DIRECTOR’S NOTE As I reflect on the end of my first session with OLLI this fall, I knew OLLI offered amazing programming and had a fantastic community, but I now see that I had barely scratched the surface of how incredibly brilliant, endlessly curious, and welcoming our OLLI community is. Whether you’re joining us in Stillwater, Oklahoma City, Tulsa or online, our instructors and speakers offer top notch expertise, and our members asks the very best questions leading to the kind of rich dialogue we’re reluctant to wrap up as each class period ends.

This spring marks the 20th anniversary year for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at OSU. We’ll be celebrating in a number of ways throughout the year (keep an eye on our newsletter and our Facebook and Instagram accounts for details) – I’m most excited about the ways we’re working to grow OLLI at OSU. We are offering a standing public servant discount (50% off of premium or a la carte membership) for those who are Pre-K-12 teachers, first responders, military service members or veterans. This discount includes those who retired from these fields. We’re also offering a 50% discount off of premium membership for those who retire from OSU for the first year with OLLI. Come join us in Stillwater as we hold our All-OLLI Anniversary Celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. (location TBD – keep an eye on the newsletter for more details) at our first Town Hall of the year; we’ll celebrate with refreshments and some prizes! And we’ll continue to celebrate throughout 2026 so stay tuned!

Whether you’re new to one of our hub communities and want to get to know people, a busy community member realizing you’ll never use all that PTO you have built up, or a retiree, OLLI is for you. As you’ll see when you browse the catalog, we have some classes that are a single 90-minute session, some that are a couple hours a week for eight weeks, and everything in between; we’re adding more three- or four-week courses to increase accessibility! WHAT IS OLLI? The Joy of Learning The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Oklahoma State University is a member-driven program offering courses and other learning opportunities (no tests, no homework) strictly for the joy of learning. While our focus is on learners who are 50+, OLLI is for everyone; any adult can join!

Opportunities include courses, lectures, workshops, travel opportunities and special events. Instructors are qualified, engaging individuals (many OSU faculty) who are experts in the arts, history, current events, sciences, business, current events, government and more.

Each of the OLLI at OSU locations has a local curriculum committee, and OLLI at OSU also has an advisory council that provides insights and direction across all sites. All current members are eligible to serve as volunteers on these committees and more. Contact the OLLI office for more information.

All operating costs are funded by membership fees, individual donors, the Bernard Osher Foundation and Oklahoma State University, with special thanks to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the OSU College of Education and Human Sciences.

OLLI MEMBERSHIP You must be an OLLI member to enroll in any OLLI courses. OLLI memberships operate on a rolling basis and last for one year; memberships purchased this spring, for example, will last through spring, summer and fall 2026. Membership dues are paid annually and entitle the holder to participate in courses as well as social events, travel opportunities, special events and OLLI committees.

Memberships may not be shared or transferred to another party; however, OLLI members are strongly encouraged to bring guests; just let your local coordinator know your guest’s name at check in (please know that guest passes do not apply to travel courses or those with materials fees – all attendees must register in those cases so that expenses are covered).

Each guest may visit one time per year on a day pass without purchasing a membership.

You can join OLLI at any time; when joining mid-session, your membership will be for the remainder of that session plus the following two, as all memberships span three consecutive sessions.

COURSE FORMAT OPTIONS OLLI offers you three ways to participate in courses. These options will maximize your opportunities to enjoy the greatest number of classes.

• In Person — This is the traditional class model in which you attend the class in person with an instructor.

• Online — Courses are offered through Zoom. Links stay the same for multi-week courses. Recordings are shared with enrollees after the class. Note: Not all courses are recorded.

• Live Feed — Courses are live streamed from one location to another.

POLICIES Attendance Your active participation is important to the success of our classes.

If you are enrolled in an online course, please make every attempt to be present on class days. We strive to not have a situation where 20 people enroll but only five show up for the live presentation.

Cancellation Deadlines and Member Credit OLLI does not provide refunds to members (unless OLLI must cancel the course), though in extenuating circumstances, refunds may be considered. Please contact the director if such a need arises.

Generally, members who cancel their participation in a course or event prior to that activity’s cancellation deadline (one week prior to the course’s start date unless otherwise stated) may receive credit toward a future OLLI course or membership fee upon request.

Class Size Limits Courses that are limited in size are noted in the course descriptions.

If you are interested in one of these courses, enroll early. Classes must have a minimum of six students enrolled unless otherwise noted.

Waitlists Once a course/activity fills, members are placed on a waitlist in order of enrollment. Members wishing to cancel their participation in an OLLI at OSU activity should contact olli@okstate.edu or 405-744-5868 at least one week in advance of the activity (when possible). Staff will then notify the next member on the waitlist.

