Dear Generals fans, as we embark on yet another year of hockey, I’m excited for the outlook of our hockey club. This year, the expectations are higher as we continue our search for yet another championship.
This season, we welcome many new and exciting young players along with many returnees, all coming together to make this year very promising.
I wanted to thank all of our loyal fans for all their continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone around the rink soon!
I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer.
This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season.
With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come.
Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again.
Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same.
GO GENS GO !!!!!!
While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.
A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats.
QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)
Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!
Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!
The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.
We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.
Get loud, cheer, and let your favourite team on the ice know you’re behind them – Afterall, hockey is the best sport out there.

This season marks a full decade since the Val D’or Foreurs appeared in the Memorial Cup tournament, but their sights are set on returning. After their first four games, the green and gold of the QMJHL are a perfect 4-0-0-0. Offensively, they’re lead by import forward, Tomas Cibulka. The 49th overall selection at the 2021 CHL Import Draft has appeared in all four games for the Foreurs, scoring twice and adding five assists.
The squad just across the provincial border from our nation’s capital, aren’t off to the best start in the QMJHL this year. An 0-4-1 start leaves the Olympique with just one point in five contests. Keeping the puck out of their net seems to be their kryptonite, allowing 27 while only scoring nine of their own. It’s not all dim in Gatineau though, as the organization just submitted their intention to bid on hosting the 2025 Memorial Cup tournament.
Every year, there’s always at least one team in the CHL who look to be the squad nobody will be able to touch. So far, that’s the Prince George Cougars. In six games, the Cougars are 5-1-0-0 but are decimating their opponents. Prince George has only allowed 14 goals against and have scored 40. That wasn’t a typo, in six games the Cougars have scored 40 goals. Of the top five point-getters in the entire WHL, the Cougars hold all five spots, led by Terik Parascak’s 10 goals and five assists.
Across the province of British Columbia, the story is a little different for the Victoria Royals. After four games, the Royals sit last in the entire WHL without a win, at 0-4-0-0. They’ve struggled both to score and keep the puck out, allowing 25 goals in four games, and scoring just nine of their own. 2005 born Nate Misskey has been the bright spot for the Royals, producing at a point per game pace to start the year.
After just three games, the Greyhounds have thrown their hat into the OHL ring for best of the best this season. After pushing the Flint Firebirds aside 11-3 in their home opener, they continued their winning ways with a 7-5 victory over Brantford and a tight 3-2 shootout win over the London Knights. Newly acquired Jack Beck arrived as advertised, co-leading the Greyhounds in points with six.
Following their run to the Western Conference Final a year ago, it’s been a slow and disappointing start in Flint. After just two games, the Firebirds have suffered two blowout losses – 11-3 to the Greyhounds and 8-0 to the Kitchener Rangers. As expected after a deep run, the Firebirds knew it would be a “down” year, but now they’ll need to find that competitive edge once again. Rookie, and Ajax, Ont., native Jeremy Martin has one of the Firebirds three goals on the season.
While all eyes are on the pregame ceremony tonight, there’s still sure to be an exciting game to follow, when the Mississauga Steelheads make their first of two visits to the Tribute Communities Centre tonight.
The Steelheads come into Oshawa undefeated to start the season, sitting at a 3-0-0-0 record. The Steelheads opened the season with a home and home sweep of the Erie Otters 5-0 and 5-3 respectively. Last night, the Steelheads went into Niagara and earned their second shutout win in just three games. Ryerson Leenders has been in net for both shutouts and now boasts a stat line of 3-0-0-0, a goals-against average of just 1.00, and a save percentage good enough for 0.968.
Oshawa hopes they can build off their big home opener win over the Frontenacs last Sunday. The Generals scored a 5-4 victory on the heels of Tristan Delisle’s first ever OHL goal, and Nikita Tarasevich’s first as an Oshawa General. Jacob Oster made the start and stood tall when he needed to for the win, stopping 23/27 shots.
Off the ice, the game gets started with a pregame ceremony dedicated to the legacy of legendary Hall of Famer, Dave Andreychuk. Tonight, Andreychuk’s #9 will take it’s rightful place in the rafters of the Tribute Communities Centre alongside other greats that have come through our organization.
The last time these two teams met was a cause for celebration. The Generals were in a tight playoff race down to the final weekend of the season last year, where every single point mattered. Entering the final weekend, a Generals win over the Steelheads on March 19th put them into the post season over the Kingston Frontenacs. Had the Generals lost the game on March 24th, they would have needed a must-win effort against the Frontenacs on March 26th.
All three of the Generals goals from that game, came from players who have since graduated out of the OHL - two from Cameron Butler and one from Ryan Gagnier. Mississauga’s goal scorers were Angus MacDonell and Zander Veccia, both of which are currently in their team’s top-five scorers in 2023-2024.
The New York Rangers prospect is beginning to prove all the scouts correct early in the season. In the Generals two games, Roobroeck has scored in both and currently leads the Generals in points with three. Keep an eye on the 6’7 forward on the ice, as his skating and speed continues to be one of his greatest assets early in the year.
In just three games, the Dallas Stars prospect has already scored twice and added three assists for five points. MacDonell was held off the scoresheet last night in Niagara - just the first time this season it’s happened. Last season, split between the Sarnia Sting and Mississauga Steelheads, MacDonell was a handful for the Generals, scoring six assists across four contests.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1
Tristan Delisle’s first OHL goal and Nikita Tarasevich’s first as an Oshawa General lift the team to a 5-4 win over the Kingston Frontenacs in Sunday night’s home opener. After the Frontenacs tied the game early in the third, it was the rookie Delisle who put the Gens in front before a much-needed insurance goal from Tarasevich pushed the Gens to win their first home opener since the 2019/20 season.
The Frontenacs broke the deadlock early when Owen Outwater took an unassuming shot from the boards. A rebound off the pads of goaltender Jacob Oster was left in front for Christopher Thibodeau to tap in for his first of the season.
With 7:40 to go in the period, Generals recent 1st round pick from the 2023 OHL Priority Selection Owen Griffin was sprung on a breakaway but was hooked from behind and sent back to centre ice for a penalty shot. All eyes 4512 fans inside the Tribute Communities Centre awaited what could be Griffin’s first goal in the OHL.
Griffin took it wide to his left, then cut to the middle before a poke check attempt from Vaccari, unfortunately, spoiled the show.
The Gens outshot Kingston 16-8 in the first period but were unable to beat the Frontenacs goalie and went to the changeroom down 1-0. Vaccari was already making his third start of the young season, standing between the pipes in each of Kingston’s three games this year.
After a breakaway save at one end by Oster, early in the second period, the Generals moved the puck up ice where Ben Danford found Matthew Buckley on his own. Buckley drove wide and put it over the glove of Vaccari tying up the game 1-1.
That was not it, as later in the period Beckett Sennecke wristed one on the net creating a rebound for Luca D’Amato to riffle into the net for his first of the season and a 2-1 lead.
Just over a minute and a half later, New York Rangers prospect Dylan Roobroeck drove hard to the net
beating the defencemen before he flicked the puck over the goalie’s glove making it a 3-1 game for the Generals. Before the period could end, the Frontenacs made it clear they were not going away, cutting the lead in half with a one-time goal from Jacob Holmes making it a 3-2 game.
Kingston tied the game up two and a half minutes into the third when Ethan Miedema took a pass off the boards from Matthew Soto, beating Oster to make it 3-3. Miedema has been the lifeblood of the Frontenacs offense so far this year, scoring three goals and adding three assists for six points in the Frontenacs’ first three games.
With the Generals pushing for the lead, Luca Marrelli gathered the puck after a blocked shot, before found rookie Delisle sitting on the backdoor for his first OHL goal making it 4-3 Oshawa just over two minutes after it was leveled.
A big insurance goal came from an empty net goal off the stick of Tarasevich, his first as a General since being acquired from the Battalion in the offseason. Tarasevich’s empty-netter proved to be huge as in the last minute of play the Frontenacs’ Jacob Battaglia scored making it 5-4.
The Generals were able to hold on for the final 30 seconds of play, giving themselves their first win of the season, and first home opener win since the start of the 2019-2020 season. Dylan Roobroeck and Beckett Sennecke took home first and third star respectively while Ethan Miedema claimed third star honours.
Oshawa is off until Friday night when they take on the Mississauga Steelheads on October 6th. Make sure you get to your seats right away on Friday night, as the Generals will begin the evening with a jersey retirement ceremony to honour Hockey Hall of Famer, Dave Andreychuk.
Starting The John Tavares Foundation was something we talked about for a long time, and is something I’m incredibly proud of. The foundation is centered on coming together to ensure the next generation has access to healthy foods, an understanding of the benefits of movement and increased availability of mental health resources. We hope to positively impact as many children and communities as possible to create a brighter future for everyone.

