The Tampa Walk is getting so big and with so many people wanting to walk on Josh’s team an event that is local and easier to get to would be wonderful.” Although the event will feature baseball related activities like home run derbies for both kids and adults, a pitching contest and a coach dunking area, another reason Goodwin and Andre are excited about the walk is the way it will showcase the FishHawk Youth Sports Complex and all the sports it hosts. “This community space is so unique,” said Goodwin. “The walk will Story Continued On Page 14

Every year, according to the American Heart Association, more than one million babies worldwide are born with a congenital heart defect (CHD). Twelve years ago, FishHawk resident Josh Andre was one of them and now he is working hard to raise money to help kids like him. On Sunday, October 23, the FishHawk Youth Baseball (FYB) organization is hosting the Heart Health Day Walk a community event at the FishHawk Youth Sports Complex featuring a one-mile walk around the facility, bounce houses, super slides and family fun including face painting and balloon animals, music, food and more. According to Stefanie Goodwin, Assistant Fundraising Chair for FYB, this is the first in what they hope will be a trend of semi-annual community events intended to bring the community together and raise funds for important causes. “We decided recently that we want to have some sort of charitable event

every season for a different cause and this charity was an easy first choice as it is personal to one of our own,” said Goodwin, who also has a 12year-old son who plays with FYB. All proceeds from the event will be split between FYB and Andre’s American Heart Association team Strike Out CHD. Andre’s mother, Stephanie Andre is also FYB Communications Chair and has been very involved in putting the

Lithia Blueberry Farmers Are Featured On RFD-TV’s New Series FarmHer

Lyna Knight and Susan Weicherding both left successful corporate lives and instead of retiring, started fulfilling second careers as blueberry farmers in Lithia. Knight owned and operated United Title Insurance and Weicherding was a tax consultant for Ernst & Young. Courtesy FarmHer, Inc by Marji Guyler-Alaniz

Susan Weicherding (L ) and Lyna Knight (R ) are long-time friends who embarked on a second career as blueberry farmers in Lithia. They were recently featured on RFD-Tv’s new series, FarmHer.

Recently, the pair and their farm, Lyna Berry Farm, was featured on RFD-TV’s new series, FarmHer. The series focuses its camera lens on women in agriculture through the eyes of photographer and TV host, Marji Guyler-Alaniz. The show takes viewers on a journey through a day in the life of many diverse women, telling their story and aiming to create a dialogue that highlights the importance women play in agriculture. Knight and Weicherding have been friends since 1999. Becoming a farmer was originally Knight’s idea. “After researching and visiting other farms I convinced Susan it was a good plan,” explained Knight. “We started farming part time in 2004 because we loved being outdoors and wanted to put that love to use with our land doing something that could bring an income and enjoyment,” added Knight. The pair grow their blueberries and sell them commercially to Wish Farms. They then open their farm to

the public for several weeks in May for you pick. “We take great pride in farming a successful crop, learning from trial and error and listening to other growers that share their knowledge. We physically do all the work,” said Knight. They received the CARE Award for Best Management Practices. “To be part of the FarmHer series was a tremendous honor and proof that gender should never dictate what career path you take or when you take it,” added Knight. FarmHer airs on Fridays at 9:30 p.m. with an encore on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at 9:30 p.m. The series will continue through the fall. For a full program schedule and more information on RFD-TV, please visit rfdtv.com. Knight said, “Susan and I are proud to have taken an idea, love of the land, and put it to work giving us a life that is a dream come true. We work very hard not taking anything for granted and hope to share the fruits of our labor with everyone.” You can like Lyna Berry Farms on Facebook and find out when you picks are scheduled.

Role Playing Fantasy Group, Amtgard Barony Thrives at Local Park

By Nick Nahas

Jessica Edler and her husband, Sean were playing baseball with their son at the park when they noticed people in interesting garb playing with foam swords and shields. The family’s curiosity took over. They introduced themselves to the group, and later found themselves joining them the next Sunday.

Goose (tall in blue and red), Bolt (baseball hat), Evil Russ (black and purple) and Vive (light grey and purple) poised for a skirmish.

Danielle Smith (left) and Breanna Edler doing some arts and crafts.

Amtgard is a Live Action RolePlaying (LARP) community focusing on medieval and fantasy sports and recreation with chapters all over the world, according to Edler. “It’s a lot of fun, when you think of it as your inner-kid going out there with a foam sword and playing,” she said. “It’s just something different to do to stay active, and I’m an artist and photographer, so it’s another outlet to be creative.” The Barony of Falling Fire, in the Kingdom of Neverwinter has been meeting every Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tony and Bertha Saladino Park since 1995. Activities include combat with foam swords and shields for those 14 and older, and arts and crafts. Others just come to hang out and socialize with the

group, as well as referee the action. Players are encouraged to expand their role within the group, and apply for office. Edler, also known as Lady Jae, is currently Regent of the chapter. “We welcome everybody,” she said. Every player at the park has a persona that they portray. Are You On Track To Meet Your Financial Goals?

