That the country currently shells humongous amounts to service debts is beyond dispute. A more telling illustration of the crisis is the N1.663 trillion allocated to debt service in the 2017 budget, representing a whopping

Filtering is the good news that the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), jointly owned by the governments of Osun and Oyo state have resumed after a protracted strike action embarked on by the workers of the university.

Earlier in June 2017, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in LAUTECH announced the commencement of an indefinite strike, three months after the suspension of an 8-month industrial action earlier embarked upon by the union.

According to the statement by the ASUU Chairperson, Biodun Olaniran, and the Secretary Toyin Abegunrin, the strike became inevitable since the two governments of Oyo and Osun

It would be recalled that the ProChancellor and the Chairman of the council, Professor Afolabi had shortly after his appointment assured that the institution would soon reopen for normal academic activities, saying, the new council was closer to finding a lasting solution to the problems confronting the institution, just as he expressed the council’s readiness to restore the lost hope in the institution.

While admitting that the new council was inaugurated at the most trying time, Afolabi said they have accepted the challenges and are ready to ensure that all the issues in contention are resolved.

“We are optimistic of early resolution to the crises rocking LAUTECH; government is committed to bringing back a formidable university, council and management are also determined to ensure an enduring legacy. In about 15 or 20 days, we should be able to give you the resumption date.”

Afolabi also promised to ensure that the institution becomes self-sustaining and not be a burden to the owner state governors.

Community policing is anchored on a systematic relationship between the police and the entire citizenry. It is a proactive philosophy that promotes solving problems that are either criminal in nature which can affect the quality of life, or increase citizens’ fear of crime. A problemsolving policing that is proactive with the community as the cornerstone of policing objective needs to be introduced.

Although community policing is not a new phenomenon in Nigeria, the Nigeria Police in 2004 embraced community policing as a pragmatic approach to police reforms but the question is how effective is it?

A sincere and effective community policing requires successful implementation of these essential and complementary components or operational strategies like:

By simply organising unit based workshops in each local government of the state. Through this, all what the civilians are supposed to know on security matters would be drummed to their ears.

In Nigeria of today, security consciousness is everybody’s business. To every school, religious houses, markets, shopping complexes, hotels, restaurants and sporting arenas, issue of security and personal safety should be taken more seriously these days by working with both the government and security agencies in promptly reporting any person with suspicious activities or unusual gatherings that may compromise security. Now is the time for everybody irrespective of their status in the society to wake up to the challenge. Any delay could be dangerous, procrastination, they say, is the thief of time.

All Progressives Congress in the State of Osun for the umpteenth time berated the opposition, PDP over the recent celebrated scholarship scheme doled out to 60 indigent students in the senatorial zone saying the party would never meet the achievements of the ruling party in the zone.

In a statement signed by the Director of Publicity, Research Strategy, Kunle Oyatomi, the party emphasised that the people need to know what is at stake for their future.

The party asked the PDP to specifically publish its contributions in advancing education in Osun West Senatorial District between 2003 and 2010.

Besides, the APC demanded from PDP to give blow by blow explanation on how it intends to dismantle the N11 billion multi-faceted education projects in Osun West Senatorial District that the Aregbesola-led APC government created and effected in the last seven years.

OSDF: Your party sometimes in 2016 came second in the rerun House of Assembly election in Ife Central State Constituency, what was the magic?

Fanibe: I won’t call it a magic, it is not an illusion, but a reality. The secret behind it is the interest of the populace after they had got tired of the party A and B. People are tired of going forward and backward.

I want to tell you that Accord Party is in 29 Local Governments, including the Area office and before the end of November, Accord Party will be officially launched in the remaining one Local Government in the state. In Ife Central House of Assembly election, where my party was said to have come second, I want to tell you that we won the election, but our victory was shortchanged. One, the election was conducted in my local government and we defeated the incumbent party, that is, the Peoples Democratic Party, but the PDP shortchanged us. Just take note that the police later arrested five hoodlums of the party who stole five ballot boxes.

Secondly, the popularity of the Accord Party in that election was premised on my own antecedent. Prior to this time from 1996 till date in Ife Local Governments, I have been paying WAEC/SSCE fees to support indigent students in the programs that over hundreds have benefited across Ife and its environs, provided financial supports for small scale traders since 1999 till date; God has also given me the privilege to provide humanitarian supports for civil servants, teachers and retirees in 2015, just as I have supported

the physically challenged people in one way or the other. That has helped a lot in giving our party the capacity to pull our weight, especially in Ife Central during the rerun election.

OSDF: On the forthcoming local government, what is your take on the parliamentary system of government that will be employed to choose the council leadership?

Fanibe: The OSSIEC held a meeting with political parties and intimated us with the arrangement, but we did not agree with the arrangement. We are practicing presidential system of government and the state want to use parliamentary system, the two are incomparable, as we have not practice the duo together in Nigeria.

