Fadahunsi Allegedly Confronts Owa Obokun At Peace Meeting Shola Aderinto ENSION flared at a peace mee ng in Ijesaland as Senator Adenigba Fadahunsi openly challenged the Owa Obokun Adimula, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, and asked the monarch to correct his impression of him. The mee ng was convened by the Owa to reconcile poli cal leaders a er the violence that trailed the just concluded governorship elecon in the state. Leaders of the ADC, Accord and APC in Ijesaland, security chiefs, and Ijesa elites were in a endance. Oba Haastrup used the opportunity to preach unity ahead of 2027. He expressed sympathy for families who lost loved ones, said he had warned against violence five months before the elec on, and declared that he bore no grudge against anyone. The monarch added that he was willing to overlook an alleged personal affront from Senator Fadahunsi and urged

The Alase of Ilase, Oba Isiaka Adesina Ajarabiolu, said poli cians must show respect to the Owa Obokun and other royal fathers. The Ogboni of Ipole, Oba Omokehinde Oyeleye, condemned poli cal killings and demanded jus ce for vic ms. Representa ves of the Accord Party, Hon. However, the mood changed when Senator Fadahunsi took the floor. He said he was dissatisfied with the proceedings and directly told the Owa Obokun to correct his no on about him. HE Independent Na onal Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday presented Cer ficates of Return to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and his deputy, Kola Adewusi, formally confirming their re-elec on for another four-year term. The presenta on took place at the INEC office in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, with INEC Naonal Commissioner supervising the state, Prof. Kunle Ajayi, presen ng the cer ficates to the governor and his deputy. Adeleke was reelected in the August 15 governorship elecon a er securing 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 444,815 votes. The ADC candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes. Speaking a er receiving his cer ficate, Adeleke thanked INEC and the security agencies for what he described as their roles in the conduct of the elec on. He also commended President Bola Tinubu for

allowing democracy to thrive and wished him success ahead of the 2027 general elec ons. The governor extended an olive branch to his opponents, urging those who contested against him to join hands with his administra on in moving Osun State forward. “Osun is bigger than anyone,” Adeleke said, while calling for unity following the keenly contested elec on. Adeleke also acknowl-

edged those who lost their lives during the elec on and pledged scholarships for their children. He said he had forgiven those who offended him during the campaign and urged his supporters to do the same. The cer ficate presenta on was witnessed by members and supporters of the Accord Party as the governor and his deputy prepare to commence a fresh four-year tenure.

Davido Reiterates Claim APC Spent Over N100bn To Influence Osun Election Ibrahim Abdullahi FROBEATS superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has renewed his allega on that the All Progressives Congress (APC) deployed more than N100 billion in an a empt to influence the outcome of the recently concluded Osun State governorship elec on. Davido made the fresh claim during a live broadcast, where he spoke extensively about the poli cal developments surrounding the August 15 governorship elec on. According to the singer, previous es mates of the amount allegedly spent during the elec on were understated, insisting that the actual figure was significantly higher.

A

The claim comes amid renewed controversy over allega ons of vote-buying, voter inducement and the use of financial resources to influence voters during the elec on. Davido had been acvely involved in the Osun elec on campaign, openly suppor ng his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, who contested for a second term on the pla orm of the Peoples Democra c Party (PDP). The singer’s involvement in the elec on had already a racted significant a en on, with Davido using his social media pla orms to comment on developments before, during and a er the poll. His latest comments have further intensified the poli cal conversa on

Prophet Eniola-Oni’s Prediction Comes To Pass As Governor Adeleke Wins Re-Election •Cleric Urges Governor To Justify People’s Mandate Israel Oladele ENOWNED Chrisan cleric prophet Solomon EniolaOni has congratulated the Execu ve Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke on his re-elec on in the governorship poll held on Saturday, August 15, 2026. In a statement issued in Osogbo, Prophet Eniola-Oni recalled that he had earlier warned against external interference in the elec on and prophesied that Governor Adeleke would emerge victorious. He also predicted that the Accord Party

