The Big Red Barn Brings Fresh Produce To The Riverview Community

While driving down Interstate 75 in Florida, one might notice a bright red building near Exit 250. That building houses the locally owned farmers market in Riverview called The Big Red Barn. When individuals come here, they will feel like they’re home. Under new ownership, The Big Red Barn reopened July 1. Foundation Coffee Co., Kona Ice and Rack City Ribz came during the opening. Owners Chris Phillips and his wife Courtney Phillips loved the building and knew they could use their experience in produce to bring the business to life. The square footage of this two story building equals 8,000 sq. ft. The first floor serves as the main shopping area and that would be 6,000 sq. ft. On the other hand, the total square footage of the second floor would be 2,000 sq. ft. People can sit inside or outside in picnic tables too. “We want this place to be a community and a destination for families to bring their children and connect with others,” Chris said. The Big Red Barn will carry more than 300 conventional and organic produce from local growers. Prices do vary and fresh produce does get delivered everyday, seven days a week. Individuals will discover a wide range of cheeses and Amish products too. People can also purchase milk, fresh bread and other locally sourced items as well such as Sunshine Canning. They can be found in Bradenton,
Florida and use fresh ingredients without any preservatives in their artisan jams and more. In the future, The Big Red Barn plans to service local restaurants or any other places here that would like fresh produce. This will also be a pickup for wholesale people too. Individuals can also place a special request and The Big Red Barn will order it for them. It will also act as an events space as well. For more information, visit www.bigredbarnflorida.com. Chamber Hosts Teachers At Annual Teaching To Excellence Breakfast By Kate Quesada
The annual Greater Riverview Chamber Teaching to Excellence breakfast will take place at The Regent in Riverview on August 4. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.
The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) is asking for help welcoming local teachers back to school next month. For more than 10 years GRCC has hosted educators from 23 Riverview area schools at its Teaching to Excellence breakfast and sponsors are needed to donate supplies and more. The event, which was originally created by Dr. Earl Lennard who lives in Riverview, will take place on Friday, August 4 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. According to GRCC Executive Director Tanya Doran, guests will be treated to a delicious, hot breakfast, entertaining speakers, networking opportunities and raffle prizes for the teachers, in addition to being able to pick up gifts at multiple sponsored Teacher Supply Stops. Each elementary, middle and high school with a Riverview address, both public and charter, is invited to send its new
teachers along with its principal and teacher of the year from the previous school year. “Each year teachers leave this event with a big smile on their face and an even bigger bag of supplies
on their arm,” said Doran. “To many of these teachers this bag means the world to them. For every team in that bag, it is money they did not have to spend out of their own pocket to support the children of our community.”
This year Doran is expecting 250 new teachers in addition to the principals and teachers of the year. Tickets are available to GRCC members for $25 each. “The event is successful thanks to the incredible community support of our GRCC members, their representatives and our local residents who are happy to have this opportunity to give back,” said Doran. The chair for this year’s event is Kendra Wilson with Suncoast Credit Union, Riverview and co-chair is Dixie Brady with Pilka & Associates, P.A. Many different sponsorship opportunities are available to GRCC members, from the Honor Roll to the Valedictorian Level, each offering logo display at the breakfast, recognition during the program, ads in the planner given to attending teachers and tickets to the event. Donations of paper and cash are always appreciated and ads in the planner can be purchased separately. During that time, Blanchard had a close friend whose brother became paralyzed from the waist down after a terrible car accident. Blanchard’s injury put things into perspective for him. He was not able to play the game that he loved while he recovered. He then thought of the man that was now paralyzed, who would never be able to walk again. After hosting a golf tournament at his club to help raise money for his friend’s brother’s medical expenses, he saw a piece of equipment called the Para Golfer. It is a golf cart that can help people who are injured or disabled stand and play golf. It became his mission to purchase a Para Golfer unit for his golf course, so that people with disabilities would be able to play as well. “When I saw how happy and elated her brother was to be able stand up and play golf again, it tore at my heartstrings,” said Blanchard. “I know how hard it was for

