LIVERSEDGE FC WHO PUT US TO THE SWORD TWICE LAST SEASON. WHAT A DIFFERENT STORY IT WAS THIS YEAR, AND WHILST ACKNOWLEDGING IT WAS A PRE-SEASON GAME AND LIVERSEDGE WERE NOWHERE AS NEAR AS STRONG AS THEY WERE LAST SEASON, OSSETT UNITED PUT IN A COMMITTED, ACCOMPLISHED AND IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY WHICH, DESPITE THE 2-1 LOSS, LEFT FANS FEELING POSITIVE AND OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE NEW SEASON.
JAS COLLIVER AND MARK WARD HAVE USED PRE-SEASON WELL IN MY VIEW. THEY KNEW WHAT PLAYERS THEY WANTED AND HAVE RECRUITED WELL USING THE GAMES TO LOOK AT DIFFERENT FORMATIONS AND STYLES.

IT’S BEEN A HUGE SUCCESS IN MY EYES GETTING TO THIS STAGE WITH A FULL COMPLEMENT TO PICK FROM. THE LADS LOOK FIT AND THAT IS TESTAMENT TO THEMSELVES AND ALL THE STAFF WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED. MIDI HAS BEEN UNBELIEVABLE WITH THE GKS EXPOSING THEM TO 121 SESSIONS IN JUNE, THANKS PAL.
TWENTY THREE PLAYERS HAVE BEEN PART OF THE SIX GAMES WE HAVE PLAYED, SO WE HAVE WORKED WITH RELATIVELY LOW NUMBERS THROUGHOUT. IN TERMS OF MINUTES ON THE PITCH WE FEEL WE HAVE MANAGED THAT WELL, LOOKED AT DIFFERENT SYSTEMS, LOOKED AT DIFFERENT PERSONAL IN A VARIETY OF POSITIONS AND WORKED HARD DRILLING OUR GAME PLAN HOME TO THE NINE NEW RECRUITS.
IN THE TEAM THAT STARTED THE GAME VS LIVERSEDGE WE LOOKED A VERY EXPERIENCED NON-LEAGUE TEAM, WE FEEL WE HAVE ADDED LEADERSHIP AND EXPERIENCE AS WELL AS YOUNG, ENERGETIC PLAYERS WHO PLAY WITH NO FEAR, PACE AND FLAIR. WE WANT THESE LADS TO ENJOY THEIR SELVES AND ENTERTAIN THE FANS. NEW MILLS New Mills FC, based in the High Peak of Derbyshire, have continually been at the forefront of organised football in the area. The Club's home ground, regarded as one of the most picturesque in non-league football, is situated opposite the impressive St George’s Church and has a splendid backdrop of Kinder Scout, which is the highest point in the Peak District National Park. The Club’s facilities are quite considerable. Covering seven and a half acres with well over three acres of land, the Club has a floodlit playing arena, an all-weather pitch suitable for a number of sport which is used by local schools and the local community in general as well as New Mills Juniors teams. The game of football has been played in the town of New Mills since 1886 when the Club, originally known as New Mills St George's, first played in friendlies before joining organised competitions such as The North Cheshire League and ultimately The Manchester League. After playing at several locations around the town, the Club moved to their present home of Church Lane in 1922 and this coincided with a hugely successful period in the Club's history as they recorded two Manchester League titles and four Derbyshire Divisional Cup wins. These successes led to average home crowds of around 2,000 and eventually saw no fewer than ten players transferred directly to Football League Clubs. In the mid-late 1980's The Millers enjoyed great success, winning a number of trophies and reaching several Deryshire Cup finals, being victorious on more than one occasion. Former player Ray Coverley was the Manager of the First Team during this time, and he was to eventually move up to become Chairman of the club. Featuring players from New Mills and the immediate surrounding area during that period, the club was already demonstrating that it could become a force at a higher level, competing against clubs with far bigger catchment areas for players and support. The Millers side of the 1980's was one of the most memorable in the clubs history, with the line up still rolling off the tongue of long time supporters. Once Coverley stepped down as Manager the club adopted a policy of appointing from within, with former goalkeeper Andy Bowers taking over for a spell and then prolific striker Alan Peatfield overseeing several seasons in the late 1990's-early 2000's. After guiding the side to two Derbyshire Cup victories and promotion to the Manchester League Premier Division, Peatfield stepped down and was replaced by Tony Rigby who had been on the Management staff at Woodley Sports. The 2009/10 season again saw The Millers as bridesmaids for the second successive season as this time Newcastle Town grabbed the solitary promotion place to The EvoStik League. The Club enjoyed success in The FA Vase and reached the last sixteen for the first time in its history before The Northern League’s Norton and Stockton Ancients spoilt the Wembley dream. Shortly after the FA Vase exit Tony Hancock resigned from his post, with former Woodley Sports and Mossley boss Ally Pickering taking over the reigns in a caretaker role. The club advertised the Managers job at the end of 2009/10, and an impressive array of Managers applied and were invterviewed for the role. Caretaker Boss Pickering was successful in obtaining the post on a full time basis and 2010/11 proved to be a case of third time lucky as New Mills finally achieved their goal of promotion to The Northern Premier

