Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI 1927-2022

On April 18, 2005, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected the 264th successor of Saint Peter and chose the name Benedict XVI. His papacy testifies to both a scholarly churchman, having extensively studied theology and philosophy, and pastoral sensitivity. When elected pope at age 78, he didn't anticipate traveling the globe given his age and health, but quickly realized that the best way to reach the people of God was to go to them. He attended the first World Youth Day in Germany just months after his election. On February 28, 2013, Pope Benedict announced his resignation, becoming the first pope in almost 600 years to resign from the papacy. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI passed away on December 31, 2022 at the age of 95.

KEEPING THE FAITH Father McGivney not only lived a life devoted to the Catholic faith; he also focused all his spiritual, mental and physical energies on helping others persevere and grow in that faith, and he guarded against whatever might diminish the practice of Catholicism.

Wade, but also to send a clear pro-life message to lawmakers and resist efforts to codify legal abortion in federal law. CARRYING THE TORCH FOR OUR LADY This fall, Knights in New Jersey joined the Hispanic community in the Diocese of Trenton to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe with a ceremony at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption. Special Guadalupe torches were lit and then brought to many parishes throughout the diocese as a symbol of prayer for departed loved ones and to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe throughout the month of November.

In January we continue to rejoice and celebrate Christ's coming at Bethlehem and in our hearts. We have the wonderful feasts of Mary, Mother of God, where we honor Mary's highest title, and then we follow the Magi to the crib as they bring their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh on Epiphany.

Finally we reach the culmination of this season with the Baptism of Our Lord by St. John the Baptist. With a touch of sadness we take down our decorations and enter into the liturgical period known as Ordinary Time where we will devote ourselves to the mystery of Christ in its entirety.

Super Cash Bonanza, Free Throw Championships, and the State Convention are next on our plates at the state level. You will see something about Super Cash here after the MidYear Meeting January 6-8. You should be doing your council Free Throw Contests now. Please make sure that your District Deputy is aware you are doing a free throw so he can host a district contest in February. The diocesan championship is Sunday, March 5, 2023 at St. Hilary’s. The times will be determined here shortly. The state championship is Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Bishop Ready High School in Columbus. Registration will open at 11AM with the contest starting at 12 Noon. More to follow after the diocesan championship.

The steps are outlined for you on the email message but are below for your reference. If there are any questions or concerns about eMembers and what steps you are to do, please contact either your District Deputy, George Metz, Mike Incorvati or Jim Maslach. We can assist you through the process. State Exemplifications are every Wednesday at 7PM via Zoom. Supreme has the On-Demand feature.

COUNCIL PROCESS • Council Admission Committee contacts the e-member and welcomes him to the Order.

• Interview the eMember utilizing the Admission Committee Inquiries Guide (Form 390) • Complete Admission Committee Report (Form 283).

• Council Admission Committee recommendation to council officers.

IF FOUND FAVORABLE • Council ballots (live or virtually) to accept eMember.

• GK, FS or CMD sends online registration link to eMember.

• Registration Link for State Online Exemplification (https://www.kofcohio.org/ exemplification-registration/) or Supreme On-Demand Resources (Ceremonial Resources | Knights of Columbus (kofc.org) You will be required to login to Supreme before accessing the Ceremonial page.

• E-Member registers and attends Exemplification on assigned date and time.

• Upon completion of the Exemplification, a confirmation email is sent to the GK, FS and/or CMD from State or Supreme Council.

• Complete the Form 100 received from State Online Membership Director and submit to form100@kofcohio.org OR login to Officers Online and complete the Prospect tab.

• Present new member with rosary and emblem of the Order pin at next available opportunity.

IF FOUND UNFAVORABLE • Financial Secretary or Grand Knight login to Officers Online • Go to the Prospect tab.

• Select REJECTION and select the reason why.

• Send email to State Online Membership Director, District Deputy and State Officer. If the reason is incompatible or if the e-member would like a different council, State Online Membership Director will update and forward back to DMD to start the process over again with the new council.

INSURANCE Happy New Year to all my brothers and their families! I wish you peace, joy and good health this coming year! It’s that time of year when we make resolutions. Have you made any yet? Maybe the realistic question is, “Have you already broken some of them?” Here are 10 popular New Year’s resolutions from the internet along with some of my own: 1. Get in shape; for some of us this means to lose some weight, exercise more and staying fit; to stop smoking or eat healthier foods. 2. Stop procrastinating; I don’t know about you, but I’m going to put this off for yet another year! 3. Improve my prayer life; there’s an app for that! The Laudate app claims it is the most downloaded Catholic app. It has an immense library of prayers, devotions, daily readings, podcasts and Vatican documents. 4. Improve on a skill or develop a new hobby; maybe you want to lower your golf handicap or learn to bowl. Go for it! 5. Be more thankful; God has blessed me in so many ways and sometimes I forget to thank Him for all of those things…usually because I’m too busy asking for something else. 6. Spend more time with the people that matter most; sometimes I get so busy working, keeping the house up or going to some meeting, I forget the ones I do these things for. I’ve got to set aside more time to just be with them. 7. Reduce stress; in this sometimes hectic and seemingly crazy world, it’s easy to get swallowed up in the latest tragedy and worry all the time.

