WELCOME TO INGFIELD PHIL SMITH, CHAIRMAN

Good afternoon and welcome to Ingfield for this afternoon’s game. I hope the officials, management and players of Carlton Town have had a comfortable journey up today and enjoy their visit to Ossett, with the exception of the full time result of course! We come into this game on the back of three wins and a draw in the last five games, the most recent of which was the County Cup victory over near neighbours Horbury Town on Tuesday evening. It was great to see almost 800 people inside the ground and I would just like to praise the patience of those arriving not long before kick-off as we did our best to get everyone inside for the 7:45pm. The game, as expected, was a fiery affair as the visitors looked to put a mark down in the first competitive game between the

two sides. We were certainly on the end of some strong challenges and on another day the opposition could easily have been reduced to eight or nine men. As it was, I felt our players stood up to the robust nature of Horbury’s play, didn’t engage in it and ultimately the quality of our side won through with two excellent goals. The opening goal is one of my favourite goals for some time, from Milambo winning the ball and finding Reaney. His drive forward and pass to Plater who’s quick thinking picked out Milambo who, not content with starting the move, drove forward down the left. His cross picked out Peterson who comfortably knocked the ball onto Ibrahim. Unable to get an effort on goal himself he laid the ball to Reaney who struck the ball into the roof of the net. An excellent team goal! The second from Janni Lipka wasn’t bad too, picking up on a defensive mistake he lashed the ball home for his second goal in two games. I am sure someone told me he only scored once a season! With his ability and shooting power I am sure there will be many more to come.

WELCOME TO INGFIELD PHIL SMITH, CHAIRMAN Today’s opponents have had a good start to the season, with runs in both the FA Cup and Trophy meaning they have played fewer league games than the rest of the NPL East so far. This will be another competitive game and whatever the result, come full time both sides will know they have been in a game.

I would like to wish Steve Hanks a happy 70th birthday for last week. Somebody who has been by my side right from the very start of my journey here in Ossett, someone I still trust as close council on all things related to football administration. Enjoy the game.

57 MILE WALK FOR THE UK SEPSIS TRUST Runcorn to Gawthorpe for The UK Sepsis Trust Next Friday, shortly after the final whistle of our game with Brighouse Town, our programme editor Joe and regular OUFC matchgoer George will begin a 57-Mile trek. The walk will be in aid of The UK Sepsis Trust and in memory of two of Joe’s Grandparents – Angela and Roy who both lost their lives to sepsis last year. The occasion will be made more pertinent with the walk beginning at Angela’s (on the wrong side of the Pennines) before ending at Roy’s in Gawthorpe some 20 hours later.

THE PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS NEVILLE WIGGLESWORTH

To all my avid readers (well Moz anyway) I start these notes with reference to last Saturday’s trip to the North East for the third time this season already. To date we’ve had five games on the road and three of those have been against former Northern League opposition and those three treks have produced our three wins so far this current campaign. I’d be willing to bet that not many tems, if any, could boast a statistic comparable with that one. As we all know only too well there are no easy games against teams from the Northumberland/Durham area so 9 points from a possible 9 is no mean feat. My biggest regret is that we haven’t had more fans in attendance to witness these performances. That’s got nothing to do with any kind of apathy amongst the Ossett United faithful – indeed far from it but the fact that right now we are not in a financial position to stand the ever increasing costs of coach travel to away games and not everyone who otherwise might have wanted to go could make the journey.

Let’s also take note of the fact that our last league opponents Consett, had they won that game, would now be sitting proudly at the top of the Division One East table. Maybe that fact puts into perspective the magnitude of our performance on the day. If we could have replicated that kind of form here at Ingfield it goes without saying that we would be in a much more comfortable position in the league and I fel sure we’d be well on the way to building up home’gates’ to somewhere near the numbers of previous seasons. There’s no doubt that our performances at Ashington, Newton Aycliffe and Consett bear no resemblance whatsoever to the kind of displays we have served up at home and it would be nice to start to addressing that situation and putting it right hopefully starting this afternoon when we entertain Carlton Town. The performance at Consett in particular had everything fans could possibly wish for – character, determination, resilience, concentration, penetration and any other kind of positive you may wish for from our team. Those who were in attendance were privileged to see our lads perform to the levels they did. Let’s now hope we can build on this and start showing similar form here at Ingfield. If we do I’m sure supporters will start coming back once the word gets around and that, of course, will be to the benefit of all parties.