On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scour Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his batter with a rare form of colorectal cancer.
Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run.
Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, and OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.
1976-2023
The entire Oshawa Generals organization continues to send their love to entire Craig family, his students, and all of the players who he crossed paths with.

Last season, the Oshawa Generals found themselves in a fight for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference until the final week of play. Fortunately enough, some timely wins meant the team squeezed into the postseason – by a single point.
They were met with the formidable opponent, and league leaders, the Ottawa 67’s. A five game series saw the Generals bow out of the playoffs, ending the season sooner than many ever want it to end.
Despite the early end, there was one diamond in all the rough – a sixth overall pick.
The Oshawa Generals used their sixth overall selection at the 2023 OHL Priority Selection to draft forward Owen Griffin from the York-Simcoe Express.
The Markham, Ont., native joins now teammates Beckett Sennecke, Ben Danford, and Calum Ritchie as recent first round selections by the Generals.
“Getting drafted by Oshawa was so exciting,” said Griffin. “The first thing I thought that day was ‘I just can’t wait to get to Oshawa and meet the rest of the team.”
Well, it didn’t take long for Griffin to fit right in both on and off the ice.
His skills on the ice were no surprise to anyone who followed him last year though. In the 2022-2023 season with the York-Simcoe Express, Griffin played 35 games, scored 51 goals, and added 43 assists for 94 points. His totals were good for 2.7 points per game.
Ahead of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection, Griffin was described as one of the smartest and most skilled centers from this year’s draft class. He makes everyone around him better as he puts the puck in areas where they will be successful.
His smarts and skill were on full display during the 2023 preseason schedule. Griffin finished exhibition play at the top of the team’s leaderboard with five points in four games. He also finished among top of the rookie scoring leaderboard.
With a young, but exceedingly skilled group of players, the addition of Griffin to the lineup should mean the Generals are not only taking a step forward from last season, but one step closer to being true contenders among the best of the OHL.