Cutting out those sources of stress or learning how to deal with them more effectively means a more settled life. 8. Read more; with so much on the internet, TV and radio it’s easy for me to get lost in those. Reading for pleasure has become something of a lost art. 9.

Spend wisely; it’s so easy to spend money on things we really don’t need, buy on a whim or because we’re keeping up with the Joneses.

10. Review your current financial situation; it’s always a good idea to take stock on a yearly basis. Now this last resolution I can definitely help you keep. My resolution is to contact each of you this year to check in and if appropriate, set up a time to meet. We can update your information and see where you stand. Your financial health is critical to your family’s future security. We’ll take a look at your goals and aspirations and help make sure you’re on track to reach them. Vivat Jesus!

STATE PROGRAMS Matching Funds Campaign 2022 Final Report

programs throughout Ohio which provide Catholic religious educational services and materials to the parishes and schools in each Ohio diocese. We have again demonstrated our continuing support of Catholic religious education, and your efforts prove that the Knights in Ohio truly put our Faith into Action.

I wish to thank all the Councils, Chapters, and Assemblies throughout our jurisdiction who made the 2022 Matching Funds Campaign a success. I also thank the Ohio Charity Foundation again for their generous match of $25,000. At the December State Officers Meeting, the State Officers unanimously decided to donate an additional $6,500 to be matched this year. With that, a total of $75,589 was raised to support the many diocesan departments and

EUCHARISTIC REVIVAL On June 19, 2022, the Catholic Church in the United States launched a very exciting National Eucharistic Revival. The Diocese of Cleveland is joyfully participating in this three-year process. Diocesan Convocations, retreats and webinars are taking place for bishops, priests, diocesan, parish and school staff as they open their hearts to the Holy Spirit’s action during the first Year of Diocesan Revival. Beginning on Thanksgiving Day the Diocesan Eucharistic Revival team will be posting video testimonies from our priests answering the question, “What does the Eucharist mean to me?” A new video will be posted daily through Christmas. Use the hashtag #EucharistCLE to find or share videos on social media. The Diocese will be also featuring a billboard campaign highlighting quotes from the Bible and the saints about the Eucharist in all eight counties of the Diocese.

Beginning in June of 2023 is the Year of the Parish Revival. Parishes and schools across the country and Northeast Ohio have already begun some exceptional grassroots initiatives to foster a deeper Eucharistic devotion in their parishes. The Knights of Columbus are a national partner for the Revival and we encourage every Council and Assembly to support initiatives in your parishes and within your council.

Here are a few things that you can do: Visit the National Eucharistic Revival website https://www.eucharisticrevival.org/ Visit the Diocese of Cleveland’s Revival Website: https://www.dioceseofcleveland.org/eucharistic-revival/overview Talk to your pastor to see what ways the Knights can assist, sponsor and support parish initiatives that could include adult faith formation, holy hours, and faith sharing on the Eucharist for all parishioners. Could your council offer to pray for and with all those preparing to receive First Holy Communion this year?

Participate in the Holy Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and possibly a parish Eucharistic Procession Learn more about the Eucharist. Answer the question, “What does the Eucharist mean to me?” and share your in your family, at work, at a Council meeting or with friends.

In 2024, there will be National Eucharistic Revival held in Indianapolis with over 80,000 Catholics. The Diocese of Cleveland hopes to have a good representation. Stay tuned for more exciting opportunities in the diocese and our parishes.

Many councils and District Deputies have been struggling with where and how to fill out the forms on the Supreme website. Where do we find them? How do we fill them out? Who can fill out the online forms? Who has access? Lots of questions to go through and we will get the answers together.

AFFILIATE MEMBER INITIATIVE RETURNS! Many of you have probably never heard of the Affiliate Member Initiative. It’s an opportunity to transfer those members from your roster that no longer wish to be engaged at the local level. Councils have the opportunity to remove members from their rosters who have been missing-in-ac on for some me. This is not a suspension or a withdrawal. The men you transfer to the affiliate program are still Knights of Columbus, they are just not members of your council anymore. These transfers will not affect your progress towards reaching your Supreme Growth quota. The men you transfer to the program will now be “managed” by Supreme and State Councils. You will no longer pay per capita for them— once they are transferred (January only).

Resources are available for you on the state website under PUBS&RESOURCES. There is a PowerPoint slide deck in PDF format that was used for the training sessions on December 19 and 29. Under Supreme Manuals, the Guidebook (11231) and FAQs are there for you to review. Please download these resources to help you through the process.
