The large number of players that you will be seeing on the ice this season will be coming off back to back OHL championship finals appearances. A great accomplishment but we all know we fell short of our ultimate goal of winning the Robertson trophy and going to the Memorial Cup. The real success of this years team is to return to that level. Three years ago we finished in eighth place followed by a first place and fourth place regular season finishes respectively. The first-place finish and back-to-back finals appearances were the result of the building blocks being put in place seasons before and the team growing up together.

Winning doesn’t happen by accident, and it must be done by doing things the right way.

The men in charge of that will be led by Mario Pouliot and his winning pedigree in junior hockey. Mario will push these players to places they may not have been before but trusting a coach that has won two Memorial Cups the reboot should move quickly. Mike Farrugia will be in his third season behind the bench, and they will be joined by newcomer Derrick Walser who most recently coached in the WHL with the Red Deer Rebels. Derrick was part of the Peterborough Pete’s coaching staff that won the OHL championship and competed in the Memorial Cup in 2023.

The hockey landscape as we know it, is changing and the people to benefit the most will be you the fans and the players. Fans will get to see young players live that they may never have been able to see before. Players with NCAA commits that may have played in other leagues to preserve their eligibility are free to explore the OHL now before going to school.

Players will have the opportunity to extend their playing careers and get the best of both worlds. I suspect by the end of this upcoming season we may have half of our players with NCAA commits. However, make no mistake the OHL/CHL will remain the industry leader in producing NHL draft picks. Look no further then our own Simon Wang and Owen Griffin who had their names called for the San Jose Sharks and the Columbus Blue Jackets respectively this past June in LA. Now you must play your part and fill this building every night. Give these guys true home ice advantage and push them to be there best night in and night out. Go Gens Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AROUND THE OHL AS OF JANUARY 14TH

EAST DIVISION

PETERBOROUGH

P E T E S

Things continue to run smoothly for the Petes, who have built a solid cushion on the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference with a six-game point streak and seven wins in their last ten.

Lately, Peterborough has been winning the tight, low-scoring games with Adam Novotný and Leon Kolarik out at the U20 World Juniors for several weeks. Mostly because of the outstanding play of Easton Rye, the Petes have conceded just nine goals in their past six games.

In an attempt to further solidify their status in the conference, Peterborough made their own moves at the trade deadline. It was not just in solidifying their depth with winger Brett Hammond and d-man Garrett Frazier from Erie.

Just before the deadline, the Petes made a big splash to bring in a top-two scorer in the league: Kieron Walton from Sudbury. They gave up a hefty price of five picks and defender Genc Ula to do it, but the Winnipeg Jets prospect should bring a big jolt to this offense alongside Novotný.

Now that they have their full team back and then some after their latest moves, Peterborough is as good as they have been all season with the hope of emerging from their rebuild to make some noise in the East.

CENTRAL DIVISION

NIAGARA ICEDOGS

Niagara has piled together some wins since their NovemberDecember struggles but continue to be in a dog fight in the Eastern Conference between the fifth to seventh seeds, which are separated by four points.

The IceDogs’ main flaw continues to be team defense, so they brought in Haoxi Wang from the Generals and Jakub Chromiak from the Rangers to bolster the blue line at the trade deadline. So far, Wang has fit in nicely on both sides of the puck with two points in as many games.

This was after Niagara decided to also gain assets for the future by trading one of their top offensive talents and their captain, Kevin He, to the Firebirds for seven picks and ’07 forward Chase Hull. Ethan Czata has since been named team captain.

Even since the He deal and despite the team’s lack of offensive depth, Ryan Roobroeck and Riley Patterson have still been two of the best forwards in the league. Patterson leads the club in scoring with 52 points to date, which is also good enough for fourth highest in the league.

These two alone, along with their deadline acquisitions, can easily help keep Niagara fight for a playoff spot in the East, but they will also need teams like North Bay, Kingston and Peterborough to cool off along the way as well.

MIDWEST DIVISION

LONDON KNIGHTS

The Knights hold a firm top-five spot in the Western Conference with a nine-point margin separating them from fifth and sixth place whilst also being five points back of the Midwest Division lead.

You would think they would attempt to bolster their roster at the trade deadline to keep pace with other teams, but they thought differently. The Knights instead shipped off veterans Ben Wilmott to Barrie and both Sam O’Reilly and Jared Woolley to their archrivals in Kitchener.

London’s vision for the future is now clear: they wanted to begin a retool after their past successes. They can certainly begin that with their separate trade returns of a young defenseman in Jacob Xu and a whooping 14 draft picks – three of them second rounders.

They also have a few other pieces to start building around, mainly Jaxon Cover and Caleb Mitchell. Braidy Wassilyn is going to the NCAA next season, but the Knights should have no problems filling the void with their successful history of scouting and player development.

