I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer. This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season. With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come. Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again. Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same. GO GENS GO !!!!!!

hockey ETIQUETTE While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.
1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA
A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats. QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)
2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU
Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!
3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK
Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!
4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY
The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.
5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE
We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.

DRUMMONDVILLE VOLTIGEURS - QMJHL Tied for 1st place in the QMJHL’s Western Conference, the Drummondville Voltigeurs are stringing together a bunch of wins all at the perfect time. Sitting right next to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, the Voltigeurs have 30 points thanks to a record of 13-7-3-1 after 24 games. This marks a big shift in how their season began as after 14 games, they sat with a mediocre record of 6-5-2-1. Despite their recent winning ways, they are coming off a loss to the Quebec Remparts. While the Voltigeurs are one of the two strongest teams in the Western Conference, they still sit 14 points back of the QMJHL leaders over in Baie-Comeau. Drummondville’s offence funnels through Bridgewater, N.S., native Luke Woodworth. The 2004-born centre has 29 points through his team’s 24 games, including 12 goals and 17 assists.
ACADIE-BATHURST TITAN - QMJHL

A team going in a bit of different direction than the Voltigeurs would be the AcadieBathurst Titan. One of three teams from the province of New Brunswick, the Titan find themselves at the basement of the QJHL’s Eastern Conference standings, and just four points clear of dead-last overall. After 23 games this season, the Titan have won just eight games, and are currently on a four-game losing streak. Their most recent loss was a 3-1 defeat to the CHL’s top-ranked team, the Halifax Mooseheads. Overall, the Titan are middle of the pack in terms of putting the puck in the net, scoring 73 goals in their 23 games. Where there weakness hurts the most is their ability to keep the puck out of their own net. The Titan have allowed the third most goals in the QMJHL at 93 – behind only Saint John’s 94 and Gatineau’s 111. Despite their inconsistency in the standings, two forwards are hitting their stride with the Titan. Winger Robert Orr has scored 30 points in 23 games with seven goals in 23 games, while centreman Milo Roelens trails by a single point. PHOTO BY: BRYANNAH JAMES
EDMONTON OIL KINGS - WHL When you go absolutely all-in to win a championship, sometimes you can feel the consequences for more than single season. The Edmonton Oil Kings are a quarter of the way through their second season post 2022 WHL Championship but still find themselves dead last in the WHL. The 50-win team from the 2021-2022 has only won 16 games since then, including just a 10-win season a year ago. 22 games into the 2023-2024 season, the Oil Kings are still in last place with only six wins and just 13 points. Currently, the Oil Kings are stuck in a three game losing streak, and a stretch of 3-70-0 in their last 10. While they aren’t the worst offensive team in the WHL, scoring 65 goals – they have given up the most goals in the league with 106. It isn’t all bad news for the City of Champions as offensively the Oil Kings are led by rookie centre Adam Jecho. In 19 games played, the rookie forward has eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points. Rookie winger Aidan Litke is also impressing early in his career, scoring 11 points in nine games with the Oil Kings. PHOTO BY: ANDY DEVILN
SEATTLE THUNDERBIRDS - WHL One team that has seemed to figure out the championship hangover are the Seattle Thunderbirds. A season removed from the WHL Championship, the Thunderbirds are over .500 and sit 10-8-1-0 with 21 points. Their 21 points is currently good enough for seventh in the Western Conference and has the Thunderbirds in a playoff position. At this point the season, the Thunderbirds have actually cooled down, with subpar record of 3-6-1-0 in their last 10 games. The Thunderbirds have scored the least amount of goals in the WHL’s Western Conference, but when you lose the firepower of Lucas Ciona, Kevin Korchinski and Brad Lambert it might but assumed your offence takes a step back. WINDSOR SPITFIRES - OHL This team might find themselves in the news a lot this week and it will have little to do with their on-ice results – at least for now. The Windsor Spitfires are in some coaching turmoil this week after firing Head Coach Jerrod Smith. Following Smith’s dismissal, two more coaches (an assistant and goaltender coach) turned in their resignations. Many believed it was only a matter of time for the Spits to start making some moves to shake up their team, as the team sits dead last in the entire CHL with just nine points in 21 games. Windsor currently finds themselves on an eight-game losing streak, and have only one win in their last 10 games. The Spitfires have given up a league worst 121-goals against including six games of at least seven or more goals given up. The team began to trade off assets earlier this week when they completed a trade with the 2024 Memorial Cup hosts Saginaw Spirit, sending Alex Christopoulos and Rodwin Dionicio. NORTH BAY BATTALION - OHL One team almost synonymous with success in the Central Division are the North Bay Battalion. Seemingly always near the top of the division, and Eastern Conference, the Battalion are at the top again. Leading their division by a single point over the Mississauga Steelheads, the Battalion are 10-6-4-1 in 21 games and are riding an three game point streak and a stretch of points in eight of their last 10 games. North Bay has two of the league’s best on the defensive lines, including former first overall pick Ty Nelson and 2022 OHL Goaltender of the Year Dom DiVincentiis. Something new for the Battalion is to also be near the top of the league in offensive production as well. The duo of Anthony Romani and Dalyn Wakley have combined for 62 points in 21 games. Romani leads the team with 17 goals and 15 assists while Wakley is close behind with seven goals and 23 assists. The troops next test will be the always strong London Knights. After build up a 5-0 lead in the first period the Gens seemingly packed it in as they gave that lead up and lost in over time. Oshawa sit in last in the East Division with 18 points so far this season. The 67’s come into town 3-3 in their last six games and sit in second place in the East Division.
Last Meeting: It was Oshawa getting the win last time out, picking up a 6-3 win over Ottawa as the Gens got goals from five different players. After a goalless first period Ottawa opened the scoring as the two teams would trade goals before the Generals scored four unanswered giving Oshawa a 5-2 lead.

