editor Happy 250th, America! Our publisher, Mrs. Oser, asked our talented art director, Yasmine Brown, to mark this occasion with a red, white and blue cover for our July issue. It was a great idea and Yasmine did a fabulous job.

While not quite as old as our country, the topic of our main article in this issue centers on the Haviland brand of Limoges porcelain. The company is a perfect example of how dishware manufacturers have drawn upon not only national history, but artistic history as well. This gives me a great excuse to talk about my obsession with British porcelain transferware, specifically the Johnson Brothers brand.

Stemming from my own personal family history, setting the Christmas table with my parents’ anniversary set of the popular Friendly Village pattern, my collection has grown immensely over the years – including my parents’ set. Though the Johnson Brothers are considered a British dishware maker, the company has deep roots in the USA. Founded in 1883 by four brothers – Alfred, Frederick, Henry and Robert Johnson – in Staffordshire, England, the brand took inspiration from the works of the Johnsons’ maternal grandfather, Alfred Meakin. Meakin founded his company in 1875 and exported its decorated porcelain to many countries, including the United States of America.

I own a set of 1930s brown transferware from Meakin, Fair Winds, commemorating the Chinese export trade to America. The intricately detailed copper engravings depict maritime vessels such as the Friendship of Salem or U.S.S. Constitution, surrounded by borders illustrating 19th-century New York Harbor and the United States’ traditional motto, “E pluribus unum.”

Just as the Johnson Brothers depicted English villages and landmarks such as Old British Castles, the factory also included American themes as the brand’s popularity grew in the States, thanks not only to its affordability, but its sturdiness. Many a settler packed Johnson Brothers dinnerware into covered wagons as our nation expanded West. The company even sent Robert Johnson to New York City to oversee the company’s North American expansion.

In the 1930s, Johnson Brothers began making the Historic America pattern, featuring such images as a View of Boston, the Erie Canal, the Alamo, the U.S. Capitol Building and Covered Wagons and the Rocky Mountains.

Johnson Brothers also produced a Wild Turkeys Native American Windsor Ware set, which continues to be popular on Thanksgiving tables. Oh, yes, I have a turkey platter.

The Arizona-based department store chain Diamond’s commissioned the Johnson Brothers to mark the state’s 1912 entry into the United States by creating the Arizona Plate, a depiction of the Grand Canyon sold in different colors. I’ve got a multi-color and red transferware plate.

So while I may not have my house decked out in red, white and blue for this historic occasion – don’t make me say it, semiquincentennial – I have my patriotic Johnson Brothers and Alfred Meakin transferware on display and on the table (year round).

WVH, a global authority in premium wood surface design for over 50 years, introduces Alma, an innovative system of acoustical architectural wall panels created in collaboration with Mexican-born multidisciplinary designer Alfonso Verduzco. Inspired by Mexico’s rich material heritage and the enduring relationship between material, craft, and space, the collection explores how the region’s cultural and architectural identity can be reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.

For the inaugural launch, the nine-part series debuts with three carefully considered designs: Sagrado, Sendero and Reflejo – each a distinct expression of native, organic materiality and WVH’s signature craftsmanship.

Alma, meaning “soul” in Spanish, reflects a philosophy where structural elements embody physical presence, tactile depth and material intelligence.

Translating historical references, landmarks and craft traditions into a functional modern format, each panel is conceived as integrated architectural composition.

Grounded in material honesty and acoustic performance, the panel systems function as structural design features rather than a superficial applied finish – allowing texture,

light and rhythm to work in tandem to transform walls into meaningful spatial experiences. Alma is conceived as architecture rather than decoration, transforming walls from background surfaces into defining elements of space.

“I believe materials carry history,” Verduzco said. “When we design them honestly, a wall becomes more than a surface; it becomes part of the architecture.”

Honoring the way raw materials interact with the natural world over time, each panel embraces structure and a rhythmic movement in a manner that feels both calm and architecturally refined. Lava stone brings density and texture drawn from cooled volcanic flows. Copper introduces warmth and natural patina over time. Obsidian adds reflective depth and sharp material contrast.

Inspired by monumental nailstudded wooden doors found throughout historic Mexican architecture, Sagrado, meaning “sacred” in Spanish, represents the scale, structure and permanence that define the entry point to space. Pairing the ancient Shou Sugi Ban (charred wood) technique on solid ash wood with solid copper inserts, each panel catches and reflects light in beautiful and unexpected ways.

Over time, the copper develops a natural patina, shifting

the surface subtly as it ages, creating a profound physical presence that echoes the character of hand-forged hardware of traditional doors and gates.

A tribute to the volcanic stone streets of Mexico, worn smooth over centuries by weather, movement and time, Sendero integrates natural lava stone into the foundational structure of black ash wood. Left intentionally raw to preserve its density, granular surface and volcanic texture, each inlaid stone results in a one-of-a-kind panel surface.

The system reflects the organic flow of historic pathways, generating a profound rhythmic variation through material sequencing.

Designed around the reflective properties of obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass, Reflejo creates tension between transparency and depth. Combining gray maple veneer with inlays of obsidian, the “lava glass” elements introduce moments of light and reflection within the linear wood composition. The result is a surface panel system that responds quietly to the surrounding environment, creating a subtle contrast of texture, shadow and visual dynamism.