NEW MILLS League when they won The North West Counties Premier Division. Winning the first seven games of the season the squad set the pace from start to finish before being presented with the Championship trophy after the game against local rivals Glossop North End on Easter Monday. The team also reached the North West Counties League Challenge Cup Final but failed to achieve the double after losing narrowly to Winsford United. It was a successful season off the field as well as the Club achieved the prestigious FA Charter Standard Adult Club status which was an excellent recognition for all the hard work that has been put in by everybody connected with the Club. The first team’s debut season in The EvoStik Northern Premier League was tough after being placed in Division One South, the eventual position of ninth represented a respectable finish. 2012/13 proved to be another roller-coaster ten months, after the club were moved into the Evo-Stik Division One North. After a mixed start to the campaign Pickering stepped down and was replaced as Manager by his number two Roy Soule, who had an immediate impact on the squad and brought in some new faces to add to the quality that was already in place. The Millers were defeated at Curzon Ashton on the final day of the season and that meant that they missed out on second place in the league and therefore had to face Trafford in the playoff semi-final. Trafford had already beaten the Millers home and away that season,.2014/2015 proved tough for New Mills FC as the Committee cut back on the players expenses and focused on developing youth players through the Development squad successfully. The Millers finished in the relegation positions in the Evo-Stik League, but were spared relegation on a technicality due to restructuring of the league pyramid. Sadly Manager Soule tendered his resignation in the summer and was initially replaced by ex-Stalybridge Celtic Manager Keith Briggs. Briggs was never to take charge of the club in a competitive fixture as just weeks after his appointment he accepted a coaching role at Sheffield United and his Assistant Andy Fearn took over the reigns. Fearn was to remain in post for just a few months when, after losing every game while he was in charge, he resigned from the job. Former Glossop North End Manager Garry Brown took over, bringing his assistant Paul Williams with him. Although they had enjoyed success at Wythenshawe Town the previous season they were unable to change the Millers form and New Mills AFC hit the headlines in national press for all the wrong reasons. The club were winless in their 42 league matches that season, and mustered just three draws along the way which gained national media attention. The Millers management team had a challenging couple of seasons during Covid 19 and during last season with a with a young vibrant squad in place 2021/22 saw success back at Church Lane finishing 3rd in the league and just missing out in the play off for Promotion. Dave Birch and Mike Norton have retained the majority of the squad with a couple of new additions everyone is hopefully for a successful campaign at the top end of the table once again for 2022/23.

At the time of writing, the Lionesses have just secured the nation’s first international trophy for 56 years. We all hope it inspires girls and boys to start kicking a ball, to follow their dreams, and to achieve the greatest success that sport can offer. It’s been a long road since football was unbanned half a century ago, with the Women’s Super League only becoming fully professional in 2018. But the inception of the women’s game was rocky from the start. In 1881, nine years after the first men’s international match between England and Scotland, two Scottish theatre entrepreneurs decided that the idea of women playing football was worth exploring. For all the egalitarian arguments in organising a women’s football match, they were in the business of making money, and believed that with women that was exactly what they would do. They had no idea what they were letting themselves in for. The first step was to find two sides. The candidates were obvious, given the burgeoning success of the men’s game: England and Scotland. Alec Gordon, who had been present at an international in 1880, decided that the same kind of excitement could be generated from female sides of each nation. Next, players were needed. Tricky wingers today are often described as balletic, so perhaps it
was fate that the selection would take place from dance schools. The England side was made up mostly of dancers from Lizzie Gilbert Juvenile Ballet Company, while the Scotland side was put together from those in the house troupe of the Princess Theatre. There was a preferred candidate for location too. Glasgow was a growing football hub, and supporters were fanatical. If the match was going to make money, this was the place to do it. However, unforeseen by the organisers was the opposition to the idea of women playing football, so securing a field on which the “Lady Players” could showcase their talents proved impossible. Gordon got onto his contacts in the entertainment industry, and eventually a venue was offered, in Edinburgh. So the players travelled, and the first ever women’s game took place at Easter Road. To increase interest, and to play to the politics of the time (in which a vocal minority pushed for women’s rights), Gordon claimed the match had been organised “for the purpose of popularising football as a feminine pastime”. While he may have been disingenuous, some of those involved genuinely saw it as an opportunity for progress. Helen Matthews was a women’s football pioneer, and a suffragist, who was involved in the fixture. Only, her name doesn’t appear on the team sheet. To avoid the misogynistic dangers of the game, all players assumed identities.

