Uplift Women’s Network Comes To MOPS Offers More Than Just Playdates

By Kate Quesada Campo Family YMCA Child Life sometimes brings trials and tribulations as one strives to overcome those obstacles that might come their way. A new group at Campo Family YMCA called Uplift Women’s Network empowers women by building them up spiritually and fostering a sense of community with the understanding that an issue does not have to be faced alone.

In November 2017, Heather Simpson, J.D. founded Uplift Women’s Network and leads it.

This faith-based organization came into fruition because the Lord placed it on Simpson’s heart. It consists of more than 20 diverse women of all ages, cultures and denominations. The intent of it would be to bring women together through prayer, encouragement and friendship.

Simpson shared how she feels in regards to being the leader of it.

“I feel inspired by everyone who contributes as they build each other up in a positive and effective way,” Simpson said.

The goal of this group would be to see God lifted up in the women. To add, Simpson wants to see people grow in their faith and let them know they do not

The organization started meeting at Campo Family YMCA in April of this year.

Simpson also mentions how the group fits perfectly within the YMCA’s mission.

“Overall, I feel blessed that the door opened for our group to meet here at Campo Family YMCA,” Simpson said.

“We also see us growing further with our partnership with them too and excited for the future as well.”

School District Offers Adult Technical Certifications With Grant Opportunities Whether you are just embarking into adulthood or looking to change or advance your career, you may be surprised to learn that Hillsborough County Schools offers technical certifications and adult education at affordable rates. There is a program for you at one of many convenient Hillsborough Technical Colleges.

At Aparicio-Levy Technical College, students can choose from a variety of programs that will set them on the path to success. What is the best thing? Dr. James Goode, site principal wants to emphasize that students can be on their way, “To a career in a year or less with no loans to repay. Faces of Courage is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides day outings and overnight camps for women, children and families touched by all types of cancer and blood disorders. All programs are given free of charge.

Faces of Courage was founded by Peggy Sherry in 2004. It is a Tampa based nonprofit, but it serves cancer survivors from all over the country.

Faces of Courage is able to provide services for free thanks to tireless volunteers and support from the community.

Volunteers such as Larry Brooks provide essential services. Brooks, who lives in Sun City Center, became involved with Faces of Courage about eight years ago.

He works in the kitchen at every camp that is held.

Brooks said, "I volunteer because I see what the camp means to the survivors who attend. At one of the camps, a

woman with cancer gave me a hug and thanked me for being there." Brooks added, "While the emphasis at the camps is certainly on fun, it also provides support and focuses on developing a strong positive attitude towards recovery and good health management. Many of the volunteers are survivors as well, and when they tell a camper they know what they are going through, they really do know."

Sherry said, "No one can understand the cancer journey until they have heard the words 'You have cancer.' When these survivors can get together, leave their wigs in the cabin and openly talk about their feelings, worries and hopes, it is very healing."

Faces of Courage has several upcoming camps for women and children. It is hosting two Adult Women's Camps on August 17-19 and September 14-16. It will host Santa's Workshop Weekend for children ages 2-12 the weekend of November 30 to December 2. Registration for camps opens approximately five weeks before camp.

Camps cost approximately $250 per camper. To offset the cost of the camps, Faces of Courage holds events such as ‘It's Too Hot Music Fest’ on Sunday, July 15 and a Top Golf event on Sunday, July 22.

For more than four years, the staff at Just Cuts for Guys have been sprucing up the hair of FishHawk’s male residents. This month, owners Dawn and Bryan Vansant are welcoming their son Edward to the team as the business’ seventh stylist.

Just Cuts for Guys, which opened its doors on FishHawk Blvd. in March 2014, offers haircuts for men and boys. It is a family business and Dawn is not only the owner but also has been a hair stylist for 13 years.

“With 13 years of experience Dawn not only understands the industry, she is also actively involved in all aspects of the business ensuring that the consistency and quality control are kept to her standards,” said Bryan, who has lived with his family in the FishHawk area for more than 10 years.

The Vasants are excited to welcome their son Edward to the team following his graduation from barber school last month, with the idea of him possibly taking over the business in the future.

