Armwood Hawks Armwood: The Hawks are out for revenge after losing for the second straight season in the 6A State Championship to Northwestern (Miami). They are off to a great start in 2019, dismantling Plant 38-3 in their opener.

Nobody, not even the Hawks, thought the score of that game would be so lopsided. The much anticipated matchup between the two most dominant programs in Hillsborough County usually comes down to the final possessions of the game.

Junior Cam’ron Ransom is the starting quarterback for Armwood this season. The lefty dual-threat QB went five for seven for 188 yards and two touchdowns in the air and also ran for a touchdown. Star junior receiver/running back Charles Montgomery has four receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown in his Armwood debut. The Bloomingdale transfer played several positions for the Bulls last season, including at quarterback, where he filled in for an injured team-

mate and won the first two playoffs games in the school’s history.

Last season, he ran the ball 121 times for 864 yards and 13 touchdowns and also caught 16 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns. Montgomery has several Division 1 offers, including Ohio State, Alabama, Bowling Green, Florida International, Iowa State and Maryland. He adds another big-play threat to an already loaded spread offense.

Other key players include Under Armor All-American, junior receiver Agiye Hall, who had a 78-yard touchdown pass against Plant, senior 3-star running back Eric Wilson, senior offensive lineman and Georgia State University commit Jeff Miller and senior defensive tackle Clyde Pinder Jr., to name a few. The sky is the limit for Armwood this season.

They will make a deep playoff run like they always do and will compete for a state title. It’ll be championship or bust as usual for the Hawks.

Bloomingdale Bulls The Bulls are coming off their best ever season, in which they won their first two playoff games in school history and had an overall record of 11-2. They reached the regional finals for the first time, losing to football powerhouse Venice. The Bulls were very competitive against Venice, leading the game at the half. Bloomingdale is quickly becoming one of the elite football programs in Hillsborough County after being one of the worst for several years. This is partly due to Coach Max Warner who had great success in his three seasons as head coach, improving every season. Warner recently left to the program to take over as the Quarterbacks Coach at Bowling Green and has been replaced by Jake Coulson, who was the defensive coordinator for Bloomingdale last season. Coulson had great success in his first year, leading a defense that gave up less than a touchdown per game and did not give up a point until the fifth game of the season, while posting six total shutouts. This 2019 Bulls squad is full of talented players that are committed to play college football. They will return

key players such as senior quarterback Lance Alderson, senior running back Dominic Gonnella (North Dakota State commit), senior defensive tackle/tight end Quinton McCoy (Illinois commit), senior lineman Conner Pouchie, senior wide receiver and defensive back AJ Moss (North Dakota State commit), senior linebacker Gabe Jones (Davidson commit), senior wide receiver Maurice Frost, Jr. (Navy commit), junior inside linebacker Jamarion Neal and junior linebacker/running back Wa’myron Howard. The Bulls, in recent years, have run a pass-happy spread offense, boasting several talented skilled position players that have gone on to play at the next level.

They will need to find their identity on offense, with the offensive line losing several key players from last season. Coach Coulson thinks that team speed will be a major strength for the Bulls. They will have their work cut out for them this season, as they have one of the toughest schedules in Hillsborough County, in which they will have to face Armwood, Durant, Plant, Plant City, Tampa Bay Tech and Lakeland.

Brandon Eagles Brandon: This is a rebuilding year for the Eagles under second-year Head Coach Antonio Brown.

Sophomore Anthony Florence is the starting quarterback this season. He is a transfer from Mississippi, and this is his first season playing as a QB after playing receiver before. Coach Brown said that Florence’s major strength is reading defenses. In his first game as QB, he threw for 450 yards and two touchdowns in Brandon’s pro multiple offense.

Other key players include senior running back/safety Jaden Exume, who led the team in tackles last season; senior linebacker/offensive lineman Asante Watson; junior transfer from Mississippi and nose guard Cedric Ellis; junior defensive lineman Kenric Rosario; and senior three-year starter, receiver/defensive back/running back and backup QB Jalen Morris.

Coach Brown believes that his team’s biggest weak-

ness could also be its biggest strength, with the team being extremely young and inexperienced while having only six seniors on the roster. The many freshmen and sophomores on the roster can develop and grow together at the same time and, hopefully, rejuvenate the program. Brown said that his team has embraced this idea this season and they have been getting better week in and week out.

He would like to see his team maintain drives this year and not turn the ball over as much and play more physical on the defensive side of the ball, and also be more of an attacking defense as opposed to sitting back and allowing the other team to be comfortable.

“Wins and losses are a measuring point for a lot of teams, but for us we want to just finish and grow together,” said Brown.

The team’s motto is, “One team, one family.”