Oshawa Generals blow a five-goal first-period lead as they fall 6-5 to the Peterborough Petes in overtime. Despite getting two goals in the first from each of Beckett Sennecke and Rasmus Kumpulainen the Gens were unable to get anything going after that as the Petes stormed back scoring six unanswered. The Gens got things started early in this one as Sennecke scored two goals in 30 seconds. The first came when Luke Torrance crossed the blue line and left the puck for Sennecke who made a nice move to get passed the Petes’ goalie before tucking it in to make it 1-0. Before the fans could stop celebrating the first one Sennecke took a pass from Ben Danford and snapped a wrister past Liam Sztuska making it 2-0 Generals inside the first two minutes of the game. Halfway through the first Oshawa would add to their lead, after creating a three-on-two it was Dylan Roobroeck finding Luca D’Amato in the slot who took a shot that hit Callum Ritchie on its way into the net making it 3-0 Gens. It was all Generals in the first as they would add a fourth on a powerplay with just under five minutes to go when Sennecke threw a puck into a crowd of people and the puck took a deflection off of Kumpulainen and went into the net giving the Gens a 4-0 lead. But the Generals were not done there as in the last minute of the first it was Kumpulainen scoring his
second of the period carrying the puck across the blue line before cutting to the middle of the ice and snapping it past Sztuska making it 5-0 Gens in the first. The Petes would get on the board to start the second when Owen Beck was able to solve Oster as his shot found its way into the net making it a 5-1 game. Beck would get his second of the game a couple minutes later on the powerplay as he took a pass from Tommy Purdeller and put it in the back of the net cutting the score to 5-2 Oshawa. Peterborough kept the offence rolling later in the first just after the Gens were able to kill off a penalty it was Jax Dubois tapping in a back door pass from Samuel Mayer to make it 5-3 Generals. Beck completed his hat trick in the third on the powerplay picking up a rebound and wristing it over an outstretched Oster cutting the Gens lead in half and making it a 5-4 game in the third. It was a long road back for the Petes but with just over eight minutes to go the game was tied as Mayer crossed the Gens blue line and unleashed a slap shot that beat Oster tying the game at five. After being outshot 43-18 and blowing a five-goal lead this game would go to overtime. The comeback was complete as McCoy tapped the puck in as it squirted out in front off the stick of Beck.

IN MEMORIAM On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scout Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his battle with a rare form of colorectal cancer. Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run. Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.