October is Financial Planning Month. And now that you know it’s Financial Planning Month (just in case you didn’t know before), why not take the opportunity to determine if you’re on the right path toward meeting your financial goals? Consider taking these steps: • Identify your goals. To know if you’re making progress toward your goals, you first have to identify them. Of course, you’ll have a variety of goals in life, such as helping pay for your children’s college educations. More than likely, though, your most important long-term financial goal is to build enough resources to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. But we all have different ideas for how we want to spend our retirement years. Some of us may want to stay close to home, volunteering and pursuing our hobbies, while others want to visit the vineyards of Bordeaux or explore the pyramids of Egypt. So, name your goals and, as much as possible, put a price tag on them. Once you know about how much your retirement is going to cost, you can create an investment strategy that may ultimately provide you with the income you will need. • Don’t underestimate your cost of living. Even after you’ve identified some of your retirement goals, and estimated their costs, you still haven’t developed a complete picture of your future cost of living. You also need to take into account other potential major expenses, such as health care. Once you’re 65, you’ll get Medicare, but that won’t cover all your medical costs – and it might cover only a tiny portion of those expenses connected with long-term care, such as a nursing home stay or services provided by a home health aide. A financial professional can help you explore specific methods of deal- ing with these types of long-term care costs.

• Locate “gaps” – and work to fill them. After you’ve had your investment strategy in place for a while, you may see that some “gaps” exist. Is your portfolio not growing as fast as it should to help you reach your goals? If not, you may need to review your asset allocation to make sure it is aligned with your risk tolerance and portfolio objective. Do you find that you own too many of the same types of investments?Thisoverconcentrationcould be harmful to you if a downturn affects one particular asset class, and you own too much of that asset. To help prevent this from happening, be sure to diversify your dollars across a range of investment vehicles. Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against all losses. • Protect yourself – and your family. Saving for your ideal retirement is certainly a worthy goal, but you have other ones – such as providing for your family in case you aren’t around, or if you become ill or incapacitated and can’t work for a while. That’s why you will need adequate life insurance, and possibly disability insurance, too. Your employer may offer you both these types of coverage as an employee benefit, but it might not be enough – so you may want to explore private coverage as well.

Stein & Vine Is The Local Friendly, “Pub”

By Nicole Heubusch

The Stein & Vine team.

Adorned with a red "PUB" sign on the storefront, the simple façade of Brandon's The Stein & Vine is contrasted by the warm, welcoming interior. Known to local patrons as the “friendly neighborhood pub”, The Stein & Vine has been a staple in the community since opening its doors in late 2012. Ty and Lacey Mathis opened The Stein & Vine almost four years ago after wishing they had a local place where they could find craft food, beer, and wine. They had no idea how popular The Stein & Vine would become, and how quickly it would happen. “When we opened in 2012, we didn’t really advertise. All of our business came from word of mouth. We’re grateful for the community’s support, and wouldn’t be here without it,” said Lacey. The Stein & Vine expanded in May of 2015 and it’s still as bustling as ever. “We attribute a lot of our success to our staff. We’re very lucky to have an amazing staff that cares as much about this place as we do. We appreciate everything our staff does,” Lacey added. You can find craft beer from all over the world at The Stein & Vine but Ty and Lacey make sure to keep the focus on

celebrating local offerings, including those from Coppertail, Hidden Ale Springworks, and Cigar City Brewing, along with other Bay Area favorites. When the pub first opened it was popular as a place to grab a craft beer or glass of wine, but patrons quickly discovered that the kitchen's offerings of uniquely crafted food dishes is what truly made The Stein & Vine stand out. As regulars know, the menu has two sections, “the usual suspects” that include local favorites and a rotating menu that is inspired and crafted daily The ‘usual suspects’ offers dishes such as the "Juicy Lacey", a burger with a cheese-filled patty (grab extra napkins!) and the famous Stein & Vine tater tots. In addition to serving its community with food and drinks, The Stein & Vine enjoys helping local charities. On October 7th, you can help The Stein & Vine support the Brandon Ballet for the 2nd annual Beer for Barres event held at The Barn at Winthrop. For more information, visit http://brandonballet.org/. You can view the daily menu changes on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/TheSteinandVine or on their website at http://www.thesteinandvine.com/. The Stein & Vine is located at 827 West Bloomingdale Ave. in Brandon and opens daily at 12 noon. For more information call 655-4786.