R

would win convincingly in 18 out of the 30 Local Government Areas of the state. “The result of the elec on has affirmed the will of the people of Osun State. What the Lord revealed has come to pass. I congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke on this decisive victory,” the cleric said. Prophet Eniola-Oni, who is known for the accuracy of his past prophecies, further reminded the Governor of his earlier revela on that he would join the All Progressives Congress (APC) shortly a er winning, and

that he saw him serving in the presidency in the future, though he did not specify the capacity. The man of God therefore advised the Governor to see his reelec on as a sacred trust and to jus fy the confidence reposed in him by the electorate. “I urge His Excellency to deepen good governance, priori ze the welfare of workers, youth empowerment, infrastructure development, and social jus ce. The people have given you their mandate again, and they expect results that will touch lives directly,”

he stated. Prophet Eniola-Oni also reiterated his earlier revela on concerning David Adeleke, popularly called Davido, that he will soon contest and win the House of Representa ves seat for Ede South/Ede North/Ejigbo/ Egbedore Federal Cons tuency. He prayed for divine wisdom, strength, and guidance for Governor Adeleke as he pilots the affairs of Osun State in his second term, and called on all stakeholders to support the administra on for the progress of the state.

surrounding the elec on, par cularly allega ons concerning the role of money and poli cal machinery in determining electoral outcomes. The issue of votebuying was also raised by elec on observers during the poll. Reports from elec on-monitoring organisa ons documented instances of alleged voter inducement and other electoral irregularies across several polling units. However, the specific allega on that the APC alone spent more than N100 billion has not been independently verified. The figure remains an allega on made by Davido and should not be treated as an established fact without suppor ng evidence from relevant authori es, elec on observers or other credible independent sources. The Osun governorship elec on was ul mately won by Governor Ademola Adeleke, who was declared the winner by the Independent Naonal Electoral Commission (INEC). The APC has yet to publicly substan ate or independently confirm Davido’s latest allega on in the context of the N100 billion figure. Davido’s interven on is expected to generate further poli cal reac ons, par cularly as discussions con nue over the conduct of the Osun elec on and what the poll could mean for Nigeria’s wider poli cal landscape ahead of the 2027 general elec ons.

HAT happens next a er a tumultuous elec on is now more than important. People such as former Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola deserve kudos for their statesman like in acknowledging the victory of the winner. Aregbesola in his statement urged Adeleke to see his re-elec on as “a renewed mandate to unite the state, deepen development and govern with fairness, humility and a strong sense of responsibility to every ci zen, irrespec ve of poli cal affilia on”. Osun 2026: What Adeleke’s Victory Really Means For Nigeria’s 2027 Ilupeju Oluwasegun

hy Adeleke’s Victory Ma ers Beyond Osun Osun has delivered a result that deserves to be examined beyond the boundaries of the state. Ademola Adeleke’s victory is significant not simply because an incumbent governor has secured a second term, but because he has done so at a moment when the poli cal map of Nigeria is increasingly dominated by the All Progressives Congress. I write this as someone who supported Ademola Adeleke. That perspec ve deserves to be disclosed, but poli cal support should not remove the obliga on to interrogate the result honestly. If Adeleke’s victory is to mean anything beyond another electoral cycle, his supporters must be willing to examine both what produced it and what his second term must deliver. What the Numbers Actually Showed A margin of 66,252 votes represents a substan al electoral advantage. Adeleke won 511,067 votes against Oyebamiji’s 444,815. Adeleke won 19 of Osun’s 30 LGAs including Osogbo, Ede North, Ede South and Iwo. Najeem Salam’s 17,180 votes also deserve a en on. The rela-

•Adeleke vely small share secured by the ADC candidate suggests that the presence of a third major contender did not fundamentally alter the contest between Adeleke and the APC. The result suggests that performance, personal poli cal iden ty and local poli cal networks may have ma ered more to the people of Osun than poli cal alignment. The 98.35 percent IReV upload rate is also historically notable. In previous Nigerian off-cycle elec ons, IReV uploading has been inconsistent and subject to manipula on. The high level of result uploads on IReV provided an important layer of public visibility into the colla on process. While digital result transmission does not by itself guarantee electoral integrity, the availability of polling-unit results for public scru ny strengthens the ability of ci zens, journalists and party agents to independently follow the process. Osun 2026 may serve as a model for what transparent off-cycle elecons can look like when civil society, party agents,