According to Mark Twain, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” My husband Phil and I recently returned from a two week Tauck Rhine River cruise on the beautiful MS Grace, taking us from the city of Basel, Switzerland up to Amsterdam, Netherlands. After the cruise, we made plans to spend a few days in London, one of my favorite cities. Since our return, everyone asks me how we could travel to Europe, especially to London, given the recent terrorist attacks that seem to take place regularly. These attacks are unpredictable and frightening, but
should they keep you from visiting Europe? Practicing vigilance should be something that you do no matter where you travel whether in the U.S. or overseas. Always pay attention to your surroundings. Sometimes this gets lost in the wonder of seeing famous landmarks and sites for the first time. Common sense says to keep your passport in a safe place such as your hotel/ship safe; don’t carry it through the streets as you sightsee or shop. Make sure you have a scanned copy of your passport in your suitcase. I always keep a picture of the front page on my phone too. Ladies should carry their purses with the strap diagonally placed over the shoulder so that it is harder for someone to grab it. Don’t carry all of your money with you. Separate your money
and credit cards. Backpacks are a great option if you are carrying cameras and other heavier items, but make sure that your money, credit cards and ID’s are not easy targets if someone were to come from behind and attempt to get into your pack. If you are a man, do not keep your wallet in your back pocket so that someone could easily grab it. Our travels took us to London just one week after the attack at the London Bridge and Borough Market. The U.K. elections had just taken place and there was much turmoil within the United Kingdom. Our plans were already made and despite our fears, we decided to continue on. I am glad that we did. It is a lot different when you are looking at things from the inside out. Just as in the U.S., I could immediately sense the
resiliency of the residents. I had trepidations about riding the London Underground, but people going about their daily business made me realize that life goes on. No one seemed to be giving in to the fears that they must face daily. I was happy to see that there were plenty of other Americans and foreign tourists that chose to visit despite recent events. The acts of terrorism that have become so commonplace, especially in Europe, is something unpredictable, but if you look realistically at the statistics, you have a better chance of being struck by lightning near your home on a hot Florida afternoon. If your dream has always been to visit this part of the world – to see the Dutch Masters painted by Rembrandt at the Riiks Museum or to visit the Alps in Switzerland or Austria; then go!

Area 5 School Superintendent Sherrie Sikes Retires After 43 Years Of Service After 43 years working in the Hillsborough County Public Schools, Sherrie Sikes will retire as Hillsborough County School’s Area 5 Superintendent. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, but raised in Brandon, Sikes is a friendly woman who is passionate about children and the schools she has grown to love. Sikes is a product of the Hillsborough County Schools having attended Mitchell Yates Elementary, Horace Mann Middle School and Brandon High School, where she graduated in the class of 1970. She then went on to attend the University of Tampa (UT) and received her Bachelor’s degree. While attending UT, she was Miss University of Tampa and captain of the cheerleading squad for three years. She went back to college two more times in her career to get her Masters in Guidance, and then a degree in Administration. Sikes career is expansive and commendable. She started as a Physical Education teacher at Brandon High where she won the Teacher of the Year award. She then went on to be a guidance counselor at Plant City High School. When both Bloomingdale and Durant High Schools opened, she was part of each school’s inaugural staff. She was the chair of the Guidance Department and Assistant Principal at Bloomingdale High School. At Durant High School she was the Assistant Principal of Curriculum and eventually Principal. Sikes headed downtown to take

the General Director of Secondary Education position, but then moved back to become the Superintendent of Area 5. Sikes stayed active in each of the schools she served. This year alone, she made over 400 visits to her schools visiting with the teachers and students. A student’s hug could make her day. When asked if there was a moment in her career that stood out she replied, “Yes, at Durant High School when I was the APC Assistant Principal of Curriculum, we beat every high school in the county with the highest HSCT scores.” When asked her thoughts on retirement, she said, “It’s exciting, but sad leaving the students, teachers,
secretaries, bus drivers, custodians.” Not only has she enjoyed a successful career, Sikes is married to Dan and has two lovely daughters. According to Sikes, her oldest daughter Krista and youngest daughter Julie
are the best gift she has received. She also has beautiful granddaughter Zie, who is Julie’s daughter, that she loves very much. Sikes had nonstop praise for all the amazing staff in her schools, in particular her principals. She said her faith in God has led her through life, and will continue to lead her. Her future endeavors will include travel, running, which is one her hobbies, and spending time with her family, especially her precious granddaughter Zie. For info on Hills. Pediatric Dentist Puts Focus On Creating Supportive And Educative Environment

Located in the Boyette Executive Center, the offices of Carr Pediatric Dentistry offer a “topnotch” team that are quickly becoming a staple in the community due to their supportive and nurturing approach to providing quality dental care to children and infants. “We have a lot of kids that cry when they are done because they don’t want to leave,” Dr. Natalie Carr-Bustillo said. Originally from Argentina, and after living in East Tennessee for a bit, it was in Apollo Beach where Dr. Carr-Bustillo truly grew up and the Tampa area where she thrived. “[Florida] is just home to me.” Her love for the Riverview area shines through at Carr Pediatric, where Dr. Carr-Bustillo strives to make the experience for her patients a positive memory. “We have iPads kids can play with, toys, and books to read,” Dr. Carr-Bustillo spoke of her strategy, “We also have
stuffed animals with teeth so that they can brush them.” However, these objects aren’t meant to distract the children from the sounds of dental work, but to make the experience appear less frightening to the eyes of a child. “While we give the parents a tour of the office, we’ll leave the child playing in the open room, watching other cooperative children so they don’t sense the fear,” Dr. Carr-Bustillo stated, “It gives [the child watching] a sense of ‘okay, if these kids can do it, so can I.’” Although Dr. Carr-Bustillo believes that exposing the child to the sounds of dentistry is an integral part for the young patients, Carr Pediatric strives to promote the education of dental health for both the patients and parents. “I love when parents come in with a list of questions,” Dr. Carr-Bustillo beamed, “While we speak to the parents about the medical history, we focus on educating the kids on good oral hygiene.” Dr. Carr-Bustillo also believes that the key to the business’ success is an outstanding team. “We have a lot of meetings where we just talk about how we can be better and provide the best service in the industry.” Carr Pediatric Dentistry is located on 11936 Boyette Rd. in Riverview in the Boyette Executive Center. Healthy Meals During Summer Break & Changes Ahead Of 2017-2018 Season Students To Receive Healthy Meals During The Summer Break
To make sure students receive nutritionally balanced meals this summer, Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) Student Nutrition Services (SNS) are now offering several opportunities as it rolls out its Movin’ Meals summer food service program. For the past six years, SNS has been bringing food into communities through its Movin’ Meals “food buses” providing thousands of meals. According to school officials, five retired and renovated district school buses have been selected to deliver meals into neighborhoods offering breakfast and lunch until Wednesday, August 2. Students can eat on the air-conditioned buses. The purpose of the annual summer program is to reach communities where children may not have access to a neighborhood school or park. The buses will stop at a number of locations throughout the area, including some serving the Brandon and Valrico Lithia communities. Hillsborough County Public Schools also offers the Extended School Year program, providing students breakfast and lunch at no cost at schools that provide summer school programs. Monday