PDQ Brandon Serves Up Fresh Food, Fast, Gives Back to Community

By Tamas Mondovics

While there is no shortage of great restaurants in and around Brandon, for many residents there is that one, a favorite place that just hits the spot every time, let it be breakfast lunch or dinner. PDQ, a relatively new, Tampa based fast casual chain of chicken restaurants is just one of those places, now boasting of seeing a large number of repeat guests who enjoy fresh food, served fast. Owned by MVP Consulting, PDQ was founded in 2009 by Bob Basham and Nick Reader. Five years later, the chain has expanded, to 54 locations in eight states, the first in Tampa opened in 2011. Proud of taking the helm as Operating Director of PDQ’s Brandon location,134 S. Gornto Lake Rd., Jamie Hine spoke highly of his restaurants success and community involvement since its opening in the fall of 2014. “We are doing very well,” Hine said adding that in step with PDQ’s motto of “Just Made, Better” guests are enjoying the tastiest, freshest, made-from-scratch hand-breaded chicken tenders, made-to-order sandwiches, hand-tossed salads, hand-cut fries, hand-spun shakes. Sweet treats also include a variety of cookies; fresh baked, of course. To ensure quality, the restaurant has no microwaves. The chicken served is 100 percent natural and never frozen. Meals are complemented by a great variety of special sauces and dressings all made in-house, every day. Besides fresh cut fries, PDQ offers blueberry coleslaw and apples slices served with toffee dip. Restaurant guests can enjoy their meal inside, choosing to sit at brightly colored booths, tables, high-tops, several spots at the counter or enjoy outdoor seating under a

For an extra personal touch at the drivethru window, guests are greeted by a real person taking the order not a speaker. Hine emphasized that aside from good food, PDQ wants to continue to be good neighbors as well. “We love giving back to the community,” he said. “Organizations such as schools, businesses and church groups are all welcome to schedule family fun nights at the restaurant. We will donate a portion of the proceeds back to their organization.” Hines specifically mentioned that the first Monday of every month is named Military Monday, which on that day, gives members of the armed forces 50 percent off the entire check. PDQ Brandon is open 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m, seven days a week. Counting on his repeat guests, Hine mentioned that the restaurant has a simple menu, but one that is evolving, and said, “As you come back, do look forward to new menu items to be added in the near future.” For more information and menu visit www.eatpdq.com.

County Code Enforcement Focuses On Mosquito Control During Workshop To fight the spread of the Zika, local and federal health officials have been busy with tracking, testing and studying the virus as well as training and educating healthcare professionals and the public. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (DCD) the already infected mosquitoes— the same mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya viruses—are aggressive daytime biters and can also bite at night. The agency added that Zika can be passed through sex from a person who has Zika to his or her sex partners and as of now, there is no vaccine or medicine for Zika. Under the direction of Public Works Director John Lyons and Code Enforcement Director Ron Spiller the workshop provided code officers training to identify and effectively remove potential mosquito breeding sites. The effort is closely supporting a statewide initiative, and for a good reason. According to a press release from the office of Florida Governor Rick Scott, as of September, 2016 there are more than 93 cases of locally acquired Zika in Florida. Scott said that an additional $10 million, for a total of $36.2 million, in state

funds is to be spent solely for Zika preparedness and prevention in the state. “Everyone must continue to take precautions by dumping standing water and wearing bug spray so we can protect pregnant women who are most at-risk for the Zika virus. The good thing is that mosquitoes typically only travel a few hundred feet from their breeding sites so following some basic steps outlined by the Florida Department of Health can go a long way: •Drain water from garbage cans, house gutters, pool covers, coolers, toys, flower pots, buckets, watering cans, kiddie pools, and any other containers where rainwater has collected. •Discard old tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots and pans, broken appliances, and other items that may collect water. •Clean out rain gutters and downspouts regularly. •Empty and clean birdbaths and pet water bowls at least once or twice a week. •Protect boats and vehicles from rain with tarps that do not accumulate water. •Keep swimming pools in good condition, and maintain chlorination. How Can Your HOA Use Your Newsletter To Promote Community Involvement? Typically, most homeowners associations (HOA) provide residents with a community newsletter. It can be weekly, bimonthly, or even monthly, as long as it provides a source of communication. It is one of the most effective ways an HOA can communicate with residents about sponsored activities, upcoming events, or just general community news and updates. If you feel that your attendance levels are low, there might be a lack of awareness about ongoing events. In that case, here are a few simple ways to get residents excited about reading their HOA newsletter.

Promote, Promote, Promote

Promote all your events. Whether a community garage sale, a networking event, a movie night, or even a big holiday event, residents won’t show up if they don’t know something is happening. Create a calendar section in your newsletter that includes a recap of last month, so residents can see what they might have missed, and add all the events for the upcoming month.