and ordinary voters are sufficiently vigilant. A New Playbook — How Adeleke Is Changing the Game The Accord Party campaign made several smart structural decisions. One of the most consequen al features of the campaign was Adeleke’s ability to retain much of the poli cal network including Osun PDP and personal support that had helped him build his 2022 coali on, despite contes ng the 2026 elec on on the Accord pla orm. Second, Davido’s appointment as Head of Youth Mobilisa on was more than symbolic. His visibility and social media pressure gave the campaign an unusual level of cultural reach, parcularly among younger audiences in a way no conven onal poli cian could. Adeleke himself commissioned roads, flyovers, boreholes, improved the healthcare sector. He also cleared salary arrears of workers that his APC predecessors had le behind. While some cri cs perceive these projects as unmeaningful, these projects were

precisely what built the loyalty of ci zens of Osun State. Ademola Adeleke’s Second-Term Test A second-term mandate carries a different weight than a first. The second term is about scaling delivery and addressing the gaps that remained. The Imole Youth Corps was a genuine programme but is not transforma ve at scale for a state with Osun’s youth unemployment reality. The first term demonstrated poli cal recogni on of the youth ques on. The second term must demonstrate economic solu ons to it. The second term needs a more ambious, skills-focused youth employment framework. The goal should be pathways to sustainable employment, not simply temporary s pends. The youths need tech training, crea ve industry support, voca onal cerfica on linked to actual job placement, technology hub, film and photography produc on. Adeleke’s personal connec on to enter-

therefore not be interpreted as a permanent realignment of Nigerian poli cs. It should instead be understood as a warning against poli cal complacency. Adeleke’s second term provides an opportunity to demonstrate how governance, communica on, culture and ci zen engagement can work together in a modern Nigerian state. For opposi on par es, Osun offers a lesson in the power of candidate credibility and local poli cal iden ty. For the APC, it is a reminder that na onal poli cal dominance does not automa cally translate into victory in every state. For Nigerian voters, it is another reminder that elec ons remain contests between people, par es, records, narra ves and expecta ons. And as Nigeria moves towards 2027, perhaps the most important ques on is no longer simply who controls the poli cal structure. It is who can convince Nigerians that their poli cs can deliver something worth believing in.

The decision was taken at the Council’s 66th Regular Mee ng on August 13, 2026. The new term will run from December 1, 2026 to November 30, 2030. According to the Council, the reappointment recognizes Mr. Adenekan’s contribu ons to the University’s growth, administra ve reforms, and overall development over his first

He should use it deliberately to build Osun’s crea ve and entertainment sector as an actual economic driver. 350km of roads and three flyovers is a genuine achievement but the quality of maintenance must match the ambi on of construc on. The second term must establish a maintenance funding mechanism and not just a construc on pipeline. What This Elec on Means for Nigerian Democracy Osun 2026 will be studied, not because Adeleke won but because of how he won. OSUN 2026: AREGBESOLA CONGRATULATES ADELEKE, SALUTES ADC MEMBERS FOR COURAGE, AND THE PEOPLE OF OSUN FOR POLITICAL SOPHISTICATION. I congratulate Senator Ademola Adeleke on his re-election as the Governor of Osun following the governorship election held on Saturday, August 15, 2026. Elections are moments when citizens exercise their sovereign right to choose who they wish to entrust with the responsibility of governing them. Now that the people of Osun have spoken through the ballot, their decision must be respected. I therefore extend my best wishes to Governor Adeleke as he prepares to commence another term in office. The task before the governor is now greater than the contest that has just ended. I urge him to see the outcome as a renewed mandate to unite the state, deepen development and govern with fairness, humility and a strong sense of responsibility to every citizen, irrespective of political affiliation. I also commend the people of Osun for their participation in the democratic process and political sophistication. I must also appeal to all political actors, supporters and citizens to allow the state to move forward in peace and unity. To the men and women of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Osun, I say: thank you. I am particularly proud of your steadfastness, courage and commitment throughout this journey. You stood firm, worked tirelessly and remained committed to the ideals that brought us together, even in the face of enormous political pressure and an intensely competitive electoral environment. Most importantly, I salute you for standing solidly with our candidate, Dr Najeem Folasayo Salaam (IWALOYE). Your loyalty to the candidate and the cause was demonstrated not merely in words, but also through months of sacrifice, mobilisation, advocacy and peaceful participation in the democratic process. Dr. Salaam has conducted himself with dignity throughout this contest. His campaign represented our tradition and conviction that politics should be about ideas, competence, character and service to the people. I commend him for the maturity with which he has received the outcome of the election and for putting the peace and unity of Osun above personal ambition.

Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove: Nigeria’s Living Research Laboratory For Science, Culture And Sustainable Development By Babawale Israel Olusesan and Olajide Adeola Kikelomo OR decades, the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove has been celebrated as one of Africa’s most important sacred forests and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To many visitors, it is a place of spirituality, pilgrimage, culture and tourism. However, beyond its religious significance lies another remarkable iden ty that deserves na onal and interna onal recogni on: the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove is one of Nigeria’s greatest living research ins tu ons. Unlike conven onal research centres enclosed within laboratories and university campuses, the Grove is an open-air scien fic laboratory where nature, culture, history and indigenous knowledge coexist. Every year, researchers from Nigerian universi es and interna onal ins tuons visit the Grove to conduct studies that contribute to scien fic discoveries, cultural preserva on and environmental sustainability. The Grove demonstrates that tradional heritage sites can serve as modern centres of knowledge produc on while maintaining their sacred values. A Centre for Biodiversity Research One of the Grove’s greatest scien fic values is its extraordinary biodiversity. Surveys conducted over the years have revealed hundreds of plant species, many possessing medicinal properes that have been used in tradi onal healthcare for genera ons. These plants con nue to a ract botanists, pharmacologists, conserva on biologists and ethnobotanists seeking new knowledge about natural medicine and biodiversity conserva on. The forest also provides a living gene bank where indigenous tree species con nue to thrive under natural ecological condi ons. As deforesta on threatens many tropical forests across Africa, the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove remains one of the few protected ecosystems preserving na ve flora and fauna. A Living Botanical Garden Unlike an ar ficially established botanical garden, the Grove represents a naturally preserved botanical collec on. Every tree, shrub and medicinal plant contributes to scien fic understanding of tropical ecology, climate resilience and ecosystem services. Students of botany frequently visit the Grove to iden fy indigenous species, study plant morphology, examine medicinal applica ons and understand ecological interac ons that cannot easily be replicated elsewhere. This makes the Grove an invaluable outdoor classroom for biological sciences. An Environmental Research Centre Environmental scien sts consider the Grove a model ecosystem for studying climate change adapta on, carbon sequestra on, forest regenera on and biodiversity conserva on. The dense forest regulates local climate, protects soil from erosion, conserves water resources and serves as an important carbon sink. Researchers con nue to examine how indigenous conserva on prac ces have successfully protected this ecosystem for centuries, offering valuable lessons for modern environmental management.

F

At a me when climate change poses serious global challenges, the Grove provides prac cal evidence that tradi onal conserva on systems remain highly relevant. A Natural Laboratory for Aqua c Research The sacred Osun River flowing through the Grove supports diverse aqua c life and provides opportunies for research in freshwater ecology, hydrology, fisheries biology and water quality management. Scien sts inves gate aqua c organisms, river ecology, seasonal water varia ons and ecosystem health while studying the interac on between forest conserva on and freshwater sustainability. These studies contribute significantly to understanding Nigeria’s freshwater ecosystems. A Sanctuary for Wildlife Research The Grove shelters numerous wildlife species including monkeys, birds, rep les, insects and other forest animals. Wildlife researchers regularly conduct ecological surveys, behavioural observa ons and biodiversity assessments within the forest. The coexistence between humans and wildlife under tradional conserva on prac ces presents a unique model for conserva on biology and sustainable wildlife management. Long-term monitoring of these species contributes to na onal conservaon policies. A Centre for Architectural and Conserva on Research The Grove also serves as an outstanding laboratory for architecture and heritage conserva on. Researchers study tradi onal Yoruba architecture, sacred shrines, sculptural monuments, ancient construc on techniques and conserva on methods developed by both indigenous cra smen and renowned ar st Susanne Wenger. These studies provide valuable