For now, London can focus on making it back to the playoffs with their current roster in the final two months of the season. Competing down the stretch can certainly speed up the development process for some of their newer faces.

WEST DIVISION

F L I N T FIREBIRDS

Continuing to soar high with one of the league’s best offenses, the Flint Firebirds currently have the lead in a tight West Division by a three-point gap over Windsor.

Before the trade deadline, Flint was expected to be a big buyer in hopes of bolstering their team, and they did so with two of the biggest acquisitions in the league this season: Kevin He from Niagara and Jacob Battaglia from Kingston.

The cost was steep as they gave up a grand total of 15 draft picks in the separate deals, but that is the cost of winning.

So far, both have fit in nicely with Battaglia netting two in his first three games for the Firebirds and He has recorded eight points in his first six.

Even better, Flint’s own stars are still lighting the lamp with Nathan Aspinall leading the league in points with 57 and Alex Kostov tenth in that department with 48. Mason Vaccari also continues his terrific play in goal with three shutouts, the second-most in the OHL. With just over two months left in the season, the Firebirds are thinking more than just playoffs with their roster and still have time to jell together before the serious hockey begins.

GAME DAY PREVIEW The Oshawa Generals begin a busy weekend with their upcoming triple-header beginning tonight against the North Bay Battalion.

The Battalion come to town for the second and final time this season while Oshawa gets set for their third contest against them overall in the 2025/26 campaign with the final meeting scheduled for March 5th in North Bay. Both teams have a win apiece against one another in the season series. North Bay took the season opener on their home ice back in September, but the Generals countered with a 4-0 victory in late-November in what was Jaden Cholette’s second straight shutout victory.

Since their last matchup both sides have seen their seasons turn, but in opposite directions. Oshawa continues their retool with growth and development while the Battalion are in a fight for a playoff spot on the heels of excellent roster depth and goaltending.

As the Gens hope to find their offensive groove again with just four goals in their last three, they will have their hands full tonight as a goalie with tremendous experience and poise in Mike McIvor is expected to start. The Generals did light him up four times in that last North Bay visit.

Brooks Rogowski, Brady Murnane and Leo Laschon will all be available tonight after representing the Generals at the Connor McDavid OHL Top Prospects Game in Peterborough Wednesday night. The same applies for Ryder Cali of the Battalion.

Speaking of top prospects, Tyler Hinde, one of the Generals’ many new and promising talents, has put together some strong efforts since joining Oshawa. The Gens’ 2025 third-round selection has impressed many with his play since joining the team with his skill level and drive.

For North Bay, keep an eye out for Ethan Procyszyn, one of their leading scorers who comes into tonight with 12 points in his last ten games. The Anaheim Ducks prospect gets his offense from outworking his opponents in the corners whilst also showcasing some speed.

LAST GAME RECAP JANUARY 11TH, 2026 The Oshawa Generals hoped to close out the weekend with a win, but were denied as the Barrie Colts defeated them 4-1.

Prior to puck drop, the Generals held a touching tribute and a moment of silence for long-time OHL commissioner of 45 years, David Branch, who sadly passed away last week at age 77.

The Generals also acknowledged players on both teams who competed at the U20 World Junior Championship: Cole Beaudoin and Kashawn Aitcheson who represented team Canada, and Emil Hemming and Onni Kalto who represented team Finland.

It was tight early on as both sides did not have a lot of open ice to work with, but Barrie would capitalize on the power play with Ben Wilmott ripping it off the post and in from the far-side. It was Wilmott’s third goal in as many games with the Colts since being acquired from London.

Barrie would net another one 2:47 later with Whitby, ON, native Justin Handsor one-timing it glove side from just outside the near faceoff circle. Entering the second up 2-0, the Colts kept the foot on the gas pedal with Evan Passmore roofing their third goal 38 seconds in.

Down by three and in need of offense, the Generals got their looks throughout the second, but Ben Hrebik was up to the task, including a diving highlight-reel glove save off Luke Posthumus halfway through the period.

After the Barrie netminder seemed unbeatable, Onni Kalto got the Gens back in it late in the middle frame as he tipped home Harrison Franssen’s centring feed on the doorstep for his first goal since returning from the World Juniors.

Kalto’s tally seemed to give the Generals a spark and they finished the second in much higher spirits, but still went to the dressing room trailing by two entering the third.

The Gens would start the final 20 with their third power play, but would concede a short-handed goal to Emil Hemming as he finished off Cole Beaudoin’s rebound shot, outwaiting Matthew Humphries and tucking it in.

Barrie’s fourth goal ultimately tipped the momentum back in their favor and settled the Generals’ energy down the rest of the way, leading to them earning their revenge for last year’s Conference Finals defeat.

Oshawa drops its second game to the Colts this season on the heels of some great goaltending from Ben Hrebik and Barrie controlling most of the game with their tight, physical defense. Matthew Humphries was once again fantastic with 37 stops but was outdueled in net.