Provide HOA Updates And Board Decisions

Is there something big happening with the HOA board? Did you get the approval for pool renovations, or to

plant those new trees that residents wanted? Whatever it is that’s going on with the board, your residents might be interested in knowing. Provide the information on board meetings too, when and where, in case residents would like to attend.

Contests

Contests are a great way to get the community involved. It could be something fun like a newsletter crossword puzzle, or even have residents take a picture of something in the community to send in for next month. Contests are especially helpful when trying to promote an event. Give away tickets to the event, or a prize during; that’s a good way to ensure a higher attendance.

Get Residents Involved

Allow your residents to have a voice in the newsletter. Ask for them to share ideas and activities for the newsletter, address their complaints in the newsletter, or even recruit a few residents to write a guest article. If you have any tips for promoting community involvement with your HOA newsletter, or any news from your HOA that you want published in the Osprey Observer, send them to nicoleh@ospreyobserver.com to be featured in an upcoming HOA article.

It's time to make the RIGHT choice for your community! McNeil Management's team of highly trained professionals is ready to manage your HOA by minimizing your investment of time and effort while maximizing results.

Dave And Buster’s, iFly & Carvana Add To Exciting News For Bass Pro Area

By Sharon Still

Anchored by Bass Pro Shops and Top Golf, the Estuary, a mixed-use entertainment, retail and medical office project located adjacent to I-75 off of Palm River Road is abuzz with activity and may quickly become a hub of entertainment, dining and shopping. The most recent announcement causing a stir of excitement is Dave and Buster’s, a national arcade restaurant dubbed as a destination to eat, drink play and watch sports under one roof. The venue, with a location in Orlando, offers a variety of games from Pac-Man to Skee Ball and dance revolution to the latest video games and more. The 40,000-sqft.-facility also will offer a full liquor bar with dining options including appetizers like wings and calamari to full entrees such as ribs, steaks, seafood, salads and everything in between. Closing is scheduled for mid-December on the 5.86acre parcel adjacent to Bass Pro Shops on the north side. Also located on the north side of Bass Pro Shops will be Carvana and Home 2 Suites by Hilton. Carvana is revolutionizing the car buying industries as a completely online used car dealership where users shop, finance and trade cars through its website. Tyler Roberts, Director of Retail Services for Roberts & Associates Southeast, could not report anything about the type of facility that would be built and said, “We are working on permits at this time.” Home 2 Suites by Hilton has a scheduled closing of September 30, according to Roberts and construction is

expected to start soon after. Home 2 Suites is a newer brand for Hilton and there currently are 100 locations and more are popping up all over the United States, Canada and Mexico. The stylish suites are designed with work space and kitchens for business travelers’ convenience and comfort. A site plan is in the works for a

25,000-sq.-ft. retail strip that will house restaurants, small shops and other retailers. “Given the area will be a destination for entertainment, we anticipate high-end retailers in this space and not your typical strip mall tenants,” said Roberts. He added that square footage rates are anticipated to be in the mid-$30 range. Still available are four additional freestanding outparcels which Roberts says they may consider stripping out for multitenant usage anchored by restaurant users. There also is a 2.12-acre parcel north of the proposed Dave and Buster’s available that is undetermined. “We are currently talking with and trying to get signed several complementary users such as restaurants and specialty retail

stores that offer the potential to drive more destination-oriented traffic to the surrounding retailers,” he reported. Construction is well underway on iFly, an indoor skydiving center, with a projected opening date in November 2016. Situated next to Top Golf, iFly, where the dream of flight becomes reality, will offer simulation of free fall conditions in a vertical wind tunnel. There are locations throughout the world with the closest being in Orlando. Across from Top Golf and the under construction IFly in Phase Two which also consists of multi-family development, is Brandon Healthplex, Tampa General Hospital’s first outpatient medical center. The 4-story, 140,000-sq.-ft. facility will offer a broad spectrum of health care services under one roof and is slated to open in early 2017. It will house the hospital’s first free-standing adult and pediatric emergency departments, surgery center, lab services, diagnostic imaging, physician offices as well as a helipad. “This is really Tampa General’s first major step into the new world of healthcare, which is bringing healthcare to you,” said John A. Brabson Jr, chairman of the TGH Board of Directors. When complete, the Estuary, located on nearly 150 acres will house more than 500,000 sq. ft. of development bringing thousands of jobs and a significant economic impact to the area. For more information about available space, contact Roberts & Associates Southeast at 813-443-5097 or visit www.rasere.com.