Durant Cougars Durant: The Cougars are looking for a bounce-back season after going 3-7 in 2018. They are led by Head Coach Mike Gottman, who is in his 17th season at Durant. The offense will be run by senior quarterback and team captain Sean Williams, who started last year as well. Williams was efficient in the Cougars’ dominating 42-6 win against King in their opener. He threw for one touchdown and also ran the ball four times for 27 yards and two touchdowns.

Coach Gottman said that the team captain is a smart, gritty, quick dual-threat QB that uses both his arms and legs to get the job done. He is a proven leader as well as a winner. About 10 different players carried the ball in game one for this run-heavy flexbone triple-option offense that uses some of the same principles as Army and Navy.

Other key players include junior guard/defensive tackle and team captain Wyatt Lawson, junior linebacker and team captain Josh Cannon, junior safety/corner/receiver Aashton Kirkland and

senior defensive end Bradley Guasto. Coach Gottman believes that his team’s major strength will be their chemistry. He thinks that their kicking game has improved and can make a difference this year.

Senior kicker/punter Edgar Posadas is playing football for the first time, but has potential with a strong leg. They will have to overcome key injuries to starting tight end Nate Brennan and starting linebacker Luke Rawlins, who is out for the season with a torn ACL that was suffered in the Lake Gibson preseason game.

Durant has a tough schedule this season, having to face 2018 playoff teams such as Kathleen, Bloomingdale, Lakeland and Plant City. The rest of the games on the schedule are very winnable for the very young and fairly inexperienced Cougars.

Assuming that they lose those four tough games, which they are most certainly capable of winning, they will most likely win five or six games in 2019, improving on last season’s record.

East Bay Indians East Bay: The Indians are coming off of a very good 7-4 2018 season. Ninth-year Head Coach Frank LaRosa has brought stability to the program. Senior Jahkese Cruz will start at quarterback for East Bay in the 2019 campaign.

The strong-armed quarterback will be tested this season, as East Bay has one of the more challenging schedules in the county, matching up against several teams that made the playoffs last season. LaRosa thinks highly of Cruz’s leadership, saying that he is very unselfish, dedicated to improving his craft and is a team player.

The Indians are a multiple spread to run team that has several key players on both sides of the ball, including senior linebacker/guard Jaden Santos Lopez, senior cornerback/receiver Logan Webb, senior running

back/safety/linebacker Kenlin Jones, senior Keyaun Kinney, junior long snapper/defensive end/tackle Garrett Hines and senior receiver/tight end Johnathan HalaufiaMartinez.

LaRosa thinks that his team’s strength is their chemistry and unity. The Indians will have to overcome their lack of experience, as they return with only three starters on offense and three on defense.

The program took a huge step forward in 2018, winning four games in a row to end the season on a high note. The Indians look to continue the momentum in 2019.

“We approach every opponent the same,” said LaRosa. “Our focus is to improve ourselves so that we can give the best effort controlling what we do.”

Lennard Longhorns Lennard: The Longhorns are led by fourth-year Head Coach Matt Kitchie, who is looking to build up the football program. Sophomore Gavin Henley will take snaps at center for Lennard this season. Coach Kitchie likes Henley’s command of the offense. They aren’t going to put too much pressure on the young quarterback, primarily running the ball behind a very big and talented offensive line and setting him up with plays to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers. This spread offense likes to control the ball while heavily utilizing the running game.

Last season they had the #5 leading rusher in the state of Florida in running back Tino Hunt, who had 1,607 yards and 16 touchdowns with an outstanding 7 yards per carry average.

Hunt averaged 160 yards per game in 2018, and the offense will run through the senior this season as well, giving him the bulk of the carries.

Other key players include junior running back Quay Smith, junior receiver Dax Corr, sophomore running back/receiver Jahki Davis, junior defensive lineman Jhalin Hobbs, senior linebacker Davian Papius, senior strong safety/cornerback Josh Culpepper and senior cornerback Xavier Mitchell. The Longhorn’s most talented player might be Michael Rankins. The 6 ft. 5 in., 285pound senior right guard is committed to play college football for Georgia Tech. Coach Kitchie would like to see improvement in his defense this season. The team’s primary goal is to improve each day.

Lennard opened up against top rival East Bay and won 140. Coming into the game, East Bay had a 13-1 overall record against Lennard, so the Longhorns were very motivated for this game, and they would love to turn that series around in the coming seasons.

Newsome Wolves The Wolves are looking for a bounce-back season under second-year Head Coach C.J. Yockey. Newsome was in a transitional phase in Yockey’s first season as the helm, after replacing 12-year Head Coach Ken Hiscock.

