By Israel Afolabi A 28 years-old man, Tunde Adebowale was on Monday arraigned before Magistrate A.A. Olowolagba of an Osogbo Magistrate Court in Osun State for stealing Mattresses and Plasma Television.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Fagboyinbo Abiodun told the court that the accused person on 23rd of March, 2017 stole mattresses, property of one Olapade Felicia at zone 9 Olasinde Estate Osogbo, while on the 11th of April 2017, he stole 26inches L.G Plasma television belonging to Royale Net Point.

He was docked separately on three-count charge and two-count charge respectively.

According to the charge sheet with a threecount charge, Adebowale committed felony to wit stealing and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 413 of the criminal code cap 34 Vol.II laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2003.

It revealed that on the same day, time and place, the accused, unlawfully jumped through the fence into the Heritage School premises with intent to commit felony and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 414 of the criminal code cap 34 Vol.II laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2003.

In the charge sheet with two-count charge, Adebowale allegedly broke into Royale Net point Office and stole one L.G Plasma television of 26 inches belonging to Royale Net Point, valued N54,000.

The accused person who has no legal representation in court, pleaded not guilty to all the charges leveled against him.

On the three-count charge, the presiding Magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N400,000 with two sureties in like sum, while on the two-count charge, he granted the bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The two cases were adjourned till June 8, 2017 for hearing.

INEC Threatens To Prosecute Citizens With Multiple Registrations

By Kehinde Ayantunji The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned against multiple registrations in the ongoing continuous registration and permanent voters cards distribution exercise across the country, saying any individual caught will not go unpunished.

The commission’s Administrative Secretary in Osun, Ademusire Emmanuel gave the warning during the INEC Stakeholders Election Forum meeting with the political parties, religion bodies, Non-Governmental Organisations and other concerned authorities.

Ademusire said INEC data base and voters registrations biometric technology have developed to a level that would make it impossible for any individual to compromise, saying the commission would prosecute any under age and multiple registration detected in accordance with relevant laws.

He said, the commission offices in the old 30 Local Governments and Modakeke Area Office in the state would be open every working days between 9.30 am and 4pm and urged leaders of political parties, traditional leaders and religion leaders to sensitise members of the public about the continuous registration exercise.

Given that the effects of the last review are still with us nearly seven years after, can labour in particular afford to ignore what the development will signpost for the economy, particularly for the struggling small and medium scale businesses?

Guaranteeing Healthy Living Through Food Safety Food is essential to life, but the production, processing and consumption of food can become hazardous to lives. Just as Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”; if we must abide by this axiom, basic hygiene, and avoidance of food contaminants must be ensured for the purpose of safety of our foods.

SOLA JACOBS writes on Food Safety from the Farm to the Table Advocacy and Sensitization Workshop organized by United Nation Industrial Organization (UNIDO) with other government agencies.

Food is critical and required for the sustenance of life, but at the same time could be hazardous to life if not properly secured; hence, the need for food safety from farm to the table, as well as consumption by individual consumers.

Food safety contributes significantly to the socio-economic status of Nations on public health, as data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicating annual impacts of food safety failures in Nigeria, shows that 13.7 million reported cases of food related illnesses is established in the country. The data further states that out of 20,600 deaths, 14,400 are caused by diarrhea and the victims are mainly children and elderly.

Also, the reports revealed that chronic infections from exposure to chemical intoxication (mostly due to aflatoxins from fungal infestation of groundnuts and grains) is responsible for up to 5,160 deaths per

Considering the dangers posed by unhealthy food in human lives, the recent two-day workshop by the United Nation Industrial Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of H e a l t h through the National Food Safety Management Committee, held at the Fountain University, Osogbo in the State of Osun to sensitize and advocate on food safety, so as to prevent food borne illnesses, was a right step in a r i g h t participants at the direction.

According to the anchor-person of the UNIDO, Mrs Moji Makanjuola at the opening session, the food safety awareness programme organized by the European Union (EU)-UNIDO National Quality Infrastructure (UQI) for Nigeria is providing support for the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Food Safety Management committee by building and strengthening the capacity of these institutions to modernize the nation’s food safety control and management system.

To achieve these objectives, desired level of food safety awareness among critical stakeholders in states, where the bulk of the foods and majority of the people live, is imperative. She explained that it is desirable for all tiers of governments to ensure the promotion of the culture of food safety practices among stakeholders involved in production, manufacturing, preparation, storage, distribution and sales of food items nationwide.

The Representative of the Federal Minister of Health, Mrs Anthonia Okpara said, the new National Food Safety Policy (FSP) was launched in 2014 by the Honourable Minister of Health with supports of UNIDO and other development partners.

She said the implementation of the policy started in 2015 and had since recorded several achievements, including, the draft of Food Safety and Quality Bill and Institutional Reform for Food Safety, which had been formulated and disseminated to public and private institutions, including international organizations such as FAO and DFID for public comments. Commending the efforts of the UNIDO and the National Food Safety Management Committee, the Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, reiterated the state government commitment to guarantee healthcare and food safety among the populace, adding that the state has revolutionized the slaughtering and sales of cows, in order to ensure sale of healthy livestock and adherence to health, hygiene and sanitation standards.

