It’s that time of year again! I’m excited once again to welcome everyone back for another season of Generals Hockey. Each year, my goal is to uphold the legacy this organization has built throughout its long history. As always, we want to add another OHL and Memorial Cup title to our already league best totals, for not only the organization, but for you the fans. On behalf of our entire Generals family, I want to thank our sponsors, billets, new and returning season ticket holders, and each and every one of our loyal fans for their neverending support. I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2022-23 season of the Oshawa Generals and the Ontario Hockey League. This welcome back certainly goes to our legion of loyal supporters but also welcome back to the players, players families, billets and staff. It should also be noted that we cant wait to return to a normal schedule where we all get to see the stars of tomorrow from across the whole OHL. Every season takes on its own theme and feel. Every season takes on a life of its own. This year’s season will be the most competitive we have had in a few years. One factor is that we will again be returning to a full OHL schedule and with the Eastern Conference shaping up to be the most competitive it has been in years, every point and game will be a must for top rated performances. The addition of new Head Coach, Derek Laxdal and his winning pedigree is exactly what the doctor ordered, and the timing couldn’t be better. Along with new Associate Coach, Steve O’Rourke and Mike Hedden returning for his second season, this staff could go up against any in the CHL. You will continue to see a long line of future Generals stars on the ice again this season and I cant thank the scouts enough for all the hard work they do. The returning players have positioned us to be fighting for hardware again soon and the new players will have to get on board quickly. That being said, we are on a collision course with a couple of other teams in the Eastern Conference. If we have any desire to get another Bobby Orr trophy and then battle for the J. Ross Robertson trophy, business will need to be taken care of each and every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Our past is certainly something that everyone in our region, city and organization are very proud of. During this season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again. Lets get behind the team from the start and cheer them onto victory. Go Gens Go!!!!!! THE GAME DAY GAZETTE Friday is the date every Gens fan has circled on their calendar, it’s the return of the Highway 115 rivalry! The Peterborough Petes will be making their first visit to the Tribute Communities Centre for what will also be the first regular season game this season between the two teams. Friday is the first of seven home games in the month of November, so now is the best time to get hot at home. The Generals return home following an okay weekend just a week ago, getting three of the six available points. Following the thrilling 3-2 OT victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs, Oshawa headed across the border for games against the Flint Firebirds and Saginaw Spirit. Saturday night was a case of old-time hockey when the Generals suffered an 8-7 shootout loss to the Firebirds. The very next afternoon the Generals would drop a 3-2 decision to the Saginaw Spirit, led by 15-year-old phenom Michael Misa. Peterborough will come into Oshawa as one of the Eastern Conference’s top contenders, after they handed the Ottawa 67’s their first loss of the year. At 8-3-1-0, the Petes currently sit tied for 2nd in the Eastern Conference, but just five points ahead of the Generals. All the action in the highly anticipated rivalry game gets underway at 7:35 p.m. at the Tribute Communities Centre.
Last Meeting: As this is the first meeting of the regular season, these two teams last met during 2022 exhibition play, when they met at Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby. Despite the Generals winning handily 5-0, the Petes were missing many of their top players and played the game with a short bench. Oshawa wasn’t at a full lineup either, sitting starting goalie Patrick Leaver, Brett Harrison, and Cameron Butler. With both teams now full swing into their regular season, it will be a big test for the Generals to bring home the win.

With the turn of the calendar month, this is an opportunity for Patrick Leaver to prove he should be in the conversation as one of the top goaltenders in the OHL. After a respectable first month, Leaver finds himself ranked 7th among OHL goaltenders. If the Generals can shut down the Petes’ offense, it will start with goalie Patrick Leaver.
In his second season with the Generals, Cameron Butler has quickly become a fan favourite amongst the Generals faithful. Amongst those leading the way offensively for Oshawa, Butler has already matched his goal totals in a Gens’ jersey from a year ago, in 28 fewer games. Look for Butler to get on the scoresheet against his former team on Friday night.
Recently named the OHL’s October Goalie of the Month, it’s no question the driving force behind Peterborough’s early success has been Michael Simpson. Playing to a 6-2-0-1 record with a 2.22 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage, Simpson stopped 241 of the 261 shots he faced over the course of the October.

