FAITH INTO ACTION Keeping the Faith
Father McGivney not only lived a life devoted to the Catholic faith; he also focused all his spiritual, mental and physical energies on helping others persevere and grow in that faith, and he guarded against whatever might diminish the practice of Catholicism.

MONTHLY REFLECTION The first eight days of January fall during the liturgical season known as Christmas which is represented by the liturgical color white — the color of light, a symbol of joy, purity and innocence (absolute or restored). The remaining days of January are the beginning of liturgical season known as Tempus per Annum or Ordinary Time (formerly Time After Epiphany), which is represented by the liturgical color green. Green is a symbol of hope, as it is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. The liturgical color green is worn during prayer of Offices and Masses of Ordinary Time. Highlights of the Month In the first part of January we continue to rejoice and celebrate Christ's coming at Bethlehem and in our hearts. We have the wonderful feasts of Mary, Mother of God, where we honor Mary's highest title, and then we follow the Magi to the crib as they bring their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh on Epiphany. Finally we reach the culmination of this season with the Baptism of Our Lord by St. John the Baptist. With a touch of sadness we take down our decorations and enter into the liturgical period known as Ordinary Time where we will devote ourselves to the mystery of Christ in its entirety. This is a time of growth and an opportunity to allow the dignity of Sunday to shine forth prolonging the joy of Easter and Pentecost.
The month of January is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus, which is celebrated on January 3.
The Holy Father's Intentions for the Month of January 2024 For the Gift of Diversity in the Church: We pray that the Holy Spirit may help us to recognize the gift of different charisms within the Christian community and to discover the richness of different traditions and rituals in the Catholic Church.
The Winter Seasons The opening days of January may be cold and nature bleak, but the domestic church still glows warm with the peace and joy of Christmas. We dedicate the New Year to Mary on the January 1st Solemnity honoring her as Mother of God; and on January 8, the Solemnity of Epiphany, we rejoice with her, as her Son is adored by the three Wise Men. Herald John, who ushered in the Advent season, is present once again to close Christmastide on the feast of the Baptism of Our Lord (The First Luminous Mystery), and to open the Season of Ordinary Time. He points to Jesus, the Lamb of God who unites time and eternity in the Eucharistic Sacrifice, and even January’s diminishing darkness seems to echo St. John’s prayer: “He must increase and I must decrease.” In this liturgical season the Church eagerly follows Our Lord as he gathers his apostles and announces his mission. At Cana’s wedding feast (The Second Luminous Mystery) he performs his first public miracle at the request of his Mother, and his disciples saw his glory and believed in him. We, his present-day disciples pray for a like faith as we contemplate the eternal wedding feast of the Lamb and the unique role of the Blessed Mother in the plan of salvation. Blessed be His Holy Name Focus of the Liturgy The Gospels for the Sundays in January during the Christmas season follow the annual readings from St. Matthew, St. Luke, and St. John. The remaining Sunday Gospels in Ordinary Time are taken from St. Mark following the Lectionary for Cycle B, and the Weekday readings follow Year II.

STATE OFFICER REPORT When you read this, 2023 will be in the rearview mirror and we are staring into 2024. What a year 2023 was for our councils here in the Cleveland Diocese. We continue to grow, initiated COR, lead the state in live, in-person Exemplifications, have outstanding programs, and have a number of Star Councils. I cannot say enough how proud I am to be able to say that we are the best diocese in the state of Ohio. Granted, we might not be leading in growth—way to go Cbus—but we are the model of consistency. And it looks like 2024 will continue to be that way for us.
I was surprised that no council took advantage of me and the $20 I would have given you to contribute. I will again offer that next year. Football Crazr is winding down with just one more week left in the NFL season. Although Cleveland sold a lot of tickets, there just was not that many overall winners. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati is running away this year. Thank God the Browns are in the playoffs and the Bengals will be watching from home this year. LOL
The convention this year is in Cincinnati, well close to it in Covington. This is the 125th Anniversary of the Knights of Columbus Ohio State Council and we are planning some exciting gifts and events to make this convention special. Stay tuned for more information.

DISTRICT DEPUTY NOTES Once again great job on Program Reporting. All active Councils have reported at least one state program. The Cleveland Diocese once again lead in number of reported Exemplifications and number of total New, advancing, e-members and Clergy witnessing at the CUF. As I said previously, encourage your Councils to host at least one degree within your district per month; "Build it and they will come". I would like us to focus on the non-recruiting councils. Currently we have twenty seven (27) Councils which have not recruited one member. Let's work to ensure those Councils recruit at least one member before June 30th.

FAITH IN ACTION PROGRAM As I sit and write this, we are five days into the Christmas Season. I truly hope everyone had a blessed Christmas. Happy New Year!!! May 2024 bring you and your families health happiness and an abundance of Blessing from Our Lord Jesus. We need to continue to reach out to those in need, and to Our Pastors to help them and the community. Program wise Helping Hands and Holy Hours, Leading the Rosary, and countless other programs that all councils do. As promised. In the December Newsletter we have made the changes for easier reporting. Instead of just one council choice in each of the four FIA programs there are now three council choices. Councils still must do 2 FIA programs. The points remain the same for reporting programs 125. Youth Compliancy has also been updated and as of December 22, 2023, all councils that have any or all four of their member compliant are reflected in your points total for your council. For Youth Protection we get this report from Supreme. The Youth Compliancy will be updated every month. May your Christmas Season be filled with God’s Blessing upon You and Your Families.