Hawthorne Health & Rehabilitation Center hosts a monthly support group for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and caregivers on the third Thursday of every month. The next meeting will take place on July 20 from 2-3 p.m. in the Media Center. The speaker will be Mary Blackinton, PT, EdD, GCS, CEEAA, associate professor at NOVA University. Topic: Balance and Walking. Physical, speech and occupational therapists will discuss treatment for issues related to balance, swallowing, talking and other skills that can be affected by Parkinson’s Disease. Hawthorne Health & Rehabilitation Center, located at 851 W. Lumsden Rd. in Brandon, is a skilled nursing facility with inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs including speech, physical and occupational therapies. Hawthorne also hosts a dementia support group in the assisted living facility, as well as past meetings for those dealing with strokes, diabetes, low vision and other diseases. The Parkinson’s Disease support group is free of charge and open to those who have been diagnosed with

Calls To Artists Have Been Issued By The The Tampa Bay Lightning Puts Out A Call SouthShore Regional Library For Upcoming Shows To Area Artists The SouthShore Regional Library in Ruskin has issued two Calls to Artists for the Crawford Gallery juried shows. Area artists who are interested in having their artwork featured in the gallery are encouraged to apply. The first call is for Painting and Mixed Media. Those selected will have their artwork on display in the gallery during the months of September and October. An artists’ reception will be held on Thursday, September 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The second call is for Photography. Those selected will have their artwork on display in the gallery during the months of November and December. An artists’ reception will be held on Thursday, November 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The Calls to Artists will run through July (for both shows). Interested artists can pick up an application at the Information Desk at the SouthShore Regional Library. Interested artists should complete the application and include a few samples of their artwork on CD or USB drive. Each artist should also include a one page document which includes biographical information with an artist’s statement about their work. According to Principal Librarian,
Cheryl Wolfe, “The library displays art for the purpose of providing the community with an educational, cultural and aesthetic experience. The Crawford Gallery is optimal for two-dimensional media. All art pieces will be hung on carpeted panels. No nudes or controversial subject matter is accepted.” The current exhibit at the library is the 6x6 Exhibit. The exhibit features the artwork of 20 area artists and features a variety of media including acrylic, oil, watercolor, photography and Zentangle. Wolfe said of the current exhibit, “This generated a lot of interest in part because of the wide array of artists and topics. They include abstracts, nature and animals. A few artists submitted pieces under a theme.” The current exhibit is an excellent example of the SouthShore Regional Library’s engagement with the community and the arts. Wolfe said, “The library helps connect communities. In our community, there is a strong interest in the arts. Bell Creek Academy Football Joins SSAC, Gears Up For Fall Season By Tamas Mondovics

Bell Creek Academy (BCA) tuition-free public charter school, located at 13221 Boyette Rd. in Riverview has been enjoying the spotlight thanks to the recent success of its various academic and athletic programs. The school opened its doors four years ago and has just graduated its first class of seniors, the majority of whom are ready to attend area universities this fall. BCA has also made great strides athletically, including the Panthers football program, which is now gearing up for its second year under the direction of program head coach Jason Smith.

The Panthers were also pleased to announce the decision to join the Sunshine State Athletic Conference (SSAC) facing a number of talented teams in the two-division conference. Smith emphasized that the program is in its building stages, and is gearing up for the new season, but in the wake of a 2-7, 2016-2017 record the players are ever more committed, dedicated and ready to learn. “We have learned a lot last year and have plenty to work on, but we are building the program and have every confi-

dence in our success,” Smith said, adding that while the team is learning the basics and fundamentals, the players make the process exemplary. “This is the best group athletically I have seen, coupled with no behavioral issues. These kids are respectful and teachable. I am proud of them and thankful for a chance to coach them.” With a current roster of 30 plus players, and since the program does not receive funding from the school, the Panthers are relying on and are seeking local support and sponsors to cover the costs associated with each game. The Panthers are also appreciative