Brandon Resident Iva Lee Haygood Bell Still Smiling After 105 Years Iva Lee Haygood Bell recently celebrated a birthday that most of us can only hope to reach. She turned 105 on September 10. A party was held for her at the Bloomingdale West Recreation Center. Born in 1911 in Alpharetta, Georgia, Bell relocated with her family to Tampa in 1926 at age 14, settling in Gary, a small section of town Iva Lee Haygood east of Ybor City. One Bell Celebrates 105. evening in late 1926, she met her future husband Rowland at a drug-store soda counter across from the Columbia restaurant. They married in 1927 in Ybor City and had twin daughters born in 1942 and another daughter in 1955. She and Roland were married for 56 years until his death in 1984. Her husband worked for the shipyards in Tampa and as a mechanic at the Hav-A-Tampa cigar factory before the family ran a feed and grocery store on Florida Avenue near Sulphur Springs. In addition to helping run the family stores, Iva Lee Bell rolled cigars for Hav-A-Tampa in the 1930s and later worked for Maas Brothers department store in Tampa. The family relocated to the growing Brandon community in 1953 and settled near Lithia Pinecrest Rd. and State Road 60. They opened Bell’s Grocery, and the business thrived off the two lane State Road 60, but when the road was

widened around 1958, they lost parking frontage which resulted in a decline in business. They finally had to close the store in the early 1960’s. Bell currently lives in Brandon with her daughter Gloria. She visits the Bloomingdale West Recreation Center three or four times a week to do activities and socialize with her friends. Everyone wants to know her secret, but the Brandon resident is quick to admit she doesn’t have a magic formula for long life. She has been drinking coffee since the age of 5, has never had a specific exercise routine, and has never smoked nor tasted alcohol. She credits her children and grandchildren in keeping her active. Bell has loved to read all of her life and has always eaten smaller meals and enjoys vegetables. “I never took medicine,’’ Bell said. “Never been sick, didn’t have to. If I took medicine it probably would make me sick.’’ She has seen a lot of changes in her 105 years, but if asked, she doesn’t really give it a second thought.

GET THE DIRT

WITH FLORIDA YARD EXPERT Lynn Barber, Hillsborough County Extension The Community Water Wise Awards are sponsored by Tampa Bay Water and recognizes individuals and businesses committed to conserving our water resources and protecting the environment by using Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) principles. There are nine FFL principles which include: right plant right place, water efficiently, fertilize appropriately, mulch, attract wildlife, manage yard pests responsibly, recycle, reduce stormwater runoff and protect the waterfront. Many of these principles are used as part of the landscape evaluation process for this award program. I’m pleased to announce the winners for the 2016 Community Water Wise Award Contest. For unincorporated Hillsborough County, the winner was Paula Stewart. The City of Tampa residential winner was Sherry Louer. The City of Tampa non-residential winner was The Learning Garden at the Florida State Fair, managed and maintained by Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful staff and volunteers. There are several elements of all three landscapes that were positive examples of Florida-Friendly

LandscapingTM waterwise practices. These include the planting of drought-tolerant trees and plants, self-mulching areas under trees, groundcovers versus turfgrass utilized in all or several areas of the landscapes, plants selected that are appropriate for your site conditions, grouping of plants with similar water and maintenance needs. We were excited about Paula Stewart’s use of drought tolerant native landscape plants. And, we were impressed with Sherry Louer’s and The Learning Garden’s utilization of native, non-native adaptive landscape plants and raised bed gardens. With 17 entries submitted this year, it was difficult selecting the 2016 Community Water Wise Award Winners. We hope you will consider entering this contest which you can do any time during the year at http://tampabaywaterwise.org. The deadline for entries is June 30, so you can complete an application now, submit it and get a head start! For assistance with horticultural questions, call us at 744-5519 or visit us at the UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County, 5339 County Road 579, Seffner.

Florida Orchestra Season Takes Off With Acrobats & MoreBy Kelly Smith

Cirque de la Symphonie and Jeremy Denk

From acrobats to one-handed concertos to good old rock ‘n’ roll, The Florida Orchestra season is off to a wild, wonderful start in October. At the heart of it all is some of the most beloved music of all time performed by the largest professional orchestra in Florida, under the leadership of Music Director Michael Francis. In addition to the September 30 opening night concert with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, look at the variety of concerts packed into October: Cirque de la Symphonie (FridaySunday, October 7-9 with Saturday matinee): The whole family will flip for the Pops season opener, with cirque-style acrobats, aerialists, strongmen and contortionists performing in front of (and above) the orchestra as it plays favorites from John Williams, Tchaikovsky, Ravel and more. The Music of Genesis Starring Daryl Stuermer (Friday, October 14): Virtuoso guitarist Daryl Stuermer of Genesis rocks out with the orchestra for hits like I Can’t Dance, Invisible Touch, Throwing it All