knowledge for architects, conserva on professionals, historians and museum specialists interested in preserving cultural heritage using sustainable materials and tradi onal building technologies. A Living Museum of Cultural Research Anthropologists, historians, archaeologists and sociologists have long recognised the Grove as one of Africa’s richest centres for cultural research. The annual Osun-Osogbo Fes val, tradi onal governance systems, oral tradi ons, rituals, indigenous laws and ar s c expressions provide endless opportuni es for academic research. Each shrine, pathway and monument tells stories that deepen our understanding of Yoruba civilisa on and African cultural iden ty. A Centre for Religious and Indigenous Knowledge Research Religious scholars from different parts of the world visit the Grove to study Yoruba tradi onal religion, sacred ecology, pilgrimage prac ces and indigenous belief systems. The Grove demonstrates how spirituality has historically contributed to environmental conserva on. The belief that the forest is sacred has protected it from indiscriminate exploita on for centuries. This rela onship between faith and conserva on con nues to a ract researchers interested in indigenous environmental ethics. An Interna onal Classroom Every year, universi es, research ins tutes, museum professionals, conserva on experts, students and internaonal visitors conduct fieldwork within the Grove. Disciplines represented include: Architecture Environmental Science Forestry Botany Zoology Ecology

Aqua c Biology Anthropology Archaeology Sociology Religious Studies Museum Studies Heritage Conserva on Tourism Studies Climate Science Geography Pharmacognosy Ethnobotany Few heritage sites in Africa provide such a mul disciplinary research environment. Why Nigeria Must Invest More Despite its global recogni on, the research poten al of the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove remains underu lised. Establishing a dedicated Research and Documenta on Centre within the Grove would strengthen collabora on among universi es, research ins tutes and interna onal conserva on organisaons. Such a centre would facilitate biodiversity monitoring, climate studies, digital documenta on, conserva on science, ethnobotanical research and heritage management while crea ng opportunies for innova on, educa on and sustainable tourism. Government agencies, universi es, development partners and private organisa ons should recognise the Grove not only as a cultural treasure but also as a na onal scien fic asset deserving increased investment. Conclusion The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove is far more than a sacred forest or tourist des na on. It is a living research laboratory where science, culture, history, ecology and spirituality converge. Its forests preserve biodiversity; its river supports aqua c research; its monuments inspire architectural studies; its tradi ons enrich cultural scholarship; and its sacred landscape demonstrates how indigenous knowledge can contribute to global solu ons for biodiversity conserva on and climate resilience. Recognising the Grove as a mul disciplinary research ins tu on will not diminish its sacred significance. Rather, it will reinforce its role as one of Africa’s greatest centres of knowledge, where ancient wisdom con nues to inspire modern science. As Nigeria seeks pathways toward sustainable development, environmental protec on and scien fic innova on, the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove stands as a compelling reminder that some of the world’s greatest research ins tuons are not built solely with concrete and steel—they are nurtured by nature, protected by culture and sustained by genera ons of custodians commi ed to preserving humanity’s shared heritage. •Babawale Israel Olusesan and Olajide Adeola Kikelomo Department of Monument and Site, National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), Osogbo

News Aftermath Of Osun Guber Poll: Oyetola Risks Being Sanctioned Michael Bamigbola

A

LL appears not to be well with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State a er the party lost the last Saturday’s governorship elecon in Osun State. The party, according to findings is already enmeshed in serious internal wranglings as many stakeholders of the party blamed the former Governor of the state and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Gbogega Oyetola for the loss of the party. The governorship candidate of the party, Mr Bola Oyebamiji lost to Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party in the elec on. Few days a er the elecon, the party appears not to have regained its stand as members con nue to trade blame over the party’s loss in the elec on. Already,a group under the auspices of Osun APC Stakeholders Forum has blamed Oyetola for the party’s defeat in the elecon. The group made the allega on in an open le er dated August 18, 2026, addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In the le er signed by Professor Akin Adeyanju, Coordinator, and Honourable Sola Ajayi, Secretary,

the forum, which described itself as a pressure group within the APC commended President Tinubu for his leadership and commitment before and a er the elec on. It, however, expressed regret over the party’s loss despite what it described as the President’s unwavering support for the party’s success. “We respec ully submit that the principal reason for our defeat was the conduct of the immediate past governor of the state and Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola,” the group said. According to the forum, Oyetola “appointed cronies, allies and kinsmen

to federal poli cal posions and single-handedly selected all candidates for elec ve office in the state,” disregarding the advice and counsel of party elders who urged him to carry other cri cal stakeholders along. Poli cs The group listed 26 federal poli cal appointees whom it alleged were “cornered by Oyetola’s hometown and camp.” Those listed include Oyetola himself; Kabiyesi Abdulrasheed Olabomi, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta; Bola Oyebamiji, Managing Director, NIWA and governorship candidate; Benjamin