Sunday night in Saginaw marked the end of a disappointing cross-border trip for the Generals. At the tail end of a 3-in-3 weekend the Generals lost their only trip to the DOW Event Centre by a score of 3-2. The first period played fairly down the middle for both teams, with a shot clock reading 10-7 in favour of the home Spirit. It wasn’t until midway through the opening frame that someone was able to break the ice, and to no one’s surprise it was 15-year-old exceptional status forward Michael Misa. Misa buried his 10th of the season off a nifty backhand that beat Patrick Leaver. Just four minutes later it was Oshawa’s super-rookie Beckett Sennecke knotting the game up at 1-1 with his fifth of the season. After a tight opening period, the middle 20 minutes went the way of the Spirit, scoring twice on 14 shots towards Leaver. First it was Calem Mangone giving the Spirit the 2-1 lead with his fourth of the season. Next it was Roberto Mancini extending the Spirit lead to 3-1 with his fifth on the year. Despite putting 11 shots towards Andrew Oke, the Gens had little offensive opportunities. Starting his season with less than impressive numbers, Oke was keeping the Spirit ahead in this game stopping 17 of 18 shots thrown his way after two periods. The final frame saw the Generals get a goal back on the scoreboard right away. Less than three minutes into the period, Oshawa native Luke Torrance potted his fourth of the season to make it a 3-2 game. This was as close as Oshawa would get as despite pulling their goalie in the final two minutes, they could not sustain any offensive zone pressure. Patrick Leaver kept his team in the game by stopping 21/24 shots.

VETERANS LEADING THE WAY In a year where the Generals are dressing the youngest roster they have in years, it’s no surprise the tenured Generals have been leading the way both on and off ice the ice this season. Not taking away from the offensive outburst from 16-year-old Beckett Sennecke who already has 10 points in 12 games, it has been by overagers Cameron Butler, Ryan Gagnier, and Lleyton Moore who have been carrying the load for Oshawa. Coming into the beginning of the season, many were worried about the Generals ability to score. Those worries were put to bed very quickly after new head coach Derek Laxdal debuted a first line of Cameron Butler, Calum Ritchie, and Dylan Roobroeck. Lead by OA Butler, the line put together 20 points in their first four games. The icing on the offensive cake was in Niagara when former IceDog Cameron Butler scored one goal and two assists in the team’s 6-3 victory.
Butler has quickly won over the hearts of many GensNation faithful this season. It’s easy to make people love you, especially in GensNation, when you keep putting the puck in the net. Butler has already matched his goal scoring total in a Generals’ jersey with five goals in just 12 games. Last season, it took him 40 games to score his fifth Oshawa goal. Across the forward depth you’ll find fifth year forward Ryan Gagnier. The Tecumseh native is finding his offensive mojo early this year, already scoring three goals and eight assists in just 12 games. In those 12 games, Gagnier has put forward three multi-point efforts including three points on the team’s recent trip to Michigan. Gagnier has been a leader off the ice as well, joining teammate Brett Harrison to deliver season tickets to some loyal fans just before our season got underway.
Moving two zones backwards we’ll find one of the league’s best at their position – he also happens to be your team captain. It took Lleyton Moore just days to put his stamp on the Generals season. After he was named captain, Moore fit right back into his offensive blueliner ways with five points in his first three games. All of which were assists. Known around GensNation as the power play quarterback, Moore continues to dish the puck around the zone with ease. In 12 games, Moore leads the Generals in both assists with 11 and the plus/minus category at a +8. As of November 3rd, Moore sits 10th in points across all OHL defensemen. His first goal of the season came at the end of October when he tied the game late against the east division rival Hamilton Bulldogs – ultimately sending the game to overtime where the Generals would score the victory. Moore is also a leader off the ice just as much as he is on the ice. He is now entering his third season as a Hockey Gives Blood ambassador. This year, for every shot on net by Moore, money is raised for Canada’s Lifeline and Canadian Blood Services. Currently with 23 shots on net, more than 200 dollars has already been raised! While the Generals are in a place where development has never meant more to the franchise, the first month of the OHL season has proven that not only can the coaching staff and fans rely on the team’s veterans, they can expect them to lead this team for the rest of the season and into what everyone hopes to add up to a playoff run.