The Wolves’ offense is tricky to stop, as they run a hybrid system between a spread offense and a wing-T offense, primarily keeping the ball on the ground, but giving multiple looks. Junior quarterback Nick Felice will take the snaps at center this season and lead the offense. Felice was the starting QB for the JV team last season before winning the starting varsity job in spring football. Coach Yockey says that his offensive line will be the strength of his team, returning four of five starters from last season. Senior Matt Rainey will play center, senior Kyle Hoerner will play at right tackle, senior Peyton Solarczyk moved from defense to the O-line, senior Thomas Heeps will play right guard and Cade O’hehir and Matt Deckert will compete for the left tackle

spot. The Wolves will use a three-headed rushing attack with senior utility man Deandre Perez, who played both running back and wide receiver last season and is their best returning skill player, senior fullback/H-back Landon White and sophomore Jason Albritton will have the bulk of the carries. Senior tight end Kyle Sellers will be a great target for Felice this season. Senior defensive lineman Patrick Lemelin, junior defensive end Jeremiah Ross, sophomore linebacker Caden Huffman, senior linebacker Fisher Sweeney and junior free safety Jack Arnone will lead the defense. They will open at crosstown rival Bloomingdale to start the regular season. This rivalry is regarded as the biggest game of the year for both schools even though it is early in the season. The Wolves don’t have a bye week, they will play 11 straight games. Look for an improvement on last season’s 4-6 record, especially in the back-end of the season where they have some very winnable games.

DEHYDRATION AND EXERCISE HEAT INJURY IN THE YOUTH ATHLETE Summer in Florida does not mean youth athletes get a break from sports.

Temperatures climbing to 100 degrees plus unacclimated or under-hydrated middle and high school students, can be a recipe for disaster. It is important, as parents, to not only make sure your athlete is prepared to play in this environment, but to also recognize the warning signs if they are not.

The beginning stages of exertional heat illness are exercise-associated muscle cramping, usually in the calf or hamstring. This indicates your child should be pulled from practice or a game to hydrate with water, electrolytes from a sports drink or salty snack, and rest. Gentle stretching and massage to the area can also be beneficial. As suggested by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the recommended fluid intake should be 20floz of water/sports drink 3 hours before exercise and up to 2 hours post-exercise, to correct for losses. When fluid loss through sweat starts to exceed fluid intake, dehydration begins to settle in.

Dehydration signs include thirst, irritability, headache, weakness, dizziness, and decreased performance.

If left untreated or unnoticed, dehydration and exercising in the heat can cause an elevated core body temperature, which leads to fainting, collapsing, dizziness, confusion, and vomiting.

If core body temperature continues to climb, exertional heat injury or heat stroke can be a concern. Collapse, seizures, loss of consciousness, hot/wet skin, and severe muscle pain are common symptoms. This is now a medical emergency and 9-1-1 should be called.

Be aware of your youth athlete this summer and ask them these 5 important preventative questions: 1. How much water/sports drink are you drinking before, during, and after practice/games?

2. When you notice that you’re excessively sweating, are you making a conscious effort to drink more than usual?

3. How much sleep are you getting the night before?

4. Are you incorporating healthy carbs and salty snacks before and after practice/games?

5. Are you taking frequent breaks in the shade or cooler area?

Riverview Sharks Riverview: The Sharks are off to a great start this season, defeating Blake 37-26 in front of the Riverview home crowd in their opener. They are led by third-year Head Coach William Mosel. The spread offense that they run will ride on the arm and legs of star sophomore dual-threat quarterback Stazion Gage.

Gage had a tremendous game against Blake on August 23.

He completed nine of 18 pass attempts for 136 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball 22 times for 155 yards and three touchdowns, giving him an astounding five total touchdowns and 291 all-purpose yards.

Gage watched last season and learned, and he spent the offseason getting familiar with the offense. Coach Mosel says that Gage is very cerebral and has a natural ability to make plays. Look for him to have a breakout season if he can stay healthy with all the hits that he takes from running the ball.

Other key players include junior safety/receiver Isiah Dolby,

receiver Colby Thornton, junior receiver/safety Kadeem Robinson, safety/cornerback Devin White, junior defensive end/tight end James Moore, senior Jacob Poirot, Colin Hussey, sophomore receiver Yonlys Pena, junior receiver Jaden Ramos, receiver Ricky Lundstrom and senior slotback/defensive end Jordan Schell.

Mosel said that a lot of different players contributed in the 'team victory' and he thinks that his team’s strength this season is their chemistry. The Sharks are poised for a bounce-back season after a tough 2018 campaign. They will improve on last season’s 3-7 record as they have a very winnable schedule, only having to face one playoff team from last season, but they will have to be better at closing out games. Coach Mosel wants his team to take it one game at a time and just think about executing plays.