The game went ahead without a hitch. Although the England side started the brighter, it was Scotland who proved their dominance. Lily St. Claire scored the first ever goal in a women’s football match, Louise Cole and Maum Rimeford followed suit soon after, to give the hosts a 3-0 win. The “curiosity”, as it was described, was reported as far afield as New York and Sydney, and a second match quickly arranged, and this time it would take place just outside Glasgow. Unfortunately, the media attention merely served to increase the intensity of the opposition. A large group of spectators were well behaved for almost an hour into the second match before the cordiality broke, and a rope separating the pitch from the fans was cut. A large scale pitch invasion ensued, in which players retreated into a nearby horse-drawn bus. The police struggled to keep the mob from the bus, and they tore up stakes and fencing to throw at the players. Eventually a driver was found and the players were driven off at speed. The newspapers universally condemned the violence, but still attacked the players. “Public feeling has demonstrated against the unseemly exhibition in such a manner that the authorities are now frowning down the innovation” reported the Leeds Mercury, while the Manchester Guardian blamed players who were seeking “to gratify vulgar curiosity by taking part

in what is termed a ‘ladies’ football match”. Clearly, the women’s game had a long way to go to get recognition, but, if nothing, else, the first step had been taken. Despite the rocky road women’s football has walked, including its half-century prohibition, the scenes this summer have been beyond what even it’s most ardent Victorian supports could have imagined. CLUB HISTORY THE FORMATION Ossett United was created on the 1st June 2018 following the merger of Ossett Town AFC (est. 1936) and Ossett Albion AFC (est. 1944). Both Ossett Town and Ossett Albion had managed to gain Northern Premier League status and maintain that level of football for a remarkable period of time.
EARLY HISTORY The two clubs merged under the leadership of a new board brought together from the two previous clubs. The founding directors were John Chidlaw (OA), James Rogers (OT), Emma Chidlaw (OA), Dawn Rogers (OT), Lee Summerscales (OA) and Lee Broadbent (OT) forming the new Board with support from Phil Smith as CEO. John Chidlaw took on the role of Chairman for the first season. The Club made its new home Ingfield, the previous home of Ossett Town, and used Dimple Wells, the previous home of Ossett Albion, as its Ladies and Academy Team base. On the pitch, the first year (2018/19) was a remarkable success with attendances significantly increased from what either club had experienced previously, coupled with success on the pitch reaching the play-off semi-final and winning the County Cup, under the guidance of manager Andy Welsh. Off the pitch things were not as successful with a number of resignations and board changes and some challenging financial issues to deal with following the merger. By the end of the 2018/19 season, Phil Smith had taken on the mantle of club chairman following a number of board changes. Wayne Benn took up the managerial reigns in late 2019 following a poor start to the 2019/20 season, however, that season was ended abruptly in March 2020 with the onset of a global pandemic known as Covid 19. The season was null and voided. Off the pitch there were more troubles for Ossett United in November 2019 as

a significant and unprecedented court case, dating back to a tackle in 2015 when Ossett Town were playing Radcliffe Borough, was lost with United facing legal and damages costs amounting to £135,000. Fortunately, the club received a generous loan from two of its closest supporters to avoid the club going into liquidation (at worst) or selling the Ingfield ground (at best). The start of the 2020/21 season started late due to the ongoing pandemic and virtually finished as soon as it had started with only eight league games having been played by United. This time the season was curtailed rather than null and voided and meant a second season had gone unfinished. Off the pitch Rogers and Smith swapped roles due to Smith's work commitments and Rogers took on the role as Chairman, a role he had previously held at Ossett Town. 2020 also saw the club declare Dimple Wells as surplus to requirements and made arrangements to surrender the lease making Ingfield the single home of the united club.
2021/22 Last season saw many changes at Ossett United both on and off the field. After a strong start to the Pitching In NPL East season a run of only one win in three months saw Wayne Benn and Andy Hayward leave the club in December. Jas Colliver and Mark Ward were appointed to re-ignite the season and strengthen the squad which they did from day one. The duo saw the club go unbeaten at home with 7 wins and draws however the away form continued to be in consistent. Off the field new dugouts were installed, before the erection of a new pitchside barrier followed by the upgrading of the floodlights to LED to bring the facilities to a high standard. Colliver and Ward have spent the close season working hard to retain players from the squad as well as bringing in reinforcements to strengthen the squad further as the club looks to improve upon the ninth placed finished in 21/22