THE PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS NEVILLE WIGGLESWORTH Not for the first time I have to say we look a completely different team away from home for whatever reason but if we can address that situation and translate our displays on the road to something similar here at home we will almost certainly have a good deal to look forward to as the campaign progresses. We have now shown what we are capable of and it is up to the management and the players to draw on that experience and translate it to good effect. I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Directors, Officials, management team, players and not least the supporters of Carlton Town for this

afternoon’s Northern Premier League fixture and we hope they have a safe journey back to Nottinghamshire after the match. Carlton had a difficult time of things last season but they have made a much more solid start this time around. With 12 points from their opening 6 games and picking up 9 points away from home they will no doubt provide a stern test of our resolve and we will have to be at our best to get a result from the game.

MICK NORBURY– COACH Norbs is no stranger to Ossett having played for both Ossett Albion and Town, his playing career saw him make almost 100 league appearances for Cambridge United, Preston North End and Doncaster Rovers. After retiring from playing he has managed in the NCEL as well as working with Grant Black at Ossett Town and Belper Town before moving to Ossett United in October 2022. Norbs left at the end of the 22/23 season to take up a role at a Dearne & District in the Central Midlands League before returning to the Ingfield coaching staff in September 2023

THE OPPOSITION Carlton Town - Club History The Club was founded in 1904 under the name of Sneinton FC and for much of the 20th century played its football in the Nottinghamshire Football Alliance. Sneinton won the league in 1905-06 and picked up three titles in succession between 1907-08 and 1909-10. The League was strong enough in the early part of the century to enter clubs into the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup and Sneinton competed for 20 successive seasons between 1907-08 and 1930-31 albeit never progressing beyond the first round qualifying. It would be 73 years before they entered the Cup again. Indeed, the club had to wait some time for further success, winning the Second Division title (third tier) in 1984-85 and the First Division title (second tier) in 199293. The club had led somewhat of a nomadic existence, playing at various grounds, and only settled at its current location of Stoke Lane, Gedling, in the early 1990s. This move coincided with the ambition from within the Club to progress beyond the confines of County football and, following a third-place finish in the Senior Division (top tier) in 1994-95, the club joined the Central Midlands Football League. The first season in the CML was reasonable, but at the start of the 1996-97 campaign the Club was left with just three players and no manager. In a desperate quandary, chairman Bill Stokeld turned to former players Tommy Brookbanks and Neil Cooper who agreed to take over the managerial reigns at Sneinton, and there began a period of outstanding success.

Brookbanks led the club brilliantly for 14 years from 1996 – 2010 with the club gaining four promotions under his stewardship. He took just two years to gain promotion from the Premier Division to the Supreme Division of the CML, and three years later only ground grading issues prevented elevation into the Northern Counties (East) League. In 2002 chairman Mick Garton of local company MSR Newsgroup took over the hot seat at Stoke Lane in 2002 bringing finances to ensure ground-grading wouldn’t be an issue again and the club also changed its name to Carlton Town. In its first season under its new name it duly won the CML title and gained promotion to the First Division of the NCEL. The Millers spent three years in this division before winning the league in 2005-06 and gaining promotion to the NCEL Premier Division. However, by this stage the

THE OPPOSITION club was without club President and legend Bill Stokeld, who passed away watching the Millers on 23 October 2004. Bill had been involved with the Club for over 50 years and it is fitting that his name lives on through the name of the stadium itself. On the last day of the following season, 2006-07, Dean Gent’s 94th minute winner secured a 2-1 win at Garforth to earn a second successive promotion, this time to the NPL First Division South. Carlton have remained at step 4 ever since. Carlton’s first season at this level saw them finish a creditable 10th, and in 200809 they finished fourth and made the play-offs, where future England international Jamie Vardy was amongst the scorers as Stocksbridge Park Steels won 5-2 in South Yorkshire. Another top half finish followed in 2009-10 before Brookbanks decided to move on to Premier Division Hucknall Town. New manager Les McJannet recruited a whole new squad and his side made a fantastic start to the campaign, losing just one of the opening 15 games and finishing in eighth place. The club also made it to the final of the Notts Senior Cup for the first time before being well beaten by Conference North Eastwood Town. The next three seasons brought even more success. 2011-12 saw the Millers finish second in the table, their highest pyramid finish to date, score 101 league goals and only go out of the play-offs after a penalty shoot-out defeat against Leek Town. The league form dipped in 2012-13 but McJannet brought silverware to the Club in the form of a first ever Notts Senior Cup success, beating his former club Sutton Town 5-2 in the final, even though centre-half Grant Brindley had to play in goal due to an injury crisis. The club also made it through the third round qualifying of the FA Cup for the first time before going out to Bradford (Park Avenue). The Millers finished tenth in 2013-14 and once again the team save its best performances for the cup competitions, with another third round qualifying appearance in the FA Cup and a best-ever semi-final showing in the League Cup in a run which included a memorable quarter-final win at home to FC United of Manchester. The Millers also retained the Notts Senior Cup in some style, beating Rainworth MW 6-2 in the final. If the first half of the decade had been characterised by success after success, the following five years was seemingly one long struggle against relegation in