Away and more. This is one night only at the Mahaffey Theater. Free Pops in the Park (Saturday, October 15): It’s Star Wars under the stars at the mega-popular free concert in waterfront Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg, presented by Ashley HomeStore. This year includes music from two Star Wars movies, the original and The Force Awakens, along with symphonic classics, Broadway hits and an explosive patriotic finale with fireworks. Encore performance on Sunday, October 16 at River Tower Park in Tampa (no fireworks). Jeremy Denk Plays Ravel (FridaySunday, October 21-23): See pianist Jeremy Denk use the whole keyboard but only one hand for Ravel’s Concerto for the Left Hand. Ray Charles, Motown and Beyond! (Friday-Sunday, October 28-30): “Ambassador of Soul” Ellis Hall pays tribute to the legendary Ray Charles, with hits like Unchain My Heart, Hit the Road Jack and, of course, Georgia on My Mind. Jeff Tyzik conducts. The Florida Orchestra regularly performs at the Straz Center in Tampa, Mahaffey in St. Petersburg and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. The Village Players Present The Vampyre

Come see the next production by the Village Players this October. Just in time for Halloween- the Village Players will present The Vampyre.

The Village Players will present The Vampyre, directed by Carlton Jones, three weekends in October beginning on Friday, October 7. As has become a popular tradition with the Village Players, Opening Night will be celebrated with Dinner Theatre. The cost for Opening Night Dinner Theatre is just $25 per person. In addition to seeing a great show, you will get a delicious dinner of salad, bread, chicken marsala, cake and your choice of tea or water. Soda and coffee will be available for purchase. Reservations are required and seating is limited. Opening Night Dinner Theatre is made possible thanks to a sponsorship from Sandra Queen and Vicki Sommer of Ann Lee Reality and Ron Queen of Roque Consulting, LLC. Proceeds from Opening Night Dinner Theatre go toward the ongoing renovations of the historic James McCabe Theater located at 506 5th St. in Valrico. Other shows will be held on Saturday, October 8; Friday, October 14 and 21; and Saturday 15 and 22. Curtain call is 8 p.m. There will be a matinee on Sunday, October 23 at 3 p.m. Tickets for all shows other than opening night are

$15; $13 for students, seniors and military with ID; and $12 for groups of 10 or more by advance purchase only. The Vampyre is a short work of prose fiction written in 1819 by John William Polidori. The work is often described as the progenitor of the romantic vampire genre of fantasy fiction. Polidori transformed the vampire from a character in folklore into the form that is recognized today- an aristocratic fiend who preys among high society. The Village Players’ production is directed by Carlton Jones. “With a great eye for detail and characterization, we welcome back, once again, Carlton Jones, directing another classic thriller, The Vampyre,” said Gail Pierce, Producer of the Village Players. “He is a delight to work with both on and off the stage. He brings his characters to life. He brings his vision to full fruition with every play he directs,” added Pierce. You will not want to miss another great performance by the Village Players just in time for Halloween. You can get your tickets online at www.thevillageplayersvalrico.com or by calling the Villages Players hotline at 480 3147.

A Call To Artists Has Been Issued For The 9th Annual Winthrop Arts Festival And Artisan Market

All artists and artisans are encouraged to join Winthrop Founder, John Sullivan and Winthrop Town Artist, Bryant Martinez and volunteers, Patricia Guthman and Emaly Martinez at the 9th Annual Winthrop Arts Festival and Artisan Market. Applications for the show are now available. Space is limited and the top three artists will be eligible for cash prizes.

A call to artists and artisans has been issued by organizers of the 9th Annual Winthrop Arts Festival and Artisan Market, which will be held on Saturday, March 25 and Sunday, March 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Winthrop Common in Riverview. All artists and artisans who are interested in having their art work considered for this juried arts show, can visit www.winthroparts.org and download an application. Applications received by November 30 must include an application fee of $25. Those submitted after December 1, must be accompanied by a $50 application fee. Once artists are notified of their acceptance into the show, there is an application fee of $100. For artisans, the application fee and timeline are the same. The artisan market fee is $250. Both fees are due by March 1, 2017. The Winthrop Arts Festival and Artisan Market is a juried show, and it has become a recognized and eagerly awaited annual event. Artists and artisans from the local area as well as nationally have participated in years past. Fine art artists who are accepted will be eligible to win monetary awards. Last year over $2,200 was

