Traders Defy Govt's Market Relocation Order

Osun: Preparing For The Future Two significant events took place in the State of Osun this week. Both of them indicates a forward thrust to lay strong foundations in the state. The initiatives are interlocking and in this way a synergy is being created here into a critical mass.

The first initiative is the signing by the Osun Produce Board (OPB) of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke in order to boost commercial agriculture in the state of Osun through advance Technology.

As the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the Osun produce board, Dr Yemi Adegoke pointed out during the signing, “… the MOU is in line with the vision of the present government led by Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola to boost agricultural production and improve the income for all that are involved in the agriculture value chain”.

Very well stated by Dr Adegoke, for it is absolutely critical in the process of modernisation leading to industrialization that there must be an upliftment of the process from subsistence to commercial farming. This is the only way to revitalise a stagnant rural economy and uplift the living standards of farmers. Involving the Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke is also very important.

For the transition to commercial farming must be focused on technology and research which the institution is eminently suited to provide.

Opening Up Rural Areas For Economic Development Since the inception of the Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s administration in the State of Osun, the rural areas in the state have been receiving attention from the government through the Osun Rural Access Mobility Projects (RAMP). SHINA ABUBAKAR reviews some of the projects carried out by the agency so far.

As part of his campaign promises, Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola pledged to open up the rural areas as a means of not just reducing the Rural-Urban drift, but to ensure that farm produce gets to the markets in urban centres and add value to the agricultural sector in line with the administration’s six point Integral Action Plan to banish hunger and poverty, particularly at a time the nation’s economy needed much diversification from the monopoly of oil.

These communities were known to have been cut off from the market as a result of inaccessibility over a long period, forcing many to abandon farming and relocate to other urban areas in the constituency until the recent intervention of the government.

The honour was conferred on him at the 2017 Annual Investiture/Awards Ceremony under the Chairmanship of Aare Afe Babalola, President and Chairman of Council at Eko Hotels and Suite recently.

The President and Chairman of Council, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), welcome dignitaries to the ceremony, while the Keynote Speaker, Honourable Justice Walter Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria made his presentation at the ceremony with the theme - Ethics and Professionalism in Arbitration.

A member of the Caretaker Management Committee, Osogbo South Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in the State of Osun, Bolanle Jimoh Ademuyiwa (A.K.A B.J Gbogbolomo) has emphasized the need for youths to embrace sport, describing it as a viable means to engage them.

Ademuyiwa made this known at the Muslim Middle School, Osogbo, during the December 2017 Football Competition she sponsored for the youth.

She noted that participation of youths in various sporting activities is a strong antidote to youth restiveness, saying “I sponsored the tournament

because of my party APC and to help the youths to discover their talents”.

She therefore advised youths to take active part in sporting activities and avoid hooliganism.

Osun Produce Board Signs MoU With OSCOTECH On Commercial Agriculture

In order to boost commercial agriculture in the State of Osun through advance technology, the State Produce Board (OPB) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke. He maintained that OSCOTECH, Esa Oke and all other stateowned tertiary institutions are blessed with both human and material resources needed to improve farming method, urging the institutions to establish Commercial Farms, Technology, Research and Demonstration Farms and engage in production of Herbs.

He noted that this will make them a leading light capable of competing with other institutions around the World.

He promised that the Produce Board and Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security will give the institutions all necessary technical support needed to execute the content in the MoU, in order to achieve the target result within a limited period.

In his brief remarks,

the College’s Council Chairman, Professor Layi Fagbenle acknowledged that the vision of the government of the State of Osun is a good one and expressed optimism that it will come to reality.

Prof Fagbenle stressed that Nigeria and West Africa sub-region are blessed with fertile agricultural land, good weather and human materials.

He therefore promised that the institution will cue-in and make the vision a reality.

Also speaking, the Acting Rector, Dr Samson Adegoke who described the signing of MoU as a good sign of good thing for the institution, said it is prepared for the task ahead, especially now that it has a department of Agricultural Engineering.

PDP Shamed As Aregbesola Vindicated - APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the more the People’s Democratic Party struggle to demonise, scandalise and repudiate the person, the policy and the government run by the APC leader in the state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the more acknowledgement, praise and recognition he gets from home and abroad.

This was contained through a statement by the party’s Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Barrister Kunle Oyatomi.

The party said the irony was that Aregbesola is being singled out for those things he has done which the PDP and other critics vehemently deny its existence.