Name Badges OLLI members now have an evergreen name badge. Once you have been given your name badge, you are responsible for its care and safekeeping. If you are new to OLLI or haven’t received your name badge during a previous session, you should have one waiting for you at your first class. If you register less than one week prior to the first class meeting date, your name tag will be available the second meeting date. Please alert the site coordinator if your name badge needs to be replaced. You are responsible for wearing it whenever you are at an OLLI event or class; this supports all of us in getting to know one another.

Payment and Refunds All fees are due at the time of registration. If canceled seven days or more prior to the class start date, credit will be applied to a future course (see details under “cancellation deadlines” above). We accept payment by check and by Visa/MasterCard/Discover credit cards. Only OSU employees may accept payments. The staff who work for our satellite classroom partners cannot accept payments for OLLI at OSU memberships or activities.

OLLI at OSU staff make every attempt to reschedule activities that cannot be held at their originally scheduled date and time. If a class cannot be rescheduled, any course fees paid will be refunded or credited to your account.

Public Health and Safety OLLI at OSU staff follow the health and safety policies put forth by the university. If you are feeling ill, please stay home to keep yourself and fellow OLLI members safe.

Student Conduct OLLI adheres to the OSU Student Code of Conduct found at okla.st/conduct.

Textbooks and Supplies All member levels are responsible for purchasing their own supplies and recommended texts. Course handouts will be emailed prior to classes. A limited number of paper copies will be available for in-person classes.

Weather Closures and Cancellation Notices If OSU closes due to inclement weather, all OLLI at OSU activities will be canceled as well. Otherwise, the decision to cancel an activity during inclement weather will be made based on conditions at each classroom location and input from our instructors. In the event that an OLLI at OSU activity is canceled or rescheduled for any reason, members will be notified by email or text message. It is important that you provide OLLI at OSU with your best contact information. If your phone accepts text messages, please ensure we have your mobile carrier on file (typically provided upon joining OLLI, but you may follow up to provide this information at any time to olli@okstate.edu).

Course Communication Via Email By enrolling in a course, you give permission for OLLI to share your email address with your volunteer instructor(s) so that they may provide instructional materials/resources to the group as needed.

Instructors should not attempt to sell goods or services to OLLI members or solicit business of any kind during a course they teach or at any point after the course if the email address was obtained via OLLI unless expressly requested by the student.

Email Newsletter Active members receive the e-newsletter. These emails tend to include but are not limited to the following information: • The upcoming week’s schedule • Important program announcements and schedule changes • Upcoming local events of interest If you’re not receiving our emails in your inbox, first check to see if your email provider is filtering them into your junk or spam folder.

Zoom Recordings Links to available recordings for online courses are only sent to course enrollees. The recordings will remain available through the end of the session. Not all online courses are recorded; this is at the instructor’s discretion.

Join us as we explore “Free Land,” the novel written for adults by Rose Wilder Lane, daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder. The book follows a newly married couple as they attempt homesteading in Dakota Territory during the 1880s, a story that will feel familiar to anyone who has read the Little House books. Together, we’ll place the novel in its historical context, examine its publication history (and whether Laura herself knew of it), and consider Rose’s life and her complex relationship with her parents.

Exercise is medicine. This course will take an exercise and nutrition based approach to the care and prevention of chronic illnesses associated with aging. Participants will learn about how aging affects the body, different types of chronic illnesses, and how proper nutrition and exercise prescription can possibly attenuate the effects of aging/disease. This class will be offered in a lecture style with time left at the end of each class for discussions or short exercise bouts depending on the desires of the class. Only Hope: My Mother and the Holocaust Brought to Light Tuesday 12-1:30p | 2/24

Before she died in 1974, Felicia Bornstein Lubliner wrote powerful accounts of her internment in ghettos and concentration camps in Nazi-occupied Poland. Her son, Irv, compiled and published her stories as “Only Hope: A Survivor’s Stories of the Holocaust,” contributing its foreword and afterword. He will share excerpts, reflecting on her strength, his own experience as a child of survivors, and the process of bringing her work to light.

Susanne Severeid, host of an Emmy-winning PBS Holocaust documentary, said Felicia Lubliner “weaves beauty and humanity into her writing without sparing the grim details of Auschwitz.” Through his mother’s writings, the instructor invites you to journey back in time, to bear witness to the Holocaust, and to see history through the eyes of one who lived — and endured — it.