Adere , Deputy Governorship Candidate; Dayo Babaran , Execu ve Director, Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corpora on; Fatai Adeyemi, Execu ve Director (Opera ons), NIMASA; and Adeniran Aderogba, CEO, Regional Mari me Development Bank. Others are Lekan Badmus, Execu ve Director (Opera ons), NPA; Charles Akindiji, Managing Director, SWDC; Ayo Omidiran, Chairman, Federal Character Commission; Nike Omoworare, Commissioner, SWDC/Member, Governing Council; Dayo Eluyemi, Federal Commissioner, FCC; Segun Fanibe, Member, Governing Council; Ro mi Makinde, Chairman, Governing Council; and Remi Omowaiye, Execu ve Director, FHA. The list also includes Kayode Sowade, Execu ve Director, OORBDA; Taiwo Olaiya, Chairman, Governing Council; Amidu Tadese, Federal Commissioner, NPC; Oladele Gboyega, Federal Commissioner, RMAFC; Festus Olowogboyega, Federal Commissioner, CSC; Obawale Adebisi, Chairman, Governing Council; Taiwo Oluga, Commissioner, NASC; Bosun Oyin loye, Member, Governing Council; Sunday Akere, Osun Renewed Hope Ambassadors; 31 LGA Renewed Hope Am-

bassadors; and 332 Ward Renewed Hope Ambassadors. The stakeholders also accused Oyetola of singlehandedly nomina ng the governorship candidate, deputy governorship candidate, three senatorial candidates, nine House of Representa ves candidates and 26 House of Assembly candidates. “We believe this pattern of exclusion le the party’s base disengaged and cost us the support of cri cal stakeholders and communi es across the state’s three senatorial districts, contribu ng directly to our defeat on August 15,” the group said. The forum urged President Tinubu to direct an immediate, independent review of the Osun State chapter’s leadership structure and candidate-selecon process ahead of future elec ons. It also called for a reconciliatory mee ng involving Oyetola, party elders and all aggrieved stakeholders in the state under the supervision of the Naonal Working Commi ee. The group further urged the President to restore fairness in federal appointments from Osun State, saying representa on should reflect the breadth of the party’s membership rather than one camp.

It also demanded the cons tu on of a fact-finding commi ee to formally review the conduct of the primaries and concerns raised by party elders before the next elec on cycle. On the way forward, the forum proposed a state congress convened by the Na onal Working Commi ee to recons tute a genuine representa ves of Osun APC execu ves. It also called for a stakeholders’ reconcila on summit bringing together all fac ons, elders and interest groups within the state chapter. The group proposed a transparent and inclusive framework for future candidates selec on based on broader consulta on rather than the preference of any single leader. It further called for deliberate inclusion of federal appointments and future candidacies across the different senatorial districts and interest groups in the state, rather than concentra ng them in one camp. “We are confident that with Your Excellency’s mely interven on, our party can reunite its ranks in Osun State, rebuild the trust of our members, and return stronger and be er posi oned ahead of the next elec on cycle,” the forum said.

ESPITE the despera on of the ruling party to in midate voters, the people of Osun organised themselves formidably to defend their votes. To me, that is perhaps the most important lesson from the governorship elec on. If voters can organise themselves, resist in mida on and vote according to their convic ons, as we witnessed in Osun, there is hope that this courage can be replicated across the country in the 2027 elec ons. Osun voters have inspired other Nigerians to understand that they can peacefully defend their votes. They have demonstrated that their voices count and that, when ci zens stand firm, the ballot can prevail over inmida on. In a democracy, power resides with the people, and Osun voters have sent that message resoundingly. Let us not, however, overlook the hidden dangers and loopholes that must be addressed if the 2027 elecons are to reflect the genuine will of Nigerians. The lesson from Osun is not merely that votes can count; it is that every ins tu on entrusted with protec ng those votes must understand that its loyalty is to the Cons tu on and the Nigerian people, not to the government or poli cal party of the day. INEC must therefore resist every a empt to compromise its independence or manipulate the electoral process. Elec ons must be conducted transparently, results must be transmi ed and declared in accordance with the law, and the Commission must ensure that administra ve failures, technological excuses or deliberate obstruc on are never allowed to undermine the choices freely made by Nigerians. The security agencies must equally remember that elec ons are civil exercises, not military opera ons. Their responsibility is to protect voters, electoral officials and materials — not to in midate ci zens or provide poli cal advantage to the ruling party. The instruments of the Nigerian state belong to Nigerians and must never be converted into instruments of par san coercion. Beyond INEC and the security agencies, the judiciary must recognise the enormous responsibility history has placed on its shoulders.