“Edward has worked as a receptionist at our store since we opened,” said Bryan. “He has watched and participated as we have built this business. This led him to barber school. He will be a valuable addition to our team. He has proven to be a quick study and takes his work seriously.”

The business’ other team members have already built up a following of clients in the FishHawk area.

“Owning and running a business is very demanding,” he said. “When the community expresses their appreciation by supporting your business when there are so many options out there, it makes all of the hard work worth it.”

Registered Voters In Hillsborough Have Three Methods To Vote: By Mail, Early And On Election Day And Every Vote Counts

In the United States, voting is a right. However, in order to exercise this right, every voter in Hillsborough County must be informed and must know where to vote and how to do it. There are three methods- Vote By Mail, Early Voting and Election Day Voting. In order to vote, you must be registered by July 30 for the Primary which is set for August 28. You must be registered by October 9 for the General Election which will be held on November 6.

When you register, you are asked to select a party. That would be either Republican or Democrat or No Party Affiliation or one of the minor political parties.

Florida is a closed primary state.

This means that for the Primary Election, your ballot will reflect the party that you have selected. In other words, you vote only for the candidates from your party as well as non-partisan races such as Judge (County and Circuit) and School Board.

In the General Election, your ballot is based upon where you reside.

You can view sample ballots for both the Primary and the General Election at www.votehillsborough.org.

ELECTION DAY VOTING Polling Places or Precinct, noted on your Voter Registration Card, are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. You can bring your sample ballot with you and use it while you vote.

Whichever method you choose, remember your vote counts. “On Election Day, voters must vote in the polling place assigned to their precinct.

Remember, Election Day is your last chance to vote. Because the majority of voters will have voted during the Early Voting period, we do not expect lines in the Election Day polling places,” said Latimer.

Annual Hillsborough County Drinking Water Quality Reports Now Available

Copies of Hillsborough County’s annual water quality reports for tests performed in 2017 are now available in print and online. The reports include information about where Hillsborough County customers’ drinking water comes from, what’s in it, and how safe it is. The reports also contain helpful consumer information and important telephone numbers for customers interested in finding out more about their water quality. An online map tool allows customers to find their water quality report by entering their address.

Hillsborough County Public Utilities operates 11 community water systems.

Each system has its own report. To see the reports online, visit HCFLGov.net/WaterQualityReport.

All customers will receive notice of the available water quality reports through either their mailed bill or e-bill.

Weird, Wacky And Wonderful Holidays- JULY 2018 Fried Chicken Day * Shark Awareness Day * Moon Day* Tequila Day * Tiger Day Did you know that there are an abundance of daily holidays and special days every month? Some are immersed in tradition, while others may be silly, bizarre, unique, special or inspirational. Unofficial Holidays are not traditionally marked on calendars but are celebrated by various groups and individuals. Some are designed to promote a cause or to recognize historical events not recognized officially, while others are fun holidays, generally intended to just be humorous. So, in the midst of our busy lives, maybe consider taking time to enjoy some of the entertaining but lesser-known holidays throughout the year.

A new month has begun - so let’s welcome July with a few fun facts. July is most famous for its fun-filled-patriotic holiday on July 4th, where we celebrate our Country’s independence. But, did you know the month of July was named after Julius Caesar by a decision of the Roman Senate in 44 B.C., as July was the month of his birth? It is also one of the hottest months of the year for the entire Northern Hemisphere. Yes, we're officially in the dog days of summer. So, grab your old record player and sing along to Hot Fun in the Summertime by the funky trailblazers, Sly and the Family Stone while you plan some other fun celebrations to get through this muggy month.

Let’s start our month celebrating the crisp, juicy, finger-licking-good fried chicken. Friday, July 6 is National Fried Chicken Day where we all can indulge in one of America’s favorite food. You may think that Colonel Sanders invented fried chicken, but it was actually the Scottish who were the first to deep-fry chicken in

Thanks to some feel-good movies such as Jaws and Sharknado, the shark has gained quite the killer reputation. However, many sharks are endangered species.

Statistically, humans kill 100 million sharks a year, yet the odds of being attacked by a shark are 1 in 11.5 million.

