Major Progress in TV Spot Automation

The Basics of 5G from Viking Satcom

5G is the fifth-generation wireless technology for digital cellular networks. Over the last few years, it has been a topic of global conversation and appears to be the hot topic of this year’s show circuit. A mitigation solution must be in place prior to the 5G launch or disruption will occur. Satellite operators are in line to be affected most. In almost every case, these operators will be required to invest in new equipment in order to avoid disruption of services. Regardless of their global location, satellite operators are having to react. That means coordinating with consultants, integrators, installers and manufacturers in what is becoming a very crowded space. Filter manufacturers such as Microwave Filter Company in East Syracuse, New York, have deployed many 5G mitigation solutions. Many of these filter solutions are custom designed to meet the specification of each geographic location. As client demand has increased, MFC is relying on corporate partners such as Viking Satcom, a distributor for commercial satellite equipment, to help disperse units to a growing audience. Let’s take the United States, for example. It has been proposed that the U.S. clear mid-band spectrum for 5G in two phases: PHASE 1 FILTER: Bandpass 3820 – 4200 MHz Rejection: 30 dB Min from 3800 to 3805 MHz

With both technology and audience behavior evolving, the media industry continues to experience transformation. One of the most significant changes has been the shift from over-the-air spots broadcast to a TV-only audience, to integrated omnichannel campaigns that include digitally delivered addressable ads. As omnichannel campaigns increase in complexity, automation to streamline both traditional and marketplace workflows becomes more important. WideOrbit was founded more than 20 years ago with a simple goal: Make it easier to buy and sell advertising. We’re excited to continue a long history of innovation and continuous process improvement as we introduce automation to address today’s challenges, while also preparing for what lies ahead. From frontend to backend, significant improvements are helping broadcasters, agencies and advertisers improve efficiency. Automated marketplace transactions simplify broadcaster access to new demand from digital-first buyers who may not have previously bought local broadcast TV. WO Marketplace surfaces that demand so broadcasters can evaluate bids alongside currently unsold inventory, allowing them to accept only the offers that best meet their needs. Often these are buyers seeking near-to-air inventory, which increases pricing competition, in turn increasing inventory value. While this automated marketplace effort has taken time, it’s already transacting tens of millions of dollars annually, new money to broadcasters

Remote Integration (REMI) for Parabolic Microphones Remote Integration (REMI) has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years. Today, the technology allows cameras to be effectively operated from a remote studio over IP with negligible latency. Parabolic microphones are a staple in live sports productions, capturing sounds of the on-field action from afar. Can the same REMI technology be used to allow a remote operator to follow the action with a parabolic microphone? Yes. Klover Products is working with Remote Camera Technology (RCT) to jointly develop this exact application. Klover Products manufactures the popular Klover MiK parabolic microphones that are used extensively for live sports broadcasts. RCT manufactures a unique remote operator system that can be

mounted on any fluid head. There are no mechanical connections to the fluid head such as pulleys, encoders, etc. This makes the system incredibly versatile and compatible with expensive heads already owned by broadcasters. In addition, the movement response is exceptionally fast over IP. The innovative RCT Fluid Remote, combined with the RCT Robotic Head, allows a cameraman at a remote site to operate the television camera as if he were next to the action. In the same way, a Klover MiK parabolic microphone can be installed on the robotic head, instead of the camera, allowing an operator at a remote site to operate the parabolic mic as if they were at the event. The modular design of the Klover MiK makes it ideal for new applications such as this.

Five Sounds With Pinar Toprak By Brad Pack, Senior Content Manager, Vintage King Audio

Pinar Toprak is a renowned composer and instrumentalist with a diverse body of work spanning film, television and video games. We recently had the pleasure of chatting with Pinar for our Five Sounds With... series. Read on to learn how she captured the iconic sounds of “Captain Marvel,” “Stargirl” and more.

CAPTAIN MARVEL For “Captain Marvel,” the main thing was figuring out the thematic ideas for the three main characters. All of the Hala scenes are very analog synth-driven. I have a Moog One, which you can hear at the end of the film. I’m also a huge fan of U-He plug-ins. All of the compositions were done in my studio, I have a great team that helps

out with programming. I track everything in Cubase through a UAD Thunderbolt Quad Apollo. I use the Slate Digital VMS for analog instruments, which I love. After the tracks are approved, we send the mockups over for orchestration. They make copies for us, then we go to the studio and record. The recording took place in London, mostly at Abbey Road, which was incredible. We had a 90-piece orchestra. Marvel likes to record everyone at the same time, which is also how I like to work.

STARGIRL One of the luxuries of working on that show was that we had a live orchestra for all 13 episodes of the show, which is not very common. “Stargirl” has a lot of hybrid and synth elements, but at its core, it’s paying homage to “Back to the Future.” I felt that the score would benefit massively

Broadcasters Show Daily In many cases, however, it may be more efficient to have the movement of the parabolic mic follow the motion of the camera as both are following the action on the field. A parabolic microphone installed on a second robotic head can be synched to the motion of the camera motion, thereby allowing it to follow the movement of the camera. Both heads can be mounted next to the field of play or even on a side-line cart. The synchronized camera/parabolic mic motion is being demonstrated at NAB in the Remote Camera Technology booth #C5334.