Seffner Christian The Crusaders are coming off their best season in the school’s 11-year football history, in which they went undefeated in the regular season, making a deep playoff run and eventually losing to 2A-powerhouse Admiral Farragut Academy 20-7. They went 11-1 overall under fourth-year Head Coach Travis Puelo.

Seffner Christian Academy is poised to make another playoff run this season, but they will first have to get through a tough regular season schedule. They are led by senior Navy commit and quarterback Isaiah Knowles. The duel-threat quarterback was an All-State selection last season and threw for 2,160 yards with 34 touchdowns and just five interceptions while rushing for 275 yards and five touchdowns on 52 carries (5.3 avg).

Coach Puelo raves about Knowles’ football knowledge, game-planning and preparation, as well as his leadership and work ethic. Knowles has been a team captain for the last three seasons.

Senior captain Justin Stubbs is the team’s leading returning

rusher with 790 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. Junior tight end Michael Trigg was an All-State selection last season. He is a special athlete and has an offer to play football and basketball for USF, among other schools.

Senior mic linebacker Tristan Kistler is considered the quarterback of the defense; he led the team in total tackles with 133 and 10 tackles for loss last season. He is the top academic player on the team and will potentially play for an Ivy League school.

Junior Niko Fowler anchors down the offensive line, which Coach Puelo believes is the strength of his team. Clay Wedin has a lot of potential as a 6-6, 275-pound ninth-grader at the left tackle position.

They are a multiple-look spread team, but they will run first to set up the pass behind their big O-line, which averages around 270 pounds. Seffner Christian definitely has the talent to make a run in the 2A division.

Spoto Spartans The Spartans are in rebuild mode, and are looking for stability and continuity under first-year Head Coach Cassius Crawford. Crawford has been with the program for 11 years of the school’s 12-year existence — he is the fourth head coach for Spoto in the last four seasons. East Bay transfer and senior quarterback Brandon Gaines leads the offense. Coach Clay says that Gaines is a student of the game and is also mobile and multifaceted. He fills the specific needs of the pro-style offense that they run. Senior offensive lineman/defensive tackle Anderson Aricy has potential to be a college prospect as the season goes on. Other key players include senior offensive lineman Jacob Wilson, junior receiver/slot back Curtis Thomas, junior receiver Cai’re Anderson and senior running back/linebacker Darius Gaffney who may be the fastest player on the team. It is tough for a program like Spoto to grow these days when talented players can easily flock to the upper-echelon programs like Armwood, Tampa Bay Tech and Plant. Coach Crawford believes that his players and coaching staff are committed to the school

and the program, and that they have the mindset to get better every day, change the culture of the football program and build something special. He believes that if the team has success, they will be able to entice more players to stay at the school instead of transferring. He would like more players to sign up for the team so that some players won’t have to play both offense and defense, as well as special teams. According to Crawford, it has been challenging to get players cleared to play with the new system that the district has created, changing the registration process from paper to online with regard to the athletic participation packet. Some of the students have limited access to the internet, making it difficult for them to sign up. This is one of the many challenges that they face with the new electronic system that other programs may not face. They are currently working out the kinks of the new system. The motto of the team is the three C’s: commit, consistency and compete. Coach Crawford wants to change the culture of the football program, and he is well on his way.

Strawberry Crest Chargers Strawberry Crest: The Chargers are off to a great start in Phillip Prior’s first season as head coach, as they matched last season’s win total in week one by defeating Leto 20-6. The rebuild of the program is underway.

Senior Caleb Goodson is the starting quarterback for Crest. He had a good game against Leto, completing six of seven pass attempts for 63 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball 10 times for 45 yards and a touchdown. Prior believes that Goodson can manage their offense and make good decisions to protect the football, and likes the QB's willingness to learn. The Chargers run a pro-style offense and are committed to running the football.

Other key players include senior offensive lineman Ben Gude, senior lineman Jonah Spivey, senior offensive line-

man Jose Gonzalez, junior defensive lineman Sebastian Fernandes, junior linebacker Jake Craig and junior receivers Kadin Durgan and Hunter Wilkinson. Senior running back DJ Brannon rushed the ball 10 times for 62 yards and a touchdown, while adding one reception for eight yards against Leto.

Prior thinks that his team’s strength will be his front seven on offense and defense. The young, fairly inexperienced team will have to make quick adjustments on the fly as they have had to learn new offensive and defensive schemes a couple of weeks before the season started. The Chargers have one of the tougher schedules in Hillsborough County, as they will have to face Kathleen, Lakeland, Plant City, Durant and Bloomingdale. Prior wants his team to compete each game and each rep, and improvement will come along the way.