Represented by his deputy, Mrs Titi LaoyeTomori, he stated further that the Osunwon Omoluabi (Standard Measures and Weight) and modern package for sales of food items had been introduced in the state, adding that the state has collaborated with NAFDAC and other safety regulation bodies to ensure that potable water is offered to consumers by the sachet and bottled water producers within the state.

He therefore pledged the support of the state government at all levels on the chain to regulate food products and ensure strict adherence to safety standards by instituting relevant committees for immediate implementation of the Federal Government Policy on food safety awareness in the state.

At the workshop, the National Expert on Food Safety at UNIDO, Mr. John Tehinse who spoke on the topic, “Food Safety” Cheap and Effective Strategy against Food borne illnesses, noted that it is the duty of every farmer, buyer, transporter processor-production to consumption to ensure hygienic foods and drinks.

At the workshop, the participants, drawn from Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment and Sanitations, Food Vendors, Farmers, NAFDAC, and National Environment Standards and Regulation Agency (NESREA) agreed that food contamination occurred at different stages of its productions and consumption.

The question of processed food came to the fore, as the level of hygiene of imported foods, drinks and meats were queried. This put the NAFDAC and SON, as well as other regulatory agencies on their toes on the need to safeguard the nation from being a dumping ground for toxic foods.

Speaking at the workshop, Mrs. Adelani Toun of the state Ministry of Environment and Sanitation said, the workshop was needed at this time sequel to the outbreak of Lassa fever which claimed about 300 lives early this year.

According to her, the sensitization and advocacy by the UNIDO should be replicated at the grassroot, where there are core food producers, distributors, processors and consumers, as it would be an eye opener for them in ensuring safety production and processing of foods.

The Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola stated this while speaking at the two day workshop organized by the European Union in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) held at the Fountain University, Osogbo.

He stated that the population explosion has boosted food production and in the process, dangerous chemicals as well as other measures taken in research, like generic modification of crops and animals are tampering with quality of farm produce.

Governor Aregbesola, though commended the efforts of the standard organization of Nigeria, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, as well as the National Food Safety Management Committee, but noted that their activities are overwhelmed by abuse and non conformity of food producers.

On the efforts of the state government, the Governor stated that its government has revolutionized the slaughtering and sales of cows to ensure sale of healthy livestock and adhere to health, hygiene and sanitation standards and as well introduced the Osunwon Omoluabi, the modern packaging for sales of food items.

In his remark at the workshop, the Minister of Health, Dr Isaac Adewole who was represented by Mrs Anthonia Okpara, the Director of Food and Chemical said, the Federal Government had drafted Food Safety and Quality Bill and Institutional Reforms for Food Safety.

She therefore urged state governments to collaborate with the Federal Government to ensure the safety of food in all five chains of production to promote healthy living and increase on agric business in the country.

The United Nation Industrial Organization anchor person, Mrs Moji Makanjuola said that the organization is determined to sensitize stakeholders on the need for food safety to prevent food borne diseases.

Channelisation Of Waterways, Timely?

Over the years, floods have wreaked several havocs in many part of Nigeria, including Osun, but the proactive measures of governments in each of the affected states are vary. Since the assumption of Governor Rauf Aregbesola, attentions have been paid to flood-prone areas, through massive dredging of waterways across the state. Some of the said flood-prone area are Okoko River, Rasco Area, Obate Area, Gbonmi Area among others. As the raining season steps in, the state government has stepped up measures to prevent flooding, by reconstructing the bridges on some of the rivers. GBENGA ADENIYI visited the construction sites in Osogbo, particularly Rasco Area.

Our base here which is Rasco is flood-prone and year in year out, we are losing good to flooding. High Chief Enoch Kolapomoye Ajiboso has been installed as the Eesa of Inisa in Odo-Otin South Local Council Development area of the State of Osun.

At a colorful ceremony held at Olunisa Palace, Ajiboso who is now the second-incommand to Olunisa was admonished to give useful and beneficial advice to monarch in the running of the affairs of the ancient town.

Installing the High Chief, the Olunisa of Inisa, Oba Joseph Oyedele attributed the choice of Ajiboso to the good deeds of his father who was the Eesa when he was alive.

The monarch said, “given your educational background, you will be able to render invaluable services to the town”.

The newly-installed high chief attended Inisa Grammar School, Inisa for his Secondary School Education, while he did his two-year Advance Level Course at the famous Kiriji Memorial College, Igbajo.

He proceeded to the Premier University, University of Ibadan, Ibadan for his first and second degrees. Asula, as he is popularly

called by his friends, colleagues and admirers worked at the Human Resources Department of the First Bank Nigeria PLC at Marina, Lagos.

He resigned his post to go into partisan party politics where he contested and became the chairman of Agege Local Government Council Area of Lagos State twice.

Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council and the Association of Veteran Journalists on Saturday gathered to bid farewell to the late veteran journalist, Evangelist Ademola Ojo who died last month.