It added that the constant and consistent refrain of the opposition elements in the state is, on the one hand, that Aregbesola has done nothing whatsoever to improve lives, and on the other hand, they shamelessly threaten to either stop, demolish or suspend every project which is supposedly too “sophisticated” for the people of Osun.

“In their hopelessly flawed judgement and pathetic ignorance, they claimed that the

State of Osun has been in its “worst” form since the Aregbesolaled APC government came to power in the state seven years ago.

“However, only last Thursday, Yoruba professionals, home and abroad, declared that in their p r o f e s s i o n a l judgement, and with the facts on ground available to them for assessment, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola was the “best” performing governor (within the Yoruba area, presumably) for the year 2017.

“This should make the PDP bury its head in shame because the group of people, who are talking, are not simpletons like most of Aregbesola’s critics, but professionals with stable minds, depth of scholarship and a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to adjudge a

governor the “best” amongst his colleagues”, the APC said.

The Party said it was not surprised that the PDP has been quiet since this Award was made public because it (PDP) knew what further damage their negative comment would do to their already rotten image as liars, falsifiers of data and people in denial of what stares at them glaringly in the face.

According to the Party, “those who so irrationally condemn Aregbesola may not simply be ignorant, they may actually be intellectually impaired; which is why their situation appears pathetic.

“Anybody who has not read the reasons the Yoruba Professionals gave for awarding the “Best Governor of Year 2017” to Aregbesola will do himself or herself a lot of good to do so and those who already have, may take a second look at it.

“It was not a sentimental exercise” the APC claimed, arguing that, “the group had a goal in

mind to award excellence to who its due, after vigorous assessment of the empirical evidence on ground.

People can easily change the government. It is therefore, specially suitable to meet emergencies. In special circumstances, a smooth change of leadership is possible without bloody revolution.

Bagehot, an English political philosopher, highly praised parliamentary government, because people in this system can “choose a ruler for the occasion” who may be specially qualified to tackle the situation. At the time of the Second World war Chamberlain was replaced by Churchill without any political upheaval in England.

Another advantage of the parliamentary form of government is that it can claim high educative value. It cannot function without well organised political parties. Political parties formulate, organise and educate public opinion.

All this makes the people politically conscious and vigilant. Parliamentary government is also a government by criticism. The opposition criticizes the government and brings the government on the proper track in cases if it is getting off the track.

Lastly, the merit of parliamentary government is its achievement of a close union between lawmaking and administration. Since ministers are members of the legislature as well as the political heads of administrative departments, administrative considerations are not likely to be overlooked in the enactment of laws.

At the same time, the top executives, in approaching the administrative problems of the governments, are mindful of the legislative point of view. On the other hand, formation in the possession of administrative agencies is always available to the legislative branch in the discharge of its policy determining functions.

A major criticism of Parliamentary system

is on centralisation and lack of separation of powers. Some people, however, regard this as a strength, calling it ‘strong government’.

Expert Cautions Against Over Exposure

Due to the haze experienced in some parts of the country in the early days of January, 2018, an expert in the field of health care has counselled the parents to take precautionary steps to prevent a breakdown in their immune system and that of their kids.

This advice was given on Tuesday by Dr. Mootemi Abraham, in a one on one chat with this medium in Osogbo.

Mootemi contended that the reason for this caution was that the haze which to the ordinary eye may be harmless are a combination of various harmful organisms which on entering the human body will use it as a suitable host and ultimately attack the body’s immune system.

“You know the weather is dry. So most of these organisms are in a dormant mode but when they get a moist habitation preferably a human host, they tend to become active and it becomes easy to be transferred from one human to the other due to our unhealthy hygiene methods.

“As a result, colds, flu or influenza, cough, catarrh, runny nose, red eyes, beaches, body pains will be the order of the day.

“When an individual experiences the cough intermittently for two weeks without abating after using the prescribed set of drugs, then that person should report to the nearest health facility for tests to be carried out, it may not be ordinary again. It may be early stage Tuberculosis”.

He advised that parents should ensure that they bath their children with warm water, wear them with warm dresses, moisten their noses and make them to drink lots of water.

Ajayi who was employed by Ya-Sallam Group, a Vigilante group, was deployed to work at the shopping complex where he committed the offence.

He was reported by the police to have been arrested while on his way home at about 06:00am on the said day after his night duty.

The convict pleaded guilty to the two-count charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the convict, Mr Kunle Ayenoyin, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing the convict.

The Presiding Magistrate then ordered the imprisonment of the convict for six months due to the magnitude of the offence committed, with an option of #10,000 fine.