Study Abroad Gives A Whole New Meaning To Credits As more students are now attending college, more students are also taking the opportunity to study abroad. I recently had the chance to travel to Italy for four weeks through a study abroad program in my college. During my time in Italy, I got to travel to 11 different cities all while taking a class and earning credit.

Study abroad allows students to learn both inside and outside the classroom. However, I learned more outside the classroom by living in a completely different culture, immersing myself in the history within each city and being able to see worldfamous monuments taught me more than a textbook ever could. I was able to go inside churches that were hundreds of years old, climb to the top of the Florence Cathedral and tour centuries old cities.

Even just being abroad for one month, I gained a lot of independence as I was forced to figure out how to live in another country without the comfort of my parents being with me. The money, language and the way of life is me in Ro onti all very different. the abroad program was my ability to experience places that an average tourist wouldn’t. On a free weekend, my roommates and I took a train to a place called Cinque Terre. It is made up of five towns on the coast that people can hike through or take a train to each town. We hiked some of the trails, took a boat tour and had a beach day. The views were unbelievable and each town had its own unique character. Not many people knew about Cinque Terre, but it made me realize that sometimes it’s the small towns that create the best experiences. If I weren’t on a study abroad trip, I don’t think I would have ever gone to this place and it has now become one of my favorite spots.

Overall, studying abroad taught me so much. I am now more self-sufficient. I met new people; learned some Italian and gained a new perspective of the world.

The most important thing I learned while abroad is to keep an open mind.

Local JROTC Students Awarded Brandon TOPSoccer Offers Program For Medals By Alafia River Chapter Of DAR Children With Disabilities

By Michelle Colesanti TOPSoccer is a communitybased program for young athletes with disabilities. Any child over the age of 5 with a mental or physical disability is welcome to join and will be able to enjoy a relaxed and fun soccer atmosphere.

The TOPSoccer program is organized completely by volunteers. It has been sponsored and hosted by the West Florida Flames Soccer League (WFFSL) since 1998. This sponsorship, along with the sponsorship of various individuals has allowed the program to be offered with no cost to the families of the athletes.

Fred Englehardt was on the Board of Directors of Brandon Youth Soccer League, but was recruited by the founding members of TOPSoccer to help them get uniforms, shin guards and balls for the athletes. “It has been over 20 years now, and I love every minute of it,” he said.

A large range of mental and physical disabilities can be accommodated. Each program is specially designed for the athletes in the program. Instead of being sorted into teams by age, children are sorted based on disability, so that each team can work together and have fun.

In order to keep the program light and fun, TOPSoccer does not keep score or keep track of team standings. Teams usually hold practices once a week, and the season lasts from mid-September to

All of these policies are TOPSoccer’s way of trying to stick to their original mission statement: “to foster the physical, mental and emotional growth and development of America’s youth through the sport of soccer at all levels of age and competition.”

The Brandon TOPSoccer program was recognized as both the 2010 and 2015 ‘TOPSoccer Program of the Year’ by the Florida Youth Soccer Association, awards which the administration was very proud to have received.

Registration for the upcoming season will be every Friday and Saturday of August, beginning August 10. On Fridays it will take place from 6-7:30 p.m., and on Saturdays it will be from 9-11 a.m. Registration will take place at the WFFSL clubs located at 3104 S Kings Ave. in Brandon. All players will be required to show a copy of their IEP form when registering.

Any adult volunteer coaches or high school students in need of service hours are welcome to come to one of the registrations for more information about volunteering.

Several young soccer players from the Brandon area recently got the chance of a lifetime: a trip to Spain in 2019, and the opportunity to represent Team USA in the International Danone Cup. This is the second year in a row that Weston FC, a non-profit youth soccer club based in south Florida, has won the tournament. The team caters to athletes ages 7-19, and over a thousand players are currently involved in the organization.

In order to win the trip, the team had to win the Danone Cup, which was hosted by ESPN Wide World of Sports at Disney. They beat the Wellington Wave in the finals.

“Going into the finals, both teams were really nervous, so we both started off a little shaky, but after we got a goal, we kept getting more.

When the ref blew that whistle, it was really hard to comprehend what just happened… we won!” said local Brandon player Caroline Ohme.