The History of MAPS and General Obligation Bonds in Oklahoma City Mondays 1:30-3:30p | 2/16 - 4/6 (no class 3/16 or 3/23)

Dr. Moore served on the congressional staff of U.S.Congressman Mickey Edwards for two terms and was Chief of Staff for OKC Mayor Ron Norick for eight years. Dr. Moore was the staff person during the creation of the now historic “MAPS” project in Oklahoma City and was the person credited with coining the acronym “MAPS.” Join us to learn about the dynamic passage and implementation MAPS, MAPS for Kids, MAPS 3 and MAPS 4 programs, as well as the General Obligation Bond Issues in OKC of 2000, 2007, 2017, and 2025 (the last one a record investment in the future of the city) – and how each of these shapes the vibrant city we know today!

In this hands-on series, we’ll be guided through the homemade/ homegrown methods you’ve always wanted to know! You’ll learn how to prepare a jam or jelly and water bath for canning in the first class period, then you’ll focus on herbs and spices in the second class, including how to preserve your homegrown varieties, how to use them to greatest effect in your cooking, and there will be a food demo and tasting. Finally, in the last session (this one will be 1-1.5 hours), there will be a brief presentation on how to care for succulents and ensign a succulent dish garden; then enjoy a hands-on activity preparing your own succulent garden dish to take home.

Train Your Brain: Cognitive Simulation Program

Tuesdays and Thursdays 4-5p | 2/17 - 4/16 (no class 3/17 or 3/19) Cognitive Stimulation Program: Train your Brain is an interactive 8-week group-based program aimed at improving the different cognitive skills (including memory, attention, planning and sequencing) of older adults who may be noticing changes in their abilities or are experiencing difficulties managing their daily schedules due to cognitive deficits.

The program is relevant for anyone over the age of 55 years who would like to challenge their abilities, learn about different strategies, or try different activities or online apps aimed at improving cognitive skills.

Being Peace: Taking the Path of Inner Peace Thursday 10a-12p | 2/19 - 3/12

Living in a divided world can lead not only to outer discord and conflict but also inner unrest and turmoil. An issue in both cases is most often who’s right and who’s wrong and — as we each feel ourselves on the side of “right” — how to stop those who are “wrong.” While debate has its virtues and political action may be necessary, no lasting inner peace of mind will ever be found so long as one fixates on right and wrong. If we truly wish to be at peace, we need to find a path that lifts us above conflict without giving up our stand on the issues or abandoning the cause. This course examines the inner causes of unrest and resistance and explores ways to find inner peace despite living in a divided world, primarily by enjoying mindful practices.

Beginner and Intermediate Ukulele

Thursdays 1:30-3:30p | 3/5 - 4/16 (no class 3/19) Our method provides the instant gratification of playing songs right away but uses those basics to build upon, providing the knowledge needed to continue learning on your own. We start with simple chords using the best technique and then add chords so you will be able to play 4-chord songs in the key of C, at least 3-chord songs in the key of G, and at least 2-chord songs in the key of D. We have 12 ukuleles available for checkout for the duration of the course. Each session will involve hands-on learning and strumming our ukuleles, one-on-one time with instructors and experienced volunteers, and a sing-along using the chords we have learned.

Intermediate players will have the opportunity to split off with an instructor to go beyond the basics — we will meet you where you are and help you progress.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy

Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30-9:20a | 2/24 - 8/13 (no class 3/17 or 3/19) Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is a community-based exercise program consisting of three eight-week resistance training courses that are held twice per week, designed to promote functional fitness and lifelong independence. The program also teaches individuals how to lift weights safely in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Each class lasts approximately 50 minutes, including a 5-minute warmup, 40 minutes of guided exercise, and a 5-minute cooldown. A key feature of the program is its community setting, which encourages participants — friends, spouses, and other community members — to reconnect or build new relationships.

Discovering Birds

There must be something, because a recent estimate suggested there are 96 million birders in the US, and they are generating $279 billion in annual economic impact. If you would like to know why so many are riveted by birds and learn how you can get in on the exciting and enduring pastime that is birding, then this course is for you. In ‘Part One’ we’ll cover the basics of how to notice, identify and share observations of the birds around you. The American Southwest

Tuesdays 10a-12p | 2/24 - 3/24 (no class 3/17) “The American Southwest” covers a badly defined area that includes at least five states and is more diverse than most people think. We will start with tectonic plates and geology, cover environment and ecology, and then bring in the humans. Native American, from distant pre-history and from numerous tribes that exist today will appear as hunters, gatherers and fine agriculturalists, followed by Spanish colonizers and missions, Anglo traders and trappers, railroads and artists, tourists and retirees, and more. We will also look at the stress on natural resources — particularly water — and more. We will compress millions of years of geological and environmental history, and at least 25,000 years of human history, into an eight-hour course. Along the way you’ll see images of geology, living things, Mimbres pottery and Navajo weavings, Hohokam canals, deep mines, over-large metropolises, and an amazingly beautiful land.

Exploring Magical Realism