“If voters can organise themselves, resist intimidation and vote according to their convictions, as we witnessed in Osun, there is hope that this courage can be replicated across the country in the 2027 elections”

Election And Toxic Politics

can be overturned, manufactured or predetermined through poli cal influence over the courts, public confidence in both democracy and the rule of law is imperilled. Judges must therefore defend their independence with courage and resist every a empt at in mida on, inducement or interference. The judiciary must not allow itself to be used to destroy the very democracy it is cons tu onally entrusted to protect. Ul mately, however, the greatest responsibility rests with the Nigerian people. Osun has demonstrated that when ci zens are determined, organised and peaceful, in midaon can be resisted and poli cal power can be compelled to respect the popular will. That spirit must now travel beyond Osun. As we approach 2027, Nigerians must understand that democracy cannot be defended by poli cians alone. It will be defended by ci zens who insist that their votes count, demand that public ins tu ons obey the law and refuse to surrender their sovereign right to choose those who govern them. Osun has shown what is possible when the people refuse to be in midated. The message from Osun is therefore bigger than the outcome of one elec on: the power of the people can s ll be greater than the power of the state when ci zens are united in defence of their democra c rights. That is the lesson we must carry into 2027.

LECTIONS are integral component of democracy. While best legal brains are nominated, confirmed and appointed to leadership posi ons in the judiciary at local, state and federal levels, the legislatures and execu ves must be periodically elected by the consent of the majority adult populaon in a democracy. Democracy is not all about elec ons Democracy packs a lot, including separaons of powers among the judiciary, execu ve and legislature; poli cal party forma ons; internal party democra c processes; poli cal campaigns; equality of ci zens and the rule of law; presump on of innocence, free hearing and trial; the freedom of the press and fundamental human rights of ci zens; and so on. However, elec on into public offices is a fundamental necessity of democracy, and is usually, for good reasons, more a ended to than other issues; perhaps because once the people in public offices do not get their mandate through the consent of the people, all other cri cal expecta ons are mortgaged ab ini o. Democra c governance is about popular par cipa on in how the people are governed, in their best interest. It is assumed,

therefore, that those who seek to enter polics and get into public offices – elected or appointed – should be keen to listen to the people, fathom their yearnings and aspiraons, and ready to serve to deliver dividends that meet those yearnings and aspira ons. In Nigeria, it has turned out largely, except for a few excep ons in personality and places, to be a sadly wrong assump on. Public offices are sought, desperately and violently, for all sorts of reasons except for the public good to the extent that a former president declared elec ons as a do-or-die affair! How, for the sake of God, can any man/woman wish to be er the lots of his/her community and people so desperately as to not mind killing and maiming as many persons as he/she perceives as standing in the way? There are unnumbered unresolved cases of high profile poli cal assassina ons and brigandage, the most lamentable and painfully ironic being the killing of a si ng Minister of Jus ce and A orney General of the Federa on! Not to men on death and maiming of many “unknown civilians” and loss of proper es in nameless billions of naira. The late President Muhammadu Buhari was quoted in a television interview to have

said he will keep the iden ty of his preferred successor close to his chest as he does not want him/her to be eliminated before his/ her me. What a damning indictment to a deadly poli cs and dispiri ng pointers to the fact that our elites and poli cians have not learnt much either from the past, or of democracy itself. The terrible hangover of protracted military rule – brutal and authoritarian – and the history of monarchy and colonialism combined s ll weigh heavily on their mentality. With the unprecedented level of insecurity in the na on, it is no me to add poli cal and electoral violence, which are alien to true democracy. Of course, Fela has characterised ours as demon-crazy (demonstra on of craze) with all the toxic meaning anyone is free to read into that. However, me is now for the youth and women, who are the majority players in poli cs, to have a rethink on the role imposed on them and redefine their own place, goals and ac ons by themselves. Such paradigm shi and ac ons are the only hope for a new “poli cs without bitterness” where elec ons will not be “a door-die affair,” and there will be no fear for an incumbent Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces men oning a preferred successor for fear of him/her being eliminated before his/her me.
