuse to show up.

Deworming for one year and above: This involves the administration of Abendazole on children above 12 month of age. The list of the dosage is 200 mg which would be given to children between 12 – 23 months while 400 mg of the drug would be given to children between 24 – 59 months.

Family planning services: Lectures and enlightenment on family planning techniques would be taught for free to the couples that make themselves available.

Screening for malnutrition: This is an intervention reserved for children between the ages of 6 months to 5 years.

Reason for this intervention is due to the poor record of

malnutrition observed in day to day activity of children. These children are not well fed with nutritious foods and because of the poor financial situation in the country, most children are fed with carbohydrates due to their cheap to purchase value. Most Nigerian parents feed their children on quantity rather than quality.

The means of measuring malnutrition in children is the use of the MUAC (Mid Upper Arm Circumference) tape.

The MUAC tape is comprised of 3 colours of green, yellow and red. The green colour stands for a well fed child, the yellow stands for moderately fed child while the red colour stands for severely malnourished child. In this

case, the child would be referred from the health facility to a specialist.

Immunization for 0 – 11 months children: Under this intervention, the immunisation would be done in a health facility so as to forestall the possibility of any side effect or reaction to the vaccines. “Allowing them to walk as free men in the society may increase the tendency for others to do similar thing, hence, the need to handle them without levity”, he added.

However, the defence counsel, Mr Adeleke Lukman objected the position of the prosecutor, saying it is not yet time to seek remand for the suspects, saying there is need to allow them prove their innocence.

He sought the court’s mercy to admit the suspects to bail, saying they would not abuse it.

But, the magistrate ordered that the suspects be remanded in prison custody, especially as the court declined jurisdiction on some of the counts leveled against them.

He adjourned the matter till November 22, 2018.

Why The Muddle On Social OBSERVATION Intervention?

A well coordinated anti-poverty strategy has for long been absent in Nigeria. This was accentuated with the advent of the structural adjustment programme in 1985 when the now discarded “Washington Consensus” virtually saw concerted state interventions outside of a skewed definition of a “market based framework” as an anachronism.

Mercifully, this perspective has now been jettisoned. The exemplary success of the social intervention programmes of the government of Ignacio Lula da Silva provided ample evidence that antipoverty programmes could be conducted without dislocating the (prudential) fiscal balance.

Instructively “lula’s” programmes in Brazil successfully raised forty (40) million people out of poverty in eight years. It was an astonishing piece of social engineering.

In spite of continuing economic uncertainties, the present federal government has to be commended for placing an anti-poverty thrust at the heart of its social and economic policies. The two are clearly interwoven. With alarming poverty figures and so many children stubbornly still out of school, it is the sensible course to take. Sadly, as with everything else in a dysfunctional democracy, the absence of a national democratic agreement on these programmes will inevitably drag them into the cesspool of contrived partisan bickering. Providing a position for finetuning is very much in order; however, a clarion call for disbanding the programmes wholesale is unacceptable.

Much more so, since not even the perfunctory outline of an alternative is on offer.

history, which is hardly surprising.

In addition, there is something profoundly disturbing entailed. There is a revelation here of the interpretation of both political economy and the social contract on the part of both the parliamentarians, as well as the merchandisers of ethnic interests, who have not surprisingly jumped into the fray in an election season. The interpretation of the motive is important.

It will appear that government policy should not be in the interest of the overwhelming majority, as opposed to the long established benefits of a select few. It is not uncharitable to bring up

inconvenient propositions. For example, we are not aware of opposition from the same sources to what is in effect subsidies to the well connected through the now ubiquitous Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

Through these pervasive bailouts, sums roughly worth an entire federal government budget have been used to ameliorate what ought to be moral hazards, which ought to have been borne by the defaulting fat cats. The list goes on. Nary a word of dissent has come from these quarters about sweetheart privatisation deals, import duty waivers which, during a better forgotten interregnum, used to be dished out like confetti at a raucous wedding. This attitude reveals alot about an utmost contempt for the rights of the majority.

The opportunity costs of bailouts for a pampered elite is huge. It translates into a crumbling, dilapidated social infrastructure. It clearly affects the security framework through the inducement into existence of a “dangerous class “, a social strata lacking the means, as well as the skills necessary to compete, let alone survive in today’s conditions. It is worth noting that the State of Osun, where many of today’s social intervention programmes had been initially pioneered, also has one of the lowest poverty rates in the country.

Nigeria has always had a problem with the financial inclusiveness necessary to empower the underbanked. This is a way of tackling it. The regional governments in the 1950s and the early ’60s attempted to tackle the lack of access to capital with the establishment of the cooperative banks in the regions. Hitherto, we have always had a problem with the structure of the Anglo-Saxon banking system bequethed by the colonial incursion, with its debilitating emphasis on a short term framework. It was not just a “third world” problem. In the United Kingdom itself, it has been a problem affecting the country’s competitiveness. The effect of the establishment of the cooperative banking model was demonstrably beneficial. It allowed access to capital through cooperatives to small holder farmers and helped those in the burgeoning urban distributive trade.

Sadly the unintended consequences of the Soludo reforms and the emergence of the “mega banks” has disrupted this model.

What we are seeing through “Tradermoney” and other initiatives, is the beginning of a fight back; it should be supported.

It is clear that two roads face us in this country. Either to stick with a political economy based on croynism, which the incomparable Fela Kuti described as “paddy, paddy” government or pursue policies which will be of benefit to the overwhelming majority and their families. The vice president will be derelict in his duties to allow himself to be bullied out of supporting the largest social intervention programme since independence. Imperfect as they are, they must be fine-tuned, deepened and defended.