LIVES ON IN THE ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE BY: JOELLE WOOD
On this November 11, the Ontario Hockey League honours the service of men and women who served our country, those we have lost, and those who continue to protect our freedoms. As we recognize those who have defended our great nation, now and throughout history, the OHL’s most prestigious individual award continues to honour Albert “Red” Tilson. Albert Tilson (1924-1944), nicknamed “Red” for his vibrant hair, was a former Oshawa Generals player killed in service during World War II. He played two seasons for the Generals beginning with the 1941-42 season, and won the J. Ross Robertson Cup as league champion both years. Tilson won the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy in the 1942-43 season as the league’s top scorer, registering 19 goals, 38 assists, and 57 points in 22 games. He had a promising professional hockey career ahead of him, but instead, Tilson enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces on May 27, 1943 to help defend our country. Serving as a Lance Corporal in the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, Tilson was killed in action in the Netherlands on October 27, 1944 at the young age of 20. “Today we honour the brave men and women in uniform, past and present, who serve and protect our country,” said OHL Commissioner David Branch. “The Ontario Hockey League and the hockey community will forever be indebted to those who have paid the supreme sacrifice for our freedoms. As we continue to honour the great legacy of Red Tilson in our league, it is important that we continue to pay tribute to all who have served our country just like him, and for all they have done to keep us safe.” Donated by The Globe and Mail and first presented in 1945, the Red Tilson Trophy continues to honour his legacy as the League’s most prestigious individual award presented annually to the OHL’s Most Oustanding Player. “For our organization and league to have a person like Red Tilson connected to it, is very special. Maybe no more so then this time of year, thinking of him laying down his life for others to live the life we have today. Whenever I bring in any prospect, I always make a note to educate the player and family on who Red was,” said Oshawa Generals Vice-President and General Manager, Roger Hunt. Tilson’s No. 9 uniform was retired by the Generals on November 12, 2006, a ceremony that included Gus Leonard, who played hockey with Tilson in the armed forces, and Bob Attersley who was the Generals’ first ever recipient of the Red Tilson Trophy. “For Red Tilson’s number 9 to be retired speaks volumes on what he represents as an Oshawa General. The very Memorial Cup is in honour of his memory and the many thousands more who are active or former soldiers serving Canada,” added Hunt. Now immortalized on the Red Tilson Trophy, some of the greatest junior players to ever play in the Ontario Hockey League have had the honour to be recognized in his name.

HOMETOWN hero Sergeant Amanda Crawford enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 17, in June 2001, with 23 Service Battalion, a Reserve Base, in Hamilton, Ontario. In 2006, she decided to pursue the Military as a full time career, and joined the Regular Force, where she was first posted to Toronto. She has had many postings over the years, including Kingston, Ottawa and Petawawa. While in Petawawa, she deployed to Sierra Leone in 2014, as part of Operation Sirona. Operation Sirona was the military component of the Canadian Government’s contribution to fighting the Ebola out break in West Africa. Canadian Armed Forces personnel augmented the efforts undertaken by the United Kingdom to combat the spread of the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone. The mission ended in June 2015. Sgt Crawford remained in Sierra Leone for two rotations during 2014-2015. She has also taken part in many training exercises within Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. At present, Sergeant Crawford is the Chief Human Resources Administrator at the Ontario Regiment here in Oshawa, where she and her family plan to remain as her final posting. Sergeant Crawford is engaged to be married to Colleen Ranger. They are the proud parents of Alyssa, Adam, Beau and Nate.

NAMED TO TEAM CANADA FOR U17s Generals forward Owen Griffin, and goaltending prospect Isaac Gravelle, have been named to Team Canada for the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
The 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, taking place in Charlottetown and Summerside, PEI., runs from November 2nd to November 11th and will once again feature two teams from Canada – Team Canada Red and Team Canada White. Griffin, the 5’10 Markham, Ont., native was selected in the first round, sixth overall by the Generals at the 2023 OHL Priority Selection. In seven games this season, Griffin is still searching for his first OHL point – but has been all over the ice in each of the Generals games. Despite not finding the finish he is hoping for, Griffin has been winning puck battles deep on the forecheck, and he opened up space for himself and his teammates thanks to his speed and stick-handling skills. GensNation did get to see flashes of his potential throughout the preseason when he scored two goals and three assists over four games. Last season, Griffin scored 94 points in just 35 games by way of 51 goals and 43 assists for the York SimcoeExpress. Gravelle, the goaltender from Fenwick, Ont., was taken in the second round by the Generals at the same 2023 OHL Priority Selection. In five games with the GOJHL’s Port Colbourne Sailors, Gravelle has played to a record of 2-1-2, with a strong 2.95 goals against average and .921 save percentage. Gravelle showed a lot of promise at the Generals’ recent summer training camp but was ultimately beaten out for the backup position by 2006-born Noah Bender. At only 16 years old, Gravelle is a name a lot of Generals’ fans should remember over the next few years, as he continues to develop into a star goaltender. Griffin and Gravelle join current Generals Calum Ritchie, Beckett Sennecke, Ben Danford, and David Bedkowski as recent Generals to appear at the tournament for Hockey Canada. Hosted on Prince Edward Island, the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge begins on November 2nd and will conclude with the Gold Medal game on November 11th.