The collaboration brings together Verduzco's materialdriven design philosophy and WVH's decades of expertise in veneer craftsmanship, manufacturing and product development. Together, they have created a collection that balances cultural inspiration, architectural expression and scalable production.

In the year of its 40th anniversary, Cina kitchen is being recognized internationally.

The Cina kitchen by Vico Magistretti for Schiffini won the EDIDA Awards 2026, among the most prestigious honors in international design, confirming the enduring relevance and design strength of this iconic model.

To celebrate its centenary, Schiffini pays tribute to one of its most iconic models: Cina, the masterpiece designed in 1986 by Vico Magistretti. The characteristic recessed handle, formed by a groove on the upper part of the door or

CBA Updates Engineering Standards Including New Nonstick Chapter The Cookware & Bakeware Alliance has released an updated edition of its Engineering Standards for Cookware and Bakeware, the industry’s primary technical reference for product safety, performance testing and materials compliance. The most significant addition to the 2026 edition is a dedicated, 32-page chapter on nonstick coatings, a topic that has grown in regulatory and consumer importance in recent years.

Section 21, titled “Manufacturers Testing for Nonstick Finishes on Cookware and Bakeware,” outlines standardized test methods to help manufacturers evaluate the performance and durability of nonstick coatings across a simulated product lifecycle.

The nonstick chapter arrives as the category faces heightened scrutiny from regulators and consumers alike, with federal and state-level legislation targeting PFAS and other chemical compounds associated with certain coating chemistries. Having a standardized testing framework gives manufacturers and retailers a consistent benchmark for evaluating products and for demonstrating that products meet established safety criteria.

Recognizing the chapter’s standalone relevance, for the first time, the CBA is making it available as a separate purchase.

The nonstick chapter can be downloaded as a PDF ($250) or obtained as a PDF plus printed copy ($350), giving companies the option to access that section without purchasing the full manual.

Beyond the nonstick additions, the 2026 manual spans 25 sections covering the full range of cookware and bakeware materials and construction methods, from aluminum, stainless steel and cast iron to porcelain enamel, silicone, glass and clad materials.

Sections address everything from handle and fitting specifications and metric sizing procedures to mechanical safety guidelines, induction compatibility, and organic thermoset exterior finishes.

The standards are developed and maintained by volunteer representatives from CBA member companies who serve on the Engineering Standards Committee and its subcommittees. The committee meets regularly to evaluate emerging materials, technologies, and regulatory developments and to update or create new standards

accordingly.

The CBA points out that comparable technical standards purchased independently through organizations such as NSF International or similar bodies typically run $1,500 to $3,000 per year, making member access a meaningful part of the overall value of CBA membership.

Non-members can purchase the complete manual in two formats: a PDF-only download ($1,000) or a PDF plus printed copy ($1,100).

While CBA membership is open only to companies with substantial operations and headquarters in the United States, the organization notes that overseas factories supplying the U.S. market have equal reason to work from the same standards.

Compliance with U.S. safety and quality benchmarks has become a practical necessity, driven by consumer demand for transparency, and by an expanding body of state and federal product safety legislation.

For overseas factories, purchasing and

implementing the CBA Engineering Standards signals to U.S. brands, importers, and retailers a commitment to the same safety and quality framework their domestic partners follow. Fran Attilio, CBA managing director, frames it this way: “Factories around the world can show their dedication to quality and product performance by purchasing and following the engineering standards. Reissuing Fleurs d’Auteuil revives a living heritage, striking a balance between formal freedom, technical prowess and timeless floral poetry. This emblematic pattern is a revolutionary milestone in the history of Haviland porcelain.

Created in 1873 under the artistic direction of Félix Bracquemond, it was the first design to emerge from the creation studio of the time, the Atelier d’Auteuil, established in Paris. Inspired by the ornamental language of the 18th century, Fleurs d’Auteuil introduced a true aesthetic revolution, breaking away from rigid symmetrical compositions.

Its immediate success sparked a wave of innovation, freeing porcelain aesthetics from established conventions and transforming traditional working methods. A technical the decor introduced pioneer, chromolithography on colored paper, combining industrial precision with artisanal refinement.

The composition brings together 12 types of flowers, including double roses, tulips, crested anemones, bearded irises, carnations, poppies, forget-me-nots and bellflowers, creating a true botanical paradise. It draws its inspiration from the history of the Atelier d’Auteuil’s neighborhood.

From Alphonse Alphand’s florists garden to the renowned Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil, these havens for lovers of rare flowers were a clear source of inspiration for Léon Pallandre. A key figure of the 1870s and 1880s, Pallandre infused the Maison with a unique elegance, reinterpreting Rococo refinement with a poetic approach that combined ornamentation, intense color and modernity.

The Fleurs d’Auteuil collection represents the essence of the brand.

Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation $2.5M in Grants to Disabled Youths Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation announced more than $2.5 million in approved and continuing grant commitments supporting organizations that are expanding access to education, employment and technology-enabled career pathways for youth and young adults with disabilities across the United States.

The 2026 grant portfolio includes both continuing multiyear investments and newly approved projects that advance MEAF’s long standing focus on assistive technology, accessible digital tools, inclusive workforce development, and employer readiness, with particular emphasis on careers in technology, advanced manufacturing and skilled trades.