THE OPPOSITION front of ever-decreasing crowds with just the one tremendous highlight in the middle. In 2014-15 the Millers opened with three defeats and never really recovered, eventually finishing in 18th position. At the end of the campaign McJannet decided to call it a day. He was replaced by his assistant Wayne Scott who had led the under 21s to an impressive second place in their division in McJannet’s final year. Scott’s first two seasons in charge were almost identical, with Carlton starting poorly before hitting their stride in February or March, putting together excellent winning runs, and pulling well clear of the drop in points terms at least. Those seasons saw 18th and 19th placed finishes in the league but Scott’s second season at the helm ended in spectacular style with the manager leading the club to its third win in the Notts Senior Cup, beating local rivals Basford Utd 4-1 at Notts County’s Meadow Lane. 2017-18 saw a good start but a horrendous run of postponements saw Carlton having to play their final 12 matches in the last 24 days of the season, and without a win in the last 10 they once again finished 19th. 2018-19 saw Carlton play in the newly-reorganised NPL First Division East which included some mammoth away journeys including a 344-mile round trip to Morpeth but contained just 20 teams, down from the previous 22. Carlton struggled and once again finished 19th which should have meant relegation but the Millers were granted a reprieve after AFC Mansfield were relegated instead for ground-grading issues. At the end of the campaign Carlton parted company with Scott and Brookbanks returned as manager, jointly with his ex-Coalville sidekick Mark Harvey. The NPL abandoned the East-West split of the First Division after just one season due to imbalance in the travelling distances and returned effectively to a North-South split, albeit with the two divisional names being slightly different. The change was instant, with the team playing a more entertaining pass and move style and the two managers inspiring some excellent displays out of a squad that was otherwise more or less the same that had been at the club the previous year. Carlton hit the ground running in 2019-20 with four straight wins. They spent a month at the top of the table in the Autumn and were in fifth place in the table when the season was brought to its abrupt end due to Covid-19. Carlton only managed to play nine league games of the truncated 2020-21

THE OPPOSITION season before it too was brought to an early end due to the virus. They did manage a first FA Cup win in six years, albeit on penalties, and their best display of the campaign was in defeat at higher ranked Banbury Utd in the same competition. The summer of 2021 saw the expansion of step 4 which led to Carlton being placed into the newly-formed NPL Midlands division. 2021-22 was a fine season with the Millers winning five of the opening six games to mount a genuine promotion challenge. Carlton slipped out of the top five after some inconsistent displays in the winter months but the side rallied towards the end of the campaign and only just missed out on a play-off spot with a sixth placed finish, the best in 10 years. The Millers won through to the first round proper of the FA Trophy for the first time and picked up their fourth Notts Senior Cup title with a 1-0 win against Mansfield Town U23. The semi-final win against Nottingham Forest U23 was played in front of a club-record home crowd of 733. The club was moved laterally to the First Division East for the 2022-23 season. This meant some substantial away trips to the North East and saw a number of players leave due to the increased travel commitments. The Millers struggled throughout the season, and found themselves 10 points adrift of safety with just 10 games remaining. But the re-signing of former captain Alex Troke was the catalyst to four successive away wins and 19 points from those final 10 games as Carlton finished in 17th position and avoided a playoff to stay up after North Shields were demoted due to a failed ground grading. The club did make it to the Notts Senior Cup final again but were beaten 3-2 by Newark & Sherwood Utd. With the Millers remaining in the East division for 2023-24, the challenge will be to show that level of improvement over the whole campaign. Previous Meetings