KRYPTON The show is about Superman’s home planet, Krypton. Creatively, it was really fun because they didn’t have anything set in stone for how that world was going to sound, so I had a lot of creative freedom. NANUK Offers Hard Cases for Drone Protection Drones have become one of the most valuable tools in dynamic media and content production, allowing users to put incredibly high-resolution cameras in the air rapidly, while covering multiple angles and perspectives in a short amount of time. This equipment is highly versatile, but also extremely fragile. NANUK hard cases give pilots the ability to protect their expensive drone equipment in challenging weather and harsh environments, providing the peace-of-mind to arrive and thrive anywhere. Many drone platforms and ground stations require some setup and tear down in operations to allow the drone hull to fold away into a smaller transportable size. This modularity comes in the form of replaceable parts, batteries,

controls and accessories. NANUK’s hard cases allow an operator to both protect and store their equipment with custom, laser cut cavities that cradles equipment and keeps it safe and organized in a waterproof, dust-proof and crush-proof environment. The dedicated cavities keep the gear in an organized, see-everythingat-a-glance, toolbox-like setup, preventing the loss of small parts. Whether from NANUK or other brands, there are multiple styles of bags and cases for drone transport and picking the right version can drastically increase your productivity while protecting your gear. Some drone manufacturers include basic transport cases with their drone and accessories. While these cases offer convenient mobility for the product and

Broadcasters Show Daily while in transit from the factory to consumer, most are produced to keep costs as low as possible and therefore are made from and cardboard inexpensive foam. Because of this, there are many aftermarket options available that can differ greatly in the level of protection they offer. From soft backpacks to hard shell cases like NANUK’s drone line of hard case protection, there’s an option for every drone platform. Either way, it’s highly recommended that expensive drones and accessories get the proper protection. Soft-shell bags and cases come in a couple forms, either as a backpack or under-shoulder bag with handles or with a shoulder strap. While lightweight and flexible, the soft-shell nature of a backpack or soft-bag commonly results in less

protection both from high impact and environmental elements such as rain and dust. Soft-shell-type bags and cases are often used for short term transport and light-duty use. Hard cases by nature offer larger, more rigid structure, which provides protection in transport, while being stored and in the field. But shop carefully; not all hard cases are certified waterproof, dustproof, impact proof or high quality. Your drone investment should be protected by brands like NANUK who understand what it truly means to protect valuable gear. This is not the place to cut corners. Buy the best waterproof, protective case you can so you can enjoy your drone for years to come.

A System Approach to Signal Processing & Centralized System Software Come by the LYNX Technik NAB booth #C4721 for a hands-on demonstration of the company’s new LynxCentraal, a centralized system software tool for management of its entire hardware portfolio. Another highlight will be a system demonstration of a full range of yellobriks as well as the new yellobrik rack controller, which eases the process of controlling and configuring a yellobrik system installation.

yellobrik System Installations The LYNX Technik yellobriks are modular in nature and often serve as throwdown “bricks” in a variety of applications from live sports and events to remote production and many other uses in between. yellobriks are continuing to evolve as one of the most reliable and extensively used solutions in critical live broadcast delivery and gaining popularity as a full system approach. They are mounted into yellobrik rack trays to build larger conversion/extension/signal processing systems, often with optional fiber adapter kits. Up to 14 modules can be mounted in as little

as 1RU of rack space, with an optional second external AC/DC power supply connected ensuring a seamless switch from the primary to backup AC should one source fail. The yellobrik rack controller (RCT 1012) allows a facility to combine the control tasks for up to 12 yellobriks housed in a yellobrik rack. Using just a single slot as part of a yellobrik rack system, the RCT 1012 removes the timeconsuming job of updating, configuring, and setting parameters of individual yellobrik modules one at a time, offering a bulk update method instead. With the brand new yellobrik server (SRV 1000), LYNX significantly expands the application possibilities of a large yellobrik system. The SRV 1000 – once integrated in the system – offers extended possibilities of control, monitoring via SNMP or Lynx Remote Control Interface (Lynx RCTI), as well as various system-wide functions, such as AutoControl, CustomControl and the possibility to execute system-wide backups and restores. Executive Officer Mike Budge said, “We are delighted to announce our formal partnership with Wave Central and look forward to leveraging their outstanding reputation in North America and supporting the team in their efforts to develop the future of sports technology in the region. The partnership is the first major milestone of the new era of Domo Broadcast Systems.” Wave Central assumes responsibility for all customer support and offers broadcast clients its highly praised and admired five-day turnaround on repairs, which will be supplied from Wave Central’s Carlisle, Pennsylvania, facility. Customers receive shorter lead times of professional wireless products as well as the cutting-edge technology that the North American market demands. Bringing together Broadcast Wireless Systems and DTC Domo and the confidence of redundant powering, the company continually sees broadcasters incorporating yellobriks as permanent core infrastructure, both static and mobile.

LynxCentraal Software Serving to unify the LYNX Technik suite of software solutions, LynxCentraal combines the functionality of its three software tools; APPolo, yelloGUI and greenGUI applications into a new solution. By consolidating the functions (as well as adding new features) of these software tools under a single software system, user management is instantly simplified. Previously, users would require three different software systems to operate their LYNX Technik system installations. Now, a single software can be used alongside the LYNX Technik greenMachine, yellobrik and Series 5000 hardware. Features of the software have been designed to offer enhanced operational efficiency and ease of use. It is now possible for users to control all aspects of operator permissions and accessible features. Users can create and build customized virtual software control inter-

applications. Multi-coax composites using stranded center conductor cables are employed due to extremely low attenuation achieved by its low density PTFE proprietary lamination process and silver plated copper conductor and double shield design. Founded in 1970, Insulated Wire, Inc. developed a unique PTFE lamination process and applied it to the manufacturing of wire and cable. This process allowed IW to manufacture products of unprecedented reliability along with smaller diameters. Combining the lamination process with a patented shield design allowed IW to become one of the Web3 (Cont’d. from p. 1)
