FAITH FORMATION

NORTH COAST NAVIGATOR

FEBRUARY 2024

MONTHLY REFLECTION This year the first half of February falls during the liturgical season known as Tempus per Annum or Ordinary Time (formerly Time After Epiphany), which is represented by the liturgical color green. Green is a symbol of hope, as it is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. The liturgical color green is worn during prayer of Offices and Masses of Ordinary Time. The remaining days of February are the beginning of Lent. The liturgical color changes to violet or purple — a symbol of penance, mortification and the sorrow of a contrite heart.

The month of February is dedicated to the Holy Family.

Highlights of the Month The month of February is traditionally dedicated to the Holy Family. Between the events which marked Christmas and the beginning of Christ's public life the Church has seen fit to recall the example of the Holy Family for the emulation of the Christian family. The Feast of the Presentation (February 2) or Candlemas forms a fitting transition from Christmas to Easter. The small Christ-Child is still in His Mother's arms, but already she is offering Him in sacrifice. February 21, Shrove Tuesday, will find us preparing for Ash Wednesday. The middle of the month will find us on Ash Wednesday accepting the ashes that remind us of our mortality and our need for penance.

The Holy Father's Intentions for the Month of February 2024 For the New Martyrs: We pray that those who risk their lives for the Gospel in various parts of the world inflame the Church with their courage and missionary enthusiasm.

From Feast to Fast Though the shortest month of the year, February is rich in Liturgical activity. It contains a feast (Presentation of our Lord) that bridges two other seasons (Christmas and Easter)! The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd harkens back to the Christmas mystery of Light except that now, Christ, the helpless babe, is “the Light of Revelation to the Gentiles who will save his people from their sins.” Candles, symbolizing Christ our Light, will be carried in procession this day, as will be the Paschal candle during the Easter Vigil Liturgy. In addition, the faithful may receive in February three of the four major public sacramentals that the Church confers during the liturgical year: blessed candles and the blessing of throats and blessed ashes. "The Light of Revelation" shines more brightly with each successive Sunday of Ordinary Time, until its magnificence–exposing our sinfulness and need for conversion–propels us into the penitential Season of Lent. We prepare to accept the cross of blessed ashes on Ash Wednesday (February 22) and plunge ourselves into anticipating the major exercises of Lent–fasting, prayer, almsgiving–laying our thoughts and prayers on the heart of our Mother Mary. She, who offered her Son in the temple and on the Cross, will teach us how to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow after her Son.

Jesus, who hast made Thyself obedient to Thy parents, to Thee be ever glory, with the supreme Father and with the Spirit. This item 12538 digitally provided courtesy of CatholicCulture.org

OHIO STATE COUNCIL

NORTH COAST NAVIGATOR

FEBRUARY 2024

STATE OFFICER REPORT January was certainly a very busy month for the Knights of Columbus here in the Cleveland Diocese. First, let us take a look at growth. January was a very good month for us as we brought in 28-New Members— our best month this fraternal year! Congratulations. There were 10 Exemplifications of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity done live and inperson. You can read further on that we are still in second place to Columbus but did make up ground in January. Steubenville is now in third and they are trying to catch us. Keep up the good work and let us catch Columbus! Second, Cleveland Councils continue to show that they can put their faith into action. 63 of our 65 active councils have scored points in the State General Program. That is 97% and fantastic. Several councils have already maxed the program and should be ready to complete their Columbian Award Application. Continue to report. We want to keep those state program directors busy.

Please make sure you submit your report to Supreme via Form 10784 and not the old FT-1. The Greater Cleveland Chapter of the Knights of Columbus held their annual Clergy Appreciation Dinner at the Center for Pastoral Leadership. There were 242 in attendance to announce the Clergy of the Year, Rev. Joseph Spolny, Parochial Vicar at Holy Family Parish in Parma. Congratulations! Councils interested in working with the Chapter can reach out John McQuillen at St. Charles Borromeo Council 16137 or myself. We would be glad to have you. Ohio District 1 Master, Brandon Robinson, had a planning meeting for the upcoming Spring 4th Degree Exemplification which is April 19-21, 2024, at DoubleTree in Westlake. If you are interested in more info on the 4th Degree, visit www.kofohdist1.org.

