Pantone’s Color of the Year Cloud Dancer Drifts Along

Of all the “color of the year” announcements each winter, the most anticipated is Pantone’s, which come along with expressive names. This year’s Pantone Color of the Year has already built up a lot of talk – not so much about the color, but maybe, lack of color?

editor Like a lot of people, I look forward to hearing what companies announce as their color of the year. We featured some of them in our 2026 Buyers Guide: California Paints’ Cactus Valley green, Benjamin Moore’s Silhouette with “espresso hues” and “subtle notes of charcoal,” Owens Corning’s Evergreen Mist for roof shingles, Minwax’s earthy Special Walnut, Pittsburgh Paints’ Warm Mahogany and PPG’s yellow-green Secret Safari.

But, of course, the most anticipated color of the year is Pantone’s, as we see in the cover story. The soft white Cloud Dancer raised eyebrows because it’s basically just whitish.

The name reminds me of one of my favorite movies, “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” when Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth) is teaching Griet (Scarlett Johansson) how to see colors as an artist does. He summons her to a window and asks her to look at the clouds.

“What color are they?” he asks.

“White,” she says. “No. No, they’re not white. Yellow. Blue. And gray.

“There are colors in the clouds.”

Vermeer, who has been watching her earnestly and not the clouds, smiles softly.

“Now you understand,” he says.

One company decided to play off Cloud Dancer in the most colorful way.

I’ve heard of clashing colors before, but I didn’t see this coming.

Lighting Italy’s Da Vittorio Glistens

Its spacious interiors are illuminated by a custom suspended version of Pòta!: brass rods intersect and house a handcrafted glass lighting unit that integrates modern LED filament technology. On the marble tables, the portable Giulietta BE lamp is customised with the DaV logo.

Beyond gastronomy, Da Vittorio Relais & Châteaux offers exclusive hospitality through La Dimora, a charming boutique hotel with a selection of rooms and suites defined by timeless romantic elegance. In the hotel’s corridors, the Light Stick lamp in a brass finish illuminates the spaces with refined minimalism, casting a soft, diffuse lighting along the walls thanks to the LEDs housed in its structure.

Catellani & Smith’s creations also find their place in the estate’s park. Along pathways surrounded by rich vegetation, many outdoor lamps such as Fil de Fer, Syphasera, Syphasfera and Syphaduepassi shape the landscape with striking light effects. Boiserie Rastelli melds aesthetics, access

In today’s kitchen design, the management of vertical surfaces has become a strategic component. Boiserie and equipped back panels evolve into true architectural devices, able to organize the operational area, modulate spatial perception and connect functional zones within increasingly fluid layouts.

The boiserie of the Beluga kitchen, designed by Ferruccio Laviani for Rastelli in the Tobak ash finish, appears as a continuous cladding that incorporates storage compartments, shelves and integrated accessories. By showcasing objects and utensils, it ensures immediate accessibility.

At the same time, its horizontal modularity and material continuity create a spatial pathway that unifies the entire kitchen system while defining its functional hierarchies. In

this configuration, the equipped back panel becomes more than a support surface: it extends the worktop, transforming the wall into an equally active component.

A hybrid evolution emerges in Kassia, designed by Karim Rashid. Here, the three-dimensionality of the boiserie – achieved through contrasting materials and finishes – acts as a spatial hinge between the operational zone and the living area. The equipped surfaces accommodate shelves and support planes, creating a rhythmic sequence that balances solids and voids. It is a solution conceived for interconnected interiors, where the kitchen functions as a dual-reading furnishing structure: both technical and decorative.

Kook, also designed by Karim Rashid, represents the most

radical and scenographic presence in this narrative. The inclined-geometry back panel introduces a dynamic dimension. The fully integrated system employs calibrated thicknesses, flush doors, and embedded linear lighting. The interplay of color and surface enhances the perception of technical precision, transforming the wall into a functional element that also contributes to visual clarity.

For Rastelli, boiserie and equipped back panels are true constructive modules of the kitchen environment.

In a context where the kitchen opens to the living space, they become an interface between technology and composition, between functional order and aesthetic freedom. KN

Most Retailers Say Gen AI Has Positive Effect Preventing Loss While Enhancing Shopping Zebra Technologies Corporation, a global leader in digitizing and automating workflows to deliver intelligent operations, unveiled the findings of its 18th Annual Global Shopper Study. The research shows Gen AI and automation solutions emerging as critical tools, with 87 percent of retail leaders citing their importance in loss prevention efforts.

“Retail’s future belongs to those who connect the physical and digital worlds through intelligent workflows,” said Matthew Guiste, Global Retail Technology Strategist, Zebra Technologies. “With AI, automation, and improved workflows, retailers can reduce loss and deliver the fast, seamless and personalized experiences that today’s shoppers demand.”

The data indicates shopper satisfaction levels have dipped for the second consecutive year, declining to 79 percent for in-store and 73 percent for online experiences compared to 81 percent and 79 percent respectively last year and 85 percent for both in 2023.

The research also highlights a shift in shopper priorities. While increasingly drawn to convenience, speed and value, nearly 8-in-10 shoppers prioritize discounts and promotions as inflation pressures persist. At the same time, consumers demand operational excellence, expressing frustration with out-of-stocks, locked-up products or a lack of self-checkout lanes.

Retailers increasingly recognize the important role of technology in enhancing the shopping experience as delays in accessing information hinder associates and disrupt service. According to the study, 88 percent of associates report challenges in obtaining timely assistance or information, up from 82 percent last year.

Providing the right technology alleviates stress and boosts job satisfaction. Eightyseven percent of surveyed associates believe effective tools make their work more enjoyable and less stressful while helping them provide better service to customers.

Plus, 90 percent believe the right technology helps them complete tasks faster.

Inventory challenges continue to impact shopper satisfaction and retailer profitability.

While improvement is evident year-overyear (52 percent in 2025 vs 57 percent in 2024), more than half of shoppers reported leaving stores without all the items they intended to purchase, often due to out-ofstocks or difficulties locating products.

Retailers acknowledge these gaps, with 84 percent of decision-makers citing real-time inventory synchronization as a top priority for their organizations. In fact, many of them plan to implement advanced technologies such as computer vision (57 percent), RFID (54 percent) and Gen AI (51 percent) over the next five years as they are viewed as essential tools for improving inventory visibility and reducing shrinkage.

Improving inventory management also has a positive impact on retailers’ bottom line. Based on a recent research study from Zebra in collaboration with Oxford Economics titled “Impact of Intelligent Operations,” retailers achieved up to 1.8percentage-point increases in revenue growth and profitability through improvements in their prioritized workflow of inventory management.

According to the Global Shopper Study, retail decision-makers recognize the importance of making these improvements to drive online and in-store sales. Optimizing

inventory processes jumped nine percentage points (38 percent in 2025 vs 29 percent in 2024) as the leading way retailers believe they can boost profits from online orders.

Inventory optimization also ranked in the top three for in-store profitability drivers at 38 percent, topped by automation for more real-time inventory visibility (39 percent) and in-store digital ads and retail media networks which rose to 43 percent from 37 percent last year. Zebra recently acquired Elo, which provides solutions that retailers use to build their own retail media networks and enhance the customer experience.

North America has the second highest percentage of retail associates (80 percent) who agreed that maintaining real-time visibility of out-of-stock products is a significant challenge. The highest region is Latin America at 88 percent.
