HAUNTING: PRESENCE OF THE ARCHITECTURAL THEORY Columbus, OH Spring 2019 | Jeff Kipnis The studio focuses on the research of the “Presence Process of Architectural Theory. The task was to design a building to house the Presence Process Program. The site is located on the plaza between The Wexner Center for the Arts and Sullivant Hall on the campus of The Ohio State University. The goal of the studio was to create a haunting effect in the architecture through the use of the five senses. This project focus on the theory of using two of the five senses. The two senses in this project are sight and smell. People will see a variety of colors and experience a variety of smells as they move from the exterior into the different spaces in the building. Illustrator | Rhino | Vray

The first exercise was the “box atomization and decomposition. This exercise consist of researching and selecting three individual image and project it on to three different surfaces of a cube or rectangular volume. Upon extrusion, the lines of each images will intersect and establish points of intersections in various locations. Those points of intersection would later be boolean difference three different times to create three different spaces inside the cube.

This painting is call, “Extasy. It is a figurative painting by Stefan Gahr. This painting is also part of an Expressive Lacquer paintings collection in London, United Kingdom.

This is a painting by, Gail Brodholt. Brodholt is a leading painter of contemporary urban landscape. He is known for his portrayal various cityscape and landscape through London and the United Kingdom.

This is a painting of an urban landscape by architect, Zaha Hadid. Hadid was an Iraqi born London based architect whose work started out a constructivist or contemporary painting.

The drawings are in the form of a render. It consist of overlaying three to five renders to create the final representation. These drawings represents the various spaces that are bound inside the grid through the use of materiality. The placement of the building is consider to be at the entrance to the university and will change the view onto and out of campus. Most importantly, the strategic placement the building onto the site will affect how individuals navigate around the plaza. This building will function as an architectural haunting by blocking the gateway to campus and bring individuals back to their “Presence Process as they have to make a decision to walk around or through it.

The model was built out of candy and other consumable sweets. Each piece of candy were chosen to further expand upon the theory of architectural haunting. The different color candy represents the different zones. Underneath the model is a lighting system can strengthen the color of different zones or reduce its appearances. The lights also help strengthen the smell by heating up the candy so the smell is more present.

ARETHA FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS Detroit, MI Autumn 2018 | Jane Murphy Aretha Franklin High School for the Performing Arts sits on an important site in Detroit, Michigan. It is surrounded by parks, major avenues and an important neighborhood designed by Mies van der Rohe. The concept for the project began with a site analysis that connected various points on and surrounding the site to form swoosh. The four swoosh created intersections in various locations of the building. Those intersections were used to divide the building into different zones to house the different programs required for the school to function. Illustrator | Rhino| Photoshop| Vray

CASE WESTERN’S CRAIGSLIST MEDICAL LIBRARY Cleveland, OH Autumn 2017 | Jackie Gargus

The concept of the Case Western Medical Library to develop a building that consist of a major exterior circulation that connects the different areas of the building and allow individuals to have different perspective of the building on different elevation. WAVE IN SUSPENSION

Spring 2017 | Elizabeth Leidy

Group Members: Zach Polen, Kirsten Goodge, Tovah Kaiser, Megan Pettner, Suzy Shrout, and Drew Williams Everyone in studio was paired up in groups of two by our professor to research and share our idea for the final installation. My partner and I developed a design that was selected to move forward at mid-review. We gained five new members after mid-review and worked together to expand and improve the project. The theme of the project was, “Double Dome. The concept of our design was to create a cantilever roof structure made entirely of cardboard and held together by superglue and 3D printed joints. Our goal was to test the strength of cardboard by creating a design that would resist against gravity.

This project consist of designing two luxury apartments on a small plot of land in a busy city. The site a small plot of land surrounded by buildings on three sides and a busy street on one. The north, east and west elevation faces another building, and the south elevation faces the street. This design took the shape of the site, scale it down, extrude it into a volume and duplicate it into two volumes. The idea for is to give both of the tenants enough public and private space facing the north and south elevation. Each apartment has its own staircase that connects every floor. The design of the staircase also allow the two tenants to see and talk to each other without having to leave their home. Illustrator | Rhino| Photoshop| Vray

The task was to design a retreat house for a family on the edge of a cliff. This project consist of a nine square grid square that was extruded to form a single volume. The extruded volume be-comes the house. The house was design in section without blocking any views of the lake. The layout of the house has most of its public spaces on the upper levels closest to the street and private spaces on the lower levels closest to the lake. This house allows its tenants to experience different views out onto the lake from different elevation without having to leave their house. Illustrator | Rhino| Photoshop| Vray