It will be a major cultural learning experience for the girls, since most of them will be young teens when they go to Spain. They will get to see what Spanish life is like, try new foods, and perhaps learn a bit of the Spanish language.

Since the girls on the team are scattered around Florida, this will be an excellent team bonding experience. “I’m pretty excited to get to see them and explore Spain with them,” said Ohme. Traveling together will allow the girls to grow closer as friends and teammates.

This all-girls team has a male counterpart as well, and the boys team won too. The girls were coached by Tim Miller, and the boys

Safe Tips For When The Skies Light Up...

July is approaching, and with its arrival come the festivities that surround the Fourth of July. Many pet owners may already be familiar with the fear and anxiety that lightning and thunder from summer storms can cause in a number of pets. This fear of loud noises can become so intense that some pets become frantic and even destructive. Loud fireworks also can have the same effect. Along with the deafening noise of fireworks, there are also the cookouts and outdoor parties that can lead to stress for our pets. Some animals can develop vomiting, diarrhea or anorexia, as well as behavioral problems, such as urinating or defecating in the home, chewing up furniture or personal items and even breaking windows and doors.

I have several suggestions that may help during these stressful times. If you know that your pet will be upset by a large party or noisy fireworks, consider boarding him or her at your veterinarian's office, where he or she will be in a controlled environment. If you prefer that your pet stays at home, you can set up a calm, safe area or allow the pet to stay in a quiet part of the house where guests are not permitted. For pets that tend to get frantic or destructive, it is best to confine them in a sturdy crate where they cannot hurt themselves or your property. Some animals feel like the sky is falling when they hear they hear thunder or fireworks

and do best in a small area with four walls and a roof to provide some sense of security. For this reason, you may want to cover the pet's crate with a sheet or set the crate up in a walk-in closet. If you are able to stay and sit with your pet, you can help to soothe and calm him or her, as well. And then there are those animals that may be so out of control that your veterinarian will have to prescribe a sedative. This, however, is a last resort, since you could end up with a ‘drunk,’ yet still very frightened pet.

Make sure your pets are safe as well as comfortable during any parties you host. As most parties and barbecues usually end with their own displays of fireworks and sparklers, make sure that both pets and small children are kept at a safe distance. If you are planning on setting up a fireworks display, be sure dogs are kept on leashes and cats are kept indoors.

Proper disposal of fireworks is very important. Some can remain hot after they have been ignited, which can cause severe burns when handled. Also be especially cautious of the types of fireworks that are mobile once ignited. Using common sense and being aware of possible dangers when preparing for your celebration can keep stress to a minimum and allow everyone-including your pets-to enjoy the festivities and make it a memorable and safe celebration.

Brandon Rotary Presents $92,000 In Donations To Local Charities

Members of the Brandon Rotary Club gave more than $92,000 to local charities at a check presentation event on May 29.

Hundreds of needy residents are better off this month thanks to the work of a local group. The Brandon Rotary Club held its Annual Check Presentation in late May giving out more than $92,000 to area charities raised at events held in the last 12 months.

The charities, nominated by club members, included Family Promise of Brandon, Women’s Resource Center, ECHO, The Outreach Clinic, Rotary’s Camp Florida and the Brandon Rotary Club Fund - Scholarship Fund. In addition, the club will also award six $1,000 scholarships to local area high school graduates at the end of this month.

“Service to the community is one of the objects of Rotary and the club has had a tremendously successful year,” said Rotary President-Elect Deborah Meegan, who is also Executive Director of the Brandon Outreach Clinic.

The money is raised at the club’s three main fundraisers which take place throughout the year.

According to Meegan, Brandon Rotary members have raised more than two million dollars for local charities since the group’s inception.

“In addition to raising money, we carry out several services projects a year in the community,” she said.

“Community service is one of the objects of Rotary which encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest.”

The group, which currently has 58 members, meets Tuesdays at 12 Noon at the Rivard-Simmons Rotary Event Center at 3007 S. Kings Ave. with a variety of speakers and social events are planned throughout the year.

“We welcome all service minded individuals who want to make a difference in our community,” said Meegan.

“Joining Rotary is a great opportunity to network, meet new friends and learn more about our community.”
