As I think is the case with most families, my brother, sister and I had household tasks to perform to earn our allowance – until we were too old to get an allowance and just had to do the chores … hey! I see what my parents did there! One of the tasks was loading the dishwasher after dinner, then – horror of horrors! – having to unload it.

Dishwashing duty always came after a long discussion with my mom on how to properly load the dishwasher – followed by a long discussion on what we did wrong Usually, the first mistake was not securing plastic bowls and lids on the top shelf, so they flipped over, collected water and didn’t dr y We learned how to delicately extract the offending dishes from the rack so we didn’t drench ever ything below it Or there was the opposite, placing them on the bottom shelf so they melted! If there’s a Tupper ware heaven, I sent a lot of stuff there

The other common mistake was failing to notice when the dishwasher was finished, because you had to open the door a little so the dishes would dr y Sorr y, Mommy! Can we just leave them in the racks to dr y? No? OK, hand me the dish towel

It ’ s nice that modern dishwashers, like the Bosch 500 series featured on our cover, have most of that figured out for us Of course, I no longer have to load the family dishwasher or any, for that matter, since I don’t have a dishwasher!

Speaking of my mom and things she would say (in a much gentler way), when I was reluctant to take a nap, that I should just lay down,

close my eyes and I’d be asleep My views on naps have changed radically, but the whole “just lay down, close my eyes ” thing doesn’t always work when it comes to sleep. So I’m fascinated by gadgets that help people sleep, as I write this month about Blueair’s new products, including the Mini Restful Sunrise Clock Air Purifier with its soothing wake-up call

Once I do fall asleep, I hate being woken up by a screaming alarm.
