D2Alert Makes Certain You’re EAS-Legal and Does It Cost-Effectively The FCC has been focusing more on noncompliance with respect to emergency alert system (EAS) messaging, even for low-power TV stations. That means now is a good time to make sure your station has implemented an EAS compliance solution that keeps it legal – and helps you avoid costly fines.

The way many stations handle EAS now is either to bring the EAS signal from the EAS system into the flow upstream of the encoder, which adds in the signal, or to take a downstream key and mix that alert into the stream, switching to the EAS message when an alert happens. What’s wrong with these models? Taking your signal to baseband and back requires extra time and extra gear making it more expensive and complex. D2Alert on the D2Flex-5220 gateway solves that problem, taking the EAS signal as a preencoded TSoIP stream directly from the EAS system, interrupting all selected programs with that particular signal.

It’s a simple switch – no need for decoding and re-encoding. The D2Flex will see the stream coming in and automatically switch to it. It’s a full-screen EAS message for the duration of the alert, and it keeps the FCC happy.

Because you can deploy your EAS box locally, where the transmitter is, you can deliver content across the country via SRT but insert EAS messages locally, as dictated by local events, without breaking the signal

into baseband.

Selectively inserting local EAS alerts as required, you know you’ll be in compliance with FCC regulations.

You’ll also have the flexibility to select which channels in your digital transport stream receive the alert, and which should continue uninterrupted.

If, for example, you want to ensure the EAS message goes out on your main or .1 channel, but you’d rather your .2, .3 and .4 subchannels continue on as usual, you can set up your system accordingly. Or, if you prefer the look of an EAS crawl for your locally encoded primary channel, you might do that and then use the fullscreen EAS slate on your subchannels, which may be coming over satellite, that you don't necessarily want to decode and re-encode. In short, along with a straightforward, cost-effective solution for staying EAS-legal, you have the flexibility you need to deliver EAS messages to the right channels at the right time – and even a few options for enhancing the on-screen display.