Ojo who retired from the service of the Osun State Broadcasting Cooperation (OSBC) died at the age of 67.

Journalists, veterans, members of the Nigeria Red Cross Society and family members eulogised the late Ojo at the lying-instate programme organised by Association of Veteran Journalists, at the NUJ Press Centre, Osogbo.

Osun NUJ Chairman, Abiodun Olalere who was represented by the Vice Chairman, Kehinde Ayantunji described Ojo, fondly called Abore as one of the best Yoruba interviewers of his generation.

He said late Ojo was a professional with dexterity to ask interviewee questions in a

way that would not be offended and would be forced to respond, noting that he understood good command of Yoruba language.

According to him, “he had a large heart, an attribute of a good leader and liberal mind, as he would not force his belief or position on anyone and would always appreciate your sense of judgement; he rarely condemned.”

Mr Kayode Adedire, former Director General, Reality Radio Vision Service, Iwo, described late Ademola Ojo as a thoroughbred professional who placed honour and integrity above any other consideration.

Adedire said, the late Ojo’s BCOS Abore programme in the old Oyo state was second to none to the extent that the state parliament passed a resolution to stop the programme when they could not bear the heat of Abore.

Olokun Festival Celebrated In Grand Style In Ife •Ooni's Wife Canvasses Promotion Of African Religion And Culture The Yeyeluwa of Ife, Olori Wuraola Ogunwusi has called on Nigerian to embrace and showcase their cultural heritage to the world, as it is a veritable source of economic development for Nigeria.

Olori Wuraola made this call at the annual Olokun festival held in Ile Ife last weekend.

The Olokun Festival is one of the annual cultural festivals in Yorubaland, particularly in Ile-Ife, the source of the Yoruba race. The Olokun shrine is located in the Ilode quarter of Ile Ife. It is believed that Olokun is one of the 401 Yoruba deities God sent to Ile-Ife to start the mankind. While Oduduwa, Ogun, Sango, Alafere are the deities of prayer, iron, thunder and wind respectively, Olokun is in charge of the sea.

This year Olokun festival in the ancient city attracted devotees from South Africa, Republic of Benin, Delta, Edo States, Bayelsa and Ondo States among others and the festival was celebrated in grand style.

According to the Ooni’s wife, the celebration of Olokun festival is another means of resuscitating Yoruba tradition and sustaining culture so as to boost the Nigerian economy.

In her word: “African religion celebration is not barbaric, rather it showcases the tourism aspect of the country and we want our people to understand and embrace our cultural heritage”.

She explained further that everyone is entitled to be a devotee of Olokun as the practice of Olokun is not limited to a

The communiqué also lamented the deteriorating state of infrastructures in public health institutions across the country and called on governments at all levels, to place premium on developing the sector.

It called on the Federal Government to be proactive by having a strong rapid emergency response team to handle outbreak of diseases, just as it stressed the need to resume local production of vaccines in the country.

Political Permutations Begin Over Adeleke's Succesor

Barely two weeks after the demise of the first civilian Governor of Osun State, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, politicians have begun to do their permutations, as his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) searches for a replacement to fill the vacant seat of Osun-West Senatorial District in the Nigeria Senate.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to conduct a bye-election three months after the death of Adeleke in line with the provision of the Electoral Act. Findings revealed that the different interests in the party have been strategizing to ensure that they do not miss out in the race to grab the ticket for the senatorial seat believing that once their faction picks it, victory is guaranteed in the senatorial poll.

Some of those preparing for the ticket, the medium gathered, include, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti from Iwo, Elder Peter Babalola from Ikire, Hon. Foluke Etteh also from Ikire, as well as Senator Mudashir Hussain.

It was alleged that the Adeoti faction had the silence support of the party hierarchy in the state while Peter Babalola was said to be seeking the approval and support of Governor Rauf Aregbesola, whose body language could not be fathomed yet.

The Ede party loyalists believed that the generosity of the late Adeleke could brighten the chance of the younger Adeleke within his political dynasty, stressing the need to preserve the dynasty in the interest of the party in the zone.

An unconfirmed source said the ambition to retain the seat by Adeleke family has the blessing of Dr. Deji Adeleke who was reported to have agreed to support the younger Adeleke to secure the senatorial ticket in the interest of equity and for the teeming populace of the town.

Feelers revealed that the APC in Ede zone would stop at nothing to ensure that they retain the ticket, while some party leaders in the state seem to want to work in

favour of another candidate from another zone in the district.

Meanwhile the former Speaker of the State Assembly, Bello has expressed interest to vie for the ticket under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and is said to be banking on his perceived division in the APC to win the senatorial poll.

However, the former speaker is said to have a rival to contend with in person of a former Senator and Minister, Mr Olasunkanmi Akinlabi, who a PDP leaders said, might also be interested in the ticket.

Whichever ways, an APC leader in Ede disclosed that the party could retain or lose the seat depending on the permutation it deems fit in selecting a replacement for the late senator.