OSDF: What is the chance of your party in the coming election?

Fanibe: If the government in the state will be honest in the process, the Accord

I hope that the same stand will be sustained in the forthcoming election, they should be fair, as sometimes, integrity can earn you more than what you deserve.

Fanibe: In the whole South West, it is only Chief Rasheed Ladoja and only a fragment of his group that are forming alliance with the PDP, the bulk of his supporters and other groups still remain in the party. And I want to add that as Ladoja is out, Doyin Okupe comes in, he is also a known name. One is out, one is in and we are still expecting more.

People are talking with us and we are expecting something greater as many politicians will soon join the party, which will boost our chances.

OSDF: What is your perception of Osun politics?

Fanibe: Osun State politics, from the two party we have tested I can only tell you that it is just like two faces of a drum. I won’t mention names, but we all know that one has done wonderfully well than the other. Besides, there is a relative peace in the state, which from experience was not like this before. The truth is that the present government of the APC has done well in Osun going by series of welfare programmes it has embarked on.

I think we have learned our lessons, we‘ve gone through the first 16 years of the PDP, and this is another seven years of the APC, all together 23 years of experience, which is enough for our people to know what they want. We‘ve seen what had been done, the capacity of the two sides, but Accord Party will do differently. The Peoples Democratic Party coming back is the same people that fails and oppress us in the past coming back and the APC with its hunger policies, the Osun people should have learned their lessons.

An American company, Green Environmental Services of America (GESA) and the America Green Environmental Solution Nigeria Limited (AGEGS) have concluded arrangements to invest a sum of $450millon into Osun state economy through waste management programme.

The company which signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the state government on Monday in Osogbo said the waste management programme is a conversion of waste to wealth service.

Speaking at the event, the president of the company, Mr Patrick Onyeije explained that the first phase of the projects would cost $250 million , assuring that the company was ready to commence operation soonest.

Onyeije who was represented by one of the top officials of the company, Major Samuel Adewumi (rtd) said the waste management programme would create about 5000 jobs in the state, thereby reducing unemployment.

He maintained that the programme would improve the economy of the state as waste will be collected from homes and recycled for valuable products such as tissue papers, plastics and organic manure (fertilizer) for farmers.

“The waste management service would create jobs, expand the economy, create a new dynamic economy in tourism and as well keep the environment clean”, said Onyeije.

Onyeije explained that every household in the state would get containers from AGEGS for different waste items, adding that the containers would be picked on designated days of the week and may include weekends as the need may arise.

He said, “Today marks a new beginning as we take the solemn commitment to protect our environment. We have to do our little best not to litter the streets but to recycle everything coming out of our homes and working places.

Let us take the scenario to be a large garden of our world which is put in the trust of ‘Mr X’.

As the clock winds down on his incumbency, some of ‘THEM’ make such noises as: “He is not cutting the grasses well”; “We have fantastic mower to keep the lawns”, they criticise.

Amongst them are those who, earlier, had sharper cutlasses and equipment to do the job when the garden was kept in their care. But they failed; and are shameless about it. Even new ones from within also join them in the gibberish discourse.

During their reign, they cut our grasses wet, thus resulting in an uneven cut. They lack the common knowledge that wet clippings can clog the mower; and that dumping clumps of grass on our lawn will smother the grass and result in brown spots, thereby destroying our garden!

Yes, truely, they are lawn-cutters.

They had all the opportunities to buy great cutlasses and mowers, but they couldn’t keep our garden!

They couldn’t come close to being a gardener, apparently because they don’t have the knowledge of how to keep a garden. They were never a gardener. That is why they struggle today for relevance, as they have been forgotten. There is no memory to house a cutter as there is for a gardener.

The lawn-cutter might just as well not have been there at all; the gardener will be there a lifetime.

They will reverberate the true narratives: ‘a particular man ensured that our share of monies entrusted in his care was made available to us in terms of the nutritious food we ate daily as pupils’.

No matter how Aregbesola haters, both from within and without, toil to distort true narratives of Aregbesola’s legacies, history that is being constructed in these 254,000 future parents can never be told falsely. They will tell their children and probably their children’s children about Omeals under Ògbéni Aregbesola.

The Irritation Of Begging For Alms

By Abdullahi Akintayo Every man has integrity to protect, but in the absence of basic needs for survival, man will bury his pride and ego, which will lead him to temporary or permanent begging. Analysis has revealed that poverty, unemployment, laziness and low mentality spread the practice of mendicancy.

Nigeria, at this present time is facing two major problems which are noncirculation of wealth and high demand for foods and consumable goods.

Unfortunately, the poor people are unable to satisfy their basic needs as a result of poverty and unemployment.

With this, many individuals have no option than to take to begging to earn stipends for survival.

