The large number of players that you will be seeing on the ice this season will be coming off back to back OHL championship finals appearances. A great accomplishment but we all know we fell short of our ultimate goal of winning the Robertson trophy and going to the Memorial Cup. The real success of this years team is to return to that level. Three years ago we finished in eighth place followed by a first place and fourth place regular season finishes respectively. The first-place finish and back-to-back finals appearances were the result of the building blocks being put in place seasons before and the team growing up together.

Winning doesn’t happen by accident, and it must be done by doing things the right way.

ROGER HUNT

VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

The men in charge of that will be led by Mario Pouliot and his winning pedigree in junior hockey. Mario will push these players to places they may not have been before but trusting a coach that has won two Memorial Cups the reboot should move quickly. Mike Farrugia will be in his third season behind the bench, and they will be joined by newcomer Derrick Walser who most recently coached in the WHL with the Red Deer Rebels. Derrick was part of the Peterborough Pete’s coaching staff that won the OHL championship and competed in the Memorial Cup in 2023.

The hockey landscape as we know it, is changing and the people to benefit the most will be you the fans and the players. Fans will get to see young players live that they may never have been able to see before. Players with NCAA commits that may have played in other leagues to preserve their eligibility are free to explore the OHL now before going to school.

Players will have the opportunity to extend their playing careers and get the best of both worlds. I suspect by the end of this upcoming season we may have half of our players with NCAA commits. However, make no mistake the OHL/CHL will remain the industry leader in producing NHL draft picks. Look no further then our own Simon Wang and Owen Griffin who had their names called for the San Jose Sharks and the Columbus Blue Jackets respectively this past June in LA. Now you must play your part and fill this building every night. Give these guys true home ice advantage and push them to be there best night in and night out. Go Gens Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AROUND THE OHL AS OF DECEMBER 22ND

EAST DIVISION

O T TAWA 6 7 ' S

Things continue to run smoothly for the Ottawa 67’s who now find themselves atop of the Eastern Conference with eight wins in ten games due to contributions all throughout the lineup.

Goaltending continues to be Ottawa’s main strength, led by Ryder Fetterolf’s outstanding play all season. His 928 SV% is second-best amongst all goalies and his 1.93 GAA is tops in the league. Jaeden Nelson has also been solid right behind him with his SV% above .900 as well.

The team’s forward depth has been outstanding as of late as eight of their 12 forwards are up to 20 or more points.

Cooper Foster leads the way in scoring and carries 12 points in his last ten, but Ottawa solidified their depth with the acquisition of Sam McCue from Brantford.

What makes the 67’s even more of an offensive threat is their blue line contributing with Ondrej Ruml, Frankie Marrelli, Connor Bewick and Ryan White all up to over ten points and Kohyn Eshkawkogan standing out with 27 to date.

A defensive juggernaut that can keep up offensively, Ottawa not only owns the best record in the conference, but in the league overall at the halfway mark of the season.

CENTRAL DIVISION

NORTH BAY BATTALION

Another Eastern team that continues to pick up the pace, the North Bay Battalion have worked themselves into a tie for fourth in the conference with six wins in their past ten games.

Everyone contributes to North Bay’s lineup both offensively and defensively. Eleven forwards are up to at least ten points with Ethan Procyszyn and Nicholas Wellenreiter tied for the team lead in points – the two have combined for 19 points in each of their last ten.

Despite having a strong team culture, the Battalion still made a move to bring in veteran Kaden Pitre from the Firebirds to keep the offense steady. Despite giving up Ihnat Pazii in the deal, Pitre has fit in very nicely with his new team, putting up eight points in his first nine games.

Let’s not forget that North Bay can also keep up on the other side of the puck as a top-ten defensive team. This is mostly thanks to goalie Jack Lisson continuing his terrific story – a former 15th round draft choice of the team is top-five in SV% in 15 starts this year.

The Battalion will strike you as a team that can keep up on both sides of the puck with everyone getting involved. The back half of the season will be tough, but these are still excellent strides forward in the club’s rebuild.

MIDWEST DIVISION

KITCHENER RANGERS

Also with six wins in their last ten games, the Kitchener Rangers have taken a slim lead in the Midwest Division as well as a top-two seed in the Western Conference.

The Rangers continue to form their solid two-way culture as a top-five defensive team and a top-ten scoring team. As the Generals saw in their first matchup against them not long ago, Kitchener does not allow many opportunities with coach Jussi Ahokas’ defensive structure.

It also helps to have the usual suspects in Christian Humphreys, Jack Pridham and Tanner Lam driving the offense with help off the blue line from Cameron Reid, who is set to compete in the U20 World Juniors with the Canadian team.

In need of a supporting cast up front, the Rangers made a trade to bring in Erie Otters’ leading scorer, Dylan Edwards.

The club will hope that Edwards fits well into their top six to take a bit of weight off their leading scorers throughout the remainder of the season.

WEST DIVISION

F L I N T FIREBIRDS

The Flint Firebirds have caught fire – no pun intended – winning 16 of their last 20 games, including eleven straight during this stretch, to climb to third in the Western Conference.

After a slow start to the year, Flint’s scoring has shifted into high gear as they are now ranked top-five in goals. Nathan Aspinall has been on fire in the last month with 15 points in his last ten games. He has taken over the league lead in scoring, currently up to 51 points.

He and Alex Kostov have been two of the best players in the OHL during this stretch as the two have combined for 29 points in each of their last ten. Jimmy Lombardi has also jumped up to 21 goals and is in a three-way tie for third in that department.