Dean Freeman (CB) Joined Carlton at the start of the 22/23 season after spell at Newark though best-known for four successive seasons at Coalville where he made over 100 league appearances. Won first-team place after a loan at Sherwood Colliery, and has also represented Belper Town, Loughborough Dynamo and Rainworth MW having started his career at Barnsley FC. Lewis Durow (LB) Strong attacking defender has played for Ilkeston Town, Holbrook Sports and Mickleover RBL. Now in his second season for the club, his crosses led to crucial point-gaining goals at Grantham and Pontefract at key stages of last season’s Great Escape. Lawrence Gorman-Stewart (RB/CB) Spent early stages of his career at Nottingham Forest and England U16/18 earning 9 caps and winning the Victory Shield and Montaigu Tournament. Has NPL Premier Division experience whilst at Grantham and Matlock and is currently in his second spell with Carlton where he is approaching 150 appearances for the club. David Adegbola (RB/RM) Young right-sided player with lots of pace. Signed in the summer following a standout season at Radford. Very skillful dribbler, he can play as a winger and defender. YPOTY 22/23. Alex Howes (LM/CM) Winger or playmaker who made a Football League debut aged 17 for Notts County in 2017, later being loaned to Coalville and Tamworth before his release in 2020. Moved to Basford before joining Carlton in late 2021. Scored an audacious lofted goal at Cleethorpes to help Carlton stay up. But did he mean it? Khyle Sargent (RB/RM/CM) Joint-Vice-Captain. Creative engine midfielder returned to the club in 21/22. Utilized in a number of positions in the 22/23 season to cover injuries and did superbly winning Manager’s Player of the Season. Greg Tempest (CM) Formerly at Notts County, Nuneaton & Lincoln City. Most recently at Belper & Gedling Miners Welfare before signing with Carlton in the summer. Six caps for Northern Ireland U21s back in 2013. Zac Hill (CM) Carlton Town youth academy prospect, featured at the business end of last season and looking to carry on with more appearances this term. Joel Daft (RM) Has been in the Carlton Town youth academy, featuring periodically during the 2020/21 season. Has also featured for Clifton All Whites in the Nottingham Senior League. Returned to Stoke Lane in 2019, leading club to best FA Trophy performance (First Round) in 2021/22. County Cup-winning expert, with successes for both Coalville and Carlton in the last six years. Mark Harvey (Joint-Manager) Gained early experience in the dug-out as Assistant at South Normanton and Long Eaton before joining Quorn, where he first joined forces with Brookbanks in 2012 and who he has worked with ever since. Andy Clerk (Coach) Left long-serving job as Gedling Miners Welfare manager in summer 2023, has extensive knowledge of local football scene and is expected to have bright future in management. THE UNTOLD GAME MARTYN GREEN San Marino’s Star Massimo Bonini was considered the best young player in the world in the early 1980s. He had collected a number of youth caps for Italy and impressed their selectors, and was integral to the 1982 Juventus team that won the Scudetto. He was a tireless midfielder, adding bite to Michel Platini’s beauty, and progression to Marco Tardelli’s power. But while his teammate would - famously - score in that summer’s World Cup final, one of the most iconic moments in football, Bonini wouldn’t even be at the tournament. Invited to join the squad, and vocal about the importance of playing for his national team, he was expected to line up alongside his Juventus teammate. The only problem was that Bonini didn’t consider himself Italian. He was from San Marino. And they didn’t have a football team. After beginning his career with Sammarinese club Juvenes, Bonini made the small step up to the Italian fourth tier in 1977, where he joined Bellaria. A good first season saw him make a step slightly higher up the pyramid, to Forli in Serie C. One more step up to Serie B followed, and in a season marked by the Totoneri match fixing scandal, he helped Cesena to promotion. Moving up four divisions in five years is quite a feat, but it got even more impressive for the Cesena man. Instead of lining up in Serie A in the

black and white stripes of Cesena, Giovanni Trapatoni came calling and offered him a much more famous striped shirt. Bonini accepted, and joined an exciting Juventus side. In his first season in Turin, Bonini continued his impressive form. Starting the season as a rotation option, he slowly replaced club icon Giuseppe Furino. Juventus crashed out of the European Cup early on, but as his partnership with Tardelli flourished they hit their stride, and Bonini won the first silverware of his career, the Serie A title. Liam Brady scored the decisive goal.