awarded including $1,000 for Best of Show. The show is judged by highly qualified judges. Katharine Sullivan-Dawes, the Director of Everything for Winthrop Arts, Inc. said, “We are adding spaces this year for both artists and artisans, as we want to showcase more talent in our community. We have also extended the application window, so artists and artisans have more time to submit their work. We are hoping for the largest and most diverse festival ever.” Bryant Martinez, the Winthrop Town Artist said, "The Winthrop Arts Festival and Artisan Market is becoming a great venue for artists from all over to show their work. This community has truly embraced the arts.” Sullivan-Dawes added, “In addition to attending this two day event, the community can embrace their inner art critic by becoming a Friend of Winthrop Arts sponsor for only $125. You can select your favorite artist and they receive a $75 award. It is a great way to get involved with this community event.” Sponsorships are available at varying levels. Lose Weight • Build Strength Body Tone • Endurance • Flexibility Bob & Chris – Both Excited With Progress We always thought we were in fairly good shape for our age (both 63). We had been fitness walking for years or using a gym for our daily workouts. Our eating habits, however, had deteriorated over time, and we found we snacked a lot at night and NOT on healthy foods. We finally acknowledged that we were overweight and no longer as toned and fit as we wanted to be. It had gotten to the point that photos of us were not exactly ‘complimentary’ – shadows would simply not cover our pudginess! BEFORE AFTER About this time, we started noticing several of our friends were looking fitter, healthier, and happier and we asked questions to try and discover their secret. It turned out that each had been transformed at RobZFitness, so we summoned up our courage and marched our not-so-svelte bodies to his facility for a fitness evaluation which (unfortunately) validated our concerns. After Rob explained his proven program of nutrition, cardio, and weight training, we signed up and began our training that same week. Our personal trainer, Taylor, was awesome! He constantly assessed our progress, and cheerfully pushed us to improve (completely tuning out our stereo whining). We worked very hard every session and Taylor continually introduced new exercises to challenge and motivate us, increase our strength, and improve our muscle tone. No time to get bored! Bottom line – we are so excited with our progress. After 3 months of intense training, there has been a huge change in the way we look and feel. Bob’s body fat dropped from 25.8% to 13.5% after 12 weeks, and he lost 20+ lbs. Chris lost just shy of 20 lbs, and her body fat percentage went from 32.4% to 19.4%! We no longer mind having our picture taken! We eat healthier foods; we have more energy; and we are committed to continuing on this path so that we remain toned and fit. We promise…try it and you’ll be so glad you did!! Bob & Christine Garrett

The issues she is plans to address are: fully fund education and make sure that kids are taught how to think and not just how to take a test; to create an environment where small businesses can thrive and grow. Small businesses are the incubators of employment in our communities; and as the child of aging parents who have struggled with health issues, Rena finds it inexcusable that over 800,000 Floridians, including 40,000 veterans, do not have healthcare. www.RenaForFlorida.com.

From collecting on a legal judgment or filing a small claim in a dispute, to attempting to file for divorce without being able to afford an attorney, I’ve heard all the horror stories. I want to be able to do more than put the problems on TV or help folks as a private attorney. As Clerk, I will truly be able to serve the consumers.” https://ericseidelforclerk.com/

Four Constitutional Amendments On General Election Ballot Explained

By Kathy L. Collins

Florida voters for the 2016 General Election must consider four Constitutional Amendments. Five ballot measures were certified to appear on the ballots for the 2016 election. One of them, Amendment No. 4 was on the ballot during the primary and received the requisite number of votes to be enacted. Citizens should read each closely and understand what the amendment is seeking to enact. In Florida, in order for a Constitutional Amendment to be enacted, it must win a supermajority of 60 percent of the votes. The Constitutional Amendments include the following:

No. 1 Rights of Electricity Consumers Regarding Solar Energy Choice

Citizens should read this proposal carefully. The amendment does not provide for the right to use solar equipment, as we already have that right. Instead, it would allow state or local entities to impose fees and regulations on citizens who install solar power at their homes or businesses. This amendment is backed largely by the utility companies. It should be noted that Constitutional Amendment No. 4 was on the ballot during the Primary and was approved. It prevents solar panels from being counted toward a

No. 3 Tax Exemption for Totally and Permanently Disabled First Responders

Voters in Hillsborough County have a lot of decisions to make when it comes to the 2016 General Election. From voting for President, U.S. Senators and Representatives to state and county representatives to four Constitutional Amendments, the voters have a lot to decide.

home or business’ property value. In other words, property taxes will not go up due to the installation of solar panels.

No. 2 Use of Marijuana for Debilitating Medical Conditions

Passage of this amendment would allow legal medical marijuana for patients suffering from 10 specific debilitating conditions including, but not limited to, Cancer, Glaucoma, Epilepsy and Parkinsons. The amendment is also designed to require the Department of Health to regulate marijuana production and distribution centers and issue identification cards for both patients and caregivers.

This amendment would provide relief from ad valorem tax assessments on homestead property for first responders who have been per-

manently disabled in the line of duty. Currently, this exemption is available only to surviving spouses of first responders or members of the military who have been killed in the line of duty.

