TAG sale

April 2, 2023 with

VINTAGE LAND & CATTLE LTD.

Welcome to our annual Tag Sale! Our spring sale offering and format is very similar to last year and we hope you can take the time to come and see all that we have available this year. If you have never been before, we extend a special welcome and invitation to attend prior to the sale or on April 2 for our Open House and Sale Close Out. Our intent is to showcase our program and let you choose from the offering to add to your operation. You will find a variety of animals that can fit purebred or commercial herds and various budgets. We want to ensure we help you find the right fit for your needs, so please reach out to us with any questions you have about our program.

Once again, we welcome Vintage Herefords, The Larmer Family with their consignment of heifers that have wintered at our farm. We have been able to partner with the Larmers on several herd bulls, as a result the genetics on offer are similar to our program. This year is their last crop of McCoy Monarch daughters, their 2023 calf crop will be sired by OSF McCoy Jim Beam 14E 125J and we look forward to walking our newest herd sire McCoy 9707 Broker 154K at both OSF and Vintage this spring and summer.

The value that Hereford genetics contribute to the beef industry emphasizes the importance of economics. Herefords can provide you with genetics that are easy-fleshing, feed efficient, maternally productive, with docility and longevity. We continue to develop our herd to identify genetics lines that pair calving ease with performance while enhancing carcass merit. Take time to understand how your profitability can be increased by using Hereford genetics in your operation.

I would like to mention that our herd focus is on raising cattle that contribute positively to the commercial sector of the industry. We continue to expand our customer base that will utilize Hereford bulls in their operations. Similarly, we have multiple customers who purchase females to use in a cross-breeding situation. As a result, our emphasis is not to breed females that will win shows - although we do feel that we can offer Juniors/4-H’ers the opportunity to buy a heifer that will not only be competitive and at good value, but most importantly, be a productive cow. Last years sale saw multiple heifers selected to be 4-H projects, with several being competitive at major shows! Again, this year there are several animals on offer that would make ideal 4-H and Junior projects.

The animals offered in this sale are not managed any different then the rest of the herd, they have been raised as though we are keeping every animal for ourselves. The heifers have been developed and are in ideal condition, they are cycling and ready to breed. The cows are getting hay and mineral. We don’t trim feet, rather these animals are culled along with open females not calving within our targeted 60-day calving period. In closing, we really enjoy the opportunity to show you what we have to offer. If you can’t make it to the sale and want another opinion, please feel free to contact Blair Williamson who will be available for appraisal and will be helping us conduct the closing of the sale on April 2. We will have videos posted of most of the animals on offer to assist you in your decision making process. These videos were taken in February but will give you some indication of each animal’s abilities. We want to be a partner in your program by understanding your needs and assist you in making additions to your herd to help you achieve your goals. We invest a lot of time and effort into breeding decisions for our program and are very proud of our herd. Please accept this as your personal invitation to come tour our herd and see what we have to offer that will help you “Better Your Beef!”

In 2022 our household had a bigger focus on youth with the addition of Blake to our family! As O’Shea Farms, we supported youth in several ways:

- Partnered with the Ontario Hereford Association to provide sweatshirts to all Ontario 4-H members who completed their 2022 4-H project with a Hereford or Hereford influence animal.

- We had a fantastic week at Bonanza 2022 in Lindsay! Thanks to the crew who exhibited OSF animals, Megan and Kalla Nicholas, Daniel Naddy, Keenan Grieve and McKenna Ross. It was a pleasure to watch these kids work so well together and participate in many events.

- Congratulations to Sam Haley winning Grand Champion Female at Oxford County 4-H Show with OSF Juno 20F 131J.

- Congratulations to Keenan Grieve who was Grand Champion Showperson at Oxford County 4-H Show and was 2nd in class at the Royal Winter Fair in the 4-H Jr Beef heifer show with OSF Sarah 20F 2117J

- Daniel Naddy had a tremendous year including Champion 4-H animal in PEI with OSF Joyride 20F 223J

- CJHA Heifer lottery designated sale.

Also if a junior age member purchases an animal from our Tag sale and they are not a Canadian Junior Hereford Association member we will pay for your new membership!

As always we do our best to provide support and knowledge to any customers who have questions about genetics, management and production.

We look forward to attending and supporting youth events again in 2023!

Feature lot to start the sale, the stoutest heifer in the offering really stands out in the pen! Kahoot, along with her dam, were shown last year at Bonanza and her sweet disposition made her a natural fit for our niece McKenna to make her beef showing debut. Her young Dam is coveted part of our cowherd raising a herd bull prospect this year. Really nice set of numbers and performance data to accompany her attention grabbing phenotype. 130K indexed 104 at birth, 118 at weaning and 118 at yearling - this is a complete package!

More often than not this heifer catches my eye in the pen and one that should be staying in the herd. Fortunately, her moderate framed, sound uddered dam 220B (who has always been valued in our herd) has given us another heifer this year. Last year we used a maternal brother - OSF 125J as clean up here and then to breed the majority of the herd at Vintage Herefords. Frontenac’s dam - 36D has an impressive herd bull prospect again this year.

A true beef cow, just take note of the shape and thickness exhibited by 78F and her bull calf OSF 120L. (Sired by OLTN 10Y Excalibur ET 14E) 78F is consistently calving in the front of our calving season and can be bred to power bulls as she transmits strong calving ease and low birthweight traits.

(3/4 Hereford, ¼ Angus) We had hoped to use 314J as a recipient like her Black Baldie Dam who continues to raise ET calves for us. Unfortunately for us she missed her early service and is calving later then desired for our program. Take advantage and add her to a spring calving program, she looks to be setting up a nice udder! Exposed to OSF 125J for a March calf or OSF 120J for an April calving.

Used as clean up on heifers in our herd last year, the first calves have come unassisted and vigorous. Here is a 2 year old bull that can cover a bigger group of cows. With indexes of 108 at birth, 103 at weaning and 109 at yearling, Jerome offers versatility and practicality.

A higher performance Monarch yearling who will add phenotype, thickness and pounds. His Dam 120F has one of, if not the top heifer calf in this years crop and has an excellent udder with small teats as is expected from the Pinnacle daughters. With calf prices strong you will want to market as many heavy calves as possible and Kershaw is up for the task! (214K is in Bull development group at Gilchrist Farms, Lucknow).