Rebuffing attempts to join the Italy senior squad, Bonini watched on as many of his teammates became world champions. Over the summer, Trapatoni signed two absolute stars of the tournament, Zbigniew Boniek, and Michel Platini. It took time to balance the side, and Roma won the title, but Bonini was now an important piece of

THE UNTOLD GAME MARTYN GREEN the puzzle. In the European Cup, Juventus reached the final. Bonini played every game. Trapatoni took the shackles off in the following season - at the insistence of Platini - and Juventus flew. Boniek, Platini and Paulo Rossi formed a potent attacking trio, with Tardelli given license to join from deep. Bonini’s role in stabilising the side grew ever more important. He was technically able and tactically adept, but it was his work rate that impressed the most, covering every blade of grass and allowing the attacking talents to showcase their abilities. Such was his role in the team that, after being caught smoking in the dressing room, Platini reassured people; ‘You shouldn’t be worried if I smoke. The important thing is that Bonini doesn’t because he also has to run for me.’ Bonini’s running certainly gave Platini a platform. On their way to the 1984 Scudetto, Platini was top scorer. He also won the Ballon d’Or. Juventus lost just four times, and were the top scorers in Serie A. With a final flourish, they added the Cup Winners Cup, without losing a match. The following season, Bonini finished with a tragic trophy. The Turin side finished 7th in the league as they turned their attention to Europe. The Sammarinese played every game as they romped to the final, and met a Liverpool side who looked

unstoppable. Ian Rush and John Wark were scoring goals for fun, and were joined by the impossibly brilliant Kenny Dalgliesh. The promise of goals and excitement was high when they lined up, at Heysel Stadium. Juventus won, but the result was insignificant. They were presented the trophy in a sombre dressing room. Juventus found more challenging domestic rivals on their return, and a resurgent Milan side, alongside a Diego Maradona-inspired Napoli, provided stiff competition. Juventus and Bonini won the league once more in 1986, but the Sammarinese had moved on by the time the club won it again, in 1990. Bonini moved to Bologna in 1988, but more important discussions were taking place. As he came to the end of a stellar career, UEFA finally gave him the chance to play international football. San Marino played their first ever match in 1990, a 4-0 defeat to Switzerland. That would set the tone for their subsequent existence, but to Bonini, just lining up for his country was a victory. In 1992, he went back to Juvenes, and saw out his career playing in, and for, the country of his birth. When asked why he turned down Italy and waited for the possibility of playing for the worst team in the world, Bonini’s answer was simple. ‘Simply because I am from San Marino, and proud of it.’

CLUB HISTORY THE FORMATION Ossett United was created on 1 June 2018 following the merger of Ossett Town AFC (est. 1936) and Ossett Albion AFC (est. 1944). Both Ossett Town and Ossett Albion had managed to gain Northern Premier League status and maintain that level of football for a remarkable period of time.

The two clubs merged under the leadership of a new board brought together from the two previous clubs. The Club made its new home Ingfield, the previous home of Ossett Town, and used Dimple Wells, the previous home of Ossett Albion, as its Ladies and Academy Team base.

GROUND IMPROVEMENTS With the off-field rollercoaster settling down the Board progressed numerous ground improvements at Ingfield with the replacement of the pitch side barrier and installation of LED floodlights being completed in 2021 before attention turned to improving the changing room facilities which took shape in the summer of 2023 thanks to further grants from the Football Foundation. The extension includes an additional match official room, two offices and a medical room as well as a larger, modern changing room that will become fully operational by the summer of 2024.

The Boardroom has also been strengthened in the summer of 2023 with Dawn Rogers and Kate Hennighan taking their place alongside the eight members already in place.

CLUB HISTORY UP TO NOW... On the pitch, the first year (2018/19) was a remarkable success with attendances significantly increased from what either club had experienced previously, coupled with success on the pitch reaching the play-off semi-final and winning the County Cup, under the guidance of manager Andy Welsh. Following the departure of Andy Welsh a couple of months in to the 2019/20 season Wayne Benn, assisted by Chick Hayward, oversaw two covid hit seasons. Hopes were high after a positive pre-season in 2021/22 with Benn reshaping the squad. The season started well with Ossett United in the top half of the table but a run of only one win in three months saw a change in the dugout at Christmas with Jas Collvier and Mark Ward taking a joint managerial role. The season ended well with the pair unbeaten at Ingfield with seven wins and two draws but away from home inconsistent performances and results saw a ninth placed finish in only the clubs second completed season. Colliver and Ward strengthened the squad throughout pre-season, and despite on paper the squad looking as strong as it ever had, results did not match expectations. Mark Ward resigned in September with Colliver taking sole charge before leaving the club by mutual consent the following month. Grant Black became the clubs fourth permanent manager in October 2022, winning his first game in charge, 2-0 at the eventual play-off champions Long Eaton United and only tasting defeat twice in his first 16 games. Results tailed off as the season ended with the club finishing in 15th place but the management team had a clear plan in place for the type of player they wanted to bring in ahead of the 2023/24 season with their and the clubs ambition being a much higher finish than recently experienced.