No. 5 Homestead Exemption for Certain Senior, Low-Income, Long-Term Residents; Determination of Just Value

David Sable MD, PHD, FAAD Board Certi!ied in Dermatology Mohs Surgery, Medical and Surgical Dermatology

This amendment seeks to provide tax relief for homes valued at less than $250,000 which are owned by individuals over the age of 65 who have lived in their home for at least 25 years. Essentially, this would provide eligible seniors with certain property tax exemptions and allowing home values to remain fixed after application for the exemption even if the value later exceeds the designated threshold. Voting for the 2016 General Election in Florida will begin with Early Voting which starts on Monday, October 24 and runs through Sunday, November 6. The General Election is on Tuesday, November 8. You must be registered to vote by Tuesday, October 11. You can review your ballot and request a Vote By Mail Ballot from the Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections Office by visiting www.votehillsborough.org. Best Shredders Named At Final County’s Skateboarding Finale

By Tamas Mondovics

Hillsborough County’s top skateboarders had a chance to once again measure up their skills of laser flips, board slides, ollies, kick flips or 180 and 360 backside flips, last month during the final phase of a three-part contest series. The competition, the first of which began earlier this spring was held at the Brandon Skate Park 5720 Providence Road in Riverview, on Saturday, September 17, and brought together dozens of talented young skaters all who were equally hoping to win the title or at least earn some recognition by their peers. Upcoming Food Truck Rally To Support, Benefit First Responders

By Amy Schechter

REVAMPED 2016 CIVIC COUPE IS A NO-BRAINER A few weeks ago, Honda had dispatched over the 2016 Honda Civic sedan for us. And recently, we had the opportunity to test out the coupe in the Japanese carmaker’s lineup. Both share the same power train, transmission, suspension and steering: a 1.5-liter DOHC turbocharged engine putting out 174 horsepower @ 5500 rpm and 162 pounds-feet of torque @ 5500 rpm; continuous variable transmission; MacPherson strut front and multi-link independent rear suspension; and dual-pinion electric power steering with variable ratio. But it is in the exterior and interior dimensions that the two are different. The coupe length and height is down by 1 and 0.1 respectively, wheelbase and width up by 3.1 and 1.8 inches respectively. Trunk volume sees a hike of 0.2 to 11.9 cubic feet and passenger space by 6 to 88.6 cubic feet. Lest we forget, this year’s version is 76 pounds lighter than its predecessor. Honda also has enhanced the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure with additional hightensile steel to absorb force in a front collision. Noticeably lowered are noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels. Like its sedan sibling, the 10th-generation Civic coupe sports a chromed Honda “wing” across the front fascia while the rear shows off C-shaped “light-pipe”

LED tail lamps. A first for Civic is cap less refueling. Other basic features in our Touring trim included eight-way power driver and fourway passenger leather seats, tilt/telescopic steering column, 7-inch audio touch display with 450-watt sound system, remote engine start, electronic parking brake, dual auto a/c, heated front and rear seats and door pocket bins. Standard safety features include dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag with rollover sensor, stability assist and traction control, four-wheel antilock brakes, forward collision and lane departure warnings, lake keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking, tire pressure monitoring system and daytime running lights. Calling all families and foodies! Mark your calendars for Friday, October 7 from 5-9 p.m. because Summerfield Golf Club will host the Riverview Our Town Food Truck Rally in honor of our community’s first responders. This is a perfect opportunity to come out and meet your neighbors, sample a wide variety of delectable fare, and most importantly, honor the men and women in our community who always come when we need them. The event is the brainchild of the Riverview Area Word of Mouth Facebook group and is headed up by its title sponsors, Jason Blanchard with Summerfield Crossings Golf Club; Theresa Turner, CPA with Tax Happens LLC; and Kerin Clarkin with Kerin Realty. Turner is excited about Riverview’s first food truck rally. “This is bringing Riverview together while appreciating our first responders,” she said.

The big goal is to be able to regularly organize community events on a quarterly basis, but they need the support of the community. Ten food trucks will serve up an international menu of dishes from around the world that is sure to excite your taste buds. There will be something for everyone, even your picky eaters. Summerfield Golf Club will sell adult beverages with family friendly drinks available at all of the trucks. Organizers also plan to have a fire truck on site for kids to explore, face-painting, and pet adoption organizations as well as a DJ spinning live tunes. Most importantly, there will be a 50/50 raffle benefiting multiple nonprofits which help local police, firefighters, and first responders including Riverview Our Town Inc. and The Lynn Sowers Memorial Foundation Inc. All proceeds will be split between the winner and the organizations. There is no cost to attend the event, but food and beverage prices vary by vendor. Come out and show your support for these brave men and women and their families. Organizers are still soliciting for industry-specific sponsors. Your donations are needed for first responders and to cover some costs incurred to make it all happen. Contact Theresa Turner, CPA at info@riverviewourtown.com.