GROWTH

NORTH COAST NAVIGATOR

FEBRUARY 2024

GROWTH REPORT Brothers, We are past 50% of our goal of 1,860 new Brother Knights in Ohio. You all did a fantastic job recruiting during the month of January and we need to keep that momentum as we enter February. February 14 with the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. This is a perfect time to ask the men around us to become Knights. Our world needs more men to step “Into the Breach” and be leaders and to help all those in need. Our Parishes need more men to help and take part in role of the Church. Brothers it is now more important than ever that we bring men into the Knights of Columbus, to help fille those roles. I know that our Pastors and Priests would love to have more men step up and be apart of the Church and take a more active role in the Parish. We need to ask the men we know who are not Knights to sign up and help us whenever they can. During Lent with fish fries, or Parish soup and salad dinners, this would be a wonderful time ask men to join. Does your council sponsor a retreat or attends Catholic Men’s Conference as a group, another suitable place to ask men to join the Knights of Columbus. For us to be successful we all must recruit new members with every opportunity. With every personal contact, at every council and parish activity. The fastest way to sign up a new member is using the E-Membership (www.kofcohio.org ) website and click JOIN US or scan the QR code, men can join any time and become a member instantly. INSURANCE

NORTH COAST NAVIGATOR

FEBRUARY 2024

INSURANCE Happy Valentine’s Day! I’ve been reading about different kinds of parties to throw to celebrate Valentine’s Day. One site online listed 35 different suggestions, from a Fondue Night to a party centered on serving a heart shaped pizza. I guess Valentine’s Day is another wellestablished holiday to celebrate and I’m also guessing that the greeting card industry is happy. (The candy companies and florists are right there with the greeting card industry.) From individual cards that adults send each other to the packs designed for school kids to give to classmates, the stores are stocked with a myriad of selections. The celebration of love is always popular After all, isn’t love what every holiday celebration is about? Whether it’s a birthday, wedding anniversary, or holiday, it’s all about love! Valentine’s Day, though, sees love get a spotlight. We celebrate our love for another. Insurance is all about love. Most people buy insurance because they love someone. A husband buys life insurance because he loves his wife and children. If he’s not there to provide for them he wants to make sure they can stay in the same home, enjoy the same lifestyle, provide a college education for his children. With many two income families, wives buy life insurance for the same reasons. Long Term Care Insurance and Disability Income Insurance help protect the family from the vagaries of life: Needing care in the home or in a long-term care facility or being hurt or sick and unable to work affects the family. These products help protect the family one loves. Even our retirement annuity products help the ones we love. With forward thinking and fiscal discipline, a retirement annuity helps spouses spend their retirement years knowing they can have a guaranteed lifetime income. Less worries for the ones we love. All the products we have available are centered around protection; protecting the ones we love. Is your protection where you want it to be for your loved ones? Let’s meet and discuss what you want. Vivat Jesus!

The iconic baldacchino created for St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome by Gian Lorenzo Bernini will be restored thanks to the Knights of Columbus. The Knights announced that the fraternal organization would undertake the first major restoration of the nearly 400-year-old bronze, marble and gilded wood structure, which rises more than nine stories above the high altar of the basilica and the tomb of St. Peter. The restoration of the baldacchino will begin soon and should be completed by the Jubilee Year 2025. There were 5,877 abortions in Cuyahoga County in 2022. With Issue 1 passing, the Ultrasound Initiative is more important now than ever before. This initiative is funded by Knights of Columbus state and local councils with matching grants from the Supreme Council’s Culture of Life Fund. OVERVIEW The Knights of Columbus works together as an organization to purchase ultrasound machines for qualifying pregnancy centers. Discounted prices for select machines are offered through preferred pricing agreements arranged by the Supreme Council. The list of preferred machines is provided to sponsoring councils after the pregnancy center is approved for funding by the local diocese and the Supreme Council. After the state and/or local council raises 50% of the cost, the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council will provide the other 50% to complete funding for purchase of an ultrasound. Or, if the council raises 100% of the cost of a vehicle outfitted to serve as a mobile medical unit for a pregnancy center, the Supreme Council will provide 100% of the funds for an ultrasound machine to be used in that vehicle.