On the other side of the puck, netminder Mason Vaccari has put up solid numbers while leading the league in wins with 19. With solid goaltending and penalty killing, the Firebirds can make life difficult for opposing offenses and fill the net the other way.

Flint has taken things over in the Western Conference and rightfully so with their talent level. Look for them to make a move or two before the trade deadline to bolster their forward core to get some more scoring help behind their top guns.

ONNI KALTO NAMED TO FINLAND WORLD JUNIORS TEAM

Generals’ forward Onni Kalto has been named to Team Finland’s U20 World Junior Championship team, the club announced today.

Kalto was Oshawa’s first round choice at the CHL Import Draft this past summer, selected 41st overall from the TPS Turku U20 team in Finland.

In 44 games last season with the U20 TPS Turku team, Kalto recorded 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points.

So far this year, Kalto has been off to a solid start at the OHL level with the Generals, tallying five goals and nine points in 30 games.

With his simple brand of hockey that includes driving to the net, Kalto should fit in nicely with Team Finland’s style of play.

The IIHF World Junior Championship gets underway from Minnesota with all teams beginning Round Robin play on Boxing Day. Finland begins their tournament against Denmark.

GAME DAY PREVIEW After a week off for the holiday break, the Oshawa Generals return to action as they host their rivals up the 115, the Peterborough Petes.

This marks the fourth meeting of the season between the long-time foes and the first meeting since Remembrance Day in Peterborough, where the Petes took a convincing victory in front of their home crowd.

Before the break, the Generals left off with two great battles on the road with the Knights and Spirit in back-to-back games but came up short in both offensive showdowns, 5-3 in London and 6-4 in Saginaw.

As both rebuilding teams enter the second half of the season, the Petes have found more momentum in there’s as they have climbed to a top-four spot in the Eastern Conference on the heels of a talented forward group.

Despite Peterborough taking two of the three matchups between both sides this year, the Generals did take the last meeting between the two at the TCC back in October in a wild game that featured ten total goals.

In fact, the Gens have tended to dominate this rivalry on their home ice in recent memory, defeating Peterborough 14 times in their last 19 visits to Oshawa. They will hope to keep that trend intact tonight.

Onni Kalto is still absent as he competes with team Finland at the U20 World Juniors while the Generals continue to monitor the day-to-day injuries of defenders Haoxi Wang and Leo Laschon among others. Peterborough is also without leading scorer Adam Novotný, who is also competing at the U20 World Juniors with Czechia.

With key parts of the Generals’ lineup out of action, Porter Byrd-Leitner will have another opportunity to contribute offensively. One of many newcomers to the organization this season, Byrd-Leitner has brought a great skillset and is currently riding a mini hot streak with four points in his last five games since getting time in Oshawa’s top-six.

For the Petes, they will hope that 2025’s first overall selection Kaden McGregor can step up. After a slow start, McGregor has showcased the talents that made him last year’s top choice since returning from the U17 World Challenge, where he represented team Canada White. He also has four points in three games against Oshawa this season.

LAST GAME RECAP DECEMBER 20TH, 2025 The Oshawa Generals and Saginaw Spirit combined for an offensive shootout in the final game before the holiday break, but it was the Generals on the other side of a 6-4 final.

Haoxi Wang and Leo Laschon were among the notable Generals out tonight due to injuries. With two defenders out of action, Oshawa went with 13 forwards and five D-men tonight.

Jaden Cholette made a second consecutive start after making 27 stops last night in London. He would be tested early by a Spirit team that he made 32 saves against back on October 5th.

Saginaw opened the scoring early on after Nikita Klepov buried his own rebound glove side from the slot off the rush, sending stuffed animals flying over the glass on the Spirit’s Teddy Bear Toss night.

Play resumed after an approximate seven-minute delay and the Spirit continued their strong start with two more tallies in the first ten minutes. Klepov netting another one from outside the circles and Xander Velliaris followed up 2:15 later by poking in a rebound on his backhand.

Isaac Gravelle came into the game after Saginaw put up three in the first half of the opening period. The goaltending change gave the Gens a spark as they got a bit more zone time in the next few shifts and Vadim Smirnov eventually got them on the board after snapping it over Stepan Shurygin’s left shoulder on a partial breakaway.

Getting one back late in the first, the Generals started the second by slightly tightening things up and getting more scoring chances.

Porter Byrd-Leitner got them back to within one close to the mid-way mark as he wired one blocker-side past Shurygin from just inside near circle.

Moments after, the Gens came through on their fifth power play to tie the game thanks to Harrison Franssen netting his second goal in as many nights. Then, just eight seconds after the neutral zone draw, Aiden O’Donnell came right back into the attacking zone and he ripped one over Shurygin’s blocker.

On the heels of four straight goals – three of them in 47 seconds – the Gens found themselves in front after going down by three early and took a one-goal lead to the third. Oshawa defended their lead for much of the final frame, but the Spirit eventually broke through.

After an extended shift in the Generals’ end, Saginaw was able to net the equalizer thanks to James Guo roofing one from the slot. Gravelle had made 18 straight stops before the game-tying goal since entering the game back in the first.

The third continued with Oshawa pushing for the go-ahead goal, but after Shurygin stood tall, Nic Sima netted another one for the Spirit off the rush to give them the eventual game-winner with just over three minutes left. Carson Harmer put it away soon after with an empty netter.

Oshawa put up a good fight as they followed up a rocky start to the game with a strong middle period but could not finish off the opposition as it got down to the wire.

Give Isaac Gravelle credit as he made 20 saves in relief, but Stepan Shurygin kept his Spirit in it and they were able to claw their way back in the third.