Alms giving to poor is considered a holy deed and an honourable act, as it is supported religiously to give alms to the poor. But begging has now become a profession since it does not require any physical or mental effort to get alms from the givers. Even though it is supported by some religions to give alms to the poor, religion does not make it compulsory for one to give. It is voluntary.

It is now becoming a trend, addiction and a way of life in all parts of the country, where it is a common scenario seeing young ones and grown ups parading the streets, ATM stands, banks, markets, churches, mosques, car parks, bus-stops, event centres or any gathering. These are places where one will definitely come across one, two or more beggars, depending on the population.

The worrying aspect for some people is not the begging itself, but the manner of approach. Most beggars

to make one feel sad for not giving.

Children hawking on streets designed their own style of begging by narrating stories of how they misplaced money and the consequences, or “my mummy says I won’t eat if I don’t sell”.

At the initial stage, only disabled persons get involved in begging, but recently more able bodies have dominated the practice of begging.

Although, there are real beggars out who are really in need of help, but with the alarming rate and increase in begging, everyone thinks most beggars hide under the umbrella of unreasonable excuses or laziness to work. Voluntary givers who want to give beggars know the point where beggars resume daily, prompt and punctual. Usually, a real beggar does not have a choice, they receive whatever one gives irrespective of the

quantity or quality.

Unfortunately, many are agile beggars who are supposed to use their God-given strength, time and initiative to engage themselves in meaningful activities.

An act of begging cannot be fully eliminated but can be reduced. It is therefore necessary that the Federal, State and Local government to liaise with NGOs to put hands on the deck and carry out skill acquisition programmes to engage them in productive venture. By doing so, beggars who voluntarily go into begging can be trained to be a better person. Also the deformed individuals should be encouraged to engage in activities that could fetch them money.

It is on record that the government of Osun at a time declared emergency on the destitute, by rehabilitating some of the beggars and reuniting them with their families, but a lot more need to be done. Task force should be created to arrest, prosecute pretending or lazy beggars and stiff penalties or sanctions should be imposed on them.

The past of the country and its present, are so scary that one to wonder if that past is the future of Africa. It was the pearl of the Caribbean, a colonial possession of France that was the envy of all colonial powers – British, Spanish and Portuguese.

Haiti, once called the Pearl of the Antilles and the first independent republic of coloured people, is today the poorest country on the American continent” (Page 10).

One did not just wonder if the past of Haiti would not be the future of Africa but for the fact that African countries have relentlessly been following the path that Haiti has been following for two hundred years since that 1804 de parathion of independence. I thought Nigeria was the sleeping Economic power. Or South Africa. Or Angola. Or the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Haiti? How Engineer Etienne, do you want to swing this?

This book begins with an engineering mathematics lecture in 1895, in which a student asked if “the professor thinks that an object that is heavier than air could be used as a means of air transportation in the years come” (Page 4). Impossible is the response of the professor and fellow students. Fast forward to 1903 and the Wright brothers who build a machine that takes people into the air and back to earth. What made the impossible possible?

Nothing because it is a distraction to concentrate on a crime instead of punishing the criminal and getting on with the business of applying one’s intelligence and one’s brain to solving the problem at hand.

“The strategy they used,” says Engineer Etienne, “was to put the problem on paper, to translate it into mathematical language, to cope up with a solution, to take this solution and apply it to a flying machine” (Page 6).

They are able to solve the problem by applying Bernoulli’s theorem to it.

We can also write this formula in a

more explicit manner: A = (Sale of local products) + (Sale of exported products) - Purchases of imported items) - (Purchases of imported finished products). When the value of A is positive, we could say ‘Haiti is a developed country.’ (page 11) “This formula may also be seen as a triangle whose three sides are: 1.

This book was first published on November 15, 2015. It would seem that Engineer Etienne ignores countries that have used local consumption as the beginning of their industrialization. But this is really a minor matter. The point being made is that if you earn 600 units of whatever currency per month, you cannot develop no matter what foreign aid you are getting. No matter how many hours you spend on your knees or on the prayer mat or making sacrifices in from of whatever shrines, you cannot go forward and proper like other countries that have developed.

In spite of this book being only 71 or so pages, it is impossible to do just for it. It needs to be read in its entirety. The book points out that waiting for economic aid from another country

does not develop your country. Many writers have pointed this out both in Africa and outside of Africa. The book also insists that letting other countries/ companies invest in your country.

On the role of mass literacy in the country, the example of Cuba is given. “… in 1960, the literacy rate in Cuba was 60 per cent, a level lower than Haiti’s in 2011 (62.1 per cent). In only one year, from January 1961 to December 1961, the literacy rate in Cuba increased to 96 per cent” (Page 35).

Those who give gifts that give them gifts in return! And it is not those to whom the gifts are given who given who give the givers gifts. It is the gifts themselves that do. Watch out for the gifts you receive!