EARN ATTENTION FROM NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING
The Ontario Hockey League and the Oshawa Generals are proud to announce that Calum Ritchie and Blake Smith join a class of 47 OHL players that have been included on NHL Central Scouting’s October ‘Players to Watch’ List for the 2023 NHL Draft scheduled to take place June 28-29 in Nashville, Tennessee. Forwards Colby Barlow of the Owen Sound Attack and Calum Ritchie of the Oshawa Generals join defenceman Cam Allen of the Guelph Storm in receiving ‘A’ ratings, indicating a potential first round selection. In nine games with the Generals, Ritchie sits tied for the team lead in goals, assists, and overall points with a stat line of four goals, five assists, and nine points. An additional 11 players were assigned ‘B’ ratings indicating a potential second or third round selection while 33, including four goaltenders,
received ‘C’ designations indicating a potential fourth, fifth or sixth round candidate. Generals’ defenseman and Oshawa native Blake Smith was the only other Gen to receive a rating, finding himself with the ‘C’ designation. So far this season, Smith has played 10 games and has just one assist in his point cabinet. Despite the Generals struggles defensively, Smith has proven to be a reliable stay-at-home blueliner and is amongst the Gens top defensemen. Eighteen OHL member teams are represented on the list led by the Flint Firebirds, Kingston Frontenacs, Kitchener Rangers and Sudbury Wolves, each with four players included. The Guelph Storm, London Knights, North Bay Battalion, Ottawa 67’s, Peterborough Petes, Saginaw Spirit and Windsor Spitfires trail with three players respectively. The list includes 25 OHL forwards, 18 defencemen and four goaltenders.

THREE GENERALS NAMED TO
NATIONAL U-17 HOCKEY CHALLENGE
Oshawa Generals rookies David Bedkowski, Ben Danford and Beckett Sennecke have all been named to Hockey Canada’s roster for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Langley and Delta B.C. Bedkowski, the 6’4, 203lb defenceman from Toronto, Ont., was the 36th overall selection by the Generals in the second round of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection.In three games so far this season with the Gens, Bedkowski is still searching for his first career OHL point. Last year with the Richmond Hill Coyotes, Bedkowski scored 10 goals and eight assists in 28 games. Danford, the Madoc Ont., native was Oshawa’s 14th overall selection in the first round of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. In seven games so far this season with the Generals Danford has scored his first career OHL goal for and added one assist for two points on the young season. Last year, as the captain of the Quinte Red Devils, Danford scored seven goals and added 22 assists for 29 points in 26 games. Lastly, Sennecke joined the Generals after being the 8th overall pick in the first round of the 2022 OHL
Priority Selection. The 6′, 160 lb forward currently sits fourth in OHL rookie scoring with 10 points in 12 games. Sennecke wasted no time scoring his first career OHL goal, doing so in his first-ever OHL game, against the Barrie Colts. He’s already put up three goals and four assists in just his first seven OHL games, continuing an impressive scoring touch from a season before where he scored 80 points in 45 games with the Toronto Marlboros. The World U-17 Hockey Challenge returns to the IIHF cycle this season after it was replaced by the Capital City Challenge tournament last season – one where current Calum Ritchie took home a Gold Medal.
